Anyway, Trevor Henderson (of Slimeyswampghost fame) is currently producing a fiction podcast called Mayfair Watchers Society based on his horror artwork. And so far I like it a lot- it’s scratching two major itches for me;

It’s got a significantly more grounded approach to living in a Fucked Up Little Town (TM) where Things Just Happen Sometimes than Welcome to Night Vale; Characters in the town take a measured and reasonable approach to the fact they live in a town where Stuff (TM) happens sometimes and talk openly about it when it’s becoming relevant to the situation at hand, without becoming complete cartoons about it. A very “Ah, fuck, not this again- okay, does anyone remember how they handled this last time?” approach to it, which is very much how you’d translate the overall Vibe of Henderson’s works into a non-visual format. One of my favorite episodes so far is a Town Hall Meeting in which complaints about poachers slowly segue into the reveal that there’s some kind of bone-monster roaming about in the woods harvesting shed antlers to amalgamate into itself, and the initial theory that it’s some kind of scooby-doo style hoax by human poachers gets openly shouted and argued down as the unsubstantiated crank position that doesn’t pass Occam's razor despite the slight circumstantial evidence in it’s favor. And I was nodding along!

There’s a significantly greater spread of spookum intent. One thing that started to grate on my about The Magnus Archives, even before season 5, is that the universally hostile nature of the setting’s supernatural phenomena mildly damaged the sense of stakes; you already know what the freak of the week wants before you even know what the freak in question actually is, and then it’s just a waiting game to see how this one tries to kill everybody. So far Mayfair has had a decent spread between creatures that are actively malevolent, creatures that are primarily benign but inconvenient, and creatures that are, say, genuinely trying to help with a bullying problem but with no understanding of proportionality. Which is, again, basically the thematic throughline of Henderson’s art; a lot of his creatures are fundamentally of ambiguous intent. Sometimes a weird guy in an abandoned warehouse is just chilling, or exploring itself, and you’re the belligerent. Other times it’s an ambush predator with human mimicry. No way to tell!

Monsters 1001 ...or uh. as the header says, Mosters 1001, is a multimedia youtube channel focusing on various web horror topics and characters, with a LOT of trevor henderson works. especially those of the pregnant variety!

this channel achieves new feats of incomprehensible content, even HARDER to follow than Troom Troom if you can believe it! let's dive right on in

Monsters 1001 is bizarre. i'm just gonna say, this is an exceptionally bizarre one. Pop Cat Roblox levels of completely inane slapped togethewr content.

just gonna throw it out there: i don't think these are canon to trevor henderson's universe of creatures

when i call Monsters 1001 a multimedia channel, i more mean "they edit in everything over a green screen or other actual irl background". these models are animated poorly over actual backgrounds or drawn backgrounds and i really, really do not like the way they move. it makes me uncomfortable.

i do not think this channel is produced by people who speak english. the frequent typos are one thing, but this is clearly aimed towards children and the sound effects often contain swear words? i'm watching this and they just spliced in peter griffin saying "oh my god, who the hell cares" with the last word chopped off

this channel is viscerally unpleasant to watch. the sound mixing, the fact i think the plot of this video is that the babies in the wombs of the other sirenheads are jealous that golden sirenhead baby gets good food to eat so they go into golden sirenhead's womb to beat him up for his food, the animation of the characters, it is fully wholly an uncomfortable experience.

what do you mean nani. you're an unborn golden sirenhead baby. you shouldn't know any words, let alone japanese words. this channel is NOT japanese in production, i've seen a sign in the background of irl shots and i don't know what language it was in, but it wasn't japanese

Yo-yo (also known as Cartoon girl) is CANONICALLY a child. In her backstory and everything it states that she is a child. In my opinion Yoyo X C.C is not only disgusting, but just doesn’t make sense because CANONICALLY almost all of the cryptids in the Trevor Henderson universe either are scared of C.C, or just don’t bother him.

