violet faith lennox is diane galindo’s & richard lennox’s youngest child. born three weeks early on 18 june 1996 at aspen valley hospital in aspen, colorado. the very moment they held their daughter ( who they lovingly referred to as a ‘ blessing ‘ ) in their open arms, they knew that their family was finally complete.

her mother ( diane ) is her parents’ pride & joy. as the eldest daughter of wealthy wall street executives, she has done nothing but make her family proud her entire life. growing up, her dream in life was to help her father’s business but her career quickly changed course when she decided to pursue a career in medicine. the new york native eventually ended up going to harvard medical school in boston, massachusetts where she would end up meeting her future husband. to this day, dr. galindo is one of the most recognizable names in medicine & is world renowned for her work as a reproductive endocrinologist ( fertility specialist ).

her father on the other hand ( richard ) was born to an influential family in los angeles, california. from an early age, he was exposed to the spotlight due to the fact that his own father was governor of california & hoped to become president one day. however, things seemed to go off course the day the former governor was caught in his own cheating scandal all while being married to a former pageant queen. scandal erupted when the politician not only cheated on his stunning wife with a young secretary but when his mistress announced to the world that she was pregnant. the entire news circuit covered this affair for months & the governor resigned from his position when news broke that he urged his mistress to get an abortion.

following the scandal, the family fell out of the public spotlight. they spent years trying to repaint their public image after it was tarnished for nothing but selfish desire. approximately ten years later, the family made news again but this time about their newly found faith in god joining the long list of religious right wing politicians. richard’s father felt as if the only way to redeem himself was to devote himself to god. after years of distancing themselves from the catholic church, the family dove right back in which became the start of their fundamental catholic values that ruled every aspect of their lives.

as the only son in the family, richard’s parents had high expectations for him. however, he seemed to have different plans for himself that didn’t involve making his family proud or practicing what they preached. as an undergraduate student at yale, his interests were far & few between. his days only seemed to consist of sleeping with random women & binge drinking to his heart’s content. he knew that he didn’t have to be an astounding student because he had a giant trust fund waiting for him at home. but after a drunk driving accident that resulted in a 40 year old woman’s hospitalization & his own arrest, richard knew he had to clean up his act.

he eventually followed his family’s lead & became an ultra religious catholic. he even managed to boost up his grades & get an academic scholarship to harvard law school where he met diane. diane didn’t come from a strong religious background. in fact, she liked to tell people that she only believed in science & didn’t have faith or trust in a superior figure. but when she met a young richard lennox, her entire world was turned upside down. she let him into her life, converted to catholicism, & the two got married after three years of dating. flash forward to 1992. the married couple is moving to aspen, colorado for diane’s new job at an upscale hospital. they even received a generous check from richard’s parents to buy a mansion in the mountains !!

life for the couple in colorado was serene. they eventually welcomed their first child into the world ( a daughter ) & a few months later, their families moved to help them raise their children. both diane & richard always wanted a big family due to their catholic faith. they both agreed they would stop after 6 kids, however, their minds were quickly changed when she became pregnant with violet.

her pregnancy was extremely difficult to say the least. between being on bed rest for months & frequent hospitalizations, she didn’t know if she could do this again. on top of her own health issues, she also had problems with her unborn child. there was even a night where they thought they would lose violet after diane experienced unexplainable bleeding & her fellow colleagues at the hospital couldn’t detect a heartbeat.

luckily, they were able to find a heartbeat after 6 minutes of deafening silence & hushed prayers for a miracle. after that night, they knew that their daughter was a blessing which is why they agreed to give her the middle name faith which symbolizes their unrequited devotion to god.

eventually, violet was born !! she was born three weeks early & spent a week in the icu but overall she was healthy. she was a bit underweight but she was miraculously healthy. but after everything the family had been through, they decided that violet would be their last child.

as a child, violet did every thing her parents had asked of her. their faith played a large role in her upbringing which is why she spent every sunday inside of church.

by the time she was 8 years old, her family decided to move to new york city due to the fact that her mom received a prestigious job on the upper east side. at the age of 8, violet was already a competitive gymnast who’s likes included spending time with her family, competing, & going to school. even then she knew she could do everything she loved in another state which is why she didn’t put up much of a fight when she was told that they would be moving across the country.

moving from snowy open colorado to the upper east side of manhattan was definitely a culture shock for violet even at an early age. nonetheless, she eventually got used to new york city life & to this day she doesn’t think she would survive a week in colorado.

even after she moved to a new part of the country, violet remained devoted to gymnastics & her family. she had dreams of one day going to the olympics for gymnastics & everyone who knew her saw her potential. she even competed in world events & became a household name !! although, her parents often emphasized that school & religion come first which is why they made her & her sister attend a private catholic school all the way through high school.

in high school, she was a classic goody two shoes church girl. she was a strong student who received perfect grades in order to please her parents. for the longest time, she didn’t have time for anything other than school & sports but that changed by the time she was 16.

despite attending an all girls school, violet met her first boyfriend through one of her mutual friends. & like all stereotypical teen romances, it was love at first site. she was so infatuated with him that she was willing to put everything in her life on the back burner in order to focus on him.

& by the time she was 18, she received numerous academic & sports scholarships to prestigious colleges. however, violet decided to take a gap year in order to spend more time with her boyfriend of two years. she knew that she would eventually go to college but she wanted to make some time for herself first. her parents weren’t exactly happy about her decision due to the fact that she has big shoes to fill but they eventually came around the idea & were even happy for their daughter & her wholesome catholic boyfriend.

during her gap year, they spent an entire year traveling the world. they went to bali, greece, peru, brazil, iceland, dubai, thailand, argentina, & morocco. throughout the course of the year, violet documented her travel on her instagram & other social media platforms which is when she started gaining a lot of followers who wanted to watch her travel the world with the love of her life. before her influx of instagram followers, not a lot of people outside the world of gymnastics knew who she was. people of course knew who her parents were ( a famous doctor & lawyer ) but the world did not really know who exactly violet lennox was.

by the end of her gap year violet already had over 1 million followers on instagram !! & she was already getting paid doing what she loves which is travel the world. & since all of this happened during her year off, violet ended up telling her parents that she didn’t want to go to college which damaged their relationship as a result.

since her parents were so unsupportive of her decision to not go to college & ultimately quit gymnastics, violet ended up moving out of her house & moved in with her boyfriend at only the age of 19. & because her parents were completely unsupportive of her decision not to attend college, they cut her off financially & she was forced to make a living for herself. by this point, her career as a social media influencer was booming so she was already making a lot of money just through promoting detox teas, teeth whitening kits, etc.

it may seem as if life for violet was perfect by this point despite her falling out with her parents. however, that was not the case. even though she fooled the entire world by thinking that she had a perfect relationship, her boyfriend was incredibly abusive towards her & had been ever since the two started dating. although he was never physically abusive, he was mentally, emotionally, & verbally abusive. for years violet made excuses for him & blamed herself for their problems which only made her feel more miserable than she already was. this was her first real relationship & she genuinely thought that they were destined to be together even though she was severely unhappy.

he would constantly cheat, manipulate her, make fun of her appearance & insecurities, & wouldn’t let her do anything without his permission. the two were together for three years & there even was a time where violet became pregnant but quickly had an abortion without him knowing as soon as she found out. just three months after living together, she finally found the courage to break up with him. although it wasn’t easy at first, she’s thankful that she finally got out of a dangerous relationship. she also understands the dangers of social media better than anyone else because she fooled the world into thinking that she was in a happy loving relationship when that was far from the truth.

when violet told the world about their breakup ( most likely in an instagram live or an instagram story ) she ended up losing millions of followers. the majority of her followers only followed her to watch her travel the world with her boyfriend so once they found out that they were no longer together ; they didn’t see the point in following her anymore.

for an entire year following her breakup, violet began to spiral out of control. she started using drugs, alcohol, & partying as coping mechanisms in order to help her move on & forget about everything she had endured. that of course didn’t work but that didn’t stop her from partying every single night of the week & ending up in a stranger’s bed. eventually, she even leaked her own sex tape & naked pictures to the press in hopes that the press coverage would help make up for the millions of followers she lost on instagram.

