Who’s No. 1 in the 2020 NBA Draft?

The race for the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft remains wide open we head into the new year. Each of the projected top prospects have failed to separate themselves from their peers in what’s shaping up to be one of the weakest classes in years. While there aren’t a lot of safe bets projected to go in the top-10, the draft is still full of intriguing young players who could turn into franchise cornerstones with the right development.

The last draft that felt this weak at the top was 2013, when Anthony Bennett went No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers. While that draft class was full of disappointments, it did feature the best prospect of the decade at No. 15 overall in Giannis Antetokounmpo. After a slow start to his career, Victor Oladipo looks like a worthy pick at No. 2 overall now.

Every draft is full of contributors, even ones that look underwhelming on the outside. This is our projection of the 2020 NBA Draft class at the moment, with less emphasis on team fit and more importance on sorting by the best players available.

1. Atlanta Hawks - Anthony Edwards, SG, Georgia

Edwards’ first 13 games with Georgia have been peppered with fleeting moments of greatness along with maddening bouts of inconsistency. Never was this more apparent than at the Maui Invitational, when Edwards put up a clunker in the opener against Dayton (six points on 2-of-10 shooting) and struggled in the first half the following day against Michigan State, before a second-half explosion that put his star potential on full display. As Edwards finished with 34 second-half points against the Spartans, he showcased his improvements as an outside shooter (7-of-16 from three) and his playmaking defensive ability.

Such pronounced peaks and valleys shouldn’t be particularly surprising for one of the youngest and most talented players in this draft class. Edwards — who doesn’t turn 19 until Aug. 5 — has put up solid, but unspectacular, numbers thus far, with 18.8 points per game, 41.4/31.9/74.6 shooting splits, and encouraging steal (2.8) and block (1.5) rates. His tendency to settle for his jumper and a lack of focus on defense are major issues worth monitoring. That he’s become the top prospect in this class says more about lack of No. 1 overall contenders than it says about his season with the Bulldogs.

2. Golden State Warriors - LaMelo Ball, G, Illawarra Hawks

Ball doubled-down on the strengths and weaknesses in his scouting report during 13 games in the Australian league before his season was interrupted by a foot injury. He remains a brilliant passer off either hand, able to see the floor and read the opposing defense with the vision of a 10-year veteran, not an 18-year-old. He remains a major work in progress as a scorer. His paltry 47.9 true shooting percentage is a byproduct of his struggles finishing at the rim, inconsistency getting to the foul line, and Steph Curry-like shot selection without Steph Curry-like shot-making on deep three pointers. His defense can be an eyesore, with the occasional successful gamble not making up for all the ball watching and blow-bys.

Ultimately, Ball is a flawed but very good prospect because of his youth, his size (6’6, at least), and his elite skill as a facilitator. Rajon Rondo has been mentioned as a possible comparison, but Ball will draw more respect as a shooter. If he can make incremental improvements to his weaknesses along the way, he will end up as a high-impact guard.

3. New York Knicks - Killian Hayes, G, Ratiopharm Ulm

Hayes has been a long-time staple on France’s successful youth teams before moving to play in the top German league this season at 18 years old. The 6’5 guard is a big ball handler with tough shot-making ability, impressive passing craft on the move, and the size to play either backcourt spot. What he lacks in high-end athleticism and burst towards the rim he’s able to make up for with rare touch on floaters in the paint and the threat of his pull-up shooting. Through his first 25 games with Ratiopharm Ulm, he has 59 percent true shooting, a 41 percent assist rate, and a nearly three percent steal rate.

Hayes’ athletic shortcomings will come under the microscope in pre-draft workouts, but during a year when many of the top prospects are failing to produce at above-average efficiency, the young French guard is doing it. Factor in his size and his youth, and there’s a lot to like about his projection to the NBA.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers - Isaac Okoro, F, Auburn

To have Okoro as a top-10 pick is to believe he can be a special perimeter defender while his offense continues to develop. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl called Okoro the best defender he’s ever coached before he played his first game. That talent has been on display throughout the start to his college career even if it isn’t showing up yet in his steal rate. A long and strong 6’6 wing, Okoro can defend both on- and off-the-ball because of his impressive reaction time, ability to hold his own in the paint, and versatility to switch onto any position.

Okoro has not yet proven himself to be a dependable scorer, though he has a solid foundation of skills to build on. He’s a smart and willing passer who rarely takes a bad shot. He’s hit 66 percent of his two-point field goals so far. Teams will worry about his low free throw and three-point percentages, but those skills can be learned. His defensive toughness and versatility can’t be. There’s also this: Okoro literally did not lose a basketball game in 2019.

5. Washington Wizards - Nico Mannion, PG, Arizona

Mannion ended his high school career with a stellar performance at the Nike Hoop Summit and has continued his positive draft momentum during a productive freshman season at Arizona. A 6’3 point guard, Mannion is the best passer in the class behind LaMelo Ball, showing the ability to throw soft lobs to big men for alley-oops, zip passes to the corner for threes, and use the threat of his scoring to set up teammates for easy baskets. While his three-point shooting (35 percent on 63 attempts) has been good but not great, this is a prospect with fantastic touch from all over the court. He’s currently making 84 percent of his free throws and grades out in the 68th percentile in floaters, per Synergy Sports. On the season, he’s at 55 percent true shooting with a 35.4 percent assist rate.

Mannion will likely struggle to finish at the rim against NBA length and doesn’t have the elite explosiveness teams ideally want out of a lead guard. While it may hold him back for competing for the No. 1 pick, he’s simply too good of a passer and shooter to fall out of the top-10.

6. Chicago Bulls - Tyrese Maxey, G, Kentucky

Maxey has often found himself in an awkward spot within John Calipari’s lineups featuring three point guards at Kentucky. Playing alongside Ashton Hagans and Immanuel Quickley has pushed Maxey to an off-ball role, where he’s been used to dart around screens and attack closeouts. While it might not be his ideal role in the pros, Maxey has performed well on the biggest stages, hanging 26 points against Michigan State (on 7-of-12 shooting) and 27 points against Louisville (on 9-of-12 shooting). He has shown a consistent ability to get to the free-throw line and projects as a better shooter than his current three-point percentage (27.6 percent) suggests.