Shipping characters with C.C is alright in my opinion, but just…don’t make it a child.

mmmmmmmm I dont want to be a killjoy and I absolutely get the desire to make scary things into something easier to swallow, but seeing doctor nowhere's repeated exasperation with all the unoriginal thirst comments they inevitably get flooded with (alternated with the usual "what's wrong with this creator?!" or "kill it with fire!!") makes me more disheartened than anything

but I do agree that it's an interesting premise, the Boiled One in particular I think because it doesn't just terrorise people, but does so with this air of "benevolence"

Cthulhu Mythos and Esoterrorists

So there is this ttrpg called Fear Itself and Esoterrorist right? Written by Robin D. Law who created the gumshoe system for Trail of Cthulhu and Fall of Delta Green, great games and great system.

In the universe of Fear Itself and Esoterrorists, since they are a shared universe lets call in the Outer Dark mythos. The reason for that is because there is this supernatural force called the Outer Dark. It is the veil between conventional mundane reality where things like physical and material laws exist and the otherside being looser realities, the possibility of having supernatural insight and abilities. The only way for this to be achived is by loosing this veil or barrier, and to do this you must create or cater around belief or consensus reality. Here is where the esoterrorists come into play, they want powers beyond scope and are willing to do anything to obtain it. They believe that strong emotions like fear and superstition/paranoid are good conduits to this Outer Dark and so they promote conspiracy theories and hoaxs to create insight into this reality. The downside to this is that it allows ODEs or Outer Dark Entities to seap through and take shape into various forms. Much like the Fears or Entities from the Magnus archive, they take shape of common or unconscious fears and anxieties. These fears are basically violent incursion on reality and deeply enjoy pain and suffering, they feed on fear and will do anything to prolong it. So naturally these Esoterrorists usually end up worshipping these fears in a cult like structure to ensure they can achive there desired goal as long as they ODE gets what it wants.

In the Esoterrorists game and universe the player characters are a group know as the OV or the Ordo Veritatis (Order of Truth?) these are investigators and agents who actively fight against esoterrorists and contain or bind ODEs, to do that they must demystify the being, find or study its weaknesses, or simply put it down the old fashion way with various ballistic options.

What does this have to do with the Cthulhu Myhtos? Well the Cthulhu mythos is popular for many reasons, one of those being the tabletop roleplaying community and its various games on the subject, Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green being prominent examples. What I like so much about Modern Cthulhu stories and games is how there recontextualize the mythos to modern beliefs and various folklores and urban mythologies that exist either obscure or common. Lovecraft I think is a better writer then people give him credit for because he created characters and worlds where egyptologists and genealogists are common enough for specific eldritch abominations to exist based on there specific fears and anxieties.

Of course Nyarlathotep was once a vessel for a forbidden and cursed pharaoh, in an western egyptologist brain that has been infected by a alien memetic virus that would only make sense.

Of course a sea captain from the turn of the century and from an imperial core nation that has no knowledge or sense of Micronesian folklore or beliefs would think of local spirits and deities as monsterous sea beasts. When you see a leviathan during your time in the merchant navy and your mind is so wretched from war you imagine a civilization of fish people that are waiting and hunger for the surface dwellers to tire themselves from endless conquest.

These characters see horrors that can not be appropriately translated and so the closest analog they have is horrific monsters and that allows the veil to weaken and this invites demons into there homes. This is where I think the Outer Dark and the Cthulhu Mythos meets.

I would be interested to see how modern internet creepypastas and monster are shaped by modern fears and anxieties. In a unrelated tangent I have always seen Trevor Hendersons Siren Head as being a manifestation of alienation that is common in modernity, a creature or being of which you can not tell apart from light poles, electrical wires, or cell towers. Something that stalks you and studies your behavior, you are both alone and hunted in your own neighborhood or city scape. Maybe something I could use for a Esoterrorists game or Fear Itself?

Formerly a human, Tadpole is a "demon" that feeds on nightmares. She's just very very big and honestly turned out kind of motherly, since it replaces nightmares with good dreams by nature and will sing to people having nightmares if it can't reach them.

