ohh if you can i would appreciate some tips!! honestly writers are so admirable we dont give yall enough credit🙏🙏🙏
well, for me to give you the absolute best tips i can to help out, i need to know what exactly you're struggling with when it comes to writing. there are about a million different tips i can give you for about a million different things and some of those tips will be completely useless to you
for now though, i'll give you the things that help me getting into a writing mood + general tips i give to new writers and if you still need further help you can explain what exactly you're struggling with and ill do my best to help out;
1) whatever you learned about formatting essays; forget it.
a common thing i see in new writers is they try to write it like an essay. which isn't a bad idea really, but it is restricting. your paragraphs don't have to be four or more sentences. they can only be one if you want. it's your story, format it however you want. you don't need to follow rules
2) listening to music
this is mostly for when you have that one specific scene in your head but have no idea what to do for the rest of the fic. listening to music and connecting the lyrics to the characters you're using is a great way to get your mind thinking. one song can give you several different ideas depending on how you interpret it
3) make sure you are in a good mood
personally, i cannot write to save my life if im upset or just generally having a bad day. i know some people can use creating as a way to cheer themselves up, but it just doesn't work out for me lol
4) if you don't need background noise, don't use it
it's pretty easy to get distracted when writing, especially when you have something new playing. if you do need background noise of some kind, i would advise playing instrumental music or that one movie/show that you've seen a thousand times and could quote in your sleep. keep your focus on your writing
5) brackets will be your best fucking friend when writing
one of the most important things about writing is keeping your flow going. if you find yourself writing sentence after sentence for a good while and then you suddenly hit a stop because you don't know how to word what happens next; throw it in brackets and write the scene after it. its the same reason why you're told to skip questions you get stuck on when taking a test. let your brain do what it knows it can and come back to the tricky stuff later.
6) you don't have to write anything in order
you don't have to write a story exactly start to finish. you can jump between any scene you'd like and find out how to connect it to a different scene another time. this kinda ties into the last tip in the sense that you gotta let your brain do what it knows. if you only know the beginning and the end then write those first and figure out the rest as you go. if you need to edit either one of the previous things then that's okay. there's no shame in changing things around, it's just how creating things go. sometimes change is needed
7) writing prompts
for new writers, i like to tell them to find a prompt online to write a story for before they start their own. using a prompt someone else made keeps your brain from getting overwhelmed, allowing you to focus more on finding a writing style that works best for you. using writing prompts also lets your brain find ways to contribute to a story without having it make everything while also figuring out how to put it on paper. it's easy to overwhelm the brain, so let it get used to writing before you start creating your own ideas. (this is also something i advise to people who experience burnout or just cant think of anything to write. your brain just needs a break from creating ideas right now, go and find a prompt for it)
8) word count
listen to me because this is so important; ignore the word count. you need to focus on learning, not how much you're writing. it doesn't matter if you only wrote 50 words when other people have fics well over 50k. ignore it. you are learning, you'll get there eventually. if you focus too much on how much you're writing you're going to stress yourself out and ultimately drive yourself away from ever writing again. treat word counts as milestones. start with 50, then 100, then 150, then 200, etc. let yourself work towards it slowly rather than push yourself too hard right out the gate. you can't expect to draw the mona lisa the first time you put a pencil to a paper, so don't expect to write thousands of words the first time you write a story. it'll take time, and that's perfectly okay.
9) analyze the shit out of your characters
this is easier when writing fanfiction, but take a few hours to learn your characters. find the content they're in and hyper-focus on what they're doing. pay attention to their speech patterns, their body language, their relationships with others, etc. if they're not in a scene, try to imagine they are and what'd they do and/or say if they were. it'll help out with keeping them in character when writing
10) if you get to a point where you can't write anymore even when using brackets; stop writing for the day
we have our limits. you will get to a point where you can't get another word down and that's okay. it doesn't matter if you've only written a handful of words, close your program and wait until you feel motivation hit you again. if you keep trying to force yourself to write when you just can't then you're going to burn yourself out. the most probable reason for this is writer's block, which means you need to focus on other things for a while. give your brain time to recollect itself. it's annoying, i know, but it's better for you if you just let your brain do what it needs to. it knows how to take care of itself, so let it.
i also have a tag i use whenever i give tips, so you can check those out as well to see if anything helps! it's just writing tips

007 Fest 2023 - Headcanons!
Run out the guns, it's headcanon time! Prepare for barrage! (and my first post, so forgive me if I make a few mistakes, and it's a bit late due to my personal schedule)
Bond Headcanons
James Bond is not a codename. Quite frankly, I've never subscribed to this theory. I've always believed that we jump to a slightly different universe with every actor switch. Each universe shares vaguely the same series of events, with certain commonalities. Such as…
Every film Bond has lost their Tracy, except (maybe) Connery and Craig. Moore still visits his Tracy's grave, Dalton's was mentioned to have been married in LTK. Brosnan we never know flat out, but remember - "Or if you find forgiveness in the arms of those willing women, for all the dead ones you failed to protect…" Connery represents and interesting scenario. Diamonds are Forever can be read in two ways - either Bond is out Spectre-hunting after You Only Live Twice to catch the remains of what remains of Spectre, or he's on the warpath after Tracy died in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. For the sake of this theory, let's say that the latter scenario is canon.
Brosnan's Bond used to have unlimited spending money, but then Dench!M cut the funding, hence her nickname of evil queen of numbers This is something that has some basis in the Fleming books. Bond in Casino Royale is allowed to spend exorbitant amounts of money on the Secret Service's tab - millions of francs that is. Despite the fact that in the 50s 1 pound meant 13 francs, this still constitutes a hefty amount. I remember reading that novel!Bond basically has an unlimited budget in a guidebook. I have a feeling this is similar in the movies - after all, I doubt even a RN commander's pension could afford the hundreds of thousands in monies Bond is bound to lose in the movies. Of course, in Brosnan!Bond's timeline, I have a feeling Dench!M ended up putting an end to that little scenario.
There was no Cuban Missile Crisis in the Fleming books. Rather, Operation Thunderball was the "big nuclear scare that defined the Cold War". In the movies, it's largely kept under wraps, but in the book, it eventually goes public by the end of the story. Of course, the loss of two atomic bombs in the Caribbean may have convinced certain figures in the Soviet Union that keeping their nukes in such an area would be… disastrous to say the least. So with that in mind, they decided not to bite the bullet and kept Cuba nuke-free.
SMERSH was kept around specifically to counter the OO Section in the books. SMERSH in real life was disassembled in 1946, whereupon the MGB took on its counter-intelligence duties before reformatting into the KGB in 1954. We know in later books, specifically The Man With the Golden Gun and Octopussy and the Living Daylights, that the KGB does exist in the Fleming books. However, considering how more proactive the British Secret Service is, especially with the OO section, I would hazard a guess that SMERSH was kept around specifically to combat them, at least until the KGB came into existence (which then absorbed it).
Brosnan's Lleweylln!Q did retire… He took his fishing boat to Wales and lived out the rest of his days somewhere in the countryside where they only speak Welsh (a little something @emiliasilverova and I cooked up a few years ago)
Kincade is (or at least was) married to May Maxwell For those of you who don't know, May Maxwell is Book!Bond's Scottish housekeeper. In between assignments, she and Kincade stay up in Skyfall, before Bond summons her to look after his flat until he returns. Sadly, perhaps the reason we don't see her in Craig!Bond's run is that she may have passed away at some point.
Blofeld was always a megalomaniac, but kept that under wraps... until Bond drove him over the edge
One major line of thinking I remember when I watched Tim Burton's Batman movies is that Batman is always just one step behind his villains in the crazy department, with his morals relatively intact. Conversely, we see Blofeld acting like an absolute machine in Thunderball (and all his appearances in the movies before YOLT), but when Bond foiled his plots, he slowly began to lose it. This gave way into him being more expressive, megalomanaical, and downright unconventional (biological warfare, suicide gardens, and diamond lasers) as time goes on. After all, how would YOU process your hundred-million-dollar master plans going up in smoke at the hands of a suave secret agent who always gets away with it?
Bond's favorite book is Treasure Island
John Gardner mentioned that Robert Louis Stevenson was Bond's favorite author. And with the latter writing a sea story that stars a young orphan named James, who gets involved in some epic swashbuckling adventures, it just feels right.

Student loans are dischargeable
Tumblr media
Not only are Americans drowning in student loans they have no hope of repaying, but it's commonly understood that student debt can't be discharged in bankruptcy. 1 in 4 bankruptcies involves student debt, and that debt is almost never discharged. A generation's worth of tacit conspiracies between higher-learning institutions, lenders, and educational advisors has saddled millions of Americans with crushing, punitive debt, subjected to outrageous interest rates and penalties. These people took out loans when they were children in hopes of attaining a middle-class life through education. They got the education, but are mired in spiralling poverty thanks to the debt they took on to get it. Meanwhile, that debt has been spun into a form of toxic Wall Street asset, the "student loan asset-backed security" (SLAB), which securitizes the payment streams from immiserated people whose student debts will chase them into the grave. What if it's all a con, though? What if the law that prevents student debt from being discharged in bankruptcy had been systematically misinterpreted? What if all that debt could just be erased through bankruptcies that are not nearly so awful as the debts they'd clear? That'd be wild, huh? Earlier this month, Above the Law ran a long, fascinating feature by Ian Frisch, telling the story of Austin Smith, a lawyer who happened upon a long-buried legal secret while working on a law review article assignment for law-school in 2014.
https://abovethelaw.com/2020/10/how-the-bankruptcy-code-protects-lenders-and-harms-student-debtors-and-what-one-lawyer-is-doing-about-it/?rf=1
Smith discovered that most student debt COULD be discharged in bankruptcy, that the "educational benefit" clause of the 1990 bankruptcy act CLEARLY didn't mean what the courts and the legal profession had taken it to mean. It was right there, in the Congressional Record. Government student loans couldn't be readily discharged, but the $150b in private student loans, a form of subprime debt dominated by an obscure institution called The National Collegiate Student Loan Trust (no employees, office, or website!) could be. After law school, Smith got a job at an NYC white-shoe firm and convinced the partners to let him test his theory: he sued Citibank on behalf of a student debtor...and won. It was his first time in court, he didn't even know where to stand, but the case was crystal clear. His bosses thought the win was cute, but they were in the business of representing banks, not suing them. Smith quit and started his own firm, and racked up 50 individual victories in four years, totalling millions. Starting in 2016, Smith forged alliances with other lawyers to begin mass-scale class action cases against banks holding student debt. These cases cover 500k borrowers and $3b in debt, and  have three demands: I. All outstanding debt is wiped away, you never call these people and ask for this money again II. Give back all the money you have collected since the date of these people’s initial bankruptcies III. Pay punitive damages for your illegal conduct He's particularly interested in the NCSLT, that shadowy LLC with no employees or offices, that oversees $12b in debt that it neither originated, issued or serviced. NCSLT is a front for Massachusetts's First Marblehead, a bank so tiny it lacks a federal charter. Without a charter, First Marblehead can't originate out-of-state loans, so it created a rent-a-charter arrangement with PNC Bank, Jpmorganchase and Wells Fargo, who originate 11% loans to the poorest, most desperate children hoping for university educations. First Marblehead buys the loans and pays finders' fees to the big banks. It also works directly with universities, who act as loan originators to desperate kids, knowing that First Marblehead will immediately buy those loans and pay the university a commission. First Marblehead acquired a nonprofit, The Education Resources Institute, and laundered loans through that division, making the "nonprofit loans" that, it believed, would be immune to discharge in bankruptcy. The company went public in 2003 and shares jumped 250% in a year. First Marblehead uses NCSLT to turn these subprime loans into SLABS, and the SLABS are unloaded onto investors by Goldman Sachs, Deutschebank, Citibank, and UBS. One set of giant banks originates the loans, another set buys them, and in between sits First Marblehead and NCSLT, whose sole purpose is to wrap them in a legal fiction that makes them eternal millstones around borrowers necks, immune to bankruptcy. This is why Smith's work is so important: when he shows that the law has been incorrectly interpreted - as he has in so many cases before now - the whole rotten system collapses and hundreds of thousands of Americans will get justice. And while NCSLT is the worst offender, it's not the only one. Smith's also locked in legal battles with Navient (formerly Sally Mae) and many other lenders. Godspeed, Austin Smith, you slayer of debt!

Continuing from my last post about science fictional “hyperspaces” (wow, I think that might be the most viral original post I ever wrote; it’s amazing what being reblogged by @argumate can do for a post!):
As a science fiction writer, these are the features I find attractive about “hyperspace” that incline me to favor it over other explanations for “fast” interstellar communication and travel:
-------------
Hyperspace lets space still feel big. Wormholes/portals and instantaneous “jump drives” tend to make space feel small (though wormholes lend themselves nicely to space outside the wormhole network feeling big and to a feeling of sharp discontinuity between “known” or “civilized” space within the network and “unknown” or “wild” space where the network doesn’t reach). Start-anywhere go-anywhere jump drives without serious limitations have the additional issue that they’re more-or-less equivalent to teleporters, so they create the ultimate MAD setting where defending multiple fixed locations from a peer adversary is very difficult, and they minimize the strategic advantages of sustainable stationary banditry over unsustainable hyper-exploitive mobile banditry, and since the likely implications of that are very depressing I prefer to avoid it (except maybe if I was deliberately setting out to write a dystopia or explore the idea).
I want space to feel big in my writing, to give the reader some feeling of the vastness, grandeur, and inhuman scale of the universe. For my main science fiction setting, I think I’ll give hyperspace travel an effective “speed” of something like 5-10 c in Sol’s local neighborhood. That way interstellar journeys are more manageable than they’d be with journeys through our space, but journeys to other inhabited solar systems usually take at least a year or two (Sol to Alpha Centauri may be less than a year in hyperspace, but add in travel time to and from the Sol and Alpha Centauri hyper-limits, which is probably going to be at least a couple of months for each leg, and it’s probably about a year).
---------------
Hyperspace feels more like the sort of thing that might plausibly be useable to almost hairless apes with near-future-ish technology. With warp drives and wormholes and jump drives and so on I get the niggling feeling that’s the sort of thing you should probably have to be on approximately the level of an Orion’s Arm Archialect to do. Real theoretical warp drive and wormhole proposals tend to involve stuff like exotic forms of matter and energy and very large amounts of energy. Hyperspace would be a natural phenomenon, so it’s easier to explain it in terms of people exploiting natural phenomena we just don’t know about now, no weirder than being able to travel faster than rowing would allow by building a sail to catch the wind.
You can say that there are some rare atoms that naturally have a structure that extends into hyperspace. With human senses and 2020s technology they just look like ordinary atoms of silicon, iron, etc., but with the right kind of machinery you can detect them, sift them out of the surrounding 3D atoms, and concentrate them. Once you’ve got enough of them, you can make them the core of a pair of transmitters that you can use to send and receive radio messages through hyperspace. With more energy, you can “push” on these structures and “push” those atoms into hyperspace, and then if those atoms are part of a larger solid object the rest of the object and anything touching it gets dragged along with them (with a certain size limit, perhaps related to mass being “pushed” and energy used, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally sending the whole Earth into hyperspace the first time you try this - that’d be one heck of an oops; maybe a later disproven small theoretical possibility of that happening would go down into the history books along with “before they exploded Trinity they were worried it might ignite the atmosphere”); thus you can send a whole ship into hyperspace instead of just information. When you want to leave hyperspace you can reverse the operation and “push” the ship back into our space.
That gives you a nice highly valuable “handwavium” that can be a hook for various plot and worldbuilding points, e.g. there’s not much obvious economic reason to colonize Mars IRL except maybe tourism (anything you could mine there you get more easily from near-Earth asteroids, and it’s too inhospitable to make much sense as a settler colony), but maybe there’s a huge mother lode of these hyperspace-touching atoms somewhere on Mars. These hyperspace-touching atoms would be especially valuable if the process of using them for communication or in hyperdrives “strained” these structures and at some predictable rate caused some of them to “snap,” causing the atoms to become ordinary 3D atoms of silicon or iron or uranium or whatever. Then there’d be a continuous need for (relatively) large amounts of new ones even in a steady-state economy; you couldn’t just keep recycling them and recycling them and just do a little mining to make up for recycling inefficiencies. This would also be an interesting limit on use of hyperspace; using hyperspace radio or doing a hyperjump involves destroying a small amount of a precious resource, so people wouldn’t want to do it frivolously. This might augment that sphere analogy limitation on hyperspace communication I talked about in my other post; even if a hyperspace radio message from Saturn to Earth got there a little ahead of a radio message through our space, you’d probably send a radio message through our space for anything that isn’t time-critical, because the message arriving ten minutes sooner usually just isn’t worth the predictable cost in “snapped” hyperspace-touching atoms.
--------------
Hyperspace would be an environment, so you can do interesting things with it.
Since hyperspace offers a short-cut because it’s more compact than our space, I like to pull on the idea that it’s like our space but in a more compact state, so it’s similar to what our space looked like when the universe was younger and smaller. Going to hyperspace might be a little like time travelling back to a few tens or hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang, before the first stars formed. The environment of hyperspace might be a little like the inside of a giant molecular cloud, but “warmer” and extremely impoverished in heavy elements. The gas density might be a few thousand to a few billion atoms per cubic centimeter (by comparison, sea level air is about 10^19 molecules per cubic centimeter while the interstellar medium averages around 1 atom per cubic centimeter). The gasses and plasmas in hyperspace would be almost pure hydrogen and helium. The cosmic microwave background temperature in hyperspace might be around 50 K; that’s warm in comparison to what it is in our space (around 3 K), and warm enough to probably be a big part of the reason hyperspace has no stars (present day star-forming giant molecular cloud regions have gas temperatures around 10-20 K), but by human standards it’s deeply cold; it’s upper atmosphere of Uranus temperature. With no stars, I’d guess hyperspace would be a place of more-or-less total darkness outside the range of any lights humans passing through might bring with them.
Alternately, if I want hyperspace to have a murky and mysterious quality and be a place where visibility isn’t good and sensors don’t work well (so a vibe a bit like B5 hyperspace), I could say the Big Bang nucleosynthesis era lasted longer in hyperspace and there produced a substantial amount of heavy elements, some of which then condensed into dust (probably more like smoke if it’s similar to interstellar dust in our space - nanometer to micrometer particles). This dust would probably be pretty insubstantial on human scale distances (again, if it’s like the interstellar medium matter in hyperspace would be about 99% mostly hydrogen and helium gas and plasma and 1% dust, and even a relatively “dense” hyperspace with billions of atoms per cm^3 would have less than a billionth the gas density of sea level air), but over AUs it would scatter light and that effect might add up. This would make hyperspace similar to a dark nebula.
If I want to take the “hyperspace is a scary place” further, I could add sources of energy that might further confuse sensors and add dangerous radiation and other dangers to the mix. Maybe hyperspace has a few large black holes or something, with energetic accretion disks and polar jets fed by all that relatively dense gas and adding turbulence to it. Or maybe spacetime in hyperspace is “lumpier” than spacetime in our space and hyperspace has weird “rivers” formed by something related to whatever force drives cosmic expansion and some of the gas/plasma gets caught in that and accelerated to large fractions of the speed of light and then slams into the low-velocity material in the “still” parts in places, creating lots of turbulence and various other interesting and scary things (powerful magnetic fields, radiation, locally intense heat, maybe some of these collision zones are even giant naturally occurring inertial confinement fusion reactors; maybe that’s where the heavy elements in the dust come from). Maybe hyperspace has a lot of cosmic strings; it makes a certain intuitive sense that, hyperspace being more compact than our space, its cosmic eggshell might be densely veined with cracks.
This gets into another interesting aspect; hyperspace might have something equivalent to terrain; hyperspace travel may be easier in some directions than others. And there’s lots of worldbuilding and plot hooks you could hang from that idea.
For example, let’s look at that idea of hyperspace having “rivers” formed of exotic spacetime structures and filled with gas/plasma streams moving at high fractions of the speed of light. If the edge of these “rivers” has a gradual enough velocity gradient and the plasma in the “rivers” is ionized, with enough skill a spacecraft pilot might be able to catch that “current” with a magsail and ride it, then when they’d gotten about as far as they needed to go they could leave the “river” and do magsail braking against low-velocity plasma in the “still” areas. Just gotta be careful to stay well away from the dangerous collision zones! This might be a huge part of the short-cut offered by hyperspace travel! It could be that distances across hyperspace are only modestly shorter than distances across our space (say, Alpha Centauri is 1 light year away in hyperspace), but the really big savings is you can catch one of these hyperspace “currents” and use it to get up to large fractions of c without expending any fuel. A set-up like that does raise some awkward questions about conservation of energy, but I could say something like “the hyperspace ‘rivers’ are areas where dark energy is being converted into kinetic energy, slightly slowing down the expansion of the universe in the process.” It’s not like we know much about how dark energy works, or even what it is, so for all we know that’s a thing that might happen under certain conditions.
Those collision zones would generate substantial radiation, including light, so unlike a calm hyperspace a turbulent hyperspace with energetic “currents” would probably have light. Don’t know how bright it would be; all that dust (made of heavy elements built up over the eons by inertial confinement fusion in collision zones, I like that idea!) would absorb a lot of light over cosmic distances, and stars are pretty bright but most of our space is pretty dark.
That set-up would make hyperspace travel kind of like sailing; there would be “currents” or “winds” you want to catch, and travel might be a lot faster along directions where the currents are favorable. Travel times in hyperspace might only loosely correlate with distance; Alpha Centauri might take longer to reach than Zeta Reticuli. There would also be hazards you’d need to avoid, e.g. the collision zones.
Maybe part of the explanation for the Fermi Paradox might be that Earth is in the middle of a big “still” part of hyperspace; few ships went here because we’re in the middle of a cosmic doldrums that takes years to crawl across.
With a set-up like this, hyperspace may have “weather” that influences interstellar commerce, and “climate change” on historical timescales that influences the trajectories of interstellar societies. Ages when hyperspace is particularly turbulent might cause Dark Ages as hyperspace travel becomes very dangerous. Ages when hyperspace becomes unusually calm might also cause Dark Ages as there are no fast hyperspace “currents” to ride and hyperspace travel becomes relatively slow. In one age hyperspace “currents” may be arranged such that a world is isolated; a few thousand years later the hyperspace “currents” might have shifted and that previously isolated world might be much more accessible and back in the mainstream of interstellar civilization.
One wrinkle: a turbulent, energetic, opaque hyperspace such as this probably wouldn’t be good for sending radio signals across. Maybe the universe actually has multiple “basement” levels, hyperspace is just the one that’s “closest” to our “living room” level and the only one that’s “close” enough that ships can travel to and from it, but there’s a clearer layer that’s “farther away” but still “close” enough that you can send radio signals through it, and that “deeper” clear layer is the one used for interstellar communication. Bonus idea I like: the deep clear layer is even more compact than hyperspace (by orders of magnitude) so it’s overall a much better short-cut in every way except being “too far away” to send ships through it, so finding a way to send ships through it is a huge potential breakthrough that tantalizes generations of scientists and engineers who so far have not managed to figure out a way to do it.
Really, on that note, I like the idea that the universe is analogous to an onion with many “layers,” and hyperspace and the deep clear layer are just the layers that are most easily accessible from our space. There are a lot of “basements” below the deep clear layer, and generally as you get farther “down” the “basements” get smaller, denser, and hotter; going “down” is a little like time travelling to eras closer and closer to the Big Bang (though this isn’t a completely reliable rule - the deep clear layer is smaller than hyperspace and perhaps warmer, but seems to be a lot emptier; maybe most of its matter has been sucked into black holes?). Maybe the whole thing is a bit timey wimey wibbly wobbly and if you go “down” far enough you eventually hit what 2020s science knows as the moment of the Big Bang. As well as “basements” there are also “attics,” but they’re less accessible because going “up” is harder than going “down.” If going “down” into the basements is a little like time travelling to the early universe, going “up” into the attics is a little like time travelling to the deep future, to places that look kind of like what our space may look like in the deep future black hole era (assuming the Big Rip doesn’t destroy our universe before that deep future proton decay story has time to play out). The “attics” are vast, empty, and deeply cold; cosmic microwave background temperatures a tiny fraction of a degree above absolute zero and precious little else to generate energy, maybe one atom in every cubic kilometer of space. They probably expanded too quickly for stars to ever form there. The total number of layers might be large; maybe hundreds or thousands, maybe billions, maybe a number so big it would need to be expressed in scientific notation. I like this idea because it makes hyperspace feel less implausibly convenient for humans; we’re just taking advantage of a particularly convenient part of a big macrostructure that’s mostly inaccessible to us.
----------
Hyperspace is a natural phenomenon, so it probably isn’t going to be neatly quarantined to just being a thing humans can use for communication and travel. Hyperspace-related phenomena are going to show up in nature, and this offers a neat explanation for any exotic soft SF-ish natural phenomena you may be interested in incorporating into your setting.
Hyperspace (and other “basements” of our universe) also gives you a built-in parsimonious explanation for any other bits of soft SF technology your setting might feature. Want your setting to have e.g. Star Trek style forcefields? You can say they work through interaction with one of the “basement” layers of the universe.
On that note, I have an idea for a more hard SF version of the Babylon 5 “going beyond the Rim” thing or Stargate ascension, based on the “onion universe” concept I described above, which might serve as a partial explanation for the Fermi Paradox. Maybe some “layers” of the “onion” are “superhabitable” to advanced machine intelligences (though not to primitive flesh and blood beings like us). You know the aestivation hypothesis? If advanced machine intelligences could move to an “attic” they wouldn’t have to wait billions of years for our space to cool down; the cosmic microwave background temperatures in many of the “attics” would already be some tiny fraction of a degree above absolute zero. Maybe they could move to a nice big cold “attic” and live there and “mine” a nice compact “basement” that is rich in matter and energy, getting the best of both worlds. Most of these “attics” and “basements” would be completely inaccessible to humans, but beings with better technology and more resources might be able to access many more of them (or maybe even get beyond the “onion” and search the entire multiverse for universes with conditions more to their liking). So the universe’s most powerful and most enduring civilizations might usually leave our space and move to another “layer” or universe that has conditions more ideal for them, and thus be mostly undetectable to us.
--------------
See: the concept of hyperspace is loaded with potential plot and worldbuilding hooks if you use a little imagination, and I like that!

