What are the drawbacks of using magic? Does it have mental, physical, and/or emotional consequences for the user?

Rocks are like batteries that can be depleted, or rather their ability to channel magic needs to recovery. Mages can tire but their magic stores (tons of gems/jewelry) will usually deplete first— unless it’s a huge spell.

What tools are needed to harness magic? Wands? Spells? Magical artifacts?

Gems, rocks, and to a smaller degree, precious metals. Mages are decked out in jewelry: rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, brooches, etc, even hair ornaments. Some mages might have wands, but they are more of a personal choice rather than a necessity.

How do people learn magic? Instinct? In school? From family members?

It’s based on meditation and proximity to gem deposits. This is a culture that considers emotional intelligence and regulation through the practice of meditation. It is typically during meditations that magical skill becomes evident, however parents with stronger magic can usually know when their children have it. Parents or aunts/uncles tend to teach, but community elders, other mages, meditation teachers, etc. can and will take on the task if someone doesn’t have that familial or community connections. Self-learning is also an option.

Can everyone use magic or are only certain people capable of using it?

Everyone has some innate magic, however, mages have the strongest capability to access it. A random woman may have an innate ability to cook especially well— magic can translate into simple skills. It is common for most people to wear some kind of gem jewelry (except patricians, who reject gems and whose culture deviates by means of ostentatious decorative heave pieces and fashions). Meditation is a powerful tool and is the avenue most take to better access the energy that gems channel. 

Is the capability to use magic hereditary? What about different ways of using magic (transformation powers, teleportation, etc.)?

It’s not hereditary, but it isn’t spontaneous either. It can be generational but also engineered. Parents who have strong magic are likely to have children who have strong magic. Visits to gem deposits for group meditations, living near deposits, or frequent meditations with a gem collection can create stronger bonds to their gem channels and to Magic. Powerful mages can sacrifice their senses to deepen their connections to the energy; the most common sacrifice is hearing and thus sign language is prevalent in this world.

What is impossible for magic to do?

Magic is a tool, it’s only as capable as the wielder. You can’t assess someone’s strength as a mage just by how much jewelry they’re decked out in. (To be elaborated upon.)

How long does it take to master different magical skills?

By the time someone is in their late teens, they should have a good grasp of their magic and have a personal arsenal of spells and charms. However, most of these are defensive, protective and trap spells. Offensive spells take longer to master, or takes more meditative practice.

Can creatures other than humans learn magic? Are different creatures better at using different kinds of magic?

Blood Charges are individuals with essentially an open channel to magic without the need for gems. Their powers are often elemental in nature and very unstable. They typically live away from towns or cities because of the volatility of their power. They can also perform a ritual that can open the channels to other mages Magic. Fae also have plant and or water-based Magic which mages do not.

Does it require spells to be spoken, written, or thought?

Finger tutting, hand/finger, body movements, and sometimes dance, and spoken words are all effective forms of magic. Sign Language is prevalent in this society to communicate with the Deaf, so many gravitated toward fingerspelling and tutting. Runes tattooed on the hands and arms with mineral ink can help mages conjure voicelessly, but that requires significant meditative practice. 

Is it possible for someone to lose their magical abilities?

Not permanently. Traps and certain lodgings can block gem channels temporarily though. Magic use can deplete the gems and make Magic painful and difficult to cast until a period of rest is taken; great trauma can burden the connections and make wielding nigh impossible,  but no one can truly lose their Magic completely.

How do characters’ emotions affect their ability to use magic? Do their emotions affect the magic’s intensity or controllability? 

Emotional regulation is a major cultural practise among all peoples. Children are taught self-regulation and meditation from early on. Blood Charges can learn the meditation but their direct connections to the energy are so profound that it causes them to experience emotion with exponential rawness. Blood Charges are considered empathic on top of their elemental abilities, they are beacons for power and emotion and seeking one out opens the channels of Magic for a mage to a degree that makes emotion very raw and difficult to handle. Mages who are deeply attuned with themselves, which is a learned skill, are usually the best at using their Magic, however, some people have trained their Magic with a certain emotion instead of the balance of emotions which can be dangerous and lead to a corruption.

How does the strength of a person’s magical abilities change as they age?

A magical ability needs to be honed throughout one's life. Even if someone is not actively casting, their meditation brings them closer to the energy and makes channelling magic through gems more natural. 

Can people normally perform any kind of magic or can they only perform things that fall under their specialty? Are their exceptions?

All Magic is accessible to those who take the time to learn it. The only distinction is that mages access the energy through gems, fae access the energy through plants and water (mermaids are considered fae).

What rules restrict magic use in society?

Patricians have rejected magic and live as far from gem deposits as possible, high in the mountains. They associate with metals which without gems are not particularly useful for channelling magic. They shun Magic, and the use of it, to them, means acknowledging The Child. Patricians call their children cubs as a further rejection of The Child’s threat (Patricians are like climate change deniers). Outside of patrician society, Magic is not regulated so much as social rules are so strong that few dare to break the codes. The people of the ground honour Magic and each person’s connecting to the energy. Murder, curses, maiming, coercion, etc, are all illegal, but duels are legal. 

How do people’s magical abilities impact their career prospects?

Mages are important people. But given the threat of The Child, the mastery of the mage is what is most highly valued. Mages draw most of their power when they are on land, being at sea means being a great distance from the core, and thus only particularly powerful mages ever venture out with pirates. Pirates can often have magic themselves, and the better the cohesion and ability of a crew the more likely they are to be successful. But honestly, magic is so much a part of this world that it’s woven into everyday life; it’s used in cooking, and gardening, and infrastructure and medicine, and even play. 

What kinds of magic are the most feared or seen as the most powerful? Which are seen as mere jokes?

