Hi Maddie! Are you willing to talk a little about your PhD journey? All I know is you write a really big paper but I imagine it involves more than that
absolutely! the requirements of a phd will definitely range depending on both your field and subject of your research, but typically involve taking courses that allow you to gain general but high level knowledge of the area on the whole, passing some type of qualifying exam that shows you’re prepared to complete your dissertation, and then writing the dissertation itself, all in a process that can take between typically three years (this seems very short but is fairly common outside of the USA) to a decade. in my program people typically graduated in five or six years; i myself took six years to finish everything up
for my program i took classes in a wide variety of areas, most of which were not directly related to what i wrote about for my dissertation, but all of which were extremely beneficial in 1) learning in areas outside of what i do, 2) helping me feel more prepared when teaching those subjects as part of my TA duties, and 3) allowing me to develop deeper critical and theoretical knowledge that helped me with writing the dissertation itself. i was also really happy that i was able to take classes outside of the theatre department (in the music and literature departments; though the lit class i took was a film class lol), which made total sense given my research is so interdisciplinary. the biggest thing i learned about my research throughout my time is that i very much live in the performance studies world (vs. theatre or drama) which is helpful framing given i write and teach about such a wide range of performance and media forms. my dissertation was much more a performance studies/musicology/american studies project than a Theatre™️ project, but i had a committee that really encouraged me to think across multiple disciplines with my work (and i also got to teach both theatre and film classes, which is pretty cool)
i also really appreciate that my program also gave us so much experience teaching! i taught every single quarter and many summers during grad school, which (while exhausting) not only gave me a ton of practice to build up my own pedagogical approach but made my CV pretty competitive as an early career scholar when applying to jobs. i don’t think i would have gotten multiple tenure-track interviews while still finishing my dissertation had i not had so much teaching experience (as instructor of record!) on there. i also am really grateful that my department also really cares about encouraging phds’ practice within and beyond the department, so i was able to dramaturg and/or direct ten shows within my department on top of a ton of outside gigs at the major LORT houses in town (which was also a really big deal)
the actual dissertation writing process sucks. it’s exhausting and thankless and even if you have a really amazing committee (like i did <3) it is extremely stressful and i do not know ANYONE who has reported a smooth and easy dissertation writing process LOL; however i had really good people on my side (friends, family, colleagues in the department and in arts and humanities in general at school, my faculty, my coworkers at the record shop, etc.) who were so supportive and my biggest champions as i was taking on this massive project. it was a lot but in all honestly even though it took so long, it was not the most difficult academic work i’ve ever had to do (that badge of dishonor goes to the horrendous process of getting my international baccalaureate diploma, which was so awful it led me to go to hippie college with no grades no tests and no majors LMFAO). i am super proud of my dissertation—if anyone wants to read it i’d be happy to send the link!—and even though there are plenty of sections i’ll rework for when i submit it to academic presses for publication, i am really pleased with the work i did and i think that it provides new and (imho) exciting scholarship about topics that i find really meaningful (many of which i’ve loved since i was a kid)
all of this to say, if people have phd, grad school, research, or otherwise related questions or want to chat, please hit me up! always happy to talk about this stuff / offer my very humble advice about any stage of the process <3

you reblogged my post and said you were a funeral service worker right?
what does that entail? like what are you required to do and what education does it need?
Currently I’m an assistant— which requires nothing but a high school diploma and a good reference or two (you have to be a registered mortuary science student or provisional licensee to access any of the “back room” stuff like the embalming lab, though).
I am, however, studying to become a mortician, which requires two years of education, two six-month internships, and a board exam.
This is just for my state. Requirements vary wildly across the USA, and even more so in other countries.

overview Of IELTS #Egyaneknowledge
Tumblr media
Overview of IELTS # Egyaneknowledge The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a standardized test for non-native English speakers who want to study, work, or live in English-speaking countries. Recognized by over 10,000 institutions worldwide, IELTS is often a prerequisite for university admission, job opportunities, and immigration. This article covers everything you need to know about the IELTS exam, its structure, preparation tips, and how it can be your gateway to studying abroad.
