Welcome Back
Today I will be rating Beck's
Potential Partners?
The question mark is because some of them were definitely his partners, others will not admit it, and some came to...circumstances preventing a declaration of their love...anyway.
1. Bodhi
Tumblr media
Literally on screen for 30 seconds max
We all clocked that shit instantly
Never brought him up again (thx to retroactive backstory oops)
Beck was actually visibly sad about him tho to the point his boss/dad had to ask if he was ok
Absolute cute couple though
8/10 I knew him for five seconds and now I have to kill everyone in this room and then myself
2. Paige
Tumblr media
Y'all already know. Everyone knows. The whole grid knows.
The sexual tension is palpable
Which brings me to some difficult questions about the nature of programs and what physical functions they may or may not have.
Ugh I'm a sucker for the rivals to lovers thing tho
12/10 top ten hottest bi power couple if they don't kill each other first
3. Tron
Tumblr media
I went over this in my tron's exes list but I must reiterate cause reasons
Can you imagine meeting your hero, your icon, your savior and he's....a bit of a bitch??
But you learn and get to know him and he opens up to you and comes to trust you with his life UGH my heart
9/10 I rated this 7/10 before but I'm not scared anymore they're GOOD
4. Cyrus
Tumblr media
Look, he gets in with his bffs and the first thing they say to Beck is "you didn't tell us you had a new bf!" (Totally NOT paraphrasing that).
The fucked up stalker/victim pairing is SUCH good tea
And then he tries to kill him later? Delicious.
7/10 this one's for the toxicity šŸ˜
5. Lux (I had to look up her name)
Tumblr media
okay this one loses points because they WANTED me to ship this when we already knew Paige existed
I don't like to be told what to do
I mean, it's ok Beck has two hands(more like eight at this point) I can work with it
loved her jaded perspective turning into hope before she was fridged for male pai- I mean derezzed for reasons relevant to the plot šŸ‘€ that was definitely neat
Consider: she is pretty though
4/10 they're both a ten but I'm a bitter bitch so sue me
6. Mara
Tumblr media
tbh she's such a cutie and deserves way better than whatever incel shit Zed has going on
no wonder she's in love with Tron/the Renegade (I mean, same) I would beg a superhero to save me from him too
she and Beck have such a good dynamic
would be such a cute friends to lovers pair
can you imagine if she found out her bestie was the renegade she's been visibly/audibly thirsting after? Queen shit.
8/10 This one is actually the least toxic here
7. The rebellion leader whose name escapes me (it's Bartik)
Tumblr media
so this guy appears in legacy as the rebel leader at Castor's before getting derezzed five minutes later (shocker there)
this one just kinda leaped into my brain when I binged the show directly after watching Legacy
can you imagine inspiring someone to change sides completely and then become the leader of the very fire you sparked long after you're probably gone? Endlessly romantic.
6/10 I have yet to have a really bad ship tbh
8. Pavel
Tumblr media
I hate it, you hate it, we all hate it
But it's still pretty hot
8/10 bitch on bitch violence
9. Zed
Tumblr media
Ahaha I hate it
he's way too comfortable with the evil bad guy shit happening around him.
honestly I have no idea why Beck is even friends with him
HOWEVER
jock/loser pairing
Beck CAN AND WILL fix him
3/10 I don't think we can save this one boys
BONUS ROUND:
10. Tesler
Tumblr media
LMAO I just thought of this
Why do I love it tho
Something about the Darkseid omega beam hands that make me think weird thoughts
Now I wish I had put this on my tron list
1/10 or 9/10 depending on the day
I really do love that Beck is just the most specialest boy, he's the grid's next top model, he's batman, he's everything. Istg this is a harem anime in disguise and I ship him with everyone.
I can think of at least two programs off the top of my head that I didn't include because I forgot until now, so tell me about your rare pairs, etc. I was thinking about rating Clu's crushes that he handles in a completely normal way next but that might be too much. This is what happens when we have no new content for 10 years.

I donā€™t know much about booster gold, but I will say, seeing ur posts abt him is delightful and has increased my enjoyment of his character :] like I said tho idk much, whatā€™s like the basics? Or what u think is most important about any of ur fav heroes to know?
Oh thank you! I'm glad my crazy ramblings can make ppl happy. I'll keep this to Booster bc it's gonna get sorta long.
I have...so many thoughts about Booster (he is my second favorite dc hero behind Ted!) and If I were to have to sum him up really quickly I would say "He seems like a really simple character but that's his mask, you peel back that mask and he's actually really nuanced."
Which yknow, really vague way to say something about him so here are the top things I first mention when introducing him to people (outside of the fact he's from the future).
I think "he is imposter syndrome as a hero" is a really good way to phrase it if people are willing to have a more nuanced look into WHY that is the case. There are a million reasons he thinks little of himself, he wants everyone to think he is the best to make up for that.
He grew up poor, this is probably one of the most important base things about him when you look at his relationship to money throughout his stories. Also he lived with his twin sister Michelle and his Mother (Ellen) but it seems the weight of expenses in their lives were mostly on HIM because of the circumstances.
Side note: We see Booster often take up roles of caring for people, he sort of has a motherly aspect to him (he's actually a better parent than a certain popular dc hero but lol).
He has a gambling addiction that affected his backstory. He inherited this from his dad, but Booster originally started gambling on his own football games to help pay for his mothers health issues. Only he couldn't stop even as she got better. ( I honestly prefer the original telling of this story where Boosters father never comes back, and Booster can't stop because of his own issues with gambling.)
The basics of Booster wanting to outwardly to the public be seen as "the perfect all American commercial celebrity hero" really leads to interesting retrospection. You can read his story as a lot of things, a lot of people read it as a metaphor for being gay (or trans) and in the closet. I also find he's interesting to read as a disabled and neurodivergent person.
His survival relies on how others view him. This goes for both financially and emotionally (his self worth) This is what fuels a lot of his actions and emotions inwardly. Also how he will explicitly self sabotage his image in explosive ways in moments of high stress To add on to that: In bg vol 1 there's an arc where the league thinks he's turned on them when really he was under cover. when nobody would believe him that he was doing it for good he literally has an explosive reaction. He blows up his house/base for his heroism business then tries to LEAVE to go back to a future time. He also self sabotages his own image post 2000s because he wants other heroes to think lesser of him so his identity as a time master is secret. Just interesting to me.
Overall he's just a really high-emotional guy, need's therapy but considering what dc apparently thinks of therapy he will never get it, deserves better than he thinks he does.
There's so much about Booster I can't fit it all here! But he's worth the reading to find out everything about him if you ever do decide to get more into him :-].

Yep, I'm doing this. Crosssposting my Yuletide letter here just for the hell of it.
Overall I like stories that are more on the lighthearted side, fun with a bit of humor and a happy ending. Grand, world-saving plots are always great, but I love an adventure where the stakes are low and personally important to the characters, and when the plot gives them a chance to show off their competence and recognize the competence of the people around them. (Most of the characters I've requested are a bit pathetic or goofy to some degree or another and I absolutely encourage embracing that, but they're also good at what they do and I'd like them to have a chance to shine.) I don't like AUs that completely change the canon setting and circumstances, but I'm always interested to see what people do with "What if [canon event] happened differently?"-type AUs. Characters and their interactions are always the biggest thing I'm here for, so I'm definitely hoping for banter and casual physical affection, both platonic and romantic. And speaking of romantic, there are definitely some requests here where that's what I'm hoping for, although in all cases I will absolutely be happy with platonic relationships between the characters as well. For romantic stories I'm a sucker for mutual pining and accidental feelings realizations, and I love unusual and unexpected romantic moments and flirtation, where maybe this wouldn't look like flirting if anyone else was doing it, but when it's these specific characters it definitely is. I'm not keen on second-person POV, but first and third are equally welcome.
DNWs:Ā explicit sex, unrequested non-canon pairings, unrequested identity headcanons, non-canon character death, tragic/bleak endings, mundane/modern/setting change AUs, non-canon severe illness/injury (canon-typical comedic, non-permanent injuries in cartoon canons are fine), animal harm.
Fandom-specific likes and prompts
Darkwing Duck Requested characters: Drake Mallard, Gosalyn Mallard, Launchpad McQuack
I'd really love some domesticity for this group, especially mixed in with the way their home lives intersect with the crimefighting. Navigating the early days of making it work as a household and as a family, and how that changes over time. Possibly as Gosalyn gets older Darkwing considers bringing her into the crimefighting business (maybe to fill in temporarily because Launchpad is unavailable for some reason, or maybe as a more permanent thing) and has to walk the parenting tightrope of "wanting to help my kid grow" and "wanting to keep my kid safe"? Or maybe a look at her relationship with Launchpad specifically, and how it differs from her relationship with her dad? Also, Launchpad is out there being a superhero's sidekick with no secret identity to protect him and it should be super easy to connect him to both his lives. I don't actually have any specific thoughts about that; it just makes me go "Hey, wait a minute" sometimes and I wanted to throw it out there. And I definitely ship Darkwing/Launchpad, so if the spirit moves you in that direction knock yourself out. (But nothing about them dealing with homophobia, please!)
Kung Fu Panda Requested characters: Tigress, Shifu
This is a request made mostly in hopes of fix-it fic. The original movie makes it clear enough how desperate Tigress is for Shifu's approval, and every time the extended materials dip into her backstory it just hammers home how long she's been chasing it and how much not getting it has affected her. What I'd really like to see is Shifu actuallyĀ recognizingĀ that post-canon (or at least post-first film) and making some effort to ease that pain and improve the relationship between them going forward. I don't need a huge dramatic blow-up with groveling, just something that says the first steps are being taken. (Maybe something tied to that still of the two of them eating noodles in the end credits? I always felt like that suggested some of the tension between them loosening up.) And if that whole thing feels like kind of a lot (fair), maybe something about what she was like growing up, before things got really difficult. I've always thought that her time with him must have overlapped with Tai Lung's (would Shifu have taken her in so readily if he was already bitter about his previous failure?), so what would that have been like, and how would that loss that she was too young to understand have affected their relationship?
Oxventure D&D Requested characters: Prudence, Corazon de Ballena
That reference I made in my general likes, to characters who are pathetic or goofy but still surprisingly competent? I was definitely counting the Oxventurers among those, and Corazon especially. I love how cool he thinks he is, and how cool Prudence actually is (well, you know, most of the time), and I love the chemistry between them when they're being terrible people who are trying very hard to pretend not to care and failing miserably at it. Especially when they're being a mix of terrible and caring towards each other. They play off each other so well and have so much chemistry that I'd love to see them doing almost anything together (unintentionally taking a day off in the same place? Secretly planning a job they don't think the rest of the guild will approve of?), but I do specifically ship it pretty hard and I am always down to see things go in that direction. Anything that involves accidentally realizing and/or revealing their feelings for each other would be great, and specifically I think these two would be perfect for a fake dating plot (as part of a plan that made sense at the time? To piss off Corazon's dad?) that gets more real than either of them ever intended it to.
Megamind Requested characters: Megamind, Roxanne Ritchi
Even when these two are in conflict there's a level of sincerity and familiarity between them that I love, and they're already pretty flirty and comfortable with each other from the very beginning of the movie.Ā I'd be interested to see a pre-canon take on that, with the two of them gradually getting bolder and more familiar in their interactions as Megamind starts to develop an interest in Roxanne and Roxanne realizes that a) Megamind is basically harmless and b) it's really fun to push his buttons. If "Bernard" had never happened, would they have ever gotten to an 'openly interested in each other' stage on their own? Alternately, post-canon it would be fun to see the two of them learning to live in each other's worlds, with Roxanne helping Megamind get used to being around people and interacting with the public like just another citizen, and Roxanne getting used to being with someone who approaches everything in his life (including romance) with the same level of drama and spectacle he devotes to villainy.

ā€œbut I thought about how I needed to say thisā€
a.k.a. yet another meta dissection of The Apology. I actually wrote most of this up on Friday night based on the original Japanese (@pikahluaā€‹ has an excellent translation up here, and I also used @hanashimasā€™ translations as a reference as well), but I wanted to wait until the official release, though that turned out to be a mixed bag to say the least lol.
I would also recommend reading @pikahluaā€‹ and @class1akidsā€‹ā€™ breakdowns of this scene (here and here, respectively), because they are excellent, and because if any scene deserves to have as many meta breakdowns written about it as possible, itā€™s this one.
anyway so here goes.
Tumblr media
Caleb did a more accurate job with this than the fanscan, even if he did try his best to take us out of the seriousness of the moment by throwing in that swiss cheese line lol. anyway so there are two things I want to talk about here. the first is the line about Izuku not remembering, which I thought was a nice touch. of course he doesnā€™t remember what Kacchan said back then. he wasnā€™t exactly in the soundest emotional state after seeing one of the people he cares about most taking a near-fatal blow that was meant for him. Iā€™d be shocked if he remembers anything about the aftermath (including the way he flew into a mindless rage afterwards) right up until the point when he entered the OFA Interstellar Party Void with Tomura. anyway, so I thought that was a nice callback.
and speaking of emotional states, the other thing I wanted to talk about is the part that Caleb got right which the fan scanlation didnā€™t. ā€œbut I had more to say.ā€ in other words,Ā ā€œstop trying to win on your ownā€ wasnā€™t just a one-liner; it was meant to be the beginning of a much longer speech. ā€œthere were other things that I needed to say.ā€
like, can we just stop and talk about that for a second. because basically what this means is that in that instant, when Kacchan pushed Deku out of the way and got impaled, his one and only thought was that he needed to apologize to Deku. his life was presumably flashing before his eyes, he had no idea if he was going to survive or not, and the only thing on his mind was how urgently he needed to make things right with his former childhood friend.
moving on!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so I have a confession to make, which is that I am relieved to see Katsuki describingĀ this as the reason why he bullied Deku, as opposed to Horikoshi trying to retcon it into some sort of ā€œsecretly he was just trying to protect him and keep him out of harmā€™s way because he was worriedā€ thing, which ngl would not have gelled very well with me. the thing is that Iā€™m really not a fan of the whole ā€œKacchan Did Nothing Wrongā€ mentality that some fans seem to have. like, I have seen all sorts of convoluted attempts to find excuses for Katsukiā€™s shitty behavior, but in my view those attempts undermine what I love about his character in the first place. Katsuki is such a great character specifically because he is not perfect. his redemption arc is so compelling because he was such a giant asshole at the start. he was completely at fault, and he acknowledges this, and takes full responsibility for it. and that is fucking fantastic.
his arc is so great because it doesnā€™t rely on garnering sympathy by giving him a Tragic Past, or by trying to foist the blame for his behavior over on someone else. itā€™s an arc that acknowledges that redemption isnā€™t something you achieve by making people feel sorry for you; itā€™s something you have to earn by actively working to change and do better. and by forgoing the ā€œmisunderstood/tragic pastā€ route, Horikoshi is making a statement that anyone can go down the wrong path, but that more importantly, anyone can also choose at any time to turn away from said path. there is only one requirement for doing so, and that is realizing that youā€™ve done wrong, and deciding that you want to change.
anyway, so in chapter 284 Kacchan of course had that whole speech about Deku not taking himself into account, and mentioned how that made him want to keep his distance. and a good chunk of fandom took this to mean that Katsukiā€™s bullying was actually a misguided response to Dekuā€™s reckless tendencies -- sort of an ā€œif I show him how weak and powerless he really is, I can get him to accept the reality that heā€™s quirkless, and that being a hero will just get him hurt or killedā€ type of thing. and I wonā€™t lie, for a good while I was wondering myself if Horikoshi was really going to go down that route. and like I said, I am honestly relieved that he didnā€™t. not only for the reasons stated in the previous paragraph, but also because the message that would have sent -- that there are certain circumstances in which bullying can almost be excused because the bully had Good Intentions and was just trying to save the other person from themselves, and so it Wasnā€™t That Bad, Actually -- is all kinds of fucked up to say the least. so yeah, Iā€™m glad we ended up steering well clear of that.
(ETA: this post was long enough already so I edited out the 3 additional paragraphs I originally wrote analyzing the dialogue from 284. but just to be clear, Iā€™m not trying to imply that Kacchan worrying about Dekuā€™s recklessness is a retconned thing that Horikoshi only threw into the story recently, because there are multiple instances throughout the story where he clearly is worried and in total denial of it. but I firmly believe those feelings are not what led to the bullying. theyā€™re two separate things. Kacchan worrying about Deku is what prompts him to yell at him in chapter 1 when Deku comes to save him. but itā€™s not what incited him to burn his notebook and taunt him earlier in that same chapter. that action had a much meaner and more selfish motivation behind it, and Iā€™m glad Horikoshi didnā€™t try to change it up last minute, because it wouldnā€™t have felt right.)
thankfully as of this chapter I think we can safely cross that out as a possibility, as weā€™re given the true explanation straight from Katsuki himself. and the truth is that he bullied Deku out of insecurity and jealousy and fear and intolerance. there was nothing noble about it. there were no good intentions concealed in his actions. there are no justifications given, no excuses offered, and no mitigating circumstances to be considered, other than the fact (which neither he nor Horikoshi bring up) that he was and is still a child, and that children make mistakes.
itā€™s an explanation that challenges many of fandomā€™s ideas on who is and isnā€™t eligible to be redeemed. there is no Ozai in Katsukiā€™s backstory. thereā€™s no great tragedy that he spent a lifetime trying to rise above. the only villain in Katsukiā€™s story is Katsuki himself. the only darkness that he has to overcome is his own. and itā€™s challenging, because I think many people believe the only way someone can be redeemed for doing bad things is if bad things happen to them in return. but what Horikoshi is saying here is that thatā€™s not the case. bad doesnā€™t erase bad. and the one and only way to truly earn redemption is by doing good.
and thatā€™s what makes this such a phenomenal scene for me. by not shying away from Katsukiā€™s flaws and failings, and having him take full responsibility for them, Horikoshi keeps the apology from being self-serving, and underscores the true depth of Katsukiā€™s character development. the level of self-awareness he has here is something most people can only dream of. which is very fitting, as thatā€™s perhaps the most important takeaway from his character arc -- that itā€™s only by acknowledging your own weaknesses and flaws that you can learn to overcome them and reach your full potential.
one last thing to point out here, which is that in the panel where Katsuki finally acknowledges his terrible treatment of Deku, Deku is not even visible. instead, Horikoshi drew the panel from a perspective that makes it appear that Katsuki is addressing this particular line not just to Deku, but to all of his classmates.
Tumblr media
again, he shows him taking full responsibility and admitting his wrongdoings in front of the people whose opinions and approval he cares about most. and just to clarify in case thereā€™s any confusion from Calebā€™s translation, Kacchanā€™s wording makes it very clear that he wasnā€™t justĀ ā€œmeanā€ to Deku, but that he full-on bullied him (he uses the same verb -- ā€œijimeruā€ (苛悁悋) -- that he did back in chapter 284). thereā€™s no attempt to downplay his actions here.
Tumblr media
moving on now, this chapter also reaffirmed another thing about Deku and Kacchanā€™s relationship which I was glad to see revisited -- Kacchanā€™s unwavering belief in Dekuā€™s ability. this is one of those paradoxical things about their relationship which Iā€™ve always been fascinated by, but which is also kind of hard to explain, because I donā€™t want it to come off like Iā€™m trying to put a positive spin on something which was unequivocally awful. like, please donā€™t think Iā€™m trying to say that Katsukiā€™s bullying of Deku was in any way a good thing. but that being said, thereā€™s also a strange irony at play here, which is that Katsukiā€™s jealousy and insecurity also betray the fact that even at his very worst, he never once underestimated Deku. he has always believed in Dekuā€™s strength, even when that strength pissed him off and made him afraid and uneasy.
no one else -- not All Might, or even Dekuā€™s own mom -- believed from the get-go that Deku could become a hero. but Katsuki never once counted him out, even when he was calling him a pebble in his shoe. he confesses here that even though heĀ ā€œtried to act superior by rejecting [Deku]ā€, in truth he was never able to shake the feeling that Deku was above him. long before he ever understood the concept of ā€œwin to saveā€, he knew instinctively that there was a strength in Dekuā€™s heart that couldnā€™t be measured, and which had the potential to surpass even his own strength. and Iā€™ve always felt that this was so important, because itā€™s the one aspect of their early relationship that hinted that on some level, however subconscious, Katsuki held the same type of faith in Deku that Deku always held in him. it was one of the few things that hinted at there being a possible path towards reconciliation one day. and it paved the way for the most important shift in their relationship to date, when Katsuki finally realized who Deku got his quirk from, and responded not with resentment or spite, but with acceptance.
moving on, I also really love the way we see them portrayed at the different stages of their childhood throughout this speech, and how it perfectly lines up with the dialogue. from small children (when Katsuki talks about his insecurities first manifesting), to middle schoolers (when he talks about the bullying), to high schoolers (when he talks about the past year and everything heā€™s learned at U.A.). Horikoshi really didnā€™t have to go that hard, but he did, and thatā€™s why we love him.
and then we finally get to That Part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
where do I even start with this there are so many things omg.
the bow. this is the one and only time Katsuki has ever bowed to anyone of his own volition as far as I recall. and this absolutely is a bow, just to be clear, even though his form is straight-up garbage (very Kacchan-esque, with his feet and arms spaced apart because heā€™s still a punk after all). this is Kacchan showing more humility and respect than heā€™s ever shown to anyone else in his entire life.
regarding ā€œIzukuā€, I actually have mixed feelings about this to tell the truth. I think it was a good call here because it was incredibly effective in setting the tone and showing just how serious Kacchan is. however if he continues to use ā€œIzukuā€ rather than ā€œDekuā€ from here on out, that would give the impression in hindsight that all his past usage of ā€œDekuā€ really was meant as an insult, which would undermine some of my favorite scenes. I would really like to believe that since DvK2 or thereabouts, Kacchan has (mostly) been using ā€œDeku (affectionate)ā€ rather than ā€œDeku (useless loser)ā€, lol. but if he switches to the ā€œnicerā€ name on a permanent basis following his apology, it implies that the previous nickname was indeed being used cruelly. and so honestly I hope this was just a one-time thing, because I do think that in Katsukiā€™s mind, the nameĀ ā€œDekuā€ hasnā€™t been meant as a slight to him for a long time now.
ā€œmy truth/this is what I truly feelā€ -- the word Katsuki uses in Japanese is honne (ęœ¬éŸ³), and if youā€™re familiar with the concept of honne/tatemae, thatā€™s the same ā€œhonneā€ heā€™s talking about here. it means that heā€™s casting aside all of his walls and facades and expressing what he truly feels. and of course, one of the fascinating things about Katsukiā€™s character is that heā€™s the exact opposite of most people in that he chooses to put his meanness on full display to the public, and ironically itā€™s the kindest parts of himself which he tends to keep the most carefully guarded and hidden away. this also means that while his rage and anger are very often insincere and put on just for show, those relatively few occasions where he lets his humanity truly shine through are pretty much 100% genuine, as is the case with this one here.
and Dekuā€™s face says it all when it comes to how powerful those moments can be as a result.
Tumblr media
and this, right here, is why it wasnā€™t enough for Katsuki to atone solely through his actions, and why he needed to actually say the words as well. itā€™s not that the words are more important; obviously the actions are far and away the most important part, and carry far more meaning. but the reason why Katsuki needed to say the words as well is simply because Izuku needed to hear them. needed to, and deserved to, because this is one of the most important people in the world to him.
and so he deserves to know that the relationship isnā€™t just one-sided, and that he is just as important to Kacchan as Kacchan is to him. he deserves to know that Kacchan understands how horribly he treated him, and that heā€™s sorry for it. and he deserves to know that Kacchan, without any expectation of it changing their relationship -- meaning that he will continue to feel this way regardless of what Izuku says or does from here on out -- cares about him. now more than ever, with AFO out there doing everything in his power to make Izuku feel as alone as possible, this is something that he really, really needed to hear.
Tumblr media
so this part has some interesting wordplay which neither Calebā€™s translation nor the fan scanlation was really able to get across. basically, in the Japanese version, when Katsuki talks about ā€œthose idealsā€, Horikoshi uses the kanji for ā€œidealā€, but pronounces it as ā€œAll Might.ā€ obviously the meaning of this isnā€™t too hard to decipher, as we all know how much both boys admire All Might. to them, he absolutely is synonymous with the Ideal. so this is a way of showing that respect they both have towards him, even as Katsuki goes on to point out the one fatal flaw that All Might was never able to overcome.
and speaking of interesting wording, as others have noted, at this point in his speech Katsuki switches from ā€œtemeeā€ (which he was using earlier during the ā€œyour strengths and my weaknessesā€ part) to ā€œomaeā€ (ā€œomaeā€ being a less insulting word for ā€œyouā€, though still very manly and tough-sounding), which is definitely a big deal. though fwiw this is not the first time heā€™s used ā€œomaeā€ for Deku (he switches to it briefly right after DvK2, when he tells Deku ā€œyou had the strongest guy lay the groundwork for you -- donā€™t loseā€, and then later when theyā€™re walking back to the dorms and he says heā€™ll learn and get stronger by watching everyone around him just like Deku did). itā€™s definitely a good choice on Horikoshiā€™s part though,Ā as it makes this last part of the speech sound more earnest and sincere.
Tumblr media
just a quick note, he does indeed use a plural pronoun here, as in ā€œthe obstacles that you canā€™t overcome, we will overcome.ā€ but as @pikahluaā€‹ pointed out, the ā€œweā€ here is ambiguous -- it could either mean ā€œweā€ as in class 1-A -- ā€œwe will overcome them for youā€ -- OR it could mean ā€œweā€ as in all of them -- class 1-A and Deku. ā€œwe will overcome them together.ā€ idk about you, but I know which one gets my vote.
anyway, and so this is the line that finally wins Deku over and allows him to let go of his fears, however briefly. what I love about this is Kacchanā€™s utter conviction. one thing that Calebā€™s translation doesnā€™t quite get across is Kacchanā€™s use of the word morenaku -- ā€œwithout exceptionā€ -- when he talks about how theyā€™re going to save everyone and win. it echoes that same sentiment he showed back during the Joint Training arc -- that itā€™s not a perfect victory unless they save everyone. every last person. and he explicitly lists Deku among their number, just so there can be no doubt.
and Dekuā€™s response to this (or at least his thoughts, since heā€™s not really able to get many words out) pretty much brings everything full circle here.
Tumblr media
he acknowledges that everyone else has gotten ahead of him. which is especially meaningful given who heā€™s standing directly across from. because for most of the series, as we all well know, itā€™s been Kacchan who was woefully lagging behind Deku in the character growth department. but now Deku himself is acknowledging that not only has Kacchan finally caught up at last, but that he and the others have surpassed him. which is only temporary, I should add, as I have zero doubt that Deku will catch up again soon. but the fact remains that just as Dekuā€™s rapid increase in strength and skill left Kacchan scrambling to keep up earlier in the series, Kacchanā€™s extraordinary character development has now left Deku in that same position. as All Might once put it, ā€œwhen heā€™s starting at level one, and youā€™re already at level 50, itā€™s only natural that youā€™ll be growing at different rates.ā€
and whatā€™s so wonderful about this though is that the two of them are finally approaching that point where theyā€™ve both caught up to each other and are finally starting to level out. Deku is a full-on badass, and Kacchan is out here talk-no-jutsuing with the best of them. the two of them have been chasing and chasing after each other this entire time, and now theyā€™re finally just about ready to meet in the middle at long last, with each of them fully embodying both of those two crucial aspects -- win, and save.
just about. because Deku still needs some help catching up. but seeing as help has already been offered -- and accepted -- I canā€™t imagine it will be very long now, and I canā€™t wait to see him finally overcoming those fears and doubts with his friends by his side. itā€™s going to be such a powerful moment.
and last but not least,
Tumblr media
or, as I prefer,
Tumblr media
you had one job, Caleb. flkjsdlk.
but at least this provides a good opportunity to note that unlike the ā€œweā€™ll help you handle itā€ line earlier in the speech, here the phrasing is left up to interpretation, as he doesnā€™t use a pronoun. so it could be ā€œwe knowā€, or, as the fan scanlation put it, ā€œI know.ā€ or it could be both. regardless, itā€™s good stuff.
anyway, and so Deku passes out, and in the process Horikoshi gives us one last parting metaphor, just in case anyone still thinks Kacchan is all talk because they havenā€™t been paying attention for the past 322 chapters (more likely than you think). once again, Katsukiā€™s actions speak louder than his words (even his nice words) ever could: he is literally there to catch Deku when he falls.
so thatā€™s it! my sincere thanks to anyone who actually read through all of my endless ramblings about this scene which I have been waiting for since day one. props to Horikoshi for taking on an impossibly difficult task, and pulling it off with all of the emotion and care and nuance that Iā€™ve come to expect from his writing. imo he delivered on every single level with the exception of the aftermath, which I donā€™t consider to have actually happened yet. Dekuā€™s part of this is definitely a ā€œto be continued.ā€ but yeah, as far as Kacchanā€™s part goes, 10/10. so fucking proud of this kid.