Some people think it’s selfish not to train one’s magic, especially if someone seems to have a strong affinity for it. Blood Charges are feared, and it is considered dangerous and reckless and desperate to seek one out, and a social taboo to solicit The Ritual from one. Emotion-driven magic is also seen as bad, but some of the most powerful mages have connected more deeply with the energy by meditating through their grief, anger, happiness, sorrow, etc.

How do people use magic to help with everyday tasks?

Cooking, building, farming, medicine, clothes making, etc.

Can magical energy be stored for later use?

You can channel and charge any gemstone. Mages wear tons of jewelry in order to have stores of Magic ready.

What objects or other factors can amplify someone’s magical powers?

Any object made with gems and metals and sometimes wood. Metals are not helpful on their own, but when gems are bound with metals certain mages can channel more easily.

When do magical abilities initially manifest? From birth? At a certain age? Under certain conditions?

By the time a child is 4 or 5, their connection to the energy is known. Some children have more affinity for it than others, it is a practiced skill and meditation is the most valuable way to manage it.

What is the first spell a character is likely to learn?

It depends on their upbringing, but usually mending spells for clothes, or cooking spells, seeking spells (like finding food or water), and preservation (health and cooking). Protection and defensive spells usually follow. Offensive ones are usually later. But physical spells, like pushing, lifting, scattering, throwing, turning, etc, are among the first. Babies can rock their own mobiles and have reflexive magic, in this way parents are able to communicate their children’s needs.   

What happens if a spell is performed incorrectly? Nothing at all? A weaker version of the intended results? Pain?

You can practice an axe manifestation spell a million times but you may fell a tree with one strike the third time or make a little dent the fiftieth, it is almost always based on connection to the energy. One of the best galleries we visited in Lisbon (in my opinion) was Modo De Uso. You are handed a playful ‘handbook’ guide to each artwork where Claire de Santa Coloma has written a suggestion guide to how to approach and respond to the artwork with her drawings used as reference “If you made it this far, thank you. The artist is now responsible for your level of satisfaction”. Rather than being a passive onlooker the artist encourages you to connect to the artwork discovering it’s sensory appeal. As humans we like to look at art because it simultaneously affects our senses, our thoughts, and our emotions and ___’s encouragement to embrace the sensory-tactile element of his artwork certainly heightened the overall experience for me and my friends. I’m also intrigued by the ability of this installation to be able to transmit the same message to diverse groups of people through the tangibility of the work. 

To better understand my personal position my research has begun by asking general straightforward questions like  :

Further still, the ability to make and use tools, a skill that began in apes and exploded in hominids, requires a great deal of visual and tactile memory.

Where does this leave contemporary or abstract art? Ability to use visual representations to induce memory recall or visual understanding.

I also fully expect that artistic talent would have eventually been transferred from our culture to our genes. think of a project and an idea for the theory and context as opposed to a 3D outcome, my initial urges are to create, make and explore materials and see what comes of this, instead I began by asking myself some questions about the artworks that interest me, specifically the type of artwork. Firstly I wanted to create a series of videos using this little plastic toy children’s pottery wheel to throw functional pots in unusual places, like the underground or on the top of a mountain. I liked the idea of a playful performance piece then began thinking about participatory artwork and how members of the public could take part in this piece.  I also liked the idea of filming in the wilderness, responding to ‘site and place’ by throwing vessels using clay collected from a specific place, filming this vessel being created in this specific place, drawing attention to this direct connectivity between the land and the artwork and the maker.  (in a dream land I also imagined it being wood fired at this location and eating food from this  vessel that was gathered/found/ foraged. To go full cycle.

→ headcanon: jae-ha’s ptsd.

i remember mentioning a million years ago how i was gonna try to write out something about how jae-ha’s mind works and basically the influence that his childhood abuse ( which was physical and mental // emotional ) had on him. so here is an attempt to expand on it a little more. idk i probably will edit this more as time goes on but i wanted to post this here really for my own reference.

jae-ha has complex ptsd ( with psychosis ) given that it was chronic abuse ( happened over a period of 12 years ). he didn’t have many of the protective factors either — he was socially and physically isolated, and his abuser was really his only point of contact ( though i often mention garou as his sole abuser, the villagers were also complicit in this abuse, and really the purveyor of it ). his mental d/o is undiagnosed, even in his modern verse ( since he had no interest in going to therapy & refused to ). i’ll split this up into childhood and adulthood manifestations because while he hasn’t “gotten over it” he has shifted in the symptoms he primarily experiences. his coping mechanisms into adulthood make the existence of these issues more subtle, but sometimes he does experience the other ( childhood ) symptoms, just less frequently than when he was younger & usually brought on by a trigger. just fyi, jae-ha will probably never really speak about this in its entirety, especially the hallucinations.

CHILDHOOD // TEENAGE YEARS

paranoia // distrust // hypervigilance — constantly on edge around others, didn’t really want to stay in one place // he was constantly on the run thinking that the villagers would be after him, even long after he left // he was often distrustful of the intentions of others after garou died and he lived on the streets // he had to deal with people who wished to use him & his powers for his own benefit even outside of his childhood home and that further cemented his distrust in those around him

anxiety surrounding being touched — usually manifesting as initial flinch // recoil // disgust reflex due to an expectation of pain. might have reacted violently to it as well, depending on how someone touched him ( if it was a harsh touch, he’d respond likewise ) // he’s likely to be more hesitant around men than women

flashbacks — an almost constant thing // mostly it was garou’s voice echoing in his mind but at night this turned to nightmares of him being chained again or used for his powers

insomnia — to avoid the nightmares that plagued his sleep, he’d often just stay up to try to avoid it, resulting in many sleepless nights // he’d often have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep

hallucinations — auditory, visual, & tactile // seeing ghosts // feeling the weight of chains on his wrists and ankles though they were no longer there // hearing garou’s voice echoing in his mind or the sounds of chains at night or at other unspecified times

panic // anxiety attacks — these could come out of nowhere or actually have a trigger ( usually being touched, having arrows aimed at him, threatened to be shot down ) // when confronted with dangerous situations, he’d hyperventilate, start to think he was going to die, etc.

