a little bit o’ spring anime season retrospective, a little late 👇

I’ve only watched 2.5 series involved in the Isekai Quartet but I was thirsty for Re: Zero content so I tuned in to this. I’mma be honest: this was fun. Crossovers are fun. I really enjoyed seeing funny skeleton man and Goddess of Dumbass interact, and I think equal time and attention was given to all parties involved, and that made it fun, too. It was accessible for someone like me whose knowledge of these shows was only tertiary and even if it had its questionable moments (Darkness I hate you so much), the sum is an enjoyable package. I question if this show could work with any other quartet of isekai heroes because all other isekai protagonists are boring af.

Watching Fruits Basket again makes me realize that I absorbed too much of Tohru Honda into my personality when I was impressionable and wee and never figured out that it was bad. Anyway this was a nice new coat of paint on a beloved series. The updated designs are nice to look at and the care given to the new material is evident. But it is considerably less…fun than the first incarnation and can I be honest? As a manga reader, knowing what I know about how the little love triangle pans out and watching it from the beginning? I just don’t like Kyo like I did when I was 12. Which, uh, wasn’t that much to begin with. Tohru deserves the world and the anime has a lot of work to do to convince me that Kyo can give that to her.

Fairy Gone takes its place alongside The Lost Village for being the biggest waste of time. In its favor: I liked the main character’s design and that she wore pants. Its sins: horrible clunky CGI I could not make out, way too many proper nouns, infodumps every episode, butt rock, a general disinterest in its main cast and their secrets. It expected me to care about a bunch of stuffy old men and their machinations when there were friends-to-enemies girlfriends in the background they weren’t even considering. I don’t remember who the assistant attorney general prime minister of Not-England is and I don’t care. The fact that this gets another 12 episodes is baffling, how anyone could anyone listen to another 12 episodes of dull political cud-chewing is beyond me.

Carole and Tuesday makes La La Land look like a plastic bag tumbling underneath a highway. Carole and Tuesday should win the Oscar for best everything. Carole and Tuesday is the best contemporary musical by a mile. Watanabe has been waiting 25 years just to make this show, and it’s a delightful cross section of everything that’s made his shows successful in the past—the slice of life futurepunk of Cowboy Bebop, the zaniness of Space Dandy, the ensemble cast of Samurai Champloo. It’s a pleasure to watch. I love seeing these girls underestimated and then blow everyone out of the water, it’s a consistent delight. The soundtrack is amazing and everything on it sounds genuine and legitimate—probably because it is. Netflix shouldn’t be keeping this one all to itself.  

Hitoribocchi was a sweet little gem of goodwill. Strange, anxious Bocchi’s quest to make friends with her equally strange classmates was funny, empathetic, and endearing. I love this cast of weirdo misfits and who among us doesn’t secretly hope their friends don’t forget about them when they’re sick oh thank goodness it’s not just me.

Senryuu Shoujo was a little cute, a little funny, a little heartwarming. It’s forgettable but a nice kind of forgettable, where you fondly remember it for five minutes and then move on with your life. It’s a short form series so if you’re in the mood for a quick n’ light shoujo about pining and misunderstanding, this is an easy recommendation.

I think I set my expectations too high for Sarazanmai. I wanted it to be the takedown of yaoi tropes like Yurikuma so gleefully pitchforked yuri tropes, but that wasn’t its project at all. It was Ikuhara’s most visceral work, but also, I feel, his most grounded in reality, which is a weird fucking thing to say about a show wherein three boys turn into kappas to go up the concept of someone’s butt. This was, decidedly, my least favorite Ikuhara title, which isn’t to say it’s bad. It’s just not Penguindrum or Yurikuma. Its scope felt smaller, its commentary less biting, its reveals less….revealing. Stand By Me is a bangin’ ED, though, I will Stand By That.

