I wanna know what you think
Holy shit
Holy shit
(Spoilers under the cut)
It's semi-cliche, but it just makes it even better
I'm in love with it
I like how you (I assume you're the one who wrote it) kinda mixed a 'older' version of English in it. If you get what I mean
When akito said 'I'm gonna go for a run" I already knew shits about to go down
What I do want to say is
The grammar is missing something
Like, sometimes you forget to add periodts, there are few alinea's
Other than that I really like it

Behind the Scenes
This is a story that developed from a small peek into my brain whenever I write the stories you read into a thinkpiece about writing and posting fanfiction.
On AO3.
Ships: none (unless you wanna ship me with my keyboard lol)
Warnings: none, I suppose, but it does get a little down in the end, I was having a rough day when I wrote this, sorry.
~~~~~~~~~~
I sit on my chair before my laptop. I’m curled into myself as my fingers glide over the keyboard and my thoughts flow out of my fingertips onto the screen.
It isn’t all that late, just past midnight, but it’s already dark outside and in order to see the keys properly I have to turn on the lamp I have on my desk. With the light it’s kind of cozy here in my little nook of the world.
I look to the screen and try to make sense of my own words. I don’t have a fully fledged idea yet, but a vague idea that floated through my brain at some point during the day has inspired me enough to open a new document and start typing.
I now know how this story begins and I see where I am going and how it will end, but the question of how I get there sits heavily on my mind.
I stop typing for a moment and think. If I introduce this character now, it might set some other things in motion and that’ll be good for the plot, but I don’t know how to write that character at all and I’m afraid that if I do it wrong, people won’t like me or my story.
I sigh and realize I’ve started almost every new paragraph with the same word. I hate it when I do that. The story starts to feel repetitive and as a non native English speaker I want to prove that I have a bigger vocabulary than that.
How to proceed?
A synonym, maybe? But I’ll have to look that up and I don’t think there is a good synonym for I. Sighing again I scan the page and think. Maybe I could start with a verb to shake things up a bit or a question. No, not a question that would feel out of place here.
Now I’ve written a few paragraphs again, so I could use the word I used before, but since I used it so many times already I want a bit more space between now and the next time I use it. So a synonym it is, I guess, I think as I open my browser to look one up.
There is no synonym for I.
Goddammit, I think. Well, it’s no use now anyway. I’ve decided to write this story in the first person, despite knowing I’m horrible at it, and now I have to deal with the fact that I don’t have another word for I.
I start my next paragr- no that’s not right. Backspace, backspace. Moving on to the next- No, not that either. Backspace, backspace. I look at what I’ve written last and wonder why I’ve written something upon which I can’t, hmm, what’s a good word there?
I know I have a good word in Dutch ‘voortborduren’, but when I translate it, it gives me elaborate, which doesn’t fit in the sentence at all. Mentally groaning I recline in my chair as I try to think.
Maybe it’s the sentence itself? Lets see what did I write again? Oh yeah: I look at what I’ve written last and wonder why I’ve written something upon which I can’t- and then I need to find a word. Hm, funny, I don’t know how to go on by the sentence about not knowing how to go on.
‘I look at what I’ve written last and wonder why I’ve written something upon which I can’t’, I whisper it to myself in the hope the right word comes to mind.
First there is nothing, but then! Expand! Not perfect, but it fits, which is good enough for now, maybe when I proof read it a better word will come to me and I can use that.
So, expand. I wonder why I wrote something I can’t expand upon.
Fuck, I’ve spend so much time finding the right word that I have forgotten what I was talking, well writing, about in the first place. Softly swearing under my breath I scroll up and read what came before the sentence with the stupidly hard word to think off.
Ah yeah, it was about the other stupid thing, namely that I am writing this in the first person, which I still cannot do, no that skill has not come to me in the time it took to look up a word. What a pity.
