Managers👏fucking👏communicate👏challenge!👏

I've asked many, many, many times that if managers are going to ask me to come into work on my days off to provide the necessary information. They refuse or "forget" or only provide partial information. So if I'm not given all of this information initially, I am not responding.

1. What time do they want me to clock in at? "ASAP" or "whenever you can be here" can sometimes be acceptable answers, in instances where I'm extending my already scheduled shift, not coming in on my day off. But if that is the answer, then I definitely need to be provided with more information. Such as...

2. How long will the shift be? I will accept answers in two forms: "from x time to x time" and "come in at x time for a x hour shift" This is actually a surprisingly big one, because I learned the hard way that if I didn't confirm ahead of time, I got suckered into a 2 hour shift. A complete waste of time. Or the opposite- I end up getting roped into an 8 hour shift but wasn't given the information ahead of time and couldn't pack a lunch and now I have to waste half of my lunch break buying food during lunch rush.

3. What department? Ok so I clock in and go....where? At my store, we are all cross-trained in all departments (or we're supposed to be- I am at least- so we can fill in wherever needed) I need to know what section of the store to head to. And depending on the department, I need different tools. For example, if I'm a cashier, I usually don't need to grab a box cutter. But if I'm stocking, I need one to open shipping boxes. Also, I hate register and I want the option to decline ahead of time.

I just received a text that simply says "are you available to come in?" which meets 0/4 of the necessary information requirements, so I will not be responding.

(Just to be clear- I have repeatedly explained to all members of management over multiple years that I need ALL of this information in order to determine if I can cover a shift. It's not like I made up secret rules in my head and magically expect everyone to read my mind. I have been very clear and consistent about needing this information. So no information=no coverage from me)

I am always thinking what if the quest of seven never happened.. but instead Rick wrote a new series (instead of hoo in this au) about camp Jupiter and whatever the romans were getting up to???? Would Jason still be getting the same hate?

LIKE OBVIOUSLY people would still be comparing him to Percy (unless this series came out before pjo for some reason) … but what is the reason for doing so?

Even in the canon books where they are interacting and all, why does everyone feel the need to compare two characters and then hate one because they are a “knock off” of the other one…

I just dont get why Jason gets a lot of hate for being different than Percy??? Like he’s a different character isn’t that the point?

People are out here saying they don’t like him because he’s just like a boring version of Percy… or i don’t like how he was portrayed in the books because it’s different from Percy.

Like obviously there are parallels between them — being “leaders” of their camps. But it was all done on purpose to explain specifically why Hera/Juno needed them for the quest-their respective camps would trust their judgement when introducing the other camp.

THEY ALSO HAVE DIFFERENT VIEWS ABOUT LEADERSHIP and different ideas of what it means to them / how they want to take on their role.

But when people say *Jason’s powers are weak compared to Percy’s* and *jason’s not as goofy as percy* …. Have you ever considered it was meant to be that way???

Recently I’ve been working on a little SolarNexus thing, in an idea I had where I was like; Nexus, Dark Sun, and Ruin, but they’re all trans. Because like why not??? Nexus and Dark Sun are trans fem, Ruin is trans masc. And I’ve been thinking about a ship between Dark Sun and main dimension Sun.

Because like, Dark Sun mentioned in an episode to Ruin that she is doing this for Sun. I know it’s a ‘I want to help him be free like I am sort of thing’, but like, what if she develops feelings for this Sun she’s working to help???? And then they kiss 👏👏👏

Prompt 15 for Riddle, Kalim, and Silver? If I pick the 1st year, I think the prefect might quickly discover who it is and I can't choose any of them.

I think those 3 might really, REALLY want to dance with the prefect, while the prefect just trying to hide.

15. Formal balls weren't a thing in your world so you have been hiding in this strategically chosen corner to avoiding having to step on anyone's toes. Unfortunately someone really, really, REALLY, wants to dance with you and has managed to track you down AGAIN.

Hm I'll admit when I wrote this prompt I wasn't exactly thinking of this as being one with mistaken identity, but I like your thinking annon! Kalim especially would want to dance with the prefect, it's one of his favorite things to do and Yuu is one of his favorite people.

notes: they/them used for Yuu, references to voicelines for Riddle's Masquerade Card, Kalim came out a bit of a tease idk if that's ok? And some french in Rook's part that I don't know if I used right. The other event requests can be found on my masterlist here.

