Biscuit Reviews Final Fantasy VII Remake

For many people Final Fantasy VII was a gateway to the JRPG genre and the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy VII was actually the second game in the series I played and I loved this just as much as Final Fantasy VIII. In fact, I used to have a Spring Break tradition when I was in high school where I would play Final Fantasy VII from start to finish. The original Final Fantasy VII hasn’t aged well in the visual department, but the gameplay is still really solid. The Materia system is still regarded as one of the best advancement systems in any RPG, and its influence is still felt today in many titles. I still remember 15 years ago when the PS3 tech demo came out showing the newly remade intro to Final Fantasy VII and like many, I too wondered if this was the beginning of a remake of the game.

Square Enix would deny this saying it was just a demo of the PS3 capabilities and rather than remake the game, they decided to expand on Final Fantasy VII, with a movie (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children), a mobile game (Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII), a PS2 third person shooter (Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus), and a PSP Prequel (Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core). All these entries were not great, with the exception of Crisis Core, which followed SOLDIER Zack Fair and how he kickstarted the events that occured in Final Fantasy VII.

Like many fans, I too entered the Final Fantasy VII Remake with extreme caution. My main worry wasn’t if content would change, but rather if everyone’s personality would mirror Advent Children. That was my biggest concern because Advent Children really brought down the cast quite a bit. Needless to say, they more or less kept in line with how they were originally portrayed in the original game with some extra moments where they all shine.

I want to first mention that as you probably know that the Remake only covers the Midgar section of the original story, which consisted of five in-game hours of the original. I do also want to mention that there will be some spoilers, but I won’t be spoiling the new things in the Remake, but rather spoiling the instances that the Remake shares with the original. I will have a spoiler discussion at the end which will be marked by the “Keep Reading” cut. Final Fantasy VII Remake will follow a episodic release and I have to say, Square missed the opportunity to call this Final Fantasy VII Remake: Disc 1. Then again, maybe that could have potentially caused confusion towards potential new fans.

You are Cloud Strife, an EX-SOLDIER and mercenary hired by AVALANCHE to assist them in their mission to take down the Shinra Corporation. Cloud will meet various allies to help on his journey that include: Barret, the leader of AVALANCHE, Tifa, a bar owner and member of AVALANCHE, and Aerith, a flower girl from the Sector 5 Slums.

Many classic characters get expanded upon as well. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie get backstories and more personality. Biggs is just a big softie, Wedge’s personality is food, and Jessie’s personality is sexual harassment. I tried reporting her to AVALANCHE’s HR, but there wasn’t one and Barret wouldn’t listen to me, so Cloud just had to deal I guess.

For fans of the original, all the classic moments are still here. The Sector 1 attack, the Airbuster fight, Cloud in drag, all those moments are still present in this Remake. All of those moments are also really beautiful looking and even expanded upon in great ways that honor the original. They will definitely make fans of the original Final Fantasy VII just pause and admire the upgraded look of everything.

There were some places that got expanded upon for the sake of padding, but honestly it didn’t really much bother me, but to me it meant fighting in the newly upgraded ATB battle system.

The combat is the perfect evolution of the ATB battle system. You can attack and defend at will, but if you want to use special attacks, magic, or items, you have to let the ATB meter charge and fill up to use those commands. When you open the command menu, time slows down to give you a moment to find the command you want. You can even switch characters in the middle of battle to give them their own commands or even play as them during the fight.

I also love how some fights you have to really strategize how you’re going to handle the encounter. Staying as just one character isn’t going to cut it in some fights and there are some moments where you will have to take control of another character because they're better suited for that battle. You’ll also have to make sure go in with the proper Materia to expose weaknesses to gain the upper hand. Some of these fights are really hard and you’ll get pulverized for going in them ill-prepared and that’s just on the Normal difficulty.

The Materia system still works the same as it did with the original. You upgrade your materia by completing battles. However, now you can upgrade your weapons for additional stat boosts. Each weapon also has a weapon ability that you can learn. Once the ability is known, you can use that ability even if you have a different weapon equipped. You know how I mentioned earlier that having the proper Materia will help in a fight. Even though it’s not so much the case for weapons, there are 1 or 2 boss fight that you might want to consider switching weapons around for your characters.