Hello! So, I had a dream in which instead of Megatron it was Optimus/Orion who joined the Lost Light. And Iā€™ve been thinking about it... how different would everything turn out? Megatron staying on Cybertron and confronting decepticons (because I believe he would have joined the autobots in this AU?? too) and maybe even going to Earth along with Prowl, Arcee and co, his conflict with Starscream (and Windblade?), his conflict with humans after AHM (awkwaaaard), trying to redeem himself but kind of failing (like remember Optimus annexing the Earth?).
And Orion (who may or may not become a co-captain) dealing with his deeds (because he, too, directly or indirectly killed a lot of people), Brainstorm maybe actually trying to kill him instead of Megatron, Rodimus vs. Optimus, Getawayā€™s conflict with him (he (believed) that he was ā€œworthyā€ of the Matrix, after all).
Thereā€™s just so much that can be explored!
first off, you guys continue to have way cooler dreams than me, and i continue to be jealous.
second of all, i get that you probably meant this from an in-universe perspective, but my brain immediately jumps to 'what if Megatron was in exRiD and Orion was in MTMTE/LL', which tbh is something i have thought about before, haha. the way the storylines on Cybertron vs the LL go is so tied not just to in-universe plot events but also the genres those comics are in and the approaches they take, it's hard for me to imagine without considering that element.
some not-very-connected thoughts i have, given all the above:
barber is a loooot less sentimental than jro about many TF characters. i don't say this as a value judgement, just an observation. in particular, his approach to OP as a Big Iconic Character TM in exRiD is to make OP central to the lives of other characters and explore his impact on them, rather than necessarily making OP a very conventional protagonist. which definitely fits with a ton of what you bring up here, and ESPECIALLY the stuff re: humans on Earth if Megatron was there, rather than off in space. the entire element of what atrocities Megatron committed during the war mostly being towards non-cybertronians by numbers that gets brought up in EC becomes a lot less hypothetical and lot more immediate with Megatron on Earth. i think that's a storyline for Megatron that would have a very ambiguous tone and be a lot more about how other characters feel about him than in MTMTE/LL, where much of the focus comes from his perspective more directly.
i think megatron-prowl would have been a FASCINATING parallel in this context btw. AND megatron-arcee. honestly, i think megatron would have fit into exRiD surprisingly well thematically. arcee, prowl and megatron in IDW all represent different questions about surprisingly similar themes IMO: culpability, change, agency over your circumstances and actions, and exploitation vs. being explioited. and prowl-megatron especially is very personal, and really brings into focus the 'war left every side with dirty bullshit to deal with', versus arcee having been largely uninvovlved and having a very different outsider perspective, so.
by contrast i feel somewhat less enthusiastic about OP in the LL? partly because I am not sure jro is great at committing to IDW OP as flawed. i won't get too into it here because one day i really want to write meta about it, but the backstory jro fleshed out for OP (the 'one good hero cop' stuff we see first in Chaos Theory and then in Shadowplay, etc) has always been one of the weaker parts of phase two for me. also, I don't think OP fits as well into the themes of MTMTE/LL as megs does for exRiDā€¦ there's a lot about what it means to make significance in your life when you have become insignificant, but OP never actually becomes insignificant in IDW. he sort ofā€¦ tries to, and the issue he has is that he fails. imo anyway.
still, there's definitely some interesting possibilities. for a start, the rodimus-OP stuff would be WILD. the chance to really address some of that Autocracy stuff is so tantalizing, and something there was just never room for anywhere else. likewise the Getaway stuff you mention, especially regarding the MTO subtext coming full bore with the guy who approved that for the autobots right there. OP is not just the guy who has the matrix, he's ALSO the guy who approved the program which created getaway AND the guy who presumably approved it being soā€¦ you know. awful and a war crime and all that. (i would totally love a version of events where getaway preys on roddy's insecurities re: OP to depose him, only to turn on roddy himself.)
anyway jkfhjss yeah it's very interesting!! i will say, i didn't mention the starscream-windblade stuff because i genuinely am not sure where i think that would go... mostly because there are kind of two versions of those plots in idw and they have, imo, very different starscreams in particular. barber and scott were kind of telling different stories, especially re: that history with starscream, so... idk.

You believe it was a Tuesday when you caught Zhongliā€™s eye.
You were starting to think that Childe had permanently moved to Liyue after heā€™d invited you out for lunch on that fateful day, promising to make up for what had happened at the diplomatic ball all those months ago. Begrudgingly, youā€™d agreed, solely for the fact that you were starting to enjoy finding ways to rile the Harbinger up.
ā€œAh, Iā€™ve invited a friend over, if you donā€™t mind,ā€ you heard him say behind the partition of the Liuli Pavilion. You raised an eyebrow, surprised that Childe had other friends besides you (if you could even call yourself his friend at all).
ā€œMaster Childe, your guest is here,ā€ the waiter announced, and you nod in thanks as you make your way over to the reserved table. You raised your eyes, first to meet Childeā€™s in greeting, and second to look at his other visitor.
(Dear Celestia, heā€™s beautiful.)
Youā€™d fought the urge to gape at the tall stranger enjoying a cup of tea adjacent to where you were standing. His eyes had peered over the rim to give you a quick once-over, which normally you would have found rude, but there wasnā€™t a hint of disrespect emanating from himā€”just pure curiosity.
Actually, you werenā€™t sure if he had the capacity to be anything negative, despite having just laid eyes on him for the very first time.
ā€œAllow me to introduce (Y/N),ā€ Childe said, breaking you out of your thoughts. ā€œA very dear comrade of mine.ā€
ā€œWe only just met a few months ago,ā€ you corrected him rather curtly, taking a seat and trying not to overwhelm yourself with the eyes you could feel practically boring into your soul.
ā€œYes, but all circumstances considered, I feel like Iā€™ve known you forever by now.ā€ Childe waggled his eyebrows in the most unattractive way possible, pulling a snort from you. ā€œ(Y/N), this is Mr. Zhongli, a consultant for the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor.ā€
ā€œPleased to make your acquaintance,ā€ the man named Zhongli finally spoke, and you nearly wanted to keel over from the deep timbre of his voice. His voice sounded like entire mountains moving, and all youā€™d managed was a small smile and a polite nod.
ā€œ(Y/N) hereā€™s from the Adventurerā€™s Guild,ā€ Childe continued. ā€œAll the way from Mondstadt.ā€
ā€œInteresting.ā€ Zhongli set his cup down. ā€œWhat do you specialize in?ā€
ā€œSpecializeā€”ā€ you squeaked, before clearing your throat and shaking your head in embarrassment. ā€œWell, I take on commissions like any other Adventurer, really. But Iā€™m a...a scholar of sorts, so itā€™s my job to learn as much as I can about a region to add to the Guildā€™s intel. Help Adventurers know the lay of the land and the culture that surrounds it.ā€
ā€œImpressive,ā€ Zhongli mused, and you could tell that he meant it, by the way his eyes softened marginally. ā€œAnd what made you move to Liyue?ā€
Childe snickered as he dug into his food. ā€œFunny you should ask, becauseā€”ā€
You crushed his foot under yours. ā€œWell, Iā€™ve already learned much about Mondstadt, so Iā€™ve decided to move on to different nations to expand my research. And the, er, pay is marginally better here, so it was a rather easy decision to make.ā€
You didn't explain any further, having already learned the dire consequences of running your mouth willy-nilly from no less than the person struggling with chopsticks sitting next to you.Ā
The memories of your last visit to Mondstadt didnā€™t help either, with their endless picking at your heart and at your conscience.
Thankfully, Zhongli had only nodded, murmuring ā€œThat sounds practicalā€ before turning his attention back to his food. Youā€™d taken it as a sign to start preparing your own dish, picking steamed buns and vegetables from the revolving center of the table.
As much as you had wanted to hear from Zhongli a little more, you couldnā€™t find the words to speak. Thankfully, Childe was happy to fill the void with anecdotes from his travels, as well as some other remarks that kept the lunch from being uncomfortably silent. It was jarring to see someone as rambunctious as him converse so easily with someone as serene as Zhongli, who acted as if it was the most normal thing in the world.Ā
An image came to you then, of an orange-haired dog sprinting around in circles, its tail occasionally smacking into a black cat trying to sleep. A giggle slipped past your lips before you could stop it, and your cheeks burned when Zhongli and Childe turned to look at you.
But all good things come to an end, and it came in the form of a Fatui member coming over to whisper in Childeā€™s ear. The Harbingerā€™s face fell briefly, before sighing and waving his subordinate away. "There goes the rest of my afternoon plans," he complained, setting his chopsticks down and standing up.
"You're leaving?" Zhongli asked.
"Some new members thought it would be funny to mess around with some lawachurls, and now they've lost most of their supplies for the month." Childe pinched the gap between his eyebrows in annoyance. "I'd reckon some bone-breaking is in orderā€”if they aren't already broken, that is."
You shook your head, knowing all too well what lawachurls were capable of, and wondered how they would compare against one of Childe's harsh reprimands.Ā
"The bill's covered, so please stay as long as you like." He bowed slightly to Zhongli, before turning to you with a grin. "I'll be seeing you around, lovely."
His gloved hand reached out to swipe lightly against your cheek, and you smacked it away, hearing nothing but an amused chuckle as he left.
As soon as Childe had left, it took you a while to realize the situation you were in.
Your breath stuttered.
Zhongli sighed. "I'm not opposed to punishment in response to reckless behavior, but Childe does have some interesting ideas in that department." He looked at you, and his eyes seemed to be smiling. "How long have the two of you been together?"
You choked on your drink, spitting it out rather unattractively before coughing the rest of the liquid out of your lungs. You accepted the napkin that Zhongli passed to you, cheeks warming uncomfortably as you patted your mouth dry.
"We aren't together," you finally said. "Not in that way. I just owe him something."
"In that case, you have my deepest sympathies," Zhongli replied, raising his glass to you with a humorous look on his face.
You elected to say no more beyond that, believing your character to be as good as ruined in the eyes of such a dignified gentleman, and instead focusing on the slice of pie you'd taken for dessert.
For better or for worse, it seemed Zhongli wasn't keen on letting you off so easily. "So, a scholar at the Adventurer's Guild," he started again. "It seems like a very interesting job indeed. Were your parents Adventurers, too?"
"My mother was, yes," you replied, and your throat tightened a little at the mention of her. "My father was a hunter at Springvale."
Zhongli hummed. "I'm sure your mother is proud of you for having progressed so far in your career."
"I doubt it."
Zhongli only looked up at you in confusion.
"My mother left me to go on an adventure and never came back." The words had come out as a spit, as if the words mixed horribly with the crumbs in your mouth and your natural reflexes had kicked in.
"My apologies," Zhongli said. "I was not aware."
"It's alright," you'd replied, wanting nothing more than to change the subject.
"Forgive me, but...your father?"
"He passed away a few years ago."
"Iā€¦" Whatever Zhongli had to say, it quickly died in his throat. "I am deeply sorry for your loss, (Y/N)."
You smiled at him, partially to assure him that he'd done no harm and partially to lift the heavy atmosphere that had settled over the two of you. You didn't want your first encounter with this man to be over your deceased father and absentee mother.
"You're right, though," you told him. "I have progressed quite a lot. And there's nothing I love more than learning about new things. The true spirit of adventure lies in the knowledge that you gain, the enemies you defeat, and the friendships formed along the way."
Zhongli nodded solemnly, a faint smile on his lips. "I couldn't agree more."
"There's so much more to see, so many sights and sounds to experience. And Liyueā€¦" You sighed dreamily. "I stuck around for a couple of months for some commissions prior to my moving here, but I feel like I've yet to scratch the surface. The land is just teeming with stories and rich in history; some of the libraries here hold scrolls dating from even before the Archon War!"
Zhongli set his cup down yet again, lacing his hands together and propping his chin up against them. For the briefest of moments, you'd noticed his deviance from basic table manners, but all you were thinking about was what you've learned so far from the Nation of Contracts.
You were practically vomiting words at this point. "I even got myself into a little tiffy with some scholars at one of the tea houses...they were waxing poetic about how the first Mora ever created by Rex Lapis was something extra special, and it should be stored away in a museum.ā€
ā€œAnd what did you say to that?ā€
ā€œI said it wasnā€™t anything special. Just your average Mora, much like the ones we use every day.ā€ You spun one of the coins Childe had left on the table. ā€œI believe Rex Lapis would rather every single Mora be used in the way it was intended to be used.ā€
ā€œI couldnā€™t agree more.ā€ Zhongli took another sip of his tea. ā€œI have been making the same argument for quite some time now.ā€
ā€œOh, you must not be popular at tea houses now, either.ā€
Zhongli laughed with you, and it was a warm, fluttery feeling that spread throughout your entire chest.
Soon, you'd made your way out of Liuli Pavillion, having eaten your fill and having exhausted all of your stories with Zhongli.
"I can help with your research, if you'd allow me," he suddenly said, before you parted ways. "I do not wish to flatter myself, but I do know a thing or two about Liyue."
"You certainly do, judging from our conversations earlier," you agreed. "That would be very helpful, thank you. But how is it that you know so much, Mr. Zhongli? Did your father teach you?"
"Just Zhongli is fine." His eyes seemed to glow like molten gold. "And yes, my dear. My father taught me."
Tumblr media
And so began a new chapter in your life in Liyue, one that had you spending your days with the educatedā€”if not a little eccentricā€”consultant of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. He made good on his promise, freely offering you his aid and declining any attempts of yours to pay for it. You were getting worried that you were practically taking advantage of him, as you found that you needed his help quite a lot, but he would always simply wave off any of your protests with a fond smile on his face, assuring you that your understanding of the city was enough compensation.
The only consolation that you got from never being able to repay him in kind was the fact that he seemed more than happy to talk about anything with you. You were an eager student, and it helped that Zhongli was a wonderful teacher, never once dismissing any of your thoughts as foolish or far-fetched. He spoke with a refinement that most men could only dream of having, his patience seemingly stretched all the way to the heavens, and his wisdom seemed beyond what was expected of anyone his age (which, you never really got to ask about).
His line of work was more than enough material to work with, as he constantly dabbled in different ceremonies for the dead, one of the key practices in Liyueā€™s culture. Initially, heā€™d been a little reluctant to let you in on some of the more morbid aspects of the job. He later relented, after you assured him that you were able to handle them, though he still kept you out of the room during the more ā€œhands-onā€ moments.
When you werenā€™t out on commissions, you could always be found in one of Liyueā€™s many libraries, your nose buried in a book or a scroll youā€™d dug out of the deepest recesses of the bookshelves. Zhongli sometimes joined you, offering explanations on articles you didnā€™t understand and deciphering characters you found difficult. On days that work called his focus away, he would write some recommendations and leave it at the Guild for you to find. Other times, he would catch up with you over dinner, speaking about Liyue and debating historical facts until the night melted into the morning.
Though Mondstadt was forever in your heart, despite the memories attached to it, it was incredibly easy to fall in love with Liyue. You loved watching the sun rise above the harbor, painting the city with vibrant shades of red and gold. Youā€™d remarked that perhaps this was the reason why Rex Lapis had moved his people here, of all places.
(ā€œAside from it being an ideal place for trade, yes,ā€ heā€™d replied, sounding oddly wistful. ā€œThat might be one of the reasons.ā€)
You enjoyed milling through the market, hearing the merchants inviting people to look over their wares and the exchanging of gossip (which you admittedly indulged in on your many grocery trips). But the marketplace, apparently, was not the best place for Zhongli; your eyes had nearly popped out of their sockets when he told you that heā€™d given over a monthā€™s worth of his salary to a gentleman who promised him a tenfold return in six months.
(ā€œHe was rather persuasive, you know,ā€ he later told you.)
Days stretched into months, and it seemed like you knew Liyue as well as you knew the back of your hand. Your expertise eventually got you a promotion at the Guild: a top spot in the Intelligence Department, which allowed you access to more of the Guildā€™s files detailing experiences from other Adventurers. You were over the moon when you told Zhongli the good news, and though he didnā€™t squeal and jump up and down as you did, his smile was worth a million Mora. Childe was also in town then, and the three of you celebrated over a lavish dinner and some drinks on the side.
Even with Childe constantly getting on your nerves, Zhongli acted like a balm of sorts to ease the tension in the air. You found your bond with the Harbinger slowly turning into a real friendship, taking his constant challenges and snide remarks as harmless jokes that you easily passed back to him. Zhongli was only too happy to be a spectator, occasionally laughing whenever you and Childe exchanged playful jabs.
He looks so much better when he laughs, you thought.
As if heā€™d heard your thoughts, Zhongli tilted his head in your direction. You dropped your gaze as soon as it met his, and forced a laugh at one of Childeā€™s stories.
(You pray he doesnā€™t hear the hammering of your heart in your chest, either, as he walks your drunk asses home.)
Tumblr media
ā€œXiangling!ā€
ā€œAh, (Y/N)!ā€ The Wanmin Restaurantā€™s youngest and most talented chef returned your call just as she served a steaming bowl of black-back perch stew to a delighted customer. ā€œCome in, come in.ā€
ā€œPlease excuse the intrusion,ā€ you announced, waving at Chef Mao with a smile before taking a seat at your usual table. Chongyun and Xingqiu, two of Xianglingā€™s closest friends, sent you a friendly wave before going back to whatever novel Xingqiu had with him.
ā€œHere you are,ā€ Xiangling said, setting your order down in front of you. ā€œCareful, itā€™s still hot!ā€
ā€œAnything else I should be careful about?ā€ you teased, alluding to the time she had served you an experimental dish that had your stomach in knots all afternoon.
Xianglingā€™s cheeks turned pink. ā€œThat was the first time I used a combination of Dendro and Pyro slimes. I thought it would give a little more of a kick.ā€
ā€œIā€™m kidding, Xiangling. It looks great.ā€
Xiangling finally beamed, and seeing as there were no customers to serve at the present time, she allowed herself to sit in front of you as you ate. ā€œSo, what have you got for me this time?ā€
As soon as youā€™d swallowed your first bite, you dug around in your bag and brought out your notebook, the one reserved for recipes youā€™ve discovered around Liyue. Most of them were from the library, others from restaurants seeking to preserve their cuisine, and a small percentage were from locals who were willing to sit down and chat about some of their favorite recipes. You werenā€™t a bad cook, but you needed the input of a local chef, which Xiangling was only happy to fulfill.
It had surprised Zhongli when youā€™d told him of your intention to document Liyueā€™s cuisine, with the idea that food was just as important as buildings, attitudes, and language when it came to culture. Liyue, the center of trade and divided into two warring cuisines, was practically a holy grail for culinary enthusiasts. He of course agreed wholeheartedly, and handed over his own specialty, a slow-cooked bamboo shoot soup.
ā€œHmm.ā€ Xiangling scanned your notes. ā€œIā€™ve heard about some of these, but the techniques are pretty dated. You could probably make do with some modern supplies, like using cuihua wood instead of rosewood...aw, but it isnā€™t going to have that sweet tangy note to the soup...well, unless you add an extra teaspoon of sugarā€¦ā€
ā€œHey, (Y/N),ā€ Chongyun came over and sat at your table, all smiles as he bit off a part of his popsicle. ā€œLost Xiangling already?ā€
ā€œYeah,ā€ you sigh in amusement, watching Xiangling mutter to herself, fully engrossed in your notes. ā€œLiyueā€™s cuisine is a lot more complicated than I thought. Whereā€™s Xingqiu?ā€
ā€œHe was called back home. Something about the cor lapis supply...I have no idea how heā€™s involved in that.ā€
ā€œCor lapis!ā€ Xiangling snapped her fingers. ā€œHave you considered stone boiling, but with cor lapis instead of your normal everyday rock?ā€
Chongyun sighed.
ā€œAh, well, if it worksā€¦ā€ You werenā€™t too enthusiastic about going all the way to Mt. Aocang to harvest some cor lapis on a whim, but who were you to know? ā€œIn any case, I feel I need a little more hands-on help. How about a barbecue on Saturday night? Iā€™ll bring all the supplies you need.ā€
ā€œOoh, that soundsā€”ack!ā€ Xiangling yelped, her hand darting down to massage the foot that Chongyun had crushed under his heel. If you hadnā€™t checked to see what happened under the table, you would have seen Chongyun gesture sharply at the entrance of the restaurant, causing Xiangling to cough loudly.
ā€œIā€”I mean, Iā€™m sorry, (Y/N), I just remembered I have a large delivery on Sunday! Yeah, lots of spicy chop sueyā€¦maybe Mr. Zhongli can go instead!ā€
ā€œZhongli?ā€
ā€œMe?ā€ A smooth baritone voice cut through the conversation, and you turned in your seat to see the man himself, the director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor peeking from behind his arm.
ā€œRight, Hu Tao?ā€ If you hadnā€™t again been so distracted by Zhongliā€™s mere presence, you would have definitely seen Chongyun and Xiangling frantically gesturing for Hu Tao to play along. ā€œA barbecue to help (Y/N) figure out how to create this recipe!ā€
ā€œHmm.ā€ Hu Tao crossed her arms, her usual devilish smirk playing across her features. ā€œI donā€™t knowā€¦ā€
ā€œHu Tao!ā€ Chongyun hissed.
ā€œHehe, of course!ā€ Hu Tao patted Zhongliā€™s arm like they were best buddies, and you had to laugh at the way Zhongli stiffened at the contact. ā€œYouā€™ll go, Mr. Zhongli, right? It wouldnā€™t be nice to keep (Y/N) all alone in the dark at this time of the year.ā€
ā€œWhatever do you mean, director?ā€
ā€œAiya, Iā€™m just saying, a gentleman as refined as yourself should be able to keep (Y/N) company and keep them safe at the same time, right?ā€
ā€œR-really, itā€™s fine,ā€ you laughed weakly, waving your arms. ā€œZhongliā€™s busy, and heā€™s probably tired after all the work heā€™s done today, soā€¦ā€
ā€œNot entirely,ā€ Zhongli said. ā€œI always have time for you, (Y/N).ā€
Silence fell. With rapidly warming cheeks, you turned to see Xiangling pursing her lips, evidently trying not to laugh, and Hu Taoā€™s signature shit-eating grin lighting up her entire expression.
ā€œWell, then,ā€ Chongyun coughed, trying to break the tension. ā€œThat settles it! Ah, Xiangling, you have a customer waitingā€¦ā€
ā€œThatā€”thatā€™s right!ā€ Xiangling finally said, in between giggles. ā€œHu Taoā€”right thisā€”heheā€”right this way, please!ā€
You had no other choice but to watch Xiangling, Chongyun, and Hu Tao dash out of the restaurantā€™s premises, giggling up a storm and slapping each otherā€™s arms.
Zhongli turned to you. ā€œHave I said something?ā€ he asked.
Tumblr media
ā€œ...and...there!ā€ You stabbed the last of the vegetables through the stick, and held it up to the glow of the moonlight. ā€œHow are you doing, Zhongli?ā€
Zhongli hummed in response, clicking the tongs as he flipped the meat he was grilling to its other side. ā€œThis is almost done,ā€ he replied. ā€œHow do you like your meat? Well done?ā€
ā€œA little on the rare side, please.ā€
ā€œAlright.ā€
You placed the last skewer onto the plate, before leaning back and stretching. Youā€™d figured that the best you can do in exchange for Zhongli agreeing to your little getaway was to let him pick the location, and you were so glad that you didā€”heā€™d picked out a spot on Mt. Tianheng that overlooked Liyue Harbor, letting you see the city in all its gilded splendor. Admittedly, it was a little difficult getting all the way up to it (even more so for Zhongli, who insisted on carrying the brazier that Xiangling had lent you), but the view at the top was completely worth it.
Soon enough, you had set down the basket and spread out a large table cloth (that youā€™d unceremoniously yanked from your dinner table when Zhongli came to pick you up) onto the grass, and you began grilling away, with no regard whatsoever for the recipes that you were supposed to be following.
Zhongli set the tongs down, and leaned over to check the skewers. He nodded in satisfaction. ā€œExcellent work,ā€ he noted. ā€œI suppose we can grill half of these and leave the other half for you to grill by yourself at home.ā€
ā€œDonā€™t be silly, Zhongli,ā€ you said, nudging his arm playfully. ā€œYouā€™re getting a portion to take home, too.ā€
ā€œOf course, of course.ā€ Zhongli held up one of the first sticks youā€™d skewered with a slight grin, remarking without words the haphazard way youā€™d cut up the vegetables. You scowled and attempted to snatch it away, but he held it out of your reachā€”which, even as he was sitting down, was practically miles away from your armā€™s length.
ā€œZhongli.ā€
ā€œHmm?ā€
ā€œYouā€™re being mean.ā€
Zhongli chuckled. ā€œMy apologies. Youā€™re adorable when youā€™re angry.ā€
You snatched the failed skewer away from him and quickly turned away. ā€œYou...you shouldnā€™t say things like that.ā€
ā€œLike what?ā€
ā€œYou know what.ā€
ā€œI truly donā€™t.ā€
(Is he being serious?)
You snuck a look at him over your shoulder, and when you found the amused smirk still on his face, you huffed and crawled over to the grill, retrieving the meat that was about to go up in smoke.
ā€œOh?ā€ You glanced over to see Zhongli flipping through one of your notebooks. ā€œI know this song.ā€
ā€œSeriously? Archons, just how old are you, Zhongli?ā€
Zhongli just smiled, as heā€™s always done when faced with the question of his age, and instead began to sing one of the lyrics off the page.
You didnā€™t expect to hear his singing voice now, of all times, under the glow of the moon and surrounded by the smell of barbecue and osmanthus wine. It was just as smooth and velvety as his normal speaking voice, washing over your entire figure like water over stones.
Before you knew it, you were singing along with him, as if youā€™d known the song all this time. The alcohol in your veins occasionally kicked your voice off-key, which only sent the two of you into hysterics; paired with full bellies and the cool winds of spring, you felt as if you were flying.
You werenā€™t sure if Zhongli was riding the same high as you were, given his typical reserved nature, but all doubts were dispelled when he leaned towards you, right as you were about to hit the chorus.
You wondered then, why those words sounded louder than the notes bouncing off the walls of Mt. Tianheng.
When you glanced over at him, your breath hitched; his eyes looked just like the setting sun.
Tumblr media
The rising sun bathes the entire room in a soft light, but you feel none of its warmth.
The coldest area was, in fact, next to you; the only indicator that someone had occupied the space was a cup that had not been there the night before present on the nightstand. That aside, Zhongliā€™s side of the bed was pristine, clean, andā€”ultimatelyā€”empty.
You sit up with a tired grunt, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes and letting the dawn of a new day settle on you. You stare at the cup on the nightstand and sigh, the initial hope that this morning would be different from all the mornings prior to today quickly turning to resignation.
Still, it would not do for you to mull in your sadness, so you push the covers off you and make your way to the kitchen. It all seemed predetermined to you, the way that you just knew that there would already be breakfast on the table, covered with a net to keep the flies away. You also knew beforehand that the house would be, just like his side of the bed, free of dirt and grime (only for them to accumulate once more, given that neither of you were ever truly home all the time).
If he has time to clean the house and make breakfast, he has time to kill in the mornings, you think bitterly.
Instead of sucking it up and eating anyway, you sit at the table, refusing to touch a single ceramicā€”in a quiet sort of defiance.
You sit there for seemingly hours, watching the sunlight filter through the broken window in the kitchen, illuminating the dust particles dancing in the air like snowflakes. The house is quiet, except for the chirping of birds, sweeping in the streets, and the occasional idle chatter. It was the noise you were used to, having lived alone for months prior to when he came along, but for some reason, it was different this time.
This silence was louder, more deafening. Void. Empty. Like the hole thatā€™s made its home in your heart, festering and growing in size over the weeks. If you listened closely, you could hear the wind whistling through the gap, like a canyon void of all life; as a child of freedom, a child of Mondstadt, the wind had always been your source of comfort. Now, all it did was remind you of just how much youā€™d carved yourself out for the people you held most dear.
Wordlessly, and as if guided by some unknown force, you place your hand over your heart. It beats, as of course it must, but the crater presses against your lungs; now, you no longer wonder why itā€™s been so difficult to breathe lately.
It was perfect. Everything had been so perfect, but looking back, you had most likely baited yourself into it. But who could blame you, with a lover that felt like the first spring after eons of winter?
You would cry, but no tears spring to your eyes. They must have fallen into the abyss, too.
Your eyes flicker to the sitting room instead, and try as you may, you see no signs of Zhongli having occupied any of the cushions. You scoffā€”in scorn or in sadness, you no longer know.
But something else catches your eye: the book sitting dangerously at the edge of the coffee table. Usually, stray books lying around are a common occurrence in your house, but you know why this one piques your attention.
Tumblr media
ā€œWhoā€™s Guizhong?ā€
When you received no immediate reply, you glanced over your shoulder in questioning. Your lover stood in the kitchen with his back to you, shoulders taut and back stiff, even more so than usual.
ā€œI would have thought youā€™d come across that name sooner,ā€ he replied. ā€œItā€™s basic Liyue history.ā€
ā€œMm.ā€ You returned your attention to the book that one of the older scholars had recommended to you. ā€œI just never really went in depth with the subject. Who better to ask thanā€”ā€
ā€œIā€™ve forgotten.ā€
You glanced at him again, this time in surprise. For a moment, you hear nothing but the sound of the kettle clinking over the fire.. The silence that had fallen over you felt as heavy as mountains, and you opened and closed your mouth, trying to find the words to shake them off you.
ā€œI didnā€™t meanā€”ā€
ā€œI know.ā€ Zhongli turned on his heel sharply, patting his hands dry on his pants before walking over to you to kiss the top of your head. ā€œIā€™m going out.ā€
You scrambled to your feet, tossing the book back on the table as you watched Zhongli pull his coat on. ā€œZhongli, please, Iā€™m sorryā€”ā€
ā€œNo, my darling, thatā€™s not it. I just remembered Iā€™d be meeting a client today.ā€
ā€œAt this hour?ā€ Your throat was rapidly closing, sending you into tunnel vision as Zhongli stepped down to slip into his shoes.
(Where have you seen this scenario before?)
ā€œIt can wait until tomorrow, surelyā€¦ā€
ā€œIā€™m afraid not. I just remembered at the last second, and I donā€™t want to risk the director spiking my afternoon tea with Jueyun Chili again.ā€
That drew a small laugh from you, but that was all it took for Zhongliā€™s features to soften. He gathered your face in his hands and kissed you gently, reverently, so much so that your knees felt as if they were about to give out at any time.
When he finally pulled away, he studied your face for a minute, before closing his eyes again and sighing.
ā€œDonā€™t wait up,ā€ he whispered, before pecking your nose and disappearing out the door.
You stared as the door closed in your face, the sound of the kettle screeching fading to white noise in the background.
Tumblr media
Two days.
Heā€™d been gone two days after that.
ā€œDonā€™t wait up,ā€ heā€™d told you. And he had the audacity to look surprised, when he finally came home, to see you nursing a cup of tea in the sitting room, with heavy bags under your eyes.
And so the cycle had begun. Heā€™d disappear for days on end, under a new excuse every single time, though the work-related ones had quickly disappeared under a concerned Hu Taoā€™s thumb. When you had spoken to the director, you prayed she wouldnā€™t notice the quiver in your voice, nor the slight panic that had taken over your expression when sheā€™d disclosed the truthā€”Zhongli had suddenly picked up the habit of skipping work.
But of course, he denied it all when youā€™d confronted him.
Heā€™d come home every now and then, and though it left a bitter taste in your mouth, you attempted to check for signs that heā€™d been with someone elseā€”lingering perfume, marks on his immaculate skin, anythingā€”alas, there were none. For now, at least.
Zhongli, in his infinite wisdom, honestly believed that keeping the house neat and tidy and leaving food on the table would be enough to make up for his frequent absences. You wouldā€™ve told him that a single conversation would be enough to help you make sense of thingsā€”if he was ever home whenever you were.
It had gotten so bad that you yourself had lagged behind on your own work, instead spending the nights as you had when you first arrived at Liyue all those years ago: drowning your sorrows in bottles of wine. And then youā€™d stumble home alone, the lanterns hanging around swirling like comets in the sky as you attempted to navigate through the streets.
If only finding him was as easy as making your way home after one too many drinksā€¦
...you slowly sit up straight.
You didnā€™t need to wait for himā€”not when you could just go out and find him yourself.
How simple. You chuckle to yourself, feeling light-headed at the utter absurdity of the whole situation. You know Zhongli wouldnā€™t question it this time. Youā€™ve been known to follow him around, after all, knowing you were bound to learn something new from your encyclopedia of a lover when you were out in the open.
When your hands finally find themselves around the now cold teapot, you wonder what you would learn from him this time around.
And if it was something worth learning about, you wonder again, when you find him all by his lonesome in Guili Plains, your front covered in blood from clearing the hilichurl camp youā€™d come across on your way.
Tumblr media
You grunted as you hauled yourself up, marking the end of your arduous journey to the spot Zhongli had requested to meet at. Liyue sprawled out beneath you, glittering under the blanket of night, but you barely spared it a glanceā€”not when the person you were aching to see stood right in front of it.
Standing there, you found yourself at a loss for words. The weeks following the incident on Mt. Tianheng had you avoiding Zhongli like he was the plague, which he did in return. For a while, you attributed it to the sudden increase in commissions as a result of the events of the Rite of Descension; the assassination of the Prime Adeptus, Lord of Geo, Rex Lapis himself had shaken the entirety of Liyue to its core. But once the dust had cleared, and Zhongli finally came knocking on your door this morning, you couldnā€™t kid yourself any longer.
Your thoughts had been a mess; the weight of Zhongliā€™s words that night lurked in the deepest recesses of your mind, and you couldnā€™t help but wonder how much of it was true. Had love, which left you crying by the front door grasping at tailcoats, come back for you once more? Had it finally settled in your life, after years of skirting around the edges and endless promises of never falling prey to its clutches forevermore?
The questions disappeared, seemingly into thin air, when Zhongli finally turned around.
For a minute, you two just stood there, as if time had stilled and all that was left in the world was the weight of his gaze.
ā€œ(Y/N).ā€ He spoke your name with a reverence that one typically reserves for prayer.
You only stared at him in response, heart hammering in your throat.
ā€œI donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever really tested just how much you know about Liyue.ā€ The wind picked up, and you caught the faint scent of Glaze Lilies. ā€œAre you in the mood for some questions?ā€
You finally found the courage to speak. ā€œAsk away.ā€
Zhongli turned back to the sight of Liyue beneath him, and to you, he looked like a god turning his divine gaze on the people below. ā€œThe amber on Mt. Hulao is said to be the work of the adepti, intended to trap intruders, monsters, and humans alike. True or false?ā€
You frowned. ā€œItā€™s not an adeptus power. Amber is created by karst crawlers, most probably as a defense mechanism when something steps on it; the exploration team I sent out came back with a sample.ā€
Zhongli only hummed, and you worked up the nerve to walk over by his side. The familiar scent of incense quickly overpowered the sickly sweet aroma of Glaze Lilies, and you relaxed in its embrace.
ā€œThe goddess of salt, Havria,ā€ he continued. ā€œThe gentle and kind deity who ruled over Sal Terrae who was said to be murdered by Morax at the height of the Archon War. Any thoughts on how this might have come about?ā€
ā€œIā€¦ā€ You blinked in confusion. ā€œI donā€™t...Zhongli, what is all this about?ā€
Zhongli remained silent, seemingly unaware of your bemused state.
You waved your hands helplessly. ā€œThe Archon War was a power struggle between deities of great ability. Fatalities were inevitable.ā€
ā€œSo you donā€™t believe that Morax, who slew countless other gods, gods that he once considered friends, had it in him to cast down another one if it meant clearing the way to becoming one of the Seven?ā€
ā€œIt may not have been Morax at all. Everyone was fighting against someone or something. What does the Lord of Geo have against salt?ā€
Zhongli chuckled, though it sounded a little distant. When he finally turned to you again, his expression was equal parts warm and wistful. He offered you his hands, and you placed your shaking ones in them.
ā€œLast question.ā€ He ran his thumbs over your skin. ā€œYou were there when you saw the Exuvia fall out of the sky at the Rite of Descension, yes?ā€
You nodded.
ā€œThen Rex Lapis is dead.ā€
You felt your skin crawl, like lightning had started coursing through your system from your interconnected hands.
ā€œTrueā€¦ā€ Zhongli cupped the side of your face, cradling it gently. ā€œ...or false?ā€
Looking into his eyes, you already knew the answer.