Kono Oto Tomare suffers from not knowing who its main character is. Surely it’s Megane Senpai, who starts the show off? But it’s not, it’s most assuredly Delinquent Guy, who is the emotional heart of the show and who definitely has something going on with our third main character, Prodigy Girl, leaving Megane Senpai the third wheel. This show just doesn’t start with its feet underneath it—it hobbles along an ungainly fusion of shoujo and sports anime and doesn’t do either tremendously. It does, however, have a heart, and this cast did eventually grow on me and I want to see them succeed. Protip: if your show is about an activity, please feature the activity. There is very little actual koto playing in this show and this is one of its biggest missteps. It’s a serviceable show, but not a great one.

I don’t drop a lot of anime but I dropped Cinderella Nine at episode 5 because it was just too ugly. It was so bad that I began to doubt there was an “on model”. There was just nothing going for it—the character designs were awful, the animation would pass as a power point, and the sportball was nonexistant. Non Non.

Dororo really let me down. I didn’t care for its ending at all, and in fact, sort of felt as if it nullified all the hard work of the prior 23 episodes. Having Dororo and Hyakkimaru part is a terrible decision. Nothing was learned. The payoff was not rewarding. Would have to point to Aldnoah to find an ending in recent memory I disliked more than this one. >:(/10

The show I was most hyped for every week was Demon Slayer. It didn’t start out swinging—Tanjiro’s origin story is unfortunately pretty par for the course in terms of shonen heroes, and the years-long training arc and time skip right after it was not the most inviting beginning. In fact, that’s where I dropped the manga when I tried reading it a couple of years ago. But ufotable makes this serviceable and by the fourth episode or so, I was completely sold. Something I loved about the manga was its unique artstyle and use of patterns and gradients—any other studio would have sacrificed both. Watching a fight scene in Demon Slayer is a joy. Characters ping pong around each other and footwork is fancy and weapons feel dangerous and the techniques look cool and require Tanjiro to puzzle them out. Also, Tanjiro is such a good boy. He drinks so much respect women juice. Every time an episode ends I’m disappointed I don’t have more to watch.

Today our HUGE Amiami box came and it’s two months of backed up YOI stuff (plus stuff from other series but this post is focusing on just YOI), so here is an absolutely massive loot post. I  think this literally almost doubled our YOI collection.

First off is the Chara-Forme Yuri on Ice Acrylic Strap Collection Vol.3 by Empty! These are all Kiss and Cry themed and in my opinion this is one of the cutest sets they’ve released. Look even Georgi is adorable lol. 

This is the Yuri!!! on Ice Rubber Strap Collection Pair by Movic. There’s actually one non-pair in there as you can see lol. Yes they did remember the ring on the Victuuri one, by the way. Recent merch has been getting better about this, thankfully. I really like this set a lot (especially the bottom two. IDEAL). The only thing I’m not a fan of is how the ‘transparent strap’ style of them washes out the color in their faces a bit so you can’t see their blushes from the original art! 

The  Chara-Forme Yuri on Ice Acrylic Strap Collection Vol.2 by Empty! These are all based on the ED theme. The Yuuri in this set is blessed by angels. I don’t make the rules. It’s just true. 

Yuri!!! on Ice Clear Rubber Strap by Sol International. These are really cute and creative and all the straps have different colored sparkly backgrounds!! The top three are obviously themed to go together (both Yuuri and Victor are singing omg), and Yuuri is talking to a tiny Phichit on the bottom one of him. Also Victor and Yuuri as JOINT HASETSU AMBASSADORS is the best thing I never knew I needed. 

Yuri!!! on Ice Choko Kawa Rubber Strap by Sega. I really like the art in this set. It’s really soft and the thick lines are nice!! Also the skating Yurio has a sweet expression, which is rare but good.

Yuri!!! on Ice YuraYura Keychain by Bushiroad. For some reason my photos of all of these turned out really poorly, so you get these photos where the ones I’m selling are cut off, which I guess doesn’t really matter. I wonder why they put Yuuri in that promo outfit he never wears in so much stuff. I mean it’s a nice outfit but. Anyway, I ended up really LOVING these. The colors are super bright and the art is adorable!! Also no photos but they’re just as detailed on the back (for example Yurio’s hair is braided in the back on the keychain). 