Resource tips when playing Genshin Impact, things the game won’t tell you.
I see a handful of new players, *cough* my mutuals *cough*, making mistakes when it comes to saving their resources and wasting their time by staying in a low world level.
Increasing your world level is always a good thing, when you increase your world level you have a better chance at getting larger and more better quality enemy drops, rewards from bosses, and artifacts. I understand there may be the fear of enemies in-game being too strong for your parties to handle, but players agree that accumulating your exp past the limit, like say AR25, is wasting your time, mora, and resin. Spending your resin at AR25 with accumulated exp, you are getting very low quality rewards in return with your world level 1 cap, when you could be getting much better rewards if you remove the cap and were in world level 4 for example. The jump in between enemy levels from world level 1 to 2 or 3 is not a huge gap to be honest, it’s not more than your characters can handle at level 40-50, it will take a little longer to defeat an enemy camp, but your party will survive. So, always remove your world level cap when you get the chance. If enemies really are difficult for you, co-op with someone at a higher AR, some are even willing to do the work for you because most high AR players are at endgame, bored with nothing to do, have your co-op join on and ask for help in your profile status. If the idea of co-op makes you feel uncomfortable for whatever reason, you can descend one world level in the menu, but I find that when I ascend, not once have I considered going down one level, even when my party is 20 levels lower than enemy bosses.
(One of the things I regret doing while playing this game was not following the advice from above, I was AR25 accumulating a lot of exp and not ascending my world level. When I ascended my world level, I believe the cap was 3? is where I stopped. I realized the enemies were not as difficult to fight as they were in world level 1. I’ve been leveling my characters accordingly equal to the world level, by the way, farming for exp books is what you should be focusing on when you’re a lower world level, I will elaborate that on another point. My party at level 50 were actually fine against enemies at level 62 and above, if you fight smartly, dodging and using your elemental reactions correctly, you can defeat them. I lost some hp between each character and the fights took longer than usual but that wasn’t a big deal, upon realizing that, I then realized that I wasted my whole time staying at AR25. It was like a moment of clarity, “oh my god, I stayed AR25 for maybe 2 months for no reason at all...I could’ve gotten more and better materials all this time and level my characters even faster.” So after that, I kept increasing my world level, but every 1 or few weeks, because I was dumb, didn’t listen to any advice, and didn’t farm enough exp books for more than 1 party when I should be when I was a lower AR, I needed to farm more exp for at least 2 or 3 parties. So you see, I wasted time and energy grinding, trying to catch up at higher world levels because I stayed way past than I should be in world level 1. It’s unfortunate when I see players in forums saying they don’t want to ascend because they don’t want to deal with the difficulty, or sometimes there are some arrogant players even boasting staying at a lower world level, asking higher AR players, what’s the point of ascending. Maybe when I was in world level 1, I probably wouldn’t care and maybe even agree, but now that I’m AR54, I realize how wrong that mindset is, it felt really sucky realizing I wasted free time staying at AR25 when I could’ve been like AR45, because now I have to play catch up, get characters to level 70 or 80, so that means wasting more time again to farm on top of already wasted time, it’s like starting the game all over. The game is so much funner when you’re at a higher AR, it feels really nice being rewarded with high quality loot, and if you’re like me, the challenges makes the game more interesting, especially when you have figured out the mechanics by now.)
Focus on getting materials and not artifacts when you’re below AR45/world level 5. When you’re at a low AR level, you should prioritize your daily resin to farming mora/exp leylines and materials for character ascension/talents/weapons. You’ll realize the higher you upgrade your characters, the more exp and mora you’ll need to upgrade all ascensions. Like the chart says in the link, the chances you’ll get any high quality artifacts is extremely rare to impossible at lower world levels. At world level 6-8 (the average that most players playing since launch are at), no one is using 1-3 star artifacts (they’re used as fodder for 5 star ones, so save your 1-3 star artifacts and don’t level them), even most 4 star artifacts stay in their inventory. Every AR45+ player are equipping 5 star artifacts on their characters, because they give them the best stats boost for their dps carries at endgame. Supports can make use of the 4 star artifacts however, if you don’t have enough 5 star ones, because they don’t stay on the field as long as dps characters do, but when you do get enough 5 star artifacts for your supports, replace the 4 stars. I say artifact farming should be reserved for when you get to AR45. When you are at AR45, you unlock the restriction that allows you the chance to get 5 star artifacts. Note that the link in the first bullet point says you’re guaranteed at least one 5 star artifact, whichever artifact you’ll get will also be random, so you may not get the exact artifact that you’re looking for, at that point you just have to try again, domain farming is just like gacha. Players would argue whether you should start farming at AR45 or AR50, I am of the opinion that you start farming at 45 for a couple of reasons. First, you get 5 star artifacts early, second, even if your haul from farming are undesirable artifacts, you can use them as fodder for your eventual perfect 5 star artifact with the right stats, and you’re gonna need a lot of fodder to enhance the perfect one. You’re gonna be farming artifacts for quite awhile which I will explain in the next point. (tbe)
Save your fragile resins for artifact farming, save as much as you can because farming for them sucks so bad (rng). (tbe)
Prioritize what you should be leveling for your characters. What I think people don’t realize is, talents are very important to level up maybe more so than leveling your character’s levels. Leveling your characters only upgrades their base hp, def, atk, and special stat, pretty basic and standard. However, leveling your talents, determines how much dmg your character is outputting with their auto attacks, elemental skill, and burst. Everyone has their opinion but my belief is the order should go: ascend character but do not level to max -> level talents to max (at AR35, if not AR35, level weapons then talents) -> level weapons to max -> level artifacts (at AR45, if not AR 45, skip this) -> go back to leveling characters in order to ascend, and then repeat. As far as character role priority goes, I think everyone is aware you should invest in dps/hyper carries -> dps/sub-dps -> supports. (tbe)
Don’t max every stat for your characters, ie. character levels 90/90, talent levels 10/10, especially if you’re f2p, it is very mora costly and spreads your resources thin. You don’t need to be maxed out in order for your characters to be strong or stand a chance against enemies. As you can see from the second link, the power difference between a level 80 character vs. a level 90 character is a small increment, depending on the character’s multipliers, their increase in damage from 80 to 90 ranges from 1-4%. It doesn’t make a huge difference in gameplay. Stat increases start to slow down or get smaller when your character is ascending towards levels 70-90. Most players, especially f2p, who are trying to save as much resources as they can, invest in at least 8 characters/2 good teams to level 70 or 80 all the way towards endgame, because spiral abyss requires 2 teams. So f2p players have to spread out their resources evenly to 8 characters. If you are trying to get every character in your roster to reach level 90, you will burn out your resources very quickly. Say you’ve been playing and farming materials since launch and you’re leveling characters to 90, you most likely will get about 4 characters maxed while everyone else is too low level to make any damage. Another thing about ascensions is just that it is so costly, it costs up to hundred thousands of mora, on top of that, you spend more mora per level up and you have to do it for 8 characters, a few million mora can evaporate fairly quickly when you factor in crafting, forging, buying ingredients you can’t find in the wild, enhancing weapons/artifacts, and upgrading talents. For point of reference, at AR54 my dps characters are level 80/90 and my support characters are level 70/80, talent levels 6-8 for all (at AR54-55 however, you should have talents level 8/8/8 for dps or support at least, that is a good stopping point), most artifacts (5 stars) at level 20, weapons at level 80 or 90. My teams can take on enemies 10 or 20 levels above them just fine, it may take longer to kill an enemy but it’s more fun than one-shotting in my opinion. Talents are the same as ascensions but they are even more costly than ascensions, more time consuming to level up because they require enemy drops from weekly bosses, and the drops are rng, you’re not guaranteed the exact material you need for a specific character, it may even take weeks until you get the right material (in the 1.5 update however, there will be a converter given to players who want to exchange a material they have for something else, but there is no further info about this yet). The unfortunate thing about this game is that there is too much rng factoring into chance, this is the most common complaint in the community and even though many have sent feedback about this, nothing much has changed since launch, it’s just something you have bitterly swallow. Talents are still very important despite all this, don’t neglect them (Tip: whenever a character banner comes out and they allow you to have a trial with them, you should check their character screen, take a look at their stats, artifacts, weapons, talents, that’s usually a model you should aim for. A perfect example, in Xiao’s trial, Mihoyo made him level 80, gave him talent levels 8/8/8, and gave him 2 Viridescent and 2 Gladiator 5 star artifacts to fight level 90 enemies for testing, and that is the exact set I see a lot of Xiao users in-game and on youtube used after his trial, they all just followed what Mihoyo set up for him). Always max out your weapons, there is no downside to this, your characters gain stat bonuses from them and get stronger, the best thing about it is that you don’t have to spend resin for it, you just have to mine ore as a daily routine. Take advantage of the adventurer expeditions, always keep on top of it, and always assign characters to get ore or mora.
There are some exceptions to maxing out your characters, however. Some people have their favorite characters up to level 90 with crowned talents (level 10), that’s totally fine, mainly the reason they would do that is because they love this particular character a lot, they love their playstyle and don’t plan on ever benching them soon. Youtubers like to show off their maxed out characters as a flex, you don’t have to follow their actions though, it’s not mandatory. Only max out a character because it’s personal for you, don’t think it’s like “oh I have to reach the max because that’s required to play the game,” it’s not that. Another reason for maxing is that maybe this character is a hypercarry and their multipliers are too good to ignore if they were at 90, for example, Hu Tao is a special case, she is a hypercarry and has the lowest base stats with average multipliers I believe, of all released characters, but her Staff of Homa makes up for that by giving her an insane crit damage boost (62%), but for a Hu Tao player who doesn’t have Staff of Homa, the sound of her at level 90 to give her a boost sounds appealing to them. If you’d like a model to follow by, the recommended levels I suggest for endgame would be - DPS: level 80/90 (level 80 ascended), talent levels 8/8/8 at least; 9/9/9 if you can, weapon level 90/90, 5 star artifacts at maxed level (look for crit rate/damage stats on each artifact). Supports/Sub-DPS: level 60/70 (level 60 ascended) or level 70/80 (level 70 ascended) respectively, talent levels 6/6/6 (supports); 7/7/7; 8/8/8 (sub-dps), weapon level 90/90, 5 star artifacts at maxed level (sub-dps), 4 star at maxed is ok (supports), but majority should be 5 stars like 1:4 or 2:3 (look for crit rate/damage, energy recharge, elemental mastery, and depending on what the character scales with, attack, hp, and defense stats). Follow what suits you best by taking a look at the first link.
Prioritize your support/sub-dps characters over dps characters. (tbe)

Would it be that impossible for dd and gg to come out as a couple (provided they respected censorship and didn't talk about it with the media)? I read the other day that homosexuality is not illegal in China, just talking about it and showing in the media, so could not someone as brave and crazy as dd attempt to come out outside of the media? after all they are the first 3 shipped real couples in china, they do have support. Coming out willingly would also save them from being eventually outed..
Hi, anon! (*this blogger cracks her neck and gets ready*) Let’s get into it!
Disclaimer: fake fake fake. Why would you think that we believe in bjyx?
Preface: this post might not be exactly a controversial opinion, since I think many will have the same one. However, it’s alright to disagree: we all have our own perception of the matter, which is coloured by our own experiences (let’s just say that an absolute objective view is difficult). I present here with the most objective post (at least in terms of data and facts) I could write.
Oh, and you all might have noticed, but being concise is not my forte. I tend to digress.
First of all, I assume that the concept of “coming out outside of the media” means that they could have told just close friends and family, without announcing it to the media.
But how would we know that they have done it? (and I don’t mean we should know for sure, ofc). For all we know, they may have already done this, and, from my pov, they probably have. Without entering in “fake” rumours:
TTXS bros know something (repeating myself for the nth time). From the way DZW jumps in whenever it remotely looks like dd is slipping up, how WH poses his questions, how QF teases him. It all seems references to a real, tangible thing, instead of baseless friendly teasing. It’s also very interesting that they have stopped their matchmaking mission and have instead started to defend why dd is “single”.
Their parents are their cover. Even if dd parents didn’t watch TTXS, wouldn’t someone else watch it and ask them about it? Wouldn’t they wonder about the supposed clothes that dd sends home, the medicine, the market stroll? Maybe I’m just projecting, but I wouldn’t use my parents as a shield if they weren’t aware of the situation behind it, because I’d be subjected to their questioning later. That’s why, unless I wanted to tell them or I had already told them, I wouldn’t use my parents as an excuse. So, once is alright, but dd has done it several times, and that, for me, means that his parents know.
That’s what I would consider “coming outside the media”. Of course, this doesn’t involve us fans, and it’s their decision, of which we probably will never hear about (or, at least, not soon, and that’s fine!).
In my opinion, it’s also the best course of action, especially with all the rumours that are always circulating about them. It wouldn’t be a “brave and crazy” course of action, but rather the most sensible and rational, since it’s the best way to avoid misunderstandings with your friends and family. It’s also considerate for his friends at work, just so they know what to expect when they are on stage and it allows them to understand dd’s reactions.
(Again, we are talking about dd because that’s who anon asked about. I think gg’s circle is less close to him, so it may not be the case with him, but I don’t know enough to say what would happen).
Just let’s suppose his TTXS bros didn’t know anything and just kept trying to act as matchmakers for dd. That’s the kind of situation that’s bound to be uncomfortable for everyone because dd isn’t the kind of person who’d lie (and he doesn’t fast enough to improptu questions).
The second thing I wanted to talk about is their fans’ support. I want to talk about numbers.
I’m going to explain why I only take the c-fans data as reference. We int fans don’t really count, because we don’t affect their careers directly, as c-fans do. Of course, our support is very useful in showing how many people are rooting for them, like what happened when Roseonly’s livestream with gg was live. And I like to think that they would feel better knowing that there are a lot of people in Chn and overseas that support them and whatever there is between them.
So int-fans do contribute to give more views and likes to their Roseonly livestream (if they can access it, which isn’t always the case), but they won’t buy the roses and impact with real money, so to say.
We don’t really participate in their endorsements, many won’t stay long enough to watch more dramas from them (and I do understand that the lack of eng subs is the main problem), and many don’t/can’t/don’t know how to push them up in the charts. We’ve talked before about how the c-ent industry doesn’t really need the int audience to make a lot of money, and to be highly profitable, and it still applies in a smaller case, like a single idol.
That’s why I think that in matters of real, tangible fan support, c-fans still make a bigger percentage (around 80-90%) of their support.
So, as of now, there are 3 supertopics in w/ibo that features gg/dd (let’s leave the difference in supertopics for another day, but I don’t support the discussion about people’s sex life, thanks for your understanding):
BJYX. The largest supertopic (top 1) with a wide margin from the others. It has 2.570.000 fans.
ZSWW. It’s the number 5 in the CP supertopics, with 910.000 fans.
LXFY. The number 23 in the CP supertopics with 590.000 fans.
All of them added make 4.070.000 fans. But we have to take into account the overlapping in these three supertopics: many people (like me) are following the three supertopics at the same time. That’s why, in a not scientific way, I’m guessing that those 4.070.000 come to around 4.000.000 once you take out the people that are following the three at the same time.
Even 4 million people is still a huge number of people: that’s more people than the population of the capital of my country, and one tenth of the total census here.
Yet, in China, it means 4 out of every 1400, which translates into 0′003%. It’s also from a very specific demographic (mainly female and young). Of course, it doesn’t mean that they won’t get support from other people if it ever got out, but they can’t know what would happen then for sure.
It means that, in actual 3D world, there are a lot of people who don’t know about their CP. I read the other day some tumblr blogger saying that “we bxg are in our own little bubble, not that many people know about their cp” (was that you, @jcisthebestfightme?) which I agree a lot with. I mean, my w/ibo account and tumblr is filled with bjyx/yizhan, so much that it’s easy to forget that I arranged it to be like this, but that the majority of the people don’t receive so much info about them, nor they analyze their every move like we do.
The only thing they can know for sure is what general population thinks about same sex relationships.
In a recent poll I saw, with thousands of answers about what netizens thought of the legalization of same sex marriage in Taiwan, the supporting votes didn’t get to 50%. In Taiwan, public opinion was like this around the time same sex marriage was legalized:
An opinion poll conducted in November 2016 by the Kuomintang found that 52% of the Taiwanese population supported same-sex marriage, while 43% were opposed. Another poll commissioned that same month found similar numbers: 55% in support, and 45% in opposition. Support was higher among 20–29-year-olds (80%), but decreased significantly with age. (Wikipedia)
(I just want to say, I can’t wait for the younger generations to take over).
More data: the public stance in China could be described as: “no approval, no disapproval, no promotion”, and the public opinion is becoming more and more tolerant, but there’s still a deep-set homophobia, as in only 5% of the lgbt people comes out completely (around 20% comes out to their family), and around 80% of gay men are married to women due to social and family pressure (ofc, these data is from a few years ago, and new polls and surveys are needed, but don’t expect them to carry out a wide-range survey about this nor I think the situation has changed drastically).
In my opinion, society is slowly taking more steps towards tolerance first and acceptance second. One of their best achievement was the lgbt community and many netizens’ refusal to allow w/ibo to instate a ban on content related to homosexuality, which led to w/ibo actually reversing its decision and stop banning that content in less than 3 days.
However, the fact that a lot of people express their support doesn’t take away the truth of a lot of people openly opposing it (let’s remember that there weren’t so many antis to start with in 2/27, but its effects were undeniably large and unjust).
(If any of you read more data about lgbt rights in China, please remember that Hong Kong receives a lot more Western influence, and that public opinion in HK does not represent the actual situation in mainland Chn. Ofc, because they’re more open to lgbt, there are also more data and polls carried out in HK, so a lot of info is HK based).
Leaving this kind of data aside, let’s take another matter of numbers. While they have in total 4 million fans in the supertopics, dd has as of now 35,400,000 fans following him on w/ibo and gg has 26,690,000 fans.
One thing I’m sure they are aware of is the discussion that arises from time to time between the solo fans and the bxg. Another thing they must be aware of, specially dd, is that their fanbase has a lot of females who are their fans, not just because of their talent, but also because they’re single and therefore they can fantasize about being with them.
All in all, even though a lot of people support them, there would be also quite a number of “disappointed” people, with the danger of them becoming antis.
So while I do think they appreciate it, and leave clues specifically for us, and dd goes as far as interacting with bxg, I also feel that gg and dd might not see widespread support, enough so they’d feel comfortable coming out completely with the current public stance on homosexual relationships in Chn.
(And again, from my pov, they aren’t in the closet with their family and friends).
And last, but not least, does “coming out respecting the censorship and not talking about it with the media” mean that it would be known by the general public, or, at least, their fans (in a very hypothetic case, since I don’t know how this could be achieved)? Because then, even if they didn’t talk about it with the media, it would be as good as coming out publicly.
In an idol’s life there’s no “private” and “public”. There’s only “public” and “secret” (and by secret I mean things they “hide” in public/don’t talk about, even though people next to them might know about it). The line between public and private is very very blurred in the c-ent industry.
I always remember the case of an actor who had an affair. Because of his affair (he was married and had a son), he lost endorsements, he was taken out of tv programs and literally erased from filmed episodes. The things he did in private affected very directly his job (I don’t approve of the affair, but the consequences it had surprised me a lot).
So, while I do think that gg and dd are getting bolder with time, when they were both very startled by the “you’d lose your job if you were in a relationship” phrase, the fear was real and palpable. However, I’m aware that that was their stance a year ago, and that a lot of things have changed (heck, we’ve gone through a pandemic, something I couldn’t have imagined a year ago), so I’m going to observe how they act from now.
That’s why, “coming out willingly would also save them from being eventually outed..” is true, but it’s also true that it would push them into a storm I’m not sure they’d come out completely unscathed. And it may be selfish, but I don’t want them to be the ones who test the public’s tolerance to gay idols.
I think I’m missing my point, so I’ll spell it out: if they want to come out, I’ll support them with everything I have, as I think many fans will do. If they ever prove us wrong dating another person, be it male or female, I’ll support them as a fan too. But I would like any action they take to be decided by them, instead of pressed by fans who just want a confirmation at any cost.
I’ve seen people saying that if they were really together, they should be “honest” with themselves and the audience and come out publicly. In my opinion, it’s easy to judge when you’re not the one who might lose something if you take a step in the wrong direction, and it’s not your income and your job in the line.
I’m sure (reminding you all that I believe that bjyxszd) that they’d come out completely if possible. I’m also sure that they have consulted with managers and public relations experts (and their team would have talked with them about it even if gg and dd didn’t bring it up). Therefore, I strongly believe they are doing what they think is better at the time being.
To sum up: I’ll support whatever they do, but I don’t want others to push them to do things they don’t want/aren’t prepared to do. They are already between a rock and a hard place, so whatever they do with their relationship is absolutely their call.
So, anon, I hope I have answered you, but I leave here a short summary for you in the case the info was too scattered for you:
Would it be that impossible for dd and gg to come out as a couple (provided they respected censorship and didn't talk about it with the media)? I read the other day that homosexuality is not illegal in China, just talking about it and showing in the media, so could not someone as brave and crazy as dd attempt to come out outside of the media?
They might have come out to friends and family, and, based on dd’s interactions with the people around him and the words he has said, I do believe he has. Because gg is also an honest, sensible person, I think he might have done the same.
after all they are the first 3 shipped real couples in china, they do have support
Chn is a big country. That means that in terms of public support, sometimes numbers that would be astronomically high in other countries, is not so much in Chn. Translating numbers into percentage, a 1% means 14 million people.
So it’s true that they have a lot of people supporting them, of course. 2 million people is a lot of people, especially considering that many don’t know about them. But when you have to take into account the general public (because it’d be a scandal), since their fans aren’t the only ones interacting with them, it’s still a low number.
Coming out willingly would also save them from being eventually outed..
That’s true in the case of family and friends. But if you’re talking about being outed in the media, that’s not possible. Known by the fans = Public.
And remember that in this case, the media wouldn’t talk about them, since talking about homosexuality in the media is prohibited. The problem would come from within the industry and the antis.