genshin modern au cheat sheet
iā€™m planning to do more pieces set in this au, so iā€™ve put together a quick list of the characters i'm planning to write about/include!
there are three main groups here - the zhao family, the ragnvindr family and friends, and the Miscellaneous Palsā„¢
(the next volume in this au is going to be a xiao piece, and that should be up within the next two or so days!)
Tumblr media
1. the zhao family
zhongli, 36: history professor at the local uni who also plays the guzheng very well, tea-enjoyer, a very proud and supportive dad who loves his kids more than anything in the universe - probably unironically has so many pictures of them in his wallet
xiao, 23: taking a degree in psychology at the local uni, has a cool motorbike, bit of a control freak, doesnā€™t like surprises, will drop-kick you if you look at him or his sister funny, wants a cat but his dadā€™s allergic, never really grew out of his emo phase
yanfei, 19: baby of the family, prodigy lawyer-in-training, far smarter than many people give her credit for, likes building snowmen, has to protect her unsuspecting dad from Evil Salespeople looking to make some extra money
xiao and yanfei are biological siblings, and zhongli adopted them when xiao was 11 and yanfei was 7. the circumstances of this adoption is a mystery that none of the zhao family members seem willing to divulgeā€¦
the zhao siblings can have a little bit of tragic backstory. as a treat.
basically they were born into poverty and often went hungry for days on end. biological parents were distant and neglecting (though not actually physically/emotionally abusive - yet.)
when xiao was caught shoplifting bread and fruit from a local grocery store so that he and yanfei could actually eat, both parents went ballistic and kicked him out the house in the middle of one of the coldest winters the town had seen
poor kid was practically freezing to death out there, and yanfei raised such a fuss back in the house that mum slapped her square in the face to get her to shut up, which xiao saw through the window, and he promptly decided that he Was Not Putting Up With This Shit for any longer
immediately went to a neighbourā€™s house and told them what was going on, neighbours promptly called cps, and an investigation was launched
parents were deemed unsuitable for raising kids and (after a lot of back and forth) the two kids were taken into care
meanwhile zhongli was kind of sad because he had no friends or family in this town and all he really did was write articles, read books, and mark work
then one of his co-workers mentioned hearing about xiao and yanfeiā€™s story and it hit zhongli so hard that he immediately rang up the adoption centre and ended up taking them in
and from then on both yanfei and xiao were very happy and healthy because zhongli was literally the best dad ever and put everything into taking care of them
2. the ragnvindr family (+ friends)
diluc, 29: budding businessman who still works at his dadā€™s cafe but is looking to open up his own company some time soon, still buys himself juice in those little cartons with the straws, still doesnā€™t know how raising bread works?? how does it get bigger???
diona, 7: dilucā€™s adopted daughter who has her father firmly under her thumb, bit of a spitfire but can also be the sweetest kid ever, enjoys making ā€˜potionsā€™ out of grass and flowers and water (diluc can and will actually drink these potions because his love for his daughter knows no bounds)
kaeya, 25: dilucā€™s idiot little brother whoā€™s changed majors at least five times and still doesnā€™t really know what he wants to do, practises fencing and horse riding in his spare time like a nerd, spoils his niece rotten
lisa, 26: the first of kaeyaā€™s three roommates, has a degree in english and could easily have gone on to become a leading scholar but chose to instead open a bookshop that gets way more business than expected because sheā€™s pretty and men and women alike are all simps
albedo, 23: the second of kaeyaā€™s roommates, bit of a genius, has already started his chemistry phd, is almost concerningly pale and exhausted at all times, has not gone a day without breaking one of the cups for at least two years
venti, 21: the third of kaeyaā€™s roommates, studying music, acts way older than he is sometimes but is mostly just a child, asks at least one of his roommates to marry him every day without fail, was and still is both a music and a theatre kid
lisaā€™s actually the one who owns the roommatesā€™ residence because itā€™s on top of her bookshop
i was going to keep the whole ragnvindr family trauma thing but i decided that diluc deserved to be happy in at least one au so the brothers are still happy brothers :D
unfortunately that means that iā€™ve transferred a lot of the family trauma over to diona
essentially her mother died when she was a baby and her father, draff, turned to alcohol to get him through the stress of raising a child alone. unfortunately this led to him drunk driving one day, and he crashed the car into one of the wallā€™s of dilucā€™s dadā€™s cafe.
draff died on impact since he was in the front seat, but three-year-old diona managed to pull through despite her injuries. one thing led to another, diluc ended up taking care of her for a bit while the authorities sorted the whole thing out, but then he got too attached and decided to adopt her permanently
now diona has a dad, three uncles and an aunt who are all willing to shower her with all the love she deserves :ā€™)))))
3. the Miscellaneous Palsā„¢:
xiangling, xingqiu, chongyun, 17: local high school kids, theyā€™re all kind of dating each other, low-key got adopted by xiao at one point, guoba is xianglingā€™s guinea pig and they all have joint custody over him
barbara, bennett, razor, 17: also local high school kids, also kind of all dating each other (but a lot more tentatively), regulars at dilucā€™s cafe, almost never seen apart
lumine, aether, ??: they keep showing up here and there around town to climb a tree and just sit there throwing leaves at people on the streets, then disappear. no one knows who the fuck they are
tartaglia, 23: nicknamed childe by his friends, also known as Mr Moneybags, is always just hanging around the local uni campus but doesnā€™t actually study anything there. his real name is ajax, but he thought that was lame so he gave himself a cool new one
eula, 24: new teacher at the local high school, her father used to be headmaster and was notoriously cruel to his students so everyoneā€™s kind of wary of her, but sheā€™s just really sweet and wants the best for her pupils :(((
amber, 21: number one eula defender, teaches the younger kids at the local primary, likes bunsen burners a little bit too much, still canā€™t remember how to spell the word necessary
hu tao, 25?: shady local mortician who may or may not practise illegal things, was kind of dating yanfei at some point but zhongli sent her packing as soon as he realised who she was, no one knows what her deal is
xianglingā€™s already a budding master chef and has received several offers from culinary schools, xingqiu is planning to study literature/language at uni but also might just go straight to trying to get a book published, chongyun is going to continue the family tradition of studying the supernatural with maybe a side job at xianglingā€™s future restaurant so that he doesnā€™t end up with no money if he doesnā€™t get any supernatural work
barbara is planning to go to medical school and also sings/dances in her spare time, bennett still doesnā€™t know what he wants to do but is considering carpentry among other things, and razor is dead-set on working at either a zoo or an animal shelter when heā€™s older
tartaglia never leaves the house without at least three pocket knives and a water pistol. heā€™s never had to use them yet, but you never know...
eula and amber live together and are probably dating but theyā€™ll both just dodge the question if you ask them about it
theyā€™re most definitely together though because on eulaā€™s birthday amber brought her entire class of little kids to say happy birthday and bring her flowers
(incidentally amber is dionaā€™s teacher)

Can we take a moment to talk about what a tragic character Minerva is? Yā€™all know that for the longest time I havenā€™t been the biggest fan of her, and honestly Iā€™m still not? but I think I mightā€™ve had a breakthrough on why that is.Ā
Whenever Iā€™ve asked around to see why people find her so appealing or why they consider her their favorite, Iā€™ll get answers like, ā€œsheā€™s such a complex character and she deserved a redemption arc!ā€ or ā€œshe shouldā€™ve come back to the school with us! Let Minnie be happy, you cowards! Telltale did her dirty! I could write paragraph after paragraph about her!ā€ all sorts of things along those linesā€¦ but like, no one seems to want to actually talk about her. I find that interesting? Since when I do follow up with a ā€œcare to explain further?ā€ I get nothing. Radio static. Likeā€¦. no, talk to me please, I just wanna understand-
Minerva within the context of TFS is such a tragedy. She grew up in a school for troubled youth where all the adults left them for death at the start of the breakout, they had walkers trying to eat the living all around them, and Iā€™m sure she saw her fair share of traumatic violence and despairā€¦ but on the bright side, she always had her twin sister, Sophie, and little brother, Tenn. She had her friend and eventual girlfriend, Violet. She had music, and a dorm full of pretty paintings done by Sophie. She and Louis composed a song together to make everyone feel better. There are worse places to live than the school.Ā
Then one day she got traded away to a bunch of raiders against her will, having no idea what the hell these people were gonna do to her and Sophie. They were made to be soldiers to fight in a war that had nothing to do with them. The delta fucking broke her. If weā€™re to believe Lillyā€™s story about the twins, they started their brainwashing process early on when Sophie was still alive, and it seems like Minerva was easier to control as Sophie was still planning a way out and causing trouble. Then, when Sophie convinced her to steal a boat and get the hell out, they got caught and the delta forced her to murder her own twin sister.Ā
Likeā€¦. Iā€™m sorry, not only did Minerva kill her own sister, but she was made to believe that was the right thing to do? That line she says about how she had to prove her loyalty to the place she calls home? That shitā€™s ingrained in her brain, you can tell that isnā€™t the first time sheā€™s heard or said that very thing. That is what made her family to the delta. Delta is her home now, her family. Sophie was just a thing that needed to be dealt with. You keep your head down, do as youā€™re told, and you survive.Ā  You survive and you get to go home, eat a hot meal, take a shower, and be with your delta family.Ā  If not, you end up like Sophie.
Whatā€™s also fucked is that Minerva actually cares about these people now. Think about that. After everything they did to her and made her do, sheā€™s been trained to see them as her family and obey. When you save Louis and he kills Dorian, Minerva actually cries out and is visibly hurt by her death. When sheā€™s with the other raiders on land, she's screaming at walkers to get away from them. She cares about the people who made her kill Sophieā€¦ and no one ever talks about that??
She fucking hates Clementine. Clementine is just another thing in Minnieā€™s way. I know the part of the fandom likes to ship these two together and they think itā€™s hot when they fight and shit, but within the canon text, Minerva wants Clementine gone. Dead. She is the thing stopping her from having her old family merge with her new family. If Clementine hadnā€™t made them fight, they all wouldā€™ve been captured and theyā€™d all be a delta family now. She wouldā€™ve had Tenn back.Ā
Clementine is the problem, she made everyone fight back and thatā€™s why people are dead. Minerva hates her for itā€¦ itā€™s not a ā€œI hate you but like the sexual tension, yā€™know?ā€ that I see people pretend it is, itā€™s ā€œyou are ruining everything and if I have to, I will kill you myself and I wonā€™t give a second thought about it when they toss your body overboard.ā€
Likeā€¦.. seriously, think about how fucked up all of this is. Minerva is a husk of who she was before she was taken away. Sure, you do have to keep in mind that when Tenn and Violet are describing her, their sights are a bit clouded, yā€™know? But I do believe that she was someone who was kind and cared about people, she wanted to make people feel safe and comforted.Ā
Now sheā€™s a brainwashed soldier who wonā€™t help the people she used to call friends when theyā€™re about to get limbs cut off. She wonā€™t hesitate to knock someone unconscious or threaten a child.Ā  Sheā€™s willing to trick them into being captured with no regard for whatā€™s going to happen to them. ā€¦ all she knows is this was the mission, and now they all get to be together again back at the delta.Ā
Then when she finds out thereā€™s a bomb on the boat, she ditches Violet to blow up with it in order to make it to land herself. She loses her shit seeing everyone die and gets her face chewed off by a walkerā€¦ and then she tries to blow Clementine and AJ up with a grenade.Ā
Oh, and who can forget the fact that she tracks the group down with plans of murdering Tenn so that they can go to a better place together? And sheā€™ll take down anyone who gets in her way?
Likeā€¦.. jesus christ, Minervaā€™s waaaaay too far gone. Itā€™s awful.Ā
I think thatā€™s what stumps me about why sheā€™s so loved in the way that she is. Itā€™s not that I donā€™t understand why sheā€™s complex and well-written, I get that perfectly fine. Sheā€™s a compelling character study when you comb over all her scenes and take different factors into account.
What I donā€™t understand is why we tend to just throw everything interesting about her away? For what?Ā
These days, I never see anyone talking about any of this unless theyā€™re insisting she deserved a redemption arc whichā€¦. Eh, Iā€™ll touch on this later. What I mostly see here and mostly other platforms is how great it would be if she and Clementine made out, or hey what if she and Violet got back together if she did come back to the school? Or they justā€¦.the best term I have for this is ā€œuwu-ify.ā€ As in sheā€™s reduced to a caricature of a tall, pretty, mean, white lesbian who has ā€œgood damage.ā€Ā
People insist that Telltale are cowards or bastards because their predictions of her turning on the delta to save Clem and crew didnā€™t happen. Instead, Minerva ends up being the final baddie you gotta get away from, and she ends up taking someone down with her. But did you really expect to just do a 180 and suddenly decide being brainwashed for over a year was lame and Clementine and friends are cool? Gonna help them out and be with Tenn again? Sure, thereā€™s some left over trauma but love conquers and fixes everything, right?
Uhā€¦. no? Thatā€™s not how people work? Honestly, if we entertain the idea that Minerva wasnā€™t bit and somehow didnā€™t murder Clementine when they all got back to the schoolā€¦. romance is the last thing she is ever gonna think of??
I think thatā€™s what bothers me most when reading these auā€™s and rants about redemption and the entire idea of clemerva as a whole. Itā€™s the same thing that I see happen with Violet- Minerva only has value to fans if sheā€™s in a wlw relationship. By herself, she doesnā€™t matter. They donā€™t care about her canon story, they donā€™t care about Sophie, they donā€™t care about discussing what couldā€™ve happened if she and Tenn reunited under better circumstances or had a healing recovery together. ButĀ why?
Throwing a girlfriend at her isnā€™t some band aid thatā€™s gonna cover up all the bad she went through?? Having an enemies to lovers romance with Clementine isnā€™t going to fix a years worth of brainwashing, trauma or the fact that she murdered her own sister and the delta told her she's proved her worth to them??Ā
Having the support of those around her is a good thing, donā€™t get me wrong. The idea of the Ericson crew as a whole trying to help her out and do the best they can to accommodate her is bittersweet since thereā€™s only so much they can do. Theyā€™re not trained therapists, which is what Minerva would need and plenty of years ahead of her to work through and come to terms with everything that happened as well as taking steps forward. Iā€™m not saying that she shouldnā€™t have friends or that she couldnā€™t have a healthy romantic relationship someday... but that isnā€™t the solution, yā€™know?Ā
I donā€™t know how else to explain this, but it makes me feel weird that all of this stuff is flat out overlooked or doesnā€™t appear to matter to fans of her.Ā
Look, I get it. We all want these characters to be happy. AUā€™s are a thing, after all. Sometimes we want to forget about the bad things and focus on the good that bring us comfort. You wanna gush about the idea of an AU where the twins never got traded, the raiders didnā€™t exist, and Clementine got to meet them the way they were before? I feel that, AUā€™s are super comforting and fun to explore, and my point isnā€™t to try and shame anyone who has an AU you like this.Ā
Hell, you think I donā€™t have days where I pretend mute Louis isnā€™t a thing because the whole concept of Louis having his tongue cut out of his mouth breaks my fucking heart? No, lotā€™s of days I just want to forget everything about that route, I want to set aside all the bad and just intake as much clouis fluff as I can getā€¦. But that doesnā€™t mean I always ignore or refuse to acknowledge the bad just because I donā€™t like it. I fucking hate the fact that Louis loses his tongue when you donā€™t save him, but guess what? Thatā€™s a canon route you can play, just like any other route, and the possibilities that come with a mute Louis are vast and compelling.Ā
This is how it is for meā€¦ my favorite characters are my favorite for a reason, and I take all the bad with the good. Louis isnā€™t perfect, and I donā€™t want him to be. I was to dive into his backstory about why did that to his parents, I like to talk about what he went through with Marlonā€™s murder and his feelings about AJ and Clementine at the point, I like to view his love of music as bittersweet. He can stand on his own, and while he is a love interest for Clementine, that isnā€™t his only purpose.Ā
I know everyoneā€™s different, they express their love for characters in their own ways, but I do have a genuine question: do you guys actually like Minerva?
Believe it or not, Iā€™m not trying to step on toes or make everyone feel defensive which I know is how people will react to this.Ā ā€œYouā€™re just saying all of this to make us feel bad for shipping clemerva! You donā€™t even like Minnie so you donā€™t get to say shit!ā€ yeah yeah, I hear you and look, itā€™s true that sheā€™s not my favorite character. I know Iā€™ve said I hate her in the past but upon reflection and throwing out fandom interpretations.... I donā€™t hate her. I get it now. Sheā€™s a great character study to dissect and analyze and I think she deserves more than what the writers and the fandom have given her.Ā
And yeah, what I do hate is clemerva, and Iā€™ve explained why. Itā€™s not for me, it makes me uncomfortable, but at the end of the day, who cares? Me not liking it doesnā€™t mean anything to those who create AUā€™s for them. They have their reasons, they can do as they please as long as theyā€™re not hurting anyone. Iā€™m just here pointing out things I see and things that bother me in hopes of starting a discussion.
Thereā€™s my ramble about Minerva. Iā€™m gonna go make some tea now.Ā