But I have started the last few paragraphs with something other than I from time to time. That at least is something. Wait, should I add punctuation there? That, at least, is something. Looks better, but maybe that is just my love for commas talking. I mean, why write a boring sentence with a dot in the middle, which makes it short and doesn’t give you enough space to play with it, when you can also add unnecessary punctuation, so that you can play with the cadence of how something is read out loud or in someones mind?
Whoops, now that whole paragraph is long, if I want to make this story easy to read I’ll have to make this one shorter. Hmm, is this good? Yeah, probably. Enter.
Now, I’m suddenly wondering, if paragraph is even the right word. In Dutch the word is ‘alinea’ and the word ‘paragraaf’ also means chapter, but not really, only in a school book. It doesn’t really make sense, because you also have a chapter in a schoolbook and that’s divided in paragraphs and each paragraph has ‘alinea’s’
Aaand I’ve distracted myself by thinking about the differences between each language instead of looking up if paragraph is actually the right word and it means what I think it means.
I look it up on Google translate, not the most trustworthy source for sentences, but for lone words it’s alright.
It is the right word, along with indention, but I’m not really familiar with that word, although I can see where it comes from with the paragraphs creating indentions in the text. Still, I decide to stick with paragraphs, cause “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and I live by that.
Looking back to the clock in the corner of my screen I realize that I’ve now been writing this for 40 minutes. It isn’t all that long, but I don’t know where I’m going with this anymore. I had a point when I began and now I’ve forgotten it.
I stretch my arms, by pushing away my chair, leaning forward until my shoulders are at the same height of my desk is. My right shoulder cracks, it has always done that, but the sound snaps me out of my musings and makes me pay more attention to my surroundings.
It is raining outside and I hear people screaming. They sound happy, probably celebrating something and drinking, but I still wondered what they’re doing up so late (ignoring the fact that I am still awake too.)
Right, my word document. I was trying to remember what my point was. No wait, not remember, recall sounds better. I double click remember and replace it with recall: I was trying to recall what my point was.
Although I have found a nice sentences with the best word to describe the action, I still don’t know what comes next. I suddenly begin to doubt myself. Maybe this was a dumb idea. Maybe I’ve read this somewhere before and I am unconsciously copying someone. Maybe I should just delete this and move on to something else.
I mean, come on, who wants to read this? No one. I’m just going to post it, knowing that no one cares and no one will read it. People don’t go to AO3 for original works, you don’t, so why would anyone care about it? It’s going to get five hits tops, with maybe two kudos, three if you’re lucky.
And now I have accidentally switched to a second person perspective, can’t even stay consistent. Maybe if I play it off as an introspection or and internal dialogue no one will notice or think it’s an artistic choice.
Pff, artistic choice. You can hardly call what I’m doing artistic. It’s just fanfiction, a hobby. Yeah, I know that is still good and can be great, even amazing and artfully written, but this isn’t. I have a too direct writing style for that. I’ve only been getting English education for six years and it’ll take so much more practice until I ever reach that level.
I’ve gotten off track completely now. I faintly remember that this started out as a mock internal dialogue of what happens when I write a fanfic, but now it turned into a self deprecating shit parade.
I blink long and hard, trying to get my head back on track and write something better, or at least more consistent.
Realizing that in order to do that I should probably scroll up and read (lets be honest scan) how I started. I don’t have the energy for it, but I force myself to do it with a sigh.
Scroll, scroll, scroll.
Ah, yeah, I began with where I was and then that discussion about language and looking things up. Oh, but I’ve also reflected on what I’ve written before, well, before. Then it was about re-finding what I was doing after I had to look up a word and now it is desperately trying to remember what the actual fuck I was doing in an attempt to make something cohesive, but still. I decide to not do that again.
I still don’t know what my point was when I started this, but I’m making a new one up right now. I think I’m going to call the work ‘behind the scenes’ or ‘the thoughts of a writer’, since I have now decided that this is a way to get readers a peek behind the curtains.