What is IELTS?
IELTS is a test that assesses the English language skills of non-native speakers. It’s jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.
The exam is available in two formats:
1. Academic IELTS – Designed for those applying to universities or higher education institutions in English-speaking countries.
2. General Training IELTS – Intended for individuals planning to migrate to English-speaking countries or enroll in non-academic training programs.
Each version tests your ability to communicate in real-life situations and ensures you have the skills needed to succeed in an English-speaking environment.
Why Take the IELTS?
For students and professionals, IELTS is often a critical step in their journey to studying, working, or settling abroad.
Here are a few reasons why taking IELTS can open up new opportunities:
1. Global Recognition – Over 140 countries and 10,000 institutions accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency.
2. University Admission – Many universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand require IELTS scores for admission.
3. Visa and Immigration – Many countries require IELTS scores for immigration and visa processing.
4. Employment Opportunities – Multinational companies often require IELTS scores from candidates for international job roles.
Structure of the IELTS Exam
IELTS assesses four key language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Here’s a breakdown of each section:
1.Listening (30 minutes) : This section has four parts, each with ten questions, totaling 40 questions. You’ll hear recordings of native English speakers in a variety of contexts, from conversations to monologues, and answer questions based on what you hear.
2. Reading (60 minutes) : This section consists of three reading passages and a total of 40 questions. The passages range from descriptive and factual to analytical and critical, testing comprehension, main ideas, and details.
3. Writing (60 minutes): The writing test includes two tasks:
- Task 1 (150 words) for Academic IELTS: Describes data, charts, or diagrams.
- Task 2 (250 words): Essay writing that presents an argument or viewpoint. In General IELTS, Task 1 involves writing a letter, while Task 2 is a more general essay
4. Speaking (11–14 minutes): The speaking section is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, divided into three parts: an introduction, a short talk, and a discussion on abstract topics. The section evaluates your fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and coherence.
IELTS Scoring System
IELTS is scored on a scale of 0 to 9, with each skill receiving a band score. The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half-point.
Here’s a breakdown of the score levels:
- Band 9 – Expert User
- Band 7 – Good User
- Band 5 – Modest User
- Band 3 – Extremely Limited User
- Band 1 – Non-user
Each university or country may have a minimum score requirement for admission or immigration, typically between 6.0 and 7.5.
Tips for IELTS Preparation
1. Understand the Format – Familiarize yourself with the test format by reviewing sample questions and practicing past papers.
2. Develop Strong Vocabulary – A strong vocabulary is essential, especially for the Reading and Writing sections.
3. Practice Time Management – Each section has strict time limits, so practicing under timed conditions is essential.
4. Take Practice Tests – Practice tests can highlight areas that need improvement and help build confidence.
5. Seek Professional Guidance – If possible, consider enrolling in an IELTS preparation course or hiring a tutor for personalized feedback.
Test Dates and Registration
IELTS is available multiple times throughout the year in test centres across the globe. Registration is typically done through the official IELTS website or authorized centres.
To register:
1. Choose a test date and location that suits your schedule and apply early to secure a spot.
2. Pay the test fee (typically between $200–USD 250, but it varies by location).
3. Prepare the required documents for registration and bring them on the test day.
Studying Abroad with IELTS
With a good IELTS score, students can apply to universities in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Here are some of the top destinations:
- United Kingdom – Requires IELTS for student visas and is home to universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London.
- Australia – Most universities in Australia accept IELTS scores, and it’s a requirement for a student visa.
- Canada – Canadian universities accept IELTS, and it’s commonly required for study and work visas.
- United States – While TOEFL is popular, many U.S. universities accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency.
IELTS is more than just an English test; it’s a stepping stone to achieving your dream of studying abroad. By preparing strategically, understanding the test format, and practising regularly, you can achieve a high score and open the doors to numerous global opportunities. Whether you’re aiming to study at a prestigious university, start a career, or explore new cultures, IELTS is your pathway to an exciting future.