Professor Layton Iceberg Explanation
As I said in the tags of the original, the iceberg I made was a meme consisting of both real theories and satire/parodies/fandom memes. If anyone is interested, I can work on an unironic version that only has real theories.
Buckle in because this post is LONG and heavily saturated with lore and information.
Tumblr media
Actual theories
Parallel universe 1960s where the world wars didnā€™t happen. Thereā€™s an unused file in Curious Village that shows the year as 1960 and the time machine from UF is set to 1973, ten years into the future. The series canonically takes place in an undefined time period (hence the technological inaccuracies and fantasy elements), but itā€™s based off the 60s. Thereā€™s more evidence but we donā€™t have time to go over every little thing. I linked my ā€œno warsā€ theory below but TL;DR the outdated airplanes and underdeveloped medicine in the Layton series imply that the world wars may never have happened. https://cayenne-twilight.tumblr.com/post/632205992162099200/outofcontextdiscord-timegearremix-zonosils-war
The real meaning behind the statue in Future London. In UF, the purpose of the statue is to spark Layton and Lukeā€™s conversation about their friendship. Luke is stressing out about moving overseas and sees himself and the professor in the story behind the statue, but in the bigger picture, Clive must have been the one to commission it. Some theorize that the little boy is Clive and the man is either his father or the professor. One idea Iā€™ve seen is that Clive wishes he could be Luke for real, while another is that he wishes he died ten years ago, and another is that heā€™s literally terminally ill explaining why he doesnā€™t care about consequence. Personally, I think ā€œthe boy succumbed to his illnessā€ refers to his mental illness seeing as he wanted the professor to save him from his madness as he saved him all those years ago.
True location of Monte Dā€™Or. there are no deserts on the British isles to my knowledge, so it makes the most sense for Monte Dā€™Or to be in Southwest USA where English is the default language, they have a desert, and there exists a city famous for flashy hotels, casinos, and entertainment. What makes it odd is that nobody ever mentions overseas travel, and all the major characters are from England.
Looshaā€™s origins are not explicitly explained if I remember correctly, but the implication was that her prehistoric (supposedly) species was sealed away along with the garden, allowing them to survive all the way to the time of LS until Loosha was the only one left. The garden provided a good habitat and protection from predators, and itā€™s logical that theyā€™d slowly die out anyways, but thereā€™s no explanation of any specific factors that led to Loosha being the last.
Beasley is not a bee I wrote a post about this one as well, but TL;DR Beasly lacks several defining bee traits whilst having several human ones. He is not human, yet, by definition, not a bee. Itā€™s possible that he is the result of Dimitriā€™s testing, but whatever his untold story is, he remains an enigma of nature. https://cayenne-twilight.tumblr.com/post/632381715250282496/theory-beasly-isnt-a-bee
Subject 2ā€™s identity is currently unknown. There is a subject one (parrot) and subject 3 (rabbit) so there has to be a second. For a long time, people suspected Beasly to be him seeing as heā€™s a bit of an amalgamation and definitely not a regular bee (see above). After the release of LMJ, though, people began to suspect Sherl, the intelligent hound who could speak to certain people but not others. That being said, itā€™s possible for one to be subject 4. Sherlā€™s memory of a bright flash matches up with subject 3ā€™s memory of being electrocuted. They never explain why the animals were being experimented on, but it was probably Dimitri making sure the conditions of his machine were safe for humans before reliving the incident from ten years ago.
Lady Violet died from the plague from DB. Thereā€™s no evidence for this or anything, itā€™s just an idea. People say she died from the flu but I donā€™t remember them saying that in the game, at least the US version. Extending off my ā€œno warā€ theory: itā€™s theorized that the Spanish Flu was spread by the travlelling soldiers, so if thatā€™s true, itā€™s possible for the epidemic to have been averted for some decades. Maybe the Spanish Flu reached England later than in real life. The hole in this is that DBā€™s plague mustā€™ve been close in time to 1918 while Violetā€™s death was much later, so it wouldā€™ve had to stick around.
Bill Hawks is working with Targent and Arthur Cantabella. There was a force in the shadows buying the time machine technology from Bill. Someone with a ton of money who helped him cover up a freak accident and get away with it completely, a feat that involved shady means like violence by hired thugs. Some theorize that it was Targent, seeking power over time in exchange for a little mafia magic. The Labarynthia project was sponsored by the UK government, so as the PM, Bill mustā€™ve known about it. He probably supported dubiously ethical, high stakes (witch pun) psychological experiments like Cantabellaā€™s and helped him stay in the shadows.
All the NPCs in St. Mystere and Folsense are dead. I make fun of this type of theory later, but theyā€™re admittedly captivating. Iā€™m pretty sure the canon in CV is that the villagers are Bruno and Augustusā€™s OCs that they made robots of and built a town around, but itā€™s more interesting to think that the village was there before, and the townspeople died of a plague and were replaced like Lady Violet. In Folsense, there really was a plague and they never explain the NPCs there. Theyā€™re either real people who appear way younger than they are due to hallucinations (even the ones who already look old ?), or they donā€™t exist at all, which is pretty spooky. This part of the story is a gaping plot hole. In a similar vein to CV, the edgy yet plausible theory is that they used to live in Folsense but died of the plague and now live on as hallucinations.
Hershel seeing everything as a puzzle is a coping mechanism for all his trauma. This was a joke but I thought about it for more than five seconds and it makes way too much sense.
Plot holes and unexplained questions that we like to overthink because itā€™s fun
The downfall of the Azran was vaguely explained in canon by people being so greedy that it lead to the civilization collapsing. Itā€™s not a stretch to imagine that happening, but it wouldā€™ve been more interesting with a little more detail.
Layton and Luke are programmed to routinely forget how to walk. I didnā€™t know whether to list this in the joke section or not, but itā€™s odd that the characters actively participate in the walking tutorial (as opposed to showing a little memo to the player) as if they didnā€™t know how to before, especially when they go through this several times a year.
The truth behind Pavel. Heā€™s simply a joke character who teleports, is a polyglot (sort of, at least he wants us to think he is) and is mega confused all the time. Heā€™s a fun character to make crack theories about because of his cryptic nature that even he doesnā€™t seem to understand.
Miracle Mask deleted scenes. The first trailer for MM featured animations that were not in the final game. One was the Randall falling scene, except in a slightly different style than the one we know. Others were completely foreign, like Layton and Luke pacing across a theatre stage as if Laytonā€™s about to expose someone with a dramatic point. Cut content and ā€œcouldā€™ve beensā€ are always curious to think about.
Evan Barde: secret mastermind. Arianna and Tonyā€™s dad is a mysterious character who died under mysterious circumstances. I think the canon is that his death was a genuine accident, but concept art of him making a creepy evil face suggests that maybe he originally had a larger role in the first drafts of LS than the finished game.
The secret to how Paul and Des pull off their disguises is unclear and will remain unclear. There is no plausible explanation for their shape shifting. Unless Paul is just a little dude wearing a human suit like that one Wizard of Oz species and Des is the best quick-changer ever and hides his naturally feminine legs under his cloak.
Alfendiā€™s mom. When LBMR came out people scrambled to piece together who Hershel had a kid with, but thereā€™s no way alfendi is his biological son. This happened with Kat as well and her biological parents turned out to be brand new characters, so Iā€™m sure Al will get an adoption backstory if his arc continues, be his parents old major characters or nameless, faceless NPCs.
Granny Riddleton and Stachenscarfen are omnipotent deities. Idk which section this fits best under, but these two characters have some serious power. At first introduction, theyā€™re implied to be robots, but they appear everywhere in later games. They follow the Professor wherever he goes and assist him on his adventures, GR collecting puzzles and housing them by some odd magic, and Stachen teaches you how to walk. They both introduce and supervise the gameplay. By extension, I guess this idea could apply to Albus as well in the prequels. GR and Stachen even had the power to appear in LMJ, something no major character could do. I consider them akin to the velvet room attendants from the Persona games.
Cliveā€™s kill count is a vague subject in the game for the sake of keeping it PG. I donā€™t know if anyoneā€™s ever mathematically estimated the damage he caused, and I sure donā€™t want to try, but the game appears to push the idea that he didnā€™t kill anyone at all, saying they stopped him in the nick of time and things like that, even though we watch him raze the city. If they ever want to bring him back post-time skip, I can see them twisting it so that the mobile fortress cutscene wasnā€™t a linear sequence of events, but instead a compilation of scenes over the course of hours so that London neighborhoods around him could be evacuated and have it make sense. Knowing Level-5, itā€™s more likely that they wouldnā€™t think this deep and do something more lazy, though.
Memes and references
Post-time skip Flora is real references the famous L is real theory from Super Mario 64. Like Luigi in SM64, Flora was also a highly anticipated character who didnā€™t appear in a new game, in this case LMJ or LMDA. In the end, Luigi did become real in the DS port so hopefully Flora is real will be realized as well.
Hershel canā€™t read is a veteran fandom meme referring to how in the first few games, especially Curious Village, Layton asks Luke to read every document out loud for him. Perhaps this was an exercise to improve Lukeā€™s reading skills and independent thinking, or perhaps he was just too lazy or preoccupied to do it himself, but this grew into the joke that our genius Professor was actually illiterate this whole time.
Laytonā€™s smash invitation is hidden in PLvsAA. Itā€™s no secret that the fandom would kill a man to get the Professor into the smash brothers franchise. In PLvsAA one of the puzzle artworks features a goat eating a familiar white envelope with a red stamp, sparking the joke that either Layton or Wright got the invitation their respective fans desired, but it got lost along the way.
The science board is the mysteriously vague organization Don Paolo got kicked out of for the crime of being evil. Itā€™s the epitome of liberal arts majors and art school graduates trying to bs their way around not knowing any science and failing miserably. ā€œHe was very good at all the sciences, but then the CEO of science told him to stop because he was using the power of science for evil scienceā€. They do this again when ā€œDr. Stahngunā€ describes his time machine what with the soolha coils and whatnot.
Hoogland is death cult initiation is a parody of ā€œMario 64 is Freemason initiationā€ which is ridiculous, just like the creepy human sacrifice subplot of AL.
You can see the reflection of someone watching you in Auroraā€™s eye references the famous, creepy Talking Angela theory. In retrospect it wouldā€™ve been funnier if I said Angela instead of Aurora.
Every copy of Professor Layton is personalized references the famous ā€œevery copy of Super Mario 64 is personalizedā€
Cliveā€™s fat ass in HD is a meme that originated from the announcement of UFHD, saying that half of the excited fans wanted to cry again while the other half were simply attracted to Clive. If we want to enter real bottom-section-of-the-iceberg-chart territory then letā€™s say Cliveā€™s character has some sort of psychological siren properties that draw people to him like a magnet and/or Harry Styles.
Things I pulled out of my ass for shits and giggles
Infinite hint coin hack: Iā€™m sure a tech savvy cheater could hack the game for infinite hint coins, but thereā€™s no easy or interesting way. I donā€™t know why someone would do that though, considering a lot of the hints suck and there are puzzle guides on the internet.
Cringy, unused Randall villain monologue. This joke is derived from the actual scrapped MM content as well as deleted content being a popular element of iceberg charts, but itā€™s sadly not real. Wouldā€™ve been hilarious, though.
Last Specter Puzzle 031: Light Height tracks and records childrenā€™s intelligence level. It doesnā€™t, but itā€™s always fun to make fun of arguably THE most ridiculously difficult puzzle in the franchise. (Seriously, do they expect 7+ year olds to know trigonometry???)
Hershel struggles with tea addiction. Hershel from the games drinks tea in moderation, but the manga begs to differ. He has a tea set in the Laytonmobile, and an attempt at teatime while driving causes him to crash.
Folsense is a metaphor for Alzheimerā€™s. This is inspired by those edgy kidsā€™ show theories where everyoneā€™s in hell or something, but nobody has ever said this.
London Life is reality and the plot of the games is all in Lukeā€™s head. Thatā€™s one way to fill every plot hole. How funny would it be if Luke made up crazy characters and stories based off his fellow townspeople Sharkboy and Lavagirl style. ā€œThis dude who lives in a castle and asks people to give him all their money for nothing in return is a vampire from 50 years ago involved in a tragic love storyā€.
Secret ending encoded into Tagoā€™s Head Gymnastics. Itā€™d be crazy if there was, and Dimitri would hound Tago for the secret to time travel. If you didnā€™t know, the Layton games started as an adaption of Akira Tagoā€™s puzzle series, except they decided to add a story to make it more interesting and marketable.
Daily puzzles datamine your DS. Iā€™m bad with technology but is it even possible to datamine a DS??? Idk, but I think my DS lite from 2008 is safe.

ā„ļøKaeya meets a Bunny Girl Senpaiā„ļø
Notes: Kinda crack, references to Kaeyaā€™s backstory,Ā fem reader, heavily based off of/inspired by Bunny Girl Senpai.
ā€œIn which Kaeya questions his sanity over a wild bunny girl that only he could see.ā€
Tumblr media
Sometimes, he wonders if heā€™s finally lost it. After all those years of working in the knights, experiencing the shithole that was his early childhood, and the split that happened between him and the man he still saw as his sworn brother, youā€™d be pleasantly surprised to see how Kaeya still persevered and became the infamous cavalry captain we all know and love today.
And yet there he was, taking a double take on the sight before him during his rounds around the city. More specifically, the sight in question was that of a girl, just around his age--yet unlike him, who at least considered donning on some type of protective wear (wether it was for the weather or public decency, perhaps both), she opted for a less... conventional outfit. It was the bunny ears that really caught his attention though.Ā
Heā€™s less intrigued by the black leotard, tights, and heels and more interested on who you are and why are you doing this. A wild bunny girl, with a vision strapped onto your collar too... you were most certainly a big deal. Yet why did no one bat an eye at you, or at least your appearance?Ā
ā€œYouā€™re staring.ā€ Those were the first words you said to him, and Kaeya blinks--seeing bunny ears nearly obstruct his vision. You could talk. Heā€™s either imagining things even more or it was a sign that you had a mind of your own. Either way, heā€™s still a bit taken aback.Ā ā€œHuh, you can still see me.ā€
ā€œForgive me, I just couldnā€™t help but notice you. What brings you to Mondstadt?ā€ He tries to carry on a conversation--a surmise way for him to ease someone into at least spilling a bit of info on them.
Your next answer caught him off guard.Ā ā€œI live here.ā€ That certainly raised his suspicions. Heā€™s been patrolling around Mondstadt for years, to the point where he knows the familiar faces of regulars at the Angelā€™s Share bar, and even the names and schedules of the knights who guard the city walls. Who exactly were you? Perhaps you were new? But you didnā€™t look like an outsider either... you felt right at home in Mondstadt.
ā€œIā€™m (Y/n) (L/n), part of the Knights of Favonius.ā€ His eyes widened a bit at the revelation. You were part of the knights? ā€œForget what you saw today. Farewell.ā€Ā Before he could inquire further, you had disappeared right there and then.
Kaeya takes it upon himself to immediately read up on you. Records, testimonies from fellow knights, checking your rank, asking Lisa, he did it all. His findings surprised him even more--not much was known about you, and from what he heard, youā€™ve barely even showed your face--or rather, not much have actually seen you around. Some canā€™t even recall your appearance.Ā Yet the records state otherwise. You definitely existed.Ā
And so, Kaeyaā€™s trip down down the rabbit hole had begun. After all, someone had to get to the bottom of this, and frankly, he was pretty much the only one who could, considering the circumstances.
It wasnā€™t long until you noticed his behavior, and it led to another chance encounter. This time, in front of your house. You knew he wouldā€™ve eventually found out in the records, yet you were surprised at his perseverance nonetheless. What was his deal?Ā ā€œCavalry captain, why are you so persistent?ā€
He chuckles.Ā ā€œSo you do know me.ā€You roll your eyes a bit. It was nothing, really. He was a huge a name here after all.Ā
When you ask him why he cared for your case so much, he simply responds like it was common sense. You still donā€™t understand why.Ā ā€Itā€™d be bad for me to let you run off on your own, you know? Especially in that.ā€ His eyes gesture onto your clothing. Right, you almost forgot.Ā ā€œConsider it a favor.ā€
And thus, began your strange friendship with Kaeya.
It started a bit rocky, but as time passed, the two of you started to see past your differences. Petty remarks turned into playful banter, and suspicions were cast aside into genuine fondness--though none of you openly admitted to that.
Kaeya soon learns more of your predicament, after patiently waiting for you to be ready to open up. It started with an incident in your lab--you were testing the limits of elemental reactions, which led to an explosion.Ā
At first, you thought there wouldnā€™t be any side effects, however, you quickly learned that the opposite was true, when Sucrose came to check up on the noise... yet didnā€™t notice you in the room. It only got worse from there.
So, you tried to test another theory. People were sure to notice and have a bigger impression of you in their memory if you caught their attention, right? Perhaps by making a huge impression, itā€™ll trigger a memory--hence causing them to remember. So, you opted for something that would definitely be a sight worth seeing (and remembering, to an extent). That was how you ended up as Mondstadtā€™s wild bunny girl, hopping around the city as a phenomenon waiting to be seen.
Yet somehow, only one man did. And amidst the time you had to bond, wether it was during a quiet meal in your abode after he helped you in getting groceries, or looking through the library for hints to solve your predicament, Kaeya and you proved to be quite the close pair.
Time was ticking however, and you knew that if Kaeya and you couldnā€™t find a solution, then sooner or later, youā€™d be gone for good. Left to be forgotten. A failed experiment.
It was something you never told Kaeya--something you kept hidden in your many papers dedicated in solving your predicament. You kept convincing yourself that it was better this way. He could go back to his knightly duties and continue protecting Mondstadt without an extra burden.
But what you didnā€™t know was thatĀ he found out. It was all adding up, really--the way you started to distance yourself from him, how you began stocking up on food, and the notes he read behind your back when you were away.Ā
...Which meant he also read about the details of your planned experiment to make him lose his memory. And he didnā€™t like the idea one bit. Heā€™d never abandon you after all youā€™ve been through. He hates the very idea of such.
So one day, when you asked him to meet you in front of the gates, wearing that same old bunny girl suit for shits and giggles, he knew what he was getting into. He calculated the time youā€™d finish prepping your little memory loss experiment, and today was the day.
You thought everything was going as planned. Kaeya didnā€™t once suspect the drink you gave him. Your first mistake. Your second was letting your guard down... as Kaeya had immediately chucked the drink into your lips, forcing you to gulp it down, choking in disbelief. Wait... did you see him spit it out right as he did that?!
ā€œYou--ā€ coughing, you look at Kaeya in distraught.Ā ā€œYOU KNEW?!ā€
But the man merely chuckles, quoting a friend that helped him solve the mystery. Of course, in return, he had to submit a full, detailed report on your entire predicament, but he could care less. Thank you Albedo.ā€œWith equal force comes equal reaction.ā€Ā
ā€œI still donā€™t get what you mean--ā€ you stiffen, suddenly feeling eyes on you, several people saying your name. Wait... if they remembered your name, could they see you?
ā€œSo that was where you ran off to,ā€ You almost cry tears of joy when Albedo actually talks to you, walking alongside Sucrose to where you were situated.Ā ā€œI expect a huge explanation on how all of this happened--ā€ he briefly turns to Kaeya.Ā ā€œ--And everything in between.ā€
Still in the high of euphoria, you donā€™t notice the cold night air until Sucrose brings you back to reality.Ā ā€œUm... Ms. (Y/n), not to be rude, but... arenā€™t you cold in that?ā€
You stiffen, your mind wanting you to slap the blue haired man behind you for laughing hysterically in response. Right, almost forgot about that.

Can we have more Bickslow headcannons? And maybe Evergreen, Freed, and Lexus too?
Fuck yeah you can! Iā€™m gonna start with a lot of angst and then move into their dynamics as a team. (this got REALLY long but Iā€™m not sorry)
-I gave you all my HC for Freedā€™s backstory in my last post and mentioned that Freed is the reason that Bickslow and Evergreen joined the guild, so have both their backstories too!Ā
-Bickslow grew up in a travelling circus with several other child performers. It wasnā€™t exactly a nice environment. There were lots of issues and safety hazards and abuse going on behind the scenes, but they were forced to keep smiling and performing through it all.Ā
-Bickslow was especially targeted by the ringmaster because of his magic allowing him to look into peopleā€™s souls. The ringmaster is the one who forced him to wear a helmet when he wasnā€™t using his ability on the crowd for money.Ā
-Because of that, he only had five friends back then, all children younger than he was, who looked up to him both for his tricks and the fact that no matter how upset he was, he had a smile for them.
-one day the tent caught fire during a practice. Bickslow was the only one to make it out alive.Ā
-but considering all the traumatic events they went through, most of the children kept there werenā€™t able to move on, and their spirits lingered in the area... Except for the five kids who were most fond of Bickslow. They stayed near him and talked to him all the time, especially once they realized he could see them. You still have a soul as a spirit after all.Ā
-the town he was in began to think he was crazy because he wasĀ ā€œtalking to the airā€ all the time, and they would continuously call child services to try and take him to an orphanage. The five spirits however, would warn him before they could, and Bickslow used his years of acrobatics skills to stay away from anyone who tried to move him away from where the circus burned down. It may have been a place of trauma, but there were good memories too, and itā€™s all he had.Ā
-So the town tried one last gamble. Who better to adopt a child with mysterious magic that Fairy Tail?Ā
-And Makarov, in an attempt to get Laxus to be more social, decided to send him and Freed.Ā
-It went about as well as youā€™d expect. Laxus tried to fight him while Freed did research on the area and what happened to him.Ā
-Laxus didnā€™t have as much control over his magic as he thought he did at that age, and Bickslow was kicking his ass before Freed showed up and trapped him so they could talk.
-Freed shared his story with him and offered the same thing Laxus once offered him: a home.Ā
-Bickslow cracked soon after that, and told them everything after Freed started asking questions about the town thinking heā€™s crazy while they were on the train back to magnolia.Ā
-While many members of Fairy Tail were unnerved by him, those around their age did their best to make him feel at home. Natsu listened to all his stories about the circus and about the five ghosts who followed him, and Bickslow listened to his stories about the dragons.Ā
-Freed used this time to research Seith magic extensively, and he eventually came across the idea of putting the souls into objects. He and Bickslow worked for weeks to figure out how to do it, and the five spirits became his five main ā€œdolls.ā€Ā
-He of course, asked them if they were okay with being alongside him before putting them inside the tiki dolls, and if he cried when they said there was nowhere else theyā€™d rather be? Well Freed and Laxus werenā€™t going to tell anyone about it.Ā
-Evergreen was both harder and easier to get back to Fairy Tail.Ā
-Like Freed, She was once a part of the noble class, but under a name she never wants to use again.Ā
-When she gained her eye magic, she accidentally turned her mother to stone, and it was all downhill from there. Her father tried to keep her locked in a room, and it worked for a long time.Ā
-Eventually though, she had decided sheā€™d had enough, and snuck out and ran as far away as she could. She kept a ribbon tied around her eyes any time she had to go into town, and learned how to walk while completely blind. This did some damage to her eyesight after several years of doing it.Ā
-it felt like it was too good to be true. She was free and she did odd little jobs in a town far from her original home to earn money for food. it was all she needed..... Until a child tore the ribbon from her face.Ā
-the second she made eye contact, the little boy turned to stone. There was nothing she could do about it except cover her face up again and run.Ā
-her father, however, had notified several guilds about her disappearance and claimed she was dangerous if left alone, so when stories spread about a homeless child turning a boy to stone, it became their first lead in months.Ā
-there was a lull in fighting missions at the time, and something about her magic intrigued Freed. It was an eye magic like his and Bickslowā€™s first magics, and they arenā€™t exactly common. Freed, Laxus, and Bickslow took it upon themselves to take the mission to bring her home.
-She very quickly figured out how to hide herself in the woods and away from people. Freed had to trap the entire area and make it so that eye magics donā€™t work within his barriers before they could even get close to her. It took almost a month.Ā
-And much to their surprise, she was nothing like what they were expecting. After all, they were supposed to be hunting down a noblemanā€™s son, not a daughter.
-Bickslow almost immediately asks her about why she ran away, and Ever looks up at him- then panics as she slams her eyes shut- but he doesnā€™t turn to stone because of Freedā€™s runes, and he explains as such.Ā
-They have a long conversation about why she ran away, and she tells them everything her father did to her, from being locked in her room to being terrified to tell him sheā€™s his daughter and not his son because of his anger issues.
-They realize then and there they canā€™t give her back to him, and Freed comes up with the plan to tell him that they didnā€™t find his son, but rather a random girl with a similar magic, and she can join Fairy Tail instead of staying on the run.Ā
-The only reason she doesnā€™t agree immediatly is because of her eye magic. She couldnā€™t control it, and the idea of turning someone to stone again scared her.
-Freed sent Laxus to buy a pair of glasses without a prescription and a nice dress for her to wear, and he etches runes into the glasses to block her eye magic when theyā€™re on.
-Sheā€™s sold from that moment on, and the raijinshuuā€™s friendship is sealed with that secret.Ā
-Laxus helps her chose her name before they get onto the train, and they solidify the story before then tooĀ Ā
-Makarov Accepts the story without question, even though they have a sneaking suspicion he knows.Ā
-They become a tight knit group in no time.Ā
-Then they learn about Ivan and all he did to Laxus, and they start to jokingly refer to themselves as the Laxus protection squad. Itā€™s a lot less of a joke when Ivanā€™s actually around though, and the guild definitely notices. Makarov even starts to officially call them that in some reports.Ā
-No one remembers who suggested the nameĀ ā€œraijinshuu,ā€ but they all privately agree itā€™s dumb. Especially sinceĀ  it insinuates that Laxus is the team leader. Freedā€™s the captain of their team for a reason.
-Dispite the fact that Bickslow is the tallest of them, both Laxus and Freed are both physically stronger than him. Thatā€™s not to say he isnā€™t strong, but Laxus can carry freakish amounts of weight due to his slayer biology, and Freed does the same due to his demon biology.Ā
-Freed can carry all of them at once. No one knows how.Ā
-Freed puts new runes on Everā€™s glasses every time she gets new frames or a new prescription. He knows she doesnā€™t need it anymore, but sheā€™s always grateful for the option.Ā
-if they share a bed, Freed and Ever cannot sleep next to each other. Their hair tangles together and theyā€™ve only had to make that mistake once.Ā
-Ever and Bickslow are not under any circumstances allowed to cook, Freed can make fancy meals, and Laxus makes homemade stuff that would make your mouth water. He also stress bakes in secret at four am.Ā
-Thatā€™s how they always know heā€™s stressed when he doesnā€™t tell them. Itā€™s kind of hard to miss 6 batches of cookies that spontaneously appeared overnight
-Freed has an unsharpened rapier that feels like getting hit with a slap bracelet at full speed. Naturally, this is the sword he chases Bickslow with when he pisses him off.Ā
-Laxus likes to pretend heā€™s one of the smartest members of the guild, but the raijinshuu knows heā€™s actually kind of a himbo.Ā
-Bickslow is really close friends with Loke, and when he noticed the man was dying slowly, the others comforted him despite not knowing what was going on.
-Bickslow often helps ghosts pass on from the mortal plane.Ā
-Evergreen keeps up with all the latest fashion, but she still considers Freed to be more fashionable. Because of this she always double checks her outfits with him.Ā
-Evergreenā€™s always the first to sass someone when theyā€™re being rude to her team. Itā€™s earned her her reputation as aĀ ā€œbitchā€ but sheā€™s far too proud of it to be offended.
-One Laxus was open about his dragon slayer magic, they pushed him to talk to the other slayers to learn about himself and his magic. Freed and Bickslow pushed the hardest though, since theyā€™re friends with Natsu and knew that he would be all too willing to drag Laxus into his little family of dragon slayers.
-Laxus was much happier oncce he accepted that he was more dragon that human anyways, and the more he learned, the happier he was.Ā
-In case it wasnā€™t clear: mtf Trans!Ever (she/her exclusively), he/they Freed, andĀ  wtf is gender, is it a food?ā€ Laxus and Bickslow (any pronouns).Ā