angry and violent outbursts — could come from being touched or from feeling powerless // if he wasn’t progressing as he thought he should, it irritated him // when he couldn’t block garou’s voice from his mind, he would lash out // sometimes his anxiety & panic attacks could turn into outbursts of violence

withdrawal // isolation — avoided getting close to people // as a child, he would keep people at a distance through more aggressive mannerisms // in modern, this was a big reason why he refused to go into the adoption system — if his own blood didn’t want him, who would ? garou always told him that no one would want him.

internalization of negative assumptions — he was always told he couldn’t fit in // he was a monster // no one would accept him and this added to his tendency to withdraw from others out of the fear that he would be rejected or other expectations of pain // he also experienced immense guilt for leaving garou behind and for stealing his life away // often times he did believe that he deserved the abuse that he got

risky behaviors — included stealing // drugs // general recklessness

dysphoria — just general feeling or state of unhappiness, often pervasive

ADULTHOOD

fetis..hization of pain instead of anxiety surrounding it — so he basically reconditioned himself to think differently about being touched to lessen his discomfort surrounding it // masochism can be used as a coping mechanism, in a way it’s taking control; jae-ha had no control over the pain that he experienced as a child, but re-framing it in a consensual context helps him come to terms with abuse

memory repression — avoids thinking about anything to do with his past abuse at all but certain things can make him remember and cause him to withdraw ( usually he makes jokes about the subject, tries to brush it off, and then withdraws completely if the subject is pushed // may get angry tbh )

claustrophobia and cleithrophobia – basically caused by his fear of being tied down without escape or enclosed in small spaces, and this can trigger panic attacks // flashbacks // this can also trigger his anxiety, and if he’s trapped long enough, starts to have these fears of death or nightmares about dying // feelings of powerlessness or hopelessness can overwhelm him // he had this when he was younger too and it carried over

withdrawal // isolation — in short, he has highly developed social skills that preclude vulnerability // instead of being reserved or aggressive as he was when he was a child, he comes off as friendly and open, but he does have many mental walls up // he shies away from emotional intimacy, but is fine with physical intimacy // in a way he can… kind of sabotage his own relationships because he has these internalized negative views, which is one of the reasons he shies away from commitment and tells himself he’s fine with being alone ( but he craves acceptance and intimacy ) // he over regulates his emotions a lot of the time, not allowing himself to feel certain things because he doesn’t want to return to the anger and recklessness of his youth

internalization of negative assumptions about himself — such as being a monster, ugly, undeserving, never going to fit in, etc. — but instead of believing them outwardly, he over compensates by putting an emphasis on beauty, his appearance, independence, and freedom, convincing himself he’s better off alone instead of people don’t want me // his over confidence masks his insecurities

self-medication — not saying he’s an alcoholic, but will turn to it in order to escape the discomfort of the present // in modern verses, he uses drugs like weed and smoking cigarettes for that, along with alcohol still // he has used harder drugs before but that was in his youth

tendency towards protection — he’s very protective of others who he may or may not consider weaker and it’s because he doesn’t want people to experience what he has, basically

insomnia — not as bad as when he was younger, but he can still find it difficult to fall or stay asleep; his sleep habits really aren’t the best even as an adult // he does still have nightmares, though less frequent than in his childhood

dysphoria — certain reminders of the tragic event can trigger a general drop in his mood that may last a while

hypervigilance — manifesting more as keen perception than paranoia, since he has a better handle on it // he is very aware of people’s nonverbal cues, facial expressions, tone, etc. and he is very aware of his surroundings

chronic pain — dull aches and pains usually around his wrist and ankles // he’ll get bad migraines // can manifest in other areas of his body, but the aforementioned areas are the most common // honestly he barely notices the pain anymore

devlog # 9 // life updates + new systems (UI, character stats, turn-based system)

so, I’ve been away for what feels like a year - there are a million things I could share.  first, let me update you on life things, then tell you a bit about what I’ve worked on in-game. as far as life things, I have been t i r e d.  and with autumn (my favorite season) here, the desire to cuddle and sleep all day is strong.

part of what’s been keeping me so tired is also that I both started uni studies and have a new job.  in the last blog, I mentioned I was thinking of going to university for further studies in computer science and all.  well, thanks to a few people’s generosity (and many, many phone calls, emails, etc), I did get signed up in time!  I have been absolutely in love with the things I’ve been learning in my first computer science class ever; even though it teaches Java, I have found that everything I’m learning is very easy to translate into C# and what I’m building in Unity.  each day, I feel more confident in my coding, so much so that nearly everything I’ve done in the past month has been entirely from my mind, just free-coding, without any tutorial or other guidance.  it is really amazing to feel like I can code up a system in my mind, even when I am away from a computer, and then sit down and type it out and it run exactly as I intended. while my studies and my new job (not especially difficult, but asks but for many hours each week; consider supporting me on Patreon so I don’t need to work as much?) keep me busy and often fatigued, I have been reclaiming time to code things I love and am really excited about - and I’d like to share with you a couple of things I’ve recently built. (edit: I just realised that a lot of the images are blurry :( will think on a fix for this)

where we left off with the last devlog, I was working a lot on the systems to build up the physical world: tile generation, interactables, biomes, and the like.  I did actually work on some other parts of the world and visuals (will share that in a near future devlog!), but more and more lately, I’ve been feeling like what will really keep me excited and focused, to feel like I’ve reached a solid checkpoint in my development, is being able to actually *play* the game.  even if it’s repetitive, only one area, or without animations, being able to press play and move characters around and interact is something I know will excite me.  so, that’s what I’ve been working towards. there are a handful of pieces I can identify between where the game was last devlog and what it needs to be minimally playable: - a basic UI that shows character stats - a system to calculate and update the stats to be displayed - a system to keep track of turns automatically - for the UI or world to display player choices accurately - at least a couple interactive actions the player can take, besides moving (damaging health, defending, etc) I started with making a basic character stat UI and a behind-the-scenes calculator. note: since we’re working mainly on systems in this devlog, I’m going to be sharing a lot of code talk.  but maybe you’re into that sort of thing.  also remember that my focus in each of these pieces is not to make something gorgeous or especially well-organised; my focus is to make something that works (though I am always thinking about optimisation and other possible patterns along the way).