Hostile school board meetings have members calling it quits (AP) A Nevada school board member said he had thoughts of suicide before stepping down amid threats and harassment. In Virginia, a board member resigned over what she saw as politics driving decisions on masks. The vitriol at board meetings in Wisconsin had one member fearing he would find his tires slashed. School board members are largely unpaid volunteers, traditionally former educators and parents who step forward to shape school policy, choose a superintendent and review the budget. But a growing number are resigning or questioning their willingness to serve as meetings have devolved into shouting contests between deeply political constituencies over how racial issues are taught, masks in schools, and COVID-19 vaccines and testing requirements. In his letter of resignation from Wisconsin’s Oconomowoc Area School Board, Rick Grothaus said its work had become “toxic and impossible to do.” “When I got on, I knew it would be difficult,” Grothaus, a retired educator, said by phone. “But I wasn’t ready or prepared for the vitriolic response that would occur, especially now that the pandemic seemed to just bring everything out in a very, very harsh way. It made it impossible to really do any kind of meaningful work.”
California fire approaches Lake Tahoe after mass evacuation (AP) A ferocious wildfire swept toward Lake Tahoe on Tuesday just hours after roads were clogged with fleeing cars when the entire California resort city of South Lake Tahoe was ordered to evacuate and communities just across the state line in Nevada were warned to get ready to leave. The popular vacation haven normally filled with tens of thousands of summer tourists emptied out Monday as the massive Caldor Fire rapidly expanded. Vehicles loaded with bikes and camping gear and hauling boats were in gridlock traffic, stalled in hazy, brown air that smelled like a campfire. Police and other emergency vehicles whizzed by. “It’s more out of control than I thought,” evacuee Glen Naasz said of the fire that by late Monday had been pushed by strong winds across California highways 50 and 89, burning mountain cabins as it swept down slopes into the Tahoe Basin.
Hurricane Ida traps Louisianans, shatters the power grid (AP) Rescuers set out in hundreds of boats and helicopters to reach people trapped by floodwaters Monday, and utility repair crews rushed in, after a furious Hurricane Ida swamped the Louisiana coast and ravaged the electrical grid in the sticky, late-summer heat. People living amid the maze of rivers and bayous along the state’s Gulf Coast retreated desperately to their attics or roofs and posted their addresses on social media with instructions for search-and-rescue teams on where to find them. More than 1 million customers in Louisiana and Mississippi—including all of New Orleans—were left without power as Ida, one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland, pushed through on Sunday and early Monday before weakening into a tropical storm. As it continued to make its way inland with torrential rain and shrieking winds, it was blamed for at least two deaths. But with many roads impassable and cellphone service knocked out in places, the full extent of its fury was still coming into focus. The governor’s office said damage to the power grid appeared “catastrophic.” And local officials warned it could be weeks before power is fully restored, leaving multitudes without refrigeration or air conditioning during the dog days of summer, with highs forecast in the mid-80s to close to 90 by midweek.
Heavily armed criminal group ties hostages to getaway cars after storming Brazilian city (Washington Post) A heavily armed group of bank robbers wreaked havoc across a southeastern Brazilian city early Monday, striking several banks, setting fire to vehicles and tying hostages to their getaway cars, in an assault that left at least three people dead, officials say. Even in a country long accustomed to random spasms of violence, Brazilians reacted with shock and fear. The group stormed Araçatuba, a city of 200,000 in São Paulo state, around midnight to strike several city banking agencies. Gunshots punctured the early-morning quiet. Authorities asked residents to stay inside. Images on social media and local news reports showed at least 10 people clinging to getaway cars, apparently strapped there to deter fire from police. The hostages were reportedly released after the group escaped. The raid bore the characteristics of what criminologists have called a growing pattern: nighttime assaults on midsize Brazilian cities—often elaborate bank heists, intricately planned, well choreographed and executed by well-financed criminal groups equipped with the weaponry and gadgetry of war. The group flew a drone over Araçatuba during the raid, according to local reports, to track movements throughout the city.
EU travel restrictions (AP) The European Union recommended Monday that its 27 nations reinstate restrictions on tourists from the U.S. because of rising coronavirus infections there, but member countries will keep the option of allowing fully vaccinated U.S. travelers in. The EU’s decision reflects growing anxiety that the rampant spread of the virus in the U.S. could jump to Europe at a time when Americans are allowed to travel to the continent. Both the EU and the U.S. have faced rising infections this summer, driven by the more contagious delta variant. The guidance issued Monday is nonbinding, however. American tourists should expect a mishmash of travel rules across the continent since the EU has no unified COVID-19 tourism policy and national EU governments have the authority to decide whether or how they keep their borders open during the pandemic.
Italy’s record droughts (La Stampa) The earth is cracking in Italy’s northwest region of Piedmont: the crops and the animals suffer. Italy has been ravaged by fires and storms, like Greece, Turkey and much of Southern Europe. Italy has recorded 1,200 “extreme” meteorological events—a 56% increase from last year. Wildfires ravaged the southern regions of Sardinia, Calabria and Sicily. The town of Florida, in Sicily, is thought to have recorded the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe: 48.8 °C. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall devastated other parts of the country. Coldiretti, Italy’s largest agricultural association, has just summed up the bill for this Italian summer: The damages to agriculture, it says, amount to €1 billion. Wheat yields have fallen 10%; cherries 30%, nectarines 40%. Tomato and corn crops have also suffered heavy losses. Giovanni Bedino, a 59-year-old Italian farmer, has been working the land since he was 15. “I love this job, but a year like this takes away your love,” he told Turin daily La Stampa. “We couldn’t water the fields and nothing came down from the sky. I remember, the summer of 2003 was a very difficult one—but it wasn’t even close to this year. I have never seen such a drought.”
In India, a debate over population control turns explosive (Washington Post) Yogi Adityanath, a star of India’s political right wing, stood before television cameras in his trademark saffron tunic and dramatically introduced a bill pushing for smaller families—two children at most. In previous decades, this measure by the leader of the country’s most populous state might have been uncontroversial. Over the past month, it’s been explosive. Critics saw a veiled attempt to mobilize Hindu voters by tapping into an age-old trope about India’s Muslim population ballooning out of control. As India barrels toward a pivotal election in Uttar Pradesh early next year, population bills introduced by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have become a new flash point in the national debate, vividly illustrating how the issues of religion and identity, spoken or implied, form the most powerful undercurrent in the country’s politics. Since 2011, when official census figures emerged showing Hindus dipping to 80 percent of India’s population compared to 84 percent in 1951—Muslims increased from 10 percent to 14.2 percent during that same period—the question of how to maintain “demographic balance” has gained urgency for the Hindu movement’s leaders. A 2016 national survey finding that Indian Muslim women had, on average, 2.6 children compared to 2.1 for Hindus provoked more concern.
North Korea appears to have restarted Yongbyon nuclear reactor, U.N. body says (Washington Post) North Korea appears to have restarted its main nuclear reactor at Yongbyon in July, a “deeply troubling” sign that the country may be on track to expand its nuclear program, according to a new report by the United Nations’ atomic agency. The finding adds another challenge to the Biden administration’s goal of denuclearizing North Korea. Although Yongbyon is not the only site where North Korea has produced highly enriched uranium, its role at the heart of Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions made the facility a bargaining chip in previous negotiations. In 2008, North Korea ceremoniously blew up the reactor’s cooling tower in a largely made-for-TV event amid nuclear talks between the United States and former leader Kim Jong Il. (A new cooling tower was built after the negotiations fell through.)
Last troops exit Afghanistan, ending America’s longest war (AP) The United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan late Monday, ending America’s longest war and closing a chapter in military history likely to be remembered for colossal failures, unfulfilled promises and a frantic final exit that cost the lives of more than 180 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members, some barely older than the war. Hours ahead of President Joe Biden’s Tuesday deadline for shutting down a final airlift, and thus ending the U.S. war, Air Force transport planes carried a remaining contingent of troops from Kabul airport. Thousands of troops had spent a harrowing two weeks protecting a hurried and risky airlift of tens of thousands of Afghans, Americans and others seeking to escape a country once again ruled by Taliban militants. In announcing the completion of the evacuation and war effort. Gen. Frank McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, said the last planes took off from Kabul airport at 3:29 p.m. Washington time, or one minute before midnight in Kabul. He said a number of American citizens, likely numbering in “the very low hundreds,” were left behind, and that he believes they will still be able to leave the country. The final pullout fulfilled Biden’s pledge to end what he called a “forever war” that began in response to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and rural Pennsylvania.
Afghanistan’s ‘Gen Z’ fears for future and hard-won freedoms (Reuters) Almost two third of Afghans are under the age of 25, and an entire generation cannot even remember the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until it was toppled by Western-backed militia in 2001. During that time they enforced a strict interpretation of Islamic law, banning girls from school, women from work and carrying out public executions. Since 2001, the militants fought an insurgency in which thousands of Afghans died. Since re-taking power, the group has been quick to reassure students that their education would not be disrupted, also saying it would respect the rights of women and urging talented professionals not to leave the country. But used to a life with cellphones, pop music and mixing of genders, Afghanistan’s “Generation Z”—born roughly in the decade around the turn of the millennium—now fears some freedoms will be taken away, according to interviews with half a dozen Afghan students and young professionals. “I made such big plans, I had all these high reaching goals for myself that stretched to the next 10 years,” said Sosan Nabi, a 21-year-old graduate. “We had a hope for life, a hope for change. But in just one week, they took over the country and in 24 hours they took all our hopes, dreams snatched from in front of our eyes. It was all for nothing.”
They made it out of Afghanistan. But their path ahead is uncertain. (Washington Post) As the United States winds down its evacuation operation in Afghanistan, the Biden administration is accelerating efforts to resettle Afghans on U.S. soil, where they will be expected to apply for visas or humanitarian protection that could put them on a path to legal residency and citizenship. But the chaotic nature of the enormous airlift means that much is unknown: Officials have not said precisely how many Afghan evacuees have made it into the United States or whether all will be allowed to stay. More than 117,000 people had been evacuated from Afghanistan on U.S. and other flights as of Saturday, and Pentagon officials said the vast majority are Afghan citizens. Thousands have arrived in the United States, while thousands more are waiting in “transit hubs” in Europe and the Middle East. They are a mix of brand-new refugees and families with existing immigration applications that have been pending for months or years. Where the evacuees will end up is “a hard question to answer,” said Mark Hetfield, president and CEO of HIAS, one of the refugee resettlement agencies operating in the United States. “I don’t really know where they stand,” Hetfield said in an interview. “It’s chaos.”