meet me in the gardens

this is part four!Ā all other parts are available on my masterlist!
Tumblr media
The first time you met with Natasha in your gardens, you felt like you were committing some sort of heinous crime. You constantly checked over your shoulder to make sure that no one was watching you, to make sure that no one was going to see that you were heading to meet someone, and especially that no one knew who you were meeting.Ā
You were quiet as you rounded the area and saw no one waiting for you, your hopes of meeting with Natasha sparking out with more vigor than they had been sparked with, and before you could make yourself turn around, you sighed and then inhaled, trying to keep your nerves at a minimum. She wasnā€™t late. She couldnā€™t be late if she was doing you a favor. Before you could get too far in your thoughts, you heard the soft sound of a footstep coming, a stomp so loud that it almost felt intentional. You turned around and saw Natasha approaching, and for the first time, you saw the woman out of her armor.Ā
Ā Ā It was like you were seeing something illegal, at first. You almost shied away, almost averted your eyes, but then you realized that you justā€¦ couldnā€™t. She was too pretty. She wasnā€™t delicate kind of pretty, and nor did she try to be or not to be, but she was just gorgeous. The moonlight, once again, was her ally as it worked to make her features pop, and illuminate her already bright eyes. Her lips were curved upwards in a hesitant smile, almost as if she didnā€™t expect for you to be there, let alone before her. And then it dropped, like she expected you to lose nerve and leave her there. The small sliver of vulnerability in her eyes made you take a small step forward and offer her your own awkward smile.Ā
Ā So, you spoke. ā€œThank you,ā€ was all you were able to get out, but for the moment, that was enough. You expected her to playfully milk it, to ask you, ā€œfor what?ā€, and have you play some humbling game that was both passive and aggressive and teasing. But all she did was smile softly, as softly as the light was hitting the dew on the grass, and tell you that you didnā€™t have to thank her.Ā
Ā Ā ā€œHave you tried refuting it?ā€ She asked, her voice a little less soft in the night.Ā
ā€œI told you, itā€™s useless.ā€ You stood up straighter and walked past her slowly, implying that you wanted to walk with her through your garden. ā€œThe High Priestā€™s word is practically law.ā€Ā
ā€œThe King is fond of you,ā€ Natasha said, and you gave her a look. ā€œIf you ask him to challenge it, he will.ā€Ā
ā€œHe may, but I doubt he would think differently than any of the others. They think I should be married. They donā€™t think that a woman should be in charge of all of the things that I am in charge of.ā€ You kicked a rock. ā€œThey think weā€™re useless.ā€Ā
ā€œI know.ā€Ā
ā€œThatā€™s why I looked at you like that, you know,ā€ you blurted, and she narrowed her eyes at you as she tried to understand what you were talking about. ā€œWhen we first met, do you remember how I stared at you?ā€Ā
ā€œI thought you were going to turn me away.ā€Ā
ā€œNo, not at all. And I apologize for my rudeness,ā€ you added, and she gave you that curt knightā€™s nod, the nod that told the receiver of it that everything was fine. That whatever happened could be considered buried. ā€œBut I looked at you like that becauseā€¦ Iā€™ve never seen a woman be a knight before. Iā€™ve never seen a woman with rough hands, nor have I ever seen her natural desire of battle be fulfilled. Iā€™ve seen common women get dirty and scoop fertilizer and gain muscles, but never for themselves. Always for the good of the family, the good of the farm. I had muscles on the farm when I was young because I had to, not by choice. But youā€¦ you look the way you do and behave the way you do by choice. You chose to be a knight, to be a protector, and to have calloused hands. Unfortunately, I never grew up having choices, but after my husband died, for a while I finally did. But now theyā€™ve left me again, and itā€™s even worse now that Iā€™ve become a lovesick romantic for the idea of free will.ā€Ā
You were more than embarrassed by your speech. You had hardly taken breaths throughout it, but miraculously, your words flowed together and you didnā€™t sound half as nervous as you felt on the inside after finally revealing a pathetic part of yourself. You waited less than patiently for her response as seconds ticked by with just the sounds of feet hitting and leaving the dirt, and the occasional drag of one foot against the ground.Ā
ā€œSo, youā€™re jealous?ā€Ā
You almost laughed. ā€œOf course thatā€™s what you got from that.ā€Ā
ā€œAnd you were a commoner?ā€Ā
Ā You frowned. You were sure that she had heard it from someone else if not by you. And if not by the sword of someone elseā€™s mouth, you assumed that she could spot another commoner from miles away, beneath all the layers of skirt and manners that you forced yourself to keep. ā€œOf course I was, you canā€™t tell?ā€Ā
ā€œSometimes you use language that isnā€™t veryā€¦ noble, but I wouldnā€™t have guessed that you were a commoner before.ā€ You hummed and nodded to yourself. Your etiquette teachers always told you that your language and the accent that youĀ  so desperately tried to hide would be your downfall. That, and the way you used to stare at hot food in the beginning like you had never seen a slab of meat in your life. ā€œYou seem like youā€™ve adapted nicely.ā€Ā
ā€œI had no choice but to,ā€ you said softly. ā€œI was isolated. If I failed as a wife, there was no one that was going to be able to dig me out of the grave.ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œHow did you meet Lord Mirellis?ā€ You made a displeased sound, one that caught her attention. ā€œYou donā€™t have to answer.ā€Ā
ā€œYou owe me a backstory,ā€ was all you said before clearing your throat and continuing to walk, staring at the flowers that you tended to while you spoke. ā€œHe saw me while I was working on the farm. I was feeding the pigs, Iā€™ll never forget. He didn't really say much the first time he saw me, just watched and loomed over me like a shadow. I didnā€™t think much of it at the time besides to give him a curtsy because he was a high lord and I was close to nothing, and then I kept doing my work. I was young, I smelled like mud, and I was feeding pigs from my hand. I never thought twice about the way he looked at me, with his narrowed eyes. I assumed he was looking at me in disgust, like most nobles do to commoners. I didnā€™t think twice.ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œI went back into my house, a little brick thing, and there he was. I remember curtsying a second time, and my hands shook because the air between him and my father was so thick. I remember feeling something in my bones, feeling that things were about to go terribly wrong. So there I was, standing on the hay doormat with mud up to my knees and straw in my hair, smelling like pigs. And then he asked my father- no- told my father that he wanted to take me to his home and wed me, and that he would have it no other way. My heart stopped there. He told him no, and for a moment, I believed that he would keep refusing, until the lord started giving offers.Ā  My heart stopped again, and it died when my father gave me one long look, and then looked at the man in front of him, who was much more powerful, much stronger physically, and able to ruin our family with one stroke of a pen. And then, without even talking to my mother, he told him yes.ā€Ā
ā€œOhā€¦ā€ Natasha said, and you nodded your head and sighed, almost like you were recounting anotherā€™s boring tale and not your own.Ā
ā€œIt felt like before I could even blink, he took me home, here, and married me. It was quick and expensive and I remember wearing a beautiful dress on that day, probably the prettiest dress I had ever seen at that point. It was everything I wanted as a child, because luxury was my first choice, even though it had gone unanswered and unfulfilled. And then I learned that luxury and the prettiest dresses that came with it didnā€™t mean anything if I didnā€™t have the choice to go with it. It was hard for me to learn, but I learned. But I didnā€™t learn to settle with my husband. I warmed his bed because I had to, I held his hand in front of others because I had to, I mingled with his family because I had to and because he kept me from mine. But I was never his, like it said in the vows. And he was never mine.ā€Ā
ā€œDid you want that?ā€ When there were a few beats of seemingly impenetrable silence, Natasha spoke again. ā€œDid you want a relationship like that?ā€Ā
You scoffed, but it wasn't mocking, It was a sad sound, a sound that you wished you could have taken back the second it left you. ā€œNot with him,ā€ you scoffed again. ā€œWith someone else. As a girl, I always wanted to be married to someone who loved me, and someone I loved just as much. It was my dream, maybe even more than luxury was. I wanted love. Not true love, because everyone knows that doesnā€™t exist, but I wanted to fall asleep and wake with someone I could actually stand, someone that made me smile. He singlehandedly killed that dream. I donā€™t think it can ever be revived, but I also didnā€™t think that it could die a second time in the form of Brock Rumlow.ā€
ā€œSo you donā€™t like not having a choice, and a part of you is still holding onto the idea that you could find love?ā€Ā
ā€œI suppose that I said all that to say what youā€™ve said in a few words.ā€ You admitted softly, looking at your hands that used to have calluses. ā€œIā€™m sorry.ā€Ā
ā€œDonā€™t apologize,ā€ Natasha insisted, shaking her head slowly. ā€œI asked for you to tell me. I was honored to get the whole story.ā€Ā
You scoffed again, covering your arms with your hands as a gentle breeze blew. ā€œYouā€™reā€¦ youā€™re gentle with me.ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œAm I?ā€Ā
She was. It was something that you thought about, and also tried not to think about. You often caught yourself watching her wield her sword and exercise and walk into the woods only to return hours later, and claim that she was on some soul searching hunt. The look in her eyes was always hungry, always challenging, always looking for something deeper. But there, in the night with you, she looked just as gentle and delicate as the flowers you were both surrounded by.Ā
ā€œYouā€™re so fierce during the day, I see it. And I can see it brewing under your eyes, and I can hear it under your words. Youā€™re not typically like this, are you?ā€Ā
Ā She waited a minute before she responded. ā€œWhy do you ask?ā€Ā
Ā ā€œBecause youā€™re not like this usually. Itā€™s in your nature to be ā€¦ harsh. This isnā€™t you.ā€Ā
ā€œIt is,ā€ she corrected. ā€œBut itā€™s not the way that most people deserve to see me.ā€Ā
Your heart constricted. ā€œAnd I deserve to see you this way?ā€Ā
ā€œI think you deserve a lot of things.ā€ She answered vaguely, and you stopped your walking to take a look at her and her face of indifference. ā€œI think you deserve more kindness than you receive. I think you never got it to begin with.ā€Ā
ā€œAnd youā€™re trying to make up for lost time?ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™m trying to let you know that the world isnā€™t out to crush your spirit,ā€ she said, sounding slightly exasperated. ā€œYouā€™re so burnt out that you hardly even know it, you know? Youā€™re so tired with the world and the people in it and the wicked ways of both that you donā€™t even realize that you only have two more inches of rope. You donā€™t realize that youā€™re burning both ends of your candle, and itā€™s horribly tragic. You could be so much happier, if you would just let yourself.ā€Ā
Ā Your mouth could have been shown shut at that moment. Your eyes were bugging out of your head, and you doubted that they were dry. Her words were nearing desperate, tone past begging. Did she truly care that much? It was so odd. Even odder, was she right?Ā
Ā Ā ā€œBoth ends of a candle, huh?ā€ You asked, the visual coming to rest in your mind and you nodded, trying your best to keep it together. ā€œAnd if I was? What would you have me do?ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œI would have you go and sit alone by yourself, and find what truly makes you happy. The twins would be glad to help you. You donā€™t have to burn during the daytime when youā€™ve got a perfectly good sun working. Two of them.ā€ You let out a small chuckle.Ā
Ā Ā She was right. As brutish as she seemed, Natasha was proving herself to be correct over and over again. But your head was starting to pound, and you were close to tears again. You couldnā€™t let yourself cry in front of her.Ā
Not yet.Ā
ā€œI think Iā€™ll retire,ā€ you said softly, voice flowing as gently as the breeze as you watched her nod her head. ā€œIs thereā€¦ is there anything you want to talk about?ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™ll save my backstory for the next time.ā€Ā
ā€œNext time,ā€ you repeated, somehow, the words sounded foreign on your tongue. ā€œOkay. Iā€™ll be counting on it by the day,ā€ you said, your voice a little too heavy to be a lighthearted tease, but she indulged you anyway.Ā
ā€œIā€™m sure youā€™ll hardly even make it to four.ā€Ā
Ā§Ā§
Natasha was right, you hadnā€™t made it to four. Next time came in the form of two nights later, after you had cried your eyes out in your room for two days straight all by yourself, not even allowing Wanda in to come and dress you. Your eyes were puffy and your palms had little crescents indented in them from your nails digging in out of nerves and to distract you from the ache in your chest. The moon had barely finished rising in the sky when you trudged out of your room, gave four knocks on Natashaā€™s door and hoped that she would take the hint, and then took off towards the gardens.Ā
Ā While you waited, you couldnā€™t help but to watch the flowers sway in the breeze. The weather was constantly warm yet breezy in your region of the kingdom, and it had always been one of your favorite parts of living in Riverstone. The moonlight changed their colors, made them look somewhat eerie in the night as you waited by yourself for a knight that may or may not show.
Ā ā€œI assumed this was what four knocks were for,ā€ Natashaā€™s voice mused from behind you, and you didnā€™t even jump. ā€œI assume you donā€™t just want to-ā€
ā€œCan you tell me about yourself?ā€ You interrupted, glancing at her and giving her a dejected look that you didnā€™t even realize you were wearing. ā€œPlease?ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œUm, yeah,ā€ Natasha muttered, and then she cleared her throat. Her blue eyes connected to yours while she started to tell her story. ā€œI grew up in the slums, you know that. Near the castle, in the capitol.ā€ You had assumed that much. ā€œI grew up watching knights, and I realized that was what I wanted to be when I was young. And unfortunately for me, I never stop going after the things that I want.ā€Ā
ā€œThatā€™s a gift,ā€ you said, and she shook her head.Ā
ā€œIt depends on the things that I want. More times than not, itā€™s a curse.ā€ Her eyes trailed over to a rose that was working on blooming, and then back to you. ā€œTwo other kids I grew up with felt the same way, Steve and James, but he always went by ā€œBuckyā€. Theyā€™re older than me, but it felt like I was always looking out for them. And I wouldnā€™t have had it any other way. Theyā€™re knights now, they passed their quests.ā€
Ā ā€œThatā€™s wonderful,ā€ you said, and she nodded her head.Ā
ā€œThey live together now, out in the country about a hundred leagues west of here.ā€Ā
Your eyes nearly bugged out of your head. ā€œThey- they live together?ā€Ā
Just like that, Natashaā€™s almost carefree recollection of ehr memories was sliced through with an iron tone and a steely glare as she watched your expression, protecting her lifelong friends that werenā€™t even there to hear anything you could say. ā€œSomething wrong with that?ā€Ā
Ā ā€œThey- they could be killed for that,ā€ you whispered, eyes fixated on her despite how mean she looked in the moment.Ā
ā€œThatā€™s why they live in the country,ā€ she muttered, turning her head away from you, and you could have sworn that she clenched her jaw in what looked like disappointment. ā€œI didnā€™t think that you were the type to judge that.ā€Ā
Ā You werenā€™t. You were actually judged, especially after some people in the beginning of your stay at Riverstone started to believe that you were having an affair with Wanda. You werenā€™t, and Wanda was simply your best friend, but that didnā€™t stop you from realizing how harsh the world was. Sexuality was never your concern, seeing as you never had choices to act on whichever way your heart swayed anyway.Ā
Ā But you couldn't deny that you were getting nervous for the way your fickle little heart acted around Natasha.Ā
Ā Ā ā€œIā€™m not, I promise,ā€ you said, and she gave you a long look. ā€œI justā€¦ I just know that people have been hurt because ofā€¦ the way that they love. Itā€™s not right, but it happens.ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œAnd you?ā€ Natasha asked, and you furrowed your brows. ā€œWho do you love?ā€ You knew that she wasnā€™t talking about a specific person. She was talking about sexuality.Ā
Men. I love men. That was what you should have said, something along those lines and something concrete. It should have been something that would have convinced her and yourself that you were in the clear, that you loved the way society wanted you to. But instead, like Natasha always managed to, you opened your mouth and told the truth. ā€œI don't know.ā€Ā
You looked away before you could see the pure shock flood her face, and then the mask of understanding that collapsed it.Ā
ā€œIt doesnā€™t matter who you love,ā€ she said quietly, almost as if anything louder than a whisper would frighten you back into being reserved. ā€œOnly how you do it.ā€
ā€œIā€™m not sure that priests feel the same way,ā€ you muttered, and she snorted a bit. The sound coming from a woman both shocked you and made you grin.Ā
Ā Ā ā€œThose same priests abuse children. Itā€™s safe to say that I have no cares for anything they have to say about me and my lifestyle.ā€ You sucked in a breath at that and looked towards her, eyes wide as you waited for her to say something else so terribly true but all you looked over to find was a knowing smile on her face as she looked right back at you, painstakingly gorgeous. Your breathing stopped for a moment.Ā
ā€œAnd you?ā€ You dared to ask, but your boldness was erased by the way that your voice trembled. She gave you a look that attempted to convince you that she knew nothing of what you were talking about, but the glint in her eyes gave her away. ā€œYourā€¦ preference.ā€
ā€œI hope my lack of answer keeps you up all night,ā€ she said, and she turned her back to you abruptly, starting to walk away. You sputtered until you could find words.Ā
ā€œWait, what?ā€ You reached out to grab her, warm hand wrapping around the cold skin of her arm, and she turned her head to look at you, face so close that you got nervous. Your eyes drifted downwards, and then back just as quickly. Your heart raced in your chest when you thought about her leaving you behind by yourself in the garden, and then it ached again when you really understood what your panic was about. You didnā€™t want to be without her, being alone didnā€™t bother you any other time. ā€œWhat made you want to be a knight?ā€ You asked out of nowhere, and you saw her face scrunch up. ā€œIf itā€™s not too much to ask to know.ā€Ā
Ā Ā ā€œIā€¦ itā€™s not much. I didnā€™t see anything heroic or watch anyone be saved. There was no knight that saved me either, no knight that I looked up to. In fact, I was the one out of the three of us who wanted to be a knight first,ā€ she said, and you leaned forward, almost like it would make her point come faster. ā€œI read a storyā€¦ you know the one about Sir Yuriel and Lady Selene?ā€Ā
Ā Ā Ā You blinked. Of course you did. Everyone knew that story. It was a common one that was read to children right before bed, about a time where the crime for falling in love with someone who wasnā€™t your intended was punishable by death. ā€œThe one where they run away from the people trying to kill him together?ā€Ā
ā€œYes,ā€ Natasha said, and you furrowed your brows. It was hardly a positive story. It was a story drilled into young minds about the dangers of not doing what they were told to do, and what could happen if they chose to carve their own paths.Ā
ā€œThe knight dies at the end,ā€ you pointed out.Ā
ā€œHe dies protecting her,ā€ she corrected, but you just shook your head at her.Ā
ā€œRegardless, he died. Why would you want to die?ā€Ā
ā€œI donā€™t want to die,ā€ she said, and you waited for the other part of her answer. ā€œI want to do what he did, but better. As bad as I might still seem to you, Iā€™m still a girl. And I want to love someone so much that I would give everything for them, and I want them to love me back enough for them to give up all the riches that Selene did. Just like you.ā€Ā
You ignored the pang in your chest at her accuracy, and the knowing look in her deep eyes. ā€œOh, so youā€™re a liberator? You save women from unfortunate circumstances?ā€Ā
ā€œMore like I just hate seeing things that are blatantly wrong, and I like to fix them.ā€Ā
ā€œThen youā€™re in the wrong profession. You should have tried for a kingā€™s associate.ā€Ā
ā€œThe people who are the true menaces listen to swords, not dried ink.ā€ She patted her hip, right where the hilt of her sword would have been if she was in her armor. ā€œIā€™m right where I need to be.ā€Ā
ā€œIn the middle of the garden of a widower, who cries herself to sleep every night after learning that sheā€™s to be wed again?ā€ You asked, and somehow, despite the severity of your words, there was a teasing lilt to your tone.Ā
Ā ā€œI think weā€™re both right where we need to be.ā€Ā
ā€œOh, wouldnā€™t that be something? If the stars lined up kindly for a change.ā€ You couldnā€™t hold back your scoff. ā€œIā€™d get on my knees and pray for the first time in years.ā€Ā
Natasha stared at you for a long moment, her eyes calculating something that was completely lost to you as you crossed your arms and looked right back at her, a quiet and tension free challenge hanging in the air between you.Ā ā€œHave you ever even watched the stars to see if they aligned?ā€
ā€œI donā€™t have the time or the spirit for that,ā€ you said, a small laugh edging out the hardness in your voice.
Ā ā€œInteresting.ā€Ā
Ā§Ā§
You had a day full of Pietro, an evening just sitting and talking mindlessly with Wanda, and then you got a sharp round of knocks on your door, and though you had never gotten them before, you knew exactly what they meant.Ā
Natasha was waiting for you, and the sight of her had you nearly choking. She was in a flowy white gown, the material so thin that it could have been a night gown. Her hair that was typically up during the day was down, and the Riverstone breeze was as evident as ever as she stared back at you, either waiting for an action or a few words to come from you. However, the second you opened your mouth, she shook her head.Ā
ā€œNot a word. Weā€™re stargazing tonight.ā€Ā
The part of you that was beaten into being mature was immediately turned off by the idea. Stargazing was something that you hadnā€™t done since childhood, and being a child never got you anywhere you needed to be. But the other part of you, the one that had been buried in dust just like your hands from that time had been covered in mud, wanted to do it. It both excited you and terrified you, because not even Wanda could make that part of you surface, not like how it was then.Ā
Ā Ā You knew, without a doubt, that it had everything to do with Natasha Romanoff.Ā
You pretended to debate, but on the inside, you were already giving the stars love-eyes. ā€œLetā€™s do it, then.ā€
It lasted for hours. Mostly, the two of you were silent, but that hardly meant that the two of you werenā€™t bonding. Every so often, she would turn her head to look over at you, and you would ignore the electrifying feeling of her blue eyes on the side of the face, vision fluttering all around your face. And then, you would look at her the same way, studying her like your former etiquette teachers would stare at your sewing and your posture. You found that with her being so close, you couldnā€™t deprive your eyes of watching her.
But when you werenā€™t looking at her for your own benefit or looking at her watching you, you were watching the stars. You laid under the arch of the gardens with her, a few petals blocking the way of a few distant stars. It feltā€¦ right. It felt natural, with the silence and all, and above anything, it just felt peaceful. You forgot everything that was troubling you within minutes of just lying there next to her. Feeling the warmth of her skin and the security of her being near was worth more than a thousand words, and you found that in that moment, sitting in silence with her and looking at the stars that had screwed you over so terribly was one of the best decisions that you had ever made.Ā

on bren and feeblemind.
(cw: lots of caleb backstory. self-explanatory, i think?)
.
.
this isnā€™t something iā€™ve talked about on my blog yet, but since the campaign has begun drawing to a close, i want to make sure i say my piece on the popular theory that bren/caleb was institutionalized because trent ikithon feebleminded him to disable him.
my piece being that itā€™s exceptionally unlikely he didā€”at least as a premeditated plan. this kind of theory also falls prey to the exact beliefs ikithon has tried to exploit in caleb.
for our mutual reference, iā€™ll quote the spell description of feeblemind.
FEEBLEMIND (PHB) 8th level enchantment
Casting time: 1 action Range: 150 feet Components: VSM (a handful of clay, crystal, glass, or mineral spheres) Duration: Instantaneous
You blast the mind of a creature that you can see within range, attempting to shatter its intellect and personality. The target takes 4d6 psychic damage and must make an Intelligence saving throw.
On a failed save, the creatureā€™s Intelligence and Charisma scores become 1. The creature canā€™t cast spells, activate magic items, understand language, or communicate in any intelligible way. The creature can, however, identify its friends, follow them, and even protect them.
At the end of every 30 days, the creature can repeat its saving throw against this spell. If it succeeds on its saving throw, the spell ends. The spell can also be ended by Greater Restoration, Heal, or Wish.
considering the characteristics described and implied by actors other than ikithonā€”caleb and astrid prominentlyā€”who are not motivated to deceive on ikithonā€™s behalf, feeblemind is not consistent with calebā€™s mental break.
fact the first: when bren broke, he became violent and spellcasted.
when astrid describes the circumstances in which he was taken to the vergessen sanatorium (e89, 1:49:30), she refers to his lashing out as ā€œcreat[ing] a lot of sparks everywhere elseā€ and rubs at burn scars across her neck. she says that they had to subdue him because he was too dangerous. all of these statements add up to a bren who was viciously spellcasting at his friends and mentor when he broke down.
this wouldnā€™t have been possible if heā€™d been feebleminded. feeblemind explicitly prevents the affected creature from casting spells or activating magic items. in that scenario, the only thing bren wouldā€™ve been capable of is throwing hands. from him? not very dangerous at all.
how do we know astrid wasnā€™t lying or intentionally deceptive? because she (and eadwulf) still cares so much for caleb that she risked her life multiple times to aid him. no one who would give caleb a map to a secret volstrucker vault with her own handwriting on it (e127, 29:29; and 30:57)ā€”or intentionally fail to counterspell him when ikithon couldā€™ve seen her do soā€”would lie to caleb about ikithon attempting to permanently feeblemind him if she knew.
to preempt the idea that astrid had set the m9 up: itā€™s very obvious she didnā€™t, since trent ikithon had clearly had no forewarning of a break-in. he wouldā€™ve at least been waiting in the vault, already prepared to subdue them quickly, if heā€™d known.
so itā€™s fair to determine that astrid would either be honest to the extent of her knowledge to caleb or make it clear that she couldnā€™t answer him. since she didnā€™t imply the latter, we can assume she was being honest. and because of astridā€™s competence, itā€™s highly probable she wouldā€™ve noticed if his behavior was symptomatic of feeblemind over the years.
fact the second: brenā€™s mental condition repeatedly improved and regressed while he was institutionalized.
astrid states this in the same conversation about their subduing him after his breakdown (e89, 1:50:50). considering this with the context of their romantic relationship prior to his breakdown, her genuine care for him, and her rise to power that included accompanying ikithon frequently to the sanatorium (e127, 31:07)ā€”astrid wouldā€™ve had the motivation and the opportunities to visit bren in person. she couldā€™ve also kept well-abreast of his condition.
actual times of improvement and decline in the mental state that astrid first observed during his breakdown wouldnā€™t be consistent with feeblemind. although it reduces the victimā€™s intelligence score to 1, they still retain thought and their sense of identity without problems.
this is a maintenance of consistency and (relative) reason. feeblemind does not actually damage a personā€™s basic perception of reality. but the health of brenā€™s behavior throughout the years was instead very unstable.
fact the third: caleb doesnā€™t remember anything from the burning of his home up to his healing by the unknown cleric.
in the conversation with astrid in e89, he asks her what happened when he broke and explicitly says,Ā ā€œthe last thing i remember is my homeā€ (1:46:58). when he first tells beau and nott about his past, he explains that he doesnā€™t remember much of what happened to him there (e18, 2:51:54).
beyond the reduction to their intelligence, feeblemind doesnā€™t affect the victimā€™s ability to form memories. calebā€™s keen mind feat and established narrative element of his eidetic memory wouldā€™ve still been present as well. therefore, feeblemind alone canā€™t explain such a significant, near-empty gap in his memory. he would still remember something.
even the possibility of trent ikithon altering them directly is precluded by the fact that the clericā€™s healing removed the alterations to calebā€™s memory. if all those years had been magically blocked away, theyā€™d have returned when he was healed of everything else.
fact the fourth: sometimes, people really do just break.
nothing about calebā€™s backstory is inconsistent with just... being a person living their life, even a terrible one. he was a young man that believed so zealously in his country and his purpose, abused by a powerful older man, that he did many horrible things and believed they were right. until finally he did something that he couldnā€™t process and broke down.
thereā€™s two reoccurring, underlying assumptions iā€™ve noticed behind why this theory seems to be so compelling and popular:
caleb just seems so remorseful and traumatized by his double patricide. thereā€™s no way he wouldā€™ve willingly murdered his parents. ikithon must have known and decided to preempt his inevitable betrayal.
everything we know about bren, especially from the horseā€™s own mouth, suggests that he had been willing (at least up until his mental break) to murder his parents. he was literally an extreme nationalistā€”a fascist, if you will. he was lawful evil (twitter source). he gratefully executed many ā€œcriminalsā€ put in front of him, more than likely by burning them to death based on his ptsd. victims whom we now understand may not have been guilty of anything at all.
he was glad to do what he thought was best for the dwendalian empire, and he truly thought being volstrucker was the correct path. trent ikithon, his abuser, treated him as his favorite (e110, 3:30:58). because he believed.
that fervent faith, in fact, is the key to something like his breakdown in the first place. hearing the dying screams of his parents, bren was forced to confront a violent dissonance between his radical beliefs that condemned traitors (as he believed until the clericā€™s healing) and the intuitive horror of murdering his parents that he couldnā€™t reconcile. this fathomless sense of betrayal is why caleb so deeply despised ikithon and himself.
a young evocation wizard who didnā€™t want his parents dead wouldā€™ve run into that burning house, feebleminded or not. someone magically compelled to set that fire wouldā€™ve understood what happened as soon as the charm left him and would definitely remember every detail once the cleric healed him.
caleb is remorseful and traumatized because he willingly murdered his parents. as well as many others.
it canā€™t be that simple. caleb was institutionalized for eleven years just because his abuser pushed him too far? there must be a more nefarious reason. ikithon even said he basically stored him for later.
putting aside the fact that bren having a breakdown in the way he did makes complete sense for his situation, ikithonā€™s ā€œclaimā€ that he orchestrated all of calebā€™s subsequent years is not only something he never actually says (e110, 3:16:34)ā€”it is a claim thatā€™s patently absurd.
iā€™ve written meta that discusses this in the past (link here). essentially though, the number of moving pieces and assumptions that would be needed for such a series of events is ridiculously improbable. even assuming that ikithon feebleminded himā€”so that calebā€™s mind would be intact when he ā€˜woke upā€™ā€”even assuming that ikithon somehow procured the service of a cleric of the archeartā€”a banned deity in the empire that would oppose ikithon...
why in the world would he ever reasonably believe that caleb widogast, the man he viciously betrayed and lied to and abused, would do anything to benefit ikithon?
trent ikithon is a mortal man. he has power, yes; enchantment magic, authority, and a history of abuse and manipulation over calebā€™s head, yes. but ikithon is a mortal man. not a puppeteer in the sky piloting peopleā€™s bodies.
he certainly wouldnā€™t have led caleb to a whole new family that would change everything about his life for the better. a family that would love him, trulyā€”a family that would help him heal, bear the weight of his guilt, and find a real future waiting for him again instead of a self-destructive end. a family that would fight tooth and nail for calebā€™s sake against ikithon.
abusers lie. their biggest lie, the one they always circle back to in the end, is that their victim is unique: that there is something which makes them deserving of abuse, and that their abuser is both right and inescapable.
ikithon is read as honest because he chooses his words carefully and has the self-confidence to believe it. everything heā€™s claimed about caleb and his past have either been implications that he encouraged others to reach for him or platitudes empty of everything except gaslighting intent.
caleb has escaped. and everything ikithon wants is to convince caleb and his friends that he continues to control calebā€™s life, that caleb is special, so he can regain some influence over a man whoā€™s come to command so much power.
the idea that caleb mustā€™ve been feeblemindedā€”that he couldnā€™t have just had a mental breakdown like so many other prospective volstrucker before miraculously, then strenuously, recovering to create a hopeful future for himselfā€”falls into the trap of validating ikithonā€™s lies.
trent ikithon didnā€™t see and believe in calebā€™s ā€˜full potentialā€™ before anyone else did. he didnā€™t foresee a single ounce of the manā€™s struggle to put himself back together after what he suffered. caleb was not institutionalized to serve as a toy to one day pull back out of the closet. there was no feeblemind or other secretive plan that could only serve to obfuscate the brutal truth:
ikithon abused a boy until he shattered, and tried to hide the evidence. a crime that heā€™s committed against countless other children. plain and simple.
so thatā€™s my piece.
caleb widogastā€”bren ermendrudā€”was not the victim of a premeditated feeblemind from ikithon, based on the mechanics of the spell. even more importantly, the narrative of his and ikithonā€™s stories would suffer if he was.
now,
A LOGICAL POSSIBILITY I WONā€™T DENY.
what if ikithon feebleminded him as a method to subdue him after the breakdown?
this is more or less an alternate theory thatā€™s irrelevant to the points i actually wanted to make. but i want to talk about it anyway because itā€™s kind of fun.
fact the bonus: bren spent eleven years in the sanatorium.
eleven years is a long time. he wouldā€™ve been able to save every 30 days after the initial failed save. the exandrian calendar has about eleven 30-day periods every year. assuming a feeblemind spell cast on him just prior to his institutionalization, thatā€™s somewhere around 121 possible save attempts, give or take a few.
whatā€™s the likelihood of him actually saving? to go through the mechanics:
normally, feeblemind reduces a personā€™s intelligence score to 1, modifier -5. caleb, as a variant human, possessed the feat keen mind from the beginning both mechanically and story-wise. this would make his intelligence score 2, modifier -4, even after feeblemind.
as a level 1-2 wizard, he wouldā€™ve had proficiency in intelligence saves. this would be +2 to his save.
in total, the modifier to brenā€™s intelligence saves would be -2.
in order to cast feeblemind, trent ikithon would have to have been a minimum level 15 wizard. this leaves two possible proficiency bonuses to determine his spell save dc: +5 or +6.
itā€™s probably safe to assume that his intelligence score is at least 18ā€“20, likely 20. this would be a modifier of +4 or +5. (his intelligence could be 22+ if matt wanted to be a real dick, but letā€™s assume otherwise.)
spell save dc = 8 + spellcasting score mod (for wizards, this is intelligence) + proficiency bonus.
this means trent ikithonā€™s possible spell save dc is somewhere from 17ā€“19.
therefore:
at minimumā€”17 being ikithon as a level 15ā€“16 wizard with an intelligence score of 18ā€“19 at the time of castingā€”bren would have to roll a 19 or nat 20 to make the save with his -2 save modifier.
at a dc of 18ā€”ikithon either being level 17ā€“20 or having an intelligence score of 20, but not bothā€”bren would have to roll a nat 20.
at a dc of 19(+), it would be impossible for bren to save without additional bonuses such as bless.
i donā€™t have the brainpower to calculate some real statistical probabilities, but depending on your opinion of trent ikithonā€™s probable capabilities at the time of brenā€™s mental break, he may have been able to save against feeblemind sometime during the eleven years he spent at the sanatorium.
naturally, this has the earlier-mentioned conundrum of remembering that return of clarity once he was healed by the cleric, should ikithon have been retrieved to recast the feeblemind and altered his memories. nevertheless, it may or may not be a fun thought to play around with.