Maxey excels going to the rim on offense and gets after it defensively. He doesn’t have great size (expected to measure between 6’2 and 6’3) and isn’t the flashiest pick, but he’s the rare lottery prospect in this draft without large, apparent holes in his skill set. If Kentucky is going to develop into a national title contender as the season goes on, it’s up to Maxey to take charge and become the team’s best player.

7. New Orleans Pelicans - Deni Avdija, F, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv

Avdija is a 6’9 forward who put himself on NBA radars with a track record of strong play for Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv and for Israel at the U20 European Championships. Playing in Euroleague this season, Avdija — who just turned 19 years old — is having an inconsistent campaign with some intriguing flashes of what he could one day become. Passing and ball handling are Avdija’s best skills. He loves handling the ball and making plays in the open court, which helped him average 5.3 assists per game during his MVP run at the U20 Championships.

Shooting is Avdija’s swing skill after making only 28.6 percent of his threes and 60 percent of his free throws in the U20 Championships. Teams will hope his shot comes along and he can develop into a dribble/pass/shoot forward with great size who can fit into any lineup.

8. Detroit Pistons - Cole Anthony, PG, North Carolina

Anthony was supposed to be college basketball’s most impactful and productive freshman, but his first nine games at North Carolina were full of inconsistency before undergoing knee surgery for a torn meniscus. At his best, Anthony is a dynamic pull-up shooter and gifted lead ball handler in the pick-and-roll. This was on display vs. Notre Dame in the season opener when he exploded for 36 points. Scouts had concerns about his scoring efficiency and his tendency to look for his own offense instead of getting his teammates involved coming into college, and both bubbled to the surface with the Tar Heels. He was shooting only 36.8 percent from the field at the time of his injury, struggling to score in transition and finishing with more turnovers (34) than assists (32).

The athleticism Anthony showed in dunk contests didn’t always translate functionally and his shooting ability at the high school level didn’t consistently follow him to college. Some of that is variance, but it’s also worrisome for a player who is a full year older than most freshmen (and older than both Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett, who were freshmen last year). Anthony’s game still feels suited for the NBA, but his relative struggles at North Carolina mean he isn’t the slam dunk pick he once looked like.

9. Charlotte Hornets - Onyeka Okongwu, C, USC

Okongwu has been the most productive freshman in the country. At 6’9, 245 pounds, the USC center has been a monster finisher (80 percent shooting at the rim), impressive shot blocker (10.7 percent block rate), and capable offensive rebounder. He’s No. 5 in the country in PER and No. 7 in box score plus-minus. Long, strong, and blessed with great body control, Okongwu feels like a sure thing to be a contributor in the pros in a draft without many safe bets.

10. Phoenix Suns - Tyrese Haliburton, PG, Iowa State

Haliburton went from under-the-radar recruit to an advanced stats wunderkind as a freshman at Iowa State in a relatively limited role. He’s continuing his evolution by turning into a bonafide lottery pick as a sophomore. Even as his usage rate has tripled, Haliburton remains one of the country’s most efficient players, posting 64 percent true shooting, a nearly 40 percent assist rate, and a four percent steal rate.

At 6’5, Haliburton has great instincts as a passer and defensive playmaker. He’s a tremendous spot-up shooter as well, hitting 42.5 percent of his threes. At the same time, Haliburton isn’t the most fluid athlete or powerful finisher, and struggles to shoot off the dribble. He’s one of the most unique NBA prospects to hit college basketball over the last few seasons, but in a down year for talent, his defined strengths are worth taking a chance on.

11. Minnesota Timberwolves - RJ Hampton, G, New Zealand Breakers

Hampton was a top American prospect out of Texas who spurned the heavyweights in college basketball to turn pro in Australia. While he’s battled a hip injury recently, he’s mostly acquitted himself well in 15 games in the NBL. An athletic 6’5 guard, Hampton has a well-rounded skill set without a signature niche. He’s shown an ability to attack the rim off the dribble and generate power going to the hoop on offense, and has done a good job of getting into passing lanes and applying ball pressure on defense. His shooting and offensive feel remain question marks.

12. Sacramento Kings - James Wiseman, C, Memphis

Wiseman was considered the No. 1 player in his recruiting class as a 7’1, 240-pound center with a 7’6 wingspan, wide shoulders, and cut frame. While he certainly looks like everything the NBA would want in a big man, Wiseman’s numbers have always been a bit underwhelming. He didn’t even make one of three All-EYBL teams as a rising senior on the Nike grassroots circuit. His play in three games at Memphis didn’t provide enough answers before he left the program to prepare for the draft amid an NCAA suspension. Wiseman may go much higher than this based on his pedigree, but there are reasons to be skeptical of his stock as a pro prospect, namely: his underwhelming ability to quickly get off the ground, his unpolished defensive traits, and his lack of overall offensive skill.

13. Portland Trail Blazers - Obi Toppin, F, Dayton

Toppin has been the biggest revelation of this college basketball season. An explosive 6’9 forward who dunks everything, Toppin has been a great finisher (68 percent true shooting), dependable rebounder, and has shown satisfactory defensive instincts. He’s also made big strides as an outside shooter, hitting 36 percent of his first 39 attempts from three-point range. A redshirt sophomore, Toppin will be one of the oldest players drafted in the lottery as someone who turns 22 in March.

14. Boston Celtics - Jahmi’us Ramsey, G, Texas Tech

Ramsey has missed time this season with a hamstring injury, but the Texas Tech freshman has been a walking bucket when he’s taken the court. Ramsey, an athletic 6’4 shooting guard, is averaging 17.7 points per game on 61 percent true shooting thanks to a smooth jumper and deep range. Ramsey already looks natural flowing into his pull-ups, which has helped him hit better than 48 percent of his threes on 5.3 attempts per game. He could be a draft riser as the season continues.