Yuri!!! on Ice Tojikore Acrylic Keychain Vol.2 by TwinCre. So these are actually keychains, but they came with plastic stands, so you can display them as acrylic stands as well which is the BEST IDEA EVER. I love this so much and I dearly hope more keychain sets do it because it is so clever and handy. @abarero figured out a really, really awesome way to display our excessive amounts of keychains, but even then, this is always going to be better to me than hanging up yet another set of keychains. ANYWAY, every single keychain in this set is a gift; from banquet dancing to katsudon pirozhki to just... all of them. It’s so good. Absolutely one of my top three faves released for the series so far.

The History Maker Yuuri and the ending theme sparkler Yuuri were ACTUALLY amiami exclusive bonuses that came with the Kiss and Cry keychains and the Ending Theme keychains, but since they packed them separately I forgot to include them in those pictures. Whoops. 

Anyway, the big chibi keychains of Victor, Yuuri, Yurio, JJ, and Otabek are by Avex and they’re chibi versions of the Comiket exclusive release keychains. JJ, Otabek, and Yurio belong to @pantacular. 

Charappuccino Phichit is by Birthday. I actually did have Victor and Yuuri ordered too, but they were a couple of the items that got canceled, and they were out of stock. I actually did manage to find them on another site and have reordered them, but they’re not here yet. This keychain is so precious. 

The Tsumamare Victor and Yuuri are the little keychains hanging by their shirts. They’re by Cospa. They’re so cute and expressive. Especially the Yuuri! 

Bocchi-kun are by ACG and they’re the little tiny pouty keychains. They’re super cute, but I admit I’m a little disappointed by how tiny they are. Though I’m familiar with the line, I’ve never ordered a Bocchi-kun before, so I was unaware of their size. I don’t regret ordering them, and I’d still have gotten them (it’s not like they were pricey), but yeah, small. 

That single Yuuri is a Jelly Charm by ACG. And lastly is the Oshikura Victor by Orange Rouge. This actually came out in January, but I missed ordering it. Victor and Yurio are relatively easy to find, but Yuuri seems to be sold out everywhere, so Victor is having to wait. I did find Yuuri somewhere, but he’s a bit overpriced. It’s not TOO bad though, so I’ll probably go ahead and bite the bullet and get him instead of having to resort to bidding on auctions.

In front, Love&Life and On Ice Victor and Yuuri cellphone stands from Atelier Magi because they’re great. Behind that, Cospa’s Vkusno! rice bowl. Next to that, Gyugyutto cushion straps of Victor and Yuuri by Bell House (Victor gets katsudon but poor Yuuri doesn’t lol). Behind them, Victor and Yuuri mugs by Gift. And inside the mugs, Victor and Yuuri Nitotan plush by Takara Tomy ARTs (which are super cute and nicely detailed).

The Playful Mind (that’s the brand) collaboration stuff was cute as shit so I picked up some stuff from it. Good stuff, high quality, adorable art. 

There’s two (faux) leather trays, a coin purse, a phone case, and two cord holders. 

Above that is two pass cases of Victor and Yuuri being dapper in suits by A3! There were keychains released by Animega with this art, but they are near IMPOSSIBLE to get, and I’m resigned to the fact that it will never happen, so when I saw these pass cases, I decided to snag them instead. You can use them as keychains, so they essentially serve the same purpose.  

There’s Victor and Yuuri hair clips by Emu, which I’ll actually probably sell because they are big! I thought they’d be little ones judging by the price, but they’re big and I have short hair, so we’ll see about that. Above that is three sets of can badges, all by Movic. Then there’s the super cute 2016-2017 School Calendar, which I’m so pleased stands up on its own. 

Down below is three pens. Two of them are those kitschy ‘floaty’ ones where a figure floats down the pen, in this case it’s Victor and Yuuri ‘skating down’ a rink in the pen. They’re cute. The other one is a really cool, elegant pen themed after Yuuri’s FS outfit.

