LET'S TALK COSTUMES YALL!
I don't completely understand the dislike of the Wembley production too well (It's a non-replica production yall, for what it is it's a lot of fun!) but I have seen that a major point of contention for people seems to be the costumes, so I wanted to create a post discussing why I think they are done very well.
First off, they are wonderfully colorful- one of the things that always concerns me in costuming is a disappearance of color in favor of darker neutral colors, but even the characters that have closer to neutral pallets- Rusty, Momma, the Components- all still have elements of color within their designs, and different textures and shapes to make them visually interesting. As this musical is a dream being had by a little kid, the colors also help reflect this as well- Control is an imaginative child, whose made up world reflects that.
Tumblr media
The three main engines (Rusty, Greaseball, Electra) all have very distinct appearances, marking them as principal figures and representative of the three different types of engine we see- diesel, steam, and electric. All three have unique color pallets and silhouettes- the exception being Rusty, who shares similar design elements with Momma (though not quite the same colors). The are the main three racers the story revolves around, and they stand out accordingly.
The thing about the other costumes that interests me, however, is how despite the fact that the rest of the characters in the show are all different colors (with the exception of the Components, whose costumes denote them as a group unique to Electra), there are certain design elements used on the other engines, coaches, and freights that helps denote them as such.
The champion engines are the easiest example here- they all have identical costume elements, just done in different colors. All of them have fin-like hairstyles, and identical plating: shoulder pieces that when an actors hands are at their sides can stretch up to their ears, a rounded breastplate with the symbol of the engine in question, and two pieces for the legs.
Tumblr media
The coaches also have this- despite being a myriad of colors and having elements unique to their design, they are a couple through lines- namely a piece around the waist than fans out similar to a skirt, and padding on the shoulders (except for Pearl, but she's got other stuff going on there). They also have more form fitting pieces on their legs- similar more to regular pants or leggings, which makes the detail at the waist and the padding at the shoulders the widest parts of the silhouette.
Tumblr media
The freights also have a very similar construction of their costumes- oversized pants and large vests with shoulder plating, and then smaller pieces for the arms- they all very clearly do the same job, despite being different colors and with different patterns (Hydra is not an exception to this, but there are subtle differences signifying how he differs from the others- the plating on his arms is not as bulky as the others, the colors on his pants are inverted, and the vest comes down to his waist rather than stopping below his ribs, giving a smoother silhouette and less bulky appearance, to name a few examples).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, the Components- all trucks like the freight, but their main job in the show isn't what they carry- it's to make Electra look good. As such, they all very clearly fit Electra's aesthetic in a way that none of the other coaches or freight fit the other engines- complementary silver and white to their blue and silver, with the only personalization their belts and the shape of the protrusions from their plating. (They aren't the focus of the next picture but I love it too much not to put here in some fashion.)
Tumblr media
All of this is deliberate attention to detail- as the majority of theatre-goers are not going to be intimately familiar with the characters, and the train types, and the roles, and the story, and- you get the idea. The shapes of a character's costume helps denote them into a group- if nothing else, an audience member can tell you "oh, that's an engine" or "that's freight". It also helps people sitting further away to track the action a little better- costume details and textures will become invisible at a distance, but bright colors, large shapes and consistent silhouettes help everyone have a good time.
So, if you didn't know anything about the musical, what could you tell me about the trains in this picture?

The whitefication of Electra, a well needed essay on Starlight Express' most unique character.
Just a little heads up before I do carry on, anything I say in this rant has absolutely nothing against the actors. At the end of the day they are just ordinary people like me and you so let's not make this a personal attack upon them, thank you. And also I am a person of colour so I do get a say in this argument :'P
I would also like to mention this will also be talking about on how much I dislike the Post 2018 Bochum revival, if you could even call it that. All photos used were taken from the Starlight Express wiki, if you would like credits please DM me.