& as she expected, the world would not stop talking about her sex tape for months. she gained the most followers she has ever done & eventually she got real modeling jobs as a result of her popularity. she hasn’t exactly told the world that she was the one who leaked the 20 minute video but everyone in their immediate circle knows she did it & also knows that she has other videos lying around for ‘ emergency ’ situations.

however, her parents cut off all contact with her following her scandal & it is still something that cuts deep two years later. she tells herself & everyone around her that she doesn’t need a family but everyone knows that’s a lie. it’s just a lie she keeps on telling herself to feel better about herself.

she became the youngest victoria’s secret angel at the age of 20 !!

although she has become more of an actual model rather an instagram model, she still stays loyal to her social media platforms which is why she has over 100 million followers.

for someone who is incredibly smart, she pretends to be dumb sometimes. she doesn’t think that guys like smart girls so she dumbs herself down. but she could also be a ditz at times ( unintentionally ).

she likes to think of herself as approachable but she also knows that she can be intimidating. nonetheless, she tries to be nice to everyone who comes her way unless they say the wrong thing to her & then she switches on her mean girl switch that comes far too easy for her.

even though violet is a lot to deal with, she is a nice person !! although she does have a flair for the dramatics & denies being dramatic all the time. she also likes to think of herself as a ‘ good girl ’ even though she is far from one. she loves sex & isn’t afraid to shy away from that but she still tells people that she’s good or an angel because it makes herself feel better about herself.

she also goes to confession 1-2 times a week to pray for her sins in order to get into heaven. she thinks with the amount of adultery she commits on a daily basis she needs to pray for her sins otherwise she won’t go to heaven & she thinks she looks way better in white than in red.

if you do her wrong, she will go out of her way to make your life a living hell. she is incredibly protective over the people in her life so she will do just about anything for them including berating people. revenge might as well be her last name !!

she may be loud and unnecessary at times but she is kind hearted and does mean well. even if she does have a bad way of showing it at times.

miscellaneous ;;

since she comes from a strict traditional upbringing, she was taught that being anything other than straight is wrong. so when violet first started experimenting with girls & even developed feelings for one, she told herself that she was going to hell. this is one of the reasons why she has not come out of the closet or has even come to terms with her sexuality. she denies all past same sex encounters & relationships which isn’t healthy. but since her parents disowned her following her sex tape, she knows that they would hate her more than they already do. if they ever found out that their daughter was anything but straight they would lose their minds & she’s still hoping that one day they could repair their relationship. apparently being bisexual is worse than having a sex tape !!

when she was a competitive gymnast for the united states national team, she was often put on strict diets in order to keep up. as a result of the strict dieting & unrealistic body images, violet developed bulimia as early as 12 years old. so when she quit gymnastics after deciding not to attend college, she was happy. she loved the sport but hated the pressure. even to this day, the sport isn’t actually sure what happened to her because she was an olympic hopeful. they all thought that she could have been the next gold medalist but she values her own mental health & sanity over a couple of medals. & even though she sought help for her eating disorder that reared ugly heads at times, she did slip up a lot while she was with her boyfriend who would make fun of her appearance. even now she isn’t 100% but she is better than she has ever been.

violet also believes that the world revolves around her. many people may find her confidence to be annoying or superficial but she takes pride in it because it took her so long to learn how to love herself after being with her first boyfriend.

speaking of relationships, she’s terrible at them. she often runs away when things become too serious, manipulates the people she’s with, or breaks up with them for no reason. her logic is that she wants to hurt someone before they have the chance to hurt her. she still has yet to understand that the rest of the world isn’t like her ex but her past still haunts her every time she catches feelings.

✦ first things first, elissa actually comes from a wealthy family, just not that noble. her norwegian mother was a nobody while her american father was a self-made businessman. their love was unexpected given their different social & finacial backgrounds which resulted in her mother’s move to nyc. but they were happy ; and that happiness was only maximized with the birth of their daughter.

✦ with her father’s growing hotel business, it was safe to say that elissa grew up with everything her heart could’ve possibly desired, however, she was far from being the typical rich girl. while kids in her position would take advantage of her parent’s financial situation and live like kings, this little girl was self-reliant from day one and aimed to achieve her own dreams in life.

✦ and that dream was... *drum roll pls* figure skating ! it was a full time, year-around commitment but with intense training, strict diet plan and hard work, huge talent and drive the little girl became an athlete her parents were more than proud of which was the main reason why they enrolled her into luxor academy. especially after the dean promised that for the right amount of money, he’ll make sure elissa got all the private tutors and trainers her heart desired. so when she won her first U.S. champion title he made sure the whole world knew he was the one responsible (aka he bragged so much even the old ladies rolled their eyes).

✦ with her busy (and definitely personalized) schedule her social life in luxor was basically... non existent. even when she did have the time to socialize or actually do something like a teenager would, she preferred to stick to her small circle of trusted friends or just watch a good movie.

✦ as for her love life, the girl.... well, given the fact she barely has time for anything and even when she does she’s not exactly sociable, she’s definitely somewhat inexperienced. however, it wasn’t something people noticed due to her high level of confidence. nobody dared to question whenever or not she even had a boyfriend, yet alone had sex when she gave them a glare that could’ve easily start another ice age. overall, it wasn’t something she was open about ; nor particularly cared.

✦ &&& more about her personality !! honestly, this girl is so stubborn she can probably go without eating just to prove a damn point. and tbh, she kind of has a problem with being in control too? she likes things in order and being in charge which is probably the main reason why she absolutely HATES failing. she also doesn’t easily trust people which explains why she comes across as somewhat cold and distant but do not be fooled ! she has a v sharp tongue & won’t hesitate to throw a sarcastic comment your way!

✦ overall, it takes time for her to open up, but when she does that soft and goofy side of her comes out that only her closest friends get to see. she’s very motherly and protective over her friends (momma bear alert y’all!) and would even out herself in danger for them. also loyal to the very core so if you landed her as a friend you definitely won’t be sorry !

✦ christmas is her favorite holiday & she loves everything revolving it ! the decorations, the food, the corny christmas movies, snow, spirit.... so she always decorates her room way too early and leaves the decorations in way too late.