15. Atlanta Hawks - Jaden McDaniels, F, Washington

Think of McDaniels as Brandon Ingram-lite. A skinny 6’9 forward, McDaniels was a late bloomer who rose up his high school class rankings because of his length and shot-making potential. He has looked great when his jumper is falling at Washington, but his off nights have also exposed the holes in his game. McDaniels consistently gets knocked off his spots because of a lack of strength, and still struggles to think the game on both ends of the floor. He’s worth a gamble if he can rapidly improve on shooting ability that has run hot-and-cold (36 percent from three, 72 percent on foul shots) so far.

16. San Antonio Spurs - Theo Maledon, G, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne

Maledon has become a part-time starter in Euroleague at 18 years old as a 6’4 point guard who lacks elite quickness but brings spot-up shooting, an impressive feel for the game, and the length to provide ball pressure defensively. Maledon has struggled to score efficiency throughout his season with ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne (49 percent true shooting) and has had turnover issues, but he’s already comfortable running a pick-and-roll and has been a positive contributor at a young age in one of the better leagues in the world. He and Hayes thrived together in FIBA youth play for France before getting their professional careers.

17. Orlando Magic - Aleksej Pokusevski, C/F, Olympiacos

Pokusevski is a 7’, 200-pound center playing in the Greek second division and showcasing one of the most intriguing skill sets in this class. He has a rare ability to flow into pull-up jumpers for his size and age, and has shown shooting potential on both threes and free throws throughout his career. He’s also shown an ability to rack up blocks and steals on defense even if he badly needs to add strength. For more on Pokusevski, read Ignacio Rissotto.

18. Oklahoma City Thunder - Josh Green, wing, Arizona

The freshman forward from Australia has been an impressive on-ball defender and capable attacker off straight line drives at Arizona. While his scoring efficiency (53.8 percent true shooting) and three-point stroke (31.7 percent) need work, he has a big 3.1 percent steal rate and has made 79 percent of his free throws. A team will hope he can develop into legitimate 3-and-D wing down the line.

19. Milwaukee Bucks - Paul Reed, C, DePaul

Reed is one of the best developmental stories in college basketball, using his three seasons at DePaul to go from a three-star recruit way off NBA radars to a legitimate first-round pick. At 6’9, 220 pound, Reed has been one of the most productive big men in America, averaging 16.1 points per game while posting gigantic block (11 percent) and steal (3.3 percent) rates defensively. Reed has the quickness to be a switchable defender and also has some shooting potential, hitting 84.6 percent of his free throws and 8-of-30 three-pointers this season despite an odd release. Teams will want to see him add strength and prove his active rebounding and defense can hold up against bigger professionals.

20. Dallas Mavericks - Aaron Nesmith, wing, Vanderbilt

Nesmith has had a breakout sophomore season at Vanderbilt as a 6’6 wing who can fill it up from deep. Arguably the best perimeter shooter in the class, Nesmith has hit 52.2 percent of his threes this season and 82.5 percent of his free throws. Teams will wonder if he can hold up defensively, but his block and steal rates indicate he does add some value on that end.

21. Brooklyn Nets - Devon Dotson, G, Kansas

Dotson has been one of the best players in college basketball this season as a sophomore at Kansas. A strong and speedy 6’2 point guard, Dotson has a well-rounded skill set and gets after it defensively. While his three-point percentage (30.2 percent) is lower than scouts would like, he’s an 80 percent free throw shooter and has shown improved ability to facilitate this year. He’s also one of the nation’s leaders in steal rate at 4.1 percent.

22. Toronto Raptors - Amar Sylla, C, Oostende

A 6’9 forward with measurements similar to Pascal Siakam, Sylla is intriguing for his rare agility and defensive upside. While he remains a major work in progress on the offensive end, there aren’t many 18-year-olds with this type of size who can switch screens and rotate as effortlessly as he can.

23. Utah Jazz - Tre Jones, PG, Duke

Jones is a bulldog defensive point guard who made the surprising decision to return for his sophomore year at Duke. After being the fourth or fifth option on Duke’s Zion Williamson-led superteam last year, Jones has morphed into the Blue Devils’ best option on the perimeter this season, averaging 14.2 points and 7.2 assists per game while also posting an impressive 3.4 steal rate. His jump shot — up to 31.8 percent from three-point range on just under four attempts per game — is his biggest question mark.

24. Los Angeles Clippers - Isaiah Stewart, C, Washington

Stewart has been a monster inside scorer and rebounder from day one at Washington, just as he was promised to be as a top-five overall recruit out of high school. Through his first 15 games, Stewart is averaging 19.5 points and 9.1 rebounds while shooting 59.7 percent from the floor. Stewart has long arms and impossible strength for a 19-year-old, but scouts will worry about his lack of polished offensive skill as a shooter and passer, and his struggles to defend in space.

25. Houston Rockets - Zeke Nnaji, C, Arizona

Nnaji is the third Arizona freshman on this list. A 6’11, 240-pound big man, Nnaji is one of the most efficient scorers in the country with 72.9 percent true shooting on the season. He does almost all of his damage around the rim, usually off feeds from Mannion. While Nnaji is an 80 percent free-throw shooter, he’s still uncomfortable stretching the floor from three-point range, as he’s only 1-for-7 on the season from deep. Nnaji also has issues defending in space.

26. Oklahoma City Thunder - Devin Vassell, wing, Florida State

Vassell is developing into a certified 3-and-D prospect during his second season at Florida State. The 6’6 sophomore wing is a 39.8 percent three-point shooter and has posted impressive block (5.6 percent) and steal (3.5 percent) rates this season. Vassell also rarely turns the ball over and has been excellent in limited opportunities running the pick-and-roll as a ball handler (94th percentile) this season. Teams will want to see him do more off the dribble and improve as a finisher and passer.

