2023 Retrospective: Most Underwhelming Song/Comeback
JISOO – FLOWER
It’s not like I really had many expectations for her solo debut. In fact, I had zero. But still… this feels really lazy. It feels like it was just released for the sake of giving her a solo. And while that’s not necessarily something bad, when the song starts out with the line: “ABC, Do-Re-Mi, I was as nice as that” I don’t really get my expectations up. The one thing I’ll give it, is that the pre-chorus is genuinely really cool. I just wish that the rest of the song was as good. Jisoo also looks really bored throughout the entire video which makes it a bore to watch. And on topic of the video, I’d like to say that it makes zero sense. She’s just walking and sitting around and yet you try a chaptered structure. There is no story, so why did you think it would make sense?
Honourable/Dishonourable Mentions:
(G)I-DLE – Allergy
I actually do listen to Allergy sometimes. It has a nice composition and if you don’t think too much about it, it’s very enjoyable to listen and vibe to. But when you start to think about it, it falls apart. How it chooses to represent its message is really weird. It will always be odd to me to see idols singing about just being yourself, when they probably needed to get 10+ procedures done to their bodies. But the biggest issue that I have with the song, is with its lyrics. “I’m a hater of Instagram. Hater of TikTok” okay, but then why are you promoting your song on both of these websites? If you want to make a point, make it. “I want to dance to Hype Boy, but I’m more of a Tomboy” Don’t… don’t ever do this in your song! Don’t call out another song, especially if that song was arguable the biggest hit of the past year. I don’t know if it’s meant to be shade or just a reference, but if you really let that stop you, then I don’t think you are ready to stay. It certainly did not stop ONF and VAV in the military.
(G)I-DLE – Queencard
This song falls into the same category of “Idols singing about self-love is weird”, but it does it a bit worse. I can’t really decide if it’s self-aware of what it does, or if it’s serious with its message, but if they are, they really should have thought a bit more about the lyrics. The whole “no matter what, you are a Queencard” feels and sounds like it was tagged on at the last second, as if doing some damage control. With this it also reminds me of the Pussycat Dolls’ When I Grow Up, and that’s not a compliment.
E’LAST – Kiss Me Baby
As an Elring, 2023 was the most tiring year I have ever experienced. It started out good, but progressively got worse and worse. The disaster that was the US tour, the cult allegations and finally, the iDENTIFICATION comeback. Not only did they not tell us about In being missing for personal reasons, the song is also incredibly, well, underwhelming. Aside from In being missing, causing me to loose some excitement, they completely forgot to give Rano any lines and the chorus drags on for too long. I also did not buy the album, mostly because I don’t want to support the label anymore, but at least NEVERLAND is a good enough B-Side.