✦ due to her strict diet that involves a lot of healthy food and no alcohol, she’s a lightweight but WILL argue differently. she’s too proud to admit two glasses of wine can get her drunk.

✦ cried like a baby when mufasa died and susan forgot about narnia.

✦ completely indifferent (a little bit amused) by the rivalry between two schools.

✦ has a private, very strict coach that lives in close proximity of campus.

✦ practices every day for at least four to five hours which includes on ice training and off ice (like ballet, gym & pilates)

✦ adores og horror movies like psycho, the shinning, halloween, jaws, the silence of the lambs...

✦ her biggest goal in life is to go to the 2022 olympics and get that gold !!!

✦ and last but not least (TW: DRUG USE), she suffered through a p nasty fall on live tv during her competition two months ago when she tried to land a triple axel (a big overachiever what can i say) which resulted in a p nasty knee injury which meant she had to take ‘time off’ but she’s too stubborn to listen to her doctors so she pushes herself and takes painkillers to ease the pain. (lowkey addicted by now)

When newly minted film director Michael Gracey met actress Rebecca Ferguson to pitch her his film (still then only an idea, albeit one to which Hugh Jackman had committed), he knocked on her front door wearing a beanie and clutching a television set. “Can you show me to your living room?” he asked. Ferguson raised an eyebrow. “Did I want, then, to do a musical? Hell, no,” she recalls.

Unlike the chart-topping former X Factor contestant with whom she shares her name, she makes no claims to be a singer. Gracey introduced his montage of video clips with razzmatazz. “The year is 1880,” he began, with a clap of his hands. By the time he was done, Ferguson felt “electrified”, certain she wanted to be a part of this all-singing, all-dancing vision. That part turned out to be the one of Jenny Lind, the world-famous Swedish soprano, so good at her trade that Queen Victoria befriended her and PT Barnum (played by Jackman) recruited her to his travelling circus (which also includes a dancing Zac Efron). The Greatest Showman features music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the duo who worked on La La Land.

It was canny of Gracey to cast Ferguson as Lind. Even if the actress’s own singing is not used in the final film (that’s a decision still to be made in the editing room), her speaking voice is pure opera with its deep timbre and clipped clarity, heightened by the sort of meticulous enunciation that comes with not being an English native; like Lind, Ferguson grew up in Sweden. Starlets and ingénues don’t speak like Ferguson, who in person is neither girlish nor a slip of a thing but in secure command of her significant charisma. “In my life I never sat on my arse waiting for this or that,” says the 33-year-old, her pale blue eyes bright. “I actually make things happen.”

And happen they have. Before The Great Showman hits the big screen, Ferguson stars with Michael Fassbender in The Snowman, in cinemas this month. “My publicist keeps calling to say, can we talk about The Show... No, The Snow... Oh, Jesus, one of the men!” says the actress, laughing. They are, however, very different films. The Snowman, based on a novel by Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbø, is a spartan spine-chiller, directed by Tomas Alfredson, another Swede, whose previous work includes Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The shoot for the film began in Norway the day after The Girl on the Train wrapped in America (Ferguson played Anna). “I wouldn’t worry too much about my workload. After all, I had four months with Michael,” says Ferguson, who is in turn knowing, funny, conspiratorial; in sum, an excellent raconteur.

We meet in the garden of a London square. The actress has rented an apartment near the Thames while she is shooting Mission: Impossible 6. She entered the high-grossing franchise in the fifth Mission: Impossible as Ilsa Faust, a sassy, gun-wielding assassin who may come to Tom Cruise’s rescue. She remembers the experience the first time round as “like going through labour: it was exciting, it was new, it was so goddam painful.” But then Ferguson went from smoking cigarillos (sometimes a cigar) and eating like a normal person, to training for six hours a day on a heavily restricted diet. “This time I’ve kept up my fitness so it’s not so hard. I could now practically sleep on the Pilates reformer, I love it so much,” and she inhales on a vaporiser that looks like a bullet.

Until recently, when Ferguson was not on location, she based herself in Simrishamn in Sweden, a small fishing village where her 10-year-old son, Isaac, lives during school term time with his father, from whom Ferguson split a couple of years ago. Now she’s renovating a house in London and her plan is to divide her time between the two countries. She has a new partner, who is English and “doesn’t work in the business”, she adds protectively, and although the travelling her job requires makes motherhood a challenge, “we make it work,” she says with a shrug. “It could be so hard, but it’s not because everyone gets on and supports each other.”

She pulls the sleeves of her sweatshirt over her wrists. “I feel British,” she says. “Mum brought us up that way.” In the family home in Stockholm, she and her elder sister kept rats, mice and budgerigars, watched Cracker and Inspector Morse, and learnt English manners. “Never answer a question with yes or no, always with a sentence,” she tells me diligently. Their summers were spent scaling Helvellyn in the Lake District, “until I discovered French boys, and then we went to stay with my aunt in France”. Her parents divorced when she was three and she lived between their houses. “We didn’t have a lot,” she recalls, “but because of Mum we never felt poor.”

Ferguson paints her mother, who originally hails from East Anglia, as a big character who has cast a colourful influence over her life, in many shades of Edina Monsoon. For a while she translated songs for Abba and lent them her wardrobe. “I think my mother finds my androgynous style very mundane,” says Ferguson, gesturing to her Acne black tailored trousers. She laughs – it’s a very big laugh. It was Ferguson’s mother who enrolled her in Adolf Fredrik’s Music School, a primary education with a musical and performing focus. “I think she wanted a lot for me,” she says.

At 15 she won the lead role in a national soap opera. So she switched school for a TV studio to shoot two and a half episodes every day each week. Her mother told her, “You’re going to pay rent now because you’re a working woman who is earning more than me, so you give back to the family.” Ferguson still respects her for it: “I learnt then the value of making money and taking responsibility for myself.” And she liked it. A year later, when the show had ended, she felt the ache of being separated from her peers. “I remember thinking, I’m just not a part of that world any more. I wasn’t going to university, I couldn’t, I’d left school early. By 16, I’d left home, too. My friends were older and I’d begun to drift from one friendship to the next.” With no roles coming in, she worked in “day care, restaurants, shoe shops, anything just to support myself ”, until a television series took her to Miami Beach, and although that went “tits up”, she says, “it didn’t really matter because I was 17 and I got to live in another country for a year”.

Unusually in the world of entertainment – where women’s careers are so often made or abandoned by the time they’re 27, the industry’s unofficial line in the sand – Ferguson’s international break came at the age of 30 when she was cast as Elizabeth Woodville opposite Max Irons in The White Queen for the BBC. “I got the part and three days later we were shooting,” she says. “I never really asked, what is happening here? Where am I going? Do I want this trip? I just decided to go with it. I thought, why not?’’

im actually a piece of garbage i should not be trying to do this

if you take a peek at how the prompts are split up, there’s one box of color per week. so this is begging for one pairing per week. gonna have Chlonette be my blue box :) so for the next seven days i’ll fulfill the prompts with the two of them before switching to a new pairing!

“Oh, dammit!”

Marinette called out from the kitchen with her mouth full. “What?”

Chloe was standing in front of the apartment windows with her hands on her hips. “Are you seeing what’s outside right now?”

“The sky, hopefully.”