Bandage (any, i usually default to it/its)

Bandage is another "demon" but instead of coming from a human, Bandage was originally a fern. It doesn't have a single true form, but the one constant between its forms are bandages wrapped around its face, only revealing one eye if any

Its resting form is closest to a true form and its a potted fern and it also has a humanoid "commimunication" form it plays with sometimes (both pictured)

Maybe eventually there'll be more than DnD in here, this is more just TTRPG characters

My sweet Teifling Warlock (very original i know) Nowhere. He's half elven, hence his ears, and completely swagless. He is dying more than half of the time because his pact makes him violently ill. He originally wanted to be a wizard like his adoptive lesbian moms but that didn't work out and he got a little desperate.

In specific circumstances he's Asmodeus himself's accident son and also stole Strahd von Zarovich's husband with his loser rizz

He grew up there with barely restrained talent in ice magic but he got an Elsa complex about it because Marleybone is dumb and hates magic. He's better now. Still British but he's cool and very sunshiney

My Conjurer. Current main at level 36. No idea what I'm gonna do when I hit Zafaria on him.

He's a resident of Wizard City, born and raised, and grew up on Cyclops Lane. He has three younger sisters, Kestrel, Holly and Angela. He loves writing fiction and dreams of one day hopes to write a story so legendary that there come to be Myth spells based around it. As you can imagine, he is rather pretentious about it, but he LOOOVES to help his juniors when they're too afraid to ask Professor Drake. Complete motherhen. He works part time at the Wizard City Library, which really expedites his tutoring process since he knows exactly where everything is. Every bossfight with him consists of him cussing the boss out and calling them a jackass and moron in various ways until he finds the right words to make them cry. His favorite evokation.

For my artistic purposes, Joshua is the same age as Zachary and in the same grade. In game though, I have him at about 17 and in Mooshu.

It so happens this producer is one of my own, dare I say our own--a bona fide and quality-controlled member of the Don’t Starve fandom. Now, I know I am speaking from personal bias when I say that the DS fanbase is an overwhelmingly warm and talented community, but I as sure do not speak from personal bias when saying that as a whole, we god damn adore some quality uncanny horror. We are given to gas lights and goblins, be they in the literal, figurative, or far-flung future alternate universe form, and we want to see them thrive.

That’s why I am asking you, here, today, to open up your hearts (and if applicable, your wallets) and show a little consideration for the one of us that could be any, and rises to this honorable goal with heart in hands, breathless with anticipation and clutched viciously by the shadows of anxiety as numbers are crunched and dreams are made. I believe us to be capable of not just propping enough pre-orders to sell, but in making Bleed Error something we will be proud to have even the slightest hand in. I believe us to be the artists, the writers, the magic bean buyers who can propel something great to greatness. We can set that on its trajectory, and we can do it one reblog at a time.

And, anyway, you know...some of you guys like me too, and I’m not in it or anything, but...Zampano was good to me during what you know have been some difficult months, and that kind of character is, I think, worth rewarding.

Demons, yes! That’s what imps are: basically any demon, devil, or generic monster, but tiny! Even a couple of pop culture critters in there, there’s probably a very small gillman or robot monster running around there somewhere.

Just saying it will do! It’s based on those old werewolf stories where calling out the person’s name will change them back into a human/cure them, and a lot of the time it was by accident.

(My favorite is the one where they slam the door on the wolf’s tail and then say his name, and the dude ends up with a wolf tail for the rest of his life.)

Since clothing fills into the body type of the intended wearer, they would indeed be able to control all arms/legs in buggieman clothes.

Size restrictions is one of these things I wanna try to be vague about: I personally have been imagining them sticking to hiding in things no smaller than, um. Maybe imp sized, but really, whatever. It’s a cartoon eyeball critter!

