Idk if this is just me, but does it seem like the Hunger Games movies left out most of the stuff about food in general?
Maybe I just noticed this because in my first read I was worried that all of them were cannibals, but like… in the movies it seems like they were never actually that hungry. Like, we know that Katniss and Gale have to hunt, and that Peeta gave Katniss the bread, but a lot of the details about just how hungry they were to get to those choices were just… gone. And when they’re in the Capitol on the Victory Tour, they mention the vomit-inducer but it was more of an offhand thing. What got me especially though is that in Mockingjay Pt. 2, their time with Tigris appears to be much shorter, but also… she doesn’t feed them! And from what I remember that was fairly significant in the books, especially considering the position they were in.
In the books, hunger was the driving force of the vast majority of decisions they made. Katniss literally spent a good chunk of her first games desperately searching for water—Haymitch rewarded their performances with food—Katniss described every single thing she eats and primarily characterizes new places based on their food (the Capitol and District 13 especially). TBOSAS supports this even further when you see how even people in the Capitol were starving in the aftermath of the war—that’s why sponsors were added to the game!
I just—the whole series is literally about starvation and what it means to be human, but the movies just focused on love and war.

Personally I think when Snow opened his eyes in the hereafter it would be in the meadow of the Covey house with Lucy Gray and her goat just out of reach, and he would call her name and she wouldn't turn. He'd walk and he still couldn't reach her. There were mockingjays in the sky chirping endlessly, and he ran and screamed and ran and screamed and Lucy Gray still wouldn't turn. She was there, at peace and on her own, humming her meadow song. Completely unaware of him as he was imprisoned in this most peaceful hell, agonizing for the control and love that was no longer his.

watching cariolanus devolve as a person knowing he is fully capable of love and compassion but craves control and comfort above all else and will ultimately choose the option that will optimize his chances of being in control and living the most comfortable life, even if that means consciously and deliberately giving up on love so that there is no chance he will ever falter again. cut out that emotion from the root, even though at that point in time he has no real desire to seek out the highest position of power. he mostly just wants to be in control of his life
watching the brainwashing run soooo deep that even being out in the districts doesn’t help him see the rebels as people. if anything, it reinforces his fascist upbringing that everyone outside of the capitol is subhuman and must be controlled—and that too only by the capitol. every attempt at appealing to his humanity fails because he needs order in the world, and he’s been taught from a very young age what order should look like. he only has one understanding of the way things should be
all of it being a social commentary and critique of the american government and watching the state of the world currently as people dance around the fascist ideas they have and are currently being bombarded with, many of them even knowing to some extent that it is happening but they’d rather not do anything to disturb their complacency so going along with the status quo it is. suzanne collins you never miss a beat

the worst thing tbsoas film did was changing absolutely everything and i mean everything about sejanus.
that kid was supposed to be QUIET! eaten alive by guilt! but not eloquent enough to try and get people on his side for it! he was an absolute loner but not in the "i hate you all and im cool and sassy and show people up in a way the audience 1:1 agrees with (basically just spelling out the moral counter argument against the games)"-way, in the "i know i don't belong here and i have imposter syndrome because none of the capitol folks accept me and my family and they let us know directly and in no uncertain terms all day every day and i also don't want to be here i wish we'd never left 2".
and the REAL tragedy of sejanus plinth is this: that his moral compass puts him off everyone at the capitol bc they're all snakes and he knows it - BUT he thinks that the one person who's the biggest snake of them all is good. he's naive and dumb and stupid and trusting, and snow feeds on his affection and attention the way you'd pet a kicked puppy on the head and feel good about yourself.
and the snow kicks the puppy to death and is all pikachu meme abt it.

