2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

In my mind, cars are supposed to make you happy. A lot of cars do, too. I’ve been lucky enough to drive the new Porsche 911, Acura NSX, and even the mid-engine Corvette this year. They all put a smile on my face, but none of them seduced me the way the Jeep Gladiator did. I used to hate trucks. They’re big, inefficient, and way too serious. Then I drove a bright orange Gladiator Rubicon and haven’t smiled that much since. It’s got more charm than it can tow, and I don’t care how fast it isn’t. Every time I drive one I’m just happy it exists and I’m behind the wheel. There isn’t another car I think about as much as that silly Jeep, and I yearn to have one in my garage. 2019 Mazda Miata RF

The Mazda Miata is very small. I am very not. As such, I’d never driven one because I assumed any attempt would irrefutably prove Pauli’s exclusion principle. But when a 2020 Miata RF Club passed through the MotorTrend garage, I had to find out what makes the car so beloved—laws of physics be damned.

My first Miata was revelatory, recalibrating my sports car preconceptions. The sensations it imparted were like no other I’ve experienced. It spoke to me, letting me know how my limits matched its own and how its abilities contrasted mine. For every input, a direct output. A harmonious delight that cars exponentially more powerful or expensive didn’t deliver.

2019 Nissan Altima S (rental car)

I’ve never been so happy to drive a rental car as I was during a vacation stop in Portland. Our day trip outside the city began with my delight at an upgrade at the rental-car counter—I had reserved a super-cheap subcompact economy car, but alas, none were available. Instead, I was directed to a new Nissan Altima or outgoing-generation Kia Optima for the same price. I went with my instincts, choosing the car with excellent fuel economy, comfortable seats, Apple CarPlay, and a CVT that made it easy to drive smoothly while my husband slept. We overindulged on cheese at the Tillamook Creamery and returned muddy and exhausted from our misty hike on the Oregon coast, but that Altima was a pleasant rental-car surprise. Although it wouldn’t be my first pick to actually buy, the Altima S did what the best daily drivers do: make life easier and more comfortable as you get from place to place. —Zach Gale

1970 Porsche 917K

I cannot stress this enough: even in my line of work, this never happens. Even if the 917 was awful to drive, it would’ve been my highlight of the year (and possibly my career). Picking my favorite drive of the year hasn’t been easy. Our instructions: drift. Again and again. When in doubt, give it more “gas.” Keep your eyes off the snowbanks and you won’t end up in them. 2019 Porsche 911 GT3

Despite all the fuss about the new COTY Corvette, and the Best Driver’s Car 992-generation Porsche 911 (both of which I admire greatly), the finest car I drove this year was the outgoing 991.2-generation Porsche 911 GT3. The engineering team in Weissach had sharpened the knife on the older GT3 until it has approached near-perfection. Firing up the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine brings a rasp of God’s Own Sawzall delivering 500 horsepower (520 for the GT3 RS) and a ludicrous 9,000-rpm redline. The GT3 also offers the magnificent PDK that will make you forswear manuals forever. On any road, straight or crooked, the GT3 delivers the undefinable feeling that this 911 will not be defeated under any circumstance. This street-legal race car skitters predictably, grabs ferociously, and thrusts thrillingly. It is an indomitable creation. Much as I love and respect the new-gen 911, Porsche’s old GT3 has its clutches firmly around my heart. —Mark Rechtin

2020 Chevrolet Corvette

I’m old enough to have been young and impressionable when all those magazine articles first appeared breathlessly heralding the impending arrival of a mid-engine Corvette. I’ve also had the good fortune to be among the very few people outside General Motors to have been entrusted to (gently) test drive most of the early mid-engine ‘Vette prototypes I read about as a schoolboy. So it’s a near miracle that the finished production C8 Corvette not only lived up to, but perhaps surpassed my astronomical expectations of it. That this $60-$90,000 car made just as positive an impression on my younger colleagues—whose entire experience with mid-engine sports coupes has been in Porsche Caymans, V-8 Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and maybe a McLaren or two—is truly astonishing. This Corvette is destined to do to the sports-car segment in the 2020s what the Acura NSX did in the 1990s: command quantum improvements in quality, performance, and/or value. Look for this car to appear on our next “most significant cars of the decade” list, circa December 2029. —Frank Markus

2020 Honda Civic Si

I jumped one of my best drives of the year, but Frank has already claimed it. So the other great drive goes to another C-car, the 2020 Civic Si. I was lucky enough to flog one around Circuit of the Americas, while chasing my colleague Ceso, and found it endlessly entertaining. Nothing like a peppy turbo four-cylinder, snickety-slick six-speed manual, and predictable, responsive handling. All for around $25,000. Deal. —Ed Loh

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

I was about to pick the Porsche 911, until I remembered the hassle of not being able to fit my sports gear or friends. The Mercedes GLE 450 is more my speed: a home away from home. It impressed me in myriad ways, from its strong and smooth acceleration to its top-notch amenities including soft-close doors, wood trim, massaging leather seats, heated and cooled cupholders, and an enormous touchscreen with augmented reality navigation. It’s so luxurious I almost mistook it for the flagship GLS. But what I like most about this SUV is its ride quality. Mercedes-AMG GT3 Race Car

We all dreamed about what we were going to be when we grew up. Astronaut. Fire fighter. Aviator. Me? I wanted to be a racing driver. Then life happened. Job. Mortgage. Kids. But for a few short hours last year I got to live the dream in the Mercedes-AMG GT3, a $440,000-plus factory-built race car.