As a reader, I can respect people so much for all the work they put into a story. And of course I’m not saying you can’t do that if you don’t write, no, that would be pretentious, but I do have more respect for them than before I started writing all those years ago.
It is really easy to forget that something you read in a few minutes has taken hours to write. This is not even 2k words long right now. I know I can read that in a few minutes, not even blinking and mostly forgetting, before moving on to the next story, but I have been writing almost nonstop for over an hour now.
I am lucky that I can usually keep the words flowing long enough to make some bullshit up that I can reason into a coherent story in the end, but that has taken practice. A lot of practice.
In order to become a good in writing a story you have to do it so many times and you won’t even notice you’ve gotten better until much later. I know this, because I recently went through all my works and made them better. Got all the typos out there, I fixed vague sentences and I made the lay out better. I also cringed a lot.
Well, I think I have to go with a ‘behind the scenes’ now, because I don’t think I can claim this is my internal monologue when I’m writing. Instead this has turned into a think piece about writing and appreciating it or something.
I don’t even know anymore.
I recall I had a point when I started this, probably thought it out and then my brain decided to throw it away and throw up this garbage instead. It is interesting, I suppose, but not at all what I was going for in the beginning.
Oh well, maybe I can fix it when I proof read it, because I am tired and I think I’m going to bed. I have half the mind to just fuck it and throw it on AO3 without glancing over my own words even once. It’s very tempting to leave others to deal with these honest words and pretend they aren’t mine, but I don’t.
However, I don’t think I will edit this that much, because it was nice to get some frustrations on, well not paper, but on screen. Just order my thoughts, you know?
It is hard to stay motivated when it seems that everyone around you is doing so much better than you. It is disheartening and it makes you want to stop.
I don’t.
I can’t.
Writing is what I do, it helps, it’s nice. I love writing and I don’t think I will stop loving it. But one of the reasons I love writing is because it can get the constant thoughts and ideas to stop swirling around in my head.
Today I needed it to stop, so that I could just go to sleep properly and I feel like this helped. It was honest and I feel better now. Tomorrow can come at me and I will face it like I did today. Maybe my last few fics weren’t to everyones taste and that’s okay, they were my taste and I love them and I am proud of them. For me that’s enough.
I would apologize for ranting, I usually do, but since you could stop at any time and leave, I don’t think I’m going to do that, what I am going to do, is thank you.
Thank you for reading this, despite the fact that it is not a fanfic. Thank you for allowing me to just dump all these thoughts on you. And thank you for being here and clicking it, your support, even if it is only an extra number by “hits”, means so incredibly much to me and I cannot put in to words how grateful I am that you are here.
Since it is now 01:18 and if I recall correctly it was 00:02 when I started, I think I am really going to stop now. Goodnight, or good-whatever time a day you’re reading this!
Goodbye :)
Incinerator
Even so, you, saying you are innocent Apt to throw a downcast look, carelessly, indifferent Line up a black color that shouldn't exist
Why did you threaten me? What made you glare at me? I question you, and in the end you left me Your opaque, turned and twisted words I blocked them from coming out any more
Tomorrow morning, we'll say goodbye under the promised fumes From the palms that I strongly, weakly squeezed back Ashes of void dance
From betrayal to hate and love One by one, from over my head, high in the sky Quickly melted into the heavens
It's a foolish question, but up to where is your unpainted face And from where is the face painted over? I asked directly for that answer, but then Blocked it from coming out anymore
The last morning is so foolish that not a single drop falls And yet, and yet, instead of understanding, The ashes of void are closer to resignation
Tomorrow morning, we'll say goodbye under the promised fumes From the palms that I strongly, weakly squeezed back Ashes of void dance
The last morning is so foolish that not a single drop falls And yet, and yet, instead of understanding, The ashes of void are closer to resignation
A drop fell down...