To start this off, I only really noticed this when comparing Post 2018 Bochum (And Wembley, although I will cut them some slack) to pre 2018 and even the OLC of the show. I've never really liked Post 2018 Bochum, I must admit, I just think they screwed the show up horrifically but I'll get into that later. One thing I'd always complain about was of how Electra lost his colour, both with costume design and skintone, (I'm very funny I know.) I will be using the OLC costume and some of the actors portraying him from that time period and comparing them to Post 2018 Bochum, please do keep in mind this is not a personal attack to these actors. It is a simple way of comparing Electra's character then and now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, there is a pretty big difference. The one on the left, showcasing Post 2018 Bochum has Electra with most of the colour of his costume gone, going for a more monotone pallette to compensate with how we see the future now. Whilst the costume on the right is more out there and bold, striking reds and blues, in your face almost. It also represents on how the future was viewed in the 80s with it being more colourful and bright, a contrast to the dull we usually associate with it now. Although this doesn't have anything to do with the actual skintone of the character, I know I will get into that in a bit I promise, it still shows of how they've washed Electra's character from what he was originally. Electra's supposed to be out there, different, messing with societal norms, his character is fluid and that's what makes him, him. But now his character is more of a copy and paste of characters we've seen popping up more lately with new pieces of media. Now this is where we get into the skintone aspect.
Originally, Electra was a genderfluid, bisexual character. The name of his main song, AC/DC not just being a nod to Electrical currents but also a word/piece of slang used for bisexual people back in the 20th century. Now think about this for a bit longer, the year is 1984 and a new musical has just came out, it's about trains fighting over prejudice, and what do you have? A gender nonconfirming, proud bisexual, black character. This was groundbreaking really, although critics disagreed, Electra being black is extremely important. I mean, in the 80s the AIDS epidemic happened, a horrific outbreak which resulted in millions of deaths worldwide, and here they were, showcasing a proud bisexual character with no shame! Not to mention his original London cast actor, Jeffrey Daniels, is a black man.
Tumblr media
Queer characters have always been either non-existant or hardly mention that they are queer, let alone being black and queer. Can you name any characters off of the top of your head that are black and queer? Probably not, which is why Electra's character is so important. The Post 2018 Bochum Electra though is more of the average stereotype when it comes to queer people. A white drag queen who barely even mentions that they are of any kind, gender nonconfirming or queer. There is almost nothing in the show that hints that Electra is against the ideology of gender itself, I mean if we go back to the OLC, Electra boldly admits that he is the engine of the future, the future being more accepting of people like him, both his identity and himself as a whole, but now he's just some random white guy with almost nothing hinting about who he originally was.
Another thing to add, is that Electra in mostly the older productions of the show, has been played by black actors. e.g Jeffrey Daniels, Mykal Rand, David Michael Johnson, Koffi Missah, etc. And that was the norm, Electra was and is black! Up until the Post 2018 Bochun revival. Most of the actors are white, which also doesn't really help the case. And before anyone even thinks about using the excuse, "Oh but maybe they didn't have enough black actors to cast!" They managed to do it in the 80s. And that's saying something really, knowing the time period and the fact that ALW is a douchebag. Even some of the swings and covers of Electra from that time period were black! Not all of them, but some were! But now the only times we really see black Electra is when a swing or cover is on, which is quite unfortunate that it has to be like that, but you know 🤷‍♂️
Tumblr media
Also for the makeup of Electra's Broadway design, whoever drew it made Electra black, kind of showcasing that he is a black character.
But anyway,,, I really also do want to mention why I believe this may have happened. First off, most of Starlight Express' originality, strangeness, and whimsy have been dropped slowly over the years of the shows constant run. Costume designs changing over the years, characters coming and going, and the fact that the musical, in Germany anyway, is trying to be seen as less weird. I mean, ALW has said before that he hates Starlight, he's tried to sabotage the show multiple times, so it makes sense why he'd try and deweirdify the show. And having a genderless, genderfluid, bisexual and black electric train that is flashy and out there doesn't really seem normal. Or as normal as it gets as these are singing trains. Another thing to note is that the costumes are becoming more dull and bland, less colours, less whimsy and joy. Which is why I dont understand the slander against the new Wembley costumes as I believe that they bring back the strangeness of what Starlight truly was about. Anyway back to what I was saying,,, A perfect example of this is Pearl's costume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the left, Pearl's costume more resembles an actual Pearl, more creams and pearlescent whites. As pretty as the costume is, (I must admit I actually really like her post 2018 design), it lacks colour really. It's more dull and beige I guess, not really making her look like the Pearl we've known for around 3 decades. Whilst the one on the right it is still white I will give you that, but atleast it has the pink, and in newer productions pre 2018 her wig was much puffier and pinker, to be fair the lighting doesn't give her much justice. And something I have noticed is with characters called Pearl having pink in their design,,, like Pearl from Steven Universe and Pearl Houzuki from the splatoon franchise,,, anyway we are getting horrifically off topic.
