Army beats Navy for 2nd year in a row, this time on missed kick at the buzzer
One of football’s greatest rivalries ... in the snow! Army now has a winning streak against Navy and the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, both for the first time since 1996.
Fourth Quarter
0:00. The most important football moment of Bennett Moehring’s life:
Army sings second for the second straight year and wins its first Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy since 1996.
Not this time http://pic.twitter.com/MrSCEnT1uC
— SB Nation CFB (@SBNationCFB) December 9, 2017
0:03. On fourth-and-ballgame, everything goes wrong for Navy ... and the Midshipmen convert anyway. Perry drops the snap and turns a run to the right into a naked scramble to the left. He gains 12 yards to the 25.
And then things go wrong again. Navy commits two false starts and gains three yards in two rushes. On third-and-16 from the 31, Perry is stuffed for no gain. Oy. Navy calls timeout with three seconds left, tasked with either attempting a 48-yarder in the snow or throwing a Hail Mary.
2:08. After one of the worst kickoff shanks you’ll ever see, Navy starts at its 35. Two Perry rushes move the chains, but on first down from the 45, the ball is snapped before Perry is ready; Darryl Bonner collects the ball and somehow manages to turn the play into merely a two-yard loss, and then Perry turns a likely called pass into a 13-yard scramble up the middle.
With crisis averted, Navy goes back to leaning on Perry. He gains six yards in two carries, but he’s stopped for a one-yard gain with 2:08 left.
5:10. Army 14, Navy 13. Army goes back to basics: Bradshaw for 12 yards, Bradshaw for 12, Bradshaw for nine, fullback for three, Bradshaw for five, fullback for three, Bradshaw for two and a first down, Bradshaw for five, fullback for four, Bradshaw for one and a first-and-goal. The clock creeps under seven minutes, which almost forces Army into a TD-or-nothing situation.
On second-and-goal, after Bradshaw is stuffed on first down, he makes a tough pitch to John Trainor wide; Trainor does a great job to stay in bounds, spin away from a tackler and nearly lunge into the end zone.
Bradshaw takes it in from there on third down, and despite doing almost nothing offensively since the first quarter, Army leads.
12:50. First-down penalties’ll kill you, especially with these offenses. Navy goes three-and-out thanks to a false start, and Army will start at its 35.
#PossessionWatch is canceled again.
14:55. Blake Wilson misses the field goal, and it remains a six-point Navy lead.
That was the 11th possession of the game, by the way. If the teams combine for just two possessions the rest of the way — like they did in the first and third quarters — this game will at least tie for the fewest in a game since 2005. #PossessionWatch
Third Quarter
0:00. ARMY PASSED. And it will go in the books as a completion no matter how ugly it was in getting from Bradshaw to Calen Holt for a 20-yard gain. Here’s proof:
That stuns Navy as much as me, and it loosens the defense up a bit. Bradshaw rushes for 21 yards inside the Middies’ 40, and five straight fullback runs move the chains twice. Like Navy, though, Army stalls out in the red zone. A false start creates third-and-long, and a reverse attempt fails. The fourth quarter will begin with a 35-yard field goal attempt.
9:16. Navy 13, Army 7. Navy begins the second half by leaning on Perry some more. He carries the ball four times in the first five plays of the second half and rips off a 46-yarder to the Army 11.
From there, though, the Black Knights stop High for four yards and stuff Perry twice. Bennett Moehring makes a 23-yarder, but Army has to feel pretty happy about only being down six. Perry has 206 rushing yards, but Navy only has 13 points.
Halftime
Some stats:
Total yards: Navy 172, Army 109.
Yards per play: Navy 7.1, Army 4.6.
Third downs: Army 1-for-5, Navy 1-for-6.
Army quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw has nine carries for just 22 yards. Walker has four carries for 40 yards, but his success came on the first drive. Woolfolk has eight carries for 39 yards.
Navy actually threw the ball! Sort of! Abey was 1-for-1 for two yards, and Craig Scott, the trick play passer, is 0-for-1.
Perry has been the difference in the game. He has 15 carries for 146 yards and a score. Chris High has five carries for 14 yards, and Abey has two for three.
Second quarter
0:00. Navy kills most of the clock and converts a fourth-and-1 but stalls out around midfield, and that’s that for the first half. The Middies lead by three.