Under the hood is a thunderous 550-hp race version of AMG’s legendary 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8, cradled in a special chassis with full house race suspension, brakes, electronics, and aerodynamics. I expected to be intimidated by this winged monster. Instead, I was exhilarated.

The big V-8, its NASCAR party-mode soundtrack spitting from a pair of side-pipes, delivers ballistic thrust with nuanced throttle response, and with the slick tires up to temperature, the chassis is ninja-quick in its responses. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 has the pace, precision and poise a pro driver craves. But the true genius of this car is that, unlike some other GT3 race cars, its performance envelope is a broad runway the rest of us feel empowered to explore, not a racer’s edge we’ll struggle to find.

Should I win the lottery, this predictable, bulletproof Mercedes would be my GT3 race car. I can dream, can’t I? —Angus MacKenzie

2019 Tesla Model 3

Although I’ve been at MotorTrend for five years, I didn’t have the chance to drive the Tesla Model 3 until earlier this year, when I participated in a comparison between the Tesla, Genesis G70, and BMW 3 Series. The Model 3 easily won that comparison, showing great handling, power, and impressive technology.

Later in the year, during our COTY judging, the Model 3 advanced to the finals and came in second place just behind the Chevrolet C8 Corvette. But when I drove the base Model 3 home one night, I felt something special that I rarely feel in other cars—the cabin that feels airy with all the glass surrounding it, the instant power delivery, and the expansive range were just a few of the things that caught my attention. It’s also the car of the future, the one that most automakers are targeting when developing their EVs.

For those and many other reasons, the Model 3 was the best car I drove this year. —Miguel Cortina

Byton M-Byte

I’m actually stretching the truth here when I state that this was my best drive of the year because 1) it was actually a ride, and 2) it happened a little over a year ago. I was in the passenger seat of a prototype Byton M-Byte for a nighttime ride around downtown Los Angeles during the auto show. Okay, I’ll produce my certified, car journalist license for modest reality-stretching if I have to.

Before picking this particular 20-minute glide around L.A.’s nighttime Noir streets, though, there’s the very real consideration of how much our collective view of autonomous and connected cars has one-eightied in the year since December 2018. While Waymo is relentlessly advancing (with limited driverless rides now happening in Chandler, Arizona) the news about autonomous vehicles is still shadowed by Elaine Herzberg’s landmark demise against the right-front corner of a Volvo XC90 due to a distracted, phone-watching Uber safety driver. And the skepticism around Level 4 and 5 autonomy has only grown with each delayed target date for its deployment. I’d add that Byton itself has since been colored by controversy over a Chinese investment that triggered the departure of co-founder Carsten Bretfeld.

Still, all the Chinese startups are being buffeted by the headwinds of a slowing domestic car market. And for the EV ones like Byton and NIO, it’s been a Force-5, doubly buffeting from a simultaneous tapering of government incentives for clean-energy vehicles. However, the automotive future I glimpsed that night doesn’t care about a specific name brand or have a delivery date that’s precisely 2020 or five years after that. The autonomous, electrically powered, connected, stress-reducing, traffic-smoothing, time-to-work or sleep or movie-watch car is the inevitable evolution of the automobile. And I sat spellbound, mind-spinning, as I took a ride in its Byton incubator that night. —Kim Reynolds

2019 McLaren 720S Spider

The best car I drove this year is a 1953 Porsche 356 America Roadster. Number 17 of 17 built, 70 horsepower, a lightweight alloy body means the whole thing weighs 1,334 pounds, a windscreen so chopped I could put my chin over it, and I’m one of about 50 people who will get to drive it for the next decade. Perhaps $4M museum cars don’t belong on this list. With that in mind, the best 2019 car I drove in 2019 is the McLaren 720S Spider. I’ve said it a bunch of times, and I’ll say it again: alien technology for the street! McLarens are unique among supercars because when you cut the roof off, they get better. And the 720S was about as good as cars got with a hard top. Blame the ultra-stiff carbon-fiber monocoque. I know I do.

Supercars are funny things. Totally irrelevant of course, yet I can’t stop dreaming about them. That’s how good the 720S Spider is: in a crowded room stuffed with literal dream machines, it stands out. Especially the Luxury Aztec Gold folding hard-top beauty I drove around Los Angeles last Spring. Hot damn. I drove other supercars this year—Ferrari 812 Superfast, Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder, Porsche GT3 RS, Bugatti EB110 SS, Audi R8, Nissan GT-R, Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren 600LT off the top of my head—and the McLaren beats them all. Hands down (with the possible exception of a Lambo Diablo SV Monterey Edition, but we’re here for the new cars). The McLaren is quicker, it’s better-looking, it handles better, it’s more terrifying, it’s more thrilling to drive, it’s more confidence-inspiring, it’s more comfortable—it’s just everything. Except for cheap—the golden car I’m thinking of stickered at about $411,000. Hey man, fast, cheap, and good: pick two. —Jonny Lieberman

Rewind: Alissa & Jeff’s Wedding and Florida Keys Road Trip, 2/6/14 – 2/14/14

When Alissa announced she was getting married in the Florida Keys, it was a no-brainer that Dyan and I would be flying down for the wedding.  The only difficult decision to be made was how long we wanted to extend the vacation.   How about 9 days, Dyan?  Her response, “YES!”  We intended to spend some time in Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and various islands in the Florida Keys.  With a lot of pavement and sunshine between our stops, we’d need a cool car!  And this one came at a price, but I’m not talking about the cost.  This was Dyan’s first glimpse into my obsession with having unique cars on road trips!