so, this is what the first UI for character stats looks like!  I modeled this as a basic idea of how you might make a UI for creating a character and being able to preview their stats - both the base ones (like might and agility) and also a few of the compound ones (health, stamina, mana).

in this version, a player can choose an inheritance (what other games call “race”), a birth sign, and a primary class (though you won’t be able to choose it from the start like this in the game).  each of these choices contributes modifiers which change the stats, which is calculated altogether when you press the left or right buttons.  (again, these are not all the inheritances, signs, or classes in the game)

here’s a bit of the magick code that makes this happen:

as you can (hopefully?) see, I’m calling methods (CalculateClassValueMIT, etc) to get the relevant stat values and multiplying those against a magic number (eep!) and the character’s inheritance scaling.  what you might you also notice here is that these calculations are hard-coded to a given attribute (might, dexterity, intellect, etc); along with MIT, each of the other five attributes has its own calculation method.  I really hate this because I know there has to be another way to do it, but this is the way I know how to do so far - feel free to message me other patterns! (for example, I’ve seen people make a Stat class, but I don’t really get that yet?) then, while I was feeling a bit playful with UI and stats, I thought I would spend a day making a prototype of a “charisma interaction” system.  by this, I mean that - in the game - characters will be able to use their interpersonal skills to be able to navigate certain quests, get more information, and the like.  charisma pairs with each of the other attributes to give a certain way of interacting; for example, charisma and might could be interpreted as aggression, intimidation, using one’s size or boldness to gain favor.  pairing charisma with will could render an interaction more focused on relating, understanding, and empathising.  you can see some of might interaction here.

what’s shown in this is that Joseph, the unit kind enough to help with our testing, responds to your might interaction attempt with various phrases.  behind the scenes, Joseph has their own inheritance, signs, and other traits, and when you click, these + a random roll are used to calculate *how* Joseph responds.  in this case, Joseph has a primary sign of Aries, which inclines them to respond well to your might-based attempts (you’re in luck!).  even when Joseph declines your attempts or chooses to stop talking about a subject (just wait some days for them to open up again), they will tell you that they mostly like how you’ve approached them, even if it didn’t work this time - a character with Virgo as a primary sign, however, might tell you off on your first attempt and refuse to interact further with you. rather than just a few pre-programmed dialogues, I am interested in the game having a more procedural, somewhat organic feel.  also, in the actual game, Joseph will have slightly less patience; you won’t be able to keep clicking, only able to make an attempt twice in a day before the character closes that interaction. while the gif above shows many of the responses and reveal that there are just a handful of phrases this character will use, a player won’t see these in succession like this, so hopefully, the organic, personal feeling will be maintained.  and again, in the future, I intend to make this more complex, not just button pressing. here’s some of the behind the scenes to how the aries sign is built.  each sign is a scriptable object with these same parameters.

and the last thing to share today is about the turn-based system.  I knew this was an important step in moving us closer to a playable version of the game.

first, I approached this system by defining exactly what makes up a turn.  during a turn, the player will have four basic opportunities for choices: a first movement, an action, a secondary action (if the first was a half-action), and a second movement (if the character has any remaining movement).  these are the phases that the character sees and directly interacts with. then, beyond/around that, each turn also needs to initialise a player and update any status effects (status phase), figure out who’s next and adjust each character’s place in the list (priority phase), and see if the battle conditions have been met or if a next turn is needed (check phase).

here’s a closer look at some of the phases in code:

the basic setup is that the player interacts by pressing buttons when their input is needed, then the code moves through the phases depending on numerous factors: if the player used up all their movement, if they have action remaining, if they have a status (sleep? paralysed?) that will skip their turn, which phase it is currently ..

I have seen other approaches to coding a state machine (which I guess is what this is?) that I didn’t understand very much at all, and I am excited about this code because I know it came from me and all the things I’ve learned over my short time coding.  importantly, i am excited because it works.

so, what’s next?

well, I’ve built these systems solo (separate from the rest of the game systems) so that I could really polish them (as much as one polishes prototypes :p) before moving them into the fray. so, a next step is to integrate both the stat UI and the turn-based system into the rest.  to make it so that a player can pull up a fuller UI with a key press.  to show a constant UI indicating which units are involved in an interaction, maybe with some predictive stats (chance of hit).  and to have the player’s “movement button press” actually be them choosing which tile to move to, calculating automatically if that is their full movement range, and a much prettier (radial?) Pregnancy In The Stone Age – Can We Learn Something?

The woman who became pregnant during the Stone Age faced huge risks compared with today’s mother-to-be. There was no way to control bleeding or infection; Caesarean section was not an option. That we survived as a species seems remarkable – until you dig a little deeper.

The outcome of pregnancy depends on the underlying health of the mother, nutrition before and during pregnancy and the threat of infection. In all those areas the woman of 50,000 years ago was better off than her counterpart today. How is that possible in an age when there was no plumbing, no medical care and no protection from infectious diseases?