“No! I mean what’s in the sky! Come, this is an emergency!”

She rolled her eyes, left her empty breakfast plate on the kitchen table, and looped around the corner, jokingly mirroring Chloe’s position in front of the window. “What’s the emergency?”

Chloe scoffed and turned to Marinette. “Are you serious right now? You see this, don’t you?”

“Yes, I see it, what’s your point?”

“What the hell!? That’s my point!”

Marinette’s eyes widened and she laid a gentle hand on Chloe’s shoulder. “Oh my gosh, wait. I’m being so insensitive. Sometimes I forget that you’re so sheltered you’ve never seen snow before. This must be a shock for you.”

Chloe shrugged Marinette’s hand off with a glare while Marinette threw her head back and cackled. “Oh, shut up! That’s not what I meant!”

“Darling, it’s winter time. It’s cold out. It snows. These are all very normal things.”

“We were supposed to get our hair done today,” Chloe muttered. “I wanted to take you to that Indian restaurant I found the other day, too. We haven’t gone out in forever.”

Their apartment windows were completely whited out from all the snow that was falling. It was hard to see many of the buildings that were right next to theirs. It was more snow than they’d ever gotten in a while, and she was sure it wasn’t going to let up until later this evening. She wrinkled her nose. “Yeah, I don’t think this is weather to be going anywhere in.”

“You’d think it’d have the decency to warn us in advance when this sort of thing is going to happen.”

Marinette smirked. “It being the weather?”

“Obviously.”

“They’ve been talking about this on the news for like three days,” Marinette teased. “You just never check it. But it does look like it’s coming down way worse than they said it would. Doesn’t seem to safe to travel until it calms down.”

The sight of all her plans being covered up by inches of snow must have started annoying her because Chloe purposefully turned one of the armchairs away from the window and towards the front door before she sat down so that she wouldn’t have to look at it. She even crossed her arms and slung one knee over the other to make her displeasure clear. “I had plans, and they’re ruined....” she grumbled.

Marinette smiled fondly and moved to settle herself in Chloe’s lap, wrapping an arm over her shoulders. Chloe immediately hugged Marinette around the middle and leaned her head against hers. “We can always try to go out next weekend. I know you’re busy tomorrow. At least it won’t be violently snowing and we’ll have the whole weekend to ourselves. I’ll clear my schedule.”

“Ugh, I’m tired of being cooped up in here though,” Chloe complained. “I wanted to go out with you.”

Marinette hummed. “We can have a date in here. I’ll cook you dinner.”

“Mmmmm, only if we dress up tonight. With like candles and nice music, the whole shebang.”

“You know, you are surprisingly very cheesy.“

“God forbid I want to wine and dine you! Lord...”

Marinette pressed a kiss to the top of Chloe’s head and was at least happy to see that Chloe was smiling, but she knew how much Chloe hated having plans cancelled, especially when she went through so much trouble to plan them in advance. Something about having dates cancelled annoyed her even more. Plus, Chloe had a point. It was the holidays and they were both spending most of their time in their apartment to keep out of the cold. It would’ve been nice to get some fresh air even just for a little bit.

And then Marinette had an idea.

She shook Chloe’s shoulder and waited for her to look up at her. “Let’s go play in the snow!”

Chloe squinted. “What?”

“Play! In the snow!” Marinette said excitedly. “We can go out in the front courtyard, we can spend time together, and we get to go outside and enjoy the weather!”

“Marinette, it’s shit outside!”

“So?” She hopped out of Chloe’s lap and pulled her out of the chair, leading her to the back of the apartment where their bedroom was. Chloe still sounded too confused to put up much of a fight, and Marinette took advantage of her silence to start digging through her drawers for her thermals. “The snow’s already sticking and there’s at least five inches on the ground. Ah! We can have a snowball fight!”

Chloe was pressing fingers into her temples. “Darling, we are adults. Grown adults. With jobs. And salaries. And health insurance.”

Marinette sighed pitifully. “I understand what this is. You’re afraid you’re going to lose the snowball fight.”

“I’m not....what the hell, I’m not afraid I’m going to lose the snowball fight. It’s just that it’s a horror show outside, and I don’t want to ruin my new snow boots. Besides, I freaking rock at snowball fights!”

Marinette turned her back to her. “Debatable...”

Chloe gasped. “Excuse me!?”

“I dunno, babe,” Marinette sung, pulling out her snow boots and rifling through her closet for a warm sweater. “Kinda sounds like you’re overcompensating....”

“You little brat, move over!” Chloe bumped shoulders with Marinette and started throwing sweaters and scarves from her half of the closet behind her and onto the bed. “I’ll have you know, Adrien reigned me the ultimate snowball champion when we were six years old and I still have the medal he made me out of cardboard, so I’m legit.”

“Psh, like that means anything,” Marinette chuckled. “That was almost twenty years ago. I’m afraid you might have gotten a little rusty.”

Chloe was pulling off her sleeping pants and pulling on her thermals while Marinette layered on two sweaters. “You are so undeniably rude. I will not have you stand here calling my skills into question. You’re an absolute terror.”

Marinette stuck her tongue out. “You love it.”

“Alright. I’ll make you a deal.” It was really hard for Chloe to look imposing when she was wearing that bright yellow bumblebee sweater that Marinette had gotten her as a joke last year -- but always wore and never threw away despite how garish it looked -- but Marinette sobered up and nodded solemnly as she waited for the conditions. “If you, by some God given miracle, manage to beat me, I will.....go to the gym with you.”

Marinette burst out laughing. “Wait, no, that’s not good enough. You have to come into the weight rooms with me. You can’t just cheat, go on the elliptical for five minutes, and sneak into the Pilates class.”

“You enjoy my impeccable core strength, don’t lie and say you don’t.”

Marinette rolled her eyes. “Fine. Would’ve loved to have taken you camping so we could’ve gone outdoor rock climbing, but I guess I’ll take the gym.”

“I’m not doing that!” Chloe repeated for the tenth time. “Unlike some people I don’t enjoy dangling by rope from 500 meters up. Plus it’s outside! With bugs, and germs, and animals, and gross shit, and no, and ew, and kill me.”

“You have safety harnesses. And nature is good for you. We’d be in a cabin with freaking Wi-Fi. It’s healthy for you!”

“We do not share your death defying extreme sports hobby or your enthusiasm for the outdoors! Let it go!”

“Like I said,” Marinette grinned. “We’ll work up to it. Also, this coming from the woman who’s literally about to go outside and face the elements with me.”

“My honor is on the line. You have to put up yours too.”

“Fine, fine,” Marinette groaned. “If you win I will....dress up as Chat Noir for Adrien’s costume party next month.”

Chloe actually jumped in the air and screamed. “Holy shit, you are so getting your ass handed to you! Adrien bet me a hundred euros you wouldn’t do it, and he is going to look so stupid when he pays me.”

“You two are betting on this?”

Chloe paused. “....no sweetheart, never behind your back, I love you.”

Marinette gave her a flat look as she pulled her hat on. “Keep talking. You’re gonna be eating ice in a few minutes.”

Chloe yanked on her gloves. “You really underestimate how petty and ruthless I can be.”

