Little facts about Wolfgang Von Trips which I have picked up reading The Limit by Michael Cannell. Dot point style inspired by @cazzyf1

Wolfgang was known as Wölfchen [little wolf] by his parents.

As a child, he hated going to social outings due to the leggings & ruffled shirts his parents forced him to wear.

If left on his own as a child, he would run through the apple orchard or paddle along the moats around his house. He also had a secret treehouse in his favourite tree.

Wolfgang as a baby. Does it surprise anyone that he was like the cutest baby??

His first car crush was the family's Opel Super 6.

During WW2, when he was 16 he was drafted to search through air raid debris. He said he "saw the whole of human suffering firsthand."

He learned English from the African Americans living in his house and apparently could speak nearly flawless Americanized English.

He had a tendency to faint when he went through without eating. It is likely believed he had diabetes but it was never diagnosed.

His first motorsports obsession was motorbikes

At his first Mille Miglia, he won his class and came thirty-third overall!

Like many drivers starting out, he had to hide from his parents about his racing obsession. They viewed Wolfgang as the last hope for their family as he was their only child.

So when his parents went out for dinner after the Mille Miglia, the waiter asked if they were related to the Von Trips who had a class win - "I'm sorry no, my son is studying in West Germany." They didn't know until they saw the newspaper.

He raced under the pseudonym Axel Linther, a man he borrowed from a dead-end branch of the family tree.

He was actually supposed to race in the 1955 Le Mans however he was replaced by Pierre Levegh as Levegh had more experience. Von Trips was actually in the crowd and witnessed the accident.

He got the nickname Crash Von Trips due to crashing out within the first lap.

E*zo Ferrari said Wolfgang had "a noble spirit."

He used to call Phil Hill "Philee Hillee".

He always got called 'The Count' or 'Taffy', though no one knows how he got the latter nickname. It is believed another driver said he looked like a Taffy, which means Welshman or a beloved friend.

He appeared in a video encouraging people to get into motorsports for the "mastery of technical structure".

He would always carry cameras at the races to record his events, friends, girlfriends, etc and then when home he would tape-record himself talking about what was in the film.

At the 1957 German Grand Prix, he didn't race due to a broken leg. His Ferrari teammates Mike Hawthorn & Peter Collins gave him a set of yellow, blue, and white flags so he could signal the location of Fangio.

I C O N I C A L L Y When Fangio was kidnapped in Cuba, Wolfgang was lending a group of drivers on a tour of Havana's seedy clubs.

He had to get to a post-race interview but had no way of getting to the meeting point so he borrowed a bicycle from a teenager and rode with the teen sitting on the handlebar LMAO.

He was a big hope for Germany, especially after WW2, and became a national symbol. If he had won the 1961 championship, he would have been the first German to do so. That didn't come until 1994 with Michael Schumacher.

Speaking of Schumi, Wolfgang was very passionate about karting and established a go-kart racetrack near Kerpen which Michael would later take his first-ever lap on!

After the Christmas Party

What happens when you get a little too drunk at the office Christmas party and a tickle-phile is the one who brings you home? Jay is about to find out! Other than being a little kidnappy, this is SFW.

With his head swimming, Jay slowly started to wake up, but he didn't know what exactly had happened, where he was, or how he got there. The last thing he remembered was having a good time at the office Christmas party and his co-worker Dan helping him into the car. He didn’t normally drink too much, but with wine and beer and hard liquor (whiskey being Jay’s favourite) everywhere and all of the senior partners encouraging everyone to enjoy themselves, Jay decided to let loose and live a little.  The pounding headache he had told him exactly how much he'd been drinking the night before.

Something was wrong, though. This wasn't his house… there was tape over his mouth… he was tied up… and his bare feet were propped up on a footstool.  Jay tried to stand up and wiggle free from the bonds but his head was still pounding and his stomach felt like he might be sick.  Just how much had he had to drink?!

"Oh, you're awake?" Jay’s coworker Dan said as he walked into the room. Jay instantly knew something was wrong: Day was just wearing an old tee shirt and a pair of boxers.