Now, what about the other mode that Square advertised, Classic Mode, is that closer to the turn-based style from the original? No it’s not, in fact it’s Super Easy mode where attacking and defending happens automatically and you only worry about the commands, but even then you don’t have to bother much with commands as the game plays itself mostly. Don’t take this as me shaming anyone for playing this mode, if you want to play it on Classic, more power to you, but I also don’t want someone seeing it and thinking that the mode is something that it’s not.

Even though this game is a Remake, it doesn’t in any way erase the original game. The original Final Fantasy VII will always be there and it’s still worth giving it a look today if you’re curious about the rest of the story.

Now, I’m about to enter spoiler territory as there are moments that I do want to further discuss, so if you don’t want spoilers, I’ll give my score here and have the spoilers in the cut. Only go to the cut if you’ve played the game or don’t mind spoilers at all.

Final Fantasy VII Remake gets a 5 out of 5

Ok, Story Spoiler Discussion Time!

I have to say, I’m actually a big fan of the ending. I’ll admit when Sephiroth was introduced in Chapter 2, I was concerned that Square sped it up for the sake of the fans. When Barret was saved by Fate, I was concerned that it was just going to be a stupid plot device to make sure certain characters lived.

Then the final chapter happened and everything made sense in a weird way.

The fact that this is the same Sephiroth we’ve known since the original game, the fact that the Remake is actually a Sequel and what we experienced in the Remake was actually an alternative universe is something that I have to admit was a very risky gamble and I think it paid off. What happens next is unknown and now that anything can happen since this is actually a continuation of Sephiroth’s story occurring in an alternative universe, it opens a lot of possibilities and I’m excited to see what happens next!

I’m excited to learn more about how he got to this universe. Will the Prime Universe try to find ways to the alternate universe to continue to fight Sephiroth? Did fighting Fate alter the timeline of the alternate universe we’re experiencing. If anything, I think this was the best way to preserve the original, do a retelling of original events, alter them a little and then reveal that it’s an alternative universe that the original game has influences on. It also still makes the original important as it lets you see and experience how Sephiroth got to this point. It’s like the 2009 Star Trek movie and I have to say, I thought that was handled well.

Also, this hasn’t been confirmed by anyone in Square but I think Fate was a representation of the fans. Think about it, Fate was doing everything it could to make sure certain events played out exactly the same as they did before. Which is what the fans wanted in a Final Fantasy VII Remake, the same game, just prettier and modernized. With you fighting and killing Fate, I think it was Square’s way of showing what their thoughts on this was. They didn’t want to rehash the same story, they wanted to tell a new story. So by having Fate die, it showed that Square is going to do something new, but the fact that certain events still played out the same, also shows that Square will keep some of them, but at the end of the day, this is a new story.

However, with that said, I still have concerns about the upcoming sequels to this game. Particularly, Tetsuya Nomura’s very recent quote that the team doesn’t know how many more sequels there will be and is in favor of doing smaller chunks of the original story. This concerns me that the continuation of this new arc of Final Fantasy VII’s story will go in the route of Kingdom Hearts. The first couple games will be great and amazing, and then it will start going downhill because Nomura will get bored, stop caring, and will start doing things because he thinks it’s cool.

There is some great potential and I hope that what happens next continues to pay off.

Colors TV Falls Pray To Their Own Biases

Date: February 13, 2023

It all began with Bigg Boss Season 12 when Dipika Kakkar was crowned instead of Sreesanth followed by Bigg Boss Season 13 where Sidharth Shukla was declared the winner instead of Shehnaaz Kaur Gill or Asim Riaz, Season 14 had Rubina Dilaik walking away with the trophy instead of Rahul Vaidya or Nikki Tamboli and finally Bigg Boss Season 15 saw Tejasswi Prakash clinching the trophy instead of a much deserving Pratik Sehajpal.

It was seemingly clear that Colors was playing favourites and winner of this reality show was always their face. Most of tue viewers online expressed their discomfort towards the way things used to pan out of the show and it was almost certain that the makers played favourites and. Infact Rubina in a recent interview had even mentioned that the show is very well scripted.

Will all this negative publicity going on, Bigg Boss Season 15 hit rock bottom. However, for Colors, there was a lot riding in Season 16 and that’s the reason they decided to involve Bigg Boss in the entire process, which clearly meant that the ultimate control was with the channel itself. They could manipulated the show they way the wanted to.