“If I’ve handled it for five years, I can handle it now,” Marinette promised. They were both dressed, and Marinette gestured to the bedroom door. “First five hits to the face wins?”

Chloe finished pulling her hair into a bun and putting her hat on over it. Heaven forbid her hair get ruined because of a snow ball fight. “Child’s play, my dear. This will be over very quickly.”

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 84, December 2017

On Christmas Eve, Mum and I attended the Carols by Twilight - Christmas Eve event held at Max Pawsey Reserve near Fountain Gate. It’s my second time going to a local Carols event, my first being over 6 years ago. As always, the event is run and organised by Casey City Church with many guest speakers and singers performing on stage including Andrew De Silva, He Planned Us and Gary Pinto. Of course, these Carols have a very Christian in orientation and whilst I don’t believe in God per se, it’s highly irrelevant. For me, it’s about being involved with the City of Casey community and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas...love, joy, peace, family, friends and being grateful for what you have in life.

We didn’t end up staying long as the weather decided to turn cold with a bitter, icy wind blowing across the reserve but it was still nice that we made the effort to listen to a few of the carols. After grabbing some coffees at Maccas, we decided to finally check out some Christmas lights. I was determined to visit the hugely popular display down at Hugo Court in Narre Warren to see what all the fuss was about. Getting down there early and finding a side street or court to park in is key because the traffic banks up very quickly.

We started by walking down Song Street with one house featuring two snow machines, creating lots of white foamy suds. It looked really cool. Making our way down to Hugo Court, there was literally people from the local CFA directing the crowd with glowing red wands. The moment we set foot into the court, it was bedlam. A cascade of brightly lit LED lights, inflatable Santas, Penguins, Snowmen, Reindeer, flashing signs, a radio station playing Christmas songs. But instead of being overwhelmed, I found it to be a truly magical experience. I had a ball taking photos and letting the atmosphere sink in.

The only downside was getting out of the area. A few drivers were getting impatient and rowdy. There was huge potential for road rage but thankfully Mum and I dodged a bullet. You just have to be really patient and be prepared that it can take up to 20 minutes to get yourself back onto Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. But besides that, it was definitely worth going to. Hopefully I don’t leave it this late next year!

On Christmas Day, My parents and I had a busy morning ahead getting all the food prepared and cooked as well as decorating the outside patio area. It didn’t take long for me to start feeling exhausted but it came together really well. It’s a big area of strength for me, the creative side. We always go all out when it comes to Christmas and it’s easily my favourite part of the day.

In the afternoon, we had relatives over from my step-dad’s side of the family. We had a lovely roast for lunch which included chicken, ham, pork, potatoes, pumpkin, beans, peas and carrots. The conversations at the table were difficult for me to join in with as usual and when the topic turned to sexual predators and pedophiles, I was ready to exit stage left. I just feel so disturbed and uncomfortable hearing that stuff and that’s only so much I can handle before I have to leave.

In the late afternoon, we opened up our Christmas presents under the tree. I always find this experience to be both overwhelming and awkward. At least now that I’ve got an official diagnosis, it would explain why I’m not as “expressive” as I should be. From the outside looking in, most people would think I’m ungrateful due to my lack of excitement but it’s far from the case. It’s more I have no idea what to say besides thank you. I couldn’t be more grateful, I just don’t often show it with my non-verbal cues and body language (Autism 101).

In the evening, we had my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins come over for dinner. I decided to have a Nanna nap before they arrived as I was feeling buggered as. The food we served up was similar to our lunch with a selection of chicken, pork and ham plus coleslaw, potatoes and pasta salad. We engaged in the usual tradition of pulling Christmas crackers, wearing paper hats and reading the lame jokes inside of them.

It’s true that I’m still very reserved, socially awkward and sensitive even around my family but it’s something that I’m continuing to work on embracing and accepting. It was a really long day for me overall but the upside is that we didn’t have to travel anywhere today and the weather was lovely throughout the day.

On Boxing Day aka “Recovery Day”, we spent the morning sitting around the dining table eating bacon and eggs for breakfast, talking about how dodgy our current government are and how the oil companies are ripping us off when it comes to the price of petrol. I honestly felt like a zombie crawling out of bed after all the food and alcohol I consumed yesterday. Thankfully, no hangover though! Then comes to fun part of cleaning everything up and packing away all the decorations. One step at a time though.

I spent most of the afternoon just resting up and trying to catch up on some sleep. The last thing I wanted to do was rush out to the Boxing Day sales. Seriously FUCK THAT! I’d rather shop online to be honest. In fact, I decided to buy a few Christmas sweaters from eBay ready for next Christmas. My cat Lotus decided to join me for a nap for the first time ever on my bed. It’s good to see that she’s finally warmed up to my bedroom and my bed.

On Wednesday morning, Mum and I both had well overdue full body Chinese massages at Best Body Massage in Eden Rise, Berwick. Best Body is basically just Top 1 Therapy trading under a different business name but offering the same deals. I opted for a deep tissue massage with hot stones which only cost me $45 for a whole hour. The guy did a very thorough job getting all of those knots undone and relieving a lot of tension through my back, shoulders, neck and spine. Pretty much over a month’s worth of stress, anxiety and muscle soreness.

This place is still unfortunately plagued with the same issues as Top 1 Therapy. Don’t expect to get much conversation from your massage therapist unless you’re fluent in Mandarin. Also, they could really benefit from having a staff member act as a permanent receptionist and door greeter as the guy doing my massage had to constantly rush off to attend to phone calls and customers dropping in. Basically, they’re lacking in the customer service department but considering I’m only paying $45 instead of $100 and the therapists are highly skilled in what they do, I can let the cons slide. http://edenrisevillage.com.au/store...

On Thursday morning, Mum and I visited the Cranbourne Hyundai Used Car Dealership to begin the search for my fourth car. We were both wearing our invisible “JUST LOOKING” t-shirts as I’m still extremely guarded and weary when it comes to car salesmen. Thankfully the guy who looked after us, Rod, was quite easy going and pleasant to deal with. He didn’t pressure us to make a sale at all, nor was he holding “grand sale” balloons like Pennywise The Dancing Clown (A sure bet to run in the opposite direction!).

I brought along my list of potential cars that I wanted to have a look at including a 2014 Hyundai i30 Active GD2, a 2013 Kia Cerato S TD and a 2011 Ford Fiesta Zetec WS. I was leaning the hardest towards the i30 and even briefly sat in the car to check out some of the features. I wrote down some “must haves” including a CD player, keyless entry, rego, 3 year warranty, low kilometers under 100k and priced under $15,000. It pretty much ticked all those boxes but I refused to sign any paperwork yet. On Thursday night, I attended my Body Balance class with Rowena at YMCA Casey RACE. It’s been a couple of weeks since I last went to a group fitness class so evidently I was feeling pretty out of practice tonight but it didn’t take long to pick things up. Rowena had a strong Irish accent and was very bubbly throughout the class.