Having the Time of My Life Overanalyzing Voltron Science, A Visual Novel
Tumblr media
The team’s little mantra in the original show was “ Activate interlock! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! Let’s go Voltron Force!” And they said this each and every single time their 5 lions formed together into the combined robot.
In today’s essay I will be deeply examining and wildly speculating about what exactly interlocks, dynatherms, infracells, and mega thrusters are, why it’s entirely crucial that these 4 items be part of the Voltron preflight checklist, and explaining why (or at least inferring that) you should take it all seriously.
Interlock
The Interlock is easy. It’s probably whatever system is used to attach the 5 lions together. So what are they? Magnets? Docking rings like on spacecraft? Just mechanical latches? Hard to say. But something as simple as a mechanical latch isn’t something you’d have to ‘activate’ or actively call out during pre-flight, so I would suspect ‘interlock’ is likely a catch-all term for not only the mechanical attachments, but also the control circuit used to synchronize the computers onboard all 5 lions. It would be a complex integrated system within the black lion, which also explains why they refer to it in the singular instead of plural.
Without the interlock, Voltron would just be the 5 lion with their individual brains tied together like duct-taped dogs. The interlock synchronizes them into a common intelligence, under the direction of the centralized black lion.
Tumblr media
I don’t know what the mechanical structure of the interlocks would be. Conventional material science would suggest that a robot as large as Voltron wouldn’t be able to even stand, let alone run and jump and fight, so even if we assume nearly-indestructible exotic alien materials, I think you would still want something more than hooks and pins to connect the various pieces together. It would be best if the actual structural elements could somehow fuse at the molecular level. Welding is the most obvious method for that, but there’s also Vaan-Der-Waals forces, which could bond together flat surfaces that could then be slid apart. And maybe if you had superconducting cables running between the elements and then ran a ton of current through them, then you could use magnetic binding? I’m not sure if that would work, but it sounds futuristic enough to be true. IDK.
Dynatherms
I can’t tell if this is ‘dynatherms’ or ‘dinotherms’, but the first sounds less prehistoric, so I’ll go with that. So it sounds like pieces of the words ‘dynamic’ and ‘thermal’ mashed together, which don’t really mean anything except in the context of thermodynamics, so.... What is this? A reactor? A steam engine?
Of all the various components this one puzzled me longest, but I think I’ve got it.
The dynatherms are the cooling system, meant to radiate away the massive amounts of heat its engines and motors would generate. Most spacecraft, heck most vehicles in general, have a system analogous to this. Here’s the one the ISS uses:
Tumblr media
Voltron doesn’t have any weird extendo-wings like this, but it’s conceivable that they could be built directly into the outer layer of its armor. The black lion’s little red wings are likely a part of the system too. If you ask me, the surface area of its armor isn’t nearly enough to dissipate enough heat to keep a thing like this cool, but I think I can ignore that.
Tumblr media
So anyway. At first this explanation doesn’t seem to fit, since they say ‘dynatherms connected’, not ‘coolant pumps started’ or ‘refrigerant levels maximum’ or something. You don’t ‘connect’ the heat radiators, they’re always connected. You just pump water through them. Right?
Wrong! Here’s my sufficiently futuristic explanation: Voltron’s cooling system doesn’t use coolant and pumps or any type of conventional refrigeration at all! Instead, the ‘dynatherms’ are a network of thermally superconductive cables connecting all its motors and engines to radiative armor panels on the exterior. Thermal superconductivity is a concept I learned from Star Wars and later found out is a real-ish thing. Basically any vibrations in any part of a thermally-superconductive material can frictionlessly travel to any other part of the material. Since temperature is based on vibrations, this means that if a hot thing touches one part of the material, everything else touching the material can instantly feel that heat, and even dissipate that heat. You can think of it as Marvel vibranium or as warmth communism.
Since there’s no fluid flow, the only way to control this cooling system or increase or decrease its dissipation is to connect and disconnect individual cables. Hence why they would have to connect the dynatherms before forming Voltron; combat in combined robot mode is one of the most taxing conditions of the machine’s operation, so they need all the cooling they can get.
Infracells
Now HERE’S where it starts to get interesting. ‘Infra’ roughly means ‘below’. To take the most common example, take ‘infrared’ light, that is, light existing at frequencies lower red light, which is itself the lowest frequency in the visible spectrum. Infrared is invisible, so the only way to describe its color is ‘somewhere below red’.
So as far as I can tell, ‘infracells’ could mean one of three things. They could be some kind of infrared light sensors, like FLIR imagers used for night vision and targeting on modern military equipment (which I consider unlikely, since that’s not the type of thing you would specifically call out during the preflight, or something intrinsically useful to the Voltron assembly process.) Or it could be an armor layer consisting of some kind of cells literally ‘below’ the rest of the armor (which I also consider unlikely, because why would that be important to the Voltron assembly either? You wouldn’t need to even worry about it until you take damage to the outer armor layer, right?) Or, finally and most interestingly, it could have something to do with lower frequencies or lower speeds in general.
Here’s my theory:
The infracells cause time itself to run differently. You all saw the movie Interstellar, where time aboard the spacecraft passed slower for the crew whenever they were inside powerful gravity wells. If you had high buildups of negative energy within cells inside Voltron, it would produce the opposite effect, causing time to move faster inside the cells than outside. Anything inside would experience the rest of the universe in slower motion, meaning lower acceleration, lower forces, and lower stress.
Therefore, if such ‘infracells’ were installed around Voltron’s skeletal frame and motors, it may explain the machine’s great strength and indestructibility. And it would make sense that this would be the type of thing they would call out during the pre-flight, as even one down infracell could spell disaster once that section of the frame is attempting to support the entire weight of the robot; it would buckle and break. Every infracell needs to be up before forming Voltron.
Tumblr media
Mega thrusters
Now, this just sounds silly. They’re likely the engines that Voltron uses to fly, but the show creators put ‘mega’ in front of the name to sound cool. Might as well call them ‘super rockets’ or ‘the ultra drive’, right? But mega is an interesting word, as it’s actually a scientific term in the metric system meaning to multiply by a million. Like a kilometer is a thousand meters and a kilogram is a thousand grams, a megameter is a million meters, and a megagram is a 1000 kilograms. You may have heard of ‘megaton’ when referring to nuclear explosives; a three-megaton bomb is a bomb with the explosive yield equivalent to three million tons of TNT. A lot.
So, uh,
Tumblr media
Why would you call a thruster a ‘mega thruster’, then?
Well, I know approximately jack-diddly about the original show, but I know that in the newer show, most large spacecraft in the universe get their energy not from nuclear reactors or solar cells, but rather from Balmeran crystals. The crystals are able to produce apparently infinite energy so long as you don’t damage them or overtax them. I don’t know where the crystals get their infinite energy, but that’s not what I’m here to speculate about, so I’ll just treat that as one of the universe’s rules, like bending in Avatar.
Tumblr media
So! How do you set that up to make an engine? Well, infinite power is good! Higher power to the engine means hotter, faster exhaust, and hotter, faster exhaust means higher fuel efficiency and higher thrust. So the question becomes, how do you get the most power in the safest and most efficient way possible?
For the sake of some rules, let’s say that you need to give the crystals a little bit of stimulating energy to make them produce energy. That seems fair, I think. Let’s say they produce 5 times the energy they absorb.
Tumblr media
So you give a crystal 1 watt, you get 5. That’s great; that means if we need 50 billion watts to run the thruster, we just need to get a big crystal, and feed it 10 billion watts. However! Where do we get that initial 10 billion watts?  Well we could just take a portion of the crystal’s own output and cycle it back around to the input, but that’s a dangerous game to play, since if the percentage you cycle around is even slightly more than 20%, you could create a “positive feedback loop” where more input means more output, which leads to greater input which leads to even greater output, and so on and so on until the crystal breaks or the ship blows up or something generally unfavorable happens. This is approximately the experience of the people at Chernobyl, and is not recommended.
Tumblr media
So instead of having crystals feed themselves, you’d instead want them to be fed exclusively by an external source, like a battery or an entirely separate smaller crystal. So the initial crystal would feed larger ones, which would feed larger ones, and so on, each stage in the chain becoming more powerful, but always stable and dependent on some initial external input, so as to never go out of control.
Tumblr media
And now, I’m thinking it would be nice from an engineering perspective to have all the crystals together in one shielded location. And from a tactical perspective, it would be nice not to have a bunch of bulky, vulnerable, high-energy cables running around the entire vehicle. So, you would want as many crystal stages as possible in the places where the power is needed most. Namely, the engines.
Therefore, a big part of the engines would be made of armored shells to contain dozens of stacks of crystal beds. They would accept a small amount of power at the top, and multiply it internally to get enormous output at the bottom. Hence, ‘mega’ thruster. It multiplies input by a million.
Tumblr media
Boom.
Done.
Headcanon deployed.
So now the next time you’re watching some stupid show and think that something doesn’t make sense, pause to consider that maybe you’re just not using enough imagination, or else I will be with you in spirit to wrong-shame you.
(If you use your imagination and it still doesn’t make sense, then don’t worry. This means that the show is trash and you are right.)
Now go to bed.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 31, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
President Joe Biden today unveiled a new $2 trillion infrastructure proposal titled The American Jobs Plan. The statement introducing the plan notes that the United States currently ranks 13th in the world for the quality of our infrastructure, and that our public domestic investment as a share of the economy has fallen more than 40% since the 1960s. It calls attention to the fact that our roads and bridges are crumbling and that our electrical grid keeps failing. Too few people have access to affordable housing or to the Internet, while our infrastructure for caregiving—a vital part of our lives—is fragile, it says. It promises to unify and mobilize the country to address climate change and the rise of an autocratic China.
The plan calls for rebuilding American infrastructure and creating jobs. It provides $115 billion for repairing 10,000 bridges, modernizing 20,000 miles of highways and roads, and building a half a million chargers for electric vehicles. It provides $100 billion for installing broadband across the country and $100 billion to strengthen our electrical grid. It calls for replacing lead pipes in our water supply and provides $213 billion to build affordable housing.
It will raise wages and benefits for home care workers, secure U.S. supply chains, and train Americans for jobs in the new economy. It will protect workers’ right to organize and bargain collectively, and it will make sure that American goods are shipped on vessels under a U.S. flag, with crews from the U.S.
The plan addresses climate change and persistent racial injustice. It invests in technology to address the climate crisis and put the U.S. at the forefront of clean energy technology and clean energy jobs. It will invest in technology and innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and work to eliminate gaps in access to innovation grants to communities of color and rural communities.
To pay for the investment in the country, Biden is proposing an accompanying tax plan, the Made in America Tax Plan, to raise taxes on corporations. If this measure passes, it will pay for the American Jobs Plan in 15 years, and will reduce deficits from then on. Biden wants to roll back former president Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which slashed corporate taxes. He proposes to set the corporate tax rate at 28%, from its current rate of 21%-- still nowhere near the 35% tax rate before the 2017 tax cuts. He also plans to discourage offshoring of corporations and to enact a minimum tax on a corporation’s “book income” (what they advertise to their investors while telling the government they made far less), and to get rid of subsidies for fossil fuels.
Biden is making a historic gamble that Americans are tired of the past forty years of austerity and are instead eager for the government to invest in America again. He is also pushing back on the argument that tax cuts are good for the economy. “This is not a plan that tinkers around the edges,” he said yesterday as he introduced it at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Pittsburgh Training Center. “It is a once in a generation investment in America unlike anything we've done since we built the interstate highway system and the space race decades ago.”
Biden’s invocation of the interstate highway system, begun under Republican President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956, was not frivolous. Eisenhower had traveled from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco in 1919 with 72 military vehicles and about 280 officers and enlisted men as part of an army convoy designed to show far-flung communities the military’s new machinery. When the nation’s roads proved so bad that the convoy never averaged more than 10 miles per hour, the journey also illustrated the need for new national roads.
Entering the White House in 1953, Eisenhower three years later pushed through the $25 billion Federal-Aid Highway Act to build 41,000 miles of road and tie the nation together. The act jump-started the economy not only by providing jobs, but also by creating new markets for new motels, diners, gas stations, and towns along the new routes. The highways were a symbol of what investing in the nation could do for its citizens.
And invest they did. The top marginal income tax rate during the Eisenhower administration, for incomes over $200,000, was 91%. (Two hundred thousand dollars in 1956 is about $2 million today.) As the country rebuilt itself and helped to rebuild Europe after WWII, the economy boomed. Between 1945 and 1960, the nation’s gross national product jumped 250% from $200 billion to $500 billion. American incomes doubled between 1945 and 1970.
But men opposed to government regulation and taxation insisted that the postwar system was replacing America’s capitalist economy with socialism. Then the economic stagnation of the 1970s, combined with runaway inflation that thrust people into higher tax brackets without increasing their real buying power, helped to push the idea that tax cuts would feed economic investment. Since 1981, when President Ronald Reagan took office, the idea that tax cuts would bolster economic growth was the orthodoxy that drove politics, and they became the go-to Republican plan for economic growth.
Experience has proven that tax cuts do not spur growth. Instead, money has moved upward dramatically in the past forty years. The upward thrust of wealth has been especially notable during the pandemic, when U.S. billionaires added more than $1 trillion to their wealth even as the U.S. suffered the sharpest rise in its poverty rate in more than 50 years. By January 2021, the combined fortune of the 660 billionaires in the U.S. had climbed to $4.1 trillion, an increase of more than 38% since the beginning of the pandemic. The fortunes of the wealthiest 15 billionaires increased more than 58%.
For their part, Republican lawmakers are blasting Biden’s infrastructure plan as anti-business, a tax-and-spend plan. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, “It’s called infrastructure, but inside the Trojan horse is going to be more borrowed money and massive tax increases on all the productive parts of our economy.” Former president Trump said: “If this monstrosity is allowed to pass, the result will be more Americans out of work, more families shattered, more factories abandoned, more industries wrecked, and more Main Streets boarded up and closed down.”
And yet, it is hard to see their objections as anything but the usual pattern of Republican tax cuts that benefit the very wealthy followed by complaints that the Democrats who want to invest in society are racking up deficits. Even before the pandemic, when the economy was strong, Republicans under Trump took on massive debt. In 2017, the national debt was $14.7 trillion; the Congressional Budget Office projected that Trump’s spending and tax cuts even before the pandemic spending would add an extra $10 trillion by 2025.
The idea of infrastructure spending is popular with Republicans: it enticed the former president over his four years, leading two years ago to a statement from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and then-Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that they and Trump had agreed on a $2 trillion package with details forthcoming. Yesterday, Representative Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) took to Twitter to celebrate money coming to his state from the American Rescue Plan, appearing to take credit for a law he—and all other Republicans—voted against.
And polls say that government investment in our country, paid for with taxes on top earners, is popular: a new Morning Consult/Politico poll says that by a two-to-one margin voters prefer a $3 trillion infrastructure bill that includes tax hikes on those who make more than $400,000 a year and corporations to one that does not have those tax hikes.
Facing Republican obstruction, Biden is also facing complaints from the Congressional Progressive Caucus whose members object that the package doesn’t adequately address climate change. But Biden seems to be betting that Americans of all political stripes will rally to a new politics that invests in the country, including the rural areas that now often vote Republican. Pelosi called the plan “a visionary, once-in-a-century investment in the American people and in America’s future.”

NOVELLA-LENGTH FICS: 25 to 50K w. (Aug 2019)
Among the Secret Things by Kate_Lear for coloredink (E, 26,073 w., 14 Ch. || Angst, Drama, Amnesia) – Sherlock would be the last person to describe himself as given to flights of fancy, but at the look on Lestrade’s face he could swear that something inside him curls up and dies. Part 1 of Among the Secret Things
Dropping the Act by jadztone (T, 27,258 w., 10 Ch. || Parentlock, Fake Relationship, Mary’s Family, Post-S4, Cuddling & Snuggling, Bed Sharing, Pining, Christmas) – Sherlock and John are quite happy living together with Rosie in Baker St. They might be even happier if they didn’t act towards each other like their love is only platonic. Mycroft brings troubling news in the form of Mary’s parents wanting to know just what their grandchild’s home life is like. The boys decide to spend Christmas pretending like they are in love in order to seem more like a "normal" family. It's easy enough to pretend when all you're doing is dropping the act.
And A Doctor by StillWaters1 (T, 27,393 w., 6 Ch. || Friendship, Doctor John, Whump, Soldier / Doctor Dichotomy, Five and One) – It was only when people actually saw John working as a physician that they began to understand: that it wasn't just about bullets and IEDs and trauma care under fire. That "doctor" actually covered a pretty wide field. And that John was bloody good at covering ground. 5 times Dr. Watson treated others and 1 time he treated himself.
Don't Leave Anything Out by lookupkate (E, 27,422 w., 24 Ch. || Letters / Epistolary, Misunderstandings, Angst, Happy Ending, Alternate Meeting, Sherlock in Love, Pining Sherlock) – The first letter John writes home from Afghanistan is meant to go to a woman he went on only one date with. How it ends up in Sherlock's hands is completely innocent. What happens next is not. What do you do when you find out the person you're in love with has been lying about something as monumental as who they are? What do you do when you're the one who lied? How on earth do you put the pieces back together?
Vena Cava by SilentAuror (E, 27,452, 1 Ch. || H/C, Infidelity, Angst, HLV Fix-It, Romance) – Sherlock has been shot in the chest; John has been shot in the heart. Though everything is broken, they do their best to heal the wounds that Mary left on them both.
Trust Me, Trust Nobody by BlueMoonOnTheRise (T, 27,751 w., 10 Ch. || Kidnapping, Friendship / No Slash, Adventure, Trust Issues) – Whatever he told Mycroft, John trusted Sherlock almost instantly. When a new case shows up - smattered with the usual thrill of danger, death and cool logic - such trust ends up pushed to its very limits...
26 Pieces by Lanning (E, 28,236 w., 1 Ch. || H/C, Torture, First Time, Happy Ending, Schmoop) – Mycroft gives Sherlock the apparently simple task of solving a puzzle box containing a stolen microchip. It isn't simple.
Silhouettes by allonsys_girl (E, 28,585 w., 7 Ch. || Canon Compliant, POV John, Heavy Drinking, Sad/Depressed John, Grief/Mourning, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Reunion, Foot Jobs, Blow Jobs, Infidelity, Cheating, Drug Use/Abuse, Anal, Switchlock, Rimming, Parentlock) – Sherlock and John find comfort in each other's arms, but as ever with these two, it's not your typical relationship. It's fluffy at the beginning, gets deeply angsty in the middle, gets porny at the end.
Hellfire by testosterone_tea (E, 28,596 w., 9 Ch. || Fantasy / Magic / Mages / Elementals AU || Mage Sherlock, Elemental John, Developing Relationship, Torture, Powerful / BAMF John, POV Alternating, Dark / Blood Magic, UST, First Kiss) – Sherlock is a Mage that gets involved with a case involving Dark Summoning rituals, leading him to John Watson, a man with Berserker blood. The only thing is, Berserkers have been extinct for centuries. And of course, nothing involving Mycroft and his interfering ways is ever simple. This time, even Sherlock may have bitten off more than he can chew.
An Experiment in Apathy Series by belovedmuerto (G to E, 28,701 w. across 13 stories || Empath John, Empath-by-Proxy Sherlock, Epic Bromance Becomes Romance, Angst, Nightmares, Experiments, Trauma, Dreams) – "No man is an island, John. You less so than most." A sequel to the EiE Series, wherein John and Sherlock explore their relationship.
To be Loved by You by TwisterMelody (M, 28,775 w., 1 Ch. || Angst, H/C, Friends to Lovers, Post-HLV, Infidelity, Character Death) – Too many times they had confessed themselves in the darkness, leaving it there, never to speak of it again.  But this is different.  This love deserves the light of day.

It’s been running forever, and it’s worth thousands of pounds. It’s all fun and games, hahaha, until they find out Lestrade is in dire financial straits (dog needs emergency surgery, he’s putting his kid through gymnastics training, I don’t know, something), and they decide to fake a relationship to win the pool for him. Sherlock figures out the day and way that Lestrade thinks it’s going to happen, and they act it out. It’s all for a good cause, fake relationship style, until it’s not." Part 1 of The Pool

If John Watson were to put what he really wanted in list form, to live in a land somewhere beyond ‘almosts' now that Sherlock Holmes has indeed returned to him, he would never be able to look his flatmate in the eye ever again.

See, Clara is not only American (and wealthy to boot), she's also best friends with John’s ex-fiancée. Whom she's placed in the wedding party. As Maid of Honor. And John just happens to be Best Man. Bloody brilliant.

I think this all the way back to my Exit, planning where I’ll wait and what I’ll say when I see him. Scheming on how to get his name. It’s only once I reach the Exit Point door that I realize two hours and forty-five minutes have passed, and I realize that this won’t be the last time I Visit. It won’t be the last time at all.