Incinerador
Aun así, tú, diciendo que eres inocente, propenso a lanzar una mirada desconsolada, sin cuidado, indiferente, alineas un color negro que no debería existir.
¿Por qué me amenazaste? ¿Qué te hizo fulminarme con la mirada? Te pregunto, y al final me dejaste con tus palabras opacas, retorcidas y perversas. Las bloqueé para que no volvieran a ser pronunciadas.
Mañana por la mañana, diremos adiós bajo los vapores prometidos. Desde las palmas de las manos que retorcía fuertemente, débilmente bailan cenizas de vacío.
De traición a odio y amor. Uno por uno, por encima de mi cabeza, elevados en el aire, se fundieron rápidamente en los cielos.
Es una pregunta tonta, pero ¿hasta dónde llega tu rostro desmaquillado y dónde empieza tu rostro pintado? Pregunté directamente por esa respuesta, pero entonces la bloqueé para que no volviera a ser pronunciada.
La última mañana es tan absurda que no cae ni una sola gota y aun así, aun así, en lugar de entender, las cenizas de vacío se acercan a la resignación.
Mañana por la mañana, diremos adiós bajo los vapores prometidos. Desde las palmas de las manos que retorcía fuertemente, débilmente bailan cenizas de vacío.
La última mañana es tan absurda que no cae ni una sola gota y aun así, aun así, en lugar de entender, las cenizas de vacío se acercan a la resignación.
Cayó una gota...
“The Amiga’s New Clothes” or an honest review of the new Amiga 1200 case.
Review from July 18th 2018
It is no secret that the original Commodore and ESCOM Amiga cases were made from a cheap type of plastic, called ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Isn‘t that a mouthful?)
Due to the chemicals used in ABS plastic, over the years it starts to yellow because it‘s not too UV-resistant. Which results in ugly looking Amigas!
There are of course a few good ways to get rid of it, or at least partially bring it back to it’s good old shiny gray.
But sometimes you also got cases that are broken, cracked or incomplete! It happens over the years… What you would then want is a new case.
Well, “A1200.net” has created exactly that! Brand new Amiga 1200 cases in multiple colors.
I won’t go too much into detail on how they came about, you can read all of that on their official website which is linked at the end of this review. And before I blabber on even more, let us have a look at the new case!
Tumblr media
As you can see I ordered mine in Black. Not only because it looks quite sleek, but also because I helped kick-starting their new Amiga Key-caps project so in the end it will be a black Amiga with red/black keys. Fancy!
The first “Pro” of this case has to be the sheer amount of options you got. You have mounting points for a Raspberry Pi, Keyrah v2, Lotharek Gotek card including its LCD display and many more. They are totally invisible from the outside if you don’t use them (the Lotharek LCD would be right above the AMIGA logo on the right of the case).
Furthermore the case feels very nice and sturdy! Not made of cheap plastic that would break any minute, but made of UV-resistant plastic that will not yellow ever! (Well, in this case, it won’t ever yellow...because it’s black. Heh, in this “case”...Get it? sigh)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A “Pro” is also the new trapdoor design. The creators simply made venting holes so an ACA1221 or other accelerator cards won’t run too hot! Quite genius and something that Commodore/ESCOM did not come up with. Huh!
Now for the “Meh” parts. There were several scratches on the case, even though it was brand new. I absolutely understand these things happen even when handled with care, but to me that does matter. Who knows if the manufacturers or the retailers are at fault, fact is that I expected a little more...polish from a case that costs 89€ (120€ with shipping to Germany from Spain).
Another “meh” is the screw situation. The case comes with all the screws you need to make sure your A1200 fits well and tight in it. However mine came with...a lot of screws and I have absolutely no idea where any of them belong! I did expect it to come with at least some sort of 1-2 page manual which shows where to use which screw type, but I was disappointed. No manual, no “thank you for buying” note either. I know these are very minor things to add, however as a normal customer and not an Amiga expert I would like these minor things to be included with my purchase.