INDIGENOUS INTERSEX TRANS PERSON IN NEED OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
please don’t scroll!!! my name is rafael, i am an a:shiwi/zuni pueblo ndn. my partner and i are seeking about $400 to help pay off half of our electric bill so we can have access to necessary medical equipment and a/c as things warm up here in the coastal southeast usa
Tumblr media
we are aiming to qualify for duke energy’s payment program, but we need to reduce the total amount of our bill before we can qualify.
i had a major surgery ($1,600) to remove what we thought was one (but ended up being four) tumor(s) from my uterus earlier this year, and the next month my partner had to get an MRI ($700) and sleep study ($600) done as a routine eye exam found that he had intracranial hypertension. he was diagnosed with severe central sleep apnea with 104 instances of not breathing AN HOUR, and we have had to buy a bipap which has cost about $2,000 and requires electricity to run.
because my partner is and has been extremely chronically ill, i usually work to support us, but i am recovering from my own surgery, have no college degree, and have no experience in anything but labor-heavy positions. needless to say, we have almost nothing left to support ourselves.
where we are there is little/no community support, and we have exhausted all charitable options in paying rent ($1,500) this month.
please, please—we are desperate, we have almost no food left and can’t afford for our power to be cut. anything helps. please boost this.

Happy STS! Today I’m returning the back to school themed ask. Did Louisa always know what she wanted to pursue in the future, or did she struggle to choose a career? How do Keith and Zoe feel about her choice to study premed? (I’m thinking of how expensive schooling is in the USA😭, and we know the family doesn’t have TONS of extra money lying around.) And, finally, were there any other programs Louisa was tempted to enrol in instead? (Any part of her that secretly wished to be an English major? 😉)
Thanks for the ask, Kate, and happy STS!
Excellent question!
Despite having always loved reading and the written word, she was probably always more interested in a medical career, and there are many reasons for that. She was always an animal lover and also considered being a vet or a marine biologist when she was very young. And as we know, she enjoyed and did well in biology in high school (and even chemistry, before it became organic!). She does have a naturally caring and nurturing side (even though it doesn't always show), and in high school, she became a fan of several TV shows set in medical practices, which led her to think of medicine as a more "cool" career path (she was only 16, so we can forgive her for that).
But money ultimately was the deciding factor. She saw how the winds were blowing with her family and decided to concentrate on a career that would allow her to be financially stable and not dependent on either them or a husband. Her grades and exam scores were high enough to receive a full academic scholarship, so as long as she keeps her grades up, she doesn't have to worry about paying for her undergraduate degree (but obviously not if she fails a required course, which is part of the reason she was panicking so much -- without the scholarship, she'd be in danger of having to drop out altogether). And she's prepared to take out loans for med school, knowing the salary would be high enough that she'd be able to pay them back once she started working.
And of course, medicine is a field she thought would meet with more parental approval. When she was younger, Keith was definitely one of those parents who made it quite clear that business, law, or medicine were basically the only acceptable career options for his children -- mostly because, as we know, he didn't grow up rich himself and he was determined that his children wouldn't ever have to struggle. And to him, any career an English major would be qualified to do would count as "struggling." (It was Zoe's side of the family who were so-called "old money," and she certainly felt the same way, although she wasn't quite as adamant about it -- she was more of the "find a man to support you" mentality, which is even more distasteful to Lou!) Unfortunately, because of this, he really put the pressure on, and Ethan, who wasn't cut out for any of those fields, ended up getting the worst of it. Those feelings of inadequacy were part of the reason he developed the problems he did, and that in turn ended up being even more of a motivator for Lou, as the "last hope" for her family, to go into one of those prestigious fields and achieve what he couldn't.
If none of the above had been factors, yes, she might have given much more thought to studying English! All in all, she might well have enjoyed it more. It certainly would have been less stressful for her. But by the time it came to choose, she had already decided that medicine was the way. Then she started university, and the rest is history.😊

A Complete Guide to Student Visa Requirements for Indian Students
Tumblr media
One of the first steps in planning your study abroad journey is securing the right visa for the country where you will be studying. Visa requirements can vary significantly depending on the destination, type of program, and duration of stay. Navigating the visa application process might seem overwhelming, but with the right information and preparation, it can be a manageable part of your study abroad experience. In this blog, we'll break down the key things you need to know about visa requirements for international students.