런닝맨 방탄 - Running Man Bangtan
PART TWO OUT! READ IT HERE
A/N This is an AU where the reader, as well as the seven members of BTS, are on the popular South Korean show Running Man. Running Man is a little similar to Run BTS, but with much longer episodes and more elaborate games and tasks. If you want to get an idea of what Running Man is like, all their episodes are free to watch on Viki.
This is part 1, it’s just under ten thousand words, so I’m going to have this one-shot be in two parts. I’ve got all the storyboarding complete for the second half, it just needs to be written out. I’m also considering a sequel with smut, probably a threesome. I know who it’ll be with but I don’t want to spoil the ending of this one-shot, so I’ll put an A/N at the end of the second part that will give more details.
The eight of you were lined up in front of a production team, huddling together slightly against the sharp bite of the brisk autumn breeze. It was that time of the week where you began a new episode of your show, and as always, there was a hum of anticipation in the air. It was the 100th episode of Running Man, and coincidentally also your 50th episode as the eight member of the show. After almost a year of shooting, producers had decided a female amongst all that testosterone would make for some interesting television, and sure enough the ratings had skyrocketed after that.
The fans had been voting on a poll on social media for the theme of this anniversary episode, and the eight of you had yet to find out the result. You were secretly hoping for the relaxing vacation option, but the lack of suitcases and your current location in a public park made it seem unlikely. Besides, fans of the show certainly seemed to enjoy watching the eight of you suffer.
You were currently near the middle of the line-up, waiting patiently and rubbing your reddened nose as the loyal crew dutifully set up all the cameras and fiddled with sound systems. To your left was Yoongi, fidgety as he always was before shooting, and to your right, the ever-energetic Hoseok, bouncing back and forth as he fought to stay warm.
The red hoodies you all had to wear looked a lot more insulated than they were, as by the end of each shooting day you were sure to work up a sweat. Unfortunately it meant the stirring of wind went straight to your skin, and it was clear all of the members were feeling the chill.
“Alright,” announced Producer Lee, breaking the focussed silence, “we’re all clear to begin.”
The eight of you lit up like Christmas trees, eager to finally get going.
The gesturing of a finger and a blinking red light were the familiar signal that the cameras were rolling, and Producer Lee switched into his more authorial announcer’s tone. “This is Running Man’s 100th episode, and Y/n’s 50th episode as a member.” He broke off to let you all react to this, and you feel your cheeks heat up as the members give a whoop, Hoseok leaning over to give your shoulders a squeeze. Lee continues. “The fans have decided how they want you to celebrate this occasion. The theme for today’s episode is…”
As if rehearsed, you turn in unison to the poster board that has been set up behind you with a paper sheet covering it. One of the crew members walks up to it and strips away the cover, revealing the title for this episode. 8 Missions in 8 Hours.
The eight of you ooh and aah at the title, the excited energy rising. Episodes tended to get more views when they were objective-based, and this seemed like it would probably be a multiple-part episode as well.
Lee waits for the group to settle again before he explains. “The eight of you have eight hours to complete 8 different missions. If you complete all eight missions within the given time, you will be given a reward. However, one of you is a spy,” he breaks off for the inevitable gasping and accusing looks passed back and forth among the members, “and will try and prevent the team from completing all the missions. If the spy wins, all members but them have to do a penalty. If you manage to complete the missions in time and work out who the spy is, the spy will miss out on the reward and do the penalty instead. You will only be given the instructions for the next mission once you have completed your current one. Here are the instructions for the first mission,” he finishes, holding out a card.
Jimin rushes forward to take it from him and reads it aloud. “In the fountain behind you are 50 coins with a question mark and a number on them. Each member has to find one and bring it to the microphone and answer a question about that episode. Only one member can look for a coin at a time.”
While the group process the rules, you turn around and stare at the fountain. It’s a wishing fountain, filled with probably several hundred coins of different currencies. This will take forever if you can only do it one at a time. And surely the spy wouldn’t find it so hard to drag it out; they could just pretend to not know the questions, or not find any coins. As you pondered this, along with the rest of your team, still frozen in your line-up, Director Lee lets out a laugh, before changing back into his serious voice. “Your eight hours have already started.”
“Oh!” Jeongguk, ever the competitive one, runs and leaps into the fountain, not even bothering to take off his shoes and socks or roll up his jeans. You can tell he regrets it from the high-pitched yelp he lets out, water splashing up as he wades knee-deep in the water.
“Is it cold?” You tease him. “Too cold for little Jeonggukie?”
He begins to retort with a piercing glare but Jimin is shouting at him to start looking.
Energy begins high as you all crowd around the fountain and cheer him on as he desperately rakes through the layers of coins, his grey jeans almost black with water and his red hoodie covered in splatters, and it takes him less than two minutes to find a coin, stamped with the number 17 on it, and leap out of the fountain over to the microphone, still panting.
A crew member with a book of questions by episode number reads one off. “In Episode 17, which dish did Taehyung have to cook for the members after losing a penalty?”
Jeongguk frowns, slowing his heaving chest as he considers.
You think back to it. Suddenly it comes to you. “Producer Lee, can we help other members answer?”
He shakes his head, but while Jeongguk is searching his memory, Taehyung gives you a disbelieving stare. “You know the answer? You weren’t even on the show!”
“I still watched it,” you shoot back defensively. “Why, can’t you remember your own cooking?”
He narrows his eyes at you. “Wh- That isn’t the point! Were you a fangirl or something?”
Yoongi, currently the only one not hyped up by the action, calmly drawls a response. “Do you really think she would apply to be on the show if she didn’t even like it?”
Tae is rendered speechless, and you turn to Yoongi, partway across the fountain from you. “Thank you, oppa.”
At this point Jeongguk has given up and gone back to looking in the fountain for a different-numbered coin. Jeongguk, arguing desperately with Tae after he gave up on the question, was making enough racket that Yoongi has to make his way around the fountain in order to keep talking. He faces away from the action and leans against the fountain edge. “So which one of us is your favorite, then?”
Although most of the cameras are focussed on the action in front of you, both your and Yoongi’s cameramen are dutifully sitting a few feet away with their cameras trained on you both. “I don’t think any of you are particularly impressive,” you jibe.
His remark dies on his lips as Jeongguk lets out a hoot, rushes over to the microphone and correctly answers his second question. He groans in relief and yells out for someone else to go.
You take your chance to avoid the awkward, too-close-to-flirting conversation and pull yourself over the edge and into the freezing water.
Too late, you realise you made the exact same mistake Jeongguk did by not taking off your shoes and socks first. Luckily you’re wearing a pair of gym shorts, so you don’t have to worry about soggy pants, but the squelching of water between your toes is very uncomfortable.
Once you’ve gotten over the initial shock of the water, and the bubbles stirred up by your entry dissipate, you realise how tough this task really is. It feels like there are about a million coins and none in your immediate scan have a question mark.
Instead of adopting Jeongguk’s technique of desperate thrashing, you kneel upright, avoiding getting the seat of your shorts wet, and sift through a handful at a time. You try and block out the raucous chatter around you as your team members cheer you on, some a little more aggressively than others. Finally, a coin with a question mark comes up.
Leaping out of the fountain, you waddle over to the microphone stand in your waterlogged sneakers. Flipping the coin over, you shout out the number: 84.
The same crew member from before hurriedly flips through the book to find the appropriate question. “In episode 84, which member cheated in the final game by spending his own money?”
Your head tilts back in thought. Episode 84 was only a couple months ago, and around that time there weren’t that many episodes where money played a key role. You think back to when the producers announced a member from the other team in a four-against-four challenge had spent their cash instead of the money given to them. “Namjoon?” You guess your answer, but the pleasant jingle that sounds out lets you know you’ve got it right.
“See, Jeongguk!” Jin exclaims. “It’s not that hard! Why did you take so long?”
“You go next, then!” Jeongguk shouts in mock outrage.
Jin kicks off his shoes and socks and hitches up his sweatpants and jumps in. Unfortunately for him, he has even worse luck than Jeongguk. While he finds the coins fast enough - 4, 77, 94, 18 - all the questions leave him dumbfounded.
Jeongguk, who would find it extremely validating were you not on a time constraint, starts kicking at him each time he runs back defeated. “Yah, hyung! Do you really not know any of the questions? It’s suspicious that you’re so bad!”
You laugh as many of the others agree. “It’s just that all of the questions are about things you guys did!” Jin defends himself in a dragged out whine.
“Oppa only pays attention to himself,” you tease, “he just needs to get a question that says, ‘What did Jin eat for breakfast in episode 65?’ and we’ll be fine!”
“Exactly!” Jin affirms, half-distracted by his constant fossicking, before pausing, hunched over in the water. “Wait, hey! No!”
Yoongi returns to your side, resting his elbows on the edge as you take your place around the fountain. The staff had brought dry changes of clothing for you all, as well as towels, but luckily all you needed was to warm up your feet and put on some dry socks and sneakers, so you kick off your wet footwear and wrap up your bare feet, red with the cold.
Yoongi’s quiet, but you know he’s just enjoying the camaraderie of the team. Both of you, when sharing late-night chats or quick moments between shoots, had talked about how wonderful it was to feel like you were spending every day with these people who felt like family. You tuck your arm around his and lean onto the edge of the fountain beside him. You are quite happy to sit and watch the antics of your friends, but Yoongi breaks the silence.
“You better not be sucking up to me if you’re the spy,” he drawls, lip quirking in a suppressed smile. As tough as he likes to play, Yoongi has always been a sucker for snuggling.
“If I was the spy, I certainly wouldn’t tell you,” you counter.
You feel his shoulder shrug under the weight of your head. “That sounds like something a spy would say.”
“Well, then, what would a person who wasn’t a spy say? I’ll just say that.”
He goes quiet for a moment. “That’s also something a spy would say.”
You scoff.
Once Jin finally receives a question about himself (Where did Jin and Jeongguk go for their reward in episode 9?) the rest of the members get done pretty quickly. It’s been almost thirty minutes because of the two slowpokes, but finally there are only two left: Namjoon, currently running circles inside the fountain like a manic, and Jimin.
You jolt up away from Yoongi, accidentally elbowing him in the side as you do it, when Namjoon slips on a bit of algae on the bottom. Although the fountain’s water level only goes up to his knees, when he slips, he goes down.
The enormous splash causes a racket amongst the group. Jin, Hobi and Jeongguk laughing hysterically when Namjoon finally sits up, clothes drenched, hair dripping down his face.
There’s a lull as he clenches his eyes shut and squeezes his lips together in a tense smile - did he hurt himself when he fell? - and a sudden burst of joyous cheer when he raises a single stamped coin. He hauls himself out of the water, sloshing over the side and onto the grass, and heaves himself to the microphone. It’s a question from an episode only two weeks ago, and he answers immediately.
Jimin, already barefoot, makes a show of ripping off his hoodie before leaping into the water in a plain white shirt and jean shorts, but your attention has been caught by the shivering Namjoon.
Being so late in the game, he doesn’t have a change to get fully changed, so you wave him over to you, pulling up a chair so he can sit while you dry off his hair with a fresh towel. He’s taken off his heavily drenched hoodie, and another towel is clutched tightly around his shoulders.
“Ah, oppa, you should be more careful,” you chastise. He bows his head and apologises but judging by the way Yoongi shakes his head with a bemused grin, Namjoon definitely didn’t take your warning to heart.
You muss up his hair with the towel, tugging his head back and forth a little with it, determined to make sure he doesn’t catch a cold. The relatively short time it takes Jimin to find a coin with a question he can answer is spent drying off Joonie’s hair, periodically carding your fingers through it to break up any knots.
Once victory for your first mission is achieved, the lot of you crowd around the front of the fountain again and await the results. Producer Lee tells you all that it took you 42 minutes to complete the first challenge, and therefore you have seven hours and 18 minutes left.
Still shivering a little, you record for a while longer, throwing accusations back and forth about who the spy is, and why the slowest members took so long, before they cut the camera feeds.
Now comes the movie magic, or, you suppose, television magic. The eight of you are driven back to the dorm, take your time having hot showers and getting something to eat, putting on fresh, dry versions of the same clothes, and are driven back to the same spot again, where the timer is turned on again. Very rarely do you ever film an episode without breaking various times, as most of the things you did involved getting messy or dirty at one point or another. An associate producer lines you up in the order you were in before, and a stylist concurs with the camera crew to make your your hair styles and clothes look the same as they did before you paused shooting.
When shooting resumes, it’s just to announce that the second mission takes place at another location, and so you bundle into the van, already outfitted with cameras at every angle, taking off for the second stage.
In the very back row are Yoongi, Taehyung and Jeongguk; you’re sat in the middle of the second row with Hoseok and Jin on either side of you and Namjoon and Jimin are in the row behind the driver’s seat.
Most of the group are on their phones or taking quick naps. Generally when the place you had to go was more than ten minutes away, you would chill out for the start and make an effort for some good content in the last few minutes. The cameras would stay on the whole time, as was usual, but unless anything happened, they’d just delete the footage.
You let out a yawn, wriggling around in your seat to lean your back into Hoseok’s side. Automatically, his right arm snakes around you and links back up with his left, forming a secure hold to keep you from rolling around with the movement of the car.
In many ways, the Running Man cast really were like a family. You would even go so far as to say you were closer than that. You had worked with the same seven men five days a week for two weeks shy of a year now. Shooting days were always fun, but so were the ones were you all sat around a boardroom, brainstorming with Producer Lee about what future episodes you could do, which special guests you could invite on for cameos. When the cameras were off and you were allowed to act completely naturally with the men who were like your brothers. Well, maybe the relationships you had with some of them weren’t really sibling-like relationships, but that was just a side effect of the extremely close quarters you held.
Speaking of close quarters, just as you were drifting off in the secure warmth of Hoseok’s embrace, you feel a steady prod on your cheek.
“Jin-ah!”
“Why are you sleeping?” He whines.
“I’m dreaming of your beautiful face, oppa.”
You try your best not to crack a grin when you hear his bitter ‘humph’. “But my beautiful face is right here, Y/n. Why don’t you open your eyes and look at it now?”
“Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
Giving up in a dramatic sigh of defeat, you feel the car seat shift as he turns around in his seat to start talking to someone else instead. The weight of Hoseok’s chin comes down to rest on the top of your head, and you hum in contentment.
All of you are surprised when it’s a primary school that you arrive at. Producer Lee refuses to answer any questions as you’re all led into a classroom fully rigged with shooting gear.
It’s a pretty basic classroom as far as things go, and this kind of setting, with the blackboard and the school-desks, is a pretty common one for variety shows. You wonder what it is exactly you’ll be doing here.
Finally, everything is ready to go, and the crew start rolling. “Your second mission is to sit a high-school entrance exam. Students take this paper at the end of their first year in high school. They are given 90 minutes and must get 65% of the questions right to pass. You can take as much time as you want to answer the questions, but you only get one chance to answer each question and you have to get 80% right to complete the mission.”
You each sound off various groans of disappointment at having to sit an exam, except for Namjoon, who remains enthusiastic with a chance to show off his smarts.
As you each get into your positions at the desks, Producer Lee goes on to explain that there are 50 questions, and you need to get 40 right to get the passing grade.
The desks you are placed at are very fitting with your personalities, as the eager Namjoon as well as Taehyung and Jimin are up the front, and you, Hoseok and Jeongguk are sat in the back row. Yoongi and Jin sit in the middle, both looking rather put out by this challenge.
“First question:” Producer Lee announces, “what are the stages of the water cycle?”
You let out a groan and let your head flop on the table. You weren’t going to be much help with this mission.
An hour and fifteen minutes later, you only have three questions left. Unfortunately for the team, you’ve already got 10 questions wrong, and another would mean failing the mission.
Jeongguk’s competitiveness has outplayed his disdain at the mission format, and although he hasn’t answered a single question thus far, his butt is hovering ten centimetres out of his seat as he awaits the third-to-last question.
“Question 48: if a triangle has a length of 12 centimetres and a height of 5 centimetres, how long is the hypotenuse?”
You stare hopelessly into the camera closest to you, expressionless. What kind of genius children they were raising here, you didn’t know.
Taehyung gestures in the air, trying to visualise it. The others, assuming he must know the answer, wait with bated breath. He nods slowly. “…It’s gotta be more than 12 centimetres.”
“Wh- Okay. Okay, it’s longer than 12 centimetres. What’s the formula?”
Taehyung stares blankly at Jimin, who’s jumped up from his seat to start scratching out a diagram on the board. Jimin’s drawing is of a wobbly triangle, which although is marked with 12, 5, and ? respectively, has sides of roughly the same length.
You let out a bark of laughter. “Jimin, that’s not in proportion at all!”
“Okay, Albert Einstein,” he shoots back, “you tell us the answer, then.”
“I’m as bad at math as you apparently are at art, buddy.”
“Unnie!” He whines. “I’m trying my best!”
He turns towards you, puffing out his cheeks in a pout. His eyes glitter, and although you know he’s not so childish as to bring out the waterworks, your heart breaks anyway.
“Yeah, unnie!” Taehyung repeats. Soon all of your team are hounding you about being mean to Jimin, and the volume rises and rises until a quick ‘hey!’ causes everyone to pause.
Yoongi holds up a notepad of scribbles. “Thirteen centimetres?” The affirmative ding goes off and he smiles proudly to himself, unaware that the attack on you was about to be shifted.
“Wait a minute,” Hoseok begins, “you knew how to work it out that whole time?”
“Yeah.”
“And you just let us bumble around like idiots while you solved it for yourself?”
“…Well, it doesn’t matter who gets the answer, we just need to get these next two right.” Yoongi blinks innocently at the rest of you.
Hoseok stares at him incredulously. “What if one of us had given up and said a random number as a guess?”
You see your chance to get back at Yoongi for accusing you earlier. “We wasted our time and potentially could’ve failed the mission because you didn’t tell us. That seems like something a spy would do.” Throwing his words back at him, you wiggle your eyebrows at his exasperated glare.
“Uh, guys?” Jeongguk ventures. “We still have two questions to answer before we complete the mission. Shouldn’t we try and solve these two as fast as we can to make up for this time spent arguing?”
Producer Lee decides it’s a good time to speak up. “Question 49: what is the planet third closest to the Sun?”
“Earth!” Namjoon calls out, and you all breathe a sigh of relief when you get the question right, and can move on so quickly.
“Finally, question 50: What year did the Korean War begin?”
You were a bit of a history buff when you were in school, and so you tell the rest of the team that you’re pretty sure it’s 1950.
“Are you sure, Y/n?” Hoseok swivels in his chair to face you. “I thought it was 1948.”
You frown. Was it 1948? You would hate to be the one who made the team fail the mission. Just as you were about to concede to Hoseok, Jin speaks up.
“No, Y/n’s right, I think.” A couple of other members agree with him, and so you submit 1950 as your answer. It’s correct, and after an hour and 22 minutes, you’ve completed your second mission.
“You now have 5 hours and 34 minutes left to complete six more missions.” You scrunch your face up in worry. You had roughly an hour per mission, so the team was already beginning to fall behind. “Your third mission also takes place in this classroom. Each of you has to spin round in a circle ten times before picking up a bowl of water,” he gestures off-camera to the row of plastic bowls that were being set up on the front desk, “and trying to fill a jug that another player is holding. The combined volume of the water must exceed one litre for you to succeed in this mission. However,” he trails off dramatically, “the individual that contributes the most water gets a hint about the identity of the spy.”
And just like that, the third mission is a-go. Jeongguk, eager to impress after his lack of help in the last round, goes first. He twirls around with his finger to his nose, and after a little stumbling manages to tip in 180mL.
Hoseok stands up next. “I can do better than that any day!” Hoseok, who was a street dancer before starting the show, has excellent balance. Unfortunately for him, he also has terrible aim, and misses the bowl almost completely.
“35mL,” a crew member announces.
“Yah, Hoseok must be the spy to do that badly,” Jimin insists as Jin begins taking his turn.
“Am not!”
“Well, then, why would you tell us you’re great at something and do terribly?”
Hoseok, not responding so well to the ribbing, throws his hands up in the air in emphasis. “It’s not me, seriously! Look, Jin did a rubbish job, too!”
“65mL,” Jin declares matter-of-factly. “I did twice as good as you, Hoseok.”
“We still need…720mL,” Namjoon calculates, and heaves a big sigh as he steps up and begins twirling round in front of the desk. He slows to a wobbly halt when you all call out the tenth turn, and stumbles towards the bowl.
Knowing how clumsy Namjoon can be at the best of times, you all shuffle back a little to avoid getting splashed, but amazingly, almost all of it sloshes into the bowl. He collapses into a chair, and lets out a satisfied sigh when the water level is read off at 210mL.
“Woah, hyung, that’s amazing!” Jimin enthuses. “We can do this, guys!”
You have four people still to go, and just over half a litre left to pour in. It’s your turn, so you hook one arm around the other, finger on your nose, and close your eyes while spinning as you listen as the guys chant a count to ten.
On ten, you are surprised just how dizzy you are, and suddenly it doesn’t seem so easy to grab the bowl off the table. With the ground lurching beneath you and your knees knocking together, you fall forward a couple steps until you lean onto the table, using the solid object as support when you lift the bowl.
In your fuzzy-minded state, you lift up the bowl, feeling the water sloshing down your sleeves, and tip it in the general direction of the clear plastic measuring jug at the far end of the table.
It’s impossible to see anything when your surroundings are jerking back and forth. Totally unaware of how well (or poorly) you did, you lose your balance leaning towards the cups and your elbow slips off the side of the table, falling ungracefully onto the floor.
Strong hands help you sit up and you lean against the front wall of the classroom, blinking slowly. “How much did I get?”
Hoseok holds up a jug with about two centimetres of water in the bottom and gives you an unimpressed glare. “How come when I do a bad job, it’s all, ‘oh, Hobi, you’re the spy’ but when Y/n does even worse than I did, you guys are fawning over her, making sure she’s okay?”
“I did even worse than you?” You ask incredulously. “Man, I’m sorry guys.”
“Wait, wait!” Taehyung, who had been quietly observing thus far, runs over to the line of jugs. “Some of the water splashed into another jug, see!”
You look up in hope. Tae’s right; you may have all but missed your jug, but Namjoon’s water level has raised by quite a bit.
Producer Lee quickly confers with the team. “Because you need a combined score to win, it will count. However, it won’t be counted for either of your individual scores.” You nod, satisfied.
Next up is Jimin, who gives an average performance of 80mL.
Taehyung goes second-to-last and manages 200mL. He’s clearly proud, but slightly miffed he didn’t get more than Namjoon. When they read off the amount, he clenches his eyes together and pinches the bridge of his nose.
When Yoongi walks up to finish off the game, the producers remind you all you still need 180mL to complete the challenge. You all circle around Yoongi in nervous anticipation as he spins, hunched into a low crouch.
Jeongguk and Jimin start a chant of “hyung, hyung, hyung!” as he breaks out into a wonky dash towards the table. With amazingly steady hands, he grabs onto the bowl and slowly tips it over into the final jug on the end of the desk.
Barely spilling anything, Yoongi pours out the last of the water and then gives the camera a smug nod, holding out his arms with a cocky grin on his face.
Jeongguk rushes forward to read off the water level. “No way, hyung, you got 230mL!”
Your expressions are a mix of stunned and impressed, and the producer announces that you’ve completed the third mission, with Yoongi, of course, being the one who gets the hint.
“Here is your hint. You may choose to show it to any of the other players or keep it to yourself. There will be two more hints throughout your remaining five missions.”
You hold your breath as Yoongi walks forward, opens the envelope handed to him, and reads the hint. He looks up at each one of you with an inscrutable gaze.
“What’s the hint, oppa?” You ask.
He tilts the note away from the other members, showing it to the camera. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“Yeah, actually, I would!”
“I guess you shouldn’t have done such a terrible job in the mission then, Y/n.”
You narrow your eyes at him, ready to egg him on some more, but the producer cuts you off. “For your next mission, we’ll be heading to a restaurant. You currently have 5 hours and 8 minutes left to complete five more missions.”
Luckily, the restaurant wasn’t far away, and the car ride was spent placing bets on who the spy was, even though nobody except Yoongi had any idea. Once you arrived at the sleek, modern restaurant, you were led to an industrial kitchen in the back, and lined up behind a bench in the middle of the room.
On the bench were eight mini electric frypans, each with their own bottle of oil, fork, and a single egg. After you all got in place, they brought out bowls of bibimbap and placed one in front of each of you.
“Your fourth mission,” Producer Lee begins, “is to fry an egg and place it on the bowl of bibimbap without breaking the yolk. You can’t move the pan and all you can use to move the egg is a fork. To complete this mission, five of you have to succeed.”
This time, you were lined up in age order, and Jin and Yoongi both fried their eggs and deftly lifted them onto their bowls without breaking the yolk.
Hoseok and Namjoon were next in line, and just as expected, both fail. Hoseok almost gets there, you and Jeongguk cheering him on as the egg slowly cooks in the pan, but when he leaves it in too long the pan gets too hot and his yolk bubbles up and explodes. Namjoon, on the other hand, cracks his egg open with a little too much force and fails straight away.
You start heating up your pan, trying to go slow and steady. “Third time lucky,” you declare, pouring a small amount of oil into the pan before delicately cracking your egg. Once it cracks, you lift it up closer to you so you can wiggle your nails into the cracks and slowly pull it open. It cracks open faster than you were expecting, and everyone sucks in a unified gasp when the egg drops into the pan from your chest level.
Mouth open, you lean down to inspect the yolk, but it sits perfectly intact in the middle of the egg white, which is slowly turning opaque. The pressure is on, and you use the fork to flick at the edges to make sure it doesn’t get stuck. The real difficulty would be the transfer - making sure the egg didn’t flop off the narrow fork, or that the tines didn’t pierce through when you lifted it.
Once it was cooked (you admit, you left it to cook a little longer so the yolk wasn’t so runny) you held your breath and slowly manoeuvred the fork underneath the yolk. An idea strikes you, and you pause.
“What?” Jimin, standing to your left, hunches over to see if you’ve broken it already.
“We only need the yolk, right?” You confer with Director Lee, and after he nods you wiggle out the fork, only to cut away the egg whites from around the yolk, leaving a much smaller surface area for you to pick up.
Leaving the cut-off whites getting overcooked in the pan, you lift up the yolk easily and delicately set it down in the bowl.
“I told you, third time lucky!” You turn to your left at the three men left to go. “Come on, guys, we need two of you to succeed.”
Jimin, ever the perfectionist, manages to fry his egg and move it into the bowl without having to cut off the edges like you did, and the proud smile he sends you when you congratulate him warms you heart and sparks something off somewhere else, too. Trying not to blush, and avoiding his dreamy gaze, you lean over to Taehyung.
“You can do this Tae! Just don’t stress out too much and take it slow!”
The advice doesn’t help. He cooks the egg okay, but the second he puts his fork under to lift it, he pierces through and the yolk dribbles out around the pan, congealing and bubbling.
When you see his heartbroken expression, you quickly reach out and latch onto his hand, giving it a consoling squeeze. Tae was one of the members you first started spending time with, and really the only one of your three dongsaengs that you felt like an older sister to. The feelings you had for Jimin certainly weren’t family-friendly, and Jeongguk, although quite a bit younger than you, was your partner in crime more than anything else.
The crinkle between Taehyung’s eyebrows ease and his pout lifts.
“It’s okay, hyung, we weren’t really expecting you to win anyway,” Jeongguk teases, and starts oiling up his pan. “Let’s get it!”
The golden maknae is, unsurprisingly, very good at this challenge, and he stays calm under the mounting pressure.
The rest of you are tense, knowing that this is what this whole thing rides on, and to fail halfway through would be particularly embarrassing. Jin decides now is a good time to crack a joke and ease the atmosphere a little. “If the maknae became an author, what would he write?” He pauses for effect, nobody bothering to try and guess but just waiting for the punchline. “A Kookbook.”
Jeongguk has his egg draped across the fork, hovering over the bowl, but as he laughs the juddering of his shoulders causes a wobble, and just as he begins to lower it down into the bowl, the skin splits and the yolk runs off the fork.
Chaos erupts. Jeongguk begins complaining to Jin, Hoseok and Jimin are trying to convince the director to give them another chance, and the rest of you grumble and whine in disappointment.
“Okay, alright,” the director budges, and everyone goes silent in newfound hope, “we’ll let you pass this challenge if you sacrifice one player to the penalty, since you missed the goal by one.”
Namjoon ponders this. “So even if we win and get the reward, someone still has to pay the penalty?”
“Correct.”
Namjoon turns to the rest of the team. “If we lose now, we all do the penalty, but if we take the chance then maybe only one of us will. I say we take it.”
The rest of you agree, and you are allowed to move on to the fifth challenge.
Before any instructions are given, the director calls for a break, and the timer is paused while various staff members check cameras, clear up, and start preparing something else in place of the frying pans.
Your team is asked to leave while they set up, so you file out of the restaurant’s kitchen and take a seat at a round table in the middle of the room.
Tae’s cheered up since finding out that you were allowed to continue the game (that sweet boy always took losing so hard when he felt like he was letting others down) and he sits down with Jimin and Jeongguk on either side of him as they dig into the now-completed bibimbap from the previous challenge, slightly lukewarm but still apparently good enough to scoff like animals.
Namjoon and Jin sit together on Jimin’s other side, and you sit beside Jin, with Hoseok and then Yoongi filling up the table. Apart from the three youngest, the rest of you eat slowly, knowing it can take a while for the challenges to be set up depending on what’s needed, and there’s really nothing else to do while you wait.
You fall into conversation with Jin and Namjoon, unaware of Yoongi’s gaze on you as he ate quietly and tried to pay attention to Hoseok’s chatter.
“So, Y/n, how does fifty episodes feel?”
You wrinkle your nose at Jin. “Half as good as one hundred episodes, grandpa.”
He lets out a peal of laughter, leaning back in his seat with the force of it. You swear, you could read the weather forecast to Jin and he’d still see the humour in it.
“Anyway, Y/n,” Namjoon cuts in, “I was thinking a bunch of us should go out for drinks to celebrate. Hoseok knows this place downtown that has really great cocktails apparently, so maybe we can go on the Friday night.”
You push your mouthful of rice to one cheek as you reply, holding the back of your hand to your mouth to avoid any spillage. “Depends on what these rewards and penalties are, though. Didn’t they send you guys to Busan once?”
He shook his head. “When they do stuff like that, they have to warn us in advance that we might be needed on the weekend so that we don’t make plans. Besides, it gives us more incentive to survive four more missions. Hwaiting!”
You chuckle. “Did you see the timer before we left?”
Jin, breaking off a conversation with the youngest, leans back in. “Four hours twenty-something. I reckon they must have some long ones planned if we have so much time left.”
The thought of four and a half hours of filming to go triggers a yawn, and suddenly the contagious reaction is going around the table. Facing inwards again, you gradually all fall into one single conversation: drinks on Friday night.
You haven’t all been out drinking as a group before, as most of the time when you hang out it’s either all eight of you at home, or a few of you at a time going somewhere. It was difficult planning group activities outside of filming, and now that there was a good cause to celebrate, the group was buzzing with excitement.
“So, Hoseok, you must be quite the party animal if you know exactly where to go for the best cocktails,” you tease, elbowing him in the ribs. “And I never took you for a cocktails man.”
“Hey, don’t knock it til you try it! There’s one that’s got chocolate milk and vodka and you can’t even taste the alcohol in it. It’s like you’re drinking a milkshake one minute, and the next minute you’re fucked up, singing Christmas carols in April.” The group fell into laughter, sharing stories about things other members did while completely wasted, and the next half an hour passed in the blink of an eye.
Soon enough, you were back in the kitchen, gawking at the impressive set-up. The same frypan stations were on the long kitchen island, but this time each one was blocked off by a tall partition. They were high enough so that even the tallest member couldn’t peek over to the station beside him. Along with the electric frypans, there were a pair of tongs, a salt and pepper shaker, the same bottle of oil, a single sheet of instructions, and a slab of meat on a plate.
The order doesn’t matter this time, as you’ll be cooking at the same time, so the eight of you slot yourselves into the spaces. Although you were in a relatively large room, the feeling of being blocked in on both sides made your heart race with claustrophobia. It is a weird sensation, too, suddenly not being able to see any of your teammates, and you wish this challenge goes quickly.
The director starts rolling and reads out the instructions for the challenge. At least six of you had to cook a piece of steak to medium well-done exactly, using only the instructions given. Unfortunately for you, the instructions described how the meat should look when done, but not the time needed.
The challenge starts soon enough, and although the eight of you banter back and forth, you don’t remember ever being so uncomfortable and awkward during shooting before. Even being alone doing a penalty was preferential to being stuck in a narrow place, knowing your friends were there but not being able to really interact with them.
The challenge goes by in a miserable blur, and when it comes to taking down the partitions, revealing the doneness of each member’s steak, and getting a chef to come judge it, you are desperately trying to hide from the camera and your teammates how upset you are.
As the minutes go on, and whichever members are on either sides of you accidentally bump the placards closer and closer in on you, it’s all you can do to bite your lip and focus on the delicious smell of cooking meat.
There is a relief when they take away those awful white plastic sheets and you can see your friends again, but you can feel your eyes stinging, your stomach wobbling and your hands shaking. You clench them into fists and rest them on the bench, going uncharacteristically quiet for the judging section, letting the other team members do the most of the joking around for a while.
You force yourself to smile and relax a little when you manage to succeed in the challenge, with only Namjoon having the meat too overcooked, and keep up an airy persona while the director gives away a hint to the team, not that you hear a single word. It’s not until he calls out to cut that you let your chest sink down onto the table and you bury your face in your hands, letting your cheek press onto the cool marble bench-top.
You try and take a deep breath, but now that the pressure is off to smile for the cameras, you can’t help the tears that spring to your eyes, and the uneven pounding of your heart makes you feel sick.
A couple of the guys had started joking around once the cameras switched off, but once Yoongi, the first to notice that you aren’t okay, starts reassuring you in a hushed voice and trying to ease you into a standing position, the other six fall silent and crowd around you.
Your whole body is seized up with tension in an effort to stop from full-on sobbing, and Yoongi’s hands are gentle but insistent as they pull your arms away from your face and cradle your head into the solid, secure span of his chest. You can feel one arm around your back, thumb rubbing small circles into your shoulder, the other hand on the back of your head as he rocks back and forth slightly and shushes you.
You can hear the other members hovering around you, discussing what’s going on, voices dampened with concern, as well as Jimin’s voice in particular arguing with the director about why he would do a challenge like that.
When you had signed up for Running Man, you had filled out a form like all the other guys had, saying what things you were completely uncomfortable doing - things that were hard No’s if you were to be employed on the show. Being put into small spaces was one of those things. You didn’t blame the director at all; he had never made you go in a cave, or be stuck in a closet, or any of the things that sometimes other members would do. You were sure it never occurred to him that this would be a problem, and if you were honest, you weren’t really expecting it to be as bad as it was.
But still, it felt nice to have the comforting hold of Yoongi around you while Jimin defended your honour and the rest of them muttered sweet nothings to calm you down.
You took deep but shaky breaths, fingers clutching onto handfuls of Yoongi’s hoodie, and you felt the damp patch of fabric you were currently crying into.
After a couple minutes, he muttered to you in his natural Satoori, something he always avoided from using on-camera, that he was going to walk you outside for some fresh air.
You settled down enough to nod slowly, but made no effort to detach yourself from his grip as the manoeuvred the pair of you out the back entrance of the kitchen, sitting you down gently on a concrete step.
The harsh chill of the wind did wonders, and after a few more minutes of leaning into him and swaying back and forth, you had calmed down significantly. You sat up, but scooted your butt closer so you could pull him into a proper hug.
He rubbed your back and chuckled quietly as you thanked him.
The crew had finished setting up by the time the two of you came back inside, and your six other team members fell in to step with you, eager to make sure you were okay.
“We can call it a day if you need some more time, noona,” Jimin cooed, “Director Lee said it was fine.”
You sniffle resolutely and shake your head. “Just give me a couple minutes with the make-up team and we can move on. I’m okay, I promise.”
He gave you measured stare for a few moments, then relaxed his jaw and dropped his shoulders. “Okay, sounds good. We’ll go get ready, give you some space. No rush.”
You pat his shoulder reassuringly, and let him herd your teammates out of the kitchen. Yoongi looks like he wants to hang around, but you wave him on with a soft smile.
It doesn’t take long for the make-up stylists to work their magic with ice-packs under your eyes to bring down the slight swelling, and a fresh layer of concealer and foundation to make you look camera-ready again.
You take in a few deep breaths, willing the last of the wobbliness in your stomach to settle, and join the rest of the team.
They’re all lined up in a slight semicircle around a decorative fireplace in the dining area, and it warms your heart to see Taehyung, on the far left, create some distance between him and Jeongguk so you don’t have to stand on the outside.
Before you step into place, a thought comes to you. “Wait, I missed the hint for the spy. What was it?”
Jeongguk grins. “The spy is older than me but younger than Yoongi. A.K.A, it’s not me.”
“Nobody thought it was you anyway, Jeonggukie.” Tae pulls you into a side hug when you slip in between them, and his tight grip makes you think maybe he needs the support more than you do. He always takes it particularly hard when one of his hyungs or you get upset. You let yourself lean into him as the director reads out the instructions for the next challenge, hugging the arm he wrapped around you against your front.
“Your sixth mission is a game of wits. I’ll call out a number from zero to seven, and any of you can raise your hand, but it cannot be the number I called out. You need to succeed 5 out of 5 times to succeed.”
You figured the harsh stakes were to compensate for the fact that this challenge wouldn’t take a particularly long time. “At least this is kind of an impossible game to sabotage,” you muse. “Would be pretty obvious if someone suddenly changed their mind at the last minute to ruin the game.”
Jin narrowed his eyes at you from the other side of the semicircle. “Pretty interesting that you’re already thinking of ways the spy could screw this up, wouldn’t you say?”
“If I was the spy would I really point that out?”
A pause. “You win this round, punk.” He sighs dramatically, whipping his head to the side as if he’s in a k-drama. You chuckle at his antics, his attempt at cheering you up successful as always.
Without further warning, the director calls out a number and the game begins.
The first four rounds go well with everyone managing to avoid the number called out, and you only need one more to win.
“Three!”
Your hand shoots up, and as you all crane your necks to count the hands, you see Jimin, Jin, and Hoseok all have their hands up. A couple of you let out a cheer as victory is yours in less than five minutes, but Namjoon calls out. “Hey, wait, wasn’t Jimin just yawning?”
You all go silent, Jimin’s mouth open in a slight pout like he’s been caught redhanded. “What?”
“I saw you, you held up your hand to your face to yawn, and then when you saw there were only three you put it up higher.”
The room erupts into argument. “I still put my hand up, so it still counts!”
“Joonie, we had the win, why would you bring that up?”
“Yeah, hyung, you just made us fail the mission. Good going, buddy.”
To Namjoon’s credit, even if he was the spy and was making a deliberate attempt to sabotage the game, he has enough common sense to look guilty about the whole thing.
Eventually after conferring with (read: whining to) the director, Jimin finally accepts that his hand didn’t count, and that you had lost the challenge on the final round.
“Director Lee, can we just give up another member for a penalty like we did with the egg challenge?” Taehyung’s great idea has all the team buzzing, and the director reluctantly agrees.
“I say no matter the outcome, we put Namjoon on the penalty since he made us lose,” Hoseok declares.
“That is, if he isn’t already the spy,” you remind them, winking at Namjoon, thoroughly enjoying his hunched shoulders of defeat.
“Missions seven and eight,” Director Lee cuts in, “take place at the Running Man studio. You currently have three hours and forty eight minutes left to complete your final two challenges and guess the identity of the spy in order to claim your reward.”
The cameras cut after a few moments, and you all file your way out of the building and back into the company van.
This time, you get tucked into the back row against the window, with Tae remaining fast against your side, and Jeongguk on the seat beside him. Jin and Namjoon steal the second row, and in the middle sit Jimin and Hoseok with Yoongi on the middle seat between them.
You haven’t spend much time in this neighbourhood, but you can vaguely guess that you’re about twenty minutes drive from the studio, which is in the city centre of Seoul.
You and Tae let Jeongguk lead the conversation, as he seems to be the only one of you three in the back with any energy still left. “What do you reckon we’ll do in the studios? I mean, by the time we get there we’ll still have more than three hours, so they must be pretty long to still make it a reasonable time constraint. If we have loads of time it’s no fun at all.”
You hum half-heartedly, content to enjoy the steady flashing of scenery outside the window.
Hoseok swivels in his seat to face you. “Nah, I think whatever this next one is will be fine, and they’ll have one really big one as a grand finale. This must be, what, two or three episodes all up? Plus the reward and penalty follow-up, whenever that happens. But who do you reckon the spy is?”
Jeongguk wriggles his nose in thought. “Well, if Oscar the Grouch over here,” he kicks the back of Yoongi’s seat for emphasis, “would give us his hint, we’d know better. But we know it’s not me, it’s not him and it’s not Jin. Not gonna lie, Hoseok, the rest of you have kind of all done a terrible job so far, so it could be any one of you. Namjoon messed up that last challenge, Y/n did a horrendous job of the water jug one, you can’t fry an egg to save yourself, and Jimin just always looks suspicious.”
“Hey!”
Taehyung is pulled back into the conversation. “What about me?”
“You’re right,” Jeongguk says, “you’ve been a pretty decent team player so far. But anyway,” he digresses, “it doesn’t matter who’s been bad up until this point. Whoever the spy is will reveal themselves soon enough. Eventually they’ll get desperate enough and try something crazy to stop us from winning. So we just have to sit back and wait.”
Jimin, still upset about the earlier comment, fires back. “You get excluded by the hint and all of a sudden you’re an expert, huh?”
“We’ve been doing this for two years, hyung!” Jeongguk huffs and collapses dramatically back in his seat, staring obstinately out the window. Unfortunately for Jeongguk, it is only a few moments later that you arrive.
The studio that you’re heading to is actually part of a full floor with several rooms on it. The actual studio is where filming takes place, but there’s also a boardroom, an editing room, a break room, and the various small offices of all the head staff. When you weren’t filming or planning, a lot of your time was spent there anyway, playing video games in the break room with Jeongguk, chilling out with a hot cup of tea with Tae, sneaking into the director’s office out of work hours to leave little notes with Hoseok, because he liked the thought of Director Lee arriving in his office only to see a handwritten note with a smiley face and a wobbly heart. This was really your home away from home, and it was fitting that the end of the game would take place here.
In order to make things a little clearer for you all, Lee spent a couple of minutes while equipment was being checked to talk through the logistics of the rest of the game. Both challenges remaining were in the studio, and then you’d take a break for an hour or so while the crew ran over the footage to make sure there was nothing that needed reshooting, before coming back together to finish off voting out the spy, and revealing the rewards and penalties for the game.
It was pretty common practice, you had discovered, to go back to a location later in the day or the week to redo bits and pieces. Sometimes somebody blocked a shot, or the wind ruined the audio, or mishaps occurred in the editing room. It always sucked to try and mimic what you did earlier, knowing that the sincerity of your responses wouldn’t be there. You didn’t think the fans noticed or cared, but for you it was a real downside of the job. Luckily enough, all the footage was fine, and since the studio equipment was always up, it never needed any double-checking. So, it was time to start.
The penultimate challenge was another short one, a classic game of Chinese whispers with headphones on, where instead of sharing sentences, you had to pass a classic dance move down the line, and have the final person guess the song it was from.
All of you managed to do well enough, and another victory was secured in fifteen minutes. This was the round, however, that you would receive the final hint on the identity of the spy.
“Hint number three,” Director Lee announced, “is that the spy used to dance professionally before joining the show.”
You scrunched your nose. Hoseok was a street dancer for several years before joining the variety show and Jimin went to a dance school and performed in a few shows held at his local theatre. None of the other guys had any experience in dancing.
You were, however, also a dancer before you came on. In fact, less than a year and a half ago you had been a member of your local dance academy, teaching part-time.
And the rest of the team knew it.
One by one, they craned their heads to look at you accusingly. You glare back at them. “We’re still on the clock, idiots. Let’s go!”

