ohhhhhhh my fucking gooooooodddddddddddddd this episode was so fucking insane

i love how it's littered with implications of morty's perceived relationship with rick. for example when they first get out of the hole and morty is crying and rick immediately goes to snap a picture. like it speaks volumes that morty imagines this to be rick's initial reaction, vs the ending where rick genuinely does check up on him.

i'm also a huge fan of that initial argument they have in the garage, where rick calls morty out on being afraid of getting replaced, and morty flat out denies it or tries to refute it, but when rick and diane actually leave for their date morty straight up admits it. "you nailed it! my worst nightmare! i'd like to leave the hole now?" he knew that his fear, at least one of them, was him getting shoved aside, but he's definitely picked up some of that emotional repression from rick!!!!!!

im also fascinated by the conversation morty has with the hole guy, because i feel like it implies that morty is also deeply afraid of being dumb, naive, and that rick's nihilistic outlook on life is the correct way to perceive the world. there's also a moment in their conversation where the hole guy reveals that he just wants to suck up all of rick's fear, and morty says "can't the hole just let me go then? sounds like i dont matter," to which the hole guy immediately says "you don't!" showing that morty is also deeply afraid of being nothing more than some kind of tool, a means to the end that is rick.

another moment that killed me dead a little bit was when morty says that he's afraid of being responsible for rick's sadness, which is so grotesquely sad to me, because holy shit, rick's abuse runs so deep that morty is Hole-Level Scared of being in any way responsible for rick's sadness.

the last three minutes are obviously the peak of this episode and kind of this season, because it is just sooo miserable how morty's most crippling fear is proven right. even if only vaguely, there's still that underlying "he did not and would not do this for me" idea that is now confirmed for morty, and i am just. So excited to see how this character arc is continues

ok wait yeah i need to talk about the short. let me compile all my thoughts and theories hold on

-the candy club is absolutely a lure for kids. cult needs kids, kids like candy. theres a few things in the town that lure kids in. vans and stores that give out candy, clowns, etc. based on the fact that the candy dealer is associated with the cartel (who trade actual sugar i guess) kevin was probably just hired to be an easy pawn and a scapegoat. thats what pelo meant when he drew kevin being puppeteered by cd (gonna ignore the fact that cd has a poster that says his candy is better than the candy clubs. thats for later) but i dont think hed hire just Anyone since cd also works for the cult, and this leads to my next observation

-kevins mom is seen with a diamond on her shirt, and her hair sticking out to the sides in points just like skiddads hairstyle. kevin clearly doesnt know about any cult, at least not yet. do his parents know? are they forced into it? do they understand who theyre associated with? plus we all know a photo with a heart drawn under it is a bad sign for the fates of the people in the pic. coughs Hope and her mother coughs

-roy is doomed. he is dooooomed he is so fucking doomed. it hurts to say it but his friends have a right to give up on him and leave him. roy has been nonstop bullying and teasing skid and pump because of his own insecurities and theres been no change from him whatsoever. i sympathize with him, i know what its like to be too stubborn to change because its such a vulnerable, powerless feeling, but if my prediction is right, roys just gonna drive them away and become vulnerable to the tree entity instead. theyll all be. if hes lucky, he and his friends will live to meet again so he can make it up to them and skid & pump after a lot of self reflection and a good amount of humbling from the adults around him. or trees around him

-lila is So broken and i feel so bad for her. no nice clothes, unbrushed hair, worlds most miserable expression. you just know skid had to force her out of bed to make breakfast for them. i have a lot of thoughts about lilas grief, its really telling that years later shes struggling so hard to raise skid, whos Exactly like his father. skid himself probably struggled to cope, i think hes the one who scribbled out skiddads face in the photos. lila trims skids hair a lot, he knows she doesnt like any reminders of him but he believes the mask is enough and doesnt think of any reason why she trims it other than she just says its getting too long for the mask. also jaune is doing kind of a shit job caring for lila? dont take her out to drink wtf. i swear shes part of the cult

-skid and pumps hair is revealed which means i get to post this observation i made. notice how susie not only has the pointed sides, but her widows peak resembles the lower half of a diamond

-skiddad is back ugh. also that last image with kevin is horrifying. it reminds me of this. i still wonder what the dots mean. maybe theyre locations? or people? theres 22 dots if that helps

I saw someone else on here saying how Rick needs someone with a different moral compass to go with him on adventures because otherwise it'd be an echo chamber of bad decisions, and thats why he brings Morty (very outspoken against him) rather than Summer (very often outspoken against him, however very much aligns with his violent impulses)

and I agreed with that, however I wanted to add my own theory as to why he brings only Morty, which kind of goes along with theirs.

I lost their post/url so I dont know who it is who posted that, but if I find it ill reblog with a link to their post, or if one of you find it youre welcome to do that for me !!

okay, so. it seems to me that another reason Rick would take Morty most times and not usually Summer is not only because Summer is more likely to become a moral echo chamber, but because Morty is the most likely in the family to not end up another Rick.

let me explain what I mean:

Rick has witnessed the citadel and how that ended up, he's implied to have witnessed the deaths of so many people (not just Ricks) for being too confident in their smarts. he knows that his life style kind of ruins you if youre as smart as he is because you start getting to know that you are.

this won't happen with Morty.

Morty is a lot of things; resourceful, highly adaptive, good in combat (when he can be), quick on his feet and passionate. but one thing he isnt, is like Rick.

Morty gets none of his traits from Beth or Rick. he isnt inhumanely smart (in fact its canon that he's quite the opposite), he isnt predisposed to being cold and uncaring, he isnt as impulsive (he still is, just not as much), the list goes on.

not only are Summer and Beth predisposed to end up like Rick, they have, on many occasions, acted exactly how Rick would've acted in situations. and to me, it seems like that scares him.

Morty however is very different to Rick, and Rick knows that very few Mortys ever end up even a fraction of the man he is.

Mortys are not predisposed to end up cold and uncaring, in fact Mortys are predisposed to be the exact opposite. Mortys are "hardwired for forgiveness." theyre empathetic, loving, forgiving. Mortys rarely harden into the kind of person Rick is, or the kind of person Summer and Beth would be.

Morty is the obvious answer to who Rick should rely on - he'll never be bad. Morty is good at his core. at least most of them are, of course just like there's outlier Ricks (c-137 himself), there's outlier Mortys, but as a general statement, Mortys are good at their core.

let me explain.

he is, by admission, a different kind of Rick. he wanted to stay home, to be there for the girls, he was even willing to give up his dream of science just to be there for him.

when they died, so did a part of him.

he lost the love of his life, and he lost his daughter. he lost his perfect little family.

and what did he do ? go insane trying to find the person who did this to him, and get rid of them.

the things he did on the way were kind of a "in the grand scheme of things" type of situation.

again another blog already said this (here) (hopefully that worked), but when Prime said he c-137 could've been him- he already was. he was in the exact same situation that Prime was. he offered someone infinity, and they rejected it. but instead of going the way Prime did, which was killing the people around Bird Person to force him to travel infinity anyways, he just moved on. he got upset at first and tossed some weak insults, but he moved on. because, as the above post says, its not that big of a deal. it wasn't the end of the world for him.

now, im not saying c-137 has never done anything wrong. hes done a lot of things wrong. what I am saying is he's good at his core; his goal was never and still isn't just to hurt people. his goal is revenge and in his eyes, its a ticking time bomb. anyone in his way has to be swiftly dealt with because he's running out of time.

also - of course he can't show how much he loves Morty. he doesnt know if Prime is still watching him, but he does know that the Omega Device could very well still be on operation, and he finds out he was correct in this assumption in Ultmortricken.

if he had shown his love for Morty often at all, who knows what Prime would've done with that information.

my favorite riordan characters (just my opinion, don’t come at me)