Every time someone said we didn't understand the characters because we only see the movie and we need to read the book... Well lol, guess what, I read the book and now I am more sure then Lucy Gray was a manipulator, that Sejanus was dumb, and that Coryo was not born evil (he is unhinged and he become evil later, but not at the start and no even until the very end of the book).

trick or treat!!
Dude, friendo, why would you send me this on the 31st? I suck at actually answering asks in a timely manner I'm sorry 😭
Anyway since I already knew I'd be late I took uhm- half a month to finish this thing! Because in typical me fashion I started an idea and refused to give it up because I don't have any other ideas. And it sucks. But I tried. So here have a figure that vaguely resembles Coryo being very cross he is forced to wear a vampire costume and a witch’s hat

Just saw someone complaining that the ending of Ballad and Songbirds and Snakes made no sense and came out of nowhere because Snow, for no reason, "decides to be an evil douche instead of the insightful and empathetic person he was" for the rest of the book.
Genuinely gobsmacked. Maybe we are in a crisis of media literacy and reading comprehension. I need to go lie down. I don't know what to do with myself. I am genuinely confuddled. I... can't.

If I had a nickel for... Part 2.
If I had a nickel for every prequel having a doomed by narrative promising student in the capital city academy who is about to graduate and just ends up in the middle of plotting and power struggle, consequent royal clusterfucking bloodbath with child soldiers and then is sent on a mission, where he would become a batshit insane monster, murder a ton of people and become the antagonist of the main trilogy... I would have two nickels, but how in the hell did it happen twice

I think one of the things that pisses me off about Snow is his superiority about dealing with hardship and suffering. Like yes, he’s got ptsd from the war, he knows what it is to be hungry, his family lost their income and struggled because of it to the point of losing their house.
And it was more vague until the bit I just read, but he literally just had a paragraph about the difference between him and Twelve. How Twelve has clearly given up, they don’t care anymore, but a Snow pulls himself up by his bootstraps and has some decency, AND THEN straight up says “We pour so much money into the districts” until Sejanus is like “yeah bro into the industries FOR the Capitol, not the people. Not their housing.”
It’s like he cannot fathom that the Capitol did and does cause the districts’ suffering, especially the poorer ones like Twelve, and he admits he blames them for their situation. He does not separate his entirely different hardships from theirs, to him they are the same and he is better for overcoming them.
And I feel like that just. Stays his whole life. 60+ years later he meets Katniss who’s from the Seam and lost her dad to the mines and he’s almost like “ok? We went through the exact same thing, I don’t understand what your issue is.” It is infuriating because no asshole, one is oppression and dehumanisation and beating people down into submission as much as possible and the other an effect of war that you very much had opportunities to recover from, WHICH YOU TOOK, until you were straight up in charge and could see exactly where all that money was going and how the utter lack of everything was affecting districts like Twelve

I forgot to mention that I saw the trailer for the new the The Hunger Games movie when I went and saw Blue Beetle (the prequel, you know?) and it does look really good (even though at first I was unsure about it). I'm probably for sure going to see it when it comes out. Though this will be the first time that I haven't read the book first... unless I do end up reading the book between now and then.
#friends how do we feel about the 'the ballad of songbirds and snakes' novel?#because for me personally. and a lot of people i know... i honestly preferred the hunger games movies more than the books (even though you#have to love and appreciate the books. of course. because without them there would be no films)#is it the same with the prequel?#though i also know that many fans prefer the books and hate the movies: thinking the movies left out too much and that kind of thing#but yeah. since i DID prefer the movies. and think there's a good chance it might be the same way again. i'm thinking i might just watch th#movie first or maybe not even read the book at all#even though i'm usually of the mind of always reading the book. of course. and usually first#i think my reasons for preferring the movies are as follows... i really hated katniss in the books. i'm sorry. but i did. but seeing her#brought to life with the way jennifer lawrence played her really made me love her#also. people complain about some things the movies left out. and i definitely get that. to each their own#but i personally love the things the movies ADDED! that we didn't get to see since we're stuck in katniss' pov. that i think just bettered#the stories so much#and some (surely not all) of the things that were left out that people complained about i feel like aren't THAT needed?#like they didn't explain the avoxes#but i also feel like if you're smart you can clearly figure out what the capitol did to them#idk. this is just my opinion of course. anyone is free to disagree#but i say all as this as someone who isn't SUPER into the hunger games#i only read the books once. years ago. and i haven't seen the movies in a while. so i'm sure there are things i may have forgotten and migh#be getting wrong here#oh! another thing too is that i've seen people mention that they felt like suzanne collins' writing style with thg is almost script-like.#even though it's not a script of course#and that that might be another reason that i. and so many others prefer them as movies#because it was almost like she was writing the books TO be made into movies
