What I think is so important to learning how to truly appreciate life is learning how to appreciate the creatures and things we've categorized as "disgusting" or "gross."
When I learned to appreciate wasps, I realized how much they just... don't really care about anything, and they're not trying to be an asshole because they're uniquely cruel. If they have any wants, it is to live. Why would I punish that when I also want to live?
This isn't to say you need to fall in love with the creepy crawlies that stalk this world or to love what you cannot, but to recognize that in their arrangement of atoms, they are trying to persevere, and in the end... aren't we all?
#positivity#bugs tw#this is why i think science is a love language btw#learning to love and appreciate through study is still love and appreciation#i've always been fine with bugs which might make this ring hollow to somebody with a phobia#and this isn't saying that people who are phobic of bugs are Evil or dumb (quite the opposite- humans are Good at fearing things)#what this is saying is find something you don't appreciate and learn about why you should appreciate it - for whatever reason#i learned to stop being neutral about bugs when i learned how cool they are - how they live!#i stopped being neutral about this planet when i learned how ancient it is!#i stopped being neutral about humans when i learned about how we lived and survived and loved!#i stopped being neutral about these things because i started to love them because i saw just how intricate EVERYTHING is#when you learn to see things through an appreciative lens you sometimes direct that viewpoint inward#so now instead of viewing myself as outside the universe i see myself and every little bug as PART of the universe#i stopped believing that i almost... wasn't worthy of being Part of Nature when i realized just how big everything is in the scale of it al#you should see my google searches omfg#everything is an argument and boy does this world have the ability to argue so well

im just gonna be honest gang obviously its gonna be easy for you to say youre in love with a character and theyre an angel when anytime they do something you don't like you brush it off as out of character
#bad writing is still canon unfortunately#the place where i absolutely draw the line is gallavich being verse don't fucking piss me off @shameless writers#unfortunately your fav characters did do and say those bad things..... and to ignore that is too fundamentally misunderstand their character#how can you love a person when you choose to be blind to who they are </3#this isn't directed toward anybody y'all are just being very dramatic lately and really i think we should remember that tv shows aren't real#i can recognize when someone is caused by bad writing but i still have to accept that it's a real thing that happened#like. do i find shameless entertaining? YES! is it well written? FUCK NO#it's actually fundamentally a bad show in many ways. but that's WHY i enjoy discussing it#it's why my hyperfixation hasn't died down. because theres just SO MUCH to pick apart and interpret and discuss!#it's actually so bad at times i blocked it out of my memory!#but if i believe something isn't canon or *shouldn't be canon* (HUGE difference between those 2 things)#then i should explain why i think that. and i also need to accept that others disagree#but if you say everything you don't like is just ooc bad writing and therefore not real to canon then#....lol what are you even doing here#like. we should be rallying against the writers for being actively racist homophobic transphobic fatphobic ableist etc#yet we're sitting here with our thumbs up our asses fighting about which character fanclub is the most oppressed#WHO CARESSSSS JOHN WELLS DOESN'T CARE ABOUT US IT TRULY ISN'T WORTH WASTING YOUR BREATH OVER#i just want to read about 2 toxic kinky boys kissing idk#let me say this tho! hardcore fiona stans you gotta be the most out of touch people on planet earth!#okay goodnight everypony#wall of text in the tags#a.txt

If Entrapta's character is like a feral shonen protagonist (Goku or Luffy) became a scientist instead of a fighter, then what is her opposite?
What character in fiction is like if a calculated mad scientist type (think Princess Bubblegum or Bulma) became a fighter instead?
#not just a tactical fighter like sasuke#im talking someone who does shonen battles as if they are a mad scientist#but they cant just be a scientist who also does battles they have to be all about fighting#its difficult because fighting can itself be a science such as with alchemy#maybe some of the characters from my hero academia or fullmetal alchemist can qualify#anyway the best direct example i can think of is the sherlock holmes DISCOMBOBULATE scene but it doesnt count#because sherlock holmes is also a scientist in that series#is... is usopp a scientist??? does he qualify as a scientist????#usopp might be divorced enough from being an actual scientist to qualify#his calling was science and technology but he foolishly decided to be a warrior of the sea instead#hes not quite what im looking for though#i bet theres a lot of villains like this though because villains always do insane shit#like sepiroth using maths to pull a meteor to destroy the planet#see thats the kind of shit i want