Mustang convertibles in south Florida come at a premium, and the going rate for a 9 day rental was over $1,000.  No way I was paying that!  I recall the economy cars running $300-$400 for the full week, so I’d probably have to settle for a Nissan Altima or similar.  I scoured the deepest nooks and crannies of the internet in search of a good deal for a convertible sports car but was coming up empty.  One evening, I logged into work and had an email for discount Globetrotter tickets.  The link took me to the Blue Cross intranet page in our old operating system, Lotus Notes.  I read every discount on the company page.  Some were for deals dating back to the early 2000’s.  I ended up finding a Budget Rental Car promo code for Blue Cross Blue Shield employees that was published several years earlier.  Being that the page was so old, and most of the other discounts were very out of date, I didn’t have much hope of the promo code working.  However, I’d very quickly find out this was the greatest promo code in the history of promo codes…  I popped open my browser and plugged in all the details of our trip on the Budget website.  I entered the promo code.  What happened next blew my mind.  First, the economy cars popped up and rates were significantly less, like $7/day.  Jackpot.  I scrolled down passing the intermediate cars, SUV’s of all sizes, mini vans and trucks – desperately looking for the convertible category.  And then I saw it, the “Mustang Convertible or similar” class. Rate, $225.  Total.  I double checked the dates, thinking I’d only queried up a 2 day rental.  Nope.  I had it all right.  Dates, times and locations were exactly what we were looking for.  I added my credit card number.  The car was reserved and pre-paid!  This was gonna be an epic road trip!

Our flight into FLL took us out over the Atlantic Ocean before swinging back over the coast to land.  I don’t remember the flight, so it must have been smooth sailing!  Once we touched down, first stop was Budget Rental Car.  When we approached the counter, I was so excited about the car. By this point, I had told Dyan every detail there was to know about a Mustang convertible – at least three times. But, because Dyan and I had not been dating for very long, I had failed to mention how great the deal was.  I didn’t want her to think I was super cheap after all! I gave the rental agent our reservation information, and she started typing into her computer terminal for a lengthy amount of time.  At one point, she looked up at me and stated something along the lines of how great of a deal I had found.  I remember just smiling, as to not tip Dyan off that I had just saved nearly $800 off the regular price.   She continued typing and even consulted with her manager a couple of times before flatly indicating, “we don’t have any convertibles left.”  I pleaded with her for a few minutes indicating that I had pre-paid for the convertible, and didn’t comprehend how they did not have a car that was already paid for.  She consulted more with her manager who indicated there was nothing they could do.  Their hands were tied because they had no convertibles left.  No Mustangs, no Camaros and no Sebrings.  They were happy to upgrade us to a full size sedan at no charge.  I didn’t want a full size sedan, and the fact they call a full size sedan an upgrade from a convertible Mustang is preposterous.  I asked that they check with their rental partners, Avis and Payless to see if they had any convertibles.  They scampered off to talk to their affiliates.   While they were away from the counter,  I overheard a different rental agent offering an convertible upgrade to another customer for a premium.  Ah-ha, hey were trying to pull a fast one on me!  It was now approaching an hour we had been at the rental counter.  Dyan was standing by patiently, but probably bored out of her mind!  But now was the time to dig in.  This was getting ridiculous.

When the agent and manager returned, they informed me no convertibles were available with their affiliates. Then I dropped the bomb on them. I told them I overheard another agent offer a convertible as an upgrade, which sent them into damage control mode.  They both began working over the computer terminal frantically, stuttering over their words.  They finally landed on an excuse they could both agree on - they must have just gotten one in stock that didn’t show up in the system previously.  They once again disappeared to the back office to see if it was still available.  When they returned, they indicated it was good news.  They found a convertible, and it was a Chrysler Sebring.  I once again told them to try again because if my neighbor was getting offered a Mustang convertible (which he elected not to rent), that same car should be available for me.  They knew i was not going to leave there without the Mustang or Camaro.  The manager again fled to the office.  We waited longer.  The manager returned several minutes later indicating they had a Mustang or Camaro convertible for us. After 30 minutes of paperwork, we were finally off to the garage.  And this is the part that really got me fuming.  As we walked out into the garage, there were multiple rows of convertible Mustangs and Camaros – there must have been at least 20 in the two rows in front of us.  