Bigg Boss Season 16 was lopsided from the word go. Followed are some of my observations:

1. Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia was given a clear advantage when she was crowned as the first captain of the house as she entered the house first. Something that was a move by the channel

2. Every time Sajid Khan was nominated, there are NO Eliminations. Sajid was never eventually, but left the show due to PRIOR COMMITMENTS

3. Surprisingly neither Sajid Khan nor MC Stan were never reprimanded by Bigg Boss as they were never actively involved in most of the tasks. Infact, in one of the tasks, Abdu Rozik did all that he could knowing very well that he had a physical disadvantage, while Sajid and MC sat in one corner protesting. Sad, but true

4. Ankit Gupta was so right when he said that all the tasks were surrounded around food. Also, the fact that the makers had to give them then basic food, irrespective of the task, something that most of the housemates were very well aware off and that’s why did not give their hundred percent

5. Eliminations happened as per the continence of the channel. They consider the votes when they wanted to, and when the need be, asked the housemates or a selected few to eliminate a housemate, which was so very lopsided

6. MC Stan never participated in any of the activities that the celebrities asked them to be a part of. Infact when Jannat Zubair had asked all of them to make a reel with her, MC Sir quietly stood in on corner

7. For the first time, the makers were openly calling housemates in the confession room and indirectly telling them who they should nominate

8. A Parent is more powerful than anyone in the world. So Sumbul Touqeer Khan’s father actually had held the channel on gun point, made the makers wait till he finished saying what he had to and made them telecast the phone call as well

Coming to the winner of this season, Shiv Thakare, Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia and Priyanka Chahar Choudhary were the front runners, but sadly they were all Faces Of Colours!!

From here on started their dilemma. If Shiv, Nimrit or Priyanka would have lifted the trophy, though this time all three were deserving, then the channel would have had to face a lot of music of being biased. So from here on started their permutations combinations.

The channel pushed Nimrat almost up to the finale, but with all the negative publicity, they evicted her with a handful of audience that went in to vote. Priyanka Chahar Choudhary was a clear winner this season, but was pushed out at the last minute. Now it was Shiv who was left.

The channel could not have anyways make him the winner as he has already won Bigg Boss Marathi Season 02 and was once again a channel face. So here it was MC Stan who was handed over the trophy in the hope that viewers would seemingly thing this one to be FAIR!!

If I was given a chance, then this year Abdu Rozik should have been the winner as he was the only housemate who was fair, played with all his heart and had a very clear understanding even though he had an huge language barrier.

Just An Innocent Question: if the voting lines were shut at 02:00 pm, how come the makers, who knew the winner almost twelve hours in advance, never had the time to print a simple name on the cheque that’s normally handed over to the winner!!

All in all, Colors TV fell pray to the own bias as this year, because unlike the previous seasons, this year a deserving Colours face was a clear winner!!

Winning or losing does not matter, but fair play does!!

Now that Rashami Desai has entered Bigg Boss 15. Umar Riaz I believe is thinking, that he can get off from Karan Kundrra's shadow and do whatever he wanted to now, freely. Without being bashed or jugded from people who loves Karan Kundrra and is being his fan from a very long time.

Rashami Desai herself is a known face of our entertainment industry and is entertaining Indian audiences for a very long time. She has come a long way, just like Karan Kundrra.

Rashami Desai being a contestant in Bigg Boss with his younger brother; Asim Riaz in season 13, knew Umar Riaz too.

They all used to party tgt. In fact some fans had also given Umar Riaz and Rashami Desai, a ship name. Though many of Asim Riaz's close friends has mentioned it that they both never had a scene. Umar Riaz just used to party with Asim Riaz and his Bigg Boss pals after the show ended.

Doc Umar Riaz being an experienced doctor, just stepped in the world of entertainment industry. He too holds a huge fan following. Being Asim Riaz's brother and a good human being but.. My friend! Every industry be it entertainment or.. some other, asks u to have talent, desire to work your ass off and HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF CONTACTS.

I wrote 'have a good amount of contacts' in all caps because it is what it is. Some people can ridicule it or have a debate on this but if u don't know people in a particular field and have good relations with them. Your hard work and your talent won't do u any good.

