First Drive: 2019 Nissan Altima

SANTA BARBARA, California – There are a handful of midsize sedans out there whose names have become ubiquitous in the modern era, with the Altima being one of them. In its quarter century on the market, the made in America Altima has grown into a huge sales success for Nissan and a credible foil for the likes of the middleweight title holders Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

But while it’s all well and good to have name recognition, that’s certainly no guarantee of success in today’s bread-and-butter sedan segment—one that has been getting crushed in favor of crossovers. The Ford Fusion is essentially on life support, and the likes of the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6, and Volkswagen Passat have all seen their share of the sales pie shrink. If you want your sedan to survive in today’s landscape, you better bring it when you bring out a new model like the sixth-generation, 2019 Nissan Altima.

Though Nissan is outwardly bullish on the Altima’s future, it’s clear that it wanted—in some ways needed—to make a bold, aggressive exterior design statement to draw notice to a car that in recent years had become relatively anonymous. While it cribs elements from recent Nissan efforts, most notably the Maxima, you’re not going to miss its new V face. You can argue with some of the details like its horse-collar of a grille (Edsel, anyone?), but it’s a cohesive design overall that’s as attractive and distinctive, possibly more so, than the new Accord or Camry—depending on your aesthetic viewpoint, of course.

On the inside, as you’d expect, the 2019 Altima is far more improved and refined. The most noticeable upgrade is its new prominent center touchscreen, which now measures at 8.0-inches and has large volume and tuning knobs. (Take it from Honda, you have to have those knobs.) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the system can cope with the speed both software systems need to operate. The fruits of Nissan’s Amazon Alexa partnership can also be experienced in the Altima. None of the materials inside felt terribly cheap, although there was still a quality disparity between the scratchy fabric and the plusher leather upholstery on the 8-way power driver’s seat. At least they were both comfortable. In highly-equipped trim levels with attractive materials and color combinations, the Altima is a nice place to be. All passengers are also likely to appreciate the four USB charging points scattered around the car.

Under the hood of the new 2019 Altima you’ll find two engine options. Nissan’s 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four remains the base engine. It’s essentially a carryover design, but Nissan says it has more than 80 percent new parts and uses direct injection among other refinements to deliver 188 horsepower, nine more horses than before. Every 2.5-liter model of the new Altima is now available with an optional all-wheel drive system with a 50:50 torque split in most situations, a first for a Nissan sedan and something that remains a relative rarity in this segment short of a Subaru lot. Front-wheel drive 2.5-liter models are rated at 27 mpg city/39 highway—up one in both categories. Adding all-wheel drive knocks those numbers down by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.

The big powertrain news for the 2019 Altima though is the addition of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Normally, that wouldn’t be much of a blockbuster as seemingly every car and crossover under the sun these days has a boosted four of the same displacement. But this isn’t just any old 2.0-liter turbo four; this is Nissan’s all-new VC-Turbo engine, which recently made its debut in the Infiniti QX50 crossover. While it’s down on power from the 3.5-liter V-6 it replaces, it offers more torque and the unit itself is lighter—putting less weight at the front of the car. Nissan has engineered the engine to be able to adjust compression ratios from 8:1 to 14:1, depending on whether the greatest performance or the greatest efficiency is needed. It also bests the old V-6’s EPA figures by as much as 3 mpg. One bummer though, the VC-Turbo isn’t available with all-wheel drive.

Underpinning the 2019 Altima is the same Renault-Nissan D platform as the outgoing model. The company’s engineers say it’s been extensively redesigned to make it more rigid and refined, to accommodate the all-wheel drive system, and to improve efficiency.

Despite all the boasting and the improvements and the promise of excitement, when it comes down to it we found the 2019 Altima drives a lot like the old model. Yes, there is a bit more refinement, and it’s certainly not offensive in any way, but no new ground is broken. Models equipped with the 2.5-liter and the CVT drive like, well, Nissans with CVTs and 2.5-liter engines. Power is relatively smooth and Nissan continues to refine its CVT, but you have to wonder how good the Altima might be if it were offered with a six-speed automatic that you still get in a Camry, or a small-displacement turbo and six-speeder as the Passat has. It’s worth noting both of those cars post similar fuel economy figures.