UK Road Trip Week 5
Day 29:
Had a really easy morning and took our time leaving because we really wanted to savour having a bed and a room a bit longer before hitting the road again. Don’t get me wrong, we weren’t dreading getting back onto the road to continue our adventure, we just wanted to make sure we were fully charged up and ready to go. Before setting off we made sure to play with the host’s dogs some more. We stopped at Lidl for some snacks…that we really shouldn’t have bought in retrospect, we’ve been eating a lot of junk on this trip. We set off to Stirling from there. During the drive I noticed that I had a mosquito bite on my face, I had been so successful so far in avoiding those damn things but somehow it got my face and now I have a horribly itchy spot that looks like a pimple, it’s pretty annoying but oh well. We only really just quickly drove through Stirling which I thought wasn’t so bad, it was really crowded and raining, after all, we were able to get a good look at Stirling castle which was interesting. It was a very odd old looking castle. The walls were that of a regular castle but the actual building looks like an old manor of some sort. We drove straight to Loch Lomond after Stirling as per what we had originally planned but when we got there we realized that was kind of senseless and that it would make more sense to drive straight up to in Inverness so as to do the North Coast 500 road tour for the next 7 days and then just explore Loch Lomond on our way back down through Scotland. We drove through a pretty spectacular motorway on the A9 road to get up to Inverness which I recommend to anyone that wants to do a road tour of Scotland; such glorious sights, it was a stunning mountain and was very reminiscent of my home province of British Columbia, Canada. We were even lucky enough to see a rainbow going over the mountains. It made me wish that we could live in Scotland so that we could do this sort of drive on the regular. We chose to stop in a retail business park just outside of Inverness to relax and stretch our legs after having just done a 3.5-hour drive straight. Scotland really does seem much more laid back about things in general in comparison to England. For instance, if you’re in literally any place other than a big city in Scotland then pretty much every car park is free which is amazing when you want to just leave the car and go explore. We thought for sure that the car park at Loch Lomond National Park would cost money but nope, free. Another awesome thing about Scotland is that you can pitch up your tent almost anywhere in the wilderness as long as there are no cows or sheep around and not have to pay a thing. It can only be for a period of 2 or 3 days but that works just great for us since we won’t be in any one place for too long. There was a cinema in the retail business park showing any movie for £4.99 so since it was still only 8 and the movies were so cheap, we thought why not. We saw Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, which I recommend. Afterward, we drove to a lay by out near Loch Ness and parked up and pitched up with the rain coming down horribly.
Day 30:
Woke up to the bf wiping the windows, when you sleep in a car, a lot of condensation forms on the windows if you’ve had them closed all night. I had actually slept in till 9 which is unusual for having slept in the car. We had breakfast and organized the car and I decided to read the last couple of chapters of Harry Potter book 5 when suddenly the car made an alarming beeeeeep! The car battery had gone flat. We tried to flag a few cars down to help us jump-start the battery but then resigned to calling AA. The bf has a membership with them anyway but we figured it would take them a while to get there. While we waited for them to come we went down to the lakeside/lochside of Loch Ness to explore for a bit. It’s quite sad that Scotland has opened its country for people to camp anywhere they like and yet people still litter everywhere. On the lakeside/lochside we saw several littered disposable barbecues, a shopping bag, and a bucket. Well, we didn’t finish with the AA until about 1:30. From Loch Ness, we drove into Inverness to the tourist info centre to see if we could get a map of some sort. Once that was dealt with we began the drive of the North coast 500 but counter-clockwise, just because we felt that suited us more. There are so many small-town/villages along the route, it’s quite funny how small they are - we were able to drive-through some, in and out, in under a minute. We stopped at Dingwall and had some instant noodles for a late lunch. Through the course of this trip, I’ve gotten the bf to actually enjoy and crave instant noodles and afternoon tea (of course he still doesn’t like to drink tea). He used to always avoid noodles in a soup because he’s not much of a soup person but will now eat them with me so I feel quite happy about that. From Dingwall, we drove through Loch Fleet National nature reserve, past the gorgeous, tropical-looking beach of Embo by Carn Laith, a remnant of the iron age, and finally arrived in Helmsdale where we would pitch up at a high off lay by with a beautiful view of the sea for the night. We didn’t cover as much road as I thought we would but I feel pretty content with our 1st day of route 500 ….
Day 31:
Have you ever woken up randomly, early in the morning but then realized you were still really tired so you went back to sleep and told yourself that whatever you want to do can wait until later? That’s me every day recently but what’s unfortunate this time was when I woke up randomly I saw the sunrise peeking out through the window. I thought “Oh how pretty…I’m just gonna sleep in a bit more and watch it later”. Well, when I woke up later I realized what I had done and felt like crap especially since it was the last time we were going to be on the east coast and in such an opportune spot for a little while. That’s fine, I’ll make it my mission to wake up in a good spot for the sunrise soon enough, mark my words. Anyway, today we managed to cover a lot of ground although I didn’t feel like we did. That’s because although it’s a beautiful drive there are not many points of interest for us to stop at on the east side of the NC500. We left Helmsdale and drove to just outside of Lybster to a place called “Hill O’Many Stanes”, which is a historical landmark. Many hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is not for certain why but maybe 30 to 50 stones the size of footballs were planted on a Hill and dotted around in a circle. There are a few theories why like they were possibly put there as memorials of the dead. I don’t know what it is about the UK and their historical landmarks surrounding stones. First, there was Stonehenge in England, and now this and I’m sure there’s another landmark coming up on this trip to do with stones being erected on the ground. Actually, now that I think about it, there is a place similar to Stonehenge on the Isle of Portland, but it certainly isn’t as heavily regarded and I’m not sure if it has a name. After admiring these stones for a bit, we then parked up down the hill and made some coffee. We then drove to the Castle of Old Wick just outside of Wick, where we saw the spectacular view of a cliffside and a horrifyingly scary view of how far the sea was below and then we walked around and imagined what it would have been like back then for people to have built a castle on the edge of a cliff. From there, we drove to Duncansby Head and John O’Groats, the most northern tip of mainland UK. This is also a very small town but because of what it is known as it was very crowded with tourists from all over. It was pretty cool though because we could see some of the Orkney islands from there and to be honest, it looked mostly like it is farmland, barely inhabited. After a few obligatory photos, we set off to somewhere in between John O’Groats and Dunnet Bay, where we parked up at a nearby Tesco and had instant noodles for lunch while listening to the Abroad in Japan podcast. We then checked out Dunnet Bay, we fooled around a bit there, skipped stones in the water and just had a good time. I love beaches, especially deserted ones, they’re relaxing and even better when there is the view of mountains in the background. This was probably 1 of 3 beaches that we stopped throughout the day just to explore and walk around. I found a really pretty shell at one of them too. I think the other beaches we stopped at were Strathy Bay and Torrisdale Bay. From there we drove without stopping too long to Durness, where we parked up and made a sort of spaghetti soup for dinner. The drive there was - you know I’ve been saying it a lot, so from now on when I talk about something, you just gotta assume it’s pretty freakin awesome! We drove around lush valleys and lochs, it felt more like we were somewhere in Iceland or something. I honestly thoroughly recommend this drive to anyone and everyone to do in the future. This part of Scotland actually reminded me a lot of Canada as well,l which makes sense because an info sign along the route said that Scotland was its own island for a while and joined up with Wales and England about 430 million years ago but before then it is thought to have been a broken-off bit of land from North America! That’s definitely something. I’ll never forget this drive and I only hope some of the footage I have taken has captured even 10% of its beauty.
Day 32:
Soon after waking up and driving somewhere to freshen up, the bf and I both seemed to be craving chocolate and we were in luck because there happened to be a popular albeit expensive chocolate cafe nearby called “Cocoa Mountain”. The bf and I both ordered a large hot chocolate that was simply delectable and probably the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had. We accompanied our drinks with two treats; a chocolate fudgy brownie and a cheese and spring onion tart that were also very good. Once we were done savouring that little treat, we went to the heavily populated with tourists Smoo Cave. We had visited caves in Wales but this cave was huge! It really had a mysterious vibe to it and even had a waterfall in it. It was very cool and well worth a visit again, I just wish there weren’t so many people. Apparently, on good weather, they do inner cave tours on a boat, but after so much rainfall, the waterfall and stream were too strong to venture further in. Later on, we drove to Oldshoremore beach. We stopped a lot along the way for photos though. The NC 500 is very scenic drive and I wouldn’t mind driving it again but next time it will be when we’re sure the weather will be good and if and when we have a camper van. All the beaches along the route were just so beautiful and I loved stopping at them. We walked for a bit along the water but I accidentally stepped too close and got my boots soaked. My Salomons are supposed to be waterproof but I put them in the washing machine once and I forgot why but that may have damaged the integrity of the waterproof material. Anyway, we went back to the car park to clean my boots and apply more waterproof spray and then made instant noodles for lunch. From there we drove to two more viewpoints called the Assynt and Drumbeg viewpoints. They were similar in that they both had a view of lochs, mountains, and the surrounding small islands, but the atmosphere at them was different from one another. We had overcast at one and sunny skies at the other so that could have been part of it, but it was also the quality of nature. One was more lush and green than the other but they were still just as breathtakingly sunning. My blog entries come out after I’ve posted photos of the places we’ve been to on Instagram, so please do give those a look. On the way to our final nature stop of the day, we chanced upon a herd of Highland cows that were just gorgeous and there were two that were just pleasantly sitting right next to each other so I had to grab a photo of that. They were so lovely. Afterward, we drove to Clashnessie Falls which was a magnificently big waterfall, but because it had been raining in that area, the river leading up to it had overflowed its banks which made the path to it muddy and hard to walk in and since my boots were still drying I was walking in my sandals. We figured it was for the best to just admire it from afar, although it would have been an amazing shot up close. We ended the day by stopping in Ullapool where we would grab some reduced dinner from Tesco’s (wasn’t the best idea) and pitching up just outside of the town for the night.
Day 33:
Today we had a load of gorgeous and scenic stops and the weather was on our side for most of the day, yay! We started off our day by taking in the sights of the Loch Broom which the town of Ullapool was situated next to. It was a great way to start the day because you had the sun shining brightly and all these gorgeous mountains in the background. From Ullapool, we began the penultimate leg of the route. This route will probably take us 6 days although online they say it should take you anywhere from 7 to 10 days if you really want to explore and do a bunch of hikes and stay longer in some places. Some people even think doing it in 12 to 14 days is better, if you have the money and time to do all the islands off the mainland as optional detours of the route, but we neither have the time money nor the transport (this route would have been way better with a camper van or RV, but we only decided to do it last minute while doing our main road trip. As I said before, we had many stops today and took so many photos on our way to Kyle of Lochalsh, where we would be ending today’s leg. I can say for certain that this portion of the route is absolutely the most scenic but I probably also feel that way because it was sunny most of the day, albeit cold (too cold for August if you ask me, but we are up north). First, we stopped at the Corrieshalloch Gorge and national nature reserve. There was a very cool suspension bridge there, but the gorge was indeed pretty far down so my fear of heights was activated a bit. There we also had a view of lovely, big waterfalls called the Falls of Measach. I’m surprised at the number of tourist areas that are free, well actually pretty much all of the spots along this route have been free whereas in Vancouver you can be sure that you’d be charged an arm and a leg to enter them. After seeing the falls, we made some coffee and then set off. I felt like every couple of minutes we were stopping and getting out of the car. To be honest I felt a twinge of annoyance about it but couldn’t really complain because there were just that many gorgeous and breathtaking sights to behold whether it was the lochs or the mountains. I don’t know what to tell you. If you haven’t got time to do the whole 5 to 7 days of the route than just spare one day to drive the stretch from Ullapool the Kyle of Lochalsh and you won’t regret it. Especially on a sunny day. Of course, you’d need to get up to a Ullapool first… but seriously we stopped so many times that I’m not even sure where exactly we stopped because the whole stretch made our jaws drop. I mean the days leading up to today we also saw a lot of amazing sights on the NC500 so I’m not selling those short by any means but I guess even though the rain did give those views a cool atmosphere, I didn’t enjoy them as much I enjoyed the views today because we had the luck of having the sun on our side. After the gorge, the plan was to stop at Ardessie Falls, Mellon Udrigle, Fire more beach, Gairloch then Redpoint and then Sheildag and Torridon and finally end off in Kyle of Lochalsh because those were the tour suggestions that I found online but for the most part we made our own stops along the route and it was awesome. I mean we did drive-through most of them. We made a detour through Torridon village, then stopped at a viewpoint in Shieldag and had lunch but finally, after a very eventful day at so many sites we got dinner in Kyle of Lochalsh and found a lay by to pitch up for the night.
Day 34:
Today didn’t really go as planned. Overall this trip has had a bunch of highlights and I’m so thankful to the BF to have been able to do this. I’m also thankful to his friend T, and my friend V, for being able to make this trip great. This trip isn’t over yet with 10 more days to go, but it’s just a shame that ever since we left the South coast of England our days have been heavily influenced by the rain. Today is one of those days. It still turned out alright though and the bf and I had a laugh. So originally the plan was for us to take a detour from the NC500 and spend the day in the Isle of Skye. I had been really looking forward to this as I had heard many good things. But from the moment we woke up the winds were so strong and the sky was heavy with overcast. Very foreboding. Actually, it made me wish I was back in Cambridge, at home, enjoying the sunny weather. Nevertheless, we drove across the long bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh to the Isle of Skye and what awaited us there were torrential rain and heavy winds. Our first stop was supposed to be a place called “The Storr”. Which is a 674 m tall landslip with a rocky face on one side and a grassy slope on the other, it was supposed to be a very dramatic sight, but because of the low cloud and rain, you couldn’t see a thing. Didn’t stop a bunch of tourists from getting out and trying to take photos, but we carried on since we didn’t think it seemed worth getting wet for. After that, we drove by another tourist stop that I hadn’t accounted for, at a waterfall called Kealt Falls. We thought about carrying on but the bf though the weather might add some drama to the falls. Since I was the only one with boots on and what I thought was a decent rain jacket (it’s old and worn), I went off on my own to see if it was worth both of us getting out for. Big mistake. The rain and winds were cruel and it felt like I was being blown away. The view was pretty but not really worth getting thoroughly soaked for. I went back to the car and I was shivering and had a headache from the cold winds. I am glad I tried though because now I know that I don’t want to be out in that weather. We spent the rest of the day in the car which wasn’t so great for our legs. They were both swollen and achy by the end of it. At least I learned from this experience that I need a new rain jacket and should definitely buy some waterproof trousers. We didn’t stop anywhere else in Skye unfortunately so I would like to think I would go back one day. We drove to the northernmost part of the island and then all the way back down to Kyle of Lochalsh while enjoying the views of the dramatic weather over the dramatic mountains. On the drive back down to Kyle, we saw two beautifully pronounced rainbows that were really quite the sight. Once back, we got Chinese takeaway and then agreed to leave early and drive to the next village of Strathcarron and stay there for the night. Except that didn’t happen. The bf and I were so into our conversation about tons of random crap that I hadn’t been paying attention to the map and he missed the turnoff on the road. We were so deep in conversation and that an hour had passed and neither of us noticed! The drive was only supposed to take 30 minutes, I thought it felt like a long 30 minutes….xD we weren’t even at the end of the NC 500 route anymore. He had taken a southbound road that would still get us back to Inverness, but on a completely different route. It so wasn’t so bad though, we were essentially driving through Woodland forests that took us along the other side of Loch Ness that we were originally on before we started the NC500 route. This side had all the Loch Ness monster tourist stuff; I was wondering where they all were! Eventually, we got back to the same retail business park we had begun this mini-adventure, and then the bf got out to stretch his legs while I stayed inside to keep warm and write. By the time we found a layby we were both exhausted and ready to call it a day.
Day 35:
Had a day off from traveling today. We both needed it and our legs were swollen from spending all day the day before sitting in the car so we spent some time aimlessly walking through Inverness and playing pokemon go.