27. Boston Celtics - Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, F, Villanova

How does Robinson-Earl fit into the NBA? A 6’9, 230-pound forward, the Villanova freshman lacks the explosive leaping ability, length, and rim protection mastery to play the five and doesn’t have ideal three-point shooting (28 percent from three) to play the modern power forward. Regardless, JRE is a good bet to find a way to carve out a career because he’s simply always found a way to be productive. A good rebounder with a well-rounded skill set across the board, Robinson-Earl’s 84.2 percent mark from the free-throw line hints that he may have more shooting potential than he’s shown thus far.

28. Miami Heat - Patrick Williams, wing, Florida State

Williams is coming off the bench as a freshman for the Seminoles, but has impressed when he’s had the opportunity as a big wing who scores efficiently in the half court and has potential as a shooter. At 6’8, 225 pounds with a 6’11 wingspan, Williams has been an 86 percent foul shooter despite only making 31 percent of his threes. His block and steal rates are impressive on defense, and he’s scoring in the 81st percentile in the half court so far.

29. Los Angeles Lakers - Scottie Lewis, wing, Florida

Florida’s freshman wing is an elite athlete in every sense. Blessed with incredible speed and rare leaping ability, Lewis has shown his playmaking defensive potential all year with a 5.9 block rate and three percent steal rate. He remains a huge work in progress on the offensive end, struggling to make decisions with the ball and score efficiently (51.1 percent true shooting) in the half court.

30. Boston Celtics - Jordan Nwora, F, Louisville

Nwora has become one of the very best players in college basketball as a junior at Louisville. A 6’7, 225-pound wing, Nwora has hit 43.7 percent of his first 87 attempts from deep. Teams will wonder if he can hold up on the defensive end, but his combination of size, shooting ability, and productivity at the college level should make him a first-rounder.

CELTICS, BUCKS GO AT IT

               The Boston Celtics were the first team to advance to the second round in this year’s NBA playoffs, as we would have predicted though not necessarily in terms of order, and they’re facing off for the second straight year against the Milwaukee Bucks, who followed suit with a four-game sweep of the Detroit Pistons after the Celts have disposed of the Indiana Pacers in similar fashion.  

               So who will win this matchup this time?  Last year, the Celtics beat the Bucks in a seven-game barnburner in the first round before overcoming Philadelphia to make it to the Eastern Conference finals for the second straight year against LeBron James and Cleveland, and coming within a quarter of making it to the NBA finals. And they did it without injured stars Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward for the entire playoffs.

               This time, however, they’ll face a much-improved Milwaukee team that has seen top star Giannis Antetokounmpo metamorphose into a legitimate MVP candidate and guys like Brook Lopez, Nikola Mirotic and George Hill come on board to give Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe and Malcolm Brogdon additional support.

               Just how different are these Bucks and Celtics from the teams that faced off in last year’s playoffs?

               First of all, the 6-foot-11, 242-pound Antetokounmpo, who averaged 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks for the Bucks in the regular season, has become a legitimate franchise star who can carry a team by himself.  Former Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer, who led the Hawks to the only 60-win season in their history in 2015, has also taken over the Milwaukee reins to manage a more talented roster that posted the best record in the league this year at 60-22.  All these have made the Bucks the favorites among both the Las Vegas bookmakers and so-called experts dissecting this series with the Celtics.

               On the other hand, what probably just goes against this Celtics squad that was the top preseason favorite to come out of the East now that LeBron James has moved to the West, among other things, is its up-and-down play in the regular season, which has cast doubts about its ability to go far this postseason despite the return of Irving and Hayward to a well-balanced cast of young and veteran talent that includes Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, Aron Baynes and Marcus Morris.

               In their four-game sweep of the Pacers, the Celtics showed that they may be regaining the mojo that they had in reaching last year’s conference finals.  But they’ll try to get past Milwaukee without their top defender, Smart, who tore his left oblique before the regular season ended and is not expected to return, if at all, in the playoffs until the conference finals. While Brogdon himself is coming off a plantar fascia tear and has not played since March 15, it’s more likely that he could rejoin the Bucks before the series is over, which would make Milwaukee even tougher to beat.

               But any design to beat the Bucks has to start with Antetokounmpo, the Greek Freak who has become one of the game’s major forces. The task of trying to limit the six-year forward will fall mostly on the shoulders of Al Horford, who will try to draw the Bucks’ top star out to the perimeter in such a matchup while also trying to limit his touches in the paint as it’s where the Bucks draw their strength on the offensive end, ranking second in the league in percentage of shots taken there.  Marcus Morris and Semi Ojeleye will also take their turn against Antetokounmpo, who has averaged 26.3 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists thus far in these playoffs.

               The Celtics will have to control the pace and turn the game into a grind the way they did against Indiana if only to control Giannis and the Bucks’ transition game.  They’ll also have to make sure that they get enough shots inside by driving more and getting into the free-throw line more often.  During the regular season, Boston ranked dead-last in the league with just 21.5 free-throw attempts per game.  That has to change against this Bucks team, which beat them twice in three regular-season games although the Celtics were not at full strength in two of those contests.

               The Celtics’ own fortunes will rest on Irving, who has so far proven to be the franchise star that he aspired to be when he asked for that trade from Cleveland two years ago to get free from the shadows of James.  Although he has not shot that well yet (42.7 percent field goal percentage), the 6-foot-3 six-time All-Star has averaged team highs of 22.5 points and 7.8 assists as he led Boston to that Indiana sweep.  Tatum (19.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg in these playoffs), Hayward (12.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg), Horford (11.0 ppg, 10.3 rpg), Brown (11.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg), and Morris (12.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg) will have to provide consistent support for Irving to become even more dangerous.

               The key here, however, is how both benches are going to produce.  With Brogdon out, Bledsoe (19.3 ppg, 5.3 apg), Middleton (19.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Lopez (12.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg) have been doing the heavy lifting for Milwaukee behind Antetokounmpo, and guys like Mirotic, Pat Connaughton, George Hill and Sterling Brown, who has been elevated as a starter in lieu of Brogdon, will have to produce to offset the Celtics’ bench that can go 10-deep even without Smart.