Most of our time however was spent in a top tier Altima Platinum with the new VC-Turbo making the power. While the old V-6 could be a fun engine when pushed, one could never really call it hushed or refined. That’s where the VC-Turbo shines. While the CVT can make the base engine dull to rev in certain situations, it seems to keep the turbo constantly awake, eliminating pretty much any perceptible lag. The VC-Turbo can also be had in the SR trim, which gets changes to the steering and ride in pursuit of that ever elusive “sportiness.” We drove an SR with the 2.5-liter front-drive setup and none of our sporting senses were turned on by the car. While the wheel sizes jump from the base 16-inchers to 19s on the SR models, grip seemed to be about the same as the softer setup. Our takeaway? While you can have a bit of fun in the VC-Turbo-equipped car, the Altima is tuned more for comfort and refinement than anything else, no matter how you option it.

It’s also tuned to be a safe car. The 2019 Altima is the latest Nissan to get the marque’s Pro Pilot Assist assistance technology that can keep the car centered on freeway lanes. With available adaptive cruise control and blind spot and lane keep assists, Nissan’s self-driving assist system was up there with similar technologies from luxury automakers when I tried it on the current Leaf and Rogue models. This may be another draw for customers comparing cars in this class. Features such as automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring are standard on all but the base Altimas, too.

As for pricing, the base S model starts at $24,645 including destination, with the top-level Platinum with the VC-Turbo going for $35,675. All-wheel-drive is a $1,350 option on all models with the 2.5-liter. These numbers fall pretty much in the middle of the mainstream sedan market.

And that’s where the Altima continues to land: in the middle. Despite the styling and promises of an exciting time behind the wheel, it remains a pragmatic automotive appliance more than anything else with good fuel economy, plenty of space, impressive tech options, and lots of standard equipment. Given that the Altima is now in the middle of an ever smaller pack, there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t continue to find buyers who value comfort and convenience over performance and handling. Honestly, that’s the majority of people in this segment, anyway.

At the Altima’s launch, the product representatives threw out the cringe worthy line, “not your parent’s car,” when describing their new baby. It has a little more truth to it now than it maybe did before—because your parents are more than likely driving a crossover. But we’re betting they at least know the Altima by name

I had a collision a few weeks before and it is classified as collision damage. I received an estimate at a body shop who initially provided an estimate of $xxxxx/- and said that the insurance company has agreed to pay them and a delivery date was given. Now, things have changed in the middle and the body shop manager tells me a new stories of additional things that went wrong due to collision (all of a sudden) and that the insurance agent after inspection wants to call it a total loss based on this new estimate. My insurance company- State farm wants it to call a total loss which I doubt given the extent of repair it might take for the minor damage in the front fender alone. Now, here are my questions. I now have suspicion on the integrity of the body shop as well the trick palyed in declaring total loss. 1. Can I have a second opinion at a different body shop? Does State farm allow that? 2. If the repair cost is more than the ACV, and if I still wish to keep the car, can I negotiate for the max amount less deductible that State farm is willing to pay the body shop (xx% of the max amount that state farm is willing to pay before declaring total loss) and I take care of the remaining cost? They told me that they would set me up with a rental car, and cover the fees. Today I went to Enterprise to pick up the rental car and was asked if the insurance company (USAA) had mentioned anything about a underage bracket fee. When I told them that they hadn't, the woman at enterprise contacted USAA. It was then that they stated that they would not pay for the underage fee (I am 19), which is about $22 per day. Naturally, I was completely outraged. Both my insurance company and USAA's offices are closed at this time, so I have to wait until tomorrow to contact them. First Drive: 2019 Nissan Altima

SANTA BARBARA, California – There are a handful of midsize sedans out there whose names have become ubiquitous in the modern era, with the Altima being one of them. In its quarter century on the market, the made in America Altima has grown into a huge sales success for Nissan and a credible foil for the likes of the middleweight title holders Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

But while it’s all well and good to have name recognition, that’s certainly no guarantee of success in today’s bread-and-butter sedan segment—one that has been getting crushed in favor of crossovers. The Ford Fusion is essentially on life support, and the likes of the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6, and Volkswagen Passat have all seen their share of the sales pie shrink. If you want your sedan to survive in today’s landscape, you better bring it when you bring out a new model like the sixth-generation, 2019 Nissan Altima.

Though Nissan is outwardly bullish on the Altima’s future, it’s clear that it wanted—in some ways needed—to make a bold, aggressive exterior design statement to draw notice to a car that in recent years had become relatively anonymous. While it cribs elements from recent Nissan efforts, most notably the Maxima, you’re not going to miss its new V face. You can argue with some of the details like its horse-collar of a grille (Edsel, anyone?), but it’s a cohesive design overall that’s as attractive and distinctive, possibly more so, than the new Accord or Camry—depending on your aesthetic viewpoint, of course.