The new case also includes a new black eject button for the floppy drive. Unfortunately mine did absolutely not fit the drive inside my A1200. Note that my model is from the ESCOM era, meaning it uses a normal PC floppy which has simply been modified to work with Amiga disks. Perhaps that’s the reason why the button won’t fit, but really the designers of these new cases should’ve thought about that. And yes, I tried many creative ways of attaching the button, all unsuccessful. So that’s another “meh” in my book.
All in all, do I think this purchase was worth 120€? I’d say yes. The case is nice, it looks well-made and all the components fit in it perfectly. But I really would’ve wished for a better documentation (or any documentation at all) on how to fit each component, which screw-type belongs where and how to attach things like the floppy eject button (and a note on which floppies it might not fit).
The A1200.net Amiga cases are officially licensed from Amiga Inc. and can be ordered from  various retro-computing shops such as AMIGAstore (Spanish), Alinea Computer (German),  Amedia Computer (French), AMIGAKIT (English UK) and AmigaOnTheLake (English US). Note that they are frequently sold out and are only available in very small quantities each time a new batch is produced.
Employee Spotlight - Sarah
Name: Sarah Tsung
Position: Associate
Tumblr media
Where did you go to school and what was your major?
I went to the University of Michigan, where I majored in Business and English. I always loved to read and write, so I studied English alongside business for my own personal enjoyment and sanity.
What is your favorite book then?
My four favorites are Defining Decade by Meg Jones, The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck, 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult, and Paper Towns by John Green.
What attracted you to healthcare consulting?
On healthcare:
I am tired of seeing people not have adequate healthcare coverage in the US. We are so behind the rest of the world when it comes to healthcare, and people shouldn’t have to choose between paying rent and their hospital bills. Although I am only one person, I want to do my part in making affordable healthcare accessible to communities in need.
On consulting:
I chose to go into consulting because I wanted a job that wasn’t the same routine every day. In consulting, you aren’t sitting at the same office desk day in and out. You travel, and there is a wide variety of projects you can be involved in at any time. I like the challenge and spontaneity.
What is the most helpful piece of advice you’ve ever received?
When you are looking for a job, you must consider 3 aspects. People, price, and project. For me, the biggest thing I look for is the people. You are going to spend a lot of time with your coworkers, so it’s important that you enjoy spending time with those people. That is one of my favorite things about Pathstone so far, everyone I’ve met is so willing to help you.
What is something you are passionate about and why?
Dance. I’ve been dancing since I was around 3 or 4 years old. I began to take it more seriously in high school, where I joined a competitive team and put together dances for culture and talent shows. In college, I joined the Michigan Ballroom Dance Team, who have won the national collegiate title for the last 14 years! I also taught dance (ballet, jazz, and lyrical) at a local studio for the last 4 years. Apart from dance being an amazing creative outlet, it taught me so many life lessons, such as learning how to support others while simultaneously being your best self, the importance of teamwork, and ongoing persistence and resilience.
What’s an accomplishment you are most proud of and why?
There was a consulting class I took in college, which was worth 9 credits. I was on a team with 4 MBA students; all came from different countries. We were placed on a project with a large toy manufacturing company and ended up generating around a confirmed $4M in savings. One of my favorite things I did was write up the final deliverable that was 60 pages long. I felt that my interests in writing and business were aligning well. And, everyone on the team is still in touch. It serves as a great example of effective teamwork that left everyone feeling very accomplished.
For dance, I got a teaching certificate from the American Ballet Theatre in New York. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done because their standards are so high, and the program is super rigorous. It’s hard to demonstrate your skills in front of such experienced teachers. You really have to put your best foot forward.
Tumblr media
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go first?
I have two answers. First, I would go directly under the Eiffel tower in Paris. I know some basic French and want to put those skills to use. Second, I would go to the “outback” in Australia. Apparently, unicorns live there with the kangaroos.