               In the end, Boston coach Brad Stevens has his work cut out for him.  For the first time since he came in to replace Doc Rivers on the Celtic bench in 2013, Stevens failed to improve the previous season’s record.  It’s now going to be a proving ground for him to try to steer the Celtics farther into the playoffs without the homecourt advantage in any of the remaining series, assuming no lower-placed team in the West matches up with his team in the event Boston makes it to the finals for the first time with him at the helm.

               At any rate, we’ll go out on a limb here and pick the Celtics to edge the Bucks in seven games to make it to the conference finals for the third straight year.  And don’t call us until it’s over.

               SHORTSHOTS: In the other Eastern series, No. 2 Toronto goes up against No. 3 Philadelphia, as expected, and this figures to be another humdinger of a matchup. Make ours the Raptors in seven, with all due respect to Joel Embiid and the East’s version of an All-Star lineup a la Golden State… Out West, no semifinal matchup has yet been set after the LA Clippers scored a huge upset over the Warriors 129-121 to send their series back to LA.  The Denver-San Antonio series has yet to also be decided and could go seven games. Waiting in the wings are Houston, which eliminated Utah in five games, and Portland, which ousted Oklahoma City also in five with that spectacular 37-foot buzzer-beater by Damian Lillard that was heard around the world… Back home, our favorite team Magnolia goes for the clincher tonight against Rain or Shine in the Philippine Cup semifinals after four-time defending champion San Miguel Beer closed out Phoenix in five games in the other semifinal matchup.  As usual, a watch on Paul Lee, the Hotshots’ perceived top gun, will be made to ascertain the Hotshots’ fortunes.  Lee went scoreless in Magnolia’s 82-74 victory last Wednesday that gave the Hotshots a 3-2 series lead.  It has to be made clear here, however, that Magnolia is not all Lee as long as the Hotshots’ other backcourt guys - Mark Barroca, Jio Jalalon, Justin Melton and Robbie Herndon - produce their own numbers, underscoring the Hotshots’ edge against the Elasto Painters at this spot.

Here Are The NBA Storylines You Should Be Following

Thursday night marks the return of NBA hoops, with teams entering the homestretch of their season. A few are fighting for their playoff lives, while others will try to avoid a late-season collapse. And for a handful of others, just playing basketball again figures to be a good thing, if only to shift the conversation from off-court turmoil that could bubble over.

With that in mind, we analyzed five of the league’s most interesting storylines as we prepare to dive into season’s second half.

What’s going to happen with the Celtics?

Even after the Raptors got Kawhi Leonard and the Sixers got Jimmy Butler, the Celtics carried great expectations this season. As a club that made it to Game 7 of the conference finals without Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, getting back at least to that stage with both of them healthy seemed like almost a given.

Fast-forward to now, though, and it’s clear that there’s no guarantee they’ll get that far. The Bucks have joined the league’s elite. The Sixers have gone all in. And the Raptors are solid on both ends.

Complicating matters, too, is the fact that Irving, a free-agent-to-be, is no longer willing to commit long-term to the idea of being a Celtic — a situation that has reporters and fans alike parsing his every word in interviews. (Irving’s exit would make it more difficult for the team to entice star big man Anthony Davis into staying in Boston for the long haul if the Celtics rolled the dice and traded for him.)

No, Jaylen Brown hasn’t been as impressive as he was in his second year. And Al Horford, a defensive stalwart in years past, hasn’t been as consistently good on that end this season.

Still, Hayward, whose mental blocks this season had left him struggling to look like himself, has shown positive signs as of late.22 And more importantly, the Celtics — for all their early season struggles — remain in the top 10 in both offense and defense, which generally signifies a true contender.

Whether they can make good on that level of promise is key because of how drastically their roster could change this summer, for better or worse.

Can the Bulls’ rebuild be a blueprint for a team like the Hawks?

It’s been far from a stellar season for the Bulls, who fired their coach early on, then saw players take issue initially with their hard-charging replacement. But the club has shown progress the past couple of weeks since trading for wingman Otto Porter, who looks to be a great fit on both ends with shoot-first players like Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen.

Some fans didn’t like the move, as Porter’s hefty contract all but took the Bulls out of the running for a max-level free agent this summer. But there’s value in acquiring solid players who can complement your young core. The best evidence of that so far: The Bulls have logged a net rating of 14 — meaning they outscore opponents by 14 points per 100 possessions — in the 110 minutes that Porter, LaVine and Markkanen have shared on the court thus far. Not too shabby for a club that’s been beaten by 8.5 points per 100 plays on the year to this point.

The early Chicago returns could serve as a blueprint for the rebuilding Hawks, who have young, budding talents of their own in John Collins, Trae Young and Kevin Huerter. The youngsters have each had their moments of offensive brilliance,23 but the trio, defensively challenged to put it kindly, has been outscored by 5.6 points per 100 possessions.

Finding veterans who can consistently defend at a high level to play next to them, and developing those three on D, will go a long way in determining when and whether Atlanta can turn it around.

The MVP race could come down to the wire

Making sense of this year’s MVP race has been a challenge. Just when Giannis Antetokounmpo seemed to be the clear leader for the award, given his eye-popping numbers for the team with the best record in the sport, James Harden came bursting through like the Kool-Aid Man, forcing himself into the conversation with a historic scoring streak.

There are a couple of other players, like Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid24 and Oklahoma City’s Paul George, whose outstanding play deserves consideration, too. But this will more than likely end up being a two-man race.

Harden’s offensive domination over the past two months has shifted a narrative that was shaping up to be a runaway for Antetokounmpo. Yet it’s worth watching whether some level of voter fatigue (Harden won the award last year, whereas Antetokounmpo has never been a front-runner before) comes into play. And there are those who dislike Harden’s iso-heavy style, even though he’s had little choice but to rely on that, given the injuries his team has suffered.