Note
For the ā€œeveryone who died is able to wake upā€ sdra2 au, could you do headcanons of the characters who died reuniting with their s/o who made it to the end? If all the dead characters is too much, you can choose who to do, but if you decide to do Shinji, since he has teenage children, maybe you could include them being there too?
I can do all of them! I think the Void members are the same age outside the simulation so Iā€™ll just leave them at that.
Obvious major spoilers!Ā This took forever to write whew
.........
Yuri
Realizing that you saw each other as high schoolers was quite strange. But now you remembered why Yuri became so attached to you the moment you met on the island.
Everyone who woke up wasĀ shook upon seeing how tall and muscular he actually was. But you were just happy to see your boyfriend alive and well.
You tell him everything thatā€™s happened, and heā€™s understandably bitter about Hajime killing him (you had to distract him with a kiss so he didnā€™t actually punch him).
In time he decides to forgive the boxer...but only because you asked him to.
He feels guilty about letting Monocrow be used for the killing game. So to ensure his work didnā€™t hurt anyone else, he destroyed all the data and blueprints associated with the bird.
The simulation reminded you of how short he was back then--and youā€™d tease him about it often (much to his embarrassment).
Hajime
Wakes up disoriented and confused, until he realizes heā€™s alive and back in the real world. Though heā€™s got a bit of a headache.
Then he sees you and smiles. ā€œWere you waiting long?ā€
ā€œAlmost too long, you dumbass.ā€ You just hug him tightly, grateful that his brain wasnā€™t fried to mush like you feared.
He has genuine regrets about siding with Mikado and offers to let you punch him if you wanted to. But you only give him a kiss and reassure him thatā€™s all in the past.
Despite everything, he manages to joke about being turned into a doll, claiming it could be good merchandise to sell in the future. Though for now you both just wanna go home and recuperate from what happened.
Yep, heā€™s still got his healthy habits so heā€™ll be sure to take care of himself (and you, of course, since your mental health is just as important as your physical health).
Kokoro
Has the most nonchalant reaction.Ā
She feels unusually cold, but quickly claims itā€™s just anĀ ā€œafter-effectā€ of the death she experienced in the program.
If anyone else was her s/o, they wouldā€™ve been angry and confused at her neutral reaction. But youā€™ve known her long enough to know sheā€™s like this all the time.Ā
So you just smile and welcome her back, telling her you survived--like her younger self anticipated.
With both versions of Mikado gone, she isnā€™t exactly sure where to go with her research from here. But you convinced her to take a long break from her work.
She thought youā€™d be angry or at least disappointed that she contributed to the simulationā€™s creation, but you arenā€™t.
You didnā€™t have the heart to hate her, even though before that you resented her for using her daughter for human experiments.
Emma
Surprisingly calm...at first. She just acts like she woke up from a nap, relievedĀ ā€œthis bad dreamā€ was finally over.
But then she sees her hands--realizing sheā€™s whole again and not some disgusting mess of flesh trapped in limbo--as you hold them and smile softly at her. ā€œWelcome back to the land of the living, darling.ā€
Everything hits her all at once, and before you knew it, she was hugging you tightly and sobbing into your chest as she apologized for everything she did.Ā
She was scared sheā€™d never see you again, worrying if youā€™d survive to the end (imagine her relief when you did).
You spend a bit of time comforting her, rubbing her back and reassuring her she was finally free of Mikadoā€™s influence.
Youā€™re close to tears yourself--seeing her slaughtered by horror movie monsters was a grim execution you wouldnā€™t forget easily.Ā
And after coming home thatā€™s one movie genre you both avoid for a while.
Setsuka
She wakes up feeling disappointed and some back/joint pain that she didnā€™t see through her mission till the end, but sheā€™s happy to be back with you.
You practically throw yourself into her arms, relieved she was whole again and not just limbs scattered across a haunted house attraction.
If you decide to tell her about the circumstances regarding her death, she might be quite unnerved, at first, though she doesnā€™t resent Hibiki once you mention how she was basically a puppet during that time.
Her quick forgiveness wouldā€™ve been surprising, but you only expected that from her and just smile, giving her a kiss.
ā€œYouā€™re taking a few days off of work. I donā€™t care what Tsurugi says--you need it.ā€
ā€œAlright, alright..fair enough...by the way, Iā€™m still as cute as I was back then, right?ā€ She chuckles.
Yep, thatā€™s your sweetheart of a former billiards player alright.
Hibiki/Kanade
(I hc that Kanadeā€™s serial killer backstory was all fabricated, and her obsession over Hibiki isnā€™t as extreme irl, but she still has some overprotectiveness).
When the twins wake up at the same time, they...honestly arenā€™t sure what to say to you--or each other for that matter.
Kanade was staring off into space, fully aware of the horrible things she said and did. Meanwhile Hibiki looked ready to yell at her as soon as she spoke. And you were just watching them nervously.
But then youā€™re surprised when the younger sister reaches over to hug you, starting to cry and apologize for everything. She could never see herself doing any of those things in real life...but she doesnā€™t expect any forgiveness right away.
To her shock, you forgave her--knowing that the Kanade in that simulation wasnā€™t your sweet and shy sweetheart. The real one youā€™ve known since forever was right here, feeling truly remorseful for things she never did.
Itā€™s not long before Hibiki burst into tears too and oops now both of them are crying into your arms.Ā
But you didnā€™t care. What mattered was that the nightmare was finally over.
Shinji
Your teenage kids were brought to the location of the pods by the KF (as other living relatives of the kidnapped participants were), and they anxiously waited for you and Shinji to awaken.
The relief and joy you felt upon seeing their smiling, tearful faces was immensurable as they practically tackle-hugged you. But when they ask about their father, you decide theyā€™re mature enough to know what happened--and so you explain that he made a sacrifice to protect everyone, including you.
They promise to wait for him, as they did for you...and man is that wait worth it when he awakens to see his beloved family.
Itā€™s a very, very tearful reunion, but it was especially overwhelming for you, considering you still have the image of your husbandā€™s burnt corpse fresh in your mind.
Shinjiā€™s optimism never wavers, even after everything. He points out that the way you two have interacted in the simulation was similar to how you both met in real life during high school (minus the killings, of course).
You regrettably tell him what became of Yuki, but he just hopes the kidā€™s doing alright, wherever he may be.
Nikei
The moment he wakes up, he takes a few seconds to register three things: heā€™s alive, youā€™re alive, and his right hand is back.Ā
But before you can ask him how heā€™s feeling, a billion and one questions fly out of his mouth.
ā€œIs it all over?? Is Mikado gone?!! What about Utsuro--??"
You do your best to calm him down and catch him up to speed, reassuring him Mikado is gone and wonā€™t hurt him ever again.
Though now that he sees everyone alive and well--including Shinji and Void--he feels tense and awkward, wondering what the future holds now. But you take his right hand to divert his attention back to you.
He gets pretty choked up, realizing that heā€™s finally free and isnā€™t doomed forever and can actually go home with you. You just smile and hug him, repeating those reassurances.
Considering his breakdown in the trial where he got executed, you decide youā€™ll have a long chat about his insecurities when you two get home--with him being the interviewee.
Teruya
Rei and Tsurugi are with you when Teruya finally awakens. Though before he can even properly get out of the pod, you throw your arms around him and he doesnā€™t hesitate to embrace you back.
Heā€™s already in tears himself, relieved when you tell him you survived.
ā€œThatā€™s good..Iā€™m..I-Iā€™m glad you made it out.ā€
ā€œI wouldā€™ve liked to make it out with you, too, idiot.ā€ You huff, remembering how he refused the antidote you tried giving him for the poison.Ā
He told you why he needed to die so you could escape with everyone. And it hurt him a lot to do that, but you forgive him..though only if he promises to never make a stupid sacrifice like that again.
You decide to leave out how you almost got executed by an incorrect vote. For a while you thought you could never avenge your boyfriend, but with Mikado finally gone..you were now satisfied.
Heā€™ll need a few days off of work after what heā€™s been through. You already chewed out Tsurugi for calling Teruya a ā€œdiversionā€, so he begrudgingly allows it.

Analyzing the writing of Eagles
Here's a post I've been wanting to make for a while! I've expressed my thoughts on some of the storylines in previous posts, but I've never done a complete post on the writing of the whole show. I've divided this post into separate parts, focusing on each season and its plot points. Keep reading to see my analysis of the writing in Eagles! šŸ‘‡ Word Count: 18k
If you've stumbled upon this post from the Young Royals or the Beartown tag (tagged them since I've drawn some parallels from those shows), here's a brief summary of what Eagles is, which you can watch with English subtitles here. This post contains Eagles spoilers from 1x01 - 3x10.
Eagles is a Swedish TV show that revolves around a few teenagers living in the Swedish ice hockey town Oskarshamn while experiencing friendship, love, and rivalry on the ice.
To start this off I would like to say that I have no experience with professional screenwriting and if anything, this is just a way for me to procrastinate on actually writing my own projects.
I love experiencing new stories and when I discover one I really like it's just natural for me to branch off with "what ifs" and to start wondering how the story would've turned out if some things were changed. Sometimes it's with a storyline improvement in mind, and other times it's just out of plain curiosity.
You might feel like this post is leaning towards the critical side, and I can definitely understand why since there are a lot of small details that I've picked apart from all seasons. I added a section for each season with things that I thought were really well done so this post wouldn't be too negative.
I actually did enjoy all seasons and I feel like the quality of not just the writing but every single thing has steadily increased each year.
Tumblr media
Season 1: Tropes and clichƩs
Eagles premiered its first season in 2019 and was, despite many negative reviews, a big success among its target audience. Every episode on SVT Play amassed around 700 000ā€“800 000 views and there didn't seem to be any doubt that the show would get renewed.
What the critics had issues with were that "Eagles rarely takes the unexpected path, and feels like a slightly soulless product of studied target group thinking a little too often," (Karolina Fjellborg in Aftonbladet) and "In Eagles, the characters seem to be locked in the role of a "teenager" but the humanity is missing. They've simplified the construction of the character," (Django Lorentzson in MovieZine).
Eagles was unfortunate enough to constantly be compared to SKAM in its infancy, and that's a tough comparison to live up to. SVT sort of shot themselves in the foot as they were the ones who contributed to it. While the show was still in the casting process, SVT wrote an article hyping the show up as a Swedish SKAM (which has since been edited, but led many to falsely believe that it would involve all the familiar SKAM characters with some hockey elements sprinkled in).
So, why exactly did critics think the first three episodes of the show were predictable and soulless? Well, it's pretty simple. They'd seen it all before. The setting, the characters, the storylinesā€”just in different TV shows and movies.
Season 1 for me is nostalgic and very enjoyable despite its clichĆ©d nature. I also felt like I'd seen the show before due to its generic storylines, but there is a reason why tropes are tropes and why clichĆ©s are clichĆ©s. It's because they're tried and true, and actually somewhat good writing tools as long as you expand on them. The keyword here is to expandā€”a story doesn't magically become good simply because you mimic something another writer has done. Tropes are fine to use but you can't just apply them and stop there. Everything in a story needs to be developed in order to be good.
It's safe to say that it's pretty much impossible to write a story without any tropes that have been used before. Striving to avoid clichƩs at all costs in hopes of making your story as original as possible is harder than it sounds, and almost impossible to boot. Here's a great piece of advice for aspiring writers written by a user on Carvezine:
[...] if you look down at your story and are worried itā€™s already been told before ā€“ donā€™t spend another second thinking about it. It has. A million times. The only difference is that it hasnā€™t been told by you. Accept that regurgitation is part of writing, and just do your best not to regurgitate the same way as the guy next to you. Weā€™d all do well to acknowledge there is at least a portion of our stories that are really someone elseā€™s. [...] Beyond that, write with the motivation that if you donā€™t get around to telling your story, eventually somebody else will.
Even the greatest books have storylines with some clichƩs. And that's not really a bad thing, either. Think about it. How many times have you decided to binge a TV show solely because it reminded you of another series? Or picked up a book simply because you love a good enemies to lovers romance, a battle between good and evil fantasy, or whatever it might be?
I found this article from Masterclass that perfectly describes what tropes are and why they're used. It's written from the perspective of novel writing but it is still applicable.
A trope in literary terms is a plot device or character attribute that is used so commonly in the genre that itā€™s seen as commonplace or conventional. For example, a trope in superhero stories is a villain who wants to take over the world. Tropes are popular for a reasonā€”if something has been written about over and over again, thereā€™s a good chance that itā€™s something readers enjoy reading! Tropes can be helpful, but a novel made up only of tropes will quickly start to feel stale and predictable to readers. Thatā€™s why you need to read up on tropesā€”and then innovate. Deliberately taking a favorite trope and turning it on its head is a great way to put your own unique spin on the genre and keep your readers interested.
Eagles, in its first season, didn't really do a lot of expanding upon the tropes they used and it's understandable that they were still trying to find their footing. I can also imagine it's difficult to do so when you only have eight 20 minute episodes in the season.
However... There definitely should've been more work put into these characters to make them their own. It's tricky, yes, but still achievable if you don't abandon them in their cookie-cutter form and try to actually decorate them with something unique and fresh.
So, how did they write their characters?
Felicia's character and backstory
To start off, Felicia is a famous influencer known for starring in a reality show next to her former NHL professional father. There's already a clear disconnect because it's hard to relate to a character with such a public past and large following. But it is 100% possible if you let the viewer know the character has humane qualities just like the person watching the show.
Look at Wilhelm from Netflix's Young Royals, another Swedish TV show. Wilhelm is the prince of Sweden, set to attend a prestigious elite boarding school, and is the heir to the throne. That doesn't exactly sound like a relatable scenario, does it? And yet the writers make it work because when we're introduced to Wilhelm we realize he's just like everybody else. He wants a normal life, he latches on to his older brother for support, he has anxiety, and he struggles between following his heart versus doing what his family is expecting him to do. A lot of these factors are relatable among the audience.
So, let's look at Felicia Kroon. She is in many ways portrayed as the main character of the show. Eagles starts off with her family having moved to Oskarshamn and the following episodes focus on her developing relationship with Ludde as well as her traumatic past. There's almost too much focus on Felicia here, and I'll get back to that.
Comparing Felicia to Wilhelm from Young Royals, they're both well-known teenagers with famous parents. Of course they have different circumstances considering Felicia is Instagram popular and Wilhelm is a blood royal, but in the grand scheme of things they're similar. Felicia is even referred to as a "Kroon princess" because of her last name Kroon bearing a resemblance to the Swedish word kronprinsessa, meaning crown princess.
The students of their respective schools treat their attendance as a big deal when they first arrive and then Wilhelm and Felicia start spending time with the "popular" crowd despite not really fitting in there.
I personally found it easy to relate to Wilhelm but difficult to relate to Felicia. Some people may feel differently, but her character is basically a popular party girl who attracts the attention of one of the school's star players and is "welcomed" by the popular crowd on her first day of school. I put welcome in quotation marks because Klara, the leader of the girl group, isn't exactly the most welcoming person but she does welcome Felicia to the school. My point is, Felicia doesn't have a lot of relatable traits in the first episodes.
Felicia then goes on a date with the guy she's met, Ludde. Okay, so there haven't been that many layers to her character yet. We're at the third episode and so far she's been kind of flat.
Near the end of the third episode, we get some depth to the character and we hear her back story.
Felicia: [...] We donā€™t have a good relationship, my dad and I. And thatā€™s probably why we moved from the beginning, because heā€™s an idiot. Weā€™ve never been close, butā€¦ Elias and he have been since theyā€™ve had hockey. [...] And mom has been really involved, soā€¦ And Iā€¦ Theyā€™ve never really cared about me. Andā€¦ And I havenā€™t really been a problem either. Iā€™ve had good grades, good friends, andā€¦ I donā€™t know why Iā€™m telling you this. I donā€™t talk about it to people. [...] I just felt so fucking lonely and invisible. I was worried all the time, couldnā€™t sleep, panicked because I couldnā€™t sleepā€¦ So I started going out more. It went overboard. It started affecting school, my grades slippedā€¦ I started taking things to be able to concentrate. Everybody does stuff like that. And then I still couldnā€™t sleep, soā€¦ I started mixing with sleeping pills. And thereā€™s always wine and booze at our place. I donā€™t want this to come out, thatā€™s really important. Ludde: Of course, Iā€™d never tell. Felicia: One night, something happened that made meā€¦ Act out of control more than usual. I woke up the next morning in the hospital. So they sent me to rehab. It was really rough for mom and dad that I was suddenly in focus. When I woke up, dad wasnā€™t even there. Ludde: What made you take too much that night? Felicia: Iā€™d forgotten my phone at home, so I ran up and got it while my friends were waiting in an Uber. Then I came into the hall and I heard noises. You know, like, when somebody is doing it. Ludde: Okay. Felicia: And I thought it was really weird because mom wasnā€™t home. So I went into the living roomā€¦ Dad was fucking my momā€™s best friend. On the rug below the couch.
This gives Felicia more layers and does separate her from every other "popular pretty party girl" trope that you see on TV. But this is a huge info dump, and that's a problem. I would've liked to see this happen on-screen instead of only being told what went down. The golden rule of Show don't tell, as people like to say.
Show, donā€™t tell is a writing technique in which story and characters are related through sensory details and actions rather than exposition. It fosters a style of writing thatā€™s more immersive for the reader, allowing them to ā€œbe in the roomā€ with the characters. In his most commonly repeated quote, Chekhov said, ā€œDonā€™t tell me the moon is shining. Show me the glint of light on broken glass."
This back story could've been more impactful that way if, perhaps, the show began with Felicia in a hospital bed with a strong headache and hazy flashbacks of that night where she saw her dad sleeping with another woman. Then we're introduced to her mother and brother sitting next to the hospital bed tired and worried, and Felicia notices her dad isn't present. They tell her Felicia is being sent to rehab and then there's a time-jump before we see the Kroon family having moved to Oskarshamn.
That's just an idea I threw together at the top of my head, but you get my point. It would've been more interesting if we knew from the beginning that Felicia had a traumatic past like this, leading the viewer to want to know more about what actually happened.
We did get a brief flashback at the very beginning of the showā€”we see Felicia partying with her friends and taking some pill before lying unconscious on the ground. There's also a glimpse of Ludde's car accident with Andreas yelling at him to get out of there.
That segment only lasts for around 45 seconds and it's easily forgettable upon your first viewing of the show. It's also hard to even recognize Felicia in the dark nightclub setting with the flashing lights. Some dialogue in that short scene could've made it more memorable, because I found that when I first watched season 1 I remembered Andreas yelling at Ludde despite that being drowned out by the music.
Ludde's backstory was way more well-done, in my opinion. We see him having crashed the car and bleeding from his head. He looks terrified and almost frozen by fear, needing to be pulled out of the car by a panicked Andreas yelling at him to bring Ludde back to the reality of the situation. We see Andreas yelling and pointing, telling Ludde he needs to run now. It's more powerful when we get to see it.
And in episode 8, when we learn the truth of what happened, it's not a long and dragged-out monologue. It fits into what's going on in the story. Felicia and Ludde have known each other for a few months now and are much closer than they were on their first date. They've had disagreements and fights, but at this moment they're in a good place.
And it feels like the right moment for Ludde to come clean about what happened to him.
Ludde: Heyā€¦ Thereā€™s something Iā€™ve been meaning to tell you. Felicia: What? Ludde: Aboutā€¦ My brother. Itā€™s not really as everybody thinks. Felicia: What do you mean? Ludde: That night when he crashedā€¦ It wasnā€™t Andreas who drove the car. We were on our way home from one of his buddies. Weā€™d had some fun drinking. And thenā€¦ Iā€™d just started learning how to drive. So I nagged and nagged at him. Felicia: So you were the one driving? But heā€™s an adult- Ludde: He was drunk as hell. He was going to leave the car, but I thought it was so cold and it was only three blocks away so I thought that I could drive. Felicia: And what happened? Ludde: It was slippery and really darkā€¦ And a car came. I hit the brakes in time, but itā€¦ Yeah. Right after he pushed me out of the car and yelled that I should run home straight away. He really didnā€™t want me to get into trouble. So, yeahā€¦ It was fucking bad luck. I want to just gather everybody and scream that it was me. Felicia: Heyā€¦ I love you. Ludde: I love you too. I love you so fucking much.
As Ludde is telling Felicia what happened as the other car came, we see a silent flashback of it along with Ludde's voice narrating. We see Andreas pulling him out of the car and yelling. Cutting to this scene that we've already seen in the beginning but might've forgotten about is a smart choice and makes the story Ludde is telling more real. We see it unfolding as Ludde is telling this to Felicia. It's a powerful scene.
We then see Felicia hugging Ludde from behind, a sign of support with no words needed. She tells him she loves him and Ludde says it back. It's an honest and sweet moment that comes at a perfect time in the story. It's not too early like Felicia's backstory was.
I sort of understand why Felicia's backstory was info-dumped because it was right before the drama of Mats accidentally spilling the beans to Klara's family. They wanted the audience to know what happened to her early, so they could move on to the plot point of Felicia thinking Ludde was the one who told everybody.
But we don't need every single detail of Felicia's story. Let it come organically. The only thing that was really needed was for Ludde to know that Felicia had struggled with drug use and was sent to rehab for this storyline to work. The reason why could've been saved for later, and it would've made for a more interesting reveal. Maybe just have Felicia allude to seeing something that night, but don't tell the viewers right away what it was.
In 1x06, Felicia is incredibly upset when she hears that her dad was the one who told Klara's family what happened to Felicia in the US. And rightly so.
Felicia: Donā€™t you get it? You ruined everything! Mats: What? Felicia: You told the whole damn town about me! About the US! Mats: I really didnā€™t mean to disclose you- Or disclose us. Sorry. Hey, sorry. Flisan, please. Hey. Felicia: Did you tell them you fucked momā€™s best friend too? Yes, I saw you.
If this had been the moment where we first find out what Felicia saw, it would've been more surprising. Our reaction would've mirrored Mats's, and it would've been more heart-wrenching to know that Felicia was traumatized by an affair her dad had only to be cheated on herself in the very same episode.
Ludde's problematic nature
One of the scriptwriters of Eagles, Fanny Ekstrand, was interviewed in the behind-the-scenes documentary Edvins SkƄdisdrƶmmar. In this interview, she states:
Ludvig, he's the one who's been the easiest to retain the personality of. Because he's so... He's calm and friendly, but he makes dumb decisions. Ludvig isn't a typical hockey guy. He has a bunch of other qualitiesā€”music being one of them.
I found myself slightly disagreeing with this take, despite knowing Ekstrand is literally a part of the writing team and most likely helped shaped Ludde's personality. I just interpreted Ludde's character (at least in season 1) differently.
I also didn't find him that much different from any other typical hockey guy just because he happens to have another interest. That's a bit like saying Archie Andrews from The CW's Riverdale isn't a stereotypical jock because he also plays the guitar.
In season 1, we see Ludde break into the rink because he wanted to test out the ice. He just loves hockey that much. He also uses it as a way to express frustration and anger, which we saw in 1x05. He flirts with the new girl in school and in the beginning he even uses it as a tactic to gain a position on the main hockey team. This was confirmed by the creator Stefan H. LindƩn in his Q&A, where he said:
My idea has always been that Ludde was blown away by Felicia and that he really likes her but that they both initially interacted and met to go swimming because Felicia knew it would piss her dad off and Ludde knew that it might throw Elias off since they were competing for the same position in the team.
I would say that the characteristics of a typical hockey guy would be someone like Adamā€”obsessed with the sport, flirting with girls, going to parties, and just spending a lot of time in the rink. Ludde checks off all of these points. However, I will give this the benefit of the doubt since season 2 Ludde seems to change a lot and it's easier to interpret him as the calm and friendly guy he was supposed to be in season 1.
So to me, Ludde wasn't calm and friendly at all. In season 2, yes, but when we're first introduced to him?
Ludde shows anger issues and violent tendencies in 1x05 when he head-butts Elias and breaks his nose. It's violent and messy. He then yells at Felicia to leave when she's trying to communicate with him and belittles her drug problems solely because she's rich. To me, Ludde wasn't a nice person in 1x04 either when he let his friends make suggestive comments about Felicia and what she was like in bed.
Omar: I can tell you one thing - youā€™re not borrowing my towel today cause I donā€™t know where that dick has been. Adam: Itā€™s nice when she sucks, right? Omar: Canā€™t you tell us some more, does she bite you or is it just really, really nice? [...] Adam: Is that what you sound like when youā€™re coming? What does she sound like?
This was described as "locker room talk" and the writers probably wanted to show an authentic view of what being a hockey player is like. I understand that. But it's a little problematic when it's later swept under the rug and treated like something that we're just supposed to accept.
Elias: [...] itā€™s not very fun to sit in a hockey locker room where people are talking about how nice it is to fuck my sister. Felicia: Ludde would never say anything like that, you know that. Elias: He wouldnā€™t? Itā€™s a locker room, Felicia. Thatā€™s the only thing they talk about.
It did not sit right with me how Felicia seemed to be the one Elias blamed in this scene, and Ludde and his friends never faced any real consequences for what they said. Elias did lash out at Ludde, but there was no severe consequence for Omar and Adam's comments.
Compare this scenario to another Swedish show, Beartown on HBO. Beartown is similar to Eagles and focuses on a hockey team in a small town with one of the star players hooking up with a girl who's recently moved to their small town.
This girl is raped by the hockey player. And because of his status as the star of the team, he has almost the whole school behind him. The girl however is labeled as a lying slut. It's unfair and frustrating to see it happen, but it's authentic and done in a way that doesn't glamorize the ugly side of hockey culture.
Eagles is not as dark as Beartown so this comparison might be a little unfair. Beartown's whole storyline did revolve around this incident while in Eagles the hockey culture is treated more as a side thought. It's like they decided to throw in a taste of what goes on in a locker room just to create drama without really addressing it further.
Beartown did a much better job of portraying the problematic and toxic elements of hockey culture without making it seem like it's just something normal that we should accept. It was honest and raw. If you haven't seen the show, this short video does a great job of depicting how much thought was put into the toxic hockey culture, winning mentality, and subsequently hockey players thinking they're entitled to do whatever they want.
So, to respond to Ekstrand's quote from Edvins SkĆ„disdrƶmmarā€”I did not experience Ludde as a "good guy" who only makes dumb decisions at all. In season 1, he's a bad person for letting his friends sexualize a girl he likes and letting her brother hear their disgusting comments. He's a bad person for fighting with her brother and later yelling at her, saying her drug issues are insignificant despite acting supportive of her only two episodes earlier.
I don't mind conflicts like these because they drive the story forward. I didn't particularly like Ludde in season 1 because of the reasons I just stated, but they're necessary to create drama and make the show interesting.
It's just weird to me how one of the writers is saying that Ludde is a calm person and a good guy when that is not at all how I interpreted his character.
Eagles is a show targeted towards a young audience, among them probably a lot of easily influenced pre-teens. What kind of message does this send to them when the guy letting his friends sexualize a girl he's slept with and on top of that laughing at their inappropriate comments is referred to as the good guy?
Klara is mean... What else?
From the moment we're introduced to Klara, it seems obvious that she'll play a living and breathing version of the infamous Alpha Bitch trope. She's also a prime example of the basic Popular is Evil trope and has her own Girl Posse consisting of Sara and Amie.
Klara feels threatened by the arrival of a potential new popular girl, Felicia, and does everything in her power to bully Felicia to show dominance. She barely shows any good sides of herself.
The only instance I can think of where we sort of see season 1 Klara in a positive light is when she talks to Amie in 1x05 about their friendship and then accompanies Amie to her audition for the school band.
Klara: Ever since Felicia started at schoolā€¦ Itā€™s felt like you only hang out with her and that youā€™ve forgotten about me. She like took you from me. Amie: But I havenā€™t forgotten you. Klara: No, but do you get what I mean? Amie: I get it, but I havenā€™t forgotten you. Klara: No, I know. Amie: I know, but it just turned out that way when school started. Klara: Okay. Amie: But Iā€™m sorry. Klara: Itā€™s fine. Amie: Are you sure? Klara: Yeah. You can make it up to me when you go on your world tour.
Klara is really supportive of Amie's musical endeavors, but she also uses her support as a way to alienate Felicia from the girl group. It's very on the nose and kind of feels suffocating in the way it's written.
Klara: Amie, did you remove the clips? Amie: Yeah, she said they werenā€™t good. Klara: Sheā€™s just jealous. Itā€™s so obvious. I mean, Iā€™m jealous. You sing absolutely amazing. I donā€™t know, I just think it was really rude of her to sit in the cafeteria and criticize you like that Amie: Yeah, maybe. But she apologized. Klara: But still. That clip of you in the bathroomā€¦ Likeā€¦ Sorry, but Iā€™d be so mad if someone had posted something like that of me. I mean, you were standing there without makeup, completely non-fixed up. And the whole thing with her filming you without you knowing. Thatā€™s really weird. You donā€™t do that. Donā€™t you think so?
I'm sure there are plenty of people who act like this in real life. And maybe that's part of the problem, because Klara in season 1 really isn't an interesting character. We've met this person before and we know exactly what she's like. There's nothing new to discover. So season 1 is essentially just Klara being petty and rude every chance she gets, and to me it felt like a large part of her character was written just to stir up drama.
In 1x06, we see Klara backstab Amie by filming her making out with Ludde at her Halloween party. But I thought it was established in 1x05 that Klara feels like Amie was taken from her? And if Klara actually cared about Amie and didn't want to lose her as a friend, she wouldn't just stand by and watch with her phone recording the whole thing. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Klara even made that whole point about how it was really weird of Felicia to film Amie without her knowing. So why would Klara do it, when she expressed that's weird and not something a normal person does? Is that supposed to be foreshadowing? Because if so, that's a clear contradiction and not how foreshadowing works.
When Sara happens to see the video on Klara's phone she immediately says that Klara should delete it.
Sara: What is that? Did they know you were filming? Klara: No, of course they didnā€™t know. Sara: Oh my god, Klara. You should probably delete it. Klara: Iā€™m going to! But itā€™s crazy, right? Sara: Yeah, god. But seriously, delete it. Klara: Iā€™m going to.
So Klara says she's going to delete the video. But it's still unclear why it was filmed in the first place if Klara insists that she's going to delete it. It's not like she filmed it just to show it to Sara either, since Sara wasn't meant to see it and only saw it by chance while swiping through Klara's photos on her phone.
It doesn't make sense for Klara to film a video like that of her best friend that she's supposed to care about. It doesn't make sense for Klara to film a video of anybody without their knowledge when she previously made a big deal about how you shouldn't do that.
What Klara's character is, is a bad attempt at the classical mean girl. She's clichƩd, boring, and full of tropes.
Even her eventual character development is riddled with tropes like the Heel Realization where a character realizes they're actually one of the bad guys. This realization seems to come in 1x08, where Felicia calls Klara out on her behavior.
Felicia: You know what, Klara. Iā€™m so fucking tired of your fucking comments. You didnā€™t get to be Lucia this year. Poor you! Was dad unable to fix that? Cry then, Klara. Cry. Youā€™re so fucking mean. Everybody here is tired- Everybody here is scared of you. Even those who liked you once, they canā€™t take it anymore. Klara: Thatā€™s not true. Itā€™s not true. Felicia: Yes, everybody is scared of you. You know what? Look around. Show people some fucking respect. Klara: Well say something, Amie! Amie: What is there to say? Sheā€™s right.
Klara needed a wake-up call like this. It's just unfortunate that she goes back to her mean girl behavior and posts the video after Amie insinuated that Klara wasn't a real friend. Klara already knew that Amie felt that way since she said Felicia was right in her assessment of everybody being scared and tired of Klara. So wouldn't it have made more sense for Klara to post the video right after that moment instead of during Amie's performance?
Or rather, why not pull a Subverted Trope and not have Klara post the video at all after she realized how horrible she'd been acting? That would've made me respect her so much more and be a great introduction to her character development in season 2.
The Halloween Incident
To me, the whole Halloween episode was questionable. First off, we never got actual confirmation of what happened in that room between Amie and Ludde. Some viewers insist that they only made out and others believe they went all the way. Here's what the creator of the show, Stefan H. LindƩn, had to say about this in a Q&A post he did:
I think if you went into the writers room of Eagles and asked all of us what really happened in that room [between Ludde and Amie at Klara's Halloween party] we would all have different answers.Ā  I know what happened, but Iā€™m not sure we will ever truly know for sure, unless Ludvig or Amie eventually are open enough to admit to anyone what really happened.
This is kind of a vague answer, but that's fair considering that when Stefan did this Q&A the latest episode that had been released was 2x05 and he probably didn't want to spoil anything. However, looking back at this answer knowing how the season turned out I still feel like it's unclear what happened. It's also strange that Stefan seems to be saying that they never actually decided what happened between them since the writers "would all have different answers".
1x06 was just an odd episode for me overall. Lots of things felt rushed and underdeveloped. Let's not forget that this episode also contained, in my opinion, some of the weirdest lines in the whole show (along with Elias's strange monologue about plague vampires).
Ludde: Hey, I only have like 3%. Do you have any power? Adam: Are you wondering if I have a power bank in my shorts? Itā€™s coming-
Ludde: I like shellfish. (said to Amie, wearing a lobster costume)
Up until this episode, Ludde has shown zero interest and attraction towards Amie. We are basically told that Ludde only hooked up with Amie because he was so drunk that he practically had no idea what he was doing.
In 1x02, we see a drunk Amie try to kiss Tobbe and upon getting rejected she moves on to make out with Adam. She gets overly friendly when she's drunk so the fact that she makes out with Ludde later is... Weird, but not entirely out of the realms of possibility.
Ludde on the other hand is moping about Felicia all night. He regrets how he yelled at her at the end of 1x05 and it shows. He's trying to drown all his problems in alcohol and it seems to be working, because when it enters his system he seems to be on top of the world.
What I found kind of ambiguous in this incident was if Ludde even remembered what happened that night. He was drinking so much compared to Amie, who doesn't really need as much alcohol before she reaches her "overly friendly" state. I thought for sure that Ludde was oblivious to the situation when he woke up in his bed the next day and immediately messaged Felicia.
There are just so many questions to unpack here that were never answered. What prompted Amie and Ludde to go into that empty room? Why did Ludde come with her? Why didn't Adam seem to care about this, when he'd been sitting next to Ludde and taking care of him most of the night? And as I wrote before, why would Klara film this video of her best friend when she previously expressed that was a weird thing to do?
There's just too much in 1x06 left unanswered. The Amie/Ludde hook-up was a badly executed plot twist because there wasn't anything hinting that this would happen. It just came out of nowhere.
Unbalanced screentime and Elias's wasted potential
A large portion of season 1 was dedicated to Felicia. This was kind of a let-down for me since I thought more focus would be placed on Eagles as a hockey team (after all, that's what the show is named after). I also thought more attention would be on Elias since he's the talented star player who's supposed to live up to his father's legacy.
The show starts with a couple radio hosts hyping up how Elias Kroon, son of the legendary Mats Kroon, is going to join the Eagles hockey team.
Host #1: [...] Itā€™s finally official. New center in the junior team - Elias Kroon, son to the legendary NHL-pro Mats Kroon, who has now chosen to move home from the US to his hometown where Elias will play in his fatherā€™s old club Oskarshamn Eagles. Host #2: This is so freaking cool. Who doesnā€™t want a Kroon on their team? Host #1: We hope that heā€™ll take a spot on the A-team.
But we don't learn a lot about who Elias actually is in the first episode. The attention is on Felicia and her interest in Ludde.
Elias is so discarded that he barely has anything to say in the first couple of scenes we see him in. Here are all his eight lines in 1x01, and I'm not even joking.
Elias: Yes. Elias: Shut up. Elias: Ow. Elias: It's fine. Elias: Really? Elias: Fucking hell. Elias: I'll stay here. Elias: No, it's fine.
In 1x02 he has even fewer lines. Three, to be exact, and all he says is that his injury is a sprain and that it's fine. Essentially just an echo of two of the lines he had in the previous episode. It's nothing new.
There's a way to have a character stand out when they don't have many lines, but Elias just fades into the background with every other extra. There's too much time spent on having other characters talk about Elias than us actually getting to know him. So when we do meet him, it's pretty underwhelming.
Compare Elias to his sister who gets so much more attention from the writers. I don't really understand why either, since I thought Elias was a much more interesting character than his influencer sister. Felicia's character only seems to revolve around a guy. I wonder how many times we've seen that before?
In 1x02 we see the Eagles hockey team play their first game, but Elias is unable to play and has to sit in the stands for what was supposed to be his debut match. Why? Because during a hockey practice session in 1x01, Adam rams his stick into Elias to purposely injure him. I mean, fair enough. Adam is trying to get Ludde on the main team since he and Elias are competing for the same position. The shot of Adam smiling after Elias sprains his wrist is a bit too on the nose, but whatever.
What this does is minimize Elias' presence in season 1 by a lot. We don't see the son of the legendary NHL professional play an actual game until 1x05, which is more than halfway into the season. It's kind of disappointing but I understand the injury is done to dramatize his situation.
Elias barely gets his own storylines in the first few episodes. He just has things done to him instead of acting on his own. When we do see him on screen he gets injured by Adam, reprimanded by his father, and later told he can't play in his debut game.
His sweet side (or any side of him, really) isn't shown until 1x03 when Amie wakes up at the Kroon house and Elias reassures her that they didn't do anything together and that she can borrow Felicia's clothes.
Elias doesn't really do much for the plot until he hears Ludde's friends objectify Felicia and he starts a fight with Ludde and confronts Felicia about it. That's when it feels like Elias is actually a part of this show instead of just being an extra shoved into the background. His actions are finally affecting the plot.
Elias's potential in season 1 was hugely wasted. The only episode where we actually got to see him shine was 1x07, when he travels to Karlskrona with Amie. We find out he doesn't want the hockey arrangement his dad has planned for him and that he's actually a pretty goofy guy who likes making jokes (and eating green candy).
If less time was spent with Felicia and the distribution of every episode's 20 minutes was more balanced, season 1 could've been massively improved. It got much better in season 2, but season 1 suffered and made many people think that Felicia was a basic and unentertaining character.
The side characters and their comic relief
So one thing that I found really disappointing with Felicia's amount of screentime is that we barely got enough time for the other main characters, let alone the side characters.
What I mean here is that the only people we really know on the Eagles hockey team are Ludde and Elias. Ludde's friends, Adam and Omar, just feel like comic relief sidekicks. We don't really know what they're like, besides the fact that they like to make jokes and mess around.
This issue is largely created by the short running time the episodes have along with season 1 only having eight episodes in total. That's definitely understandable. It did get better in season 3 where we see Ludde having a deeper conversation with Adam and Omar and they finally don't just feel like the comic relief characters, but actual people with layers.
Ludde: Iā€™m going to quit hockey. Adam: Are you serious? Omar: What the hell are you saying? Ludde: Itā€™s not the same anymore. Iā€™m not passionate about it. Iā€¦ Yes, it sucks, butā€¦ Iā€™ve thought about it for a while now. Omar: We make jokes about it and all, butā€¦ Yeah. It wouldnā€™t be the same without you. Kingelikingen. Adam: I get that itā€™s a tough choice. But yeahā€¦ Youā€™ll work things out. You and Felicia. You always do. Ludde: You guys are pretty awesome sometimes, actually.
This scene was really sweet, and I wish we could've had moments like this between the guys in season 1. Just one scene to show that they're not just the "typical hockey guys". It feels like Ludde was the only person on the team in season 1 who wasn't just a background character. Even Elias, who you would assume should be at the forefront, isn't properly developed until 1x05 where we see him defending his sister and starting a fight with Ludde. Otherwise, it very much felt like Elias was kept in the background.
There are also guys on the team called Herman, Simon, NƤslund, EkbƤck, Hoffmann, Berglund (even Montell, which was a fun nod to the show's director)... But who are they, actually? Do you even remember their names? To be honest with you, I don't. Because they're just namesā€”not actual characters.
None of the other guys on the team get any depth. They're just sort of there as extras and to give the audience a sense of comedy with their "hockey team shenanigans". This was illustrated in 1x08, where Adam and Omar make their teammate Liam do a "sexy dance" on a table because he lost his virginity. Or a more extreme exampleā€”Jƶnsson, who only exists to be the comic relief and the unlucky guy who just can't catch a break.
In 2x04, Jƶnsson is told by Jack to do extra time in the gym and gets told off when he only spends a few minutes on the exercise bike. Later, Jack also makes a joke about how he should get Jƶnsson a defibrillator. In 2x09 Jƶnsson invites Ludde, Adam, and Omar to come to his mom's place to hang out. After he's left, Adam makes a comment about how there's no way he's going to "rot" in Jƶnsson's apartment that doesn't even have a balcony.
Don't get me wrong, these scenes aren't bad and I don't mean they should've been scrapped. Comedy can absolutely have its place in a show like this. Let's take the scene where Ludde flashes a couple of unfortunate old ladies on his first date with Felicia as an example. It feels like something a teenage boy would do to try to make a girl he likes laugh. It's a brief scene and it's nice to see Ludde being able to goof off only moments after talking about Andreas. We know that's a touchy subject for him.
However, it feels slightly overdone sometimes with how almost everybody on the hockey team is only there for comedic purposes and to fill space. It's more refreshing when they're shown to be multi-dimensional. I wish this is something that the writers would've considered when the show is literally titled after the hockey team, yet most of the hockey players are hardly in the story.
To add to this, it felt like Sara and Tobbe completely disappeared from the story in season 2. With Sara we understand that she probably didn't want to hang out with Klara anymore after knowing she filmed the Halloween video and posted it on Instagram, so that's fair. But it would've been nice to see Tobbe stick around in season 2, and I'll get back to why I think that.
The potential of season 1
When I look back on season 1 I feel really nostalgic. No matter how many small details that irked me, I can't deny that the setting of the show is beautiful and I really appreciate the depiction of it. Instead of showing Oskarshamn as a boring small town, we're shown the beauty of it which is incorporated into the storylines.
Some examples would be Ludde and Felicia's first date at Gunnarsƶ and walk through HavslƤtt, the gorgeous view of the Oskarshamn harbor from Klara's house Villa Hƶgklint, and Badholmen where the school band performs and we later see Elias and Amie walking by in season 3. All these places are listed on the Eagles Oskarshamn site and I feel like they did a great job tying the storylines in with the locations.
Another aspect of season 1 and its writing that I really enjoyed was Elias and Amie's budding relationship. They just have a natural chemistry together and the dialogue between them also felt authentic and sweet.
Season 1 is just a very polished teen drama overall compared to some of SVT's previous series.
Back in 2007-2010, SVT used to air a soap opera-style show focusing on a few teenagers living in Gothenburg that was called Andra Avenyn (translation: Second Avenue). I was only seven at the time but I watched this show religiously as it aired three times a week. Just mentioning the show brings a lot of nostalgia.
Andra Avenyn amassed around 500 000 viewers per episode and was, just like Eagles, nominated for a Kristallen television award. But how good was it, really? If I take off my rose-colored glasses for a second and actually consider the show's highly dramatized storylines and unlikely scenarios, it had a tendency to drag on (which usually happens with soap operas). It didn't offer a realistic view of teenage life and on IMDb it currently sits at a rating score of 5.6 stars out of 10.
Comparing this old teen series to SVT's newer one, Eagles season 1 was a huge improvement and continues to be the most popular teen series that SVT has aired so far.
This idea and all the characters have lived in Stefan H. LindƩns mind since 2008, while Andra Avenyn was still on the air. It's actually amazing how high the quality of most TV shows has risen since then. Eagles has a rating score of 7.4 out of 10 stars on IMDb and has become internationally known in a way that Andra Avenyn never was.
Eagles season 1 laid the groundwork for SVT's most successful teen series of all time, and that's a huge achievement.