Magnus Chase

I read MCGoA first (dont judge), so I have sentimental value over this series. I think magnus is literally so hilarious in a tired and confused way. It’s also so funny how Percy was so lost still like after 5 books but Magnus knows so much about the mythology already. Even after reading pjo i thought Magnus was way funnier and better main character than Percy. I think that was because Magnus is 16 in his series and Percy is just 12 in the lightning thief and I was already like 14-15 and liked more mature characters (Magnus is still a child and a dumbass). Magnus is also a very sad character if you think about it. He is basically an orphan bc his father wasn’t there and he witnessed his mothers death. Then he lived in the streets and was probably hungry, cold and scared almost every day. And then BOOM. Suddenly weird shit happens and he dies a gruesome death. Like seriously, a ball of melted asphalt burns through his body… He also never really had time to cope with the being dead thing bc suddenly he's supposed to save the world. Like wtf. Also I get the biggest gender envy ever (don’t ask why, he’s kinda pathetic xd). Best thing is that he’s fruity like I am. Magnus is also the healer so it is really interesting to get the healer's pov, a guy who isn’t your usual hero. Magnus also defeated LOKI, A GOD, with the power of friendship, which is hilarious. Magnus starts the show as a cynical boy who has lost everyone but by the end he has found a new family and moved on and I think that’s beautiful.

2. Will Solace

The absolute sass master. Of course Percy is still the sassiest ever but oh boy does Will come the next second. Will seriously takes no shit. I haven’t read his and Nico’s book yet but just from BoO and tHO I can say he has some balls. Like, one of the first things he does is calling Octavian, one of the biggest bad guys, an anemic loser. WHILE standing nose to nose with him. Like even Nico thought that Octavian was kinda scary but Will just marches right up to him and starts throwing insults. And then he proceeds to stubbornly make Nico rest and heal. He is so stubborn and bossy and I love him for it. Will also has a sadder side. He always puts everyone else before him bc he is the healer so it’s his job. He also was forced to be a leader way too young after he lost his older siblings. Still, he manages to walk around with a smile on his face. Will is so strong and his past is way overlooked. All the fans focus on Nico’s traumas and how Will helped him but never the other way around. Give Will some love, people.

3.Apollon (Lester Papadopoulos)

The most dramatic god ever, like omg. Apollo/Apollon has always been my favorite Greek god and Rick's version is just perfect. He is so annoyingly self centered and arrogant but at the same time he is so sad and vulnerable. I have never cried bc of Riordan's books but the hidden oracle made me sod like a baby. All the regret and pain in the stories about his lovers was heartbreaking. How his heart is stone bc he doesn’t believe in love anymore and how he takes responsibility for all the death he has caused. He is still an asshole but at least he notices it. I relate to him on such a deep level. He masks all his pain with humor and overconfidence just like I do. I haven't finished the trials of the Apollon yet but I can’t wait to read more of him and learn even more sad, funny and interesting things about him as a character.

4.Percy

Of course I have to include our best boy. During the HoO I just kept waiting for Percy’s POV just bc his thought process is the most entertaining in my opinion. He is so unhinged most of the time. Like, everyone is scared of Nico, no, you guys should be absolutely terrified by Percy. Like bro is so close to losing it. Few more inconveniences and he will kill everyone. but at the same time he likes eating blue food and doesn’t know half of the myths the others do. He just does what he feels like doing. My favorite moment was when he and Annabeth were in Tartarus and Percy was about to kill Akhlys by drowning her in her own poison. Like bro is insane. It’s also so sad that he and Annabeth have been in the front lines of war since they were like 12. It’s always them. Like there had to be other heroes right? Or like why couldn’t some minor god handle the situations? I have always loved characters who insult the enemy while fighting and Percy is just like that. At first, I didn't think he was any special but as he grew older, I started to like him more. Probably bc I could relate to him better when he was closer to my age. He also got more serious as he got older. I’m kinda pissed that he gets again a new series even tho Riordan has other characters that have potential. (I MEAN MAGNUS! LIKE PLEASE RICK! PLEASE!)

Summary:Daryl and y/n discuss of one of the saviors. Things seem to be getting worse and worse and things don't end as expected.

Warnings: Use of y/n, bad words, violence, argument, fight, angst,etc etc.

It was all over at last.

The war with the saviors had ended, not in the best way, but the tranquility could be felt a little more.

Things weren't easy yet, of course not, there were many things to resolve, things that brought many endless debates that never came to anything, and one of them was between you and Daryl. It was one that, at first, you hadn't even discussed, but for some strange reason, Daryl had now changed his mind.

The relationship between you was, roughly speaking, quite perfect. You two fought, of course you did, like any normal couple, but most of the time both of you shared quiet and beautiful moments. But since Rick's death (or disappearance according to Daryl, another of the reasons why they argued) things had changed too much, such as what you were going to do with Dwight when it was all over.

Before the two had assured that they would not leave him alive. What he had done to you that time in the forest, after you helped him and his wife, was enough to make you hate him. You just couldn't forgive him. But now, when the time had finally come, when one afternoon you went to talk to him about how you would do it, you got a big surprise.

"I don't want to do it." He said seriously, without taking his eyes off the motorcycle that he had been fixing all day.

"What?" You asked in a daze, thinking that maybe you had misheard.

"It's just…I think we should forget about it. Try to keep things peaceful." His voice was calm and sure, as if he was trying to keep you from freaking out, which was impossible.

"It has to be a joke. You're fucking kidding me right?" He just looked at you while biting his lip. It wasn't a fucking joke. "Is it that you don't remember what he did to you? What he did to us? How he betrayed us and laughed at us? And how later he came asking for forgiveness, help, shelter and on top of that we gave it to him?!" You didn't want to draw attention, much less from Michonne who was already looking at them from the opposite sidewalk, but seeing the calm with which he said things was simply infuriating.

"Y/n, things have changed, okay? We all change is..." but you cut him off before he could finish speaking.

"No! You've changed! Don't you think it's enough that we have forgiven them all, that we let them live and eat our things, as well as having to spare their lives?!" At this point, Daryl had already gotten up from the floor and was beginning to approach you with the intention that you would calm down or at least that you could discuss this in private and not before the eyes of the curious, but at the moment when he gave a single step towards you, you back two.

"No. I got it. You dont want to kill him? Okay. You for your part and I for mine."

"No y/n. Things don't have to be like this...there are other ways, I had something else in mind." The seriousness on your face forced him to keep talking. "I was going to take him to the woods, leave him there and let him go on his own, look for luck elsewhere. But if I ever see him around here again..."

"What will you do? Kill him? Ha, please, Daryl, you don't even believe that. You've sworn it on your life, you've sworn it on me, and look at you! Being a good man..." you took a few steps forward, the enough to be almost glued to him, where only he can hear what you had to say. "Don't be surprised if one day you don't find him..." and with that, you just walked away.

Because you weren't going to forgive him that easily, not after betraying you like that in the woods, not after not helping you with Negan until it suited him, not after seeing all the things he'd done to you and not move a finger to help you, not after they'd gone out of their way for both of them and they'd just ignored you.

So it was that same afternoon, after dodging Michonne's questions and Daryl's pleas, that you put together your plan. You were going to do it in the same cell, that same night, you would torture him a little, enough to make him regret it even more and then you would just kill him, so you wouldn't risk someone hearing his screams.

You didn't want to think too much about what you would do to him, you would just let the moment flow. You didn't want to think too much. Not before you regret it.

But what you didn't know was that after you left, Michonne and Daryl knew that you were going to plan something, so they stayed in the cell themselves, waiting for you to come and stop you.

But what they didn't know was that you were determined to finish him off, whatever you had to do, which included having to finish off the guards.

The guards, who were none other than Daryl and Michonne.