60 years since 1st American in space: Tourists lining up (AP) Sixty years after Alan Shepard became the first American in space, everyday people are on the verge of following in his cosmic footsteps. Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin used Wednesday’s anniversary to kick off an auction for a seat on the company’s first crew spaceflight—a short Shepard-like hop launched by a rocket named New Shepard. The Texas liftoff is targeted for July 20, the date of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic aims to kick off tourist flights next year. And Elon Musk’s SpaceX will launch a billionaire and his sweepstakes winners in September. That will be followed by a flight by three businessmen to the International Space Station in January.
The U.S. birthrate is falling; other countries have faced the same problem (Washington Post) With the U.S. birthrate declining for the sixth year in a row and undergoing its largest drop in nearly 50 years, according to provisional data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States is facing a dilemma with which many wealthy nations in Europe and Asia have long grappled. Instead of trying to ramp up immigration, some governments have tried subsidizing fertility treatments, offering free day care and generous parental leave, and paying thousands of dollars in cash grants to parents. But there’s little evidence that these policies have been effective on a large scale. South Korea, for instance, spent roughly $120 billion between 2005 and 2018 to incentivize having children, but its birthrate continued to fall. Singapore began offering new child-care subsidies, more-generous maternity leave policies and grants for new parents that today amount to $7,330 per baby. But those interventions didn’t reverse the trend: Singapore currently has the world’s third-lowest fertility rate. And Japan, Russia, Estonia and other nations have similar problems.
Protest road blockades halt Colombian coffee exports, federation says (Reuters) Road blockades connected to anti-government protests in Colombia, which marked their eighth day on Wednesday, have halted shipments of top agricultural export coffee, the head of the grower’s federation said. The protests, originally called in opposition to a now-canceled tax reform plan, are now demanding the government take action to tackle poverty, police violence and inequalities in the health and education systems. Twenty-four people, mostly demonstrators, have died. “We are stopped completely, exports are stopped, there is no movement of coffee to ports nor internally,” federation head Roberto Velez said in a phone interview.
20 dead in Rio de Janeiro shootout (Reuters) At least 20 people, including a police officer, died on Thursday in a shootout during a police operation against drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro’s Jacarezinho shanty town, O Globo newspaper reported on its website. Two passengers on a metro train were also wounded in the shooting in the northern Rio neighborhood, the newspaper said.
Gunboats and blockade threats as U.K., France clash over fishing (NBC News) The U.K. and France were engaged in a naval standoff on Thursday as a long-simmering dispute over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated in the English Channel. France deployed two maritime patrol boats to the waters off the British Channel island of Jersey, its navy said, after the British Navy dispatched two of its own vessels to the area late Wednesday. The dueling moves came as a flotilla of French fishing trawlers sailed to the Jersey port of St. Helier to protest over fishing rights. The French government has suggested it could cut power supplies to the island if its fishermen are not granted full access to U.K. fishing waters under post-Brexit trading terms. Clément Beaune, the French secretary of state for European affairs, told AFP on Thursday that Paris will “not be intimidated” by the British. On the other side of the Channel, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged his "unwavering support" for the island after he spoke with Jersey officials about the prospect of a French blockade. Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands with a population of 108,000, is geographically closer to France than Britain. It sits just 14 miles off the French coast and receives most of its electricity from France via undersea cables.
Ukraine wants aid, NATO support from Blinken’s visit (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with his Ukrainian counterpart in Kyiv Thursday, telling him that he was there to “reaffirm strongly” Washington’s commitment to Ukraine’s “sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.” Blinken also assured Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the U.S. was committed “to work with you and continue to strengthen your own democracy, building institutions, advancing your reforms against corruption.” By visiting so early in his tenure, before any trip to Russia, Blinken is signaling that Ukraine is a high foreign-policy priority for President Joe Biden’s administration. But what he can, or will, deliver in the meeting later with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is unclear.
India hits another grim record as it scrambles for oxygen supply (AP) Infections in India hit another grim daily record on Thursday as demand for medical oxygen jumped seven-fold and the government denied reports that it was slow in distributing life-saving supplies from abroad. The number of new confirmed cases breached 400,000 for the second time since the devastating surge began last month. The 412,262 cases pushed India’s tally to more than 21 million. The Health Ministry also reported 3,980 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 230,168. Experts believe both figures are an undercount. Eleven COVID-19 patients died as the pressure in the oxygen line dropped suddenly in a government medical college hospital in Chengalpet town in southern India on Wednesday night, possibly because of a faulty valve, The Times of India newspaper reported. Hospital authorities said they had repaired the pipeline last week, but the consumption of oxygen doubled since then, the daily said.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid gains chance to form government, oust Netanyahu (Washington Post) Yair Lapid, a former news anchor and leader of Israel’s centrist opposition, was picked to negotiate a new governing coalition Wednesday, opening the possibility of Israel getting its first government not led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in more than a decade. President Reuven Rivlin tapped Lapid to make the next attempt to form a government one day after Netanyahu failed to assemble a parliamentary majority after 28 days of effort. Under Israel’s system, Lapid also has four weeks to craft a power-sharing plan. If he falls short, the president could open to the process to any member of the Knesset or call for Israel’s fifth election since the spring of 2019. Lapid will face a stiff challenge in trying to find common ground among the range of anti-Netanyahu parties elected in March. As a bloc, they would control enough seats to secure a majority. But ideologically, they range from the far right to the far left of Israel’s political spectrum. They also include Israeli Arab parties that traditionally play no part in supporting governing coalitions but that may be needed this time.
Instagram fuels rise in black-market sales of maids into Persian Gulf servitude (Washington Post) The advent of Instagram in recent years has helped create an international black market for migrant workers, in particular women recruited in Africa and Asia who are sold into servitude as maids in Persian Gulf countries. Unlicensed agents have exploited the social media platform to place these women into jobs that often lack documentation or assurances of proper pay and working conditions. Several women who were marketed via Instagram described being treated essentially as captives and forced to work grueling hours for far less money than they had been promised. “They advertise us on social media, then the employer picks. Then we are delivered to their house. We are not told anything about the employers. You’re just told to take your stuff, and a driver takes you there,” said Vivian, 24, from Kenya. Domestic servants sold on the platform described encountering threats, exploitation and abuse. The agencies which marketed them, meanwhile, made thousands of dollars. In response to a request for comment last month, an Instagram spokesperson asked for the list of accounts identified by The Post so company officials could investigate. Instagram has since deleted these accounts.
Nonuplets: Woman From Mali Gives Birth To 9 Babies (NPR) A Malian woman has given birth to nine babies, in what could become a world record. Halima Cissé had been expecting to have seven newborns: ultrasound sessions had failed to spot two of her babies. "The newborns (five girls and four boys) and the mother are all doing well," Mali's health minister, Dr. Fanta Siby, said in an announcement about the births. Professor Youssef Alaoui, medical director of the private Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca where Cissé gave birth, said the babies were born at 30 weeks. The newborns weighed between 500 grams and 1 kilogram (about 1.1 to 2.2 pounds), he told journalists. The clinic has deployed a team of around 30 staff members to aid the mother's delivery and care for her nine children.
Nigeria reels from nationwide wave of deadly violence (The Guardian) Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has come under mounting pressure from critics and allies alike as the country reels from multiple security crises that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent weeks. An alarming wave of violence has left millions in Africa’s most populous country in uproar at the collapse in security. Attacks by jihadist groups in the north-east have been compounded by a sharp rise in abductions targeting civilians in schools and at interstate links across Nigeria. Mass killings by bandit groups in rural towns, a reported rise in armed robberies in urban areas and increasingly daring attacks on security forces by pro-Biafran militants in the south-east have also all risen. In April alone, almost 600 civilians were killed across the country and at least 406 abducted by armed groups, according to analysis by the Council on Foreign Relations. The violence has left much of the country on edge and Buhari facing the fiercest criticism since he took office.