And for my second reason on why I believe that ALW has made this change, mostly because of Electra, is because to put it short and simply. It is "woke". Having a genderfluid, black character who's a famous superstar and has his own little entourage that caters to his own needs and desires is something that nowadays is seen as woke. It's stupid, I know but it's ALW what do you expect 🤷‍♂️ What I'm trying to say is that he's messed up this musical pretty bad, if it was still the same without the post 2018 revival I believe it would be much better and Electra could still be a known black character in media.
Tumblr media
That mostly finishes it off,,, essay over although I do think I Could've delved a little deeper but I'm really tired lmfao,,, It's like 1AM where I am so I need sleep,,, and please for the love of God, do not say or do anything racist in the comments,, I do not want this post to be hosting a triple k meeting in the comments and replies,,, Also sorry if I sidetracked from my main point, but as a summary it's basically just, keep Electra as a black character and stop whitewashing him 💔

( @pizzalover346 - thanks for setting me off<3)
OKAY so basically people diss on the Wembley components sm ‘they look the same’ ‘no personality’ ‘idk who’s who!’ , but the thing is , Electra and their components ‘are the future’ , that is their leading thing ‘clear my track I am the future’ , and the thing is , back when starlight was first staged , modern in their eyes was BIGHT , FLASHY and in general in your face :exhibit a
Tumblr media
OG Electra was in your face , but now in the revival , basically what the designers said ‘well what is modern now??’ And that is stuff that is the same with tiny differences (millennial decor and housing [greys and bland stuff]) , and if we carry it to the components we see that so clearly , just the different shoulder pads and different lettering on their belts
Exhibit B
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I can’t find a full imagine of the others in one photo)
Anyways we see Volta and Killerwatt just have a separate name and shoulder work going on , like the others , and this is what ‘modern’ is ! And slade being around 30-40 (some sources say 35 but others say closer to 40) , so she is going to do the ‘millienial’ take on it , it looking the same with tiny unnoticeable differences , so when ppl say the components are made badly it hurts bc you have to see the PoV of the costume designers , bc they where trying to make a production that was already ‘modern’ with characters that where ‘they are the future’ !!!!
But personally I find the engines a lil hard to defend (I can 100% tho) bc they are the ‘champions’ and they should have more going on honestly , but I love them the same !!
(Sorry this rant was not a lot , I’m pretty tired rn and I know I can write more but I’ll do that later if you would like <33)

More StEx headcanons because I say so
But before I steam-roll into things I'd like to add that I've FINALLY come up with a name for the AU that houses all these headcanons/personal additions to the StEx story, "Starlight Express: Legacy Railway," since it incorporates both the original and modern productions as one continuing timeline with the Bochum cast serving as the first generation and Wembley serving as the second generation! (But only some are direct descendants of the first gen, not all)
With that disclosure out of the way ON TO MY SILLY TRAIN TAKES!!
• Bochum Electra is now called "Tricity" in this Au and is Trigender, going by he/her/they pronouns, because I couldn't decide what gender they'd be so I just went "fuck it all of them at once"
• After Caboose recovered from the final race incident he was sentenced to community service around the train yard to repent for his crimes of sabotage in order to ever be allowed to race again... which was a WHILE
• Tricity and Caboose were in a hot and cold situationship before Caboose brought home an orphaned trainlet and struggled SO HARD to raise her by himself that Tricity just took one look at his pathetic state and went "ooooh noooo...this idiot NEEDS my help... because without me this child won't have even an ounce of normalcy in her life" so they got train married and now she's putting the freights to shame with the sheer workload he carries on his shoulders to keep this family on the tracks
• that baby is Slick btw, in this Au she was only a year old when her parents were crashed into by another reckless speeding train that completely totaled all three of them, leaving Trainlet Slick with minor wounds because her parents took the burnt of the blow.