Night had fallen, you had everything you thought you needed, you had made sure that no one had seen you leave, or so you thought, and you had run to the small prison they had built.

Upon entering you found that everything was dark when they always used to leave a lamp on, but the fury did not let you think calmly. Observe the place calmly but the thirst for revenge did not let you see them standing there by your side. You walked over to where Dwight was, but the voices in your head didn't let you hear the footsteps behind you.

You only realized something was wrong when you noticed that the cell was completely empty. It was there, when due to the slight reflection of the knife in your hand, the one with which you intended to attack whoever crossed your path, was that you noticed the two people behind you.

You turned quickly with the intention of sticking the knife into whoever was trying to stop your plan, but Daryl was much faster, he already knew your movements when attacking, and his hand nimbly took yours while with the other took the knife out of your hand, throwing it to the side. The other figure, Michonne, stepped up behind you wrapping her arms around yours to stop you from moving.

And when they saw that they were only making you angrier, they took off their hoods.

"Y/n that's enough...you don't have to do this." Your eyes filled with fury and not caring that it was them, you moved with all your strength to get rid of them, you kicked with the intention of hitting Daryl, but only managed to make his arms cling to yours as well.

"You're a treacherous bastard!" You screamed with all your might.

"Y/n you're acting like a spoiled child..." Michonne said, to which Daryl thought was the worst thing she could have said if she was trying to reassure you.

"I'm not a damn girl! Is it wrong that I want justice? Is it wrong that I don't think the same as you?! Why yours is valid and mine isn't?!" You screamed with all your might. You couldn't understand, you wanted to but you couldn't, the fury was stronger than the reason, because deep down, deep inside, you knew they were right, you knew that perhaps you were exaggerating. But you couldn't stop your impulses, your thoughts, those that didn't let you sleep at night. Because after all, they had done even worse things, what did it mean to kill just one of them?

"No, of course it's not bad. Damn, you think I like all this?" Daryl said a little more upset.

"Well, you seem to enjoy it!"

"Well I don't! No one tells you not to want revenge, but we need this. We need rules and we need everyone to follow them, we need peace of mind and we need everyone to cooperate...no exceptions. We can find other options okay?...you don't have to get into this trouble...please y/n." He replied while caressing your cheek.

"Okay. So...I have another option." You said serious and a little calmer, even though inside you were like hell.

"Tell us...we can work it out, we don't want this." Michonne answered hopefully.

"Either Dwight dies...or I'm out of here. You decide or I do, but you know exactly which one I'll choose."

"No. No way, forget it." Daryl growled, furious again.

"So will you let me go?" You asked in a playful voice.

"We already talked about it, our word will not change. There are no exceptions." Michonne replied. You looked at Daryl for a few seconds, waiting for him to change his mind, for him to see the seriousness in your words, but it didn't work, so you simply said;

"Okay...then I guess you'll have one less warrior."

And without saying anything else, without even thinking about the pain in your chest that was formed at the thought of having to abandon the love of your life, you let go of the weak grip of the two and left the place, you headed home...well, old home, you took your things and left.

Not before leaving Daryl a little letter.

"-Together against the world forever.- Do you remember? Well, it seems that you are a damn liar.

With love y/n, who will continue to fight the world for both of us."

Second: I'm not a fan of Dwight, in fact I don't like him too much, and I always wanted to say what I thought about him and what better way to do it than here!! Also, leaving my opinion about the situation, I think it's a bit difficult when you want something, when you want revenge and no one understands you, when you feel that the person you love the most betrayed you, and I also feel that it would be a difficult decision to choose. , but it's just my opinion, a story. RIGHT i've watched the first six episodes of enterprise (five if the two-part pilot only counts as one) and i have things to say. take all of them with a pinch of salt bc ive only just started it but i have a sneaking sense that it will continue in much the same fashion.

first of all the backswing from ds9 + voyager's first black captain and first female captain is TANGIBLE. to quote eleanour "girlboss" guthrie-blacksails so many goddamn (white) men here!!! too many goddamn (white) men here!!! not only are they white men, archer and trip specifically are Cowboys in the most "we clearly want to write a classic western" sense. if i closed my eyes and listened to a scene with just the two of them i wouldn't be able to distinguish it from firefly, a show where they purposefully put on cowboy voices because apparently space westerns were all the rage in 2001-2002.

t'pol is really the only woman i would call a main rather than supporting character and her role thus far seems to be emulating the nagging sitcom wife, in that she naysays everything, gets utterly disregarded, is proven right by the end of the episode, and then is immediately disregarded again next episode. i find the idea of vulcans intentionally curtailing human progress into space and humans rebelling against that really interesting, but i hate the way the casting and direction turns space travel into this gung-ho boys will be boys situation because even though t'pol is right, she's being Framed as a killjoy in such a gendered way.

back to the western thing - i watched a Lot of 50s' and 60s' westerns as a child and out of the five episodes of enterprise i've seen so far, three have used tropes or stock situations directly from westerns with the worst offender being s1e6 terra nova. i was fucking gobsmacked by that episode like it was BLATANT. the fact that most of their outdoor scenes are probably filmed in california which is where a lot of westerns are filmed by pure hollywood convenience probably doesn't help, but it's really evident in the writing as well. i remember reading that the original series wanted to take the western frontier into space and make a "wagon train to the stars" and it feels like enterprise decided to go all the way back to that concept and do it far, far less subtly.

of course the problem with this is that rather than engage with the politics of that genre and how they've influenced the formation of star trek (is the federation an imperialist entity? is starfleet a colonialist military? etc) it feels so far that enterprise is just having a great time playing uncritical cowboys and aliens, completely erasing indigenous people from the narrative of westward expansion or replacing them with the non-human which. fucking sucks!!

the fact that t'pol is constantly getting racially harassed and abused as the only vulcan aboard, the fact that hoshi is inexperienced with combat and space travel so its always the men doing the action scenes, the fact that travis is the youngest and least ranking officer on the bridge and the fact that enterprise was "rick berman's baby" are all adding up to a conscious agenda of putting white men at the forefront of trek again.

if i'm wrong about any of this i would love to hear from people who've watched further than me! i dont mind about spoilers i've already had loads

Valid point I keep finding BUT I recently read the PJO series again in preparation for TSATS and those books still slap!! They’re so good even tho I’m reading them as an adult even though they're meant for kids. (Also I recently read ToA because of course I’m gonna keep reading Rick’s middle school books until the day I die or they stop coming out lol. And that series while more goofy at points I still really liked) I also read one of Mark Oshiro's other books in prep for this book because I was excited for The Sun and Star to be released and I just COULD NOT get through it 😭 the writing was just giving me the ick and the characters where all kind of samie like that sassy talking wit. Which was a bummer because I liked the premise of the book “Anger is a Gift”, which was about underfunded schools mainly facing ppl of color and immigrants which leads to the school-to-prison pipeline because of the defunct way America funds public schools that keeps the poor poor and the rich getting richer & it was ACAB & had a lot of queer representation & etc. So I thought I’d really like it but I just couldn’t get through it because of the writing and I noticed this same writing style showing up in TSATS. Just because it’s for kids doesn’t excuse it from being bad. Like early Pixar and Studio Ghibli is still so good to watch back again and my 50+ yrs old parents like it. Book examples would be Harry Potter (screw JK Rowling tho fr) & the The Little Prince

Not to bash on ppl who say this is the main reason ppl don’t like the book but it feels like a straw man argument to say that the books not growing with us is the main reason ppl didnt like it. All tho I’m sure ppl have argued this but that is definitely their fault because Rick is staying in middle-grade fiction forever like that’s his thing! Why would ppl expect different 🤣 You think he wants to write a sex scene?! LMAO

(Here’s my review, it’s unhinged and not great because I should be doing productive stuff but am distracted until I can at least write down some of my thoughts on my disappointing experience)