Better diet, better pregnancy

The primitive woman’s diet was less likely to be deficient in important nutrients than that of today’s young girls. (Ref 1) A study from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center has confirmed earlier reports that adolescent and adult pregnant women take in too little iron, zinc, folate and vitamin E.

A woman who begins pregnancy without sufficient calcium, vitamin D and other bone-building nutrients increases her risk of developing osteoporosis in middle age. But that’s not the end of the story. Her infant may also be at greater risk of fracture in the future. Osteoporosis of middle age is at least partly programmed before birth, especially if the mother smokes and has little physical activity. (Ref 2, 3, 4)

Most laypersons believe that Stone Agers were hearty meat-eaters. Anthropologists know that isn’t so. They lived on a predominantly meat diet for only about 100,000 years, from the time that Homo sapiens developed keen hunting skills until the advent of farming. Before that time meat came from carrion and small game. The bulk of their calories came from vegetables, fruit, roots and nuts.

Plant foods contain everything that a pregnant woman needs, including vitamins, antioxidants, protein and minerals. Modern vegetarians often become deficient in vitamin B12 but small game, birds’ eggs and the deliberate or accidental inclusion of insects in the Stone Age diet provided more than enough of that critical nutrient.

Folic acid deficiency in early pregnancy leads to defective formation of the infant’s brain and spinal cord. Those abnormalities are much less likely among the babies of mothers who receive an adequate amount of folate, at least 400 micrograms per day. So few women eat enough green leafy vegetables to boost their folate levels, the U.S. government requires that manufacturers of baked goods add it to their products.

Obstetricians have been prescribing multivitamins for their pregnant patients for decades but it is only in recent years that studies confirmed the wisdom of that practice. In 2002 the American Medical Association reversed a position of long standing and recommended that everyone, with no exceptions, needs a multivitamin/multimineral preparation every day in order to avoid subtle but health-damaging inadequacies of these nutrients. Taking a multivitamin reduces the risk of congenital defects of the newborn, especially those that involve the heart. Preeclampsia is a serious, sometimes fatal complication of pregnancy. Women whose intake of vitamins C and E is low have a threefold greater risk of that condition. (Ref. 5, 6)

Would these mostly vegetarian early Stone Agers have become iron-deficient? Not likely. Their diet was rich in iron as well as in Vitamin C that facilitates iron absorption. Under those conditions iron deficiency would have been rare. Cereal grains interfere with iron absorption, which explains why iron-deficiency is common in societies that subsist primarily on grains. However, one of the main reasons why Stone Age women were unlikely to be iron deficient is that they didn’t have nearly as many menstrual cycles as modern women do.

In a primitive society the onset of menses is about 5 years later than that of American young women. Modern hunter-gatherers, like the oldest Stone Agers, are either pregnant or nursing during most of their childbearing years and they only menstruate a few times between weaning one child and conceiving another. In those groups breastfeeding does suppress ovulation because it is literally on demand, i.e., every few minutes, even throughout the night. For a modern breastfeeding mother, on demand often means no more frequently than every couple of hours and perhaps once or twice a night after the third or fourth month. Thus menses return in spite of nursing and monthly blood loss continues.

The fish-brain connection

Beginning about 150,000 years ago our ancestors discovered seafood. The increased intake of fatty acids in fish and shellfish initiated the great advance in brain size and complexity that allowed humans to progress more quickly in the next 100,000 years than they had in the preceding million. Enormous gains in toolmaking and the development of language and group communication followed.

The human brain is composed mostly of water but the solid portion is mostly fat. The body can’t manufacture the omega-3 and omega-6 fats that make up so much of the structure of the brain and eye so we need them in our diet. Maternal deficiency of these nutrients, especially omega-3s, prevents the newborn brain and eyes from reaching their full potential. The best source of omega-3 fats is fish; nuts and leafy green vegetables are also good sources.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are found in every cell of the body. They allow efficient flow of nutrients, regulate nerve impulses and keep inflammation in the right balance. In a proper diet there is an equal amount of omega-3 and omega-6 fats. That allows the immune system to fight infection, a real threat that humans faced from the Stone Age until the age of antibiotics, a mere 70 years ago.

The advantage to the baby of a diet that is rich in omega-3 fats is obvious but mothers need it, too. Nature protects the unborn infant by tapping into the mother’s stores of omega-3 fats. A woman whose intake of omega-3 fatty acids is low during the months and years preceding pregnancy will develop a deficiency of her own. This becomes worse with succeeding pregnancies if her intake of omega-3s remains low. Postpartum depression affects about 10 percent of women following delivery and it is associated with a deficiency of omega-3 fats. (Ref 7, 8)

The newest epidemic

There is one complication of pregnancy that never occurred in the Stone Age: type 2 diabetes. No disease in modern times has risen so fast. It has increased several-fold since the 1950s; between 1990 and 2001 it rose by 61 percent. Gestational diabetics (Ref. 9) are those who do not yet have the full-blown disease but they cannot process blood sugar (glucose) properly during pregnancy. About half of them will develop frank diabetes in the years following delivery of their infant.

Most of us know type 2 diabetes, which was once referred to as adult-onset diabetes, as the disease that our grandparents developed in their later years. It’s no longer uncommon to find it in adolescents, even in grade-schoolers. As it has dipped into the younger generation it has alarmed – but not surprised – physicians to find that it is no longer a rarity in obstetric practice.

How can we be so certain that the pregnant Stone Ager didn’t have diabetes? This is a lifestyle disease that has three major associations: a low level of physical activity, a diet that is high in refined grains and sugars, and obesity. Those conditions simply didn’t occur during the Stone Age. Their lifestyle demanded strenuous effort. Grains of any sort were not part of their diet because they require tools and controlled heat. Sugar as we know it simply didn’t exist and honey was an occasional lucky find. Obesity would have been non-existent, as it is today among the planet’s dwindling populations of hunter-gatherers.