Jay tried to speak, but nothing came out of his mouth except for a muffled garble. As he tried to speak he realized that there was something in his mouth. His tongue pushed up against it, trying to find out just whatever it was.  It felt like it was some kind of fabric that tasted sort of salty.

"Sorry about the sock gag, I just didn't want you to scream if you woke up before I did."

Jay’s stomach rolled again.  He was tasting his own sock?  Disgusting.  Jay tried yelling through the sock in his mouth but it was useless.

Dan walked over and ran a hand across Jay’s tied and propped bare feet. Jay could feel Dan's hungry eyes taking the feet in.

"Ever since you made junior partner, I've had my eyes on you. Especially the provocative way you slip your shoes off in the office when you think no one is looking. Believe me... I noticed and I was looking."

Dan sat down beside the tied feet and took them into his hands. Jay tried to kick back, tried to fight to keep this pervert’s hands off his feet, but he couldn't save himself or do anything as Dan began massaging his feet.  Dan’s hands felt strong and confident, not the hands of someone who felt bad that he was taking advantage of a coworker in a very intimate way.

"We're going to have some fun, you and I, and if you say anything about it to anyone I'll see that you're knocked down by the office assistant so fast your head will spin, got it?"

There was nothing Jay could do. Not only was Dan his superior at work, but being tied and vulnerable like this meant that the ball was in Dan's court. With angry and defiant eyes he nodded to Dan, submitting to whatever he had planned.

"Good," Jay purred as his hands continued to grope the bound feet, massaging the broad soles and rolling the toes around between his fingers.

"I got some amazing toys I want to use on these puppies, give you a solid workout. What do you say?"

There was nothing he could do in this situation, so Jay just hung his head in defeat.

"That's a good boy, giving in like that. Makes what's going to happen to you all the easier."

Jay left the room and returned a few minutes later with a silver tray. There were all sorts of items on the tray, from hair brushes, electric toothbrushes, scrubbers, feathers, and some baby oil.  Jay wasn’t completely sure what all of this stuff was for but he had the strong suspicion he wasn’t going to like it.  He curled his toes wondering just what was in store for him and his feet.  His eyes lingered on the feathers for a moment.  Surely Dan wasn’t going to… tickle him?  Was he?  That’s not something that people actually did with feathers… was it?

"Let's see just how ticklish you are, and if you squeal nicely enough for me, maybe we'll only do this once or twice a week going forward, hmm?"

Why oh why did he ever slip his shoes off in the office?  If he knew some pervert was going to be watching him because of that he would have kept his shoes tightly on his feet.

“Just a little test tickle, what do you say?”

Dan picked up one of the hair brushes from the tray and brought it to Jay’s foot.  He teased with the brush, running just the very tips of the bristles up and down Jay’s tied soles, giving just a sneak peek of what was to come.  Jay struggled, trying to pull his feet away, but couldn’t escape.

The speed and the force of the tickling picked up.  The brush would travel up and down the bare sole.  First the brush stopped at the smooth heel, scrubbing vigorously back and forth.  This tickled more than Jay expected it would, causing the tied up young man to giggle continuously behind his sock gag.  The brush continued up and stopped at the toes this time.  The man grabbed the toes, pulled them back, and started brushing the sensitive skin right under the toes.

Jay wasn’t giggling this time.  This time, he threw his head back and started to cackle behind his sweaty sock gag.  The sensation was intense, and his legs were vibrating as he tried desperately to pull his feet away.  He tried to curl up his toes, but Dan was holding them too tightly.

Dan continued tickling Jay like this, up and down the sole, scrubbing the heel, and attacking the base of the toes.  It felt like hours had passed.  Jay was sweating in his suit, drool was dribbling out of his mouth, and tears were rolling down his cheeks.  He’d never felt so completely broken in his entire life.

Finally the brushing stopped and Jay’s entirely body relaxed.  

“Well, that was a good test tickle… what do you say we try the… harder stuff?”

Dan grabbed a long straight feather from the tray.  Jay’s eyes went wide and he started thrashing his head back and forth.  This was about to become a lot worse.

His superior brought the feather to Dan’s broad sole and started flicking with it.  It didn’t tickle as much as the brush did, but Jay could feel it.  It was this fleeting touch, just at the edge of his feet.  It felt… weird.  Unfortunately it Jay wasn’t giving the reaction that Dan wanted.