1. Types of Visas for International Students
The first step is understanding the type of visa you will need. Depending on the country and program, you may need to apply for a specific student visa. The most common types of student visas include:
F-1 Visa (USA): This is the most common visa for international students planning to study in the United States. It applies to academic students enrolled in universities, colleges, and other educational institutions.
Tier 4 Visa (UK): The UK offers a Tier 4 student visa for students enrolled in full-time programs at a recognized educational institution.
Study Visa (Canada): For students who wish to study in Canada, the study visa is typically required if the course duration is more than six months.
Schengen Student Visa (EU): If you're studying in one of the Schengen Area countries, you may need a student visa valid for the specific country you're attending. Students often require a residence permit or long-stay visa for studies in Europe.
Subclass 500 (Australia): The Australian student visa allows students to study full-time in Australia for the duration of their academic program.
2. General Visa Requirements
Although the requirements for student visas vary by country, there are common documents and criteria that most countries share. Here's what you typically need:
Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in the foreign country.
Acceptance Letter: You will need an official offer or acceptance letter from the university or institution where you will be studying. This proves that you are enrolled in an approved academic program.
Proof of Financial Support: Most countries require you to show proof that you can financially support yourself while studying. This can include bank statements, scholarship offers, or financial affidavits.
Visa Application Form: You will need to fill out a student visa application form, which you can typically find on the embassy or consulate’s website for the country you're applying to.
Visa Fees: Many countries charge a visa processing fee. Be sure to check the exact amount and payment process.
3. Health and Medical Insurance Requirements
Many countries require international students to have health or medical insurance during their studies. Some countries, like Australia, include it as part of the visa requirements, while others may provide students with the option to buy local health insurance. Be sure to understand the health insurance requirements of your host country and the coverage options available to you.
4. Language Proficiency Requirements
If your study program is in a language other than your native tongue, you may be asked to demonstrate proficiency in that language. For instance:
English Proficiency: If you're studying in an English-speaking country, you may need to submit scores from exams like TOEFL or IELTS to prove your proficiency.
Local Language Proficiency: Some countries may also ask for proficiency in their native language, especially if your course will involve direct interaction with locals.
5. Additional Visa Considerations
Visa Interviews: Some countries may require a visa interview as part of the application process. During this interview, you may be asked questions about your academic background, travel plans, and intentions while studying abroad.
Work Rights: Many student visas allow international students to work part-time while studying. Be sure to check the rules regarding work rights and restrictions in your host country.
Duration and Extensions: Understand the duration of your student visa and how to extend it if necessary. Most student visas are granted for the length of your academic program, but some may allow extensions for internships or postgraduate work.
6. Visa Processing Time
Visa processing times can vary depending on the country and time of year. Some visas may take several weeks or even months to process. Therefore, it’s important to apply as early as possible to avoid delays. Be sure to check the visa processing times on the embassy’s website and apply at least a few months in advance of your planned travel date.
7. How to Apply for a Student Visa
Here’s a general step-by-step process for applying for a student visa:
Research the Requirements: Begin by researching the specific student visa requirements for the country you plan to study in.
Gather Documents: Collect all necessary documents, including your passport, acceptance letter, proof of financial support, and any required test scores.
Fill Out the Application: Complete the student visa application form, which is typically available online or through the embassy.
Submit Documents: Submit your application and supporting documents to the relevant embassy or consulate.
Attend Interview (if required): Schedule and attend a visa interview if requested by the embassy.
Wait for Approval: After submitting your application, wait for your visa to be processed. This can take a few weeks or months, so be patient.
Obtaining a student visa is an important step in your study abroad journey. Understanding the visa requirements for your destination and planning ahead can help you avoid last-minute stress. With the right documents and preparation, the process can be smooth. It's always a good idea to check the official embassy or consulate website for the latest information. A reliable study abroad consultancy can also guide you through each step, from gathering documents to completing the application. By securing your student visa early, you can focus on preparing for an amazing educational experience abroad.