What’s a fun fact about yourself that people might not know?
I really like awful jokes, like dad jokes or bad knock knock jokes. A good pun will make my day.
Do you have any jokes you could tell me now?
Time flies like an arrow and fruit flies like a banana.
What are you looking forward to doing while living in Chicago?
I’m looking forward to taking a lot of hot yoga classes, a birthday dinner at Alinea, and playing with my roommate’s cat.
Finally, if you could have any superpower what one would you choose?
The ability to read minds. I’m always curious to know what people are thinking.
Hopleaf - Chicago, IL
Overall: A-
Bitterballen
5 Rabbit El Inigo Montoya 2016
O'Hanlon’s Thomas Hardy’s Ale 2006
I learned about Hopleaf shortly after turning 21. At the time, I was living half a block from Al’s Deli, a long-standing Evanston deli with a strong French influence that was a sleeper among the great Evanston restaurants. One of the owners of Al’s, a man who one of my friends dubbed the Cookie Wizard on accord of his almost inconceivably good cookies, recommended it to me while I was waiting for a sandwich. Shortly after that point, as a newly minted 21-year-old with a burgeoning interest in craft beef, I took the L down to Berwyn and walked to Hopleaf. At the time, I was entirely focused on Hopleaf’s legendary reputation as a beer bar and didn’t really know anything about the food. It was a memorable night - my first Zombie Dust, at the time almost impossible to find, and my first Belgian sour beer. As a college student, I stuck to the cheaper side of Hopleaf’s menu (sandwiches and mussels) and ordered a duck reuben. To this day, Hopleaf’s duck reuben remains one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Savory, crispy, creamy, complex, alongside a mound of thin, salty fries that were the perfect accompaniment to beer.
Fast-forward a few months, and I was back with a friend who insisted on ordering a charcuterie board - a luxury that I wasn’t used to and word I’d never even heard before. Among the offerings was a duck liver mousse. I’m not entirely sure what possessed me to try it at the time, as I was still sticking more to pizza and burgers than organ mousses, but it ended up being a seminal food experience. I’m not sure I’d ever eaten anything before that was so intensely rich that even a moderate amount at once was unpleasantly overwhelming. No doubt an early seed in what has grown into an all-encompassing food obsession.
This particular trip to Hopleaf required much more restraint. A quick stop for a beer and a bite before heading to Alinea, I wanted to ensure that I didn’t spoil my appetite. I planned on sticking to bitterballen, which I hadn’t had in about nine months since I was in Amsterdam, and the a beer leftover from the previous weekend’s anti-super bowl stout event. I ended up ordering an El Inigo Montoya 2016 from 5 Rabbit Cerveceria. El Inigo Montoya (a Princess Bride reference) is a barrel-aged version of Yodo con Leche and I’d heard great things from friends who said it was one of the best beers at Crafts and Drafts beer festival in Milwaukee one of the past years. It was very much a pre-pasty adjunct stout - not overly thick, very roasty, but prominent coffee and dulche de leche flavors. Pleasant, but somewhat dated relative to the current style. About half way through the glass, the bitterballen came out. For the uninitiated, bitterballen is a very misleading name. There’s nothing really bitter about them - rather, their falafel-esque fried balls of minced-meat stew. Typically dipped in mustard, they fit squarely into the realm of American comfort food and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them gain more traction in the future, especially if someone comes up with a clever, more English-friendly name. The bitterballen were great - crispy on the outside, very creamy on the inside with each bite seaming to have one slightly larger chunk of meat for texture. Probably not the best pairing with a roasty stout, but delicious none-the-less.