Having good amount of contacts doesn't mean you've to b 'Yes Sir' guy only. It also means that you should respect one and all and b let your brains b in the right place and not in your ankle.

My sincere apologies if I'm going out of context but doc Umar Riaz I believe should be a little patient with Tejasswi Prakash and considerate enough to understand that he can't just let go a friendship with Karan Kundrra which is quite evident these days. He even yelled at him for no reason.

Umar Riaz like I said should also b considerate that whatever Tejasswi is doing, right or wrong doesn't matter. He should not yell at her in public because she at the end of the day is Karan Kundrra's supposedly girlfriend and he should respect it.

The story follows the lives of Khushi Kumari Gupta, middle-class girl from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and Arnav Singh Raizada, a wealthy business tycoon rendered cold and ruthless after losing his mother and father to suicide. They first meet at a botched fashion show of the latter's, where he mistakenly thinks Khushi as having been sent to sabotage his event. Inclined to ruin her reputation, he creates rumors of a false affair brewing between them, putting the Guptas (Khushi's adoptive family) in a situation where they are left with no choice but to move away to Delhi to live with the girl's aunt, Bua ji.

After a series of misunderstandings, Khushi finds herself hired by Arnav's sister Anjali as an ethics instructor for his then live-in girlfriend, Lavanya Kashyap. In the process, and much to his chagrin, Khushi bravely challenges Arnav's stubborn ideologies on god, love, death and marriage.

With much of her time being spent in proximity with the Raizada family, hatred soon begins to turn into attraction between the two. Trying to ignore their feelings for one another, Arnav announces his engagement to Lavanya and Khushi's family gets her engaged to a paying guest living with them. It turns out that the paying guest is actually Shyam Jha, Arnav's brother-in-law, who is already married and has been lying to Khushi and her family.

Khushi is asked to organize Lavanya & Arnav's engagement party. A series of events lead Lavanya to realise that Arnav is in love with Khushi & she breaks off her engagement. Khushi's sister, Payal, gets engaged to Arnav's cousin brother, Akash. The Guptas soon learn that Shyam is the son-in-law of the Raizada family & kick him out of their house. They keep this from the Raizadas as they don't want Payal's wedding to stop. Shyam's true intentions are revealed as he repeatedly tries to kill his wife Anjali so he can be with Khushi. Khushi makes friends with NK (short for Nanda Kishore), Arnav's cousin brother from Australia. Khushi and Arnav keep challenging each other during the rituals of the marriage. The both of them slowly start realising their feelings for each other. Nani, and Arnav's sister, Anjali, see that something is going on in between them and try to play matchmaker for Khushi & Arnav.

When finally Arnav realizes his feelings, a misconception leads Arnav to believe that Shyam & Khushi have been having an affair and Khushi is the one trapping Shyam. At Akash & Payal's wedding, Arnav blackmails Khushi to marry him for six months to make Shyam think that she moved on and keep him from divorcing his sister. At the end of the wedding celebration, both their families find out that they got married without their consent & Khushi's family disowns her.

Khushi has a terrible start to her married life: everyone is angry with her & Arnav tells her to sleep outside the room. She is later forgiven at the Holi festival by the family and Arnav all but confesses his feelings under influence of bhang to an unconscious Khushi. He has also started feeling that she wasn't really involved with Shyam and there's more he doesn't know. Shyam is furious and arranges Arnav's abduction but Khushi rescues him. After coming home they reveal Shyam's true face but Anjali refuses to believe them. Shyam is thrown out of the house but Anjali continues meeting him secretly.

Arnav's paternal grandmother enters the scene. She is instantly disapproving of Khushi. Arnav is totally in love with Khushi and wants to take their relationship to the next level. The family discovers that no rituals were performed when Arnav and Khushi eloped and they refuse to recognise them as married. Khushi returns to her parents' home and their wedding preparations begin. It is revealed that Arnav's father committed suicide because his affair with Khushi's adoptive mother was discovered by his wife. Arnav's grandmother tries to convince him to break off his relationship with Khushi but Arnav anyway marries her forgetting his past and moving on. Arnav and Khushi start making plans to make Anjali realise that Shyam was the one who initiated her miscarriage. They find proof on his computer and enact a play to bring out the reality. After know the truth, Anjali slaps Shyam and the police arrest him and take him away.

