i finished watching the uglies adaptation and it was mid...... except casting for shay was so good and i appreciate the racial diversity in casting. Idk I feel like adaptations should only exist if they have a vision for interpreting the source material but i am so so biased bc i wanted a sapphic interpretation of tally and shay

Uglies
This novel explores the depth on how people view themselves on the outside. It begins following Tally a curious 16 year old about to undergo major cosmetic surgery. This is what they call the transformation to pretties. Tally very much wants to go to the pretties and be with her friend Peris.  Though through a night of excitement and trouble she meets a new friend Shay who changes her perspective and takes her through a rollercoaster of adventure and danger. Tally must decide what is best for her through her 16th year.
Tally is a very brave young girl who is trying to understand herself. She wants to be like her family, but plans change once she's friends with Shay. Tally soon has a hard time truly knowing what she should do with her life. There is a difference between the two friends. Tally loves the fact of becoming a pretty. Though Shay is the opposite and would love to embrace her ugly. They incorporate the sides of positive and negative to your emotions.
This novel was created by Scott Westerfeild. When this book series was made it became his most achieved novel. Westerfeld is now making four new books that will go along with the series. What I think Westerfeild was trying to say by creating this novel was that no matter how bad you may think you look on the outside, the inside is what counts. Tally soon discovers this with the help from her new found friend Shay. Though the specials are still out for all of the outsiders who don’t want to change.
The uglies is a very relatable book to many people with self consciousness. Tally is a character who resembles those people. Her battle is mostly with herself as she tries to decide if she is pretty enough. Though this book is a dystopian many young teens and adults can learn a value from it.  Showing the best part of yourself is what Shay was trying to tell Tally the whole time. This was also conveying readers to have the emotion Tally may have been feeling through the whole process.
Once you read this novel the emotional journey with Tally and Shay begins. Westerfeld’s accomplishment will help you understand the hard times of self hate. When I read this I felt sad and mentally exhausted, just because of how much hate Tally showed for herself. Also I believe he wrote this dystopian to show others the mental struggle. He could have even wrote it because of an experience he had himself growing up. Self image is an extreme mental fight that everyone goes through at one point or another. He just shows us the background and moments we can just let it go and be our true selves like Shay.
