going from the late Roman Republic to 4th century CE Roman Empire but skipping several centuries in-between the two is really creating a lot of 'guy who's only heard of x: wow this sure is giving x!' situations. what do you mean this guy kept gratian's body and didn't even use his head as a prop. you're telling me gratian had a window of opportunity for sole power and didn't go full caligula. Can you imagine percabeth children growing up in New Rome where everything is clean and orderly and thought-out and then your parents send you away to the summer camp they went to as kids and you think, cool. My mom’s an Olympus-renowned architect and my dad is a former praetor. This must be like some elite, fancy camp, better than camp Jupiter. And then you show up and half of it is a strawberry farm and there’s wild woods with monsters (“only for battle practice!”) and fawns (no, satyrs) and everything is so disorganized compared to Camp Jupiter and you’re just like.