We did our usual sequence of exercises during the class including: Tai-Chi Warmup (Swan Dive, Overhead arm circles), Sun Salutations (Forward Fold, Downward Facing Dog, Plank, Baby Cobra), Standing Strength & Balances (Warrior 2, Sun Warrior, Side Angle Pose, Triangle Pose, Half Moon Pose), Pilates (Bicycle Crunches, Firefly, Arm and Leg balances, Knee to Nose), Twists & Hamstring Stretches (Butterfly Forward Fold, Serpentine Twist with Leg Extension) and Relaxation. https://www.lesmills.com/workouts/f...

On Friday morning, Mum and I returned to the Cranbourne Hyundai Used Car Dealership for a second look. Thankfully I didn’t have to deal with any Max Kirwin type used car salesman (Good one Max? More like get the fuck away from me Max!) as Rod was there again. As I was walking through the middle of the yard, one of the cars immediately caught my attention. It was a dark blue coloured 2015 Hyundai Accent sedan. On closer inspection, it pretty much ticked all the boxes on my wishlist and inside I knew that this was “the one”.

Rod sat myself and Mum down inside his office. The space was clinical white and undecorated aside from the Hyundai logo and a few certificates on the wall. The anxiety levels were building rapidly inside of me but I knew that if I didn’t put the car on hold today, I would probably regret it. Still I find the whole process of signing contracts and paperwork to be extremely daunting. After sorting out some technical issues, we managed to get the ball rolling and Rod even put a personalised “SOLD” sign inside the car for me. I’ll be finalising the transaction and picking it up next week if all goes well.

On Friday night, I went to an RPM Express class with Laura at YMCA Casey RACE in Cranbourne East. Being the Christmas holidays and also the fact that it was wet and humid outside, there was only 3 people in tonight’s class but it was no surprise. I was still determined to get a really good workout done and I decided to turn up the resistance quite a few times up to 40-50%. The mountain climbing sections were easily the hardest for me but I was burning heaps through my knees, glutes and thighs.

I was also more focused on the wattage display and tried hard to get it over 170-200W. I was a good feeling pushing myself as hard as I could on the bike and being an express class, it was much shorter than usual. https://www.lesmills.com/workouts/f...

2017 has been a year of major growth for me. From having the strength and courage to turn down and walk away from people and situations that no longer serve me well to having emotional breakdowns in front of my former personal trainer to getting counselling and a formal diagnosis for mild Autism. I've done a lot of personal development, worked on improving my mental health issues and put myself out of my comfort zone (Do It In A Dress charity event, work Christmas function, Yoga Retreat in Moggs Creek).

It's been a huge year for fitness, trying out new things (Strength & Conditioning, Bootcamp, CrossFit, Water Workout, Swimming, Spa and Sauna) and pushing myself really hard to achieve results. There's been plenty of bumps in the road along the way from changing gyms to yoga studios closing down but none of these things have hindered me.

It's been a really tough year financially for me but I've always tried to persevere and get myself through it. I didn't attend as many local gigs as I would have liked to this year but many hurdles got in the way. Hopefully my attendance will pick up in 2018 as I find a better way to balance my life. However, I feel like my contribution was still significant in terms of writing reviews, band promotion, buying merch and sharing band related posts.

Thank you to all of my family and friends for sticking by me and supporting me this year.

MY GOALS FOR 2018 SO FAR 1. Buying myself a new car, probably an ex-demo 2016 Hyundai i30 or similar at Cranbourne Hyundai.

2. Joining an art/painting/life drawing class in Berwick.

4. Continuing to write blogs, reviews, interviews with Behind The Scene and supporting the local music scene. Increasing my attendance at local gigs.

5. Regular yoga classes with Keren Gurrieri at Body Yoga.

6. PT sessions/Group sessions at The Yard Strength & Fitness with Mandi Herauville and Erynne McCrorey.

7. Burning body fat and gaining lean muscle around the arms, legs, thighs, stomach, back, hips, glutes etc. Losing another 5-10kg.

8. Joining a support group to help with my mental health issues and emotional wellbeing e.g. GROW group, The Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria (ADAVIC).

9. Joining another cooking class at Balla Balla Community Centre.

10. Continuing to work on improving my self-confidence, self-care and personal development to become a better person.

11. Continuing to attend Group Fitness classes and seminars at YMCA Casey ARC and YMCA Casey RACE. Trying new classes including Aqua Cycle, Aqua Yoga, Virtual fitness classes.

12. Volunteering at an Animal Shelter, caring for domestic pets.

Some people were meant for football, others for Shakespeare. Those who were meant to do both are few and far between, but there is at least one such performer and his name is Bailey Chase. Football brought him to Duke University, and when his playing days were over he followed his next dream to L.A, but after being type-cast in roles of the good-looking jock, Chase knew he wanted more. The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art was his next destination, where he studied Shakespeare, and from there he never looked back. With roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Saving Grace and Longmire under his belt, Chase is now on not just one but two cult-like resurrected shows: 24: Legacy and Twin Peaks. If all that doesn’t keep this busy actor and father of three busy enough, he recently added Author to his resume with Spiritual Gangsta: The Search For Truth, an entertaining and witty memoir/self-help book about trying to find yourself and success. The Overhead Compartment was fortunate to meet up with Bailey Chase, go over a few plays, read a few verses, and find out what makes this gifted actor tick.

OC: You were a college athlete playing football as a linebacker at Duke. How did you get from there to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art?

BC: A 737? Kidding… I moved to LA to pursue a boyhood dream but once I got out here I discovered I had no idea what I was doing. I’m a big believer in being prepared when opportunity knocks. The initial acting roles I was offered were jock/beefcake roles. I saw a need to dig deeper, challenge myself and strengthen my craft.

OC: How good were you at football?

BC: I was All-State, but not All-American.

OC: Did you ever aspire to be a professional football player?

BC: I think just about any good athlete dreams of playing pro and believes they can do it. They’re confident and that’s part of what makes them good in the first place.

OC: What was the best part about being in London?

BC: Pints at happy hour? Also, the freedom to be young, studying abroad and meeting people from a different culture. Tackling Shakespeare was humbling, but it also inspired me to get better.

OC: In many of the shows you have been in (24: Legacy, Longmire) your character is extremely active. How do you stay in shape for those roles?

BC: My physicality is a big part of my essence. I’m an active guy in my personal life so playing these law-enforcement, alpha male characters isn’t a big stretch, but when you take away that physicality is when the work gets really interesting. It becomes still and you do less. As for my workouts, I mix it up: boxing, pilates, spinning and hot yoga.

OC: What was the most interesting city your work has ever taken you to?

BC: Santa Fe. I love and miss it. My daughter Waverly was born there.

OC: You are the father of three young children, any tips for traveling with kids?

BC: We don’t travel a lot with the kids. We’re that family that if you see us on a plane you’re inside voice says: “please don’t sit by me.” We all flew back East for the holidays and we found most people to be very helpful and accommodating with the kids. We also travel with our therapy dog, Blue. He’s the easiest of the bunch.

OC: Favorite destination for a family outing?

BC: The beach or a park. The babies don’t need much. They really love the water, but I’m looking forward to getting them in the snow next year.

OC: You recently released your first book Spiritual Gangsta: The Search for Truth, part self-help, part memoir. What was the motivation behind writing this and what do you hope readers take away from it?