On the inside, as you’d expect, the 2019 Altima is far more improved and refined. The most noticeable upgrade is its new prominent center touchscreen, which now measures at 8.0-inches and has large volume and tuning knobs. (Take it from Honda, you have to have those knobs.) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the system can cope with the speed both software systems need to operate. The fruits of Nissan’s Amazon Alexa partnership can also be experienced in the Altima. None of the materials inside felt terribly cheap, although there was still a quality disparity between the scratchy fabric and the plusher leather upholstery on the 8-way power driver’s seat. At least they were both comfortable. In highly-equipped trim levels with attractive materials and color combinations, the Altima is a nice place to be. All passengers are also likely to appreciate the four USB charging points scattered around the car.

Under the hood of the new 2019 Altima you’ll find two engine options. Nissan’s 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four remains the base engine. It’s essentially a carryover design, but Nissan says it has more than 80 percent new parts and uses direct injection among other refinements to deliver 188 horsepower, nine more horses than before. Every 2.5-liter model of the new Altima is now available with an optional all-wheel drive system with a 50:50 torque split in most situations, a first for a Nissan sedan and something that remains a relative rarity in this segment short of a Subaru lot. Front-wheel drive 2.5-liter models are rated at 27 mpg city/39 highway—up one in both categories. Adding all-wheel drive knocks those numbers down by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.

The big powertrain news for the 2019 Altima though is the addition of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Normally, that wouldn’t be much of a blockbuster as seemingly every car and crossover under the sun these days has a boosted four of the same displacement. But this isn’t just any old 2.0-liter turbo four; this is Nissan’s all-new VC-Turbo engine, which recently made its debut in the Infiniti QX50 crossover. While it’s down on power from the 3.5-liter V-6 it replaces, it offers more torque and the unit itself is lighter—putting less weight at the front of the car. Nissan has engineered the engine to be able to adjust compression ratios from 8:1 to 14:1, depending on whether the greatest performance or the greatest efficiency is needed. It also bests the old V-6’s EPA figures by as much as 3 mpg. One bummer though, the VC-Turbo isn’t available with all-wheel drive.

Underpinning the 2019 Altima is the same Renault-Nissan D platform as the outgoing model. The company’s engineers say it’s been extensively redesigned to make it more rigid and refined, to accommodate the all-wheel drive system, and to improve efficiency.

Despite all the boasting and the improvements and the promise of excitement, when it comes down to it we found the 2019 Altima drives a lot like the old model. Yes, there is a bit more refinement, and it’s certainly not offensive in any way, but no new ground is broken. Models equipped with the 2.5-liter and the CVT drive like, well, Nissans with CVTs and 2.5-liter engines. Power is relatively smooth and Nissan continues to refine its CVT, but you have to wonder how good the Altima might be if it were offered with a six-speed automatic that you still get in a Camry, or a small-displacement turbo and six-speeder as the Passat has. It’s worth noting both of those cars post similar fuel economy figures.

Most of our time however was spent in a top tier Altima Platinum with the new VC-Turbo making the power. While the old V-6 could be a fun engine when pushed, one could never really call it hushed or refined. That’s where the VC-Turbo shines. While the CVT can make the base engine dull to rev in certain situations, it seems to keep the turbo constantly awake, eliminating pretty much any perceptible lag. The VC-Turbo can also be had in the SR trim, which gets changes to the steering and ride in pursuit of that ever elusive “sportiness.” We drove an SR with the 2.5-liter front-drive setup and none of our sporting senses were turned on by the car. While the wheel sizes jump from the base 16-inchers to 19s on the SR models, grip seemed to be about the same as the softer setup. Our takeaway? While you can have a bit of fun in the VC-Turbo-equipped car, the Altima is tuned more for comfort and refinement than anything else, no matter how you option it.

It’s also tuned to be a safe car. The 2019 Altima is the latest Nissan to get the marque’s Pro Pilot Assist assistance technology that can keep the car centered on freeway lanes. With available adaptive cruise control and blind spot and lane keep assists, Nissan’s self-driving assist system was up there with similar technologies from luxury automakers when I tried it on the current Leaf and Rogue models. This may be another draw for customers comparing cars in this class. Features such as automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring are standard on all but the base Altimas, too.

As for pricing, the base S model starts at $24,645 including destination, with the top-level Platinum with the VC-Turbo going for $35,675. All-wheel-drive is a $1,350 option on all models with the 2.5-liter. These numbers fall pretty much in the middle of the mainstream sedan market.

And that’s where the Altima continues to land: in the middle. Despite the styling and promises of an exciting time behind the wheel, it remains a pragmatic automotive appliance more than anything else with good fuel economy, plenty of space, impressive tech options, and lots of standard equipment. Given that the Altima is now in the middle of an ever smaller pack, there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t continue to find buyers who value comfort and convenience over performance and handling. Honestly, that’s the majority of people in this segment, anyway.

