....lmfao.  So I figure I should give some advise to anyone who has had past issues with delinquent payments and collection agencies based on my own prior experiences and hardships. 1. Depending on your state laws, if the debt is older that 7 years and you have not payed anything against it in that time frame, technically you are no longer responsible for the debt and you can tell them to stick it. (Check your state laws, the time frame is different per state.) 2. YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DEBT BUT YOUR OWN. Do not co-sign for anything unless you feel comfortable that the other person WILL pay their debt. Your parents, sibling, significant other, friend, child croaks? Oh fucking well, sucks to be them because it’s not YOUR problem 3. If you get into a bad situation, call the company you’re in debt to. Trust me when I say that no matter how difficult it is, they will appreciate someone reaching out and letting them know what the situation is and when they can expect resolution. Set up some kind of payment plan if you can, or if you can’t, confirm when they can start receiving payments again. (Most debtors understand that suing someone with zero assets and no job is a waste of time. If you can prove that you are actively working to better your situation and provide updates, they are more willing to put a hold on your account and release it when you can start making payments again.) Yes, it WILL be embarrassing. Yes, it WILL be highly uncomfortable. If they harass you after that (calling multiple times per day, at your place of work, at oddball hours, you are well within your rights to report them and/or file a civil suit.) 5a. When you do talk to them, stay calm. Do NOT fly off the handle or break down. Ask them to send you a NOTARIZED copy of debt, and provide them with a good address for them to mail it to. Then, after you have reviewed the debt, googled the company that is trying to collect on it, and verified that everything looks legit, call them back or register online to verify your options. A lot of debt collectors will offer discounts on the debt if you make a payment plan by a certain date. 

5b. DO NOT GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE UNTIL YOU HAVE THE NOTARIZED COPY OF THE DEBT AND HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE COMPANY IS LEGIT. I cannot stress this enough. Scammers are sometimes clever, and will milk you for everything you have if you let them. They will use scare tactics. They will threaten litigation. They will mention jail time. They will demand immediate payment or down payment before they will send you anything. All of these are bluffs. A legitimate debt collector will be more than happy to send you the information for you to verify before you commit to anything.  6. Keep records of EVERYTHING. Receipts of successful payments. Notification that the debt collector considers the debt paid. Etc. Keep it all. Because I guarantee you you’re going to get a call from another collector about the debt, but having proof that you’ve already paid it in full goes a long way in getting them off your back about it.

7. And most important, depending on your state laws, if someone threatens litigation, call their bluff. Tell them to go ahead and serve you. 99.99999% of the time, they will immediately hang up or they will give you some bull-shit excuse about having already tried. In almost every state,  after the plaintiff files a claim with the small claims clerk, he or she must deliver a copy of the claim to each defendant. This is called service of process, and no lawsuit is complete without it. Usually you are required to sign that you have received. If you have not signed, they cannot prove that they served you, thus they cannot legally sue you. They also cannot sue you without having first attempted to resolve the debt, and if they cannot prove that they have attempted to do so, they are bluffing about suing you. + added side note: If you can afford to pay down extra on your debt before it gets sold to a collector or before it becomes past due, do it. This list is non-exhaustive but it's a good start and I'll link some pdfs and websites I think resume well the actions you can take to have a better internet hygiene. I'll list them under the cut.

So tips on how to protect yourself online here we go!

We know we're annoyed when a website asks us to have a password with at least 10 characters, one capital letter, one punctuation, etc. but it's actually for a reason. Your password is the first safeguard to your account. Don't make it easy to crack.

Try and use an different password for everything. Note it in a physical notebook if you have to, or use passwords managers online (but don't stock them all on the same). Downside though, they can be expensive.

Multifactor authetification. Activate it if you can. You'll get used to it.

Compartementalizing. Have multiple email adresses for different purposes. This way, if one is compromised, you don't lose everything. However, this is only efficient if you have different passwords for everything. If you have the same password for all, then it loses its purpose

Log off your social medias after using them. Log off everything when you're done using them. Lock your computer after you're done using it. It's annoying, we're used to have everything quick, but again, don't make it easy for people with bad intentions to access your stuff.

If you are dealing with important documents, back them up every night on an external drive AND on a cloud. This way, if you catch a ransomware that asks for money in return of your documents, you still have your stuff and you won't get extorted.

Public wifi are never safe. Ask yourself, do you really need to check your bank account in Starbucks? Do you really need to make that credit card payment now? Lower the chances of having your info stlen by not waving them around. Wait for a personal and secure network to do it.

VPNs are good but you shouldn't rely 100% on them to secure your stuff. You don't know which IP you're borrowing. If you do have a VPN, shop for it. Don't take the first one you see. I personally use the bitdefender one but I don't use it for sensitive matters.

Please please please don't watch adult stuff on your work computer. It's a gateway to viruses and malwares and also prime blackmail material.

In the same vein, don't bring work material on home computers if you are not explicitely allowed to. Because that's data stealing. And if that data is corrupted on your home computer, you'll be in trouble

Y'all have probably received a lot of fraudulent emails by now, like saying there's a federal warrant against you for [insert terrible crime here]. Once upon a time they were super easy to rule out because they were terribly written, but they're getting smarter about that. So here's what to look out for:

They will not be adressing you by name

There WILL be a time aspect, they'll make it seem like it's urgent or give you a deadline to pressure you

They'll want you to click a link (don't click it)

There won't be a phone number or office address (ways to verify they're legit)

In doubt, search the actual phone number of the agency they're claiming to be and verify by yourself (lots of countries have anti fraud centers, you can ask them too)

Talking about fishy, if you're talking to someone you know and they ask you for money in an unusual way, give them a call to verify. There's a hacking technique called harpooning, in which a third party intercepts your communications and modify it. So you might not be talking to your friend or colleague.