•Caboose was casually rolling by and out of curiosity came over to investigate only to find her at the crash site, and in a spontaneous moment of pity took her home and nursed her back to health, planning to hand her over to someone else once she got better...but during the nursing period he got REALLY attached to her and had ANOTHER spontaneous moment of "it's free real estate!!~"
• however Cb was woefully unprepared for parenthood, there is a reason he makes for a better "fresh out of jail uncle" than a father, despite loving Slick A LOT paternity didn't come naturally to him AT ALL like he thought it would and it didn't help that Slick wasn't an "easy baby" either.
• Slick was VERY clingy to CB and would get separation anxiety if he so much as left her line of sight which would lead to meltdowns. She was also very fussy and refused to sleep or nap, attempting to escape her crib MULTIPLE TIMES and SUCCEEDING in a few of them (a chip off the old block), and a very picky eater when it came to most foods that poor Caboose had his fair share of vegetable puree flung in his face.
AND THAT'S JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG WITH CB'S PARENTAL STRUGGLES-
But this post is getting long so I'll save the rest for another headcanons dump! Thank you once again for indulging my Dadboose drabbles.

Hi! I'd love to hear you yap about train biology/reproduction headcanons! 🚂💜
Just posted this on AO3 but here it is as well:
So as a starting point, Trainfolk are kind of like hermit crabs - they have a humanoid form (what we see in the musical) and a working form (typical rolling stock as we'd see trains in our world). Humanoid forms are roughly human-sized, though they tend to be a bit bigger on average (and engines, especially, would be larger/taller. Rusty is on the small side at just about 7 feet). They're basically able to fuse into their working forms through a process called melding (they sort of melt into it and reform afterwards). Trainlets generally don't meld until they're older, in their early teens usually, but they are technically capable of doing so at a younger age - a trainlet in distress might meld instinctively if there's an empty working form around. Never melding after puberty can start to have a bunch of negative effects, including stunting growth, shorter lifespan, etc. Trains can be distinguished as Engines, Freight or Coaches during pregnancy and generally need to meld with a matching working form. Freight and Coaches can adapt more easily to a different working form; it would take surgery for them to safely meld with an engine or vice versa. Melding for the first time also sets an Engine's fuel type, though this can also be changed via a conversion.
Working forms have three states - melded (trainfolk in there), empty (no trainfolk in there and never has been) and a third state (which I should probably come up with a name for) where a trainfolk has melded but is not currently in there. If a working form goes empty long enough, emergence can occur (it doesn't always). Basically a trainlet unmelds despite having not existed before that point. Usually, this happens with prototypes, but can also happen unintentionally or intentionally. Krupp and Purse are "setting things in motion" by having a security truck working form built with the hopes a trainlet will emerge down the line (Wembley Killerwatt). Pearl was an unintentional emergence and unusually late (at twelve years, when it usually happens around between the first and third year after the working form's build is complete). Emerged trainlets tend to look like at least one person that has an active hand in designing or building them - Electra does resemble both Wrenches despite not sharing any genetics with them.
This happens solely at the Starlight Express's whim (I have it in my mind that they're a real and very active god) but there are scientific hypotheses to the mechanics of it that are yet to be proven. There are also conspiracy theories (elaborate hoax, trainfolks are fey or aliens).
Emergence was more common before there was a substantial trainfolk population but now most trains are born via sexual reproduction. Trains are usually born with one set of reproductive organs or the other (intersex individuals are also possible). Melding allows more fluidity in their humanoid forms though, so a train could replace/grow the other set if they wanted to, but this isn't a super common occurrence. Multiple births tend to be rarer as well and there's no recorded instance of a double emergence from a working form. Wrench is also right about embryonic diapause - basically if conditions aren't optimal for a new trainlet to be born (not enough food/resources, a particularly large/dense population of other trainfolk around) the pregnancy is put on hold until they improve.