Then! The Victor and Yuuri pillowcases by M's. Extremely soft fabric!! Would recommend for resting head upon. The picture is kind of a bad angle and frankly they BOTH look weird in this photo because of it but... I think, upon seeing it in person, the complaints about Victor’s face are very unwarranted. He actually looks really good and sweet and gentle in person and very much like Victor? The problem is parts of the rest of his body, where the anatomy is wonk (but this is just the pillow, so it’s only shoulders up and you don’t get that). And Yuuri looks great of course.

Konosuba Episode 2 Notes

“-suke” is a common ending for male names (human and sometimes pets). “Chomu” is the weird sounding bit typical of Crimson Demon names, and doesn’t (necessarily?) mean anything itself.

Apparently Chomusuke being female wasn’t revealed in the LNs until much later on, but I don’t think it much matters beyond the “what, I thought she was male this whole time!” joke from the -suke part of the name. Don’t quote me on this though.

The word translated as “children” here is “o-ko-sama.” The usual word for “child/children” is kodomo, which is what Megumin uses when saying “don’t treat me like a kid!” or whatever. O-ko-sama adds the “honorable ‘o’” prefix and the -sama suffix to the base word “ko” to make an especially polite way of referring to other people’s children; one of the most common situations you’ll see it is on restaurant menus, where it’s the word used instead of “kid” in “kid’s menu” or “kid’s meal.”

It’s also used sarcastically, like here, to refer to someone with a young/innocent/naive view of whatever. In media especially it’s common when poking fun at young characters who hate being treated like a kid.

The “honorable ‘o’” (which can also be ‘go’, it depends on the word you’re attaching it to) is something you stick onto words to kick up the politeness level and/or when speaking in ‘feminine’ language (Japanese is a very gendered language in terms of ‘men talk like this’ and ‘women talk like this’). However, it too is also sometimes used sarcastically or jokingly, or to soften the tone of something. For example “obaka” is kind of like a cuter way of calling somebody a baka (not to be confused with “oobaka,” which means like big idiot).

One of the most common words for “balls” (like, those balls, yes) in Japanese is “kintama,” which translates literally to “gold ball(s)”. So yeah this is a much more obvious balls joke than you might expect.

The phrase she uses here is “charm point,” which is a Japan-original phrase using English words. It’s used to describe specific bits of something that are particularly cute/appealing, either naturally or by design. In this case she’s referring to that hair loop of hers. If you asked a...less scrupulous Japanese Konosuba fan what Aqua’s “charm point” is, they’d probably bring up the “is apparently going commando” thing. A more wholesome example would be Pikachu’s tail and how it’s shaped like a little lightning bolt.

The “Aqua is apparently going commando” is also a reference to a Japanese meme, “haitenai” (lit. “not wearing [panties]”), referring to when characters would be drawn in ways where it looked like they weren’t wearing underwear but you couldn’t tell for sure.

This is a reference to a real-world scam that has plagued Japan for decades. Basically someone will call up random phone numbers, saying “It’s me, it’s me!” and hoping whoever answered the phone will be like “oh it’s my son, what’s wrong?” From there they convince the (usually quite elderly) target that the caller, posing as their child, has gotten in trouble somehow (lost a briefcase of cash for work, etc.) and urgently needs to borrow some money. It’s very easy to do account-to-account bank transfers in the Japanese banking system, so they can just give the old person a few details over the phone and have them send money that way.

That may sound kind of absurd, but it’s been a relatively big problem for a long time; there are still police-run awareness campaigns about it even today, and when sending money through an ATM (the most common method), there’s a warning message you have to go through about this and similar scams.

“Yunyun” sounds strikingly similarly to “tayun tayun,” a common sound effect for...bouncing/swaying breasts. (It’s not a coincidence, no.)