Diabetic mothers have more complications of pregnancy than normal women do. Their babies are 5 times as likely to die and are 3 times as likely to be born with abnormalities of various organs.

They kept germs at bay

Common wisdom states that Stone Age people were an infection-ridden lot but that simply isn’t true. They had powerful immune systems because of high levels of physical activity and a remarkably varied diet. Between the protective antibodies that a mother passed across the placenta and those that she conferred on her newborn via breastmilk, Stone Age babies had more protection against the germs of the day than modern infants do.

Sexually transmitted diseases don’t spread very far or very fast when people live in small isolated bands as they did during the Stone Age. The likelihood that today’s pregnant female will have at least one of these infections is more than 50 percent (Ref. 10). The impact on babies can be severe; some die, some will be brain-damaged.

Choice and consequences

Tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs have produced a generation of infants with problems that Stone Age babies never faced. Mothers who smoke have infants that are smaller than the norm and whose brain development may be compromised. Alcohol or cocaine use by the mother during pregnancy results in stunted growth, congenital defects and other severe problems.

Given a choice, none of us would want to live in a Stone Age world but we have neutralized the almost miraculous medical advances of the last century. We have allowed our daughters to be less physically active and to subsist on a marginal diet. If we could reverse those two factors alone there would be a dramatic decline in prematurity and other complications of pregnancy. The lessons that we can learn from the Stone Age are not subtle, obscure or beyond our capacity to imitate them. We can produce the healthiest generation ever by making better choices for our children and for ourselves.

PRICING OF ARTWORKS: AUCTION VERSUS EXHIBITION

Abstract

When an artist is trying to sell his work through an exhibition or an auction, the selling price may end up being different from his intended price. In 2013, one of the four versions of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, a pastel on board painting, according to Vogel (2012), fetched $119.9 million at Sotheby’s auction in New York. In 2014, Ben Enwonwu's Princes of Mali, sold for $138,870 at Bonhams in Lagos, and El Anatsui’s Mask, sold for $78,375 at Arthouse (Castellote & Fagbule, 2015). El Anatsui’s works sell for millions of naira, yet works of another artist struggles to sell for thousands of naira. Auction and Exhibition play major roles in the pricing of works. Why does one work sell for ₦70,000, another for ₦500 million, and yet another for ₦17 billion? In establishing selling price for a work, is exhibition more beneficial to the artist than auction? Does the price of a work go higher in auction than exhibition? These inquiries would build and buttress the concentration of this paper. This paper uses a review of reports on marketing structures and operations of art auction and exhibition to discuss their impact on pricing of artworks. It also examines the certain benefits accruing to artists on either channel of distribution and sale of their artworks.

Introduction

This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of auction over exhibition, in relation to pricing of artworks. According to Wikipedia (2017), “An art auction or fine art auction is the sale of artworks, in most cases in an auction house”. In England this dates back to the latter part of the 17th century. At that moment the names of the auctioneers were mostly repressed. Prior to the date of an art auction, an auction catalogue, that lists the art works to be sold, is written and made available. An art auction is one of the most glamorous way of collecting art for many people. Some of the most famous auction houses are Christie's and Sotheby's, based in London and New York. The oldest auction house, according to Wikipedia (2017) is Stockholm Auction House (Stockholms Auktionsverk), which was established in Sweden in 1674. In Nigeria, the most prominent auction houses include Arthouse Contemporary, Bonhams, Sogol and TK.MG, all based in Lagos. Art auction is a new development in the sale of artworks in Nigeria. Castellote & Fagbule (2015) observes that Nigerian art auction is still at the ‘embryonic stage’. The history of art auction in Nigeria is barely two decades old. Onwuzulike (2015) opines that “The young history of art auction in Nigeria reveals its steady growth and appreciable impact in the visual art sector, locally and internationally.” He discovers that the first art auction in Nigeria, entitled Before the Hammer Falls, held in 1999 was organised by The Nimbus Art Gallery Lagos, run by Chike Nwagbogu. Onwuzulike (2015) narrates that “The auction was historically timed and the result was revolutionary in the history of art and art market in Nigeria. With the record sale of Bruce Onobrakpeya's Palm Wine Women for ₦2 million, the auction brought art to the front pages of the newspapers”. The first auction yielded a total of ₦22 million in sale of artworks.

Another prominent way that artists can market their artworks is through an Art Exhibition, show or fair. Wikipedia (2007) states that “An art exhibition is traditionally the space in which art objects (in the most general sense) meet an audience”. The exhibit of artworks lasts for some temporary period unless, if it is a permanent exhibition, as in the case of Art Museums. Art exhibition may present pictures, drawings, video, sound, installation, performance, interactive art, new media art or sculptures by individual artists, groups of artists or collections of a specific form of art. The works of art might be exhibited in historical centres, museums, art halls, art clubs or private art galleries, or at some place, the chief business of which is not the show or offer of artwork, for example, a cafe. An art exhibition can likewise be organized out on a particular event, including a birthday, commemoration, remembrance, festival, celebration or jubilee. Any of these occasions offers the artists great chance to deal their artworks.

Whether a work of art is going to be exhibited or auctioned, the artists and dealers make so much efforts in establishing a price for a particular work. The efficiency of these basic marketing structures is a key determinant of the cost of creating and distributing works of art. There are artists who are creating works for academic purposes, yet some are producing works as hobby or for emotional, religious or spiritual purposes. But the artist who must earn a living for their creative endeavours, must be vast in their marketing strategies. They should acquaint themselves with exhibiting skills as well as regularly exhibiting their works.