Riddle

"It is against the rules to loiter at an event like this!" You had not even bothered to get a good look at your accuser before slipping away into the crowd. You do your best to keep your head high and act as natural as possible, searching desperately for yet another place to hide.

"Look I am sure you are very nice, but I have a friend to get to!" You call over your shoulder, and yelp in surprise as the surprisingly nimble knight pins you to the wall.

"And just who is this friend?" You can see a danger in his smile that is familiar, but you can't quite place where the nerves in your throat come from, but you are surprised to find it's not from fear.  

“Ummmmm-” You desperately, fruitlessly, look around the ballroom for any sign of someone you know.  Who the hell thought giving everyone in this school a mask was a good idea?  Now you are going to be forced to take a crack at picking a savior from the worst possible line up of idiots in all of Twisted Wonderland.  “Riddle!”  Because that’s got to be a safe bet, right?  There is no way that the tiny teapot tyrant would ever be brave enough to let out such a dark laugh and push you further into the wall at the call of his name. “I- I’m supposed to meet up with Riddle, so could you, you know let me go?”

“Go?  But that would defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it?”  Riddle takes off his mask, with the intent to spare your feelings as your eyes pop halfway out of your skull in despair.  “You have been so dutifully looking for me prefect, that is why you kept running, right?  Someone as well behaved as you would never dream of shirking their duties at such an important event.”  But despite saying that he doesn’t dream of letting you out from under him, because he knows you will run again you remind yourself.  Logical Riddle has to know this is inappropriate but won’t realize it ever because it’s in the name of enforcing the rules.  “Well?”

“Um sure!”  You release some of your embarrassment by carefully examining the ceiling and laughing just a bit too long, missing the angry pout on Riddle’s face when your attention is no longer his and his alone.  “Just what were those duties again?”

“Dancing.”  He is angry now, he has to be, better stop looking at that ceiling and let out some more nervous giggles.  “You did say you were going to dance with me, yes?”  No you just said you were looking for him, but you cannot deny how fast your heart jumps up into your throat at the thought of dancing with Riddle.

“I suck though.”  You blurt out the words before you can find a nicer way to say it, but for once Riddle does not scold you for your language.  He just finally steps back from pinning you to the wall, childish anger replaced with joyful confidence as he bows just so.

“You have absolutely no need to worry about your dancing, not when I am your partner.”  And oh how stupidly handsome he looks taking your hand and leading you to wherever it is he wants to go. 

Kalim

"Yuu!!!!" You hear your pursuer long before you see him, the bells sewn all over his costume would have alerted you even if he didn't insist on shouting your name as soon as he saw you. Avoiding him was easy too, but you were starting to run out of nooks and not liking the look of the crannies.

And you were starting to not have fun, not that you had been having loads of it once the dancing had truly started. Sure you could have tried asking Vil or Riddle for help but you knew they would be in the trenches already and didn't want to add to that.  It had also occurred, or perhaps it was politely suggested, to you that you could have asked for Kalim and Jamil’s help.  Ballroom dancing might not be what you have seen them do, but it is still dancing and you cannot picture either of them really hating it.  Yet for some reason, every time you had walked towards the mirror in the hall you had stopped in your tracks.  Much like you were stopped now by the swirling of other people and fabric, those jingle jangling bells finally clamoring directly in your ears as their owner decides to plop his head on your shoulder with a melodic laugh.

“Finally!  I was worried I was never going to catch up.  You turn to see a bright sunshine of a smile, his catlike mask hiding most of his features but the gentle concern peeking out from the eyes can only really belong to one person at this school.  “C’mon!  You can’t be having fun just watching everyone, right?”  So Kailm says but you still feel somewhat unsure even as he wraps his arms around you to give a small hug.  He even rubs his cheek against yours truly committing to the cat bit.

“Then why aren’t you dancing?”  You ask quietly.  “You can’t have been having fun chasing after me all night.”

“Well it wasn’t all night.”  Even though he asked you to dance, he doesn’t move to let you go.  Almost as if he is just a bit more aware of your emotions than you think he is, as if he is afraid that you will run away from him again and that he will have to accept the rejection for real this time.  “And I did dance for a bit but then I thought ‘this would be so much more fun if Yuu were here’ so I went looking for you.”  He guides you slowly into a sort of sway, laughing softly when you finally relent to move your feet; rewarding your participation with loosening his embrace to fall around your waist and across your chest.