Then a boy named Aarav enters the Raizadas' home followed by Arnav's old friend Sheetal. Khushi observes similarities between him and Arnav, and Sheetal tells her he is Arnav's son. After a series of events, Arnav and Khushi find that Aarav was an orphan being used by Sheetal to get Arnav and his property. The couple happily adopt Aarav as their son.

After a few days leap, Khushi expresses her wish to be independently successful and decides to participate in the Mrs. India beauty pageant. She ends up winning the competition despite several odds and the family is shown happily together.

This is a web series that was created by Hotstar, and is a sequel to the original story. It is set 3 years after the events of IPKKND, and shows how every character from the original show is in the future. The show ends with an anniversary party hosted by Arnav to show his love for Khushi.

The show has been produced and directed by Gul Khan under the banner of 4 Lions Films. Barun Sobti was cast as Arnav Singh Raizada after the original choice, Karan Singh Grover, opted out of the role to focus on his film career; and Sanaya Irani replaced Shraddha Arya who had originally been cast as the female lead.(19)(20)Daljeet Kaur, Deepali Pansare & Akshay Dogra got finalised to play supporting roles to the main leads. Other supporting cast include Jayshree T., Tuhina Vohra, Abha Parmar, Utkarsha Naik, Sanjay Batra and many other actors. Abhaas Mehta and Sana Makbul entered the show as antagonists of the show. Sana later quit the show in December 2011.(21)

International broadcast(edit)

The series premiered on 6 June 2011 on Star Plus airing a 20-minute episode Mondays to Fridays. After completing approximately 398 episodes, the series went off air on 30 November 2012. The series was part of the channels worldwide broadcast and aired in more than 50 countries under the transmission of Star India.It has been dubbed and adapted into multiple languages.

Remakes and further distribution(edit)

The series inspired several international remakes, which include Bojhena Se Bojhena in Bengali on Star Jalsha and as Arangini in Kannada on Suvarna channel. The series were rerunned including, but not limited to in English and Urdu as Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon in Pakistan on Urdu 1 and another free to air channel, Tamil as Idhu Kadhala on Star Vijay, Telugu as Chuppulu Kalisina Shubhavela on Star Maa, Malayalam as Mounam Sammatham on Asianet,Asianet plus ,Kazakh as Kak Nazvat Bul Lyubov?, Arabic as 'Men Nazra Thanya,(22),Vietnamese as Mối Tình Kì Lạon HTV3,(23), French as La Promesse on Reunion 1ere.(24). Turkish as Bir Garip Ask,(25),Indonesian as Khushi on Indosiar, Bulgarian as Diema Family, Georgian as Mojadoebulebi, Lithuanian as Neklausk Meiles Vardo, Russian as How Do I Call This Love, and Armenian as Inchpes Kochel Ays Sere, aired in Jamaica as Unforeseen Love on one of the two free-to-air channels in the country which is CVM Television and airs in Namibia into NBC3 as Strange Love.(26).(27). On 19 March 2018, the series dubbed in Spanish as Duele Amar and telecasted on Panamericana Televisión. IPKKND will be rerunning in Thai as Phaen Rak Lwng Ci on Thai channel 8 from 27 June 2018.

In 2013, there was a spin-off, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?..Ek Baar Phir (English: What Do I Call This Love?.. Once Again) with a brand new plot, starring Avinash Sachdev (Shlok Agnihotri) and Shrenu Parikh (Aastha Shlok Agnihotri).(28)

In 2015, Hotstar launched a finite web series of eight episodes titled Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? - Ek Jashn with the original cast and the characters. The story revolves around Arnav and Khushi's married life after three years.(29)

Reception(edit)

Fans of the series started referring to characters Arnav and Khushi by the portmanteau 'ArShi'.(30) The character of Arnav Singh Raizada was very popular and gave a huge fan following to Barun Sobti such that when Sobti announced his break from the show due to health problems, his fans made it sure that the show was shut down on a happy note rather than any replacement.(31) The onscreen chemistry between Sobti and Sanaya Irani resulted in several awards for best on-screen couple.(32)

Controversy after Sobti's exit(edit)

In September 2012, show's lead actor Barun Sobti had made news after he decided to quit the show.(33) Due to this, fans of the show had said that they will not watch the show after his exit. This lead on to the channel and makers to decide to shut down the show. It aired its last on 30 November 2012.