This writing dwells on the benefits accruing to professional artists in selling their artworks through exhibition at galleries, trade fair and show booths, or auction at auction houses. Some of the major art galleries and museums across the world include Christy’s and Sotheby’s auction houses of London, Tate Gallery Britain, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) of New York and the Louvre of Paris. In Africa, there are the Johannesburg Gallery, University of Johannesburg Commercial Gallery, the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. ArtHouse and Signature Galleries in Lagos, the National Galleries of Art in Nigeria, among others. The auction system and major exhibitions are central in the determination of the incentives for artistic work.

Price of Artworks

The price of an artwork is the monetary or economic value of the work. For a coherent discourse about the advantages and disadvantages of auction over exhibition, it is very necessary to find out the factors that determine the price of artworks. Sometimes the artist, in collaboration with a gallery, decides on the price of his artwork. Kathleen (2014) observes that “There's no easy method of determining a value for a painting except perhaps going by market value, and still that's not an easy way to calculate”. Various possible reasons that can affect the price of artworks are enumerated as follows:

1.         Authentication

The price of an artwork can be affected by authenticity. If the potential buyer is worried about the authenticity, he may place a low asking-price or decide not to buy the work. The process of authentication varies, depending on an art period. Contemporary art is the easiest to authenticate, especially if the artist is alive and working, and if the production of the work is documented. If this is not the case, documentation must be verified, as well as the artistic traits of the work itself. The most challenging cases of authentication involve a laboratory. This entails analysis, investigative research and material dating. The experts face the challenge of meeting a deadline to decide the authenticity of an artwork. Laboratory authentication can take several weeks to be completed. According to Art Expert (n.d.), “Our normal turnaround time for a full authentication report is two to four weeks”. Nowadays, many contemporary artists issue certificates of authenticity for their works, so obtaining it at the beginning is crucial, since forgeries are common.

2.         Artist’s Name

Price of artworks of artists with big names may be exorbitant. A Jeff Koons’ work cannot sell for a small amount of money after the auctioning of the legendary Orange Balloon Dog for $58.4 Million at Christy’s in New York (Waxman, 2013). But the work of emerging artist cannot be valued exceptionally high. However, there are new rising artists in art market, who tend to contradict this notion. Oscar Murillo and David Ostrowski are good examples. Prices of their works have risen relatively quickly in the past few years, from widely affordable to exclusive (Kostov, 2017), but completely unexpected surprises don’t come around often in the market.

3.         Fashionability of the Artist

Changes in fashion can affect price of artworks. Artists go in and out of fashion, but there are broader shifts in taste that affect the market. Forty years ago the highest prices were achieved by Old Masters. Today a lot of glamour and demand is focused on Modern and Contemporary art. Even ten years ago the highest auction price for Francis Bacon stood at $8.5m, but in November another Bacon’s work sold for $143 million (Vogel, 2014).

4.         Importance of the Artist in History of Art

Artworks of ancient artists are highly priced. Some artists are legendary. Hook (2014) observes that “It is hard to imagine art history ever downgrading the importance of Rembrandt or Rubens, Leonardo or Raphael, Picasso or Matisse. They will always be valuable”. However, over the past few years, artists such as the Surrealists and the German Expressionists have become more expensive as their art historical importance has been re-affirmed. Art lovers are now appreciating the beauty of the works of art. Likewise, if an artist has just featured in a major exhibition, like the Tate, then that kind of high-profile exposure can also raise the price of his works.

5.         Positive Romantic Baggage

The price of an artwork can be influenced by a back-story to an artist’s life. Such a story affects the appreciation of him and the works he produced. It is a romance made up of the glamour and myth of his artistic creation. Other positives in an artist’s life story include unhappy love-affairs, rebellious behaviour and even spells in jail. Reminiscing such remarkable difficult moments can also add value to the works of the artist.

6.         A Desirable Phase in the Artist’s Development

The price of an artwork can be affected by periods of an artist’s career, which was more desirable. Hook (2014) finds that “Late Van Gogh is more expensive than his early work. A Renoir from the 1870s will be worth more than a late one. Any Picasso is desirable, but one from the early 1930s particularly so”.

7.         Signature Artwork

The price of an artwork may be affected by unique characteristics of works of a particular artist that market prices highly recognize. For instance, after purchasing a Monet, one would obviously want his visitors to see the painting as Monet’s work. “Thus a painting showing water lilies or Rouen Cathedral will be more expensive than a less typical portrait or still life by the artist.” (Hook, 2014).

8.         Condition of a work

The price of an artwork can be determined by the condition of the work. Having a Damien Hirst’s work does not mean that the work can be priced like another Damien Hirst’s work. The condition is important whether it is a painting or a drawing, an original, or an edition. Irrespective of the medium, condition is the first thing that is assessed. The assessment takes cognisance of the effects of retouch, restoration or any damage or change of the physical integrity. Works of art suffer and age over time, some more than others. Like human beings, some are subjected to cosmetic surgery, through restoration. Where this has been too extensive, the price of the painting will be affected.

9.         Wall-power

The price of an artwork can be influenced by wall-power. Wall-power include such factors as composition, colour, and emotional power. Thus, blue and red, tend to be good news for most people. Hook (2014) posits that "Surpassing artistic quality (difficult to define, but you know it when you see it) is always reflected positively in the price a work of art realizes, sometimes by an astonishing margin.” A good example of an artist’s work may fetch 400,000; but with such effects as Wall-power, it could make 1,000.000.

10.       Subject of the Artwork

The price of an artwork can be determined by the subject. Some subjects are more desirable than others: portraits of pretty women will always sell better than those of gloomy old men. Sunny landscapes are more attractive than dark ones, and calm seas are preferable to rough ones. Animals and birds are generally preferably being depicted alive, because most people regard death in a painting as a bad news. The theme depicted can affect market. Nudes, sell well if the models are beautiful. On the other hand, nudes are not favourably received by most Islamic buyers.