Ancestral Health: What It Is and How It Can Help You
We’re living in a time of incredible innovation and advancement, yet we’re sicker and more overweight than ever before. And unfortunately, there’s every indication that, based on projected statistics, many people will never get healthy and stay that way.
Some days it seems as if there’s no solution for our health woes, not to mention the pain and suffering caused by the financial burdens of chronic illness. But I can assure you that that’s far from the case and that we can break this cycle.
It’s possible to halt and even reverse the current disease epidemic—using a strategy we have access to right now. It isn’t a brand-new drug, device, or surgical procedure. The solution is ancestral health. By following the blueprint for healthy living that our hunter–gatherer ancestors laid out for us so long ago, we can stave off the long list of uniquely modern chronic conditions, stay naturally lean and fit, and age gracefully.
Chronic disease has reached epidemic levels, and modern medicine can’t seem to halt its progression. Find out how ancestral health—moving, eating, and living more like our ancestors did—can stem the rising tide of chronic illness. #paleo #healthylifestyle #chriskresser
Chronic Disease Is Common, But It Isn’t Normal
Chances are that either someone close to you has a chronic disease or you’re dealing with one yourself, if not both of these scenarios. Chronic illness is so prevalent now that it’s almost impossible to imagine life without it: six in 10 U.S. adults have a chronic disease, while four in 10 suffer with two or more chronic conditions. (1)
Nearly six million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s. (2)
More than 100 million Americans have either prediabetes or diabetes. (3)
Some 50 million people in this country have an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis. (4)
Worldwide, an estimated 2.2 billion people are either overweight or obese; among the most populous countries, the highest prevalence of obesity can be found, you guessed it, here in the States. (5, 6)
One-third of Americans suffer from high blood pressure, with some statistics suggesting that hypertension may actually affect half of all U.S. adults. (7, 8, 9)
Yet throughout most of our species’ enduring existence, humans did live largely free of these illnesses that today shorten our lifespan and make us miserable. Chronic disease may be our “new normal,” but it definitely isn’t our “normal normal.”
Paleontological and archaeological findings have confirmed this, but perhaps the best evidence is the fact that remaining hunter–gatherer societies—who live as closely as possible to the way our Paleolithic ancestors did hundreds of thousands of years ago—don’t generally suffer from the most common chronic conditions.
One study of the Tsimané people in Bolivia found that they have a prevalence of atherosclerosis 80 percent lower than ours in the United States and that nine in 10 Tsimané adults aged 40 to 94 have completely clean arteries and no risk of heart disease. Researchers also found that the average 80-year-old Tsimané male has the same vascular age as an American in his mid-50s. (10) Studies of the Hadza of Tanzania reveal that less than 2 percent of Hadzan adults qualify as overweight. And type 2 diabetes is so rare among these and other contemporary hunter–gatherer populations that few reports looking into its prevalence even exist. (11)
Mismatch: Why Your Health Is So Different From Your Ancestors’ Health
So what happened? How did the majority of us go from being naturally inclined toward health to being seemingly guaranteed at least one debilitating diagnosis?
In a word: mismatch—between our genes (hardwired genetic programming), our physiology, and our biology on the one hand and the modern environment we’re living in on the other.
All organisms are adapted to survive and thrive in a particular environment. When that environment changes faster than the organism can adapt, mismatch occurs. This is a fundamental principle of evolutionary biology, and it applies to humans as much as it applies to any other organism in nature.
Our environment is almost unrecognizable from that of our ancestors, and we aren’t  eating, moving, or resting like the hunter–gatherers that we still are, biologically. We know from hard evidence that this mismatch—pitting environment against biology—is the primary driver of chronic disease.
Some of the starkest examples of this include studies and observations of existing 21st century hunter–gatherers reporting that when they leave their villages and trade their traditional ways for a Western lifestyle, they develop diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular complications. (12, 13)
Back in Balance: The Basics of an Ancestral Lifestyle
It’s clear: the fastest way to recover your natural health is to return to a way of eating and living that more closely matches what your genes and biology are designed for. I’ve written and talked extensively about this approach online, in my books, and on my podcast, but here’s a broad overview to set you on the path, right now, to reclaiming your vitality through ancestral health.
Eat Real, Nourishing, High-Quality Foods
We know, without a doubt, that our Paleolithic ancestors ate animal products. Indeed, most researchers believe that consuming meat and fish is what led to our larger brains and smaller guts compared to other primates. (14, 15, 16) Though no ancestral population following a completely vegetarian or vegan diet has ever been discovered, it’s evident that hunter–gatherers did also enjoy plant foods, such as starchy root vegetables. (17)
Some traditional cultures also consumed grains and legumes. But those who did went to great lengths to break down the natural nutrient inhibitors these foods contain; these methods included soaking, sprouting, fermenting, and leavening.
We also know, without a doubt, that hunter–gatherers did not consume refined sugar, flour, and seed oils, or what I call “the three horsemen of the apocalypse” because they promote overeating and inflammation, which is at the root of all modern disease. To my mind, the introduction of industrial food processing has had the most detrimental effect on our health of any other factor in the last few hundred years—and possibly in the entire history of humankind.
In addition to the harmful presence of refined sugars, flour, and seed oils, processed foods also deliver high levels of chemical additives and preservatives. Some of these ingredients have known negative effects, from leaky gut and autoimmune disease to stroke and kidney damage, while the effects of others are still unknown. (18, 19, 20)
Here’s your ancestral diet action plan:
Bypass bags and boxes. Of course, not all foods that come in bags and boxes are harmful, so this isn’t meant to be taken literally. It’s just a helpful guideline to steer you toward real food (see below). Butter is often packaged in a box, and frozen vegetables (and some fresh) come in plastic bags. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat butter and vegetables. But in general, if you follow this precept, you’ll minimize your intake of health-damaging flour, sugar and other sweeteners, industrial seed oils, and other processed and refined ingredients.
Base your diet on real, whole, nutrient-dense foods like meat, organ meat, fish and shellfish, eggs, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, and starchy plants like potatoes and sweet potatoes, along with healthy fats to aid in nutrient absorption.
Exercise caution with grains and legumes. If you choose to eat these foods, it’s best to soak them prior to cooking to maximize nutrient bioavailability.
Focus on quality over quantity. Choose local and organic produce and pasture-raised animal products or wild-caught fish whenever possible, which most closely mimic the foods available to our ancestors via hunting and foraging.
Sit Less and Move (Much) More—Sometimes Intensely
Movement played a major role in daily life for hunter–gatherers. After all, they spent the majority of their time, well, hunting and gathering. They had to exert themselves, and often quite strenuously, to survive: our ancestors sprinted, jogged, climbed, carried, and jumped intermittently throughout the day, on top of walking an average of six miles and running one-half to one mile per day. (21)
In other words, they didn’t sit all day like so many of us do. We spend endless hours working at computers, watching TV, and commuting by car. In fact, the typical U.S. adult is now sedentary for about 60 percent of his or her waking life and sits for an average of six or seven hours every day. (22, 23) Sitting has been called the new smoking, and for good reason: it’s linked to heart disease, insulin resistance, cancer, and the list goes on. What’s more, research has found these same negative health outcomes in those who exercise but still spend the majority of their day seated.
Your ancestral movement action plan:
Stand up. It’s the simplest way to sit less. I recommend standing for half of your day.
Talk a walk. Actually, take lots of walks and regularly engage in other low-intensity activities. Consider walking or bicycling to work, doing your own household chores, and finding a hobby like gardening that, quite literally, moves you. If you can build a daily walk into your workday—parking further away from your office, walking during your lunch break, or walking with your child or a pet after work or dinner—it becomes a habit that’s easy to keep.
Push yourself occasionally throughout the week with bouts of more intense exercise; just don’t overdo it. I recommend a protocol established by my friend and colleague Dan Pardi.
Sleep More and Stress Less
I’m sure if I asked you to conjure up an image of a hunter–gatherer, he or she wouldn’t be lounging lazily on a sofa. Although they were almost always on the move, these people relaxed, too. Our ancestors alternated strenuous and demanding days of physical activity with days of rest, an instinctual response that protected them from injury and fatigue.
Our modern lifestyle is a stark mismatch in this regard. We live in a culture that values productivity and activity above all else and is almost scornful of rest and relaxation. “Resting” for many people means browsing the internet or engaging with some other kind of sleep-sapping, artificial light-emitting electronic device that is anything but restful for the brain and the body. We’ve not only forgotten the value of rest—we’ve forgotten how to do it.
Thus, we’re stressed out. Constantly. Our ancestors experienced stress when fleeing a predator or out on a hunt. But, as I shared above, they punctuated these stressful times with moments of calm. We simply aren’t built for chronic stress, as evidenced by the immense amount of research illustrating that it wreaks total havoc on our bodies.
Your ancestral action plan for R&R:
Sleep soundly, and for seven to eight hours a night. You can’t be healthy without adequate sleep. Period. Check out my steps for beating insomnia and adopting good sleep hygiene.
Manage your stress. There’s no way to completely remove stress from your life, but you can avoid unnecessary stress by learning to say no to projects or commitments you can’t handle, staying away from people who get your blood boiling, and turning off the news (or at least limiting your exposure to it), as examples. To mitigate the harmful effects of the stressors you can’t avoid, try relaxation practices and techniques such as meditation, yoga, and calm breathing.
Prioritize pleasure. Listening to music, playing with your pets, laughing with friends, and spending time outdoors all can help you cultivate more pleasure in your life, and pleasure is the antidote to chronic stress.
Now I’m interested to hear your thoughts. Is your lifestyle in line with that of our ancestors? What changes can you make to your habits to get more in tune with your hunter–gatherer heritage? Comment below and let me know!

Forever Means Forever - part 3
Tumblr media
Pairing: Steve Rogers x reader
Summary: You finally pull Steve out of the ice and get to see your best friend for the first time in a lifetime.
WC: 1k+
A/N: Sooo my computer died while I was almost finished with this, so all my hard word and thousands of words went down the drain :). I managed to finally write it again after a while, although I’m not sure anyone’s reading it anyways. Please leave me feedback or even just a little comment, it’s what keeps me going.
Warnings: angst
part 1 part 2 masterlist
You crossed your legs and twiddled your thumbs. Literally twiddled your thumbs, you were that bored. Fury was somewhere in this godforsaken SHIELD headquarters base, debriefing Steve. You hated being here. It was so cold, technologically advanced, grey, and lifeless. You missed the days when there were 3 buttons on an elevator, not 300. You’d been here a handful of times before, and every time you wished it was your last. This place creeped you out. That’s not to say that the ship you resided on wasn’t the same, it was. However, your room was decked out in all its 40′s glory. You had kept a few posters from Steve and Bucky’s old rooms, and had it stocked exclusively with 40′s appliances, from the fridge to the radio to the oven to the sink. Considering you didn’t have any family or friends, at least you could be comfortable in a familiar environment. The lack of friends was due to the fact that A. you rarely left your ship save for missions, B. everyone was scared of you, and C. you never really found anyone who you could tolerate.
Your anxiety levels were through the roof. Sure, it must take a long time to debrief someone on the last 70 years, but it had felt like hours since you’d been sitting there. Out of sheer boredom, and if you weren’t genetically engineered to survive on as little sleep as possible, you might have dozed off. The few agents that littered the hallways gave you sideways glances when they realized who you were. What was America’s Armor doing here? You laughed at your superhero name. It was foolish, really, but once the press had come up with it, it stuck. Your inability to get injured and your knack for saving the country in a pinch made it seem like a no-brainer. You wished you’d got something cooler, like Captain America.
You tried to occupy your mind as your ship diverted its course towards the Arctic, towards Steve’s plane. The hours ticked by and you felt more bored and anxious than ever. You tried to keep the memories of your old best friends out of your mind, but they pushed past the walls you’d built over the last seven decades to keep them in. You were ripped out of your thoughts when you felt the ship stop abruptly and lower itself onto the ground. An agent boarded, handing you huge jacket to help shield you from the subzero temperatures. You pulled it over your stealth suit and climbed out of the ship, crunching over the snow and thanking your hood for covering your face against the biting wind. You ignored the agents offering you a harness to lower you into the ship, dropping in instead. You followed the light that peeked out of a nearby chamber of the ship. Your breath caught in your throat when you saw him trapped in the ice. The agents backed out of the room, no doubt ordered by Fury to give you a few minutes alone. Crossing the floor tentatively, you knelt by Steve as their crunching footsteps left the room. The only sounds were your heartbeat in your ears and your translucent breath hitting the air. Your eyes ghosted over Steve. He still looked the same as he did a lifetime ago. You did as well, but your mind aging while your body stayed in the 40′s. Hot tears escaped your eyes and dripped onto the ice, reforming only seconds later. You realized that it probably looked like you were mourning over a casket at a funeral.
“(Y/L/N)!” Fury barked in your ear. You jumped and touched your earpiece.
“Yes?” you responded.
“Get ready,” your heart jumped and you knew what he was talking about. A door opened to your left and a hesitant Steve walked through, eyes searching the room as if looking for a threat. When they settled on you, a million emotions seemed to flow through them. Recognition, confusion, relief, sadness, uncertainty. Both of your eyes immediately filled with tears as your ran to each other. You gripped each together so tight that you were sure nothing could tear you apart. You felt Steve pick you up, spinning you in the air as you cried into each other’s shoulders. His arms were around your middle and he raised one to push your head further into him. You both cried and held each other tight, not caring who was around and if you were making a scene. It was only you two. You were the only people on the entire planet in that moment. All of the emotions that you had locked away for almost a century came rushing back, hitting you like a 50 foot tall wave. You weren’t sure when was the last time you’d cried this hard, let alone cried. Yes, Steve missed you, but what were months to him was a lifetime to you. You weren’t certain how much time had passed between when you’d first seen Steve come through the door, but you didn’t care. You could’ve stayed there for hours. You both pulled away, looking into each others eyes and smiling.
“I missed you,” Steve said, grinning through the tears.
“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you, Steve,” you pulled him into another embrace and let everything you’d been holding back for all those years go.

Becoming a Digital Nomad: A quick and dirty guide to UpWork
Tumblr media
(My “office” on the Isla of Flores in Guatemala)
Freelancing is one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
Although now I have moved off of freelancing and am more of an independent contractor, I still pick up a few freelancing projects ever quarter.
Because it is simply a great way to make money. Loads of people are leaving their office and opting for something more flexible: according to the FreshBooks Self-Employment Report, potentially 27 million Americans will leave the traditional work in favor of self-employment by 2020. This shift would triple the current population of full-time self-employed professionals bringing the total number of workers to 42 million.
And that’s just in the US, imagine what these figures look like globally.
I’m guessing if you are here reading this, we’ve talked about it already and I have sent you the link, so you are pretty sold: but let’s review:
You choose your hours. No bosses saying “You’re ten minutes late!” or having to suffer through another 8-hour shift that just never seems to end. You pick when you work. If you are hungover and can’t bring it to the table: that’s your call. (But warning: you will not get the money if you don’t work.)
You choose your projects. After the first couple projects (which is a bit of a mad and dirty dash, I am afraid) you get to start to get choices. Storytime! Once I was working for this American Museum Tour company. At first, they were loads of fun, and they even flew me to New York City multiple times, and I got a paid trip to Switzerland. Things were great, until the point they weren’t. Then I began to hate it with the passion of a thousand suns. So one day, I just quit. The next day, I found another project, and they paid me more money, and were a better company. It was bloody easy. Stop suffering. Pick a project you like and only stick with it until/if you stop liking them.  (Note: I have been with the new client for 3 years, and they are still a dream to work with.)
You get paid real money. There is this idea that if it happens on the internet, maybe there is something sketchy about it. This could be true in some cases: but in this case, you get actual money (ok, sometimes it is in a different currency then the country you are living in, but you can turn it into your currency) that goes into your actual bank account and you can actually buy and pay for things. For sitting at home.  Doing stuff on your laptop.
You can learn new stuff on the job. I definitely didn’t start out with all the skills I have now. I started off as a modest internet researcher, and through time, worked my way up to having this whole jetpack of skills that clients not only want, but need. Don’t feel daunted about not being able to do everything right away. Start with a good project, and be a sponge. Learn as much as you can, because these skills are valuable (remember the part about making real money?)
You can go anywhere in the world. As long as they have wifi, and your clients are ok with you being in a different timezone? You can go anywhere. Since working as a freelancer, I have travelled to, get this, 30 countries. Screw waiting around for a two-week vacation. Go see the world. And make some money while you do it.
Now, here comes the part where I bring that excitement down to a reasonable level.
There are some hard truths about freelancing I am going to be frank about.
The first is that it is real work. You’ve got to be dedicated and you absolutely have to have a rock-solid work ethic. If you don’t, you will not get very far, because this is not the kind of job you can “float by” on. People will drop you like a hot potato the second you stop performing. And there is no safety net. You will have to hustle your own projects for the first bit: people will not be chomping at the bit to get you. In fact, they will probably, most like, almost definitely ignore you for the most part. There are literally 12 million users on UpWork: if you aren’t hustling, you aren’t going anywhere. Apply for ten positions a day. Get up at 4am for a Skype interview. Be charming af. Follow up, then follow up again. Don’t let them forget you, and if they don’t hire you, ask why and then get better. You’ve got to get your own work. Lastly, you are probably not going to make mad money right away. The money is there, and you can have some of it, but you are probably going to have to do a bit of grunt work first, and I am talking up to 2-3 months at a low rate. But keep at it. There is a bunch of money and magic at the top of the mountain.
Still with me?
Ok. Let’s get into it.
Why UpWork?
So, when I first started freelancing, I signed up for a few different Freelancing websites that were around at the time: oDesk, Elance and Freelancer.   There were others I looked at, like Toptal and Fivrr. But I couldn’t see how people could make actual money to pay bills on Fivrr, but didn’t have high enough skills or experience for Toptal.   I got work within a few weeks of signing up for oDesk, and after seeing the cut that Freelancer was taking after one project, stuck with oDesk. oDesk merged with Elance, they changed their name to UpWork, and here we are.
That being said: I love UpWork. At one point, one of my clients asked me if we could leave UpWork, and he would pay me directly. I agreed. That is $1000 I will never get back. He was a nice guy, but at that moment, I was screwed over, and there was nothing I could do. UpWork protects you from that happening.
Secondly, with the sheer amount of freelancers on the site: clients are simply drawn to UpWork. They aren’t just looking for the cheapest: they are looking for the variety.
Note: I am not longer using UpWork, and work 100% on my regular clients and referrals. But there is no way I would have gotten there, or gotten so many skills, without UpWork, so I still think it is the best place to start.
Setting up your profile
Here are three great articles on how to set up a great profile:
Enhance Your Upwork Freelancer Profile for Greater Success
How to Create an Upwork Profile That Gets You Clients, FAST
Sample: Profile
I am not going to rewrite what they’ve said. Because that is a waste of time (hurray for understanding time management!)
But here are my top 6 tips:
Upload a profile picture where you look good. I mean real good. Don’t be an a** about it either. Clean, professional, and hot. That’s all. No party hats or dogs or sunglasses or duck-facey, off camera looks.
Pick 5 skills. Even though they let you have 10: be clear about what you can and want to do. Now, on the topic of skills: you do not need a journalism degree to be a writer. Or a photography degree to manage an Instagram account. Think about the kinds of things you like. Are you a grammar nut? Put those skills to work as an editor. Do you speak multiple langauges fluently? Become a translator. Do you love spreadsheets? That is a freaking skill, (wo)man! Are you generally a happy-go-lucky, I-can-get-shit-done kind of person? Be someone’s personal virtual assistant. You do not have to be defined by what you’ve already done, focus on what you like to do.
Watch out for typos. I was hiring for this client once, and found a woman who was amazing. We had a skype interview and I was ready to sign on the dotting line, but at the last minute, my client looked at her profile and found a typo and said “No.” Simple as that. I was gutted, because she was really fantastic. Have someone proofread your profile, because it’s that easy for potential clients to move on to the next person.
Don’t worry about tests. Very few clients look at them. Or care. Even if you are in the top 5%. They are nice, but also, kind of a waste of time.
Fill in your profile so that your bar goes up to 100%. Just do it. I know it’s work, but you’ll get more clients.
Set a reasonable rate for how long you’ve been on the site. Yes, I know you’d love to be paid $50 and hour, but if you’ve got zero experience or hours, you are not going to get clients. Honestly, start at $7-$10 an hour. Then after your first 100 hours, you can bump your rate up to what you think you should be getting. Why 100 hours? Because it puts you in a different search category: a better one. Wait...what are these search categories? Well, when a client is looking for someone, this is what it looks like:
Tumblr media
See that massive jump in the number of  Freelancers (the bracket number) on the “Hours Billed” section? That means your competition decreases by more than half, and you can start to get more choosy about your gigs.
On getting hired
Remember that thing I said about hustling? Yep. You’ve got to do that.
But here are some more tips.
Apply, apply, apply. Then apply some more. I don’t even know how many proposals I wrote in those first few weeks, but it was a lot. And here’s the thing, you can’t cheat. You’ve got to read the position, and write to them personally. All the low-end people cut and paste and never move ahead. Put some soul into it, especially at first.
Start small (I mean cheap): Although your insides might be screaming “I AM BETTER THAN THAT.” take 1-3 low paid one-off projects. Get a five-star rating and use it to propel yourself to the next freelancer level.
In the interview process: be as attentive as possible. This means responding right away to messages, and being available for interviews even if the hours are weird (remember the 4am comment? Yeah, I did that once). Follow up with them, and then follow up again. Be impressive.
On working as a freelancer
Wow! Have you gotten a gig? Good job! You rock! From here on in you are kind of a free agent, and it is between you and your client, but here are some tips.
Get really good at online communication. This means responding to emails quickly, and being clear. This means if at any point you don’t understand what your client wants: you ask them before charging them for work they didn’t need or want or is incorrect. Give them your email, Facebook and Skype, and ask them how their team communicates (Google Hangouts? Slack? Basecamp *gulp*) then be there.
Download the time tracker and stick to working when you are working. It takes three seconds to turn off the tracker, check your Facebook, and then turn it on again. But once you get a screen grab of you hanging out on Facebook, it looks bad. Also, I have come to suspect (from being caught more than once) that UpWork automatically looks for you slacking off, ie. Facebook.
Get your hours in. If they have given you hours, they expect the work to be done. Coming back without the work done with excuses and worse, not having filled up your hours? Bad. Remember the thing I said about them dropping you like you’re hot? Get the work done in the hours they’ve given you, or talk with them and discuss with them why you need fewer hours. That is far better than simply coming up short.
Getting good feedback is important. Even if this means swallowing your pride from time to time. Here is what they are going to rate you on:
Tumblr media
But wait: why is there public feedback and private feedback? Well, you know how you’ve got that job success thing on the side of your profile?  Over time, you get secret points. Those secret points work up to you being featured higher when the clients use the search tool. Also, you’ll get some cool perks in the future, like the Premium Freelancer program.
Lastly, and most importantly: GETTING PAID So, I have to be honest here. I have never fully figured out the timing of the payments. It goes through my PayPal, and whenever it hits a $1000 of earning, it goes into my bank account. There is a bunch of information here though. If you’d like to talk to me privately about payments (ie. Taxes and other trickier areas) feel free to message me.
I hope this gives you enough to get started. As I said before, freelancing is an amazing option if you are done with the office and dream about doing something slightly more, slightly different and have the gumption to do it. If you have any questions, want me to review your profile, or just want to talk more about freelancing— shoot me off a message, I love helping people get one step closer to freedom, be that fiscal or philosophical.
PS. Here is the list of countries I’ve been to while working as a freelancer: Austria, Belarus, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, El Salvador, England, Faroe Islands, France, Guatemala, Germany, Honduras, Iceland, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and the United States.