Why would they make us wait two hours if they had this many sports cars sitting in the lot? Had I gone with the sedan “upgrade” they were trying to pawn off on me, did they honestly think I wasn’t going to see the muscle car heaven they had parked inside the garage?  Come on!  I was at a complete loss for words – that’s about as poorly as I have ever been treated as a customer buying any product or service.  [After returning from the trip, I had a conversation with a college buddy who was a manager at my local Hertz dealer.  I told him about the deal I found (which he could not believe) and he indicated that convertibles in south Florida have such a huge upgrade premium that they didn’t want me walking out the door with a convertible for 8 days @ $225 when they could upsell it to some rich-schmuck on vacation for maybe $1,500-$2,000 for the same time period]

Now we could finally start our vacation!  First up, check into the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort.  Such a gorgeous property, right on the ocean.  

They upgraded us to a junior corner suite with a partial ocean view, and a full view of the intercostal waterway and downtown Miami.  

We didn’t have too much sunlight left, so we walked on the beach scoping out a dinner spot for the evening.    And once we saw LuLu’s Bait Shack, our decision was made.  We loved this bar from the moment we walked in. We were looking for a fun party bar right on the beach to have a few drinks and see where the night would take us. This is EXACLY what we had in mind.  This bar is basically like a drunk fisherman crashed on FL Beach and wondered what to do next? Sell his fresh seafood, check. Make frozen tropical drinks, check. Relax on an outdoor patio, check. More drinks, ice cold beer, check. "To go" cups for heading over to the beach, check. Live music to entice the folks on the beach to come join the party, check.  LuLu’s is a tropic hut nestled on the upper level of a shopping complex directly across from the ocean. Its views are spectacular. It has very few walls so the ocean air fills the place up. The ambiance is upbeat and very "vacationy".   Their claim to fame is a $2 tap beer which I ordered and delicious frozen concoctions like the Miami Vice (half strawberry daiquiri/half pina colada) which we both ordered as well. They have a huge wall of premixed frozen beverages in every color of the rainbow. Not overly strong, but delicious nonetheless. We also had the crawfish broil (seasonal). They indicated they fly the crawfish in fresh every few days. We had never had crawfish and were feeling adventurous so we took the plunge. When it came out, it was served on a HUGE platter and we were thinking no way we would eat it all. However, if you have never had crawfish, you only get a tiny bite off meat off each crawfish. It was okay, but not filling.  After a couple more drinks, we found ourselves laughing about what we should order for dinner!

We spent the next two days soaking up the sun at Fort Lauderdale Beach, Hollywood Beach and South Beach (Miami).  All three beaches had completely different vibes, and Fort Lauderdale Beach was definitely our favorite.  

It was a younger, more touristy crowd.  Hollywood Beach was a much older crowd – seemed like a retirement community full of orange skinned locals.  South Beach was not what I had expected.  It wasn’t nearly as busy as I had imagined, and had a very diverse group of people. There was a major homeless problem and I guess I never really felt comfortable with the crowd.  We didn’t stray too far from our beach bag/valuables. One of the best things about South Beach was Carabba’s Italian Grill, located on the beach.  Although we didn’t know it at the time, this is a chain restaurant all over the county, and they served up some delicious frozen Miami Vices and the best calamari we had ever tasted.  As of 2019, this restaurant is no longer in business at South Beach.

Day 4 marked the beginning of our road trip through the Florida Keys.  This was one of our favorite aspects of the trip.  Sunshine, 80’s, a convertible and island after island ready to be explored.  The goal of the day was to crash as many resorts as we possibly could in a single day. And by crash, I mean gain access to the pool and amenities even though we were not registered guests! Throughout the day, we ended up crashing three resorts.

The first island along Highway 1 is Key Largo.  This was home of our first attempted crash – Key Largo Bay Marriott Beach Resort. This was our least favorite of the three resorts we crashed.  While the pool was absolutely wonderful, the resort grounds seemed very cramped.  The hotel structure blocked the sun from a significant portion of the pool, so all the guest crammed into the tiny part of the pool deck that did have sunshine.  

A few islands down Hwy 1 is Islamorada, one of the more bustling islands in the Keys.  At the very end of the island is a party resort like none other.  The Postcard Inn.  Our main reason for stopping here wasn’t the resort – we actually didn’t even realize it was a resort at first.  What made us stop was the original TiKi Bar situated right on the water.  It was lunch time, so we ordered their specialty drink, a Key Lime Colada.  It is the most amazing frozen cocktail I have ever had.  We ordered seconds, along with a Florida Key delicacy, conch fritters. Everything here was simply amazing. The drinks, the appetizer and the environment.  We spent at least an hour lounging in the pool and sipping tropical delights before it was time to head south.

About three islands down the highway is Duck Key and there is no doubt about it, we saved the best for last.  Duck Key has one large resort called Hawks Cay.  Complete with multiple pools, dolphin aquatic center, a real lagoon, restaurants, bars, and every other amenity of a 5 star resort.  We spent a few hours at the pool and lagoon, and also sipping Key Lime Coladas.  Their version goes like this:  Bacardi superior rum, cream of coconut, fresh pineapple & pineapple juice, touch of keke beach key lime liquor.  The drinks, setting and weather equaled perfection.  This was by far our favorite resort on the trip.  

We continued south to 1 Sandpiper Lane, Marathon Key, our home away from home for the week.   This is where Alissa and Jeff rented a magnificent oceanfront estate home that had a front row seat to every sunrise.  The home was gorgeous, and perfect for large family gatherings.  It has 7 bedrooms, two enormous family rooms, a huge kitchen, pool and outdoor tiki hut.