11.       Provenance

The price of an artwork can be affected by provenance. The history of the painting itself can make a difference to its value. Provenance refers to whose collection it has been in, where it has been exhibited and which dealers have handled it. (Hook, 2014). A Cezanne from the great Paul Mellon collection is worth more than the same painting with an unspecified provenance. Similarly, an El Anatsui’s work owned by a celebrity will worth more than another Anatsui’s work, which its provenance is unknown.

Advantages of Auction over Exhibition

The auction system and exhibition are essential in determining the incentives for works of art. Their effectiveness is a major determinant of the cost of creating and distributing artworks. However, Ashenfelter and Graddy (2003) finds that “The value of most important works of art is established by public auction, either directly, by an actual sale, or indirectly, by reference to other sales. How the auction system works is thus a critical determinant of how the public’s preferences are translated into the evaluation of artistic work”. The following are among the conditions that can affect the pricing of artworks in auction, which could be of significant benefit to the artists.

1.         Seller request estimate

Price of an artwork can be established through seller request estimate. Agarwal, et al (2014) finds that “Estimates are given for all lots and can be based on prices recently paid at auction for comparable property”. Thus the auction house can estimate a price for a particular artwork going for auction based on the price reached on related works sold.

2.         Subjective private value

Price of artworks in auction depends more on the subjective private value to the bidders than an objective common value. Sooke (2011) notes that the competition among bidders to acquire a particular artwork leads to increase in the price of the work.

     3.         Uniqueness, scarcity and genre differences

Price of artworks can be influenced by the uniqueness of each work, the scarcity of the work along with genre differences among the artists. Onuzulike (2015) finds that works of art that are unique and rare are valued higher at auction than those that are easily available.

4.         Past value of an artist's work

Price level can be affected at the beginning of the auction by past value of an artist’s work. Ebay (2016) finds that “Artists who have been featured or discussed in various catalogues or books are likely to be well established. Pieces that are high priced usually come from a respected and well-established artist”. Castellote and Fagbule (2016) discovers that price level of works of some notable artists in Nigeria (El Anatsui, Ben Enwonwu, Yusuf Grillo, Kolade Oshinowo and Bruce Onobrakpeya) remain higher in Nigerian auction than similar works of other artists practicing in Nigerian.

5.         Established artists

Price of artworks can be influenced by the reputation of the artist. Agarwal, et al (2014) find that “Established artist show a positive relationship with price at the beginning of an auction.” They observe that the rate of price change, when buyers are bidding for a work of an established artist, rises towards the end of the auctions. EBay (2016) stresses that “The price of artwork largely correlates to the reputation of the artist”.

 Advantages of Exhibition over Auction

Exhibition is essential to an artist due to the following advantages: promotion, meeting other artists and industrial colleagues, inspiration and selling of works.

1.         Promotion

It is necessary for artists to promote their works at exhibition as it provides opportunity for them to meet people and share with them what they do. Exhibition enables the artist and his work to become more popular and attract more clients. For upcoming artists, who are trying to establish themselves, exhibition is better and more cost effective way than auction. If an artist or his work is not known, he will not succeed (Fleskes, 2014). There is no better way to make an impact with another person than a face to face encounter. Shows will help make him better known. Promotion at events builds a growing awareness of him.

2.         Meeting other artists and industrial colleagues in person

Having a booth at a show makes an artist accessible. It is a location where fans and industry people can find him and solicit commissions and artworks. He can pick up jobs at shows. An artist can receive calls a few months later from someone that met him at the show, who is following up a request. If the artist did not make money at a show, he might make it down the line. (Fleskes, 2014). This goes to show the advantages an artist enjoys from exhibiting.

3.         Inspiration

Walking around a show and seeing what others are doing is an inspiration that can last for a long time in the memory of the artist. Most shows are networks of booth after booth of artists who paint, draw, sculpt, hand-craft and use technology to create several imageries. Variety of styles, materials and techniques broaden the artist’s creative mind. (Fleskes, 2014). The analysis of artworks displayed by other artists at show could help the artist resolve many technical issues concerning his work.

4.         Selling of works

A show enables an artist to attract buyers who are looking to purchase artworks directly from him instead of buying from a dealer. It helps the artist to sell his artworks at the price he wants. A show aids an artist to know the kind of artworks that are in vogue. It acquaints him with the business of art with fresh ideas and sells strategies that are necessary in marketing his artworks.

Conclusion

In comparing auction and exhibition regarding price of artworks, the reputation or popularity of the artist plays a vital role. For emerging artists that are not well established, exhibition is a better way of getting better prices for their artworks than auction. For well established artists, auction is a better way of getting better prices for their artworks than exhibition. With public auction most valuable artworks are sold at the highest possible price. Sometimes the eventual price is more than the expected selling price. In a documentary of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on art, Alastair Sooke found that price of artworks is very subjective. A renowned art dealer, Arne Glimcher in Sooke (2011) observes that: "The whole thing of art and money is ridiculous. The value of a painting at auction is not necessarily the value of a painting. It is the value of two people bidding against each other, because they really want the painting". They want the artwork desperately, not because of its beauty, but to enhance their social status. On the other hand, auction is a big disadvantage for emerging artists, as the rich people who come to bid are oftentimes seeking for works that were produced by legendary artists, most of whom are dead. Auction can destroy the business of the emerging artist, if his work did not get a bid. Auction houses prefer to avoid such artists than to reduce price. This sort of transaction can destroy the price of the artist’s work or even his career. Most emerging artists want to be successful in their art business. To attract bids and good price for their artworks, emerging artists need to do several exhibitions, some of which has to be mounted at high profile galleries or art fairs. Works of a Nigerian artist, Chris Ofili went from affordable to exclusive, immediately after his exhibition at the Tate Gallery London. Now his works can sell for high price in most auction houses.