Here are some things I didn’t like about it from a piece of art standpoint:

The pacing was bad

This book was filled with the first thing they teach you about writing which is: SHOW don’t TELL

It made me not ship Solangelo surprisingly like how??! I used to love Solangelo but I think this mainly is because of the collective consciousness of the fandom and because we wanted Nico to find happiness with someone. But if you really look back on their moments canonically from the books Will is a background character (who honestly kind of gaslights Nico by invalidating that ppl treated him differently as a son of Hades and that he didn't feel welcome at camp) and they kind of have a quick meet cute in the last book of The Last Olympian. They get together without us seeing their developing relationship and we now know they’re dating in The Trials of Apollo where we see them briefly in the first book and then more so in the last book. Honestly, this canonically alone doesn’t give me enough information or examples to really know or care about their relationship in comparison to Percy and Annabeth who we get to see develop. So TSATS just kind of felt hollow to me because I’m supposed to believe they’d die for each other but I DONT KNOW THE POWER OF THEIR LOVE?? This could just be a first love fling type thing like I was never shown the depth of their romance just told constantly in the book how much they love each other so it just felt kind of empty and emotionally unsatisfying to me.

Solangelo's relationship has always been in the background and the fans are what really made it cause we love Nico and want him to be happy. So when Will and Nico are fighting in this book all I can think is that this is just their relationship period.

So the reason it made me not like Solangelo was because Tarturus was supposed to bring out the worst in them and strain their relationship but, like, I haven’t really seen much of their relationship so I don’t have a “control group” to base this off of. So Will just seemed rude when he was so mean about Nico’s underworld home and about Nico's darkness which I also didn’t understand wtf he was talking about because Nico has killed just as many monsters as other campers and what else was his darknes based off of. cause he’s emo/goth?? Cause he can raise the dead?? Like guys we’ve discussed this just because a character wears black doesn't automatically make them the bad guy. I honestly thought Will just thought that was hot and they’d have that normie x alt relationship dynamic (that meme of: My hot witch wife. Me doing whatever she wants) I thought THAT was Solangelo not Will constantly trying to bring this light side to him and trying to change him. I agree that Nico needs help w his trauma and PTSD and things like that but this felt like if someone tried to “cure” a goth person, like actually screw you

I thought Will was supposed to look like a normie but be secretly a freak (in a good way lol) / goth interest. Cause this is meee I thought I was like Will as someone who looks like a normie and has a sunny disposition but I have a lot of alt/goth interests and I would let an alt girlie step all over me tbh lol. So does he like Nico for who he is or not?!

This is more in line w what I thought their relationship was like lol:

The flashbacks and forwards I thought were ok even if they took you out of the story a bit but this device is supposed to be used for an IMPORTANT event not just as a way to quickly give context to their relationship and when we got to the scene this was taking place in I was like that’s it?? He what? fell down and is suffering from sun withdrawals and this is the book's big moment to justify jarring flashback scenes?

Mark Oshiro is not a fantasy adventure or horror writer and it shows. Maybe it’s just me but their depiction of Tarturus and the nightmare and the journey were just not up to snuff with good horror and fantasy books I’ve read. (And if your gonna say something about how it’s for kids then I raise you the book series “Goosbumps”) So as a genre in itself, it was just disappointing. It was mainly a relationship guidebook book but I didn’t really like that or feel like it was done well, It felt lectury and also idk if that's the genre middle schoolers really like?? 😅

It had too many references which really dates a book, A lot of professional writers say not to use too much slang or modernreferences (unless you’re trying to make a book expressly about a time period) because it really dates a book and doesn’t make a story feel timeless for future generations if you use too many references (this doesn’t include political novels tho which are very much based in that time when the events happening) Anyways for future writers keep this in mind, you don't need to keep in touch with the youth through urban dictionary you can just write about the emotions of being young or whatever. If you’ve tried to read a comic book aimed at teens from the 50s like I have you’ll realise how funny that is.

(Also the carebear reference that I didn’t even understand and I watched carebear as a kid & Lil Nas video which if this was written for kids that music video feels a bit inappropriate for them 😂 it had a reference both too old and too young for middle schoolers AND how in the world would 1930s born, dropped out of elementary school, can’t use the internet or phones half blood, NICO DI ANGELO know these references???)

The writings giving:

Bad alt representation. (This is my most out-of-pocket opinionated bullet point rant so if you don't agree that’s a-okay :D ) This could be a whole post in itself but although I know ppl joke about Nico as the Emo kid I would really like to get into how Nico is actually, or it would be cool, as having some goth subculture inclinations. And ppl probably think of Trad Goths with the whole makeup and teased hair look but it’s mainly a music-based subculture and/or it just has a different idealogy around the ideas of death and what is deemed beautiful while most ppl see it as ugly. (Like listen to “Gallows Dance” or the Bauhaus's “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” & “The Passion of Lovers”, to name songs off the top of my head) This bullet point is definitely MY OPINION and doesn’t contribute exactly to the book being bad but aren’t those songs the vibe of an underworld kid like Nico?? Embracing the darkness and dancing in graveyard vibes fr!! Anyways most alt subcultures and especially emo are seen as a phase in life that you grow out of and then become normal. This book just really gives the energy of being written by a normie who would be confused by the choices of alt ppl and just doesn’t get it because it’s not their personal interest, which isn’t exactly bad even tho I want more philosophy from Nico on the chillness and acceptance of death (all tho greek mythologies view on the afterlife sucks fr and THAT is a whole other post haha) So this isn’t exactly a problem BUT what gives me the ick is WILL NOT ACCEPTING THESE THINGS LIKE SIR STOP BASHING YOUR BOYFRIENDS LIFE!! Will asking Persephonee, “How do you love someone from the underworld” SHUT UP!! 😤

Will was useless and I know what they were trying to go for but if I had a girlfriend (oh I’m a lesbian btw just in case ppl think I’m going harder on this book more than the other books because I’m homophobic bruh I swear I’m not I’m only disappointed in the art itself, NOT the representation which I actually liked) and if I was super good at fighting and they weren’t, I’m sorry but I wouldn’t take them BECAUSE of my love for them. If they were going to be useless on a mission of such life-threatening danger and importance I WOULD NOT TAKE THEM OUT OF KINDNESS. Like skills in medicine and art and music are great and there’s of course nothing wrong w not being a badass fighter (lmao this is me and most readers) but then DONT GO TO SUPER HELL!!! Especially if you have something that makes you more pathetic than being a normal human in Tarturus, his suffering from no sunlight is out of pocket and just makes the story draggg and makes him seem boring and the story more boring. I know they were trying to go for a fish out of water storyline and roll reversal but I think it wasn’t done well enough and overall hurt the story

Also, I’ve heard ppl talk about how it would have been nice to have a book focus on their relationship while at Camp Half-Blood. Like maybe it takes place pre Jason's death and we can just see them living at camp. It’d be chill and we can actually see them as a couple & It would give the energy of readers wanting to go to camp half-blood again like how everyone wanted to go to Hogwarts. Cause we haven’t seen the camp as a fun home since the very early PJO books ;-; (this is just a fun idea I like and I think would have been more manageable for an author but this is FR my opinion on a fun book idea i’d like to read) ALSO this would have been so nostalgic for the older readers who have been here since middle school gobbling up this universe 😌

I know ppl get mad at ppl making fun of Will for being pathetic in tarturous. As saying he’s a child and no one can be happy and sunny and doing well 24/7 which is valid but that’s not really my argument. I like watching characters put in situations where we watch them bend against what we thought they were when put in a hard situation (the masochist in me lol jkjjk). But this I think didn’t work for me because as I’ve said before he’s mainly a background character at the end of one book thrown together with Nico and we as a fandom have mainly made him up. Also, Tarturus was just not as scary or adventure-filled as like any of the other missions from previous PJO books, It didn’t feel as trauma-inducing as everyone in the series tried to explain it as. (again show not tell from the book) Also, I would have liked to have seen Will cool at least once or one reason for me to like him with Nico but I saw him as pretty bland as a character