“Don’t blame me if I step on your feet.”  You grumble and you think he shakes his head from the sound of the bells but you are too embarrassed to look up at his face.

“But if I do I could keep asking you to dance by pretending to offer you lessons right?”  He hums along with the music and spins you around so you have no choice but to look at him now.  Kalim’s head is as light as his smile as he dips you into a faster dance.  “Oooh that’s much better, you’re smiling!  It looks wonderful on you.”  As it does on him.

Silver

Silver is comically unaware of how he comes off on a typical day, but tonight he has gotten enough strange looks that even he has started to notice.  He is undecided on whether or not it bothers him.  

“Prefect.”  You startle and Silver immediately lunges to catch your falling cup before returning his attention to you.  Or trying to anyway, he half wonders if you had tossed it as a distraction to assist in your get away.  It’s clever, maybe something he could use in the future but realistically his brain would probably take him dropping the cup as a sign it was time for lights out and only allow him a mental escape.  But he’s getting sidetracked, he is supposed to be looking for you.  He has a mission.

“Ah a masquerade!  Que c’est romantique!”  Rook has been saying some variation of that since the Headmage first announced his plans, but today he has an addition.  “You must be most excited Monsieur Sleepyhead.”

Silver starts, somewhat surprised at being singled out. “Malleus is extremely pleased, of course I’m excited.”  Rook shakes his head.

“Non, not like that, you must be excited for them.”  And though Rook does not point and SIlver does not turn his head he knows where the junior is looking.  His eyes have been inadvertently wandering towards you, he tells himself it is because Class A seldom gathers together in one place.  Because he needs to keep an eye on you, you are his Lord’s first friend and he wishes to honor your need to be protected.  “I am right, am I not?”

“I think so.”  He says with his usual even tone.  “The Prefect won’t have seen anything like it in their world, so they should take this chance to-”

“Be swept off their feet by a handsome prince.”  Rook sounds like he is directing a play, Silver actually looks over his shoulder to check on you before he realizes Rook is speaking metaphorically.  “You will ask them to dance I trust?  With how often you think of them you must have been dreaming of it for some time now.”

He has no real way of knowing if that’s true, Silver never really remembers his dreams.  But something in him, perhaps it was the certainty Rook voiced his imagination, practically screams that he was right.  He has been dreaming of this, dreaming of you in his arms as he dances with you around a forest as his animal friends provide the music.  It feels real almost, as he once again finds you shying away from the crowd resolving to try a different approach.

“Yuu.”  The stranger’s voice is soft, as is his grip on the edge of your cape.  You find your breath caught up in the softness of it as he reaches up to remove his mask and reveal just who you have been running from all night.  “I’m sorry I frightened you, would you allow me to make it up to you?”  You barely recognize that you have nodded your agreement, too shocked at how natural the movements come to you as Silver guides you to the floor as if he has done this a hundred times before.  It’s surreal and dreamlike, the look in his eyes is trying to say something.  Something familiar, something you’ve heard before but not out loud, you don’t think.  But then you blink and the strange aura is gone from you both, replaced by the warmth of reality and the realization you were afraid for nothing.  So long as you had Silver to guide, you think you could fly.

EXANDRIAN 👏 WEDDING 👏 CELEBRATION👏 WORLDBUILDING👏

- Wedding rings convergently evolved in a lot of contexts due to some divine events/recurrences (ex: halos of some aasimar and divine casters). Though how they're used varies (some cultures have many, with rings being added as the couple has children or for other life events; some wear them in their hair or as body piercings; some insist the couple or someone close to them make the rings themselves; sometimes they're made as a chain that's ceremonially broken during the wedding and reforged).

- I love the common HC that elven weddings involve ceremonial knots and rope/string tying the couple together! Drow use white-silver threads (heated debate rage as to if this is nods to Loloth or the Luxon in the Dynasty), wood elves will use plant-based fibers grown from each family's land/plants that grow near their home, and all elves will use fancier material to indicate wealth. A common practice for half-elves, especially from societies where they’re more common and can share this knowledge, is to intersperse the weaving and knots with rings, or save the threads to make into necklaces or armbands.