“Not too feather ticklish?  That’s fine.  Let’s try it between the toes”

The feather was suddenly flossed between his big and second toe.  Jay jumped.  Holy shit, that actually tickled.  Dan grinned and did it again, making Jay jump again in his restraints.  

“Hmm, this seems better, doesn’t it?”

Dan moved down the line, dragging the feather between Jay’s ticklish toes.  Jay tried to curl them to keep the feather out, but Dan would just grab them and force them open.  Soon Jay stopped fighting back and gave into the toe tickling.  The feather kept flossing between toes, first one foot then the other, over and over again.  Jay was laughing and trying to pull his feet away.  Jay, who always thought himself pretty tough and manly, was being reduced to a giggling and laughing mess by nothing more than a feather.

The feather kept its torment going for several minutes.  By the end of the torture Jay’s feet had started to sweat, making the feather glide even easier between his squirming toes.  Jay’s entire body slumped when the feather finally gave it’s last swipe.

“You’re doing good, kid.  You’re doing real good.  How are we feeling so far?”

Jay didn’t have the energy to fight or yell anymore.  He just hung his head and mumbled something into his sock.

Dan put away the feather and pulled up the electric toothbrush and the bottle of baby oil.  Opening the bottle, Dan held it over Jay’s feet and just let the oil dribble down over the tops of his toes, watching as it ran down.  To Jay it felt almost pleasant.  A nice cooling sensation on his hot feet.  Dan massaged his tied feet again, this time working the baby oil into the soles, covering the toes, and of course between each and every single toe.  Jay hated to admit it, but after all the torment he’d been through, this actually felt nice.  Dan must have been able to tell (probably because Jay stopped fighting and went to mush in his hands) and chuckled.

“You think this feels nice, huh?  Wait until you meet my little friend here.”

Jay watched as Dan picked up the electric toothbrush.  He turned it on and off, revving it like a manic welds a chainsaw.

“Let’s introduce you, shall we?”

Classic rock-philes and deep Beatles fans will recognize him from the brother band Lon & Derrek Van Eaton. Prior to their association with Apple Records (the record label created by The Beatles), they were part of the eccentric New York-based folk rock band Jacob’s Creek. They shared a studio with Simon & Garfunkel and released one album on Columbia in 1969. Two years later, John Lennon and George Harrison “discovered” them as a brother-act duo and signed them to Apple. The Van Eaton’s music blended urban folk and dreamy rock with a blues-gospel undercurrent, which perfectly coincided with the sounds of Badfinger and latter-day Beatles. The Van Eaton’s excellent BROTHER album was co-produced by George with Klaus Voorman. The Van Eatons toured the USA to promote BROTHER. Their 1972 tour brought them to where I was living in Huntingdon PA, where they played Ellis Hall at Juniata College (I stood listening from outside, a lad with no ticket money).  

The BROTHER album launched a long association with George, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, and other travelers in the Apple/Beatle legacy that unfolded in the 1970s. Then the Van Eatons became studio session players favored by producer Richard Perry, who hired them for recordings with Art Garfunkel, Martha Reeves, and Carly Simon. Perry also produced the Van Eaton’s 1975 WHO DO YOU OUT DO album. Following that era, the brothers created a non-profit film and music company called Imagine a Better World. 

The Van Eaton brothers since have released sporadic works (duo and solo), notably their acclaimed 1996 cover of “Apple of my Eye” on the COME & GET IT Badfinger tribute album. In 2013 they issued a career-spanning anthology with new recordings with contributions from Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, Klaus Voormann, and Gary Wright, and the Van Eatons are still active in musical and spiritual pursuits. 

Some years ago I met Derrek some years ago at church we were both attending in Pennsylvania (where I picked his brains about that 1972 concert I heard but couldn’t see), and the last time we crossed paths was at a Monkees concert in Denver in 2011. Even in passive meet-ups I can see the creative spark in Derrek’s eyes. Aahaaahhh NARA YOU SPOIL ME! When I saw this ask I squealed and rubbed my hands together. You know me, if you give me options I'll choose both, but I'll start with our boy Thurston.