At the Altima’s launch, the product representatives threw out the cringe worthy line, “not your parent’s car,” when describing their new baby. It has a little more truth to it now than it maybe did before—because your parents are more than likely driving a crossover. But we’re betting they at least know the Altima by name

2019 Nissan Altima Returns to Battle

The 2019 Nissan Altima charges into the midsize sedan segment ready to battle the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry with available all-wheel drive, a couple key standard features, and a new upgrade-engine option.

The Altima has traditionally placed third in annual midsize sedan sales far behind the Toyota Camry, also falling short of the Honda Accord. With the 2019 Altima’s thorough updates inside and out, could this Nissan four-door finally pull ahead of the Honda by the end of the year?

The 2019 Altima enters the segment with available all-wheel drive, a feature offered by the Ford Fusion and Subaru Legacy but not available at any price on the Toyota and Honda. The new all-wheel-drive system defaults to sending all of the torque to the front wheels, but can change that torque split to 50/50 front/rear depending on the conditions. Like the standard front-drive models, all-wheel drive will be offered with every trim on the base engine, a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4 said to be made with 80 percent redesigned or new parts. The 2019 Altima 2.5 is good for 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, and the direct-injection engine is paired to a CVT.

The base-engine Altima was always one of the quicker-accelerating cars in its segment, and this generation appears no different. For the more lead-footed drivers out there, the 2019 Altima will offer a new four-cylinder VC-Turbo engine in place of the 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V-6 on the outgoing model. The 2019 Altima with the VC-Turbo engine makes 248 hp (22 hp less than the outgoing V-6) and 273 lb-ft (22 lb-ft more than the V-6) on premium gas. How those figures translate to on-the-road performance and a 0-60 time is something we look forward to testing on the VC-Turbo model, which is only offered with front-wheel drive and a CVT.

Once the 2019 Altima is on the road, drivers may appreciate the car’s new dual-pinion electric power steering system that Nissan says improves feel and is quieter. All Altimas should benefit from dynamic updates that include monotube rear shocks and suspension reinforcements to make the car feel more responsive without adding unwanted harshness. As someone who spent a year in a 2013 Altima 2.5 SL and reviewed a more recently updated Altima 2.5 SV, I’m also interested in Nissan’s claim of lower NVH thanks to the new platform and engines. Although the 2016-2018 models improved the Altima’s NVH performance, the earlier cars’ engine and transmission were never on the quiet side.

Some 2019 Altimas will come with Active Noise Cancellation to make the cabin a bit quieter, but it’s the 8.0-inch touchscreen most will notice when they step inside an Altima. Every 2019 Altima has that screen, which is mounted higher on the center stack than the too-low placement on the outgoing model. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and push-button start with hands-free keyless entry are all standard. The latest version of Nissan’s so-called Zero Gravity seats are also standard and, again, as someone who spent a year in a last-gen Altima, I can tell you that those Zero Gravity seats were a real highlight for a car intended to be an easy and comfortable commuter. Every 2019 Altima will also get a 7.0-inch color display in the center of the instrument cluster.

What you won’t find standard on the 2019 Altima S or SR trims is Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, a comprehensive package of active safety tech. The tech, which is standard on the SV, SL, and Platinum trims, includes a number of features that, arguably, are kind of like your first smartphone in that you never knew you needed them until you used them on a regular basis. The most important part of the package is automatic emergency braking, which can apply the brakes if the car detects a potential obstacle ahead. The SV, SL, and Platinum trims also get lane departure mitigation and an adaptive cruise control system that can function in stop-and-go traffic. A Rear Automatic Braking system is new and, like the similar system we’ve seen on Infinitis, can apply the brakes to avoid a potential collision when you’re reversing (after providing visual and audio cues to the driver that something’s up). Although it’s a shame that 2019 Altima S and SR customers won’t have these features standard—Toyota makes a suite of active safety tech standard on every Camry and Honda includes its version on every Accord—we hope this strategy will allow Nissan to keep the lower trims more affordable.

On the other side of the spectrum, loaded 2019 Altimas will include a nine-speaker Bose sound system, LED headlights and LED fog lights, and leather seats with perforated inserts. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available, but unlike the Accord, ventilated front seats and heated outboard rear seats are not. The new Altima is the latest new car to wear a floating roof design, but that bold design choice isn’t the only detail that may make an impression on those familiar with the outgoing Altima’s design. The Altima’s wheelbase has been stretched by 1.9 inches, and the car is about 1 inch longer, wider, and lower than the last-gen model. The front overhang has also been trimmed.