Feel free to ask me follow up questions, it's helpful and I will continue to yap :D

JUDGING THE MAIN 3 AC/DC VERSIONS BECAUSE I LISTEN TO ALL 3 RELIGIOUSLY ( ╹▽╹ )
Hello I love AC/DC a lot like as in I've been listening to all 3 versions on Spotify waay too much. Not counting the original version from that concept album. Just the 84 album, the new starlight express, and starlight express Wembley! Since I'm sure most people can agree those are the " main " 3. But if anybody wants to know my opinion on any other ones I'm willing to share! ( Like the Bochum album or the Japan/Australia )
1984 ALBUM
Okay so like. This is probably the one I've technically listened to the most. I love this version a LOT and I think it definitely has the most interesting history to it because of Jeffery Daniel and his shenanigans. Plus the background vocals r WILD. And the Vocal effects are delightful and not painful like Electra vocal effects can be. ( Live Bochum.. woah ) And I think I really like the " I am a computer ' line a lot. And I wish it wasn't removed! But I will say the weakest point in the song is the original component introduction since when this was written they didn't have names. And I kind of prefer if they have names and introduce themselves or atleast SHOW some personality. Even if purse rolling his R's is peak. Overall, amazing!
THE NEW STARLIGHT EXPRESS
Okay so uh this version of the song is what introduced me to StEx because I was crazy into cats and obviously I learned of the show through this song because of John partridge- who definitely sang the song well despite his erm. Totally amazing look for the show !!! Although now he's no longer the only " bald " Electra ( THEY ARE ALL BALD LMAO ) I think his song has the best components intro and It definitely has the most personality with the dialogue. The moaning is. Well I would say unique but it's not. It's like a staple LMAO but still it's definitely making this song harder to play for family. And the Vocal effects are HORRENDOUS LMAO! but I enjoy this version a lot despite how 90's and weird and loud it is.
WEMBLEY ALBUM
Wembley. Oh Wembley. Okay so I only like two total songs really from this album because I don't care for the sound mixing. Makes me really sick and anxious some of em. But I will say I was not disappointed by my favorite song! I absolutely love the volume of the song+voice and the effects aren't bad! The vocal effects remind me a lot of the live shows, and I think it sounds amazing for the vibe they were going for! ( Fortunately for this version, choreography doesn't affect my opinion. ) And I actually listen to this version more than I do the new version! My biggest problem is that the components definitely lost a lot of their personality from the New starlight version. And I usually actually skip this song's opening...
I LOVE THIS SONG !!!

Out of curiosity, which parts of the Wembley revival do you like?
Good question! It's quite hard to pin down... I like quite a lot of what they were trying to do, but I don't think the results are as good as they could be, in terms of telling a cohesive story.
First up, the cast are awesome - talented, passionate, enthusiastic. I may have issues with the direction, but the cast are doing their job amazingly.
I like that they dropped the "National" Engines. While I like the concept of Control being a trainspotter kid who's named the toys after fastest engines in the real world, the Creative Team have shown they're not capable of coming up with non-offensive archetypes. Coco Chanel was *LITERALLY* a Nazi... and she's the model for the "improved" French engine? Brexit is just a joke?? Better to keep the ensemble engines in a fantasy world.
Someone suggested that they could be Zodiac Engines - would be fantastic to give the performers *something* to work with in terms of characters and identity. I don't believe in Astrology at all, but the zodiac signs are factual, and "Red Taurus" could play on being a "typical Taurus" personality, like the way Cats have "three words" to define the character.
I like that they tried to give Pearl more agency - but the attempt was just not thought through. Giving Control the "funny" line of "if you don't decide, I'll decide for you" absolutely breaks her character arc - how can she regret the decisions she didn't make? Really there's no way to have Pearl be a logical, thoughtful character while she sings "Make Up My Heart" - that song defines her as being driven by her feelings, not her brain.
I like that they experimented with changing genders around - but the end result doesn't work for me. The world is painfully lacking in good father figure role models, and losing Poppa loses far more than is gained by having a Mama figure. And Female Greaseball - the cast being amazing make it super fun - but from a story telling angle we lose the Toxic Masculinity bad guy that the story needs as a villain!
Meanwhile we got a half-hearted non-binary representation for Electra - again not criticising Tom Pigram, but if the character is non-binary, why are none of the covers for the role female? Realistically the answer is back to "Make Up My Heart", Pearl's convinced Electra is a "lover", while she's only racing with Greaseball for "Fun". Adding bisexual awakening for Pearl is too complicated, it seems.