- many Ashari wedding practices (a little different for each tribe) have their roots in Drashari & Age of Arcanum customs that survived. For Zephrah in particular, I like the idea of the couple writing their vows, folding the paper into a bird or flower or something specific to Them (Vaxleth would 100% do a raven) and sending it flying from the cliffs. I'm undecided if they're supposed to use wind spells/cantrips to keep them aloft or trust in the air to carry them and their hopes for the relationship. (The people living downwind think it's good luck to catch Ashari wedding vows, and sometimes make the trek up to return them to the happy couple.) They don't know this is adapted from the spell kites of Cathmoíra.

- Several parts of Wildemount include planting something Important as part of the ceremony. Either something that will grow (a tree, a vital crop, a favorite flower) or not (a memory capsule, an offering, or something meant to decay). If the planting doesn't go well, or if the plant/burried thing gets damaged down the line, it's seen as a terrible omen. Couples living in cities will keep theirs on windowsills or roofs to ensure they get enough light, and it’s a common source of gossip if a neighbor's plant is unwell or if the pot of soil tips during a storm, spilling out the gifts within.

- I've thought. So much. About Whitestone weddings. The city-state was very isolated for years, so their practices are very tailored to their home. Laurels are made out of the Sun Tree's shed leaves, which are also scattered around their feet. Weddings are usually held at dawn or midday for Pelor reasons, and the rings are weighed in scales blessed by Erathis to ensure the partnership is equal. The ceremony is usually held in front of the Sun Tree, and if the couple is very lucky or of high status a fallen bough will be brought with them into their marital home to keep them safe and blessed by its shade (and it's meant to be burnt as firewood should they face a challenge they feel they can't surmount, be it a terrible winter or awful fight). Most couples only get a twig or small branch though. Actually, you'll see soon ;3

- Vex's wedding ring is 100% forged from melted down gold pieces from her own person. Because there's a chance, however small, that one or two pieces used were among those Percy gave her when they first met. Percy includes some residuum in his, partially because he wanted to make sure their rings could both be used as Resurrection components should anything happen... and partially because he still remembers the Sunken Tomb and how his offering of residuum then was not accepted. He doesn’t want to forget what his mistake cost them, a reminder to be careful (what if he had succeeded? would Vax not have - then he might - fuck.).

hawkeye continues to just NOT pull without trapper here. the nurses are fully dismissing or ignoring his efforts, and honestly is he even trying that hard?? have we seen him get even one date?

i've been trying to come up with an "intricate rituals" joke about hawkeye and trapper but where the rituals are... girls. you get me.

i re-watched the pilot and the desk ep (for frank/margaret reasons DON'T JUDGE ME), and hawkeye and trapper LITERALLY end the pilot handcuffed together, and in the next episode talk about sharing a nurse. how am i supposed to take this???

speaking of nurses, you know that little 🙄 you have to ignore in 2024 whenever the women on m*a*s*h get called honey and sweetheart and baby on the job (though tbh i worked on a construction site and an ad sales office in the 2010's and got the same treatment -- but in the modern day it's done ironically babe)

BUT when potter calls margaret "good girl" after he gets shot??? total opposite feeling. i literally had to pause and take a moment. he's her dad now.

also when he tucks radar in???? everyone's dad actually

in loving memory of radar's other dad though, two important points:

how proud would henry have been of drunk & disorderly radar??

and henry's "i've always wondered if i might be radar's dad" bit is genuinely 900% funnier now that we know radar's mom looks EXACTLY like him.

i don't think i have ever circled back to talk about klinger, who became so so so awesome

it's so funny that in klinger's very first appearance and 30 times since then, he has been told straight up that wearing women's clothes will never work to get him out of the army. there's no explanation for his commitment to this particular form of passive resistance except that he genuinely loves it

the swamp rats built a still and klinger got a sewing machine and learned a craft. he's so good at it!! his looks are 🔥

The damp noodles you called your hair fell in front of your face yet again as you tried to style them.

A groan seeped past your teeth as you pounded a hand onto the freshers counter.

The door opened with a whoosh when you stomped quickly through the havoc marauder searching for someone.

That person however was not in the cockpit as you hoped.

“Where’s Tech.” You growled at Crosshair who was the only other person in the ship.

He continued to clean as normal while you stood there before finally he acknowledged you and answered. “Dunno.”