For the more practically minded buyers, the 2019 Altima will also likely build on the outgoing car’s already impressive EPA ratings. The 2019 Altima 2.5 could hit an EPA-rated 40 mpg on the highway (non-SR trims of the 2018 model are rated 27/38 mpg city/highway), and Nissan suggests the Altima VC-Turbo model might hit an EPA-rated 35 mpg on the highway. A limited-edition launch model based on the VC-Turbo model will be offered this summer; otherwise, the 2019 Altima goes on sale this fall.

So the new 2019 Nissan Altima has some cool standard and available features, offers all-wheel drive, and its base engine is more powerful than before yet the car will probably be more efficient than its predecessor. Will that be enough to convince buyers already set on an Accord or another midsize sedan to reconsider the Altima? As an increasing number of buyers skip midsize sedans altogether for a crossover, the 2019 Altima at least looks like it has what it needs to maintain its relevance in this still-competitive class.

Once the 2019 Altima is on the road, drivers may appreciate the car’s new dual-pinion electric power steering system that Nissan says improves feel and is quieter. All Altimas should benefit from dynamic updates that include monotube rear shocks and suspension reinforcements to make the car feel more responsive without adding unwanted harshness. As someone who spent a year in a 2013 Altima 2.5 SL and reviewed a more recently updated Altima 2.5 SV, I’m also interested in Nissan’s claim of lower NVH thanks to the new platform and engines. Although the 2016-2018 models improved the Altima’s NVH performance, the earlier cars’ engine and transmission were never on the quiet side.

Some 2019 Altimas will come with Active Noise Cancellation to make the cabin a bit quieter, but it’s the 8.0-inch touchscreen most will notice when they step inside an Altima. Every 2019 Altima has that screen, which is mounted higher on the center stack than the too-low placement on the outgoing model. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and push-button start with hands-free keyless entry are all standard. The latest version of Nissan’s so-called Zero Gravity seats are also standard and, again, as someone who spent a year in a last-gen Altima, I can tell you that those Zero Gravity seats were a real highlight for a car intended to be an easy and comfortable commuter. Every 2019 Altima will also get a 7.0-inch color display in the center of the instrument cluster.

What you won’t find standard on the 2019 Altima S or SR trims is Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, a comprehensive package of active safety tech. The tech, which is standard on the SV, SL, and Platinum trims, includes a number of features that, arguably, are kind of like your first smartphone in that you never knew you needed them until you used them on a regular basis. The most important part of the package is automatic emergency braking, which can apply the brakes if the car detects a potential obstacle ahead. The SV, SL, and Platinum trims also get lane departure mitigation and an adaptive cruise control system that can function in stop-and-go traffic. A Rear Automatic Braking system is new and, like the similar system we’ve seen on Infinitis, can apply the brakes to avoid a potential collision when you’re reversing (after providing visual and audio cues to the driver that something’s up). Although it’s a shame that 2019 Altima S and SR customers won’t have these features standard—Toyota makes a suite of active safety tech standard on every Camry and Honda includes its version on every Accord—we hope this strategy will allow Nissan to keep the lower trims more affordable.

On the other side of the spectrum, loaded 2019 Altimas will include a nine-speaker Bose sound system, LED headlights and LED fog lights, and leather seats with perforated inserts. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available, but unlike the Accord, ventilated front seats and heated outboard rear seats are not. The new Altima is the latest new car to wear a floating roof design, but that bold design choice isn’t the only detail that may make an impression on those familiar with the outgoing Altima’s design. The Altima’s wheelbase has been stretched by 1.9 inches, and the car is about 1 inch longer, wider, and lower than the last-gen model. The front overhang has also been trimmed.

For the more practically minded buyers, the 2019 Altima will also likely build on the outgoing car’s already impressive EPA ratings. The 2019 Altima 2.5 could hit an EPA-rated 40 mpg on the highway (non-SR trims of the 2018 model are rated 27/38 mpg city/highway), and Nissan suggests the Altima VC-Turbo model might hit an EPA-rated 35 mpg on the highway. A limited-edition launch model based on the VC-Turbo model will be offered this summer; otherwise, the 2019 Altima goes on sale this fall.

So the new 2019 Nissan Altima has some cool standard and available features, offers all-wheel drive, and its base engine is more powerful than before yet the car will probably be more efficient than its predecessor. Will that be enough to convince buyers already set on an Accord or another midsize sedan to reconsider the Altima? As an increasing number of buyers skip midsize sedans altogether for a crossover, the 2019 Altima at least looks like it has what it needs to maintain its relevance in this still-competitive class.