So it wouldn’t be surprising if Antetokounmpo eventually gets the nod here, particularly if the Bucks end up finishing in first place.

Can LeBron will the Lakers into the playoffs?

It would be jarring to watch all-time great LeBron James go from making the NBA Finals eight straight years to not even making the playoffs in his first season out West. But it’s more than a mere possibility at this point: FiveThirtyEight’s projection model currently has the Lakers with just a 26 percent probability of reaching the postseason.

We wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if James can get the Lakers over the playoff line. Aside from his own individual greatness, the Lakers are in the process of wrapping up a difficult stretch in their schedule this month, with seven of their nine games as road tilts. Their fortunes figure to improve when the calendar turns to March.

The bigger question is whether it’s ultimately worth it for James to go into overdrive simply to earn a No. 8 seed and a first-round date with the two-time defending champion Warriors.25 As his five-week injury26 earlier in the season illustrated, James isn’t getting any younger. And while it’s nearly certain that he won’t take his foot off the pedal because of where the Lakers are in the standings, there’s an argument to be made that his energy would be better spent next season, once L.A. has another top-flight player to pair with him.

Will Denver emerge as the top challenger to Golden State out West?

Denver has been near the top of the standings all year, while clubs like the Thunder and the Rockets started slow before getting back on track to contend for home-court advantage in the first round.

The Nuggets seemingly deserve the benefit of the doubt in this discussion. Aside from having led the conference standings earlier in the season, they still own the West’s best record against quality competition — even slightly better than the Warriors’ mark against teams .500 or better. Their defense hasn’t been as good as it was to start the season, but they still have enough balance — in both their first and second units — to get the job done. And after Golden State, Denver is basically neck-and-neck with Oklahoma City in net rating in the West.

If anything gives us pause about the Nuggets, it’s their lack of playoff experience. It’s uncommon for a team that hasn’t been in the playoffs to suddenly make a deep run upon getting there, which might explain our model feeling better about a team like Houston, Oklahoma City or even Utah.

But the beauty of all this, of course, is that Denver — after being eliminated in the last game of the regular season in 2018 — will get a chance to set itself apart over these final 25 games.

The Houston Rockets bounced back from a 41-point drubbing in Game 3 Sunday night, rallying to beat the Golden State Warriors 95-92 Tuesday to even the Western Conference finals 2-2.

James Harden scored 30 points, Chris Paul added 27 and the Rockets, who opened the game in a 12-0 hole and rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the fourth quarter, hung on in a must-win Game 4.

Bill Simmons: Is CJ McCollum on the Blazers next year?

Zach Lowe: I’m going to say no.

Simmons: I’m going to no as well.

Lowe: Again, you’re forcing me at metaphorical gunpoint to make these calls, but I’m going to say no. I’ve said before there’s going to be crazy stuff that happens in the offseason because teams are taxed out and just kind of unhappy about life and Portland fits that to a T, so I’ll say no.

The two kick around a few trade ideas involving McCollum, but none that will set your hair on fire:

Simmons: Is there another team we’re missing?

Lowe: The McCollum deal I floated once and is a favorite among league insiders is McCollum for Drummond–sort of two teams just exchanging big money contracts and trying to reset themselves.

Simmons: I wouldn’t do that.

Simmons: He is!

Lowe: I don’t think they’re wrong. And they think Collins is going to be a really good stretch five. So I just don’t see it.

Simmons: If you were running Portland, would you keep McCollum and trade Lillard because he has more value?

Lowe: No.

* Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey joined Dwight Jaynes and Aaron Fentress of Rip City Radio/NBC Sports Northwest on Monday to discuss everything from the draft combine, to the playoff upset, to Portland’s pick at No. 24 and much more. You can listen to the entire 24-minute interview here. A few of Olshey’s answers below:

Olshey on draft depth: "We do see a lot of depth, we see guys that can contribute, we see guys that positionally can be fits for our organization. We also see a lot of teams that are building, that are looking for multiple picks, that potentially we could get involved in some deals like we did a couple years ago when we moved the 23rd pick for Mason Plumlee, and find an impact player because while we see the draft depth this year, I think other teams do as well. There are teams that are really trying to build with youth and take a longer lens to this thing. I think our pick will have value both ways, whether we select and add a young player we think can grow and contribute to the organization or whether we use that piece as an asset to acquire a veteran player with an established body of work that can step into a playoff team and contribute in April."

Olshey on how the first-round loss to the Pelicans provided a wake-up call: "I think the way that series went provided a really clear lens as far as what we need to do this offseason to build the roster to avoid that in the future. And knowing that some of the futures plays in terms of youth, trade exceptions, draft picks, maybe the focus needs to be shifted toward guys we know hit certain benchmarks and have bodies of work that we can rely on when we get into April and take some of the risk out of the room when we get into playoff series."

Olshey on drafting talent vs. need: "I think it’s about adding talent. I think when you’re in a market like ours, when it’s far more difficult to buy your way out of trouble with free agency, you have to find your talent through the draft. And I think if you do your job properly, you can get a far more talented, better player longterm out of the draft than you can via trade or the other vehicles we have. I think you’ve got to go all in on talent — talent figures it out, it finds a way and it always starts there. Character is big for us up here obviously and the chemistry with our group and how guys would fit in. I think at the end of the day talent finds its way onto the court. It’s our job to acquire it and Terry and the coaches do a great job developing the young guys and then putting them in the position to maximize their potential."

* Frank Urbina of Hoops Hype looks at potential landing spots for free agent-to-be Jusuf Nurkic, listing, along with the Blazers, the Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards as teams who could be interested in the Bosnian Beast. Urbina ultimately identifies the Blazers as the most likely outcome:

And because of how cap-space poor the rest of the league will find itself this summer, it could come at an even cheaper price than they could have ever imagined when they traded for the big man.

It’s tough to envision any team shelling out cash to sign Nurkic. His play thus far as a professional has been inconsistent, and his affinity for awkward floaters as opposed to dunks and long mid-range jumpers instead of three-pointers hurt his future outlook.