The writing style felt bad to me because of the show don’t tell part for example telling as “it made him sad and traumatized” when showing would be, you know, actually showing the scenes and this book just felt like 80% telling what they were feeling instead of letting the reader feel the emotions of the scene for themselves

I think that’s another thing I really didn’t like related to the Show Don't Tell. And another hallmark of bad writing was this book was really telling the audience how to feel instead of allowing the story to be powerful enough to do that for itself. This book follows a trend I’ve seen a lot in TV shows where everything kind of feels like detached irony from being on Twitter where you hear everyone’s opinions so the story is written as a wink and a nod like we know what we’re doing and we know what your thinking and how twitter will react to it. Like it’s hard to describe this trend I’ve mainly seen in TV shows and movies recently which always gives me the ick cause it doesn’t feel funny it feels like I’m in a response piece that is breaking the fourth wall and reminds me that I’m in reality watching or reading something instead of actually feeling like I’m in the story. It’s like pseudo-wittiness or something. Tell me if you guys feel this way about some modern tv shows or books, I can't be alone please 😭!!

The stupid toast scene at the end lol The book is like: Do you get it? Did you get it?? They’re opposites! And they attract!! We did the trope you guys!! Also, the stupid Darth Vader scene to start off the book 💀

This whole book made me cringe where I had to constantly get up walk around and lie on the floor before I could continue, only to constantly repeat the cycle 😅

Anyway, idk how to end this review/rant I just had such strong emotions I had to get out probably because I was so excited for this book to come out for like over a year and got back into PJO for a bit and read some of Mark Oshiro’s books and greek mythology and stuff, so I think it wasn’t just me reading any random bad book it disappointed me more that it was poor quality because I wanted to love it so much.

It did have some actually good parts, the troglodytes were cute … I can’t remember the other stuff but it was there I swear lol! If you enjoyed it I’m happy for you! Don’t let me ruin a book you like, you deserve to feel joy 😘💐

i dont think ive seen anyone rlly discuss this yet but one scene im still miffed they took out was the hellhound attacking percy during capture the flag (after the showdown between clarisse and percy). this isn’t so much a gripe for 1-to-1 accuracy but rather what it represents. least important to most important (in my opinion):

1. percy’s powers are forced to fully manifest. his displays escalate, from percy making the fountain grab nancy bobofit, to spraying clarisse in the toilets, then finally to heal himself. it makes sense that his displays should escalate in response to his opponents, instead of a repeat of clarisse and gang trying to bludgeon him.

2. the chapter where it happens is when percy starts realizing that chb is not a perfectly safe haven and the gods arent all that (“i could begin to understand luke’s resentment…”). clarisse may be holding a monumental grudge against him; but the hellhound is pre-meditated, murderous intent, and it requires scheming and betrayal from someone inside/affiliated with camp. because chb is no longer a place where percy can just blend in as unclaimed and hide forever, poseidon is essentially cornered into claiming him, and the quest is inevitable.

3. the hellhound tells us just how dire the stakes are even while percy is esconced in chb—the lengths to which the antagonist is willing to go in order to draw out the war between zeus and poseidon, to kill anything standing in his way. the hellhound tells us how dangerous kronos—AND LUKE—are, a point that is underscored by the following chapter describing the iconic (TO ME!) horse and eagle dream… which is something they also took out.

for comparison, in the show, capture the flag ends with annabeth pushing percy into the water so he heals from the injuries dealt to him by clarisse. so to me its not as impactful and, in an on-brand move by the tv show, severely diminishes the stakes of situation, so instead we get chiron horse-splaining the whole situation rather than actually feeling the consequences of it.

you could argue that the show version does achieve points 1 and 2, just differently—or not to the fullest degree, depending on if you agree with me or not. point 3 though is what irritates me particularly. it’s the show’s take on defanging luke. i could understand removing the scorpion because yeah it’s feasible that kronos would try to take a softer route with percy and recruit him.

but removing the hellhound, which is the murder situation where you could actually still make luke not entirely at fault for the situation (kronos threatened him, kronos foresaw that percy would be in that spot but luke didnt, etc.) is basically just. absolving him of any actual moral reprehensibility in the show. which i dont like. luke’s character is one that i def agree can afford to be made more sympathetic, especially since in tlt-som hes quite a cardboard cutout villain (likely bc rick didnt know fully yet his plans/vision for luke), but the show just swings in that opposite direction, almost as if it’s too afraid that it will be too complex/polarizing for its audience. as a longtime luke fan its insulting; and as a pjo fan it’s quite worrying, because if they miss the point of luke’s character, high chances are they miss the point and spirit of the series entirely.

to conclude, this is not to say that this scene, or any singular scene at all, is the make or break for me, or for anyone at all (though i think the lotus casino scene/episode may be a close placeholder for that lol). however, it is, in my opinion, one part in a very long string of show retcons that swap the source for something worse or with less heart.

To all the show doubters: you CANNOT say the final episode wasn’t absolutely great. Very few major issues, and actually lived up to the books (mostly)!

i obviously have like 16 full length essays in my head but imma spare y’all that for now.

i speak as a show doubter here. i havent watched the show yet because i have a grad review in 2 weeks that i'm supposed to be working on and i simply dont have the TIME to binge an entire show without feeling a truckload of guilt afterwards.

nothing against you, or anyone who enjoys the show! but i accidentally saw a clip from the final episode that INFURIATED me.

it's luke's betrayal, and somehow....annabeth was there. i don't want to comment on anyone's acting because this is just one scene and i don't want to be too harsh. but my issue is that annabeth was there at all.

first off - if she was there, there is no WAYYYYYYYYY annabeth's first instinct would be to attack luke if she overheard him. this is her FAMILY, the one person she truly felt she knew and who she felt knew her. she'd be stunned, man. not defiant in the face of his betrayal. look at the books! she rushes to hold the sky for him, making that decision in the brief moment it causes him pain!

anyway:

annabeth being absent is the POINT. in the books, she doesnt see luke leave, she doesnt know/understand his reasoning, and ON TOP OF ALL THAT she has to wait for like a week for percy to wake up and tell her how things went down. during that week she has to come to terms with the fact that 1. luke's left her and the camp, 2. he attacked percy, 3. he's joined kronos, and 4. he didn't care about her enough to give her an explanation or even say goodbye.

i feel like this DIRECTLY leads into her attitude towards him in EVERY. OTHER. PJO. BOOK following the first one. she is desperate for answers, desperate to believe that there's still some good in him. she wants to hear it from him. she wants to SAVE him. she defends him from percy's judgement MULTIPLE TIMES, tells him percy didn't know him, but she did. she truly believes he's just lost his way. she doesn't understand how he's fallen because she wasn't there to see it. and when she finally does, it's STILL hard for her to process.

i feel like her being there just ruins a lot of that. or maybe i'm just being overly nitpicky. which...that's kinda my thing. wcwsthwas exists because i'm nitpicky.

i don't want to diminish anyone's experience if it's been a positive one, least of all yours because i really do appreciate your inputs! this is just me ranting here because that scene bugged me so much. maybe the rest of the show is great and i'll be eating my words soon enough. i guess we'll have to see!