Season 2: "Subverting expectations"
When Eagles came back for season 2, the script made it kind of obvious that the writers had listened to the critique of season 1 being predictable.
I did find season 2 a huge step up from season 1ā€”the directing was so much better and when it came to the script we got a deeper look into all the characters that they hadn't really scratched the surface of in the first season. My main disappointment however was that it felt like they threw in a bunch of weird plot twists just for the sake of "subverting expectations".
The core idea of subverting expectations can be great if done correctly. You lead the audience to believe they know what's going to happen, but then you surprise them with an unexpected and clever twist.
A post in Cinematography written by Mason Leaver defines the phrase of "subverting expectations" as:
[...] a method of surprising the audience with some element of a story, be it the plot, themes, characters, etc. This goes beyond a ā€œtwistā€ in a film. Expectation subversion actively works within the genre of a story, and attempts to reinterpret or subvert the conventions of that genre, breaking patterns in surprising and interesting ways. However, this method of surprising the audience is not always well received- it can sometimes be the source of heavy criticism from fans of the tropes which have been subverted.
This included "unexpected" relationships such as Elias/Klara and Amie/Ludde. The former actually worked, but the latter? Not so much.
Amie's crush on Luddeā€”make it make sense!
Amie and Ludde were my biggest issue with season 2, and it felt so out of character of Amie to be head over heels for Ludde. They work great as friends but romantically they're a huge mismatch.
But they have music in common, I hear you say. Yes, they do. But having a shared interest doesn't mean people are automatically a good match. You have to consider their chemistry and overall compatibility.
Before actors are cast in a show or movie where their characters will be romantically involved with each other, it's common to do what's called a chemistry read. Here's a neat description from an article in Backstage written by Caroline Liem:
Chemistry is the complex emotional or psychological interaction between two people. If this were a romantic article, it would be about love. Instead, we are discussing the astonishing rapport between two actors, and how that connection is achieved in order to book [...] the role. A chemistry read is an opportunity to read with actors being considered for a role opposite yours, usually lead roles. The main purpose is to see how you instinctively connect and work with the other actor.
This obviously wasn't done for the actors playing Amie and Ludde, since there didn't seem to be any intention of having their characters be involved in a romantic relationship.
That was even confirmed by Stefan H. LindƩn in his Q&A of season 2, where he said that a love triangle between Ludde/Felicia/Amie was planned but later scrapped.
I can confirm that from the beginning of development of the series and the first version of the storyline a triangle drama was at some point intended for season 1 but later removedĀ  ā€“ however when creating the characters, Ludvigs skill in music and arts was always there from the beginning so by knowing that, we always knew that interactions would appear between them. When looking back at Season 1, in the first scene by the lockers when Amie tells Felicia who Ludvig is, she does know exactly who he is and she is well aware of that his friend Tobias is a music guy that Amie wants to get to know. Also when looking at it, when I was the same age as Ludvig and Amie I, and I am sure a lot of people can relate to it, fact is that we never really knew if it was love or friendship in the beginning.
Knowing that the triangle drama was scrapped for season 1, it makes sense why it seems so arbitrary. There was no groundwork laid down for this pairing before it was hastily thrown together in 1x06 for a cheap plot twist. This continues in season 2, where Amie and Ludde start spending more time together. Yet it's hard to see Ludde as a potential love interest for Amie in the way the writers want us to. They still come off as friends despite having hooked up at a party.
I mentioned that Tobbe should've stuck around for season 2 and here's why. Tobbe was written to be the leader of the school band that Amie later joins, and he was friends with Ludde before the video was posted. He would've been a perfect fit for the Amie/Ludde music storyline but he's completely absent. He had the potential to be the person who could've helped them with the song a little and then later picked up on whatever there was going on between them.
I think the Amie/Ludde storyline could've hugely benefitted from a scene between Amie and Tobbe, where Tobbe asks if she actually has feelings for Ludde and we get to hear exactly what Amie is feeling. Maybe she's torn, not wanting to get together with Ludde because of how much they hurt Felicia, but at the same time finds it hard to suppress her feelings. A scene like that would've allowed us to get into Amie's head and make the Amie/Ludde storyline much clearer.
To add, this storyline was in desperate need of more interest from Ludde's side. There needed to be some indication from him that would make Amie believe he liked him back, even if that wasn't the case. All we get is Ludde complimenting Amie's song and then a hug in 2x05 when Amie says the record label in Stockholm wanted a meeting. And apparently, that was enough for Amie to think Ludde was interested in her despite him blowing off the Stockholm meeting and Amie hearing Ludde say that the Halloween incident was a mistake.
Ludde and Amie don't really mesh as well as Elias/Amie do or even as well as Ludde/Felicia do. Elias and Amie had sparks flying from the very first scene they shared. That pairing is one of the main reasons why the show became popular internationally, and why is that? Because of the actors' chemistry.
Amie and Ludde are a clumsy attempt at throwing together two people who don't really work together with the intention of "subverting expectations". And I suppose that's what the writers wanted to depictā€”an awkward crush that doesn't really make sense, which I'm sure many people have experienced as a teenager. That part is fine. But what I didn't like about this storyline is that Amie had no good reason to believe Ludde would be interested in anything with her beyond a platonic friendship.
While season 2 was airing, I was convinced that Amie wasn't actually in love with Ludde. She was just lonely after the aftermath of the Halloween video and mistook her feelings for Ludde as love when she just appreciated his company. Here's what I wrote:
So as we know, Amie kissed Ludde in episode 6 when he was in the hospital after having been injured during the hockey game against Karlskrona. She immediately seemed to regret having done that and ran out without an explanation, leaving Ludde alone and confused. I honestly donā€™t think Amie has any romantic feelings towards Ludde. I think she might mistake her feelings for a crush or something, when in reality sheā€™s just lonely and appreciates Ludde always being there for her and giving her compliments on her musical ability. Ludde was complimenting Amie at the hospital, saying she was amazing, and I think Amie was just really touched by that and maybe wanted to thank him somehow, and ended up kissing him. And then she freaked out and left because oh my god did she really just kiss Ludde. It was an uncomfortable and awkward situation and thatā€™s probably why she ran out. However, I really believe that if she had just stayed to explain and apologize, Ludde would understand and they couldā€™ve just laughed it off. But this is a drama show so of course that wouldnā€™t happen! Do I think the writers are making them into a couple? No, definitely not. They know that season 1 was sort of predictable and clichĆ©, so theyā€™re making season 2 as different as possible by including these unexpected pairings such as Klara & Elias and Amie & Ludde. But Amie and Ludde wonā€™t ever be a couple, because Ludde is still very much hung up on Felicia. I donā€™t see them as a couple either - yes, they have music in common, but they work way better as friends than in a relationship.
In Edvins SkĆ„disdrƶmmar, which is a behind-the-scenes documentary of Eagles season 2, writers Fanny Ekstrand and Michaela Hamilton discuss the writing of the show in the documentary's third episode. The third episode is mostly focused on the lead-up to the scene where Amie kisses Ludde at the hospital. Adrian Ɩjvindsson, who plays Ludde, says:
Filming the kissing scene was [...] awkward and weird, actually. And that's how it ended up. Yandeh and I haven't really had any intimate scenes. In this case you could take in that it was weird, because that's also what the scene wanted to depict.
When Edvin reads the script, he describes the scene as a "nightmare" scenario. I agree. And the lazy build-up to this Awkward Kiss trope doesn't make it any better, because just like the Halloween incident this doesn't make a lot of sense.
It's supposed to be awkward and weird, just like Adrian said. But he also mentioned one of the most important details: Yandeh and I haven't really had any intimate scenes.
Before this kiss scene, there was nothing that indicated any chemistry between them. No accidental hand-touching, no longing stares, no nothing. Just a friendly hug. A proper build-up to the kiss scene would've made it feel less out of place.
The love confession from Amie to Ludde in 2x10 really threw me off as well. The confession to me made no sense and honestly felt like a prank call. There was no feeling behind it and zero reason for Amie to believe that there was a chance Ludde liked her back.
At the end of 2x08, Felicia goes to Ludde's house after he's confessed the truth to the police about the Andreas situation. Amie happens to overhear the conversation and she hears Ludde very clearly say that he's not interested in Amie.
Ludde: Felicia, thereā€™s nothing between us. Between me and Amie. It was really the biggest mistake of my life. Felicia: Goodbye, Ludde. Ludde: Felicia, please!
Amie, now having her heart broken, crosses Ludde's name off the contract while crying. She knows he doesn't feel the same. So why would Amie even bother to call Ludde up to tell him she's "in love with him"?
Amie: [...] Hey, Luddeā€¦ Ludde: Yeah? Amie: It feels really weird to hear our song now. Because I know who the lyrics are about. Andā€¦ And Iā€¦ I really like you. Or, wellā€¦ Iā€™m in love with you. I just need to know how you feel. Or if you feel anything. Just tell me. Ludde: Iā€™ll always want to be your friend, Amie, butā€¦ Itā€™s Felicia Iā€™m in love with.
This moment is on par with the awkwardness from the hospital kiss between them in 2x06. The second-hand embarrassment with this one was really rough, and what I don't understand is why this was even added to the script when Amie had already gotten the confirmation that Ludde didn't think of her in a romantic way. This storyline could've ended in 2x08 after Amie overheard the conversation between Ludde and Felicia.
It really didn't need to drag on for the whole season, essentially making Amie's whole storyline in season 2 about a guy. Her moment of finally getting signed to the record label was ruined when it could've been regarded as a fresh start if the storyline had just ended where it should have.
What this storyline did instead was ruining my favorite friendship of season 1, which was Amie/Felicia. This mess made it so hard for them to reconcile and they didn't end up properly addressing it until 3x09, spending almost two whole seasons mad at each other. It sucks that the writers decided to drag out their fighting and disagreements for this long when they could've instead shown two girls in solidarity who don't let a guy get between them and their friendship.
Amie apologized in 3x03 for how she hurt Felicia, but Felicia made it clear in 3x06 that she still harbored ill will towards Amie for what happened at Halloween (which in the timeline of this show was more than a year ago).
Felicia (to Amie): Are you going to start slobbering with [Elias] now too? Just give me back that sweater first, I donā€™t want slobber on that. Thanks.
I talked about how much I disliked the Amie/Ludde storyline in this post, with my main reason being that it really messed up the character dynamics that were established in season 1.
This storyline [of Ludde and Amie hooking up]ā€”along with Amie falling in love with Luddeā€”is by far my least favorite one because it messed up the whole character dynamic. I feel like Amie and Felicia wonā€™t ever go back to the kind of friendship they had in season 1 before the Halloween incident because the trust was so broken, and Amie really shouldā€™ve tried harder to apologize to Felicia like Ludde did instead of going after her best friendā€™s ex in season 2.
If there's just one thing I could change about this show, I would 100% get rid of the Amie/Ludde storylines. There is nothing that annoyed me as much as those storylines did.
Amie's musical ambitions
I've talked about this a bit before in another post because this was something that really bugged me about Amie's character in season 2. Here's what I wrote:
I honestly still feel like Amieā€™s whole storyline with sending in a rather basic demo written by two teenagers with little to no experience and then getting praised on it [by the Stockholm music producers] with comments such as ā€œitā€™s going to be a real summer hitā€ felt so unrealistic to me. Maybe they only said that so Amie would accept their offer or something, but thatā€™s still very strange because she would have still said yes without a doubt. I can understand that they thought Amie was marketable as a person and there was this bonus with her having gone viral before on Feliciaā€™s Instagram, but that demo did not seem good enough for me to be immediately released as a single and then have them decide on the spot that Amie would be given a contract. I mean, come on. It never felt earned because we never really saw Amie struggling with her songwriting journey to achieve this dream. Sending in one demo to one record label and having them immediately want to make a whole album with you just doesnā€™t happen in real life unless the song is extremely good or you have a very unique voice. Amie is really talented but there are hundreds of people just like her, if not thousands. I was never convinced by her getting signed so quickly in season 2. I understand that they wanted to establish her as a successful artist [at the beginning of season 3], but that felt so rushed. I was so sure that the record label would screw her over and steal the song rights to record it with another artist who was already established, and that weā€™d have to see Amie work even harder to achieve her dreams. But we didnā€™t get that at all. Where was the struggle? [...] Of course I wanted to see Amie achieve success (and I was happy when she did), but the journey there was so bizarrely easy. She didnā€™t start to seriously work on making her music career become a reality until season 2. Amie had dabbled in music prior to that, like when she auditioned for the school band and did that performance of Follow, but she didnā€™t truly start to work towards it until season 2 when she decided to have her work sent to professionals in the business. And then, just five episodes later, she gets contacted by the record label in Stockholm. To put this into contextā€”season 2 took place somewhere around March, and episode 5 around three weeks into April. So when Ludde first started helping Amie it took less than two months for her to get signed. You could argue that the song was just that good or that Amie is just that talented, but it never felt like a realistic storyline to me.
It's tricky to write a storyline like this when you only have ten 20 minute episodes in the season and a limited amount of screentime for every character. All that is understandable. But it's strange that they didn't opt for a time jump to really sell this storyline and make it believable.
Eagles uses time jumps a lot, but somehow this particular plot point was omitted from that and kind of glossed over. I don't really understand how they expected us to buy this storyline. The viewers aren't stupid, and more effort should've been put into this storyline.
In the post where I wrote this, @gajana18 also had an interesting thing to add:
[...] it's equally unrealistic that this huge record company would be hounding Amie, a teenage onehit wonder essentially to come back to the label- donā€™t they have other bigger artists?
This is a very strong point. Considering how Amie kept expressing that she wanted to finish school and then proceeded to ignore their calls, it's weird that they didn't just decide to discard her contract when Amie clearly wasn't taking her singing career as seriously as they wanted her to.
So, back to season 2. Maybe they could've gone with the record label stealing the rights to Amie's first song and screwing her over. This fuels her to try again and after a time jump of a few months we see Amie having worked really hard on a new and better song. Maybe even a whole album. And this time, she's learned from her past mistakes and improved her songwriting. This time, she's successful in her endeavor and it feels so much more earned after knowing the struggles she's been through to get there.
I also feel like a storyline like that would've made people sympathize with Amie more in season 2. It was really hard to root for her when she had nearly screwed Ludde over by not giving credit to his songwriting and saying "fuck him" when he didn't return Amie's feelings.
Klara's character development
When we're introduced to Klara in season 1, she's a stereotypical mean girl with wealthy parents who is the popular girl at school and has her own followers.
In season 2, the writers decided to develop the character. We find out Klara has issues at home and her mom is barely there. When she is, her parents will start fighting. Klara is feeling really lonely and doesn't really hang out with her friend Sara as much as she used to.
I appreciated the added depth, but it seemed like a drastic shift. The changed perspective could attribute to that but when you step back and really look at s1 Klara and s2 Klara, they're like two completely different people.
Maybe Klara's reputation suffered after she posted the Halloween video? Maybe she had a change of heart after Felicia finally confronted her during Lucia? I mean, I guess.
But what most fans (including me) didn't like about Klara in season 2 was that there were no clear consequences for her after she posted the Halloween video. Klara still hangs out with what seems to be the popular crowd and she has people to go out with. In a post I wrote last year about my thoughts on season 2, I wrote this:
I actually wish that Klara wouldā€™ve become more ostracized from her school friends to emphasize how alone she is, but she seems to still be pretty popular so that was kind of disappointing. I thought the fall-out of her posting the video would be worse, but I guess not. Anyway, I like that theyā€™re taking a disliked character and making her into a better person. Feels like itā€™s been done a few times before, but I still appreciate them doing it. I hated s1 Klara for being so one-dimensional, but s2 Klara is well on her way to being a pretty good and nuanced character.
Her character development sort of comes a little out of nowhere, though. Her reputation wasn't ruined by posting that video and she didn't really lose any friends besides Sara (she had already lost Amie prior to posting that video considering what Amie said to her after Lucia in 1x08).
So what prompted Klara to become this whole new person who actually considers other people's feelings in a relatively short amount of time? Here's a conversation between Felicia and Klara in 2x07.
Felicia: Was there anything in particular you wanted to talk about? I understand that weā€™re not best friends just because you and Elias are together. Weā€™re not here without a reason, right? Klara: No, I get that this feels weird for you. And if you donā€™t trust me after everything thatā€™s happened - or that Iā€™ve done. Felicia: Klaraā€¦ Klara: I know that I havenā€™t acted like the worldā€™s best person. And I regret that. Sorry.
But why does Klara regret her past behavior? What made her realize she hadn't acted like the "world's best person" if the ramifications from posting the Halloween video were so minimal?
Was it the relationship with Elias that made Klara change? No, I don't think so. When they first start talking at the bar in 2x03, Elias tells Klara that he doesn't always agree with Felicia and that he has his own viewpoints. In 2x07, he says Klara wasn't the one who messed up, but rather Amie and Ludde. And in 2x09, the script tells us that the Elias/Klara relationship seemed to bring more change to Elias rather than Klara.
Felicia: What did you do to him? Klara: What? Felicia: Heā€™s smiling. Elias is like a whole new person since he met you. Klara: Stop. Felicia: I mean it!
So what made Klara change? In 1x08 she's mocking Felicia's drug problems and posts a video that will for sure ruin Amie's reputation. But at the start of season 2, she's suddenly become more withdrawn and considerate of people's feelings.
I can only name one factor that actually makes sense, and that's the fighting between her parents. Klara seems to turn into this quiet child when she has to listen to her mom and dad yelling at each other. This is something that didn't really begin until season 2, when Ola's company GECED started going under. This storyline was very well done.
But the other things, like Klara's reputation and friend group which you would assume would be affected, remain as they were in season 1.
Jack's sudden character change
Jack came into season 2 as a charming and charismatic character, seemingly fooling everybody into thinking he was a good guy. He knew the Kroon family from before and both Felicia and Elias were none the wiser when it came to the eventual reveal of his true colors.
Here's what Stefan H. LindƩn had to say about the Jack character in his season 2 Q&A:
Bringing Jack in was actually originally not my idea, it came from my writer colleagues after that they revised my storyline notes for Season 2, while I was still down in Oskarshamn shooting Season 1. We had always intended for a character to come in and raise the stakes but I never imagined it to be Jack. When we started to develop the character, we all started liking him so he was kept in the story. Like with any new character we never really know who they are and what [the] point of them for coming in is [...]
Personally, I feel like the point of Jack's character is pretty obvious. When he first comes to Oskarshamn he is very much the embodiment of the new love interest coming in to date the girl who has broken up with her previous lover, while the previous lover still loves her and does anything he can to get her back although she's dating someone new. Jack is the Romantic False Lead trope who later becomes an alpha-dog Jerkass.
What I found interesting about Jack compared to Klara (in season 1) is that Jack isn't just a bad guy. He's very clever with his manipulation tactics and can easily charm people with his good looks and charisma.
When Felicia accuses Jack of cheating in 2x07, he manages to spin the whole thing around and make Felicia apologize to him and say it was stupid of her to believe he would cheat on her. I talked about this in a post while the season still aired, before Jack's true colors were revealed. Here's what I wrote:
I still donā€™t know if Jack really is cheating on Felicia with Olivia (the girl that texted him) but I would say he is. Jack is incredibly confident and charming, which makes him able to easily lie and manipulate people. We know heā€™s not an entirely good person since heā€™s already lied to Elias about not knowing that Mats would bring him back to Eagles. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if he really did hook up with Olivia and ended up being a really good liar. The fact is that not only did he deny it but he then shamed Felicia for blaming him and causing a scene, ultimately shifting the focus in the argument to her and making Felicia feel bad that she even confronted him in the first place. Jack says that maybe they shouldnā€™t even be together, which causes Felicia to backtrack and apologize. Itā€™s actually pretty impressive how Jack was able to spin that around to blame Felicia and make her apologize.
Jack is able to take a small detail and use it as ammunition to get what he wants. In this situation, he brings up the girl in the Stockholm club that Felicia partied with and also kissed.
Jack: You shouldnā€™t accuse me, either. Felicia: What? Jack: I saw on Instagram, you and some girl in Stockholm. Have I whined about that? Coming here and blaming me for things, it feels really immature. Felicia: Fuck. Sorry, Jack.
Jack wasn't bothered by that at all. It happened before Felicia and Jack were even an official couple, and all they had done was hooking up at a party while Felicia was high. Jack, having cheated on Felicia, couldn't care less about the random girl Felicia kissed. That was just something he used to manipulate her.
When we discover that Jack is actually cheating on Felicia, he immediately reverts to a one-dimensional "evil" character. He's become the 2.0 version of Klara in season 1ā€”written in just to stir up drama.
This "master manipulator" version of him just goes down the drain and Jack turns into a manchild who starts petty fights, files a police report because Ludde pushed him, and says to Felicia "I'm gonna tell on you!". Alright, maybe those weren't his exact words, but you know what I mean. It's a sudden shift and you start wondering how Jack was able to hide this version of himself so well before.
In 3x05, Jack sees Ludde and Andreas after a hockey game and fumbles trying to find any insult he can to hurl at Ludde. Everything he says from that point on is just line after line to really solidify that Jack is the bad guy. You didn't forget that, right? Here, let's have Jack call Felicia a druggie so you know just how shitty he is. And have him call Andreas a junkie later for good measureā€”there, that should be enough for people to understand that Jack is the villain here.
Jack: Johansson! Ludde: What the hell are you doing here? Jack: What does it look like? Ludde: I guess itā€™s you I should thank for the victory. Nice work. Jack: What is Felicia doing these days, then? Does she miss me? Ludde: Hey, youā€™re shutting up now, do you get it?! Jack: Jesus Christ. Do you think you can save her? What do you think she even sees in you? You two play in different leagues, Ludde. Ludde: You have no idea what weā€™re like. Jack: Come on! You should leave her. While you can. Sheā€™ll just pull you down into the dirt with her. Youā€™re no hero, Ludde. Isnā€™t she still doing drugs? Once a druggie, always a druggie, right?
Jack is a horrible person, but at least he was able to pretend to be a good guy in season 2. And that was actually really fascinating. I wish we could've seen more of Jack's manipulative side that he showed in season 2 instead of making everything coming out of his mouth be a half-assed attempt at insulting the other person. That's a pretty boring villain, in my opinion.
Jack's backstory of his father being an alcoholic and him starting to resent the whole Kroon family because they had everything growing up while he didn't is interesting. It would've also made more sense if his anger was only directed towards the Kroon family since they're the ones he grew up with. They're the ones he was after the whole time.
His anger towards them feels cheapened when Jack also starts insulting Andreas (who he's probably never met before) for no good reason. It's like Jack's human qualities are just gone and all that's left is this empty shell made to start fights. His backstory didn't really make anybody sympathize with him, either.
The improvements of season 2
What I liked about the writing in season 2 was that they explored new ideas and had some solid storylines (besides the mess that was Amie and Ludde). Elias and Klara actually worked pretty well as a couple, even if they were pretty much the 2.0 version of Felicia/Ludde as the "wealthy, popular pretty girl starts dating the star player on the sports team".
Felicia finally gets some more depth. The scene at the end of 2x02, where Felicia and Leila park their car near the harbor and just start crying, is so powerful.
2x05 is also one of my favorite episodes of the show, as well as the ending montage of the 2x10 season finale. In Gameday, we had a very touching scene between Felicia and Mats where they finally communicate. It's not the most understanding conversation but it's a start. It's an interesting contrast between their talk in 1x06 where Felicia revealed she saw Mats cheating on Leila versus the talk they're having now.
Another one of my favorite scenes is when Felicia and Ludde meet up at their bench in 2x10 after Ludde has called her up asking Felicia to come if there's any chance of them getting back together.
The dialogue is simple and to the point. There's no long-winded love confession for the sake of drama. It's a moment that the whole season has been building up for, and when we finally get there we realize that this is how love should be.
Easy and simple.
Ludde: You came back. Felicia: Yeah, I did. Ludde: Do you remember our first date here? Felicia: No. Iā€™ve forgotten. Ludde: I was so freaking nervous. Felicia: Everything you saidā€¦ Did you mean it? Because you hurt me, Ludvig. And Iā€¦ Iā€™ve really tried to hurt you back, butā€¦ Itā€™s not possible. I canā€™tā€¦ Not love you. Do you thinkā€¦ Do you think it can be us again? Ludde: What do you think? Felicia: I donā€™t want anything else.
Ludde admitting how nervous he was on their first date is sweet and shows us how much they've been through. Felicia is struggling to find the words to say and she's acknowledging how hurt she was, but still can't seem to find it in her heart to hate Ludde. It's honest.
Another plotline that I think was a little underrated in season 2 is the GECED company going bankrupt and Ola, Klara's dad, is under investigation for financial crime. This isn't a storyline you would usually see in a teen series. It's much more serious. It also gave us a really touching and poignant scene in 2x08 between Ola and Klara sitting on the floor of his office, where Klara has to comfort her father who starts crying.
Ola: When you were little you used to sit like this. On the floor, while I was working. You had your own room, but you wanted to sit with me.Ā ā€œHelp daddy workā€. Momā€™s doing the right thing by leaving for a while, donā€™t blame her for that. Klara: What, you canā€™t just leave because things get a little tough. Ola: Maybe you should get away for a while too. You know, I never wanted you two toā€¦ That youā€¦ Everythingā€™s gone. Klara: It will be fine. It will be fine. Ola: Sorry. Iā€™m sorry.
In 2x09, Klara is at a party when she notices a bunch of missed calls from her dad. She immediately senses something is wrong and rushes home to find her dad having attempted suicide. It's executed very well and I really liked the more serious tone they went for in season 2.
It set up season 3 perfectly, which continued with the darker themes but balanced them very well with the more light-hearted moments.