This is a Japanese meme, “ku-koro.” It’s short for “Ku, korose!” which (in context) basically means “Urgh, just kill me!” The original context is that it’s the stereotypical thing for proud female knight characters to say when captured by orcs and about to be subject to certain heinous deeds. Though it started as a porn thing, it’s gotten more mainstream exposure as a gag line in stuff like Konosuba (seen here), Puzzles and Dragons, and various other (non-porn) fantasy series.

There’s a NicoDictionary entry for the phrase that lists it as first gaining steam after trending on Twitter in early 2013.

He uses the phrase “oyakusoku” here, which is a specific technique that is popular in Japanese comedy. It’s the word for “promise (yakusoku)” plus the same “honorable ‘o’” mentioned above. It basically is the same concept as a running gag, except on a much larger scale; instead of being a gag that runs throughout an episode or series, it runs through entire genres or even across multiple genres.

It generally takes the form of “in X situation, Y happens.” One of the most infamous of them in anime is the “guy walks into a room→girl is in the middle of changing clothes in the room→ girl inflicts violence on the guy.”

In a lot of ways it is similar to “cliché” in English, except it’s a bit broader in scope and doesn’t have the negative connotation that calling something cliche generally does; the fact that everyone knows it’s coming is what gives it its value, to some extent. When applied to online communities it’s basically “meme” though.

The phrase he uses here is actually used to refer to someone who is dependable and decisive when it counts, so given what he’s saying he’s willing to do here, it’s understandable Megumin’s reaction is “I don’t think you’re really using that phrase right…”

The normal version of the phrase for “I’m back” is “tadaima,” but Aqua is saying “tadama” instead, which is a silly-sounding way of saying it you don’t generally see outside the internet.

The normal response to “tadaima” is some variant on “okaeri,” and in the second shot she’s saying “where’s my okaeri???” It’s supposed to be adorable in that Aqua sort of way, though I’m not sure it quite comes across the same in the translation.

The “Loli-maniac” here is actually “Lolima,” a (blunt) play on his name, Kazuma. Adding “-ma” to the end of a word can also be a way of indicating “a criminal related to whatever the -ma is attached to.” One example is “toori-ma,” which is a word for someone who causes harm to random people on the street (basically like a serial killer). Toori is from the verb tooru, which means to pass by something (among other things; it’s a very versatile verb). Another is the word for pyromaniac/arsonist, houka-ma, where houka means to set something on fire (in an arson-y kind of way).

The word shes uses here is “bocchi,” which is a term that comes from “hitori-bocchi,” meaning “all alone.” Bocchi itself is slang that’s caught on a lot in recent years, especially in nerdy communities, and basically means “a person with no friends.” It’s a phrase you’ll see pop up a lot in manga and anime.

These resemble large konpeito, popular star-burst shaped candies. I can’t say for sure how intentional it is, but I know my reaction was “lol the first thing she reached for was candy.”

A more direct translation of this item’s name is “the crystal that improves your relationship.” The subs seem to imply Yunyun is talking about it like she could use it to make other friends, but in the Japanese she’s more saying “so this will make me and Megumin get closer?” Likewise, the subs line for Megumin implies she doesn’t care about making friends in general, while the Japanese is more “I see no reason to get along better with Yunyun.”

The opening line of the letter in the Japanese implies more “I haven’t been able to send reports lately/until now,” which I’m guessing is a reference to the gap between S1 and S2.

The phrase translated as “side jobs” here is “naishoku,” which is a type of job that you do from home. Typically it referred to jobs like mentioned here, folding fake flower or boxes: a company will deliver unfolded ones to your house, you fold them, then they pick them back up and pay you for however many were folded. The fake flowers one in particular is something that gets used in a lot of anime/manga as something super poor households do to earn money for food or whatever. In real life, it’s traditionally work that housewives would do if they had free time/needed to help supplement the family income.

Nowadays it can refer to various other types of work-from-home jobs, though with the nuance of it not being a “real”/full-time job, even if you can/could make enough money to live on with it (e.g. streaming/blogging).