ive never made an oc before literally ever in my life (let alone 5) but im working on the lore rn and maybe sometime this month i'll do character designs but im really busy rn. definitely by the end of summer tho

additional info:

rick has paranoia depression anxiety adhd and autism (but he refuses to go to therapy so most of these arent actually diagnosed, but im literally his creator so i know, with the exception of paranoia (due to his psycotic break he was briefly forced into citadel therapy or whatever) and depression. i dont think he knows about the anxiety/he refuses to acknowledge it and he self medicates his adhd. he knows about the autism) hes also still an alcoholic (like most ricks i think) his beth jerry and summer's whereabouts are unknown (at least until i think of smth better 😭)

morty's rick is dead but when he was alive he was lowkey kinda nice (if overly and unhealthily dependant on morty) so morty misses him dearly :( morty tried to help his rick recover from dianes death and stop him from destroying himself finding rick prime but he couldnt and he blames himself for ricks death, he has a lot of abandonment issues and maybe some ptsd too. hes a bit more prickly than your standard morty until he really gets close to someone, hes less immediately trusting. after his rick died he ran away from home to the citadel, trying to find another rick but after a few years and about 5 ricks he realised it was useless and he would never be able to really replace his rick. his family was assigned another morty after he split and they're fine. he hung around the morty town locos for a while until finding summer x-22

summer's whole family is alive still but she ran away from home due to her jerry being abusive, as i mentioned earlier. she stole ricks portal gun and portalled over to the citadel, but the portal gun was damaged and she couldnt go anywhere else. morty l9-dd found her crying behind the creepy morty and tried to steal her portal gun (bcs the morty town locos fw portal fluid) but she pinned him against a wall and told him she'd slit his throat out if he didnt help her so he agreed. they bonded after that and became pretty much inseparable.

summer confided that she hadnt had a good relationship with her morty bcs he always turned a blind eye to the abuse and excused jerry. morty told her he spent so much time trying to keep his rick from spiralling that he never formed much of a relationship with his summer

when they get to dimension N0T beth and jerry seem perfect but they soon find out that the rick of this dimension was dead of suicide or smth and that beth tried to commit to after his death maybe. beth here is also an alcoholic, like c-131 is and jerry is in charge of keeping up appearances, which is harder once you have 3 new people living in your broken home.

im not sure a lot of this still might change it needs a lot of work

defining traits (both personality and physical):

rick: more quiet, often zones out and seems like hes not even there, but still bitchy when he does talk. when they first get to N0T he barely leaves his room for 2 months and beth keeps panicking bcs shes worried he'll kill himself like her rick. even tho she doesnt know him he looks so much like her rick did (bcs theyre both ricks duh) and its just stirring back up some stuff for her. his hair is a little flatter than c-137. perhaps he has a fringe. maybe he wears a soft wool jumper. je has self harm scars but always wears long sleeves, so theyre not visible

morty: his tones a bit sharper, hes more skeptical of ppl than morty prime is. hates rick prime almost as much as a-26m does. darker yellow t shirt (like the mortys in mortytown) scars across his eye (I KNOW IM NOT ORIGINAL OK i didnt want to put the scar down his lip bcs i didnt want to assosciate him with evil rick and morty, he has nothing to do with them) maybe the scar is across his cheek idk

summer: always a bit on edge, carries a knife on her at all times. incredibly mistrusting of jerry N0T when they got there. still weary of him and doesnt let him get too close. jerry is too tired trying to keep up appearances to really do much to try and ease summers mistrust of him. black tank top instead of pink. hot pink belt on her jeans tho maybe. loose hair bcs a ponytail is too easy to grab, sharp nails, painted pink. bruises on her arms that start to fade in the beginning of her time on the citadel with morty

beth: often out of it or drunk, more so the more time rick morty and summer stay bcs she cares less and less about keeping how shitty shes doing from them. at the beginning she seems like a perfect housewife, or someone putting on a performance of one. looks pretty much the same if not a little more disheveled, in the beginning wears one of those fancy white frilly aprons with a red heart embroidered. drops the apron as she drops the act

jerry: tired, dark circles maybe (rick and morty also have these, summer and jerry wear makeup to cover them, beth and rick have eyebags also) starts wearing the apron when beth stops lol, defeated demeanour, kinda depressed a lot of the time. lonely

anyway a lot of this is probably gonna be changed idkkkk

rick and morty: about 2-3 months. both desperately missed their old partners which sped it up a bit but morty was scared of getting attached and rick at the start was too out of it most days to really form any kind of connection also he was scared of getting attatched too but for different reasons (morty was scared he'd lose another rick, rick felt like everyone he got close to ended up worse off (diane, his prev morty))

rick and summer: like maybe 5 months, they didnt interact much at first, like i said rick was too out of it and summer didnt really trust rick and saw him as unstable, but as rick grew closer to morty, summer slowly became a little less suspicious and maybe rick helped her with smth and they bonded over that idk

rick and beth: their initial relationship was not healthy, beth trying desperately to prevent rick from killing himself and rick not being willing to work on himself healthily, causing beth great panic and anxiety, but after like 6 months or so they become drinking buddies, still not the healthiest father-daughter relationship but it eases beths mind and makes rick feel less alone

rick and jerry: even after like 10 months living at the smith house rick and jerry dont have much of a relationship, both are too caught up in their own exhaustion to make an effort to bond, may change at some point

morty and summer: started to form a relationship within the first week of meeting eachother, maybe 7 or so months before they encountered rick (i need to make a timeline) probably the strongest relationship of all of these listed

morty and beth: surprisingly quickly, within the first 1 or 2 months, morty misses his mum and he wants to try and help beth a bit

morty and jerry: mutual respect for eachother, morty helps jerry out around the house and with things, started like this after anytime between a few weeks and 2 months

summer and beth: 4 months, took a while but eventually they formed a bond, its easier for summer to relax around beth and beth likes having a daughter

summer and jerry: still distrust after 10 months, will likely take a long time for any kind of relationship to form, no matter how minor

beth and jerry: pre established relationship obviously but its not a very good or happy one, maybe after 9 months they start trying to work on it again

I thought i'd almost finished this one but for some reason lost it. okay STARTING AGAIN

The Proud Family: HE'S SO... DIS..FUNKTOINAL.. CAN YOU FEEL IT.. LIKE HE FEELS IT. It's bobby proud ya'll! Look in the times i've covered this series I haven't been shy about how much I love this guy, funny, a hilaroiusly on point rick james impression, and he has the best musical number in the series and tha'ts in a series where Lou Rawls also sings.

The series itself.. is okay. I respect it's representation, animation style and a lot... but I just can't vibe with the mean spirit of it's comedy. It's something I HOPED louder and prouder would tinker with but barely did. It's just not for me. I still consider it a classic just not my classic.

Kim Possible: DOOP DOOP DOO DOO OH YEAHHHH YEAHHH YEAHH. It's Ron. While the series cast is stacked (It also has patrick fucking warburton in one of his best roles), I gotta give it to ron the perfect sidekick: he's panicky and sarcastic.. but genuinely good emotinal help most of the time. Plus ron x kim is easily the best friends to lovers scenario in western animation.

The show itself is not only one of my faviorite disney shows (it as on the list I keep bringing up), but the kind of spy fiction I like: the goofy over the top parodic kind. I"m just not really into the hardcore cloak and dagger stuff (With few exceptions) but this.. basically a superhero show, that's more my speed. An excellent rogues gallery, whip smart comedy and truly amazing design and voice work make this one of the best things disney's ever made and while certainly as 2000's as fuck, still holds up REALLY well. Still need to review so the drama. maybe this prom season. Note to self review so the drama this prom season

Lilo and Stitch The Series: 625. He's hilarous (Rob Paulsen everybody), fun to watch and makes the perfect buddy pairing with gantu, and while I didn't see all of the finale movie, he gets a proper happy ending. I also admit part of this is 625 actually PREDATES the series: he appeared in the disney adventures tie in comics which I read in the build up to the movie and serve as a prequel so I was already attached, so having him become full canon, let alone one of the best parts (the only change being his fur became yellow, which honestly is a better look) The show itself was excellent. It was an easy sell for young me as I deeply loved the movie and said comics, and loved monster taming shows which this defintely was. In typical disney fashion they didn't really captalize on this far as I can tell, but I love that despite being one of these gotta catch em all shows, it finds a unique hook: instead of just capturing the experiments fitting the original Lilo is finding each one a home. Granted there's way more focus on the first part, but it provides some fun monster of the week shenanigans and is a neat way to build on the original: We never got to SEE the other experiments outside of disney adventures, so this built out the world a bit and even got a proper finale. Leeroy and stitch sounds pretty by the numbers but hey, at least they finished their big overarching quest and gave ruben a proper home. Good stuff.

