Favourite Starkid musicals
Since I’ve seen others do it as well, and because I love Starkid, AND because I love lists.
The Potter Musical Triology Alright, I know that these are 3 different musicals, but for the sake of it, I’m going to group them together. I know, I know, that individually one is better than the other (AVPS #1 FUCK YEAH) and that other musicals might be better than one of these three, but MAN. This is this the best damn musical series ever and to this day, I still mainly associate Starkid with this series because my love for it is so big and I fear that one day, people will forget these masterpieces. They’ve become so important to me as a Harry Potter fan and a musical fan. With this triology, Starkid shaped a part of the HP fandom and of course did it in true Starkid style with a great musical with amazing songs and well-placed humour. (”What would Zac Efron say in times like this? We’re all in this togeeeether!”)
Starship This is the musical that not only expanded my view of Starkid, but also made me a full-blown musical fan. For the first three years, I was a huge Starkid fan without having seen any of their stuff apart from the Potter Musical Triology (I know, right?) and even though it took me three unnecessary years, I “branched out” by watching this and I discovered my love for musicals in general. The story is great, the songs are great, and the puppets are well-done. Also, DAMN THAT G.L.E.E!
Trail to Oregon This is where it got tricky already, because I was this close to putting Firebringer here. But after all, I just liked TTO way more. Not only was this the first interactive Starkid musical, but it also handles a family dynamic in a comedic, but still very serious and relatable way. Its running gags, like Craphole wanting to skinny dip, to McDoon’s “the Bandit King” sign, aren’t tiresome and the catchy music adds something to the amazing story.
Firebringer HECK YEAH WLW STONE AGE LADIES. Apart from the Potter Musical Triology, I’ve never seen a Starkid show get this much attention (good shit). This musical feels completely different from any Starkid work and not only because it was the first female lead in a musical (kinda still judging you on that one, Starkid), but mostly because of the music. The music style and the instruments are so different from the other shows and together with its harmonising it is beautiful. Add a great story to it and a lot of good ole Starkid humour, and voila.
Twisted A Disney/Wicked crossover based musical? Good shit right there. Starkid revived and added three new members who really shone in this musical. Disney is currently remaking their stories from the villains POV in a live-acting movie, but why watch that when you can have Ja’far’s story in Twisted. It shines a comedic, but also a sad light on a classy villain and the music is a clever play on Disney’s music.
Holy Musical B@man There’s a big difference in the “amount of me liking” the musical between Twisted and HMB. The first five (or seven) I actually LOVE, but now we go to the like category. Maybe it’s because I was never really into Batman? Also, the music and jokes didn’t get me as much as the others. That being said, it is still a fun musical to watch and Chris as Alfred is the best. And sure, I even use quotes like “Look Batman, it’s a dog!” “Quick, Robin, pet him!” in real life, but maybe I need to watch Batman first. Although I love the part where Superman pretends to be with Snoop Dogg when Obama calls a lot.
Me and My Dick Here’s the thing: I am asexual and definitely not comfortable with most of what it going on here. I can’t even listen to the full soundtrack because I’d rather stick to the more PG/PG-13 songs like Ready to Go, Listen To Your Heart, and Even Though. But I honestly think if I were comfortable with it, it’d be higer in the list, because the comedy is still on point and the story is great and has a nice morale. That is why I am still doubting wherever I should watch it for a second time or not. Also, the thought of someone being best friends with his dick is quite funny. Remember when Hollywood tried to rip it off? Jeez, I wonder what happened to that movie.
ANI: A Parody And we’ve come to the worst of the best. Just like HMB, I think the main reason is that I simply never took the time to watch Star Wars. Maybe Alex will love it, but I just... meh... And that’s not it. I simply did not like Act 1. Not because of the music. Sure, I was disappointed to see that the band would be singing, but hey, TalkFine is a great band and they wrote good music for it. And yeah, it did have moments that needed my emotional investment, but this is also the first and only musical I considered turning off while watching, because Act 1 bored me to death. Act 2 made me at least enjoy myself, and overall it was still a good musical, but also overall quite disappointing. (Not because of the acting work or anything because holy shit, Chris Allen!)