They tried to tell two stories at once - the "All genders are equal" Utopia, but at the same time the "We're not gonna take it anymore!" women fighting back. Either would be good, but you can't have both at once and tell a cohesive story! I like that they've tried to get back to a story about racing and winning more than the high-school romance angles, but without fully committing to it, the story doesn't hang together.
Trying to find the positive angle for Hydra... again, fantastic performers make the weak material really fun! But the story doesn't hang together. Why do the other fuel trucks dislike Hydra? Why is he there if nobody uses Hydrogen? But it's neat to try to bring real world technology into the show... but I miss the much richer story with Dustin.
What else... the music sounds pretty awesome? I like the orchestrations, I like that there's nothing half-assed about the theatre, the merch, the advertising. They've fully committed to this show being gloriously ridiculous and nothing to be ashamed of! I just wish it was less "There's no story, so what?" and more "And there's a story to sweep you away underneath the shiny!"

My Starlight Express HUMAN! Au: World plus citizens. Part one
General: Racecity, USA takes the place of the train yard and it’s centered around the 50s-60s. Racecity is the home of the Racing National Championship with it’s reigning champion being from Racecity.
-Richard “Rusty” McCoy
Rusty is 23 and is from a very religious and old fashion family. He lives with his father, Poppa McCoy (A former campion.) His mother, Belle McCoy and his brothers Fredrick McCoy(Flat-top) and Dustin McCoy (Hopper.) He dreams of winning the Championship with his father’s old racing car but is often bullied by the others. He has a major crush on Pearl
-Pearl DuPont
She is 22 and new to town and is from a rich and prominent family. She is friends with Dinah, Di, Buffy and Ashley and is often seen at the disco downtown. She is sought after by a certain new-comer in the race to be his partner, despite her promise to Rusty to be his partner.
-Derek “Greaseball” Russell
He is 26 and is the reigning champion of the National Racing Championship. He is pretty arrogant and self-centered and is the fiancé of Dinah (not to be confused with Di who is his sister’s girlfriend.) For all of his faults he is supportive of his sister’s sexuality. He is the main bully of Rusty. He is extremely proud of his diesel car engine that he says is faster than lighting. Is often seen around his fiancé and his gang. Has been undefeated for 10 years
-Gale “Greasy” Russell
She is 15 and is the little sister of Greaseball and is the girlfriend to Di. She is just under the age of qualification for the Championship but plans on playing in it next year. Her legal guardian is Greaseball and lives with him. She, like her brother is arrogant and self-centered. Works at the auto shop for some extra spending money (totally not because there’s a cute waitress at the dinner next door.)
-Dinah Campbell
She is 24 and is the fiancé to Greaseball. She works at the dinner and is a manager, she is the legal guardian of her distant cousin, Di. She is very loyal to Derek and has been his partner since she was 14 and he 16 (the partner qualifying age is 14.) Will often be seen at the disco. And will hang out with her fiancé and his gang (plus Gale)
-Dinah “Di” Humphrey
Di is 14 and is the girlfriend to Gale. She is nicknamed Di so that she doesn’t get mixed up with her Legal guardian and distance cousin who is also named Dinah. She works at the dinner where she is the newest waitress, but will often sneak out to see a certain champion’s little sister at the repair shop.
-Callum Benjamin “CB” Breaker
He is 24 and works for the McCoy’s at their scrap yard. And is a literal diagnosed psychopath who has unalived in the past sooo not the most qualified person for making sure breaks work properly. He has a type of obsession with Dinah (he’s been trying to sabotage Derek’s car so he can get with her.)
- Electra Futureman
22 and a newcomer to the Championship. He has more of a 80s aesthetic and look to him. His car is electric and is lighter than air making it more faster. Wants Pearl for his partner and travels with his own entourage (the components). Extremely full of himself and is a soar loser. Hostile towards Derek and Rusty.
What do y’all think? I decided to add both Bochum GB and Dinah and Wembley GB and Dinah because I really couldn’t decide. And I used a random name generator for both GB’s human names and used the first letter of the rest of the train’s names for the rest of it. More is to come!
Next part will be the rest of the freight trains and the coaches.