Rolling your eyes you asked. “Well do you know where a pair of scissors are?”

“Hmm.” He though for a moment disassembling another part of his blaster. “Dunno.”

“Wow thanks Cross your so helpful.” You grumbled leaving to same way you came in with frustrated footsteps

“Anytime. Always happy to help Y/N.” He called after you. The words were drowned out as you made your way off the ship.

The light of the setting sun was bright as you squinted along the horizons in search.

The figures of Hunter and Wrecker seemed to be sparing basking in the last few hours of the day. Thankfully however your sights landed on an open tool box laying by the bottom of the ship.

Quickly grabbing them you turned and were about the make your way inside when a voice stoped you.

“You go swimming Y/N?” Wrecker asked with a laugh walking up to you. “Looking like a wet tooka don’t you think.”

An elbow to his side made his laughter quite down just a bit.

“I hope you don’t plan yo cut your hair with those.” Hunter added when his brother was finished. “Believe me it’s not gonna go well.”

Wreckers laugher started back up. “I remember that serge.” His giggles broke apart his words. “You looked so stupid with half your hair a different length and all in you face. Those long necks weren’t thrilled.”

“Thanks Wreck.” Hunter rolled his eyes before he returned them to you.

“What am I supposed to do then?” You asked with a sigh placing the scissors in Hunter’s outstretched hand. “I really like this style.”

“You know Tech would be crushed if you cut it. He worked so hard on that.” Wrecker said looking between the two of you.

“Come with me I got an idea.” You followed Hunter back into the ship like his shadow as he scanned for something.

Unsatisfied he continued to where his bunk was, pulling something from underneath he presented to you his brilliant idea.

“There you go kid. It always keeps the hair from my face.” A bandana sat in Hunters hand. The red was a little more faded then the one he currently hand on. The skull design was printed on this one as well.

You started at him for a moment before quickly pulling him into a hug. “It’s perfect Hunter! We’re gonna match and everything now!”

Hunter went stiff under your hold before adding. “Well if you’ll turn around I’ll tie it for you.”

The bangs were brushed back from your eyes and the soft material was pressed against your forehead when Hunter was making sure it was centered. Tying it securely at the back of your head you beamed up at Hunter.

“I love it!” You exclaimed running from the room to show the others. A prideful smile was painted all over Hunters features as he followed you.

“Oh ho ho would you look at that!” He heard Wrecker practically shout as he leaned against the doorframe to the cockpit.

“Now we’re gonna have to get you matching armor as well!”

You looked over at Crosshair expectantly before he glanced up and met your gaze. After a moment he said. “Now everyone’s gonna know you’re with us when you cause a problem.”

You watched him continue to cleaning while laughing “Guess that means that your gonna have to make sure I don’t get caught then.”

“It appears I have missed something.” Tech appeared behind Hunter silently when he entered the ship. He carried many bags full of all different kinds of supplies.

Turning around and taking a bag from his brother Hunter said. “Ehh nothing much.”

You shook your head smiling to your self as you also took another bag from Tech.

“I like the headband.” Tech added when you were face to face.

You smiled again looking up to Tech. “Why thank you.” You dipped your head slightly. “I also heard about when Hunter cut his hair when you were cadets and I was wonder-“

“I’ll show you plenty of pictures in a moment after this stuff his organized.” He nodded his head knowingly shuffling passed you.

That was definitely going to be something to see

I love how you approach each topic you write about with sensitivity and empathy. Not many people would be able to cope with the heavy topics you get requested so often and as someone who has experience with some of the content you write, it can be so difficult to portray these experiences with accuracy and grace and yet you nail it every single time. The hardest part of mental illness is trying to explain it in a way that it makes sense to someone whose brain functions the way it is supposed to, and you make it look so effortless with your writing. If someone asked me "what does depression feel like?" Or "how can someone just not eat?" I would definitely have a moment where I consider sending them one of your works to read through because they so perfectly encapsulate the distress and turmoil of having a brain that works against you, and the thought processes and factors that allow unhealthy coping mechanisms to seep through and fester. I would like to reiterate just how hard it is to appropriately represent mental health issues in words alone and how often you spectactularly succeed in creating a work that is emotionally charged, while also introducing people to new ideas without neglecting the needs of people with mental health struggles. Bravo Mandy 👏

I am speechless- thank you so, so much for your kind words and confirmation that my writings indeed make a positive difference. My primary goal when I write is to brighten someones day, provide even a momentary distraction and/or prove to someone, anyone, that they're not alone in the struggles they may be going through. To be able to add empathy to someone who may not understand what another is going through is truly something fantastic to be able to do, and I am so, so glad that I am achieving that.