Nurkic himself probably wants to prove he can be at least close to an elite center before agreeing to his next contract.

That’s why Nurkic taking the qualifying offer (a move another young big man, Nerlens Noel, tried last offseason) for 2018-19 and testing out the market again next summer could be his wisest course of action.

The qualifying offer would pay Nurkic a measly $4.8 million next year, but it would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019, when more teams will have money to spend.

Best-case scenario, Nurkic excels with the Blazers, showing all-out effort on a nightly basis while averaging a double-double on efficient shooting splits, and helping lead Portland to the second round of the playoffs for just the third time since Lillard’s arrival.

NBA playoff projections: Why the Cavs and Warriors will be the No. 1 seeds in the end

The 2018 NBA playoffs are months away. But the races for the top seeds and last spots are taking shape.

As the well-worn cliché goes, most of the world doesn’t pay attention to the NBA until the Christmas Day pentuple-header extravaganza. This is increasingly a lie: the league is ascendant and ratings have been booming early this year as fans flock to watch the nightly escapades of a cadre of superstars.

Still, a focus on stars and moments allows us to ignore in the early going the actual race everyone’s here for: the push for the NBA playoffs. While we are still quite far away from April, the races in each conference have fully shaped up. We are increasingly sure of which teams will be involved in the playoffs, and which teams will be involved in desperate races to make the playoffs.

Here’s our moment-in-time look at what the playoff brackets could look like. Note that this isn’t a straight reflection of the current standings: it’s a mash-up of the standings and expectations for how the rest of the season will play out.

Eastern Conference

Crème de la East

Boston maintains a small lead on the scorching Cavaliers in the East, but Isaiah Thomas is due to make his Cleveland debut in a couple of weeks. While there are murmurs of a potential Gordon Hayward comeback, that’s far less certain and deep into the future. So in terms of players that will be added to the equation midseason, advantage Cleveland.

Unless these teams get active in the trade market, of course. There’s no chance Boston is going to flip either of its high-end kids — good lord, Jayson Tatum! — but the Celtics still have picks and other younger players to leverage. The sense is that Danny Ainge will be content to try out this core in the playoffs, count on growth from Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and hope for the best with Hayward.

For the Cavaliers, that Nets pick is not positioned to be nearly as good as it could have been — Brooklyn is the 10th-worst team in the league right now — and there’s no more certainty on LeBron James’ future plans than there was when Cleveland traded Kyrie Irving for the pick and Thomas.

All of that means that the Celtics and Cavaliers probably aren’t going to be making major splashes in the trade game.

Toronto is quietly knocking on the No. 1 seed’s door, just 3.5 games behind Boston and one game behind Cleveland. The Raptors are eminently competent and a true joy to watch. Clearly the third best team in the conference, and one that could credibly win the conference with some breaks.

Race for the West

The Rockets have been dynamite all season and unstoppable with Chris Paul. James Harden seems to be a little banged up, and he’s been very durable during regular seasons. But you have to wonder if Mike D’Antoni will begin to find spots to rest Harden more to preserve him for what should be a vicious playoff run.

Meanwhile, Golden State is keeping pace with Houston in the standings without Stephen Curry and sometimes Draymond Green. Kevin Durant is making a case that he’s more valuable than Curry, who had gotten some buzz as a possible No. 3 contender in the two-man MVP race. If Harden rests a little and the Warriors continue to be a buzzsaw with whoever is available, odds are Golden State gets the No. 1 seed again.

Like the Raptors, the Spurs are totally competent and a presumptive lock for the No. 3 seed. Like the Raptors, the Spurs could totally win the conference with the right breaks. Kawhi Leonard is slowly being integrated back into the flow. By March, the Rockets and Warriors could be terrified of San Antonio once again.

Playoff Armageddon: East

In the East right now, three games separate the seven teams fighting for five playoff spots. These projections have the Knicks and Sixers on the outside. Those two plus the Pacers and Heat are really the teams most at risk of missing out. Indiana has been shockingly good to the point where you wonder if the magic will wear off. New York isn’t getting nearly as much attention as you’d expect given their continued averageness in the face of sure mediocrity. Many, however, expected Philadelphia and Miami to be in this zone.

The Heat get a spot in these projections because they have the best combination of a solid roster, a solid identity, and a great coach. Indiana gets the other spot on energy and a certain je ne sais quoi. The Sixers are on the outside because they are truly bad when Joel Embiid doesn’t play (as we knew coming into the season). The wheels must come off of the Knicks at some point, too, one has to believe.

Playoff Ar-meh-geddon: West

The West playoff race is ... a little boring? We have six teams in play for five spots, though generalized malaise is threatening to keep a few more mediocre squads in the race. (The Clippers are a 5-game win streak from being in the thick of it.)

The Wolves have the best upside and record of these teams. (You would never know it from reading Wolves fans talk about this team.) The expected Thunder surge just might be upon us as Russell Westbrook is deferring much less. The Blazers and Nuggets are solid. The Pelicans are unreliable but exciting. The Jazz can only stayed glued together without Rudy Gobert anchoring the defense for so long. (What Utah has done already is commendable.)

Injuries — to Mike Conley and Blake Griffin, in particular — ruined this race. Perhaps some unlikely heroes can save it down the stretch.

Or, How The Basketball Gods Sent Nikola Mirotic Back Into Action To Punish The Bulls For Their Crimes

The Chicago Bulls had a clear path to the No. 1 pick and Luka Doncic (or Marvin Bagley or DeAndre Ayton or Michael Porter) ... and then Nikola Mirotic came back! The Bulls have reeled off six straight wins since Mirotic debuted. He and Bobby Portis, irony of ironies, have been unstoppable as a duo.

This is what happens when you sell a draft pick amid a rebuild. This is what happens when you treat players like cattle. This is what happens when you test the resolve of the Basketball Gods. They smite you.