Hi GT! Any thoughts on GRRM's (now deleted 👀) blog post about HOTD? Both in terms of content and authorial conduct?
My first reaction was some combination of sympathy and cringe. I can see where his frustrations would arise — especially if he's correct that Ryan Condal intended Helaena to kill herself "for no reason," although I doubt that's the whole story (most of the coming seasons haven't been written yet). GRRM was burned badly by the ending of GOT, which is why he's harping so much on the (to be honest, pretty minor) removal of a child who really has no role in the source material except to be the sacrificial lamb prompting Helaena's suicide. He can repeat the words "butterfly effect" until he's blue in the face, but that still won't actually make Maelor into a major character, and it still won't explain why changing Helaena's arc is necessarily a bad thing for the story the show's telling. Helaena in the books is a very happy person whose death by suicide would be uncharacteristic unless prompted by a slew of gruesome personal tragedies. Helaena in the show is much more melancholy and withdrawn, and the audience doesn't need to see (another) one of her children brutally slaughtered in order to believe that she might pull a Tommen, especially since we don't know what the HOTD team are actually planning for her. Getting pissy about cutting Maelor is like finding out someone's replaced all the furniture in your living room — while you watched — and complaining that the upholstery's the wrong color. My brother in Christ, it's a different chair.
Apart from that, I recently saw one blogger argue persuasively that the choice to eliminate Maelor was not just efficient, but a defensible and deliberate creative decision: whether George realizes it or not, removing Maelor puts Aegon in the same situation his father Viserys was before his marriage to Alicent, where his only choices of heir are his daughter (Rhaenyra/Jahaera) or his brother (Daemon/Aemond), the latter of whom has recently proved himself an untrustworthy and outright dangerous candidate (the King of the Stepstones arc in Daemon's case, and the assassination attempt from Aemond). This traps Aegon, because the only laws supporting him as king require that he pass over Jahaera and place his regicidal brother — who has already tried to kill him once, probably having realized this fact — directly in the line of succession. And I'm pretty sure the show is intentionally going for this, because they make a point of telling us that Aegon can't have more children, so unlike Viserys, he can't get out of this by having more sons. Is this necessarily more compelling than the Maelor/Helaena guilt storyline? No, but we don't know if that storyline would have been compelling either. The success or failure of a narrative decision is almost totally in the execution, and HOTD is, crucially, not finished executing yet.
Siloing the question of the post's merits, it's also incredibly unprofessional for one of the most successful authors in history to start publicly beating up on a writer's room that he's supposedly collaborating with. Like, frankly, I don't care what Ryan Condal said. I don't care if he said he was going to kill off half the cast in S3E1 and turn the show into an isekai about his self-insert avatar falling in love with Rhaenyra. You work that shit out in the writer's room, or, if need be, the negotiating table, and not by dumping on the guy's creative decisions on a platform where the core of the show's fanbase hangs on your every word (most of them in the hope that you've announced the completion of the book you're supposed to be writing). It's catty, it's spiteful, and, judging by the content of the post itself, grossly disproportionate to the scale of the creative conflict at play. If I were an industry creative, I would have serious reservations about working with Martin after this, and the level of poor behavior on display should be evident by the fact that any author whose IP wasn't making HBO a bajillion zillion dollars would have been rightfully shitcanned for doing something like this.
If I sound angry at him, I'm not; I think he's just an old guy who's been told by lots of people that he's good enough to be above the rules, and he's consequently forgotten some of the industry etiquette. I'm also, frankly, a little contemptuous, mostly because most creatives I know would give all the fingers of their writing-hand to have the opportunities that George does, and would conduct themselves with significantly more grace and generosity for their collaborators even if they did disagree on adaptational differences.
#spoilers#i guess my thought reading the post was: why am I reading this?#these are find and valid complaints for someone to have if you're a purist but#what is the point of projecting this to every fan on the planet?#how serious do your creative disagreements have to be for you - the author - to feel this powerless?#I dunno. I'm old school. Work it out in the back room buddy. Put your dukes up if you have to#but you don't publicly shit on your collaborators' work unless you really intend to nuke the relationship#and that's just not something I would. personally. want to do. with the guy directing an ongoing adaptation of my work#[old man voice] this is what we used to have GROUP CHATS FOR