5:22. The defenses have adjusted masterfully. Army moves the chains once but quickly punts again. This has turned into the field position game one would have expected given the weather.
7:33. TRICK PLAY. Navy calls timeout facing a third-and-6 and comes out with a double-reverse pass. It’s exciting. It’s also incomplete. Navy punts, and it’s downed at the Army 37.
Projected total possessions at the current rate: 16.0. #PossessionWatch is officially canceled.
9:13. Uh oh, an Army three-and-out. Navy’s defensive front is starting to get penetration, and the Black Knights come up a couple of yards short on third down. Navy will start at the 33, hoping to go up two possessions.
11:28. Navy 10, Army 7. Okay, that’s not how you set a record for possessions. Perry, still carrying the lion’s share of the load, rips off a 68-yard touchdown. Perfectly executed in every way. IT’S A TRACK MEET!
Projected total possessions at the current rate: 13.0. Boo.
13:00. Army gets a little fancy to start the second quarter, and it backfires. A counter handoff to John Trainor loses yardage, then Walker gets stuffed on the outside. The first punt of the game is downed at the Navy 26.
Projected total possessions at the current rate: 10.6. #PossessionWatch
First quarter
0:00. Since 2005, the fewest possessions in a single game has been 13. It’s happened four times: 2008 Navy-NIU, 2016 Navy-Notre Dame, 2017 Army-Air Force, and 2017 Stanford-Cal.
We’re currently on pace for about nine or 10. POSSESSION WATCH is on. Army will start the second quarter with a first down at its 42.
0:55. Army 7, Navy 3. Well this is a pretty fun wrinkle. QB-turned-slotback Malcolm Perry starts at quarterback for Navy and rushes five consecutive times, mostly behind the fullback sharing the backfield with him, for 46 yards.
With regular starter Zach Abey at QB, the Middies convert a fourth-and-1 to the Army 18, then it’s back to Perry. Army stiffens, however, and forces a fourth-and-2. Navy goes against brand and elects to settle for 28-yard field goal. Holy crap, the first quarter’s already almost over. This is going to be the shortest live blog ever.
8:06. Army 7, Navy 0. Army, in uniforms matching the snow on the field, gets the ball first after Navy wins the toss and defers. Starting from the 32 after a short kick, the Black Knights grind out exactly 10 yards (and not an inch more) in three plays between the tackles, then Kell Walker gets the ball on the edge and goes 33 yards.
Then it’s back to grind mode: seven rushes (mostly between the tackles), 25 yards, a fourth-and-1 conversion, and a touchdown run by Darnell Woolfolk. That was everything Army wanted to establish on its opening drive.
Pregame
These uniforms (which have a lot of meaning) are gonna look amazing against each other.
And we got a snow game, y’all. Expect it to keep coming down for the entirety of the game.

A week after most college football teams played in their rivalry game, the Army Black Knights will face off against the Navy Midshipmen for 118th time on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET on CBS (live stream).
College GameDay will be in Annapolis for the matchup, in which these teams will be competing for the Commander-in-Chief Trophy — the first time since 2012 it’s come down to the these two teams. Air Force is the current holder of the CIC trophy, with the Midshipmen last winning it in 2015, and Army’s last claim over the prestigious award back in 1996.
Last year’s rivalry matchup between these teams ended with the Black Knights finally breaking a 14-game losing streak to the Midshipmen, with a 21-17 victory. Both teams have used last year’s game as motivation, with one team looking to start their own winning streak, and the other trying to get their’s back.

Odds: Navy opened as 3.5-point favorites.
Army vs. Navy news:
The Black Knights will don special uniforms to honor the story of the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division
The specialty of the 10th Mountain Division is to conquer the land. They fight on the harshest terrain, in any climate, anywhere in the world, to protect and defend the United States of America. We honor the past by re-telling the story of the "Climb to Glory."
Navy will also wear Blue Angel uniforms (a tribute to the U.S. Navy’s flight team) during Saturday’s matchup, and they are amazing.
"This tribute to the Blue Angels reflects the enthusiastic pride and appreciation we have for the Navy's premier flying team and the motivation they convey to Navy football and the fleet at large," Navy AD Chet Gladchuk said.