We spent the next few days day-tripping out of Marathon.  We took the family back to Duck Key to spend the afternoon around the pool, and got some much needed fishing gear at World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada.  One of the bigger excursions we had was with Sweet E’Nuf Charters – a deep sea fishing experience.  

While Captain Dave did put us on some fish, his mood was quite poor and really didn’t do much to keep his customers comfortable.  We were chasing sail fish in very heavy seas, about 10 miles offshore. Some of the family handled the rough seas better than others, and Captain Dave couldn’t have cared less about those not feeling well.  In addition, most of us had never been deep sea fishing before, so there was a learning curve that needed to be overcome.  Captain Dave expected everybody to know exactly what they were doing. He cursed at a few people for snags, missed fish and improper technique.  We probably just got him on a bad day, but he was all around a bear to be in the boat with.  While we didn’t get any sail fish, we did come away with a mess of mutton snapper, which would serve as dinner!

And speaking of dinners, we pigged out on the freshest seafood the entire trip.  Some of our favorite restaurants were Sunset Grill & Raw Bar, Marathon (Oyster’s Rockafeller – Dyan & Dad) and Castaways, Marathon ( sautéed alligator bites, shrimp).  Some of the other places we ate at were Red Fish Blue Fish, Key West, Roof Top Café (Key West) and Tonio’s Seafood Shack & Tiki Bar.

On one of the days, Dyan and and I drove down to Key West to spend the day with Dyan’s Aunt and Uncle, Dion and Brad.  We loaded up their Boston Whaler and set out on the Atlantic Ocean.  We virtually circled  Key West before heading out to Boca Grande Key. Boca Grande Key is about as south as you can get in the Florida Keys.  The island is pristine and uninhabited, serving as a wildlife sanctuary.  We anchored the boat and swam up to the beach. There were crabs everywhere in the water!  Our tour guides brought food and drinks, and we chilled on the island for a couple of hours. It was lovely!  On our way back the Key West, we noticed dolphins flanking the boat.  

Brad slowed the boat down so we could see the beautiful creatures.  He then asked if we wanted to swim with them.  At first I was hesitant.  I mean, they seem like docile creatures when they are in captive spaces, but who knows what these things were like in the wild!  Before I could even speak, Dyan was already jumping in the water. Well, I guess I have to go now!  I jumped in right behind her.  

The two dolphins swam all around us, and underneath us brushing right up against our legs.  I was kind of frozen in the water.  In hindsight, I wish I would have reached out to touch them, but I guess I was really preoccupied with how these animals actually acted in the wild. Dyan swam with them for about 10 minutes while I more or less just treaded water wondering how long it would be before one of these dolphins got hungry for a foot, calf, thigh or worse. 

We finished up the evening with a sunset cruise back to their house.

The night before the wedding, Alissa and Jeff booked a party bus that drove us down to Key West for the evening.  That I can recall, there were many frozen drinks consumed as we shopped, had dinner and caught the sunset.

And then came Alissa’s Big Day!  She and Jeff got married at an intimate gathering of family at the Sandpiper House, right in front of the ocean.  

It had been really hot earlier in the week, but on her big day, the weather chilled out a bit and the slight breeze off the ocean made for perfect conditions.   

It was the perfect way to end a glorious week in Florida.

The following day was Valentine’s Day, our final day in Florida.  We checked out of the house that morning, and slowly made our way north through the Keys.  We made a few stops for shopping and a fresh fruit snack (fresh pineapple!) as we approached the mainland.  

For this day, it was the ONLY day we did not have a hotel booked for the night.  When planning the trip, I just assumed we would stay near the airport because we had to return the car that evening and take a shuttle to the airport for an early morning flight the following day.  But, one thing I didn’t take into account is that it was Valentine’s Day, and hotels in south Florida on this night are VERY difficult to come by.  We called at least a dozen hotels, but all were full for the night.  I literally thought we’d be renting the convertible an extra day and staying the night at a rest stop.  With Dyan working in the hotel industry in a former life, she told me there was a chance some of the hotels near the airport save rooms for walk-ins that they do not offer over the phone.  So it might be worth a shot to try a couple of the airport hotels.  One of the hotels we called was the Sheraton Dania Beach (now known as Le Meriden Dania Beach).  It was situated right on the southwest corner of the Fort Lauderdale International Airport.  We pulled in around 6PM, and went straight to the front desk.  We talked directly to the same woman who answered the phone when we called.  We asked about availability for the night, and she immediately indicated they had space for us.  I recall wanting to argue with her about the change in vacancy status, but chose not to. The room, was $400/night.  I must have had “Sucker” tattooed to my forehead that room was sold the minute she said she had availability.  We ended up eating dinner in the hotel restaurant, which had a special Valentines menu consisting of some kind of surf and turf. At $79/person, it was the only thing on the menu.  But hey, it came with a free glass of wine!  All that money I thought I saved on the Mustang, ended up being spent on hotel and dinner on the final night!  The lesson learned:  Don’t plan Valentine’s Day last minute!