While enjoying my order, I was flipping through the bottle menu and saw that they had bottles of Thomas Hardy’s Ale. Thomas Hardy’s is a quintessential English barleywine, originally brewed between the 60s and 90s before the original brewery went out of business, the brand was revived by O’Hanlon’s between 2003 and 2008 before that brewery also ceased production. Since 2014, Thomas Hardy’s has been made by Meantime Brewery. As such a classic yet obscure beer, I’ve been actively looking for Thomas Hardy’s Ale for the past several years, and despite being deeply involved in the craft beer community, I’d never come across it. Hopleaf had bottles of the 2006 for sale, which may seem like a long time to age beer, but barleywine ages very well, and Thomas Hardy’s Ale is frequency aged in excess of 20 years. This beer made for a better pairing with the bitterballen. It was completely still with a mouthfeel slightly thicker than medium-thickness. The flavor was heavily dark fruit and sherry with notes of tobacco. The dark fruit and sherry in particular are characteristic of any heavily aged beer, especially English beers. Overall, a delicious beer, though for the less ambitious, I’d recommend sticking with JW Lee’s Harvest Ale. It is almost identical, but can be found fairly easily on liquor store shelves, often in vintages going back to 2001.
Useful blog writing
For our English class in our EPS course we had to discuss our outcomings on our blog posts we researched. The topics were different for everyone but the main focus was the same for all of us. That is how to explore how to write the perfect blog post.
Some points of attention were
Don’t put too much text in the blog post. Otherwise it will keep the reader from actually reading.
Title draws attention and is corresponding with the content.
Use topics so that the reader knows where the alinea is about.
Pro’s in the blog
A classmate read this blog that was about the picture that was shown in the header. The header picture was the base for the entire blog. In the text there was some extra information that confirmed what you could see and explained it.
A clear layout.
Understandable language.
Links to other pages.
As a conclusion it was the main focus to write the blog with a clear structure and use only the attaching images. Don’t put extra information in the blog post that isn’t useful so the reader isn’t going to be distracted.
50 places to travel in 2018
iryna/Shutterstock
Whether you're exploring the world solo or taking a romantic trip with a significant other, travel is arguably one of the best ways to spend your time and money.
The start of a new year provides the opportunity to add to your bucket list of destinations, and in the interest of helping you do that, we rounded up some of the best spots to visit in 2018.
Glide along the rivers of Ninh Binh, Vietnam, or wander the cobblestone streets of Tbilisi, Georgia — there's no shortage of countries to discover.
Keep scrolling to see 50 places that should be on your radar this coming year.
Ninh Binh, Vietnam
Known as the "Halong Bay on Land," Ninh Binh is a small city in Northern Vietnam. Its proximity to Hanoi — 60 miles to the south — is the reason that many overlook the scenic destination.
Nestled into the country's Red River Delta, Ninh Binh boasts impressive topography that includes mountains, limestone cliffs, and forests. Glide along the river in a traditional boat, explore caves in Cuc Phuong National Park, or visit the ancient temples and palaces in Hoa Lu.
Lake District, Cumbria, England
The Lake District is precisely what you'd imagine when you think of the English countryside. Rolling hills, serene streams, and moss-covered stones. This scenery has served as inspiration for countless famous writers, like Beatrix Potter.
The area makes up England's most popular national park, attracting around 18 million visitors per year. However, it wasn't until this summer that the Lake District was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to the country's tallest mountain (Scafell Peak) and its deepest and longest lakes (Wastwater Lake and Windmere Lake).
Chicago, Illinois
Named the "Restaurant City of the Year" by Bon Appétit magazine, Chicago is a hot destination for foodies. Must eats include the Au Cheval burger — which is frequently named among the best burgers in the country — deep dish pizza from any number of the city's institutions like Lou Malnati's or Pequod's, and anything from Alinea — which is considered one of the best restaurants in the country. The city also saw the opening of the first-ever Nutella Cafe this year.
Besides its buzzing dining scene, Chicago has plenty of other tourist draws: beaches, ballparks, breweries, comedy clubs, museums, and music festivals. Trivago also named the Langham Chicago the best five-star hotel in the US for 2018. Just do yourself a favor and avoid going during the brutally-cold winter.