They can move around just fine in darkness without being off screen, yeah!

as for making monsters my inspo is Kind Of Weird? i mean i look at a lotta horror art for sure (my favourite artist atm is Trevor Henderson aka slimyswampghost on most medias, u may know him as That Guy Who Made Sirenhead but he has a lot of other fantastic art as well!), but since i dont wanna feel like im rippin other people off i actually Dont often use that as inspo! aaaand heres where its gonna get a bit weird

aside from the times i pluck a creature from my nightmares (and boy, do i have a lotta material to work with there), i usually either look into folklore (bein mindful of closed cultures like, i believe most Native American monsters are off-limits for non-Natives to write; im white as hell so i try to stick to british/irish/more recent american shit) or... i look to this one game i played Obsessively when i was in elementary/middle school: Spore (which you can find on Steam i think or their hilariously hasn't-been-updated-in-a-WHILE website). I literally played it so much I can just kind of... imagine the whole creature-creator process. I think it’s a curse. I think Todd Howard cursed me for the crime of Having No Friends.

Now, if you dont wanna download a probably-poorly-aged EA game from 2007 (i dont even know if it’d run anymore if you Just Now bought it, i remember the security measures that thing had damn near broke the game before i could even play it, thanks EA) and play through the first two stages (theyre Long) to unlock the creature creator and all the Bits for it, you can either watch people play that shit on YouTube (Monster Factory is a favourite of mine, they did I Think a 3-video run of Spore) or, 

You can also do somethin that I once did as an assignment for Character Design class: go to a random animal generator, let it spit out 2-3 animals (or as many as you like, i guess, but i find 2-3 to be a Manageable number) and mash those motherfuckers together! Hell, you can even start to mix in stuff like objects/minerals/whatever the fuck too. Make something that’s a dog, hammerhead shark, and the concept of entropy. Go nuts! Here’s an example, some shit I made for that class (which mayyyyyy appear in Auckland...... perhaps. if i feel like it) :

They can range from “cute” to “nightmarish” as you please! Fun fact, that spider/shark/scorpion is meant to be the size of a house. I honestly come up with a lot of messed up shit by just asking myself "What's the worst thing I can think of right now?" and then I just Go For It with whatever my brain's thrown at me. I did that with Nightmare E.T. and the fucked-up ostriches. 'Scary' is often a sort of personal thing for people, like phobias and shit, you know? Lookin inward can be pretty helpful there. Not like you have to make something of your phobias, just maybe run with something that disturbs you a little. If you press yourself for why it bothers you sometimes you can find something deeper and maybe more universal in it. I'm not talking about unearthing trauma or anything tho that likely Wouldn't Be Healthy just like... if you think spiders are creepy, ask yourself Why: is it the eyes? the legs? the venom? the way they just kinda creep up on you, like, you dont notice em til you see them? etc.

As for the monsters in Auckland while most of them aren’t gonna be references (maybe a few more in future chapters...) I will admit the “morning wood monster” is a reference to the Pokémon Trevenant; the "most fucked-up dog [Dave had] ever seen" was a creature from The Moomins just described as horribly as possible--I can't find it on the wiki anymore??? it was from the 2d animated one, though; the Shitsucker is a regular ol’ Wraith (following a specific mythos where they aren’t just Random Ghosts but beings that feed off negative emotional energy, I can't re-find which one I'm sorry lmao); and the haunted ship thing at the beginning is a vague reference to the Buzzfeed Unsolved episode on that big ass boat. Isn't directly tied to it (obviously, 'cause Buzzfeed Unsolved never has much Actual Ghost Activity, let alone one Throwin Shit At Em jhgfds), more just inspired by it.

Maybe when the thing is done, I’ll sort them all into one of three categories--references to stuff/folklore, things i had nightmares about, and things i just kind of thought up. Make a post on here about it, idk

wow! this was fuckin long. i hope at least some of that is helpful!! also im adding this here cause i just remembered some people use Spore to sculpt like?? beautiful monsters and shit?? like i Know i watched a “speedrun” of someone creating a beautiful ass dragon in it. there’s probably a whole community of people out there making epic and/or fucked up shit and you could watch them build it or just scroll through thumbnails for inspo, but i do feel like Building Stuff Yourself is best, cause it just kind of Feels Nice to make something yourself and go “hey man, look how fucked up this is ! scary, right?” and get that Success Feeling when the other guy recoils and goes "yeah man what the fuck though"