003 - Character: Thurston Niles

How I feel about this character: I like him! I think he's a well-written, morally grey antagonist for Fetch and I'm excited to see where Luke takes him. The industrialist character is obviously one you want to watch in a setting that experiences an industrial revolution. I love that he should be the epitome of conformism and normality and reason but he's shown to be a bit of a freak (inviting your casual enemy over to duel in armor hello?).

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Complicated question. I like reading Philes fics, and I do like them together, it can be weird as fuck, I'm into that. But if you know me you know how attached I am to canon compliance when I engage with a piece of media. I can only truly ship characters when there are solid canon elements to support it (look at my other ships, like Destiel, and you'll see what I mean). So I can like ships and read fics for ships like Fetch/Niles but by my definition of shipping, I don't ship them. Maybe that doesn't make sense, idk. Sorry!

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I would have loved to see Lance and Thurston in action together. I'm sure they made a great team, and since we are in Fetch's POV, we never quite see how much the loss affected Niles, who must feel like half of a pair left alive.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Maybe I'd like him to keep being a bastard and a real antagonist for Fetch. I'm all for their reluctant friendship, but I genuinely want him to be a villain.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I want him to come to a point where he has a difficult moral choice to make. Like, between his business interests and the well-being of some people. A Schindler moment (remember we compared him to Schindler an eternity ago, Nara?). I want to see where he falls in a situation like this.

What I said about shipping kind of disqualifies some of the questions here so I'll answer the ones I can.

Consider this an answer to the question "My crack ship" if it was part of the game: You know what would be horrible but very funny to me personally? Next book Mortales rolls into town, Niles organizes a party at his manor he invites Fetch to and when Fetch comes in he sees him arm in arm with General Taryn. Boom! Turns out these two have been happily married for 20 years but living separately for business (and reputation) reasons. They met when Niles Corp was growing and Mortales bought it. It was a subsidiary company all this time! Taryn and Thurston met at the merger. Lance rolled his eyes at his little brother falling for the big strong grizzled army man (he disapproved, it's unprofessional). In the present day Fetch is foaming at the mouth, eye twitching, seizing in the entrance hall. His heart has finally given out.

Did I just write the shortest and most horrible fanfic our fandom has ever seen? Yes :P

My kink: I'd love him to get his rocks off getting choked. He's very dominant on the daily, he's a powerful man, so I think it could be fun for him to be powerless and hurt. I think he would be the kind of guy to ask his partner to go harder and harder, until they're worried.

A headcanon fact: That man is bisexual, that's my headcanon. Maybe I'm projecting, but it's obvious to me. He's just a little too off-kilter to be straight. Maybe he even turned his eye toward Sunder City because it's primarily a magum city and magum don't care about sexual orientation the way humans do. Maybe he can take a breath there. Also, I believe it would fit the nuanced moral line of the series. It can't be the good queer magum against the bad heteronormative humans. It's more complicated. Niles can be a great queer villain.

My gender bend: Niles would work so well as a woman. Are you kidding me. She would rule over Sunder in no time. And Fetch's feelings toward her would become infinitely more complicated. Favorite character: CM Punk. He's my good time boy my drama queen my toxic old man. He might not be the best pro wrestler ever (debatable) but he embodies what pro wrestling (the good and the bad) is so well. In fics, I particularly the Ring Of Honor-period Punk because he's so passionate and queer-coded. Also, the look! The bad bleaching, the chipping nail polish, the piercings the ugly shirts and baggy jeans and basketball shorts!!

Least Favorite character: Chad Gable. The American Made faction as a whole gives me the ick. It's too american and patriotic, it's all I hate. Chad also, as a heel, treats people like shit and it works on me so well I hate to see him onscreen.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): CM Punk/Samoa Joe, CM Punk/MJF for the shippy ships. The following three are not ships, just wrestlers I like to see together in the ring because they work well together: Andrade/Carmelo Hayes, Bianca Belair/Iyo Sky, Sheamus/Pete Dunne.

