What To Do With The Kids When It Rains in Barbados
There is no denying that with an island as green as Barbados, it does, unfortunately, rain from time to time. Generally overnight or in the morning (and never for very long) but sometimes it might be in the middle of the day, putting paid to any ideas of spending the day at the beach.
Though to be honest, if you sit at the beach under an umbrella it can still be a fun way to spend the day. Especially if you are on Mullins Beach near Holetown because you can relax under an umbrella, lie on a sun lounger and make the most of the Wi-Fi at Mullins beach bar reaching the beach. They even do lounger side service, simply put your flag in the sand and a waiter will deliver your snacks and drinks to you, meaning you really don’t have to get wet. The bonus being of course, if you are staying at Royal Westmoreland you get the lounger, towel and umbrella for free on production of your membership card (issued by guest services when you arrive).
If lying on the beach isn’t your thing how about the cinema at Limegove? They have regular screenings throughout the day, with current films on offer, to suit all ages. They also serve snacks and drinks right to your seat meaning you don’t need to miss a second of the film. While at Limegrove you could also do a bit of duty free designer shopping.
If shopping is your thing then there are lots of other places to do that too! Cave Shepherd is a great place for fragrances and souvenirs, and of course Bridgetown, the capital, has a whole wealth of shops to explore.
Another great place to take children when it rains is Earthworks. You can watch the icon coloured plates, bowls and mugs being made and even order something personalised to be shipped to you at home. Obviously you would need to keep an eye on small ones as all breakages do need to be paid for, but great fun for older children to look at all the colourful china. There is also a cafe upstairs that does great toast panini and milkshakes, with a great view out to the coast. With vertical plastic covers to keep you dry on the balcony when the run comes in sideways!
A pricier option for something to do in the rain might be a trip on the Atlantis submarine. They do dives during the daytime, or in the evenings. Not for the claustrophobic though as this is a submarine and space to move around is non-existent. Though once inside and sitting on the benches the view is spectacular. Well worth a trip.
Also on the “must visit” trip for a rain day is Harrison’s Cave. This underground cave is filled with stalagmites and stalactites, viewed from a motorised train that travels around the cave system with a guide who explains who the caves were discovered, and how they came to be formed. Definitely a trip not to be missed.
And of course, you could always still go in the see or to the pool, the water will still be warm enough, and after all you are going to get wet anyway so the rain shouldn’t put you off!

I think about dying but I don't want to die. Not even close. In fact my problem is the complete opposite. I want to live, I want to escape. I feel trapped and bored and claustrophobic. There’s so much to see and so much to do but I somehow still find myself doing nothing at all. I’m still here in this metaphorical bubble of existence and I can’t quite figure out what the hell I’m doing or how to get out of it

Our Top 6 Weekend Trips from Cozumel
Cozumel has countless diversity of effervescent drinks, great beach views, and sun-kissed tourists. But what makes this island town even more appealing is the province in which it stands. Rich culture, special food, Mayan origins, and magnificent tropical landscapes form the area around Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula, an unparalleled spot for any tourist. Here are the top 6 weekend trips from Cozumel. Hop over to these locations for another view of the lush eastern region of Mexico.
Xcaret
This eco-archaeological park along the Riviera Maya is loaded with attractions, natural sites, and cultural experiences that submerge travelers in the jungle backdrops. Nature enthusiasts can rejoice in bird aviaries and confrontations with America’s largest cat, the jaguar. With water slides, interactive animal displays, and maritime adventures, this park offers something special for any traveler. Spend a few days in this park and absorb the thrilling ambiance that contrasts the relaxed atmosphere on Cozumel’s beaches.
Tulum
Leaving behind its notoriety as a sleepy town, Tulum is turning into a regarded destination in the region. Look up and down the coastline of Tulum and there’s not a mega-resort insight. Boutique hotels and shops line the narrow streets of Tulum, giving the entire town a charming and intimate feel. Restaurants serve patrons delicious fare ranging from perfect al dente pasta to popular street tacos. Though the city may go to sleep early, the beachfront Mayan ruins and gorgeous jungle skyline keep a lively outpouring of visitors around for Instagram photo-ops.
Swim in the stunning Lagoon Kaan Luum
This stunning lagoon just south of Tulum is the ideal place for a swim. The gorgeous destination possesses clear, tranquil waters and is generally isolated. Show up in the early morning if you need to make sure you are the only person in wonderland. The lagoon consists of at least two unique shades of blue because its center incorporates a cenote, or sinkhole, reaching a depth of around 260 feet (79 meters). You can find food vendors in the immediate area, and eat next to the lagoon.
Merida
Merida is a colonial capital in the center of Yucatan. Often missed by Cozumel’s diving crowd, Merida is the ideal stop for any adventurer who wants to know more than Top 40 DJs along the Caribbean Sea’s bustling beach bars. Pedestrians squeeze down tight avenues adorned with buildings pasted in colored tattered paint. Colonial structures stand preserved as if showing an accurate snapshot of another era. In Northern Merida, planned neighborhoods and golf courses are patronized by the citizens of this capital city.
Cenote Dos Ojos
Cenotes are natural sinkholes. Mexico is home to three of the greatest underwater systems. This establishes the Yucatan Peninsula region a sanctuary for adventurists who want to play in the local cenotes. Cenote Dos Ojos offers a tiny jungle hike before arriving into the clear underground waters. Snorkeling on the colorful coral reefs in Cozumel is something extraordinary, but this provides a unique experience. Divers looking for exciting thrills come here to confront the cool waters and gaze at the great stalactite and stalagmite formations.
Chichen Itza
Yucatan and Quintana Roo are teeming with ancient Mayan archaeological sites, museums, and ruins. One of the most exemplary of all the ruins is Chichen Itza. Meaning “At the mouth of the well of the Itza people,” the myths and history that envelop these protected ruins are embraced by visitors and Mayans who even reside on this land. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was previously the greatest city in the Mayan civilization. As one of the new seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza has inserted itself as an exemplary part of any trip to this valuable territory.
We love to advise on our beautiful island and the surrounding area (as the many guests of Stingray Villa can attest to).