Nissan Rogue: 5 Questions With Marketing Manager Aditya Jairaj

SUVs and crossover vehicles are selling better than they ever have, but the Nissan Rogue is an uncommon success story even at a time of ascendance for its category. U.S. sales of Nissan’s highest-volume vehicle by far were up by 15 percent in 2016 over 2015 and are ahead another 23 percent for 2017 to date.

Part of the credit goes to Nissan’s introduction last summer of a Rogue Sport model to the rest of the Rogue lineup. But most of Rogue’s impressive gains came before that addition, thanks to product innovation and design coupled with savvy marketing efforts including a limited edition model that tied into the release of the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story movie last November.

Rogue has carried uncommonly high levels of consumer financial incentives, and Nissan has promoted base versions of the vehicle heavily to rental fleets, helping drive sales of lower-profit units. Sometimes brands fear long-term damage to nameplates from such practices, but all those sales represent more “share of road” for Rogue.

When it was introduced a decade ago, Rogue was not positioned as a sexy model. It was a workhorse, high-volume vehicle, one that didn’t seem to be a candidate for the kind of lofty perch it enjoys today.

With 1.8 million units sold over its 1o-year history, Nissan Rogue today not only is the brand’s top-selling vehicle in America—by about half in volume over the next most popular model, the Altima mid-size sedan—but also the compact Rogue is America’s No. 2-selling utility vehicle. It’s nearly on a level with No. 1 Toyota RAV4, and ahead of the Honda CR-V, as well as Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“There’s nothing a good product can’t do,” Aditya Jairaj, Nissan America’s senior marketing manager for marketing crossovers including Rogue and Rogue Sport, told brandchannel. “We have a great product that customers like. And the organization has been able to ride the shift by customer from preferring sedans to preferring SUVs. As customers want more and more Rogues, we’ve been able to provide them.”

Jairaj shared more about the Rogue’s growth and rise in stature in Nissan’s portfolio:

How has Nissan kept improving Rogue over the years to get to where it is today?

Well, we just announced that, in the 2018 model Rogue, we are launching ProPilot Assist, which can help drivers stay centered in the lane, navigate stop-and-go traffic, maintain a set vehicle speed and maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead—all with a simple, two-button operation. It’s the foundation for the fully autonomous vehicles of the future.

We’re launching it first on our highest-selling product by volume. This is testimony to the fact that we are providing customers with features that really wow and enthrall them. This is a huge step for us. We could have launched ProPilot Assist on a smaller product and phased it in. But Rogue is so important to us that we launched it there.

We’ve also made Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across all Rogue trims for 2018. That’s a big feature.

Is continuing innovation part of the Rogue’s evolution?

It’s not the first time we’ve done this with Rogue. In model year 2017-and-a-half we made a bunch of other safety features standard on Rogue. You really don’t get these features standard with our competitors.

Beginning with the Model Year 2014 version, we made huge changes in Rogue’s looks. The new one has been a lot more bold and a lot more pronounced in exterior styling. For the 2017 model we also  made some minor changes, and spent a good amount of money to make the car look even better. We saw big customer reactions to the second-generation styling. It was well-received by customers.

How has marketing helped differentiate Rogue?

The recall of the nameplate is nascent. We’ve taken several actions to produce that. The most recent was our partnership with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. When we associated with that, it helped us create more awareness for the nameplate and it gave us a good reach. Last December we had the best December ever for Rogue sales, about 40,000 units, after the Rogue One campaign. Just because you have a campaign doesn’t mean you see a spike in sales, but this gave us recall and reach that we hadn’t had with customers.

Who are Rogue’s customers, demographically speaking?

A significant portion of our base is young parents, and to them technology is important. There’s a bit of a skew toward females—mothers with young kids—and the way the vehicle is specced out, you have just enough space for a couple of kids, and it fits their needs. Yet the ride is nice, peppy and with good torque.

What was the thinking behind introducing Rogue Sport in May?

It’s not just another trim, it’s an entire new vehicle—on the same platform, but targeting a different customer, who’s a little younger than the Rogue buyer, probably single, or young couples without kids, or maybe empty-nester.s With the advent of Sport, our sales numbers have gone up even more.

Why Actor Gabrielle Dennis Picked a Range Rover Sport Over a Corvette and Tesla

When Gabrielle Dennis got cast on Rosewood, she took it as an opportunity to buy her first SUV—a used 2014 Range Rover Sport Autobiography she could enjoy on her long commute.

“It was my first network TV series that I was a series regular, so I was very excited. I had been driving my same college car for 10 years,” she says with a laugh. “So it was time to get an upgrade. I’d been driving my same Nissan Altima. It was paid off, it was starting to show wear and tear. I wanted to be in something that would feel fun and be a little more distracting from the monotony of being on the road, and I loved that it had the red interior.”

Because of the vehicle’s rare color combination, Dennis had to look all the way to Hawaii to find what she wanted, and the seller shipped it to Los Angeles for free. “We shop for cars based on the exterior, but the interior’s for me. It’s for the driver,” she says. “I love the red and black interior; I love that I can sit high, and I love the speed, the ability to get in and out of lanes. I had looked at the G-Wagen, but they were uncomfortable. I liked that the Range was a comfortable SUV. It’s got luxury, but it was also very fun because it’s a Sport. It’s a fun truck to drive.”