Dave the Barbairan: Dave the buh buh buh barbarian himself. One of Daniel Cooksys best roles. Hilarious, adorable and a coward without being obnoxious.

The show itself was a fun meta as hell riff on Conan, a character I didn't know existed as a kid and care about only in parody. Funny, excellent and NOT ON DISNEY PLUS ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS

Brandy and Mr Whiskers: I dont' really have a favoirite. I remember being.. eh on this one. It feels like a lesser version of mike lu and og, and this fish out of water story is super common. The art direction and voice acting is top notch and I like brandy as a character, but it just wasn't for me.

The Buzz on Maggie: Great theme song, don't have a faviorite character again (I know it's part why these descriptions), and I remember liking it but don't remember it well enough to comment. Also not on disney+. It's.. ti's piling up.

American Dragon Jake Long: HE'S COOL HE'S HOT LIKE A FROZEN SUN, HE'S YOUNG AND FAST HE'S THE CHOSEN ONE PEOPLE WE'RE NOT BRAGGIN HE'S THE AMERICAN DRAGON. God theme songs in this era fucking slapped. And that' snot exageration. Every theme song in this block is a banger. Barring lilo and stitch which I geninely forget but isn't bad.

Anyways faviorite character is Rose. Mae whitman gives a great performance taking what could've been another sotck love intrest.. and flipping it as both rose as huntsgirl and rose as herself feel like simply two sides of her and her and jake's romance and the drama involved was fucking cake to me. It especially sticks out as i've been working on a project with superheroes and what not from this era and most romance plots.. weren't great (Kimron is also an exception) and are easy to chuck out.. but this one. This is the core of the series. Th eheart of it. And rose herself is compelling. While Disney would later get a real taste for this sort of story, see lena, sasha and amity, this was the first.

The show itself is one I badly need to rewatch, I know common refrain but while it has a few iffy parts, the whole just works: the magical setting is fun and unique, as while there were other shows with a mystic bent in the genre (Jackie Chan Adventures and Xiaolin Showdown) both were globe trotting adventure shows (and the best, i'd gladly do kids wb) while Jake long is a teen superhero show and urban fantasy. It has a great core, a great main antagonist at first in the huntsclan, and is a lot of fun. The only problem I really remember is the rogues gallery was kinda thin, with it mostly being the hutnsclan and the dark dragon, while kinda neat, very thin in comparison. The huntsmaster wasn't super deep, but the fantastic racisim and sense of threat compesnated. Still a very excellent show well wroth a reboot or revivial. Actually on disney+ this time.

The Emperor's New School: HE'S GOING TO KUZCO ACADEMY WHERE HE'S ABOUT TO LEARN HIS ABC'S! Kronk. Always Kronk. patrick warburton only didn't win the kim possible one because ron exists and only by a hair.

Anyways this show's decent. Not amazing, but I remember liking it. Does it go back on the ending of the film a bit? yes. Is it entirely plausabile Kuzco would backslide a little? entirely. He's still part of pacha's family, he's not nearly AS bad, he's just still egotistical and a tad arrogant. Also a bit of a sexual harasser. It was solid fun and while the premise is a bit forced KUZCO HAS TO GO TO SCHOOL OR ELSE YIZMA GETS THE THRONE, it somehow works.

The Replacements: Tasumi I like her design and while I didn't get to see her unmasking the premise sounds intresting

As for the series itself pretty good. I heard it got even better later on, as early on it's pretty stuck to the formula: call for a replacement, it dosen't work out, see why the original wasn't that bad or reason with them. That said the mere concept of calling a company to replace people and two orphans finding family with a super spy and daredevil is so creative it gets a pass. It may have a formula at first, but the concept is so unique and intresting you can't help but enjoy it. It also had a great style. Woudl gladly give it another go

(The tldr is this is about gender and then versus now) I was listening to the podcast Enterprise Incidents on youtube. The Mudd's Women episode. The podcasters are 2 fans since the original airing, and I like them generally because they're really well informed in screenwriting and directing choices and so to some degree their analysis touches points I find a chunk of star trek type commentaries tend to miss: that optimisitc vision of the future, that star trek's goal was to be progressive but it also at times had flaws of its time (something Im painfully familiar with regarding Rick Berman and DS9 and TNG, so its nice hearing older watchers aware of those flaws from ToS). Now. Its not perfect. In my ideal podcast Id like to find some day (lol) a guy podcaster is capable of acknowledging the influence the spirk premise/fan perception had in some ways (from The Motion Picture thyla, that "i imagine love of men in that time" quote from Rodenberry, the Asimov suggestion to make them a team to help Kirk be accepted more by audience and Spocks individual popularity tying to Kirk was partly a bid to link their popularity). And I dont know that for all the great ideas they have, that they have any idea of the spirk fandom perception (like that quote in academia about slash fiction being the end of the Wrath of Khan if the glass were removed) or how the canon goal of making a duo unit at least created the dynamic that led to that fandom interpretation. But they do touch on many a good thing some less layer-looking people miss. They notice Kirk's actual personality (should be easy but often failed due to cultural perception versus The Show itself), Nimoys acting choices and spocks development into the character he became, the show itself deciding its identity over time and its ventures in various angles until then, what worked and what didnt regarding the progressive future versus the biases of the time it was made. They miss some nuance but theyre doing really in depth so its a treasure trove overall.

Now in Mudds Women, they miss some nuance of a story about beauty and worth that I think... i dont know. I think yeah the writers failed to hit the goal story meant to be told, but i also think outside a women perspective it can often be a miss in such storytelling (yoko taro doing the Singer in Nier Automata is the first time a guy telling a raw story about beauty and its impossible standards, invasive toxic expectations, and self destructive pressures, managed to feel totally on point and realistically managed). So i sort of yeah expect mudds women to need to be viewed Generously to grasp the message, and i sort of yeah expected guy podcasters to at best recognize where the story failed (which they did) but unfortunately not realize all the story was aiming to do (because it does Approach many topics i feel women and beauty standards and ppl who grew up in certain enviornments would recognize as Trying to be a reference to a real problem - the episode does say a fair bit if ur used to looking for those points, but not Super well done so i can see why an audience less used to relating to such points would notice them much less).

But the podcast said something this episode i found so refreshing. They mention how mudd explains how the venus drug works: it makes you "more of what you are" makes men more strong and aggressive, women more soft and feminine. Basically its a line about idealized traditional gender roles when ToS was made. And the podcaster mentions yes as a teen first watching (when we probably most feel a pressure to fit in, still most likely to believe society expects us to meet it and rewards that standard) it sounded like the drug made u better. But that in the life he lived, with the family he had, he had never been raised to think he had to be strong or women had to cook or any of that strict expectations. Then they talk about how the discussion of gender has grown so much in these years, and trans people of course can live more openly, and they say the question in society is like what does it mean to be a certain gender anyway.

And the guy says. Well i always thought and strongly think, when i say im a man, it means nothing. Because a man can be anything. Anyone can be any way, like any things, do any things, look any way. Being a certain gender means nothing beyond "im that gender."