An Afternoon Out from Restábal, Lecrín Valley, Granada
We love visiting gardens and this one was a pleasant surprise to us. You will probably have heard of the gardens at the famous Alhambra Palace in Granada, the Generalife Gardens, but did you know that there is a Generalife Chico (a small Generalife)?
Visit the Generalife Chico, Garden of the Senses
Water is an essential element in Nasrid gardens, always present and soothing
Just 20 minutes south of Restábal is the village of Velez de Benaudalla and its attractive Nasrid Garden, also known as the Garden of the Senses. In Al- Andalus, the gardens were spaces for the solace of the senses, for cultivating herbs and medicinal plants as well as producing food products. What’s more, they provided both men and women with five major benefits: spiritual, aesthetic, psychological, scientific and botanical-nutritional. Conceived as a reflection of Paradise, Nasrid gardens combined architecture and plant life to perfection. Fruit trees grow next to huge cypress trees, aromatic plants next to peppers and aubergines, whilst water is omnipresent throughout the garden. Water runs through channels, into fountains and ponds, always with a discreet sound that adds to the peace of the surroundings.
The old water mill in the garden at Velez de Benaudalla
A characteristic element in this historical place is the Vertical Garden. A sheer drop of strange, sharp shapes caused by the long, slow lime scale sedimentation. A path leads down the cliff side to cavities and caves with stalactites and stalagmites, one of the caves even boasts a small pool in its interior.
Don't miss the Vertical Garden
“Do not believe that tomorrow you will be in Hell. One does not enter into Hell having been in paradise!"
Ibn Jafaya C. XI-XII
Fountains are simple, the sound of water a peaceful murmur
How to Get There
When you reach Talará Lecrín, instead of turning towards Granada, turn left to Beznar and join the A44 motorway towards Motríl at exit 167 then exit 175 to Velez de Benaudalla. If you have time, I’m sure you’d enjoy an alternative route on the old Granada Motril road from Restábal, through Pinos del Valle and down to Los Guajares and on to Velez de Benaudalla.
The garden at Velez de Benaudalla is open Wednesdays to Saturdays. Contact for guided tours. Information in the house.
Entrance is 3€ per person. Guided visits, minimum 9 people 2.€ per person. Entance free for children under 4 years. 50% discount for pensioners over 65 and for the disabled.

An Afternoon Out on Cozumel
THE EAST OR "WILD SIDE OF THE ISLAND": Anyone who goes to Cozumel without seeing the east side can't really say they've been to the island. It is postcard gorgeous anywhere you look. For us, it's the chips, pico, and a margarita at Mezcalito's (best on the island). Coconuts is a fun place and has an unbeatable view, friendly dogs, and powerful drinks (watch out). Chen Rio is a fantastic place to swim in a tide pool. Playa Bonita is the spot to beachcomb and has snacks & drinks. Punta Sur is a whole day for us. We get there when they open at 9:00 and check out the crocodile lookout. Next, you need to climb the lighthouse (133 steps) and then go to the beach (snacks & beverages at Papito's beach club). Also, there is a lagoon boat tour at 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00 that is included in the park admission. We always tip the boat guy anyway. We've seen some big (600#+) crocodiles on that tour up close and personal.