She tried the more traditional Range Rover but found it felt too big. The Sport is easier to park. “What I love about it, it feels daintier for an SUV,” she says. “The interior didn’t feel overwhelming, I didn’t feel there was this huge distance from myself and whoever is in the back seat.”

Initially, Dennis was all set to buy a Tesla, but she would have had to upgrade the electrical panel at her rental house to accommodate charging. “Especially in 2015, I don’t know that there were as many charging stations available, so I didn’t want to run the risk of running out of [range] to or from work. I had the color picked out, I knew I was going to get the red, and my brake pads were yellow. I had a whole vision,” she says with a laugh. “I had it figured out, but there was something about that candy apple red, which was so pretty, and the shape was gorgeous.”

Her only criticisms with the Range Rover Sport is that it’s a gas guzzler, and it’s harder to park than a sedan. “The body style came out in 2014, and I bought it used in 2015 because I became a firm believer of buying used vehicles and buying cash whenever you can,” she says, “because my very first vehicle that I bought got totaled and wrecked less than two months of owning it.” She also liked the SUV’s styling, noting that it “had a little more curve” to its design and wasn’t very boxy. Dennis loves the panoramic sunroof that extends over the back seat, providing lots of natural light.

Dennis also thought about getting an old 1970s Corvette Stingray to drive to the set. “People were laughing, ‘You know that can’t be your daily car to commute all the way from the Valley to Manhattan Beach. That’s more of a weekend car, a neighborhood drive-around car!’”

She looked at a 2015 Corvette, but the two-seater felt too low and claustrophobic.  “I just didn’t want to be that grounded and feel every bump on the 405,” she says.

Car she learned to drive in

Dennis grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she learned to drive in a car the driving school provided when the instructor came to her house for lessons. She also got to drive her mother’s white Volvo 740 turbo.

“It was a very sturdy, strong car,” she says. “I remember being able to drive that a few times, but I actually learned how to drive through driving school. I immediately got my very first car as soon as I turned 16.”

The summer Dennis was 15, she planned to buy a car and worked at the mall at a kiosk selling manicure kits. “I was one of those annoying people who would ask if you wanted to sample the lotion and buff your nails and make them shiny,” she laughs. “But it was an amazing summer job because I earned the money I needed to buy my car.”

She sold enough manicure kits at her job, saving $3,000. Right when she turned 16, Dennis bought a used 1995 or 1996 Mitsubishi Galant. “It was blue, it had the sunroof, [and] it had a sound system. It was so amazing. I felt so grown up.”

Dennis needed the car as soon as she could get one because she was focused on her career. “I went to a performing arts school, so I was always in rehearsals and relying on my mother to pick me up and be on time,” she says with a laugh. “I knew it would be a relief for her to stop being a chauffeur for myself and my sister, of driving us to practices and obligations. So I was ready to drive. As soon as I got a permit, I was working, and as soon as I turned 16, I got my license, because I was ready to get out there on the road and to feel accomplished.”

Within two months, though, her car was totaled. “I don’t even remember why my mom was driving my car, but she got rear-ended by a truck,” she recalls. “I paid for the down payment, and I was leasing the vehicle. When she got the car totaled, it freaked me out because I got my down payment back, so I thought, ‘Now I’ll just pay cash.’”Dennis then bought a white Nissan Stanza. “That was also used and very old, but it worked,” she says. “[My best friend and I] were known as ‘the two girls in the white car,’ because we went everywhere. So we had a lot of fun, just going to the car wash and washing our car, that was fun for us.”

She also learned little nuances about vehicles from her old Nissan. “There was a hole in the muffler at one point, so I remember driving past somebody, and their car was making the same noise my car used to make. ‘They have a hole in their muffler,’ or ‘There’s something wrong with the tailpipe,’” she laughs. “… Because my car was old and used, we took a lot of care in keeping it clean, because that was the saving grace. At least if it’s clean, it’ll still look nice.”

She sold the Nissan for $800 when she went to college in Washington, D.C. and later bought a Toyota Corolla that eventually ran into some mechanical issues, at which point her grandfather gave her his Mercury Grand Marquis.

“It felt like I was driving this spaceship. It was this huge, white, long car. When I was on the road, I got so much respect. People got out of my way when I turned on my blinker. Nobody wanted me to hit them because the car was so big,” she says, laughing. “Those cars were built to last. My grandfather always said, ‘If you get into an accident, nothing’s going to happen to you.’ I remember people laughing at me, ‘You are so little driving this big car.’”

Turns out, her grandfather was right. The Grand Marquis got totaled, and she was fine. It got rear-ended by a truck on the highway when Dennis was on holiday break in college. “The trunk was almost to the window. I’m just thinking, ‘Just smash it down and fix the trunk, and I can be on my way,’” she says, laughing. “I didn’t know any better.”

Even with the insurance payout, she didn’t have enough to buy another car with cash, so she bought her only new car. “I had an ex who worked at a dealership, and I ended up buying a new Nissan Altima in 2002 or 2003,” she says.

Dennis had a six-year loan, and the moment she mailed off her last payment and took the car in for regular maintenance, she got bad news. “It was as if it was timed,” she says. “They told me my engine had blew. I had to charge a new engine to my credit card and take years to pay that off. I got my good use out of that car, eventually.”