Your new clubhouse leader for the worst record in the NBA is the 7-23 Atlanta Hawks, who are just frisky enough to put the scare into opponents, much like last year’s Brooklyn team. Alas, the Hawks are still awful most nights.

The 8-23 Mavericks are right there in this race, and the 9-21 Grizzlies are our surprise entrant in the race. It’s honestly impressive how bad Memphis has been without Conley.

The Belated RTARL First Round of the NBA Postseason Extravaganza Smorgasbord of Fun

Some people say that the NBA season doesn’t truly begin until the playoffs start. Those people are dicks, but they kind of have a point. Shockingly, the quality of play rises when you’re only dealing with the top 16 teams in the league, and they’re all actually trying to win each night. Whodathunk it?! As someone who cares deeply for my readers, I want you to achieve financial success. Name me a safer financial investment than sports gambling? You can’t! It’s in that spirit that I’m sharing my knowledge with you, so that you can then parlay it into cold, hard cash. Now that I’ve had a chance to watch the first game of each series, predicting how things will play out is simple. Off we go!

Eastern Conference

#1 Boston Celtics vs. #8 Chicago Bulls: (CHI leads 1-0) This figures to be much closer than a typical 1 vs 8 match-up. The Celtics are a classic “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts” team, and in addition to having the best player in the series (Jimmy Butler), the Bulls have two guys known for great playoff performances in Wade and Rondo. I think it’ll be a hard-fought series, but I’m going with the Celts in 7.

#2 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #7 Indiana Pacers: (CLE leads 1-0) After a shockingly close game one win by Cleveland, the remainder of this series is likely to be an ass kicking. Cleveland hasn’t looked all that great for some time now, but neither have the Pacers. Paul George openly hates playing for Indiana, but he also fancies himself a superstar, so he’s going to do what he can to win. He’ll just passive-aggressively shit on his teammates and/or coaches after each loss. It’s delightful, really. The thought of renewed playoff interactions between LeBron and Lance Stephenson had me excited for a minute, until I remembered that it meant that a 2017 playoff team was wheeling Lance fucking Stephenson out there. Then I was sad. Cavs in 4.

#3 Toronto Raptors vs. #6 Milwaukee Bucks: (MIL leads 1-0) Oh yeah, now we’re talking. I loved the Raptors’ move to bring in Serge Ibaka, and they clearly have the better roster here. However, Giannis Antetokounmpo is a force of nature. The Raptors’ two best players (Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan) have drastically under-performed in prior trips to the postseason. In addition, Lowry is still finding his rhythm after missing several weeks due to injury. An out-of-sync favored team with a history of choking running up against an underdog with a potentially transcendent player is a recipe for an upset. All hail The Greek Freak, the Bucks win the series in 6.

#4 Washington Wizards vs. #5 Atlanta Hawks: (WAS leads 1-0) This one feels like a snoozer, to be honest. The Wiz have been one of the best teams in the NBA for the last couple of months, and the Hawks are just kind of there. If Dwight Howard is fully engaged and can stay out of foul trouble, maybe the Hawks can push it to 6 games. I don’t think he does, and I’m going with the Wizards in 5.

Western Conference

#1 Golden State Warriors vs. #8 Portland Trailblazers: (GS leads 1-0) No offense to the awesome Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum combo, but this is a gigantic mismatch. The Warriors take it in 4, and I think only one of the games will be close.

#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #7 Memphis Grizzlies: (SA leads 1-0) This another case where the higher-seeded team is simply on different level than their opponent. Marc Gasol is a criminally underrated player, and the Grizz come to play every night. They simply don’t have the horses to run with the Spurs. I think Memphis can take a game at home in the Grindhouse, but the Spurs win the series in 5.

#3 Houston Rockets vs. #6 Oklahoma City Thunder: (HOU leads 1-0) HELL YES. The top two candidates for this year’s league MVP meeting head-to-head in a playoff series? Sign me up. Sadly, the NBA has decided to hold off on announcing the winners of their individual awards until after the Finals. Under the old way of doing things, it’s entirely possible that we could’ve seen Russell Westbrook witness James Harden receive the MVP trophy before Game 2, and proceed to burst into actual flames. Despite his ugly game one performance, there’s still a decent chance Russ averages 40-12-12 in this series. It won’t be enough, as Houston has way too much firepower for one man to beat. Rockets in 6.

#4 Los Angeles Clippers vs. #5 Utah Jazz: (Utah leads 1-0) This series has already been marred by the injury to Jazz big man Rudy Gobert. If he hadn’t been hurt, I’d have picked the Jazz to win, but as it stands now, he’s going to be extremely compromised if he can even get on the court at all. He’s Utah’s best player, and without him at full strength, they can’t win. Utah already took game one, and I think the general malaise around the Clippers allows them to take one more, but that’s it. Clippers in 6.

With 140 (!) regular season wins the previous two seasons, Golden State has completed the most ever wins during a three season stretch, topping Michael Jordan’s late 90s Bulls. You would imagine they will have little trouble up against Portland, a team that finished the season strong but didn’t even finish the season over .500. (They ended the year at 41-41.)

Next comes Boston and Chicago, which is unexpectedly our No. 1 vs. 8 seed clash. Some pundits say this is a sneaky possible upset round, but I don’t see it. The Celtics have some flaws that may be exploited in the postseason, and Chicago ended the year strong, but it’s a stretch to say the Bulls — who were dysfunctional and massively underperforming this year — will be able to take advantage of those flaws for more than a couple games. Yes, Isaiah Thomas may struggle against a defense loading up to stop him, but Chicago has no individual defender who you could really expect to take on that assignment and consistently win.

The day concludes with a series that should be pure, unadulterated fun, even if it’s not as close as we think. Russell Westbrook, presumably the favorite to win MVP, heads up against James Harden, who is probably the runner-up right now. The two have played absurd series and are the beating heart of their teams’ entire offensive systems. They may not guard each other, except for moments where there’s scrambling or switches, but it should be a joy to watch the two face off against each other.