12 Reasons to Choose Kazakhstan for Your MBBS in 2025
2025 is going to be the year of fulfilling dreams and achieving success. Everyone is excited and enthusiastic to fulfill what they desire as they are all set to enter 2025. Pursuing a medical degree is a dream for many students worldwide, and the journey often begins with selecting the right destination. Over the years, Kazakhstan has emerged as a sought-after location for aspiring doctors, offering a unique blend of high-quality education, affordability, and cultural diversity. If you’re considering studying MBBS abroad in 2025, Kazakhstan should be at the top of your list. Here’s why:
1. World-Class Medical Universities
Kazakhstan is home to several renowned medical universities that are recognized by prestigious organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Medical Commission (NMC), and other organizations.
2. Affordable Tuition Fees
One of the standout advantages of studying MBBS in Kazakhstan is the cost-effectiveness. Tuition fees in Kazakh universities are significantly lower than in countries like the USA, UK, or Australia. Additionally, the cost of living is reasonable. This makes Kazakhstan an ideal destination for students from middle-income families seeking quality education without financial strain.

Tumblr media
Choosing the right destination to study MBBS abroad is a pivotal decision for aspiring medical professionals. Among the many countries offering medical education, Kazakhstan has emerged as a preferred choice, especially for Indian students. With its affordable education, globally recognized universities, and conducive learning environment, Kazakhstan stands out as a promising option. In this article, we will explore the benefits to studying MBBS in Kazakhstan compared to other countries, providing insights that will help you make an informed decision.
1. Affordable Tuition Fees and Cost of Living
One of the most significant advantages of studying MBBS in Kazakhstan is its affordability. Compared to countries like the USA, UK, or even some European nations, the tuition fees for MBBS programs in Kazakhstan are significantly lower.
Tuition Fees: The annual tuition fees in Kazakhstan range from $3,000 to $5,000, making it an economical option for students seeking quality education without financial strain.
Cost of Living: The cost of living is also budget-friendly. Monthly expenses, including accommodation, food, and transportation, range from $150 to $300. This is much lower compared to countries like the USA or Australia.
For Indian students, this affordability is a major factor, as it allows them to pursue their dream of studying MBBS abroad without accumulating overwhelming debt.
2. High-Quality Medical Education
Kazakhstan’s medical universities are recognized for their robust curriculum and modern teaching methodologies. They adhere to international standards, ensuring students receive comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical training.
Recognized Universities: Many universities in Kazakhstan, such as Kazakh National Medical University and Semey Medical University, are recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), World Health Organization (WHO), and other global medical bodies.
English Medium Instruction:Most medical universities offer MBBS programs in English, which removes language hurdles for international students.
This quality of education positions Kazakhstan as a strong contender among destinations like Russia, China, and the Philippines for studying MBBS abroad.
3. Simplified Admission Process
Kazakhstan's admission process is easy and student-friendly. Unlike some countries that require complex entrance exams or interviews, admission to MBBS programs in Kazakhstan typically involves:
Meeting the eligibility criteria (50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in 12th grade).
Submitting NEET qualification scores (mandatory for Indian students).
Providing basic documentation such as academic certificates and a passport.
Moreover, study MBBS abroad consultants, like DoctorBano, can guide students through every step, from application to securing visas, ensuring a hassle-free experience.
4. Global Recognition of Medical Degrees
A significant advantage of studying MBBS in Kazakhstan is the global recognition of its medical degrees. Graduates of Kazakh medical universities are qualified for:
Appear for the FMGE/NExT exam in India to practice as licensed doctors.
Pursue postgraduate studies or practice medicine in countries like the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia after clearing the respective qualifying exams.
This recognition ensures that students investing in MBBS education in Kazakhstan are not restricted in their career options.
5. Advanced Infrastructure and Facilities
Kazakh medical universities are equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to support modern medical education.