im watching a danish 1918 silent film called "himmelskibet" (the sky ship/spaceship) and it's interesting from several perspectives
for one, i enjoy the idea that these people have the notion of going to space and build a spaceship (an incredibly charming spaceship) in 2 years and it works! lifts ve-e-e-e-r-y slowly out of the atmosphere over the course of several days
for two, they're going to mars. which in 1918 reads differently im sure, than in 2024 and the rich colonialism wet dream -- also because in this movie mars is in fact populated, so it's actually not colonialist in the way it might have been x amount of years later in space-exploration cinema and the martians are depicted as being far more civilised (and also more... back-to-the-earth, we'll get to all of That) than earthlings, which is interesting
for three, they build the spaceship and point it towards mars, but don't have the tools to gauge how long it'll take to actually get there -- they calculate a presumed date before they leave, but whilst on the spaceship just have no idea where they are? this isn't deep, it's just funny to me
point the fourth. mars is populated. it's populated by a bunch of very human-looking aliens, because it's 1918 and the only difference between us and aliens is that the aliens are fruitarian hippies who all wear long robes (yeah, i can buy that) who have overcome everything bad that humanity currently is. the message is a hopeful one, with the lead martian saying "what we are, you will become"
the martian society is presented as a utopia. they're fruitarians, they've got no crime, no violence, and in what feels like some of the most long-lasting of political ideas, when the astronauts bring violence with them, they are made to think about it, but not punished (and there's some christian repent vibes to it, but it's not too egregious as to not work as concept -- the movie as a whole is very christian in feel though) and the protagonist considers how evil it is to throw people into prisons on earth. there's also a whole thing about embracing/celebrating death, rather than fearing it, which i wanna roll around in my head for a bit
but... the film tries very hard to juxtapose this utopian ideal with earth, however can't figure out how to make that work in imagery, or even put its finger on what is actually wrong with earth society that violence abounds in the first place (you'd think there might be some wwi imagery in there, but no, not a one -- its way of "showing violence" is random young well-dressed people on the street assaulting an elderly man and laughing, or smoking and dancing, or implied sex before marriage...)
all the scientists/leaders on mars are men, while the women... idk, frolic in beautiful dresses (there are a couple of interesting women in this, but they're not The Thinkers, they're The Feelers). they're all white and christian (if, danish christians rather than american christians). they're all thin and able-bodied and "beautiful." there's a scene where the women dance "a chastity dance." it begs the eternal question of "wait is this actually portraying a white supremacist eugenics cult?" WHICH is not what the movie wants to say, it very much wants to say something about anti-violence idealism as the future for humanity, it's like. got its heart in the right place, even if the final messaging is "we take this woman from a higher culture and within her lie the seeds for a superior earth," which hmm.. yeah. ive. ive heard things like that said before. not about a martian
it's interesting what kind of shorthand we have for storytelling. how the people making this movie undoubtedly were trying to think of the most visually effective way of conveying utopia, and how that imagery is mainly used today to make a viewer go "uh oh" to the extent that i almost briefly wondered if there was going to be another shoe about to drop, even though the movie hadn't been going in that direction at all
very much enjoyed it on the whole though. a moment in time. a very very early scifi film. ye olde danish text
And the most important thing.
Behold A Spaceship:
#himmelskibet#cinema#movies#danish cinema#scifi#science fiction#theres a part two to this movie where the man who stayed behind discovers that the superior martians have been cannibalising#all the sibling species on the planet or smthn#different tone to what the original conveys but hey#really a curio for 1918 you'd really think there might be some direct politics related to wwi but it just doesn't feel like it did#i'd say maybe it wanted to be escapism but then why be about this subject matter yaknow?#could be it landed more directly in 1918 regardless ofc