Season 3: Finding one's footing
Season 3 was a highly anticipated season. I thought the season 2 finale was masterfully done and it left me wanting more. When season 1 finished on its cliffhanger of the video leaking, the focus only seemed to be on that.
But with season 2 there's Felicia/Ludde getting back together and Ludde having been sued by Jack, Jack threatening that he would leak all of the Kroon's family secrets, Klara's dad passing away, Elias deciding to get on the train and go to the draft combine anyway, Amie having finally become a recording artist but being isolated and heartbroken... There's so much to unpack, and it's a lot more interesting than the ending of season 1.
Where's Jack?
Jack is supposed to be the main villain but he's gone for most of the season, failing to show up until 3x05. In the season 2 finale Jack makes a huge deal about how he's going to destroy Felicia's life. He's threatening her in a very violent and abusive way.
Jack: [...] I know a lot about you, Felicia. And your nice family. Itā€™s enough for me to leak to one news site. I can destroy you. Do you get it? Iā€™ll tell them everything. The drugs, the cheating, your abortion! Felicia: Shut up! Jack: Hey. Huh? Did you seriously think I wanted to be with you? The little Kroon princess, who has gotten everything for free her whole fucking life! You and Elias! Like spoiled brats! You donā€™t understand what it means to fight for something!
In 2x10, Jack decides to report Ludde for assault but he doesn't follow through on destroying this family that he hates. If there's anything Jack seems to despise above all, it should be the Kroon family, right? So why did he fight back with Ludde but not the Kroon family?
I expected Jack to leak all the Kroon secrets at the beginning of season 3, but Felicia seems strangely calm at the funeral which I'm assuming only takes place two weeks or so after Ola's passing in the season 2 finale.
Then, a whole year passes with no indication that Jack is ever going to leak anything. As season 3 was airing, I commented on how strange this felt in an ask I received:
One of my main questions about the time jump is the whole thing with Jack saying he was going to ruin Feliciaā€™s and the Kroon familyā€™s reputation in the press. It seemed like nothing really came of that? Iā€™m pretty sure that detail hasnā€™t been abandoned entirely and that Jack will come back (weā€™ve already seen a glimpse of him in the third episode), but it feels strange that Jack threatened to leak all her secrets and then just never did. I got the impression that Jack was a person who, when having his pride wounded, would do pretty much anything to get back at the person who insulted him. And yet thereā€™s no mention of where Jack has been during that time or what heā€™s been doing. I feel like I would be pretty paranoid about this if I was Felicia, but we donā€™t see this haunting her until episode 3 when she sees a flash of Jack before realizing it was just some random guy. It seems strange that Felicia was relatively at ease during the funeral (which I assume took place not long after Jack first threatened her) and after the time jump. We donā€™t really know whatā€™s been going on during that year, but Felicia seems to be fine and like she hasnā€™t had any thoughts of Jack at all. Maybe she assumed that his threats were empty and that he wouldnā€™t actually leak anything to the press, which is reasonable but at the same time I donā€™t understand why Jack has yet to do anything after a year. He was really pissed off in the season 2 finale, after all.
Going to repeat one of the things I wrote here because it deserves to be mentioned twice, and this point is one of my biggest issues.
I got the impression that Jack was a person who, when having his pride wounded, would do pretty much anything to get back at the person who insulted him.
I feel like this was kind of a plot hole that wasn't explained. Jack is ruthless and doesn't hold back at all when his true colors come out. He has no problem talking about the sexual relationship he had with Felicia in front of her father. Jack is just that horrible.
So what prevented him from ruining the Kroon family's lives earlier, when it seems to be the thing he's wanted for years?
Michael's predictable predicament
Michael first appears at the end of 3x04, where he calls Amie up to tell her he's her father.
Man: Hey! Sorry for calling so late. Is it Amie? Amie CondĆ©? Amie: Yeah. Man: I saw you on TV the other day. Iā€™m Michael CondĆ©. Iā€™m your father.
In the next episode, we get a voice-over of the continued conversation between him and Amie.
Michael: [...] I understand if itā€™s shocking. Iā€™m in Oskarshamn for work for a few weeks andā€” Could we meet up someday?
So, it's clear what the writers are going for here. It's the estranged father who returns into the child's life when they've become successful. We're made to believe it's a Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You trope when Michael meets up with Amie and tells her why he left.
Michael: So Petra, sheā€” Has she said anything about me? Amie: Wellā€¦ That you moved from Sweden before I was bornā€¦ That youā€™re working as a lawyer. That you didnā€™t want to see me. Michael: I wasā€¦ I was young when we met. Your mom and I. And everything went really fast. I was in love, but she had feelings for somebody else. And when she found out that sheā€” That she was expecting you, thenā€¦ She didnā€™t want me there. She said I wasnā€™t father material. To some degree she mightā€™ve been right, butā€¦ I wasnā€™t much older than you are now. I had just gotten into a law school in Berlin. When I finally came back to Sweden, thenā€¦ She didnā€™t let me see you. I had already lost you by then, but I want you to know that Iā€” Iā€™ve thought of you. And about a week ago, Iā€¦ Iā€™m seeing you. On TV. There you are. With my last name. Iā€™m so proud.
However, it's pretty easy to identify the holes in Michael's story. To be honest this whole storyline was predictable from the very start. Before Michael even came into the story, I made this post which pretty much summed up Michael's whole character when we didn't even know he existed yet (this was when 3x03 was the latest episode that had aired).
I donā€™t think weā€™ve heard any mention of Amieā€™s dad in the whole series except for 3x02 when Amie was being interviewed and was asked about the CondĆ© name where she said that while Samuelsson was from her motherā€™s side, and CondĆ© was from ā€œthe other sideā€. I found her word choice a little interesting. I donā€™t think Amieā€™s dad has passedā€”but rather that heā€™s alive and just chosen to not be a part of her life, which is why Petra seemed to be a little offended when asking Amie why she didnā€™t want her last name anymore. This might also be why Amie said ā€œthe other sideā€ rather than ā€œmy dadā€™s sideā€ because they have an estranged relationship. [...] Iā€™m not really sure if theyā€™ll do anything with Amieā€™s dad (maybe theyā€™ll go for that trope where the parent who previously abandoned their child returns after the child has accomplished something big/something major happened and the parent wants something from them for personal gain?).
When we actually get to meet Michael and hear his explanation of why he left, I wrote this post pointing out some of the holes in this storyline.
Michael meeting Amie only after sheā€™s become famous is a little suspicious, but itā€™s understandable if he previously thought she didnā€™t want to meet him and then sees her with his last name on national television. Obviously he would contact her after that. I feel like there were some question marks with Michaelā€™s whole story though, and the fact that his work just conveniently happened to send him to Oskarshamn after heā€™d just seen Amie on TV. Maybe Iā€™m missing something here, but how did he know Amie had gone back to Oskarshamn if he saw her living as a pop star in Stockholm? Was this information about Amie quitting the tour and going back to her hometown even online? If Elias (who actually witnessed Amie saying she was done and quitting) seemed taken aback when he saw Amie in Oskarshamn, then how did Michael know?
I do think Michael will return for season 4 though, so hopefully this storyline will be straightened out a little. We don't really know what Michael has been up for the past few years and if he has a family of his own. Maybe he'll contact Amie again to tell her she has some younger half-siblings?
They ended on sour terms, but if Michael does have his own family it's something Amie deserves to know and she can decide whatever she wants to do. I'd also like to see a Michael/Petra reunion, but I'm getting a little ahead of myself.
This storyline wasn't bad, and I do appreciate we got to find out what the situation with Amie's dad was. I also liked how I was able to sympathize with Michael. He's not entirely awful, even if he did put a lot of blame on Petra. It's one of those situations where you don't really know what it's like to be in Michael's position unless you've experienced it, and it's very realistic.
Plot holes
Some of the plot holes of season 3 that I've already mentioned are how Jack waited a whole year before leaking the Kroon family's secrets and how Michael conveniently knew Amie was in Oskarshamn when nobody seemed to know she was coming except her mom.
I actually don't mind that it was never explained how Michael got Amie's phone number either, because that's usually pretty easy to find with a Google search. Things like addresses, economic status, and even your criminal history are easily accessible in Sweden when googling someone's name. So finding someone's phone number is probably fairly easy as well.
On the other hand, one of the most glaring plot holes appeared in 3x08. In this episode entitled Lost, the Kroon family is frantically searching for Felicia who has gone missing. Leila and Elias knock on Petra's door to see if Amie is there and might know something about Felicia's whereabouts. Petra tells them Amie isn't there and they leave.
Someone left me an anonymous ask which I answered in this post, pointing out how it was strange that Elias didn't just call Amie to ask her when she wasn't at home. We know Elias has her number because they've been talking on the phone and texting each other several times before in the season.
In 3x08, when Elias and his mom go to Amie's house and ask Petra if Amie has seen or spoken to Felicia or whether she's home, I couldn't help but wonder, uh Elias why not just call Amie and ask her if she has seen or spoken to Felicia? [...] if Elias had called her and she heard how frightened him and his family were and police being involved she would have told him and then there would be no point in the 3x09 episode really.
This is a very strong point. You could argue that maybe Elias just didn't think of that but if they went out of their way to visit Amie's house only to not find her there, it would seem like calling her instead would just be a logical next step in the situation? Here's what I wrote in response to this ask.
This is an issue I had with 3x08 and 3x09 as well. I had a hard time actually enjoying the moment between Felicia, Klara, and Amie knowing that her family was getting increasingly worried for her and even thought for a short moment that Felicia was lying dead at the bottom of the ocean. All that couldā€™ve been avoided. To add, it didnā€™t make a lot of sense to me that when Klara finally decided to call someone she called Amie instead of Elias. An ex-friend of Feliciaā€™s instead of her brother who couldā€™ve helped a lot more. What was Amie supposed to do when she showed up at the hotel, exactly? I know there was the thing with Klara only knowing Amieā€™s number off the top of her head, but there is no reason why she couldnā€™t have gone down to the reception while Felicia was sleeping and asked to use a computer just to get a quick message to Elias. Like, ā€œhey, Felicia attempted something bad but sheā€™s safe with me, weā€™re at this hotel in this room but she didnā€™t want me to call anybody, I donā€™t know what to doā€. That wouldā€™ve been so much better than keeping quiet about the situation for nearly 24 hours. I know that Klara probably has trauma from leaving her dad at the hospital after his suicide attempt and that she probably didnā€™t want to go against Feliciaā€™s wishes. I understand the first part 100%. But Felicia was in a very bad place emotionally and was thinking that her whole family hated her when that wasnā€™t the case. I feel like in a situation like that you kind of have to be the bad guy just to ensure the family that Felicia was safe. Even if everything turned out alright in the end, it couldā€™ve gone so much worse if Felicia had wanted to be kept hidden for longer. [...] Elias calling Amie wouldā€™ve been an easy solution to this whole debacle but we wouldā€™ve lost the drama. Itā€™s still somewhat of a plot hole though, like you said.
I understand it was done this way for dramatic effect, but that doesn't really patch up the plot hole.
I also found it strange how many people turned on Felicia after Jack ruined her reputation in the press. I talked about this in an ask I received.
I donā€™t understand why the public turned on Felicia so harshly. And Leila too, for that matter. The way Jack told the story about how these two women had things done to them should indicate that theyā€™re not the ones to be blamed. If I read this article and found out an 18-year-old girl got pregnant by a ā€œviolent criminalā€ who forced her to abort and then abused her I would not be angry with the girl. I would be angry that she was physically abused and also outed on her sexuality for being bi. If I read this article and found out Leila had been cheated on by her husband repeatedly with her best friends, I wouldnā€™t be angry at her. I would not agree with the decision to turn to alcohol (same as Felicia turning to drugs), but I wouldnā€™t blame them. And I feel like a lot of people shouldā€™ve been on Leilaā€™s side after finding out the reason why they divorced. I donā€™t understand why people are saying theyā€™re disappointed in Felicia and calling her fake when sheā€™s been through so much trauma in her life. I feel like if this actually happened in real life, all the blame would be shifted to the men because theyā€™re the ones whoā€”in this storyā€”are painted as the bad guys (with the exception of Jack, considering he was anonymous).
I got another anonymous ask sent in after this, pointing out how the anger directed towards Felicia was considerably more about her drug use rather than the abuse she endured. Here was my response to that:
[...] the drug use shouldā€™ve been understandable considering the stuff Felicia had been through was also written in that article. I donā€™t know. I can understand people unfollowing her if they didnā€™t want their young children to be exposed to all the controversy, but itā€™s still strange that everything Felicia received was hate messages. Did everybody just skip over the part where the anonymous source stated that Felicia was violently forced to have an abortion by an ex-criminal and probably did so out of fear for her life? Yes, we know this is fake, but why didnā€™t anybody seem to mention this? [...] they seem to have written this storyline with the idea in mind that the public was against the whole Kroon family. Felicia got comments such as ā€œSo fucking disappointed in you and your familyā€, ā€œWhat a nasty fucking familyā€, ā€œYou and your family are so fucking disgustingā€. So I think Leila received plenty of hate for drinking instead of divorcing her husband sooner and basically turning a blind eye to all the problems her family went through. Thatā€™s what Jack told the press, at least. The anger seemed to be directed towards every member of the Kroon family and that didnā€™t make a lot of sense to me.
Again, this is something the writers did to dramatize the situation and they kind of forgot to consider that what Jack actually told the journalist wasn't as incriminating for Felicia and Leila as it were for Mats and Elias.
The magic of season 3
What season 3 really excelled in, to me, was delving into some more serious topics as well as showing the gradual development of Amie and Elias' relationship. Amie and Elias are the prime example of how a slow burn is so much better than having a couple get together too fast, like Felicia and Ludde did back in season 1.
While season 3 was still airing, I wrote a post dedicated to questions I had received about Elias and Amie. Here's one of the things I said about them:
I think Eliasā€™ interest in her really started to grow after he saw how caring Amie was to Felicia, and later on connecting with her on how they both ended up back in Oskarshamn after following their dreams which didnā€™t exactly turn out the way they expected. Yes, Elias has always sort of been watching and admiring Amie from afar, but that interest didnā€™t start growing until he actually got to know her. The experiences they had in the US and Stockholm, respectively, probably changed their mindsets and in my opinion it makes so much more sense for them to get together now than it wouldā€™ve in season 1 or season 2.
I still believe that Elias and Amie are the best-written couple of the whole show (at least so far), because they just make sense. We'll see what season 4 has in store for them because we have yet to actually see them in a romantic relationship, but I feel like their personalities and characters just fit together really well.
Another thing I really appreciated was the depiction of Felicia and Ludde's declining relationship. Things like that happen so easily, and I liked how we see Felicia do this huge gesture of planning a picnic for Ludde in 3x04 but there were still underlying problems between them. It's like that in real life tooā€”no matter how big of a romantic gesture you make, communication will always be the number one priority in any relationship and that's where Felicia and Ludde fall short.
The obvious disconnect between them when it comes to money is also important. It's been like this from the beginning, but season 3 gave us an actual conversation about it.
Felicia: Please, I canā€™t talk about this. Seriously. It was stupid of me to bring this up from the beginning. Fuck, I get such anxiety talking about the futureā€” Ludde: You get anxiety? Iā€™m the one walking around with no money in my account. Mom and dad had to get a loan to pay off mine and Andreasā€™ fines. Iā€™m playing on a shitty old synth, and living off you like some leech. Thatā€™s anxiety. Felicia: Everything isnā€™t about money. Ludde: Says the one who has money. Felicia: Move out then, if itā€™s so fucking hard to feel like a leech.
This felt very realistic. Of course a person like Felicia wouldn't think money is everything when she's never experienced financial issues. She's able to move out into her own one-bedroom apartment as soon as she's turned 18, it seems, and doesn't worry at all about the cost of furnishing and decorating it. She didn't even pay for it herself, because Mats mentions he's the one on the mortgage loan. It seems like Felicia has never had an actual job either, and that's starting to worry her because she has no idea what she should be doing.
Felicia: [...] I donā€™t know what Iā€™ll be or what Iā€™ll do in the future. I donā€™t know that. Ludde: Youā€™re still an influencerā€” Felicia: Donā€™t say Iā€™m an influencer, please. Do you think I want to be that my whole life? Itā€™s not even a career. I'mā€” Iā€™m graduating next year, and Iā€¦ My grades suck, andā€” I have no plan. I only have you. Not like thatā€”I have you. Thatā€™s what I have. I want to be here, in Oskarshamn. I donā€™t want to go to the US and chase some dream and be a hockey wife. Thatā€™s not a life. Sometimes I wish neither of us had a plan, just us together here.
Felicia's character finally offers something interesting here, which I've waited for since season 1. She's not just a party girl anymore who has issues with drugs. She's a privileged teenager who is co-dependent on the guys she meets and who has anxiety about the future, to the point where she wishes she could stay in Oskarshamn in her little apartment forever stuck in limbo.
She has to face a harsh reality when Ludde decides to break up with her, and later on when her name is slandered in the press and people all over the country are sending her hate messages. Her own family is furious with her and Felicia has nobody. She's pushed away a lot of people and her mental state is just crumbling in front of our eyes.
It's a strong storyline and actually very well executed. Almost everything gets taken away from her, and at the end of 3x07 you can almost feel what Felicia is feeling. We've been with her through this whole journey, almost, and we understand why she feels like suicide is the only answer.
It's tough to watch that final scene of 3x07. It's greatly amplified by Alva Bratt's superb acting, but the writing of the journey there is also amazing. It's very difficult to write a sensitive storyline like this.
Overall, I don't have a lot of critique towards season 3. I loved most of the episodes. I elaborated on this further in a separate post:
[Episodes 3x04 and 3x05] showcased what Eagles should be all about so well, which is relationships plus the struggles you go through as a teenager in a small town, and then of course hockey. The hockey game episodes are really good, even if I donā€™t think 3x05 topped 2x05 (the game where Ludde got tackled and knocked out). I loved the contrast in Date night of the budding relationship between Elias and Amie and then that fight between Felicia and Ludde on the cliff. [...] It was interesting to see how this sweet gesture from Felicia turned into a fight between the two of them. I thought that was very realistic, because no matter how big of a gesture Felicia made to apologize there were still underlying problems that they needed to talk about. I also loved the ā€œnon-dateā€ between Elias and Amie in this episode. It was cute to see them goofing off before the movie started and then talking about it on the way home. I liked how Elias could connect to her on how they had both returned to Oskarshamn. The recent episodes that dropped last week (3x08 and 3x09) were very strong and discussed some important subject matters [...] They were dark, but not necessarily bad because they needed to happen. However, I have to say that I prefer Eagles when itā€™s about hockey and teenage relationships. 3x04 and 3x05 made me kind of nostalgic for season 1 and I liked the vibe they both had.
Eagles season 3 is in my opinion the best season of the show so far, and we haven't seen any signs suggesting that there is any reason for season 4 to not be even better.

Season 4: Hopes and wishes
Considering how each season has been increasing in quality bit by bit, I have pretty high hopes for the writing in season 4. I'm excited to see how the transition from teenager to young adult will be portrayed in the main characters, and what their future will hold for them after they've graduated.
My main questions are if Felicia and Ludde will find their way back to each other or if they'll remain broken up (that would be realistic as well), if Klara will reconcile with her mom, what's in store for Elias's hockey career, and if Amie will leave her label and maybe opt for something more independent.
I also want to see how Felicia deals with the new home she's checked in to, and if Ludde will in fact go to the school now that it seems Andreas will be getting into trouble again.
Amie and Klara are kind of wild cards here, because it somewhat feels like they've already reached their happy endings. Amie is famous and successful in her pop music career, and Klara has found her place as a businesswoman following in her father's footsteps. Maybe these developments should've come in season 4 instead of rushing them.
Nonetheless, I have faith in the writers. The writing suffered a little in seasons 1 and 2 but it has gotten better. Most of the things I pointed out about season 3 were just small details in an otherwise stellar season.
In conclusion...
This post was critical, but I tend to be critical of every show I watch. Eagles is still a very special show for me and having grown up in a Swedish small town myself I'm very fond of the show and its characters.
So huge thanks to the creator, Stefan H. LindƩn, for making this show a reality and also to the director Carl-Petter Montell for contributing to the writing in season 3. And of course the writers of the show which include Michaela Hamilton, Fanny Ekstrand, and Anton Nyberg (plus Amanda Adolfsson who helped write 1x02 and 1x05 and Simon EkbƤck Nordstrƶm who is credited for helping with the hockey scenes in 3x05).
I hope you guys enjoyed this long, long post and major kudos to you if you read this far!