BC: They say people don’t change, but fatherhood made me a different person. I’m much better than I was 5-10 years ago. I want to shake that guy and tell him to get out of his own way. That’s why I wrote the book, because I want to help people (especially guys like me), who put a lot of pressure on themselves to figure it all out and be perfect. Life isn’t a game of perfection, it’s about finding the truth (your truth) and making that human connection. Hopefully, by sharing my path it will help others discover their own.

OC: First thing you do when arriving at a hotel in your room?

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples.

Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” He said. They came to Him, clasped his feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see Me.”

Matthew 28:1-10

My wife and I have been to quite a few concerts over the last nearly 25 years together. They all typically have the same format. There is one stage and a series of performers will play and sing on it, each one a little more prominent than the one before until you get to the main event, the performer who has the top billing and the one everyone has usually come to see the most.

Well, as we look at the scene unfold at the tomb on the morning of Resurrection Sunday, we find a series of people take center stage with the best coming last. Look at the opening ten verses from Chapter 28 of the Gospel of Matthew:

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples.

As the curtain goes up at sunrise after the Sabbath, the dawning of the first day of the week, we find a group of women taking center stage. Matthew tells us that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (Mary, the mother of Joses and James) were counted in the number. Mark adds Salome and if you look at Luke, you’ll see him add a woman by the name of Joanna. All and all, we don’t know the exact number of women but here’s what we do know and this is an important reason why they were opened up the resurrection event on center stage:

First, the women had been with Jesus during His ministry in Galilee. The twelve disciples usually were the ones who got all the attention in the scriptures as we look at the travels and ministry work of Jesus but we can’t lose sight that there was a group of women in their company as well, women who tended to Jesus’ needs and were present during much of His teachings. In fact, as we will soon see, they were with Jesus when He prophesied about His crucifixion, death, and resurrection. More on that in a moment.

Second, the women were present at Jesus’ crucifixion, watching Him suffer and die at a distance. Jesus’ remaining eleven chosen disciples weren’t there with the exception of John, the disciple who the scriptures tell us Jesus loved, the disciple Jesus’ entrusted with the care of His mother Mary. It was fitting that the women would be the first to go to the tomb and experience the resurrection first hand before anyone else did.

Back to our passage for today where we find the women going to the tomb, concerned about how they would get the large stone rolled away as we learn from the Gospel of Mark.

It was time for the next event participants to take center stage.

The women were worried about the stone but as we see, God had a plan in mind to move it and it would have been the last thing the women would have expected. For as they got to the tomb, a “violent earthquake” struck and an “angel of the Lord” descended from heaven before “going to the tomb” and rolling back the stone where he sat. Luke’s account tell us this angel had a counterpart and both were dressed in clothing so brilliantly white that it would look like lightning or snow to the onlookers who included the women and the Roman guards, allotted by Pontius Pilate the day before to ensure no one came and took Jesus’ body, a concern carried by the Jewish chief priests and the Pharisees.

Well, as the angels took center stage, we found nothing but fear strike the eyewitnesses. The guards passed out (were like dead men) but the women were very much alert and aware of what was happening so one of the angels sought to put them at ease saying, “Do not be afraid”. He then added:

“I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.”

When you look at Luke’s account, we find that the angels ask them why they were looking for living among the dead, reminding them that Jesus had predicted His death by crucifixion and subsequent resurrection when they were with Him in Galilee. And with that, the women remembered (Luke 24:5-8) what Jesus had said and set off quickly to do what the angels had told them to do, to go and tell the disciples what they had seen. The scriptures tell us that they were still frightened from what they had seen but also feeling joy as they had learned their Master was alive.

It was time for the top person to assume their place on center stage.

For the women had no sooner started off to report to the disciples that Jesus Himself appeared before them! Indeed, He WAS alive! They could see so themselves.

Imagine how you would have felt if you were one of the women who had watched Jesus suffer and die while nailed to a cross just a few days earlier. His body was broken and lifeless then but now He was very much alive as He greeted them. His welcome as well as the mere sight of Him opened the floodgates of joy and reverence within the women who clasped His feet and brought Him their worship. If Jesus hadn’t known before how much He was beloved by these faithful ladies, He definitely knew now. For there was no doubt that He was the main person they wanted to see, the only One who would have brought such elation to them on center stage.

We get a sense Jesus didn’t want the homecoming to last too long because He had much for the women to do. We read where He dispatched them to do what the angels had asked, to do and tell the eleven disciples (referred to by Jesus as His “brothers”) to go onto Galilee where they would get to see Him themselves. And the women did just as Jesus commanded.

Today, over 2,000 years after the events of that Resurrection Day, we still come to worship our risen Savior and are left with the same overwhelming joy and devotion that the women at the tomb felt. The only difference is that we don’t go to the tomb looking for the dead when Jesus was very much alive. We know He lives and is intimately involved with every aspect of our lives as Christians as we wait for that day when He returns again to take center stage, coming from heaven to earth to claim all who placed their faith and hope in Him as Savior, and usher them into eternal life with Him and God the Father forever.

Here’s a feature I used to routinely write a few years back.

Sometimes there are a lot of smaller stories that don’t get told, simply because they’re not “blog-worthy.”

It’s not quite a matter of “quality versus quantity,” but rather there’s always so much to say, and so little time.

Here’s a few topics worth touching on…

Two Offer Dates

You’ve been reading stories on my blog throughout 2017, or back in 2016 for that matter, about “bully offers” and how they’re driving the market crazy.

Properties are being listed for sale with a set offer date, say, February 28th, and they’re selling on the 21st only hours after they come out, or on the 22nd after a buyer forces the seller’s hand, or even on the 27th – one day before the scheduled offer date, which makes absolutely no sense.

Some listing agents (myself included) are fed up with the chaos and are saying “No Pre-Emptive Offers” on the MLS listing.

I do this mainly because I think you always get a better price on offer night, but also because, as I explained last week, I want to expose the property to the entire market, not just the first person through the door. I’d rather have 15 offers on “offer night” than one offer the day the listing hits the market.

In any event, I think listings that specifically spell out “Yes” or “No” to bully offers are important.

If the market is going to be chaos, better to have an organized chaos, I believe.

And then this past week, just when I thought I had seen it all, somebody sent me this:

Unreal.

Absolutely, positively, ridiculous.

It makes no sense.

“If you’re going to break the rules, we’d like you to use our rule-breaking rules.”

Setting an offer date of the 25th, but saying “Seller Reserves The Right To Review Pre-Emptive Offers” is what we’ve come to expect.

But setting an offer date of the 25th, and then setting a second date for bully offers?

That’s crazy town!

What if somebody (gulp!) submits an offer on the 17th? Then what?

Do you bully, the bully-date, that’s a head of the offer date?

I don’t know where people think this stuff up…

Poker Room At 70 Temperance Street

Are you familiar with INDX?

It’s the name of the condominium at 70 Temperance Street.

I have no idea if INDX is an acronym for something, or if it’s playing off the TSX Index, since it’s located one block away.

Either way, the location of this building – right in the middle of all the bank buildings, means the demographic is like something out of Boiler Room or Wall Street.