Star Trek: the future is kinda sorta utopian. Like it’s now Mostly Not Bad and people are Usually Good
Me, gleefully making ocs: so this is a whole multi-planetary faction of primarily clone cyborgs who are just warhammer 40k for cowards (read: the cover of a metal album but a whole society) and this is a planet of human colonists that got shunted back in time and way across space who’ve devolved into mad max shit and these two are mistreated orphans who become best friends and basically run a criminal organization just out of reach of the primary political powers and this—
#star trek hell#I’m sorry I have the edgelord gene I can’t help it#but also LOVE taking people who GENUINELY CARE ABOUT ETHICS like Picard Kirk spock etc and Subjecting Them to Situations#like yeah murder is Bad but what if you’re in a hyper lawless place and it’s the only way to keep safe or build order?#can you stand by the prime directive if you’re looking at Planet Mad Max and seeing how HORRIFIC it is?#the federation pisses itself over shit like genetic augmentation so how about a whole race of genetically enhanced cyborgs built as an army?#who have now taken total control of the area the ppl who made them were fighting over and are basically their own species now#and WANT to engage with the federation peacefully as they try to shift to like reterraforming their devastated planets?#like they’re basically the borg but with personal autonomy and all these things and gross out the feds are normal to them#and also they’re imperium of man inspired so like… do we really wanna piss off the cybermen#with war ships like 10 times the size of our biggest ship?????#like idk I’m always prone to increasing the grimdark content even when it’s not that kinda show (especially then)#but also I love challenging ppl who get all philosophical about shit to like stick to those beliefs when confronted with Real Yikesy Freaks

Oh god is my fnafhs phase coming back. I have an AU Idea and it's very magical girl-y help (a Lil summary in the tags)
#basically y'know lily abby maggie toddy and mai? all the best girls? (ok except Abby maybe but I'll save her dw)#ok now imagine them as teen magical girls#a normal 2000's/2010's bff group who also kick ass in pretty dresses#now imagine mai and puppet being magical beings from another planet#kinda like the winx club characters that look completely human but they're fairies n stuff? there's a reason why the twins can look like-#Normal humans tho: their true form is a being like Maipett. they're two maipetts#BUT they can shapeshift to look just like any living beings they see#so they can very easily blend in with humans#now what are these beings? basically they're magical dudes that control the “Shadows”. evil spirits that can destroy life in pretty much-#any abitated planet in irreversible ways#one day some shadows breached from the maipetts control and directed themselves to earth as it was the closest living planet#so mai and Charlie as the strongest most able shadowseekers (group of specialized Maipetts with the mission to bring back Shadows to-#security in case of breaching) got a mission to go to earth find the shadows and bring them back. even destroy them if necessary#now what's the group mentioned earlier have to do with all this?#after saving lily from a shadow attack her and mai become “friends” (keep in mind Mai doesn't really know what friends even are)#but with time they do become very close#and since the shadows are never way too far from each other meaning that other shadows might be hiding in the same town Mai wanted to keep-#Lily safe. so she gave her a tiny rock that contains Maipett powers (Mai likes to keep them on her belt for decoration) and showed her-#basic attacks to at least keep Lily safe in case she gets attacked by a shadow and Mai happens to not be there#after a while tho Abby (Lily's roommate and childhood friend) finds out about her friends' powers and she thinks it's soo cool and things#but Lily and Mai especially aren't so cool about it cus pretty much all the situation is supposed to be a secret#so they and abby make a promise: Abby gets a magical gem and of course some lessons how to use it's powers and she keeps the secret#Abby agrees and she joins the group (that remains unnamed until the others join)#Toddy and Maggi were found by Charlie in the meantime. Charlie saved them both from a shadow attack and so Mai decided to give them-#magical rocks aswell with the deal that Charlie was the one to teach them about their powers this time#Toddy decides to name the group “The Shadowseekers” to reference mai and Charlie's literal job#and yeah they go on adventures around the city™ and sorroundings beating shadow's ass and learning to use their powers and work together#while also keeping the secret#idk it came up to me like some minutes ago#fnafhs

#we’re all going to be ok#ive been on the phone for 1 hour 20 minutes and everything is going to be ok#ezra’s real life rambles#and just to slightly derail when i say i love everything this includes myself which makes me very happy#can’t think of the good words but like i’m literally makoto nijima persona 5 royal when she goes something along the lines of#i want to be able to look at the most horrible parts of myself and still be able to say so what#hhbhhhhhbbhhhhhh#i need there to be time travel and give myself like two years ago a hug. it’s all going to be ok look at me now. bad things happen#but it isn’t the end and everything keeps going and there are more good days than there are bad days and the bad days are manageable#i dunno i think i’m also just sentimental cause i get like this at this time of year#anyway yeah all of the peace and love on planet earth#<3#(this is sorta mainly directed at you (unless the person reading this isn’t my girlfriend) but also at everyone and myself