Character I find most attractive: Solo Sikoa. I love thick men 😍

Character I would marry: Samoa Joe. Serious, discreet, hot. A long-time worker. A safe bet!

a random thought: Is wrestling RPF? Since the wrestlers play a character and act out stories? The fact that they pretend it's all real and that they're closer to their character than actors makes it sound like RPF. It's a mindfuck.

An unpopular opinion: I'm not interested in the Bloodline-and-Cody story and I think too much time is devoted to it and not enough happens to justify all that screen time.

most badass character: Jacob Fatu. That man looks dangerous as hell.

pairing I am not a fan of: Cody/Roman. I don't see the chemistry.

character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Right now, I feel like the writing is doing a disservice to Rhea Ripley. The feud with Liv Morgan needs to evolve out of "two chicks fight because of a boy".

favourite friendship: CM Punk/Samoa Joe. Seeing them smile at each other in the ring as they punch each other, seeing Punk struggling to hold back a smile when they find each other again in AEW, the backstage photos... It looks like a wholesome friendship.

Vinyl Bay 777 shopping list, 2018.

I haven’t visited Plainview since the sordid community college days. It was when I set my best-friend Brandon up with Manzana, the girl I was set up with through one of my friends in senior year. We were over her house with some of her friends for what would be my final get-together there. It felt unusual because it was my only visit there during the community-college era and I already was far removed from everyone I was friends with, friends who helped make-then-break situations. Plainview was great for what it was worth until things started to decline.

Caboose, a former staffer of my time at Stony Brook Press, messaged me last year and announced he was a newly-enlisted music-phile. I never even thought anything else of him during our days at the Press. He then tipped me off of Vinyl Bay 777. Plainview now has a record store, but it came with a slight warning: it would be too pricey. I was meaning to go since hearing of it and it looked real good. Owned by artist and Italian chef Frank Napoli, he wanted his store to stand out and he’s succeeded. Everything of Vinyl Bay 777 looks great, a strong mission statement where everything is clean, graded accurately, and perfectly organized by alphabetical order and genre. It had a professionally-built website where it gave you part of a superbly-organized feel. It was also where I started feeling a slight crunch: I started to browse their inventory on their site and the average / median prices were set a little high. It’s not the whole story as it would take anyone hours to get a more accurate feel of what Vinyl Bay 777 had in store. It was still in the cards for me to visit any way to get the true picture.

All it took to get there was a drive down to the Long Island Expressway (L.I.E., not named after Ron Morelli’s label, regretably) and it was right off its’ closest exit. Located in an industrial area, you need to curve through some buildings to get to some tight parking lots. There it was with a double-mural painting of various iconic musicians in front of the store. I walk in and it did look amazing. It’s tight quarters, but no other record store was such efficient in space and pulled it off looing good. Rows and rows of vinyl. Even more under. Tables with crates of 12″ and 7″ on top of it. Rolling caddies of cassette bins. On the walls are collectible classic records. Shelves upon shelves of CDs. Close to any category you could think of with few exceptions, they have it. Look around and you’ll see some shelves of music-related books, documentaries, and live shows on DVD. More collectibles, vinyl records pinned to the ceiling, action figures, star-studded memorabilia, and Beanie Babies down below. At the front of the counter were magazines ranging from Boys Life to about four bins of Playboy. Hugh Hefner is turning over right now. So far, so good.

As I started browsing through the store, I slowly realized Caboose was right. The lowest common price of any title in the store was $5.77 with few lower exceptions. $7.77, $17.77, $25.77, $39.77, $12.77. Notice a pattern? They price after themselves. Inifinity Records has a few vinyl bins mixed with various titles for $2.76 and I don’t even know the significance of those numbers. It wasn’t the $__.77 that got to me, it was indeed the overall pricing. They priced their stock higher than any other store I seen. Records, cassettes, and discs priced for only a few dollars in other stores were priced two, three, even four times at Vinyl Bay. That went for most of their stock regardless, no artist or genre was treated differently. You could walk away with several hardcore and punk 45′s for a dollar or two somewhere else. Not Vinyl Bay. The entire small shelf of those 45′s were priced enough that it prevented me from taking some of it home. Cassettes were selling for mostly $5.77 to $7.77 where other places still selling them do so for a few dollars less. Ouch.