Army’s head coach Jeff Monkin knows his team might not be as big physically as their opponent, but they’ve done some different things to make up for it.
"We're not the most athletic, fastest, or biggest team most weeks that we play. I know Ken (Niumatalolo) would tell you the same thing about his team. They're as long, as big, and as athletic as they've ever been at Navy. They've got a great looking football team. We are not like that. We have to mix enough things up on defense and kind of be like how we are on offense, where we do something different than everyone else to give ourselves a chance and I think that's what Jay has done. But, our kids have to execute it. Most of the time we've done pretty well. Last time out against North Texas though, they scored 52 points in regulation. That's a lot of points. There's times we don't do it very well."
Get ready for a lot of running in this matchup.
Aside from being service academies, both Army and Navy run the triple-option offense, which for opponents can be daunting. Relying so heavily on the run has limited the Black Knights to just 335 total passing yards (between two QBs) with only 60 total attempts. The Midshipmen tend to throw a little more often, totaling 1,003 passing yards on the season against 99 attempts.
On the ground however, the two teams are much more impressive. The Black Knights offense has amassed 4,049 rushing yards this season, with running back Ahmad Bradshaw claiming 1,472 of those (and 11 touchdowns). Despite almost halving Bradshaw’s yardage, Darnell Woolfork has almost seen the endzone 11 times this season.
The Midshipmen’s version of Bradshaw is running back Zach Abey. The rusher leads the team with 1,322 yards and 14 scores. With a penchant to throw it here and there, it stands to reason that Navy’s overall rushing yards would be just shy of Army, totaling (a still impressive) 3,822 yards.
Army vs. Navy prediction:
It’ll be a ground and pound afternoon with limited numbers of passes to break things up, but ultimately the Midshipmen get a win in Philadelphia and once again claim the Commander-in-Chief Trophy.

College Football week 10
I cursed myself last week, because I mentioned I was in dangerous territory where one lousy week could doom me. Well, I had the aforementioned lousy week going 1-4. My record is now 31-28-2, which is much closer to the 50% mark, then the 60% mark that I aim for every season. I got hosed by USF and Colorado State (again). This week I’ve got some games I really like, plus some money line dogs. Let’s get to the picks: Navy (-7, o/u 55) @ Temple – Thursday night game This line is all over the place, anywhere from 7, 7.5 or 8 depending on where you shop/play. I played it at 7 (20 minutes ago), so that’s what I am going with. Temple has been playing better football as of late and they did see a triple option attack in Army (who they lost to in OT). The Navy attack is a bit better and different, because unlike Army, Navy will throw and complete an occasional forward pass. In fact, when they do throw, it tends to hit for a big play. This is a huge game for Navy in the AAC, as they have two conference losses, including one to division leading Memphis. Another loss all but ends their hopes for a spot in the AAC Championship game. Tight game, eventually I like the Midshipmen to cover the 7.
Minnesota @ Michigan (-15.5, o/u 40.5) - I am still not sure what the oddsmakers and bookies are seeing in this Michigan team. If you ignore the stats and their terrible record ATS (2-5-1, 0-4 at home), the eye test tells you this Wolverines team has major problems on offense. They are getting terrible QB play and are relying on their defense to win games for them. That is not a great formula when you are routinely a double digit favorite. Minnesota is pretty much the definition of average. They are 4-4 under boat rower PJ Fleck, 3-4-1 ATS (1-1-1 on the road). They don’t do anything great, but they aren’t really bad at any phase of the game either. That’s fine for my purposes, as they are just average enough to not get blown out by this version of Michigan. I’m rolling the dice that Michigan can’t beat anyone by 15.5, I’m taking the Gophers getting the points. UCF (-14.5 o/u 75) @ SMU - Another AAC tilt between the front runner UCF and upstart SMU. Huge game for both teams, as UCF is pushing hard for a conference title and the Group of 5 spot in a New Year’s Six bowl. SMU still has hopes of winning their division and a loss here puts them in jeopardy for that. If you haven’t watched UCF play this year, you are missing out. Their offense is fantastic as they are averaging 51 points per game. Defensively, they haven’t been bad either giving up just under 20ppg. They will get a test on defense from a very good, balanced SMU offense that is no slouch with their 41.5ppg average. You can probably figure out where my pick is heading and that is the over. It’s a big number and there is a chance this is a UCF blowout, but that shouldn’t impact the total. Take the over here and enjoy this one.