Some of the topics are hard- but these are such a reality for some. My hope as an author is that all those who might be struggling find my words and take comfort in knowing that someone out there understands- and that they are very much not alone. Hence why there is so little I won't write about. To do so would be a disservice to those who have gone through, or are struggling with events in their lives. Where I can tie in my own personal notes I do- and where I can't, I research or reach out to someone who can.

I appreciate every single request I get, and even more so- am grateful for the patience each sender has while I await my brain to do the buzz thing. That's partially why I'm so open about my philosophy that if I do turn a request down, I'll publicly post it with a reason why (and to date, I haven't had to do that). I can't tell you how many times I've been driving, working or otherwise engaged in something and pulled out the google doc because the idea and words just hit! Reading your message reaffirms that my writings are making a difference- thank you from the very bottom of my heart.

What's the argument for why twst's age rating should be put higher? I've been playing under the assumption that it's an all-ages game, and I never got to any point where I thought "a kid shouldn't see this" (although I am very open-minded when it comes to what I think kids can handle) so I've been wondering what specifically has people thinking it's a more mature game?

The biggest argument is that I am a bitter old gatekeeper with a stick that doesn’t want kids on their lawn (this isn’t their lawn, it’s a park, but the old gatekeeper doesn’t care).

Jokes aside, I think it’s a bit of a complicated topic, but I will try to explain my thoughts.

The game age rating is sometimes being used as an argument against adult fans enjoying the game or creating explicit content with its characters. I’ll dive into this later, but please keep this in mind while reading my entire reply because otherwise it does sound kind of deranged without this context lol To be honest, if not for that type of situations, I wouldn’t even be talking about this at all or being so gatekeeping. It would’ve help to filter out some annoying fans simply because those complaining are usually too immature both for understanding the media in question, ironically, and interacting with the fanbase in a proper way.

It is tricky because every age rating system is slightly different, and I’m guessing Twst uses Mobile software content rating system, so 4+/9+/12+/17+ for AppStore and 3+/7+/12+/16+/18+ for Google (apparently they use International Age Rating thing)… and in my quick 2 min search I couldn’t find any strict parameters that indicate the game belonging into a certain category according to these rating systems so I gave up, but. The point I am making is that yes, technically, Twst doesn’t have any nudity, any blood, profanity, substances and sexual content. But some of the themes brought up in the game + the way they are expressed don’t feel like 3-4+ content to me. I feel like even 13+ would’ve been more fair, not because a toddler couldn’t handle it, but because it doesn’t feel like it’s entirely suitable for them and they would have an ability to grasp what’s going on and have enough emotional maturity to understand some of the darker themes of the game. Why would 9+ or 12+ even exist if it was just a matter of “well there isn’t anything horny in it” (not saying that this is your point by the way! Your question is absolutely valid.)

I don’t think a kid wouldn’t be able to handle twst, in fact, I think kids are able to handle a lot of things they aren’t supposed to watch or play at their age. Just the other day I wanted to scold my younger sibling for playing a game with very dark themes, but then I remembered what I watched when I was their age. It depends on a person, so in terms of protecting kids, the age rating really doesn’t do anything: if they really wanted, they would have played it even if it was R18.

That being said.

People don’t always keep in mind that age rating and target audience are two completely different things. Yes, twst is 3+/4+, but its target audience are older teenagers and young adults (mostly in their 20s) – this is the majority of people who are invested in the game. And thus people who want to shun away those who are on the older side of the fandom OR like to explore darker sides of the canon (and it has PLENTY of dark elements) start using this as an argument: this is a kids game, this isn’t for you, this is Disney and it’s made for kids, as if it’s a My Little Pony fandom situation. Not only it’s stupid and gatekeepy, but it also kind of… infantilises the game that is actually quite mature in its writing, even if it avoids some explicitly adult topics? I hope that makes sense.