Do your computer updates. It's not just giving you new features it's also updating firewalls and operating systems against known vulnerabilities. The more updates you skip, the more your computer becomes a sitting duck ready to be exploited

Your antivirus is not an impenetrable wall. Sometimes good malwares slips under its detection. Good indications you've been infected is slower internet than usual and battery draining faster than usual. (malware working and using your processor capabilities)

Not all viruses and malware will leave with a powerwash. It has been seen that the whole computer had to be decommissionned (which is also why you should back up your data)

Cookies will track your activity. Install Privacy Badger. It's great! They'll explain to you step by step what they're doing and why. They're very transparent which I really like.

Adblock too. I use Ublock origin.

If you can, avoid Chrome. They're horrible pivacy wise. Firefox is a much better option.

Read the privacy policy of the websites you use. No really. Actually do it. Know what you agreed about.

Disable your bluetooth and GPS if you're not using them. Not only will you save battery but you will limit entry point to your device

Avoid posting personal information online. This one should be obvious but it's not apparently. Everything can be used for doxxing or blackmail.

Obviously there is many more thing you can do, those are just really the basics. I know it might seem like a lot, but incorporating them in your routine will make it automatic overtime and save you lots of stress. Here's some ressources you can check out:

For those still in school: ask your IT department about cyber security measures and ressources. More and more colleges are starting to include mandatory formations on cyber security after a wave of attacks that targeted university systems and network worldwide

Your country's governement website probably has a section about cybersecurity and the laws framing it. Go check it out to learn about what you can do if you're victim to a cyber attack and which authorities are competent to handle it

So to answer this I’ll go with our own customs and say that no, I don’t know of anyone who has the same middle name as me. It’s not a very common surname anyway.

What did you have done the last time you saw a dentist? Had a tooth removed. I don’t think it was a wisdom tooth; it was just a tooth at the back of my mouth that had been in pretty bad shape for years but was only discovered at that time.

What does a successful relationship look like to you? I believe the formula is different for every couple. Like I value constant communication and checkups, but others might not feel the need to be clingy or update their significant others all the time.

What kinds of decorations do you put up at Halloween? My family has never cared much for Halloween. It’s not even a legit holiday, so as much as I love Halloween I don’t think I would spend for decorations myself to decorate my own place. An Old Opinion Research Essay

Made this last school year. It’s about MLMs (Multi-level Marketing) and why I think they should be illegal

Thousands of dollars. You don’t make thousands, you pay thousands. You don’t sell thousands, you recruit thousands. You don’t get paid to work, you pay to work. Welcome to MLMs, the most unethical world of business where everything is a scam. It deserves to be banned, gone from the reach of the people who run them. For the safety of the workers. 

MLMs- Multi-level Marketing- companies pop up a lot in the modern day. Have you ever gotten a Facebook message from somebody, likely with an eye bleeding amount of emojis, claiming to know you from somewhere pitching a product? That’s an MLM worker, no doubt. While most see them as annoying at worst, these companies that these workers come from have been proven, as from testimony by former workers, the FTC, and multiple state lawsuits, to have destroyed finances, careers, friendships, and lives while breaking the law. Many have been accused of or been charged with illegal activity- operating a pyramid scheme. 

Any amount of research will bring up how horrible some companies can get. Being repulsed at the practices is one thing, but how do we prevent them from harming workers? I argue a full ban on the practice. With already tight regulations and monitoring by the FTC, MLMs are in hot water. Still, illegal pyramid schemes manage to bypass the law and operate until it’s too late (hello Advocare, like your lawsuit?). The best way to deal with MLMs is simply banning the practice.

Bans may not be the best, but they can be necessary. Prepare to feel a mix of shame, disguise, anger, and bitter hopelessness for humanity.

Corporate can be a dictator. Many people, including former workers, heavily argue the point that many MLMs are morally and legally wrong. They have no base pay and hide under a “make as much as you want” claim. In reality, workers buy products from the company to sell to consumers, and when they don’t sell, often due to the terrible quality and horrible company reputation, they are essentially being paid under minimum wage with negative wage counts! Financial reports show that, during a year in an MLM, the majority percent of employees lost money, some broke even with joining packages and product costs (which cost thousands of dollars), and less than 5% made money, and less than 1% reached or exceeded the annual national minimum wage ($15,080)

In addition, workers who quit MLMs are often shamed by supervisors and friends still in the company. They get harassed online through texts and Facebook for breaking free. Friendships are broken in split seconds. Lives are left fragments of what they once were. Families fight and argue and refuse to communicate with each other due to associating with these companies. A video by Vice News, which is highly recommended to watch, tells the stories of women who have left MLMs and the shame that was placed on them. In addition to their terrible financial situation, it documents how much shame was put on these women who are left friendless, leaving friends for the company and leaving the company with fake “friends”. MLM workers are encouraged to sell to family and friends, and one worker has stated that “every conversation turned into a sales pitch”. Any human would leave a friend who did that.

On the other hand, people argue that MLM products are legit and that they are perfectly legal and not pyramid schemes. They say that, without legal action, MLMs are fine to operate. They argue that a pyramid scheme is a solid definition that requires many boxes to be checked, and that MLMs don’t check enough. They may call them “Anti-pyramids”, which is a funnel and shows more on the top than the bottom and the money still goes to the one guy on the bottom and that’s still a horrible business model for a dozen reasons, but that’s beyond the point. These could have good backing to them.