Colorado @ Arizona State (-4, o/u 58) - Another line that is different depending on where you play. I have it at 3, but it seems the consensus has moved to 4, so we’ll go with 4. Sun Devils came back to earth a bit with their annual ass kicking at the hands of USC. Don’t read too much into that game in terms of how you evaluate ASU. They’re still wildly athletic, can put points on you in a hurry and now that their defense stopped blitzing every down, they are at least average. If you follow me on Twitter, you know I am not a big fan of this year’s Colorado team. I know they pummeled Cal last week, but they aren’t anything special. QB play has been inconsistent, their running game isn’t as good as it was last year despite Phillip Lindsay still being there and this defense gets gashed in most games. I like ASU to bounce back, close game that they end up covering. Play Arizona State minus the 4.
Nevada @ Boise State (-22, o/u 58) - You didn’t think I’d get through my picks without one from the Mountain Best Conference did you? The 1-7 Wolfpack travel to Blue Turf Hell Stadium to face the Broncos. This should be a cakewalk for Boise, but there are some interesting trends that I couldn’t ignore after researching this one. Despite their record, Nevada is decent ATS; 4-3 overall and 2-2 on the road. Boise is 3-5, just 1-3 at home, including a straight up loss as a 14 point favorite vs Virginia. Virginia was too fast on offense, had better athletes and the better QB. Nevada may not have better athletes, but the QB debate is up for discussion. Nevada’s Ty Gangi has been pretty good this year. His numbers are better than both Boise QB’s (Rypien and Cozart). The Wolfpack’s problems have not been offense, as they put up 35ppg in MWC play. I’m not saying Nevada pulls a Virginia and wins the game, but this spread is too big for me to pass up. I’ll take Nevada getting 22 points.
Okay, so now let’s do some gambling. Last week I rolled with Iowa State +223, last night it was Central Michigan +155. I did take one in the nuts with Texas A&M, so please don’t be under the impression that I am some sort of underdog Svengali. Here are the two dogs I like straight up:
Syracuse (+175) @ Florida State -
By all means, go ahead and take the Cuse +5 here, but let’s take it a step further. This is not the FSU you are accustomed to seeing. If you needed any more evidence of that, go re-watch them quit about halfway thru their beat down at the hands of Boston College last Friday night. They are struggling on offense due to freshman QB James Blackman playing like a true freshman. He is turning the ball over and putting their defense in short fields or making them stay on the field way too long. That formula, against Syracuse QB Eric Dungey and this offense will get you killed. Dungey has been really good this year, minus his first half at Miami. FSU might still have better talent according to ESPN/Rivals rankings, but it’s not showing on the field this season. Take the Orange to add to the miserable season of Florida State and make some decent cash in the process.
Oklahoma (+120) at Oklahoma State -
Okay, so not a huge reach here, but the Sooners are a dog and +120 beats -110 when it comes to your wallet. I am going to leave the analysis and trend to talk to real handicappers. This one is gut and eye test. I just don’t believe in or trust this Oklahoma State team. Before last week, they had screwed me every single week with either not hitting an over or covering a spread. I’ve been wrong on them nearly every week, so it’s entirely possible I am wrong again. Both teams are great on offense, they put 11 men on the field when they are allegedly on defense and they have two great college QB’s. We don’t really have a track record on Lincoln Riley in big games so far, but we have one on the human mullet Mike Gundy. I know I don’t trust him to win a big one (he really should have lost that Texas game, let’s be honest here) so I’ll take the new guy and Baker Mayfield. Florida (+145) at Missouri - New coach energy, an actual college QB taking snaps (Malik Zaire) and Florida gets to play a team with possible the worst defense in the Power 5 conferences (yes, even worse than Texas Tech). I’m hoping the Gators sack up and put it together for one game this season.

Military Bowl 2017: Virginia vs. Navy location, date, and more
Date, time, location, team records, and more on this newly announced bowl game.
Also, click over here for the full 2017-2018 college football bowl game schedule as it’s announced throughout Sunday.
Where is the Military Bowl, and how can I watch?