I feel like I just used your ask to rant about something that’s been bothering me, I hope it’s okay Anon lol

But yeah, a TL;DR answer to your question would probably be even though there isn’t anything too shocking or explicit, I think the themes of the game are more suitable for teens than for pre-schoolers. Even W.I.T.C.H. was 11+ when I was reading it back in the day (shrug)

This is my “behind the scenes” series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics. Link to the fic itself above. Thoughts below the cut.

The title from this one comes from "Tightrope" from The Greatest Showman. Fun fact, before I was friends with @audreycritter, she did a fundraiser for a friend that included a fic component. I donated so I got to pick the prompt, and it was also this song, because it gives me BIGGGGG Dick & Bruce emotions, and that prompt became The Hand In My Hand.

Go listen to that song and think of these two. It's amazing.

Anyways. This fic was written for @husborth as a late birthday gift, if I remember correctly. I sussed out preferred characters and took it from there. Sickfics are always fun, but this ended up being a horrible prophecy of a fic, because I wrote it and then BOTH of us got sick, separately, in separate states. But did EITHER of us have a Bruce to lovingly tend to us? No.

This had happened before. He knew what was coming. He couldn’t stop it.

Poor Dick. I am very mean to him in this fic. (Not meaner than the original writers who made him watch his parents plummet to their deaths, but.) Thankfully I am not prone to nightmares, but I do get rerun dreams, and I am usually just as annoyed about it as you might suppose.

Dick’s ears filled with the roar of the crowd, the tumult pressing down on him like corpses, pinning him in place. 

"How many ways can I describe things in terms of death and dying before anyone actually dies?"

They were cheering, not screaming, urging the spangled bodies high above to climb higher, to step out onto the narrow platforms, to jump.

"How. Many. Ways."

He could feel the air, oppressively full and stifling, wrap over him like a soaked towel. He couldn’t move.

Can I just say. Getting trapped in blankets with a fever? Like physically getting an arm or leg wrapped in a twisted sheet or something? The worst. Just cut it off, I don't need it.

Dick collapsed forward, weeping and wheezing in equal measure. Strong arms caught him, lifting him back onto the bed before he could hit the floor.

Having Bruce catch him was so important, given the song. Also, it's just lovely to read, imo.

He didn’t want to dream again, didn’t want to get caught in that sickening loop that had played over and over and over, spurred on by the heat tearing through his head and prickling down his spine.

Poor Dick. When I have fever dreams, they're usually less of a dream and more having every moment of thought invaded by a line from a song. One time it was the theme song to Calamity Jane and it was the actual worst.

The arms moved, muscles hardening to shift Dick so his burning face rested against cool, soft fabric. A fridge-chilled washcloth wiped the tears from his cheek and the sweat from his brow. 

I used so many adjectives in this fic. It feels excessive. Me @ me were they on sale??? put some back!

“I want my mom.” Dick hiccuped and curled his limbs in tight, fists pressed to the bridge of his nose. He trembled in every muscle, in every tendon, in every centimeter of his marrow. He ached with fever and exhaustion and grief. He wanted his dad to cradle him like a baby. He wanted his mom to sing him to sleep. He wanted to remember what their faces looked like. “I want my mom.”

That was the line I was writing for, right there. Dick wishing his mom were alive to take care of him again. (It is usually what I whine when truly ill, even as a very grown adult.)

A throat ground down to gravel by years of wear hummed a lullaby, soft baritone to the tenor of his tears. . . .

“Bruce. Bruce.” “I’m still here, chum.”

Bruce 👏 is 👏 his 👏 children's 👏 bedrock 👏

“Father?” called someone quietly, voice high and young. “Will Richard be alright?”

I remain SO incredibly pleased with the reception to this line right here. When I started writing, I couldn't decide if I wanted to write about baby Dick or grown Dick... so I cheated. My highest hopes were just that readers wouldn't be too confused but instead the comments were shock and delight over what seemed to be taken as a mega-twist. I didn't expect that level of surprise, but I'm happy about it!

Bruce hummed an old tune, something low and swayed that made his chest rumble beneath Dick’s cheek like a monstrous cat’s purr.

And here I cram in two things that are important to me—Bruce singing to his kids and anyone fortunate enough to rest against him comparing him to a massive predator that is also remarkably comfy and soft.

And that was enough.

I could swear I've ended at least one other fic like this. Maybe more than one. Endings are hard.