The building has some of the most insane amenities I’ve ever seen:

– Lounge – Party Room – Boardroom – Yoga / Pilates Room – Fitness Centre – Golf Room – Movie Theatre – Barbecue Area – Poker Room – Billiards Room – Exterior Terrace – BBQ Area – Dry Cleaning – Grocery Delivery Service – Shoe Shine Station – Concierge Service – 24/7 Security

And while “shoe shine station” might jump out at you, what really got me was the poker room.

How does this work?

Is it like the gym, where the building simply leaves equipment out for people to use, or like the library, where there are desks at which people can work?

Because if the building is putting out green felt tables at which people can gamble then isn’t this, I don’t know, sort of illegal?

What kind of liability is on the condominium corporation here?

They’re not running a casino, but they’re encouraging one.

And how long until the poker room gets a blackjack table? Or a roulette wheel?

What are the rules?

Maybe what started as a few tables for people to sit down and play, eventually turns into one guy who plays “the house” and sets up for blackjack dealing.

Based on the demographic of this building, I’m thinking Saturday nights in the poker room at 70 Temperance are busy…

Increase In Toronto Land Transfer Tax

Some of you might disagree with this one, but personally I think Toronto’s decision to increase land transfer tax on properties above $2,000,000 is yet another punishment for the wealthy.

I read an interesting letter to the editor a couple of weeks ago, check this out:

Re: It’s Time To Limit Tax Expenditures That Favour Our Highest Earners (Feb. 7, Globe and Mail):

Implementing this reasoning would amount to further shafting high income earners and send them scurrying to another geography.

Not only do the 1 per cent account for 11 per cent of taxable income, but the author suggests let’s take a little more by taxing capital gains at 80 per cent instead of 50 per cent, closing in on full-pop taxation.

So basically, take away more than half of their marginal income – and also more than half of the investment income from what they are able to save from the less than half they are left with.

How about better accountability for what happens to our tax dollars? It is not a crime to be a high earner.

I can’t say I disagree, especially with the last part about accountability, and the notion of it being a “crime” in today’s society to be a high-income earner.

And raising the land transfer tax by 0.5% for the value of properties over $2,000,000 is punishing those earners yet again.

Many of you don’t care, and I don’t blame you. You’re trying to figure out how to make ends meet in today’s economy, and in a city that’s being taken over by generational and foreign wealth.

But just consider that a buyer of a $4,000,000 home pays a downright stupid $152,200 in land transfer tax.

That’s a completely arbitrary tax, and always has been.

It’s not about city services related to housing, like garbage pick-up, snow-clearing, hydro lines, etc. That’s what property tax is for.

Land transfer tax is the most ridiculous, and most arbitrary tax I’ve ever seen. It’s worse than the Liberal government’s sneaky eco-taxes.

Agents Losing Keys

Here’s one the public doesn’t care about, but is worth telling.

You all know the drill regarding keys and lockboxes, right?

Be it a house or a condo, there’s a door key in a lockbox, maybe with an access FOB, and the real estate agent opens the lockbox, retrieves the key, shows the house or condo to the buyer, and puts it back.

“Puts it back” is the most important part.

Keys go missing from time to time, it happens. On a long enough time horizon, an agent is bound to forget to put back a key. The agent gets chatting with his or her buyer clients outside, for twenty minutes, and then forgets the key is in his pocket, and drives off.

But what really, really bothers me about this, however, is that nobody ever admits to it.

Not one agent, in all my years, has said, “Oh geez, yeah I woke up this morning and there was a key in my pants pocket, sorry about that.”

It’s never happened.

Last week, a key went missing at one of my listings.

I called the last three agents that had shown the property – the previous night at 7:00pm, 7:00pm, and 8:00pm. Three appointments, three agents.

All three said they handed off the key to another agent.

One agent gave me a long, convoluted story about how he had no cell phone signal in the stairwell, and had to go back down to the main level to get a signal, to check his phone, to get the code, to open the box back up and put in the key.

Then he added that he could see somebody in the unit an hour later, as he was in the building across the street, and looks into my listing.

Me thinks thou dost protest too much?

In the end, as it always does, the key magically reappeared an hour later.

But not before my client had to leave school, Uber to the condo, get another key, and go to place it in the lockbox – where the original key had now been returned.

Those are the two constants with lost keys: 1) Nobody ever admits to it. 2) The key always seems to magically reappear.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

A seller of mine came home to her condo last week, after a day’s showings (which in this crazy market is seventeen appointments), and found the following:

1) The door handle to her balcony was broken right off, and left on the counter. 2) The kitchen drawer track was broken. 3) Somebody left a Starbucks coffee cup in her bedroom. 4) Somebody left a Booster Juice cup in her sink.

This is a busy listing – $599,000 in King West, in today’s 2017 market, means close to 80 showings in a week.

But that doesn’t mean that this ceases to become “a home” and simply becomes “an asset.”

The kitchen drawer was sticky – so somebody yanked on it really hard, and broke it. Maybe that’s an honest mistake. Same goes for the balcony door, I guess.

But what really gets me is leaving behind a coffee cup.

And the person who left the Booster Juice did so knowingly, since they decided to place it in the sink! Maybe the person with the Starbucks just forgot. No excuse, but it could have been a mistake. The person who left the Booster Juice took the time to place it in the sink.

I guess they thought the maid would pick it up?

A Realtor’s Dinner

I reached a new low-point last week.

Or maybe it’s a high-point.

It depends on who you asked.

I told this story to a colleague, and he said, “That’s awesome. You’re a beauty.”

I told this story to a snobby friend-of-a-friend, and she said, “You tell a story that most people would be mortally embarrassed by, like you’re somehow, like, so proud of it.”

And then she induced vomiting so she could fit into that night’s dress…

A busy real estate agent is often on the road all day, and well into the night.

When the market is in full-swing, I’m often getting home at 10-11pm every night, and it means I’m always on the lookout for a meal.

It’s easy to forget to eat when you work in this business. I always seem to remember to drink coffee, but sometimes I get to 5pm, my stomach hurts, and I think, “Oh wow, I forgot to eat today!”

Many nights I’m presenting an offer at 7pm, then heading off to showings, then back to deal with the offer; it’s back-and-forth, east-to-west, all over.

Last week, I was insanely hungry around 10pm, and I found a Sobey’s on Dupont Street just east of Ossington. I figured I’d get one of those ready-made sandwiches or wraps, but by the time I got there, they had already cleared them all out.

I looked around everywhere, but the “prepared foods” section was completely closed.

There was only one item of prepared food left anywhere.

And it was one of those “Family-Sized” BBQ chickens.

Not exactly the “grab-and-go” type of food, is it?

Not quite something you can eat in the front seat of your car?

Well, I was absolutely starving, and I didn’t want to eat three bananas and a Granny Smith apple, thank you very much.

So I went to the cash with a travel-size Purell, a box of Kleenex, and a BBQ chicken.

And then I went into the parking lot of Sobey’s, at 10:30pm, and ate that chicken….

…..on the hood of my car.

Bare hands, just ripping and chewing, like our ancestors in 10,000 B.C. would have, except I was in an upscale neighbourhood and it was 2017.

I mucked about two-thirds of that bird, and then cleaned up with my Purell, and erased any trace of my carnivore behaviour with a piece of Dentyne Ice.

And you know what?

That car-hood dirty-bird was the best meal I had all week.