Even though I still felt the pinch, I still continued to walk through its stock. They had a great selection of jazz, rock, hip-hop, industrial, metal, the classics, and etcetera across all formats. I did have ideas of what I wanted to pick up, and that’s all that became of my visit. I couldn’t help but to hold back because I have had about 15 or 20 titles I wanted to buy, but Vinyl Bay 777′s pricing add up quickly in my head. There were no dollar bins as their grading system and overall aesthetic prevented it, which I do understand. Vinyl Bay 777 vied to be different and it does. It does so by offering a lot of rarites, obscure, and hard-to-find titles not found often and at high-quality. They don’t sell “Dean Martin, Barbra Streisand, Mitch Miller, Andy Williams or showtunes…big band, film scores, or soundtracks.” They sell top-notch titles. It’s for collectors, not for pick-up-and-go artists like myself. I can’t blame them.

It’s a shame, really, because they do have lots of great stuff and they do aim for quality. That’s something Vinyl Bay will bat all the way to home plate. I do understand if a store prices specific titles accordingly by rarity and condition here and there. Because Vinyl Bay is for connoiseurs. They do take their rarity and grading 100% which explains why the average threshold of pricing is higher than most stores. On my end, I didn’t feel any bit accessible. I shop to win, not shop for only one or two things.  I don’t shop according to grade or condition, I shop for quantity and value. I do have the money the spend, but it doesn’t mean I’d want to needlessly overpay on titles I could find in other places for half the price. But I have to say, at least they have integrity. They weren’t the Long Island Vinyl Exchange years ago where half their stock was un-priced and their owner made you pay whatever he said off the top of his head. He was out in less than a year. Remember that.

After 45 minutes, I left Vinyl Bay 777 purchasing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great store for those who want it and they do a great job for what they’re set out to do. It’s just not for me. As I walked out, I noticed a sign urging customers to write two reviews on different social media accounts and show them to the store for a 15% discount. Too little, too late. Here’s my review. I’m not coming back.

Wow. I’m not even sure if my response to this will be coherent because it has thrown me to that extent. I know you to be pretty incredible meta observer..so the idea that any of my ramblings have influenced you in such a way as to have formed them at all is…lol. What!?! What even. My thoughts are absolutely subjective and probably? Maybe? Not incredibly popular but they are my own, authentically 100%. I use…used…writing as a way of healing the sore spots, if you will, that I had over watching and rewatching the show over 30 years. So many questions. Undeveloped character theory I guess. Also a way of filling in plot gaps that my psyche physically needed. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed them. I’m so humbled that they’ve inspired you? maybe? I miss writing. I hope to get back to it someday. The story of Mulder and Scully and its pieces, its eventual, hopeful resolution, is so incredibly important to me in a way that is almost tantamount to my mental health. That sounds pathetic 😂. But its a truth of mine. Not one I share lightly. I love them -and their story-deeply. Anything you’ve read of mine was something I needed to read. And so I wrote. And if it’s done something for you as well on this insanely and uniquely phile-relatable journey of being a TXF fan, then truly, I am humbled. Magneticus. Its funny you mention that one. The scene in Pusher where Mulder is kneeling in front of Scully inspired that one. His grin. Thats one that I can trace back the source for you. Writing is funny that way. Odd little moments blooming into theory. Luctus is still my longest fic to date (I’m a drabble queen) and quite possibly my favorite or first runner up. I needed that one. For my own mental rest. In any case, thank you eternally for this ask. I cannot express it adequately. To have somehow contributed in a meaningful way to this fandom, to its thoughts and ideas, means so much to me.