She sold the Altima for $2,500 to buy her Range Rover. “I feel good. I sold it to this young kid and his brother ,and it reminded me of back when I was looking for a used car. It was in decent condition. A couple of scrapes and dings from my years of parking in D.C.,” she says.

With all her cars, she now believes in buying cars used. “When I got the Range Rover, I’m paying cash for it, I don’t want to deal with monthly payments,” she says. “If I have the money, I just rip the Band-Aid off, and I’m not paying the bank interest.”

Favorite road trip

When Dennis was younger, her favorite road trip was visiting family in Atlanta. “It was a nice fun way to listen to music, sing in the car, and packing snacks for some reason was so fun. One of my mom’s friends who drove with us loved pickled okra. I remember it spilling, and we had to deal with the smell of pickled okra on the drive,” she says, laughing. “Other than that, packing your favorite sandwiches and snacks and playing games in the car. When you’re a kid, you live for those moments. That’s a good seven-hour drive.”

The payoff was getting to Atlanta and exploring the city, which included the Coca-Cola factory, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s home, the aquarium, and seeing family. “But now, I’m not that big of a fan of road trips because most of the places I like to go require getting on a plane,” she says. “But my favorite place to drive—and I do this every other year—is to Las Vegas.”

Dennis loves the convenience of getting in her car and being able to pack whatever she wants and taking her time. “It’s very leisurely. I like when it’s time to leave Vegas; I’m not one of those people who look like they’re mad crazy trying to get out to the airport on time,” she says. “I like the relaxed vibe of driving to Vegas. You can shop and bring things back with you. Parking used to be free everywhere you go. We would either rent a car or take my Range down there.”

One time, Dennis took the opportunity of a major traffic jam on the way home as a way to really try out her Range Rover. “It was an adventure. Pulling out a map and literally hopping off the highway and taking a desert route. Part of it was creepy. It was a completely open, wide desert,” she says “But it was fun to just hop off the road, and it wasn’t something I was able to do in my Altima. It was like, ‘Let’s put this truck to the test and this rocky terrain and really get it dirty and go for it. If we get lost, we can see the highway; we can always go back.’”

She noticed other cars had to turn back when the going got especially rough. “It was very fun. I felt very proud,” she says. “I thought, ‘This little off-roading thing can be something I’m into!’ The car was filthy by the time I got to L.A. It was fun to take that adventure.”

The drive to Vegas is always relaxing for Dennis. “You can get to Vegas in less than four hours. It’s just about timing it right. There’s something about being able to actually go the speed limit because in L.A. everything is bumper-to-bumper traffic, and everyone’s moving at a snail’s pace,” she says. “But it’s nice to just get on the road and have a nice rhythm and have the window down, the wind blowing in your hair. There’s something really cool about that.”

Some of her most memorable road trips have been with her mother.

“When I drove out, it was my Altima. I was living in Maryland at the time, and I stopped in Ohio to pick my mother up to continue the journey with me to California,” she recalls. “That was the longest road trip I’d ever done. Then my mother decided to move and help me out, so I went back to Ohio to help her move. She moved here so many times.”

One time they were in U-Haul truck, and she says it started to smoke on the highway. “We had to pull over. It was late at night. We called AAA, and we had to stay at a hotel,” she says. “My mother’s one of those road trippers, she’s done this trip between Ohio and L.A. or Atlanta and L.A. a couple of times now. She likes to go straight through. She’d rather just sleep at a truck stop and take a quick nap. I was like, ‘I’m going to pay for the hotel, get a comfortable night’s rest.’ She’s so adventurous, her idea of the perfect life is just being in an RV. That way, when she gets bored with a city, she can just pick up and move to another one. That is her dream vision.”

Dennis has another memory of being in a large U-Haul with furniture going to California, this time when she left Maryland to pick her mom up in Ohio. “I remember … we ran out of gas literally feet from the gas station, mere feet from turning in,” Dennis says, laughing. “We were clearly Thelma and Louise on the road, having all kinds of weird adventures.”

CBS’ S.W.A.T and HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show

Dennis is back on CBS’ S.W.A.T. playing Shemar Moore’s sister, and her HBO show, A Black Lady Sketch Show, just got picked up for a second season, which brings her back to her comedy roots.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity, like with the sketch show. Most people know me in more of a dramatic space, like with the S.W.A.T. character, when I was on Rosewood, Luke Cage, or when I played Whitney Houston in the Bobby Brown miniseries,” Dennis says. “Most people relate me to more dramatic acting. What I love about this sketch show—the ability to be part of the HBO family is amazing, but to be able to get out and really stretch my legs in the comedy space, because that was actually what I started doing when I moved to Los Angeles. I did standup comedy.”

Dennis had a sketch group that toured. “I remembered going to Bakersfield, a dinner theater. People were showing up in furs and limousines,” she says. “They went all out for us. That was the highlight of their weekend, and it was such a great, warm feeling.”

So to be back in comedy has been a nice instance of coming full circle. “This platform has been amazing. I’m so grateful for that opportunity because the response has been amazing. The show has been critically acclaimed. It’s just been a fun ride, and I can’t wait to explore more of these characters that people aren’t used to seeing me in and seeing me do.”