Well-Equipped Laboratories: Universities offer advanced labs for anatomy, pathology, and microbiology, enabling hands-on learning.
Modern Hospitals: Students benefit from clinical exposure at affiliated hospitals with the latest medical equipment.
Digital Learning: Many universities have incorporated digital tools and simulation-based training to enhance learning outcomes.
In comparison, some countries may lack such advanced facilities or require students to pay significantly higher fees for similar resources.
6. Cultural Diversity and Student Support
Kazakhstan is known for its warm hospitality and cultural inclusivity. With thousands of international students from India, Pakistan, Nepal, and other countries, the cultural diversity creates a welcoming environment.
Indian Community: Indian students will find a strong community, with many universities celebrating Indian festivals and offering Indian food in cafeterias.
Student Support: Universities and study MBBS abroad consultants ensure that international students are supported in adapting to the new environment through orientation programs and counseling services.
This cultural adaptability makes Kazakhstan more appealing compared to some European or Western nations where cultural barriers might pose challenges.
7. No Donation or Hidden Costs
Unlike private medical colleges in India, where capitation fees or donations are common, Kazakh medical universities strictly follow a transparent fee structure. Students pay only the tuition fees, which are clearly outlined during the admission process.
This transparency attracts Indian students who prefer studying MBBS abroad in a system that prioritizes merit over financial capability.
8. Favorable Climate for Indian Students
Kazakhstan’s climate is diverse but manageable, with most cities experiencing pleasant summers and moderately cold winters.
For students accustomed to extreme weather conditions in India, adapting to Kazakhstan’s climate is relatively easy compared to countries with harsher climates like Russia or Canada.
9. Opportunities for Practical Training
Kazakhstan emphasizes practical training as an integral part of its MBBS programs.
Early Clinical Exposure: Students begin hospital visits and clinical rotations from the second year of their course.
Internship Opportunities: The internship program during the final year is recognized globally and provides hands-on experience in real-world medical settings.
This practical training ensures that graduates are job-ready and confident in their medical skills, a factor often lacking in medical programs in some other countries.
10. High FMGE Passing Rates
Indian students studying MBBS in Kazakhstan have shown commendable performance in the FMGE (soon to be replaced by NExT). Many universities have dedicated coaching for FMGE, ensuring students are well-prepared to clear this licensing exam upon returning to India.
FMGE Coaching: Universities collaborate with expert faculty to provide targeted coaching for Indian students, giving Kazakhstan an edge over other destinations for MBBS abroad.
11. No Entrance Exams Beyond NEET
Unlike countries like the USA (MCAT) or the UK (UKCAT), Kazakhstan does not require additional entrance exams for admission to MBBS programs. Indian students only need to qualify NEET, making the process simpler and more accessible.
12. Shorter Duration of Course
In Kazakhstan, the MBBS program normally lasts five years, as opposed to six years in Russia, Ukraine, or China. This shorter duration allows students to save both time and money, making Kazakhstan a more attractive option for studying MBBS abroad.
13. Easy Visa Process
Obtaining a student visa for Kazakhstan is relatively straightforward compared to many other countries.
Simplified Application: The visa process is hassle-free, requiring basic documents such as a passport, university admission letter, and medical certificates.
Fast Processing: Visa approvals for students are generally quicker than for countries with more stringent immigration policies.
This streamlined visa process ensures that students can focus on their academic preparations without unnecessary delays. Moreover, study MBBS abroad consultants like DoctorBano provide dedicated support to ensure students complete the visa process without any complications.
14. Strong Bilateral Relations Between India and Kazakhstan
The growing diplomatic and economic ties between India and Kazakhstan benefit Indian students pursuing MBBS there.
Educational Collaborations: Several universities in Kazakhstan collaborate with Indian medical institutions to enhance educational standards and facilitate student exchanges.
Indian Embassy Support: The Indian Embassy in Kazakhstan provides robust support to Indian students, offering assistance in times of need and organizing cultural events to make them feel at home.
These bilateral relations add an extra layer of security and comfort for Indian students, making Kazakhstan a more viable option compared to countries with limited ties to India.