Respectfully, this take makes no sense. Are you basing your idea of BTS on the three english singles they’ve released in their 10 year career? If so, then I can understand how you might come to the “soulless pop” conclusion, but you are leaving out 99.9% of their actual work in saying that, making your point invalid. Also, I severely disagree with you using BTS specifically to make the point about music nowadays being “all about numbers”. A much better example of this would be the rise in tiktok songs which are solely designed to be promoted on tiktok and get 30 second clips played on the platform for views. BTS fans only work so hard for streams because in the beginning, BTS weren’t recognized. They were cut out of performance shows, their performances were blacked out by fans of other groups to make it seem like they were performing to empty audiences, they purposefully trended other artists to make any attempt BTS made at promoting their music unsuccessful, and routinely called into KOREAN award shows to dispute results or argue against them winning anything. This isn’t even taking into account the fact that while BTS have a significant western following and have since the start, they’ve only really gotten tangible recognition from the western music industry recently. Even when they were first becoming popular their main recognition here was by numbers (albums sold leading to their positions on the billboard charts) or solely for online influence because of their fans (top social artist awards) and not to do with their music. Even now a lot of the awards they win in America are based on the fact they’re Korean and not due to their actual music. (i.e. only being nominated in “best k-pop artist” category rather than for anything related to the actual music they put out). 

Also, to your point about cultural appropriation- I want to ask, can you point to specific examples? I’m more than willing to have a dialogue about this issue because it’s obviously nuanced and I’m never going to think I am 100% correct about it but I’d like to hear where you’re coming from. Is it the clothes? Is it because they rap? I’d like to ask what you’d have them do instead. They have routinely paid homage to the black culture they take their musical style from and never shy away from hip hop and raps roots. In fact during their early years they had a whole series about going to LA and learning about hip hop culture from real hip hop legends like Coolio to become further educated on where the style originates. They have an entire song dedicated to them loving hip hop and naming black hip hop artists where they got inspiration and who they admire (it’s called hip hop phile). Would you have them stop rapping or stop making hip hop? Would you have them stop delving into soul? If that’s the case would you have every non-black artist stop making soul or RnB or hip hop music? These are genuine questions. I just don’t understand where you are drawing the line. Where is your line between appropriation and appreciation? Is any non-black artist who delves into these genres only bad if they become famous because of it?

Also take issue with your comment about how no one can sing because they’re fitting into corsets or whatever. Have you listened to actual clips of BTS singing live without backing tracks? Of course everyone has their own opinion but they are FAR from objectively bad singers. (Jungkook actually appeared on the korean version of masked singer and almost won. I understand that’s one member of 7 and he’s the main vocalist but to say they all can’t sing is incorrect, and even though the other vocal members don’t have those accolades they are still quite talented.)

To me your take seems severely misinformed, it seems like you are assuming A LOT about BTS based on your own opinions about “new” k-pop (again, BTS aren’t really “new” and are only a year younger than the group you seem to be a fan of. If a decade old is new then we have very different time barometers. LOL.). It seems like a lot of your take is rooted in the notion that BTS came from a “k-pop factory” (which in itself that idea is a bit. well. it’s not a KIND take to put on the korean pop music industry and singling out BTS while not mentioning any new american pop is crazy to me sorry) when they in fact came from an indie label and the only reason anyone knows who their company is now is BECAUSE of BTS. BTS saved their small company from bankruptcy by singing about themes their target demographic in korea (teenagers at the time, because THEY were teenagers) actually cared about (being pressured by the adults in your life to have a “dream” even though no one knows what they want at that age, the rigid school system present in their country- in general their theme as a debut idol group was essentially “stick it to the man” which isn’t a very mainstream premise and definitely wasn’t back then. no mainstream pop or idol group was singing songs like that.) and created a following and then continued to change and grow their message to speak to their audience as both they and their audience aged. To say they are bad just because they became incredibly popular discredits their artistry and frankly discredits many artists who have found fame.

Penelope stands out, because she rebelled to the shackells not only of being a woman, but being a Featherington. PLUS whistledown, or the real society papers were mostly read by middle to lower class and they were to provide entrteniment to the average commoner.

I did a browse of Tumblr "Audiophile".

OK weird.

Much of the stuff is photos of old stuff from brochures and magazines (like paper OMG). I guess some people kept all that stuff. Grandpa was a hoarder of audio mags? I see lovely ads for crap product. It was crap 60 years ago and still is today (like the BOSE 901). There are some bits showing good stuff but not much. And there are the confused people who don't understand obsession with vacuum tubes and LP records.