And god how refreshing that was.

Growing up, in the 90s, yeah i felt to some degree those gender roles and expectations somewhat pushed as a teen: when girls start being pressured to wear makeup (by ads, movies, peers, trying to please crushes, avoid insults etc) and boys start being pressured to be strong (bullied for not being, attacked for being perceived as less strong by any number of reasons they get singled out by peers, movies and ads telling them their lack of strength is their reason for any failures etc). But like. There was ALSO a big push growing up, that i saw, of girls can do anything. Girls can cook or do construction, can wear dresses or play sports, can wear makeup or none at all, can have long hair or chop it off, can go into STEM or childcare, can marry or never marry, can be the career head of home or a stay at home parent, basically: anything, all of that or none of it or anyrhing in between. That was the direction of progress anyway. Guys were a bit behind (and oh of course bullying with their own peers limited their options of what wasnt ostracized) but we were seeing more acceptance of intelligence as equally desireable and acceptable to strength (at least for adult men), more media glorifying the nerds, more examples of a bigger variety of men with more niches that could still be considered ideals. And the result of that in some ways was good, i saw more guys my generation more accepting of their love of painting, cooking, wearing makeup, more guys who didnt body shame themselves as much, who didnt feel belittle themselves if they were stay at home dads or made less income, more who talked about their emotions than my parents generation ever did, more genuine friendships than we ever saw during toxic-teenage-pit when the strict standards weighed heaviest. The ideas were moving toward what is a man? Anything he wants. What is a woman? Anything she wants. What is a person? Anything they want to be. What is your gender? Whatever you feel it is. And it doesnt need to match up to Any preconcieved notions or box to be "justified" because no gender has specific strict traits it must include. Yes we still knew society had "ideals" for genders that it pushed, and that traditional and conservative thinking people held themselves to. But for people in general? What is your gender? What I feel I am. What must you do to Be that gender? Nothing. Anyone can be anything as any gender.

And god it was so refreshing hearing someone say that again. What does being a man mean? Nothing. Because a man can be anything. Anyone can be anything. Theres no box a person fits into, no box of traits any gender must conform to in order to be valid. A person can be anything and do anything and have any traits interests looks, and be whatever gender they are.

I dont know if its the way the worlds medias been shifting (so opinions we get stuck hearing more of), or cause i see trans people so often expected by society to conform to those stricter gender ideals with this weight of threat and isolation if someone in the majority finds reasons to attack (but in the end they always might, the whole thing is theyre fucked for attacking to begin with). But its like. God i miss when gender meant in my head only: what am i? What do i feel good calling myself? What feels like home. Cause im me, and me is not changing to appease some strangers. (Though i am to some degree, we all do even cis people do, because those stupid old ideals are widespread enough all ppl face some punishment or threat if they deviate from the strict boxes, despite no one fully fitting them). But like. If im me and i can do anything, what feels like home? Thats all it is to me. I miss seeing it that way. I miss when i didnt see quite so much of the looming strict standard pushing so hard on everyone to conform more. To try and force all people to cut themselves down and confine themselves to roles that serve what anyway besides littling all of us, oppressing all of us in limitation. (I mean. I know why it spreads. Maybe conservative voices are louder now about their ideal gender roles then when i grew up, or maybe its louder cause im an adult now. It doesnt mean they have any point.)

You are a person. You can be anything. Your gender is whatever you feel it is. Your gender does not inherently define your life and what you can do and be. Whatever forces we feel, remember whatever brings you joy is okay to be. Its okay to be you.

Like. Yes a person of a specific gender can define it very specifically in what that gender means TO them. How They define it for themselves. But that definition isnt universal and there is no limit to the definition of what a specific gender's people can be. A woman can look any way have any life any interest any traits any values. You can't define a woman as specific things and not others, a woman is as broadly defined as there are so many unique women in this world with so many varied unique experiences selves lives. Any gender is not universally always a confined list of traits, because theres all kinds of people with all kinds of traits of specific genders. What is a man, anything. What is a woman, anything. What is a nonbinary person, anything. A genderqueer person, anything. Any specific (or unspecific or undefined) gender person, anything. People are so varied they have too many unique traits to be always these X Y Z things and never these A B C things. Youre the gender you are cause its what feels right to you. But your definition of your own gender For u isnt universal to all people of your gender, cause people define their gender all kinds of different ways and people of your gender can have any traits in this whole spectrum of being alive.

i'll be honest, i haven't read toa (only short snippets when i want to see a specific scene), so i just read this article abt it, and it's frustrating that almost every example of diversity rick includes is riddled w harmful stereotypes. like, google is right there to help you avoid at least some! (psa to anyone else reading this, google "harmful [x] stereotypes" before making a character you're unfamiliar with!) the wwii stuff...rereading the series again like two years ago shocked me bc i had completely erased the entire plotline from my memory as a kid. some of these choices have me questioning the editors at the time, bc there were definitely things an editor should've pointed out if they were reading the full text.

When Frank drops em off at the mall, Tom bows and mutters her own word of gratitude before running after the kids into the mall. The Spookeez and her run off into the dolls section, and Tom asks what they might want. They respond that they'd like a Happy Fella, so she grabs one and the three end up encountering Rick. Rick doesn't say anything about them being too young to buy here because they're with Tom, but he does ask why they're dressed for Halloween even though it's June—to which Tom responds by saying—"AH, DEAREST MALL WORKER—DONT YOU KNOW????". Pump says—"It's Spooky Month!". Rick denies that it is, which causes Pump to whisper something about him not knowing it's Spooky Month while giggling, and Tom just smiles down at him.

Tom is off screen for a bit of the Candy Dealer segment since she's paying for some other stuff she decided to buy—and ends up walking out once they pretend to be dead, but she sees them 'dead' and let's out a cut off scream before it cuts to the next scene. But I can't decide if this should happen or if she should happily walk out with the kids and encounter the Candy Dealer with them?? If she does, I can imagine her acting equally oblivious as the kids are since the moment she hears the word 'candy', she immediately sees an opportunity to go see Kevin. She probably proudly exclaims something about how she then great princess will personally transport it to the candy shopkeeper. Before immediately pretending to be dead with the kids after saying 'LET US JOURNEY TOWARD THE MEDICAL AID CENTER!', or they drop down dead and she's just like '..KIDS??? KIIIIIDS?".

Either way, Tom probably wakes up in a hospital bed off screen or she's somewhere else in the hospital. But either way, I can imagine she's probably talking with Patty, at least until she finds the kids outside after presumably just casually walking out of the hospital bedroom like she wasn't dead a few seconds ago. Or just walks out and goes 'AH—THERE YOU ARE—! ER... WHY DO YOU LOOK SO DIZZING-Y?". Either way, she probably just scoops up the kids since they're injured or fixes them up before walking to the candy store with them.

She proudly goes to the candy store with the kids while smiling to herself, and if the kids are still injured—Kevin probably says the 'What happened to you??' line—which leads to Tom saying that she doesn't know and that she just found them like that. She says not to worry and fixes them up right then and there though. But after she does that, Skid and Pump ask for candy cans. And Kevin nearly refuses, but gives in when Tom whines that he's not being very fair, and gives the kid candy cans. However, Tom is reminded of the 'sugar' by Pump, and with surprising cheerfulness, she hands him it. When he anxiously asks what it is, Pump says the 'sugar from the candy dealer' line, and Tom tells him to be sure to enjoy it while not so secretly leaving a note on it, before leaving with the kids. (Alternatively if the kids aren't injured she doesn't fix them up—but the scene just kinda plays out how it does here anyway). The note that she slips onto it is revealed to read 'DISPOSE OF THIS!!', which makes Kevin more stressed out since he doesn't know how the fuck to casually get rid of drugs, even more so when John and Jack walk in the moment he grabs it.
