Been feeling a bit blah lately but a hashtag saved me. Sometimes what’s right in front of me can seem mundane and uninteresting. And that’s what’s been messing with my sketching practice. Recently though, I happened upon the hashtag #whatsinfrontofme on Instagram and it lifted me out of the funk. Below are a few of my recent #whatsinfrontofme sketches.

HAPPY CUP BAR & RESTAURANT. Large red type, not exactly thick lettering, not exactly thin. I suppose it's “just right” like the middle bear's bed. The sign sits above the restaurant but below the ugly brown bay window on the second floor. 1274 BLOOR ST. WEST. L.L.B.O. That part's in blue, and the letters are smaller than the HAPPY CUP part above. Also in blue and sandwiched between the address and the declaration of a liquor license: a simple pictogram of a telephone followed by the phone number: 416-531-5240. But as though the one sign weren't enough, another sign sits below it, above the windows of the bar/restaurant which sits quietly behind a rusted accordion grate. It's dark inside and so looks dreary, like a cave that is frightening until nightfall when it comes alive, the cavemen making a fire in the middle, roasting meats and painting the hunt of the day with their fingers on the walls. The second sign says (on a slant) Spicy your life. I think this might be my new life's motto. A motto for a new life. Spicy your life! The words even sound peppery! Let's make life hot, folks! To the right of my new (one and only) commandment is (again in blue): AUTHENTIC CHIN E & IND CUISINE.

bialetti espresso maker

Shiny and dull at the same time. Used and loved and used some more. The stovetop espresso maker is a classic design. It's almost frighteningly simple. From the outside, its body is a cylinder, which gives way to its lower half, a part that can be screwed off and filled with water, that is flared. Down there, toward the bottom, the stainless steel turns to nickle, to burnt marshmallow. The handle is made of black plastic. There is a plastic hinge on top which is perfectly configured to fit an average thumb. Grasping the handle and pushing with your thumb easily opens the top up. The lid flips and slams back down with a wonderful clatter. The small imprint in the front of the body is of the Bialetti man. Goofy, one finger up in the air, as though testing the wind. With his cartoon body, big moustache and twin-peaked hat, he works each morning without complaint.

Knitting needles sprouting like a bunch of reeds from the transparent green vase where they live. Some are short, some are tall. Some made of wood, others metal. Some are missing the vital piece at the top that keeps the yarn from slipping off. The vase is flared at the based and the top, coming in gently in the middle. Its vertical ridges follow these curves. The needles are jumbled and in no particular order. Some might even be missing their partner. There is one shiny, red set that's short and peeks out behind all the tall bamboo, like a shy child hiding behind their mother's legs when guests arrive. There is one tall grey set that is ugly and boring and rarely gets used. There is one jumbo set made of bamboo. This one is used to make 'chunky' things. It's shiny bulbous ends are poking up, just peeking out over the lip of the vase. They look so smooth and different from the others.