Stadium and city: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
Date and time: Dec. 28, 1:30 p.m. ET
TV and streaming: ESPN and WatchESPN
What should I know about the two teams in the Military Bowl?
Virginia (6-6, 3-5 in ACC)
The Cavaliers are bowling for the first time since 2011. Bronco Mendenhall got them there in his second year on the job, and the Hoos didn’t even have much drama: They were eligible with six wins by the first weekend in November. It’s been an impressive resurgence.
The UVA offense is not good, but the defense definitely is. The Hoos are stingy, and they’re a much more solid team than they’ve been in the last half-decade. This will be just their third bowl appearance since 2005. They only played in one during Mike London’s five seasons, and Mendenhall’s now equalled that total in two years.
For more on UVA, check out SB Nation’s Streaking the Lawn.
Navy (6-5, 4-4 in AAC)
The Midshipmen are getting pretty used to the “bowl game” thing. They’re playing in one for the 14th time in 15 years, dating back to the second year of now-Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s tenure in 2013. They didn’t have a blockbuster win this year, but the Mids continued to establish themselves as a difficult out in the AAC, their league of three seasons.
Navy still has its annual game with Army to play before its bowl. That’s always the biggest game of the Mids’ season, though they’ll enjoy bowling again, too.
It’s clear at this point that Navy’s not “good for a mid-major.” Navy’s just good. For more on the program, stop by Underdog Dynasty, SB Nation’s hub for all things AAC.

Navy vs. Notre Dame 2017 live stream: Time and how to watch online
The Fighting Irish have to shift expectations for their postseason run.
After falling back down to Earth in a spectacularly bad loss to Miami (Fla.), the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are back at home for this Week 12 matchup against the Navy Midshipmen, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC (live stream).
Brian Kelly and his team were finally atop the college football rankings, coming in at No. 3 in the CFP poll just last week. Kelly spoke ahead of Week 11 that without a conference championship to boost them into the playoff, Notre Dame would have to win out to make it to the postseason. That didn’t happen. And boy, was it bad.
Time, TV channel, and streaming info
Time: 3:30 p.m. ET
Location: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Ind.
TV: NBC
Streaming: NBC Sports
Odds: Notre Dame opened as incredible 18.5-point favorites over the Midshipmen.
Navy vs. Notre Dame news:
Navy will never give up the triple-option. It works.
Last week’s loss was brutal, but that doesn’t mean Brian Kelly is on the hot seat ... yet.
The Midshipmen have a bit of a quarterback controversy on their hands if both options are healthy for this Week 12 matchup.
Malcom Perry competed for the starting quarterback job in the offseason, but Zach Abey eventually won that battle. With Abey out last week, Perry was called upon to run the offense. The result was a 33 carry, 282 yard, and four touchdown performance.
The Fighting Irish were out-manned, out-coached, and down-right embarrassed last weekend against Miami.
It was, admittedly, a rehashing of the “Catholics versus Convicts” tale, circa 1985. The Irish got embarrassed by a more athletic and more prepared Miami team then, and they got the same treatment this year. The failures on the big stage are not an anomaly at this point. It is a pattern, one that needs to break soon if the Irish wish to reach that standard to which Kelly so often references.
What’s left for these teams this season?
Navy started off the 2017 season on a hot-streak, winning their first five contests before falling to Memphis. The loss to the Tigers kicked off a series of two more losses to UCF and Temple before a big — and much-needed — win over SMU. The Midshipmen have two more games following this Week 12 matchup, taking on Houston as the road team, before finishing the year against Army on Dec. 9. Thanks to their win over SMU, Navy has already earned their bowl eligibility.
It’s hard to picture Notre Dame still making it to their first College Football Playoff after last weekend’s 41-8 loss to a still undefeated Miami (Fla.) team. And like Kelly noted, the program doesn’t have a conference championship to help boost them into the conversation. The Fighting Irish will cap off their season with a road game against Stanford, and then will have to bide their time to find out where they’ll be bowling in the postseason.
Navy vs. Notre Dame prediction:
Brian Kelly’s head might pop off of his body if the Fighting Irish don’t make a clear comeback from last week’s loss. It’ll be unfortunate that this retribution game will come against a service academy, but it has to be done. Notre Dame gets the win at home.