There are links to very artistic audio themed soft-core porn. Some are adds for console stereos draped with girls in lingerie. A good stereo will bring the girls in for sure. At least that was thought in the 60s? And there are people posing as golden ears. Some experts might be expert, but you gotta pay the bills no matter the crap information they put out. Number ten in this guy's top ten turntable list is pure crap now and forever.

I have even seen totally phony photo-shopped systems that I know could never exist. You know a turntable has to be at least a bit more than 12" across to fit an LP which is 12 inches in diameter. So that picture just don't scale right.

I guess in summary it is not much fun to look at that tag as there is so much dross.

If you are an audiophile then you probably know good from bad or want to. If you are just interested or new to this then there is a problem. There is a hell of a lot of misinformation conspiracy and noise.

First problem is the term audiophile. It means literally you love sound. The presumption is you appreciate the quality of sound. That is different than liking music in general, or some specific type of music. That would be a musicophile. All it takes is adding -phile to the end of a word.

So if you like music as opposed to just the sound of steam locomotives passing by and care for good clean sound then you are bumping up against this other -phile thing. Do not be intimidated. I assure you that listening to a favorite artist with all the sounds fully resolved and blasting away in your home is a good thing.

It is strange to me that people will spend a small fortune on a sound system for their car and far less in their home. Though I suppose if you live in an apartment loud music will make no friends, but being a big bass thumper in traffic is OK and even expected. Hey if you love that sound well sorry to tell you... yup audiophile.

Now to cost. There can be a lot of money spent. Some people will spend six figures restoring a car from when they were young. It is a hobby where it is possible to spend gobs of money. And there are many people, and companies who will help you spend your money.

You can spend much less and get good results. My equipment has only two relatively new things in it. One Phono Cartridge, and one vacuum tube. All the rest of the electronics are decades old. My speakers are a few years old but I built those as I know best. The cost has been interesting. By selling off older even collectable stuff I have spent effectively no money over the past 7 or 8 years. Yes I bought that stuff once long ago, but economically it was sunk money.

I have the advantage of experience and know the good stuff from the less good. I know what brands to look for. I also know which products have cults around them that blur the flaws. I call myself a "cheap audiophile" as I will not spend more than low four figures on anything. The most expensive thing I ever bought was under 2k bucks. Most was far less than that.

One of the links the tag search brought up was guy who did not understand why anyone would buy Vinyl Records. The equipment is expensive and the media is less available than digital streams. There was one reply about the tangible nature of an album and actually owning a thing rather than just being allowed to access it. I will go further.

I have avoided high end streaming because of cost and complexity. To get good sound out of numbers you need several lumps and most are expensive. You need a computer or a server that is logged into a provider like "tidal" or "qobuz" or "apple music". Then you need a device that can store the bits on a drive either an SSD or even a spinning magnetic disc to avoid drop outs that can be the music server, but not the computer. Then you need a DAC to convert the particular stream to analog sound which is finally fed into your audio system proper. Aside from the subscription (I have apple music) you need three lumps that each cost more than a good turntable if you want audiophile sound.

In order to add a high end streaming line to my system would cost more than the replacement cost of my system as it is right now. So I have a low end solution. I plug my Iphone into my CD player with a nice-ish DAC in it. It is OK sound. But I swear if I play an LP of the same music after hearing it off my iphone to CD quality there is no comparison the LP is better.

And yes when it comes to vacuum tubes I vacillate. They are expensive and wear out. They sound nice. They have more distortion and artifacts than solid state, but it is nice sounding distortion. A big part of this hobby skews preferences to nice sounding distortion. Vacuum tubes and moving coil phono cartridges are prime examples.

My most recent experience was going from a full vacuum tube preamplifer to a hybrid with only one tube. The sound was rich and deep and involving before. Yummy like a good sticky baklava dripping with honey. Now it is detailed and frankly palpable. I can hear a singer part their lips before a phrase. You have to hear that to appreciate it.

I have been recently been tempted with two vacuum tube unicorn amplifiers for a very good price for that type of device. That price is double what a competitive solid state amplifier would be. And like I say at the local pub after my fourth beer, I want another but I don't need another. I am seriously tempted. I have a nascent love for the sound I know is in them. They have a voice and it is good. Actually this is a key aspect of the hobby. It is an emotional response to something. It is irrational.
