Hi Maddie! Are you willing to talk a little about your PhD journey? All I know is you write a really big paper but I imagine it involves more than that
absolutely! the requirements of a phd will definitely range depending on both your field and subject of your research, but typically involve taking courses that allow you to gain general but high level knowledge of the area on the whole, passing some type of qualifying exam that shows you’re prepared to complete your dissertation, and then writing the dissertation itself, all in a process that can take between typically three years (this seems very short but is fairly common outside of the USA) to a decade. in my program people typically graduated in five or six years; i myself took six years to finish everything up
for my program i took classes in a wide variety of areas, most of which were not directly related to what i wrote about for my dissertation, but all of which were extremely beneficial in 1) learning in areas outside of what i do, 2) helping me feel more prepared when teaching those subjects as part of my TA duties, and 3) allowing me to develop deeper critical and theoretical knowledge that helped me with writing the dissertation itself. i was also really happy that i was able to take classes outside of the theatre department (in the music and literature departments; though the lit class i took was a film class lol), which made total sense given my research is so interdisciplinary. the biggest thing i learned about my research throughout my time is that i very much live in the performance studies world (vs. theatre or drama) which is helpful framing given i write and teach about such a wide range of performance and media forms. my dissertation was much more a performance studies/musicology/american studies project than a Theatre™️ project, but i had a committee that really encouraged me to think across multiple disciplines with my work (and i also got to teach both theatre and film classes, which is pretty cool)
i also really appreciate that my program also gave us so much experience teaching! i taught every single quarter and many summers during grad school, which (while exhausting) not only gave me a ton of practice to build up my own pedagogical approach but made my CV pretty competitive as an early career scholar when applying to jobs. i don’t think i would have gotten multiple tenure-track interviews while still finishing my dissertation had i not had so much teaching experience (as instructor of record!) on there. i also am really grateful that my department also really cares about encouraging phds’ practice within and beyond the department, so i was able to dramaturg and/or direct ten shows within my department on top of a ton of outside gigs at the major LORT houses in town (which was also a really big deal)
the actual dissertation writing process sucks. it’s exhausting and thankless and even if you have a really amazing committee (like i did <3) it is extremely stressful and i do not know ANYONE who has reported a smooth and easy dissertation writing process LOL; however i had really good people on my side (friends, family, colleagues in the department and in arts and humanities in general at school, my faculty, my coworkers at the record shop, etc.) who were so supportive and my biggest champions as i was taking on this massive project. it was a lot but in all honestly even though it took so long, it was not the most difficult academic work i’ve ever had to do (that badge of dishonor goes to the horrendous process of getting my international baccalaureate diploma, which was so awful it led me to go to hippie college with no grades no tests and no majors LMFAO). i am super proud of my dissertation—if anyone wants to read it i’d be happy to send the link!—and even though there are plenty of sections i’ll rework for when i submit it to academic presses for publication, i am really pleased with the work i did and i think that it provides new and (imho) exciting scholarship about topics that i find really meaningful (many of which i’ve loved since i was a kid)
all of this to say, if people have phd, grad school, research, or otherwise related questions or want to chat, please hit me up! always happy to talk about this stuff / offer my very humble advice about any stage of the process <3

I added a history minor my second semester because I had an interest and I LOVED every history class but I kinda wish I'd have been able to do English instead with a focus on writing, but the minor requirements focused on Lit courses - nothing wrong with that, but it's not what I wanted to pay to study. Kinda sucks you pay for education but can't tailor it to what would be useful for your future.
What you said about wanting to study writing was interesting, because it sounds like you could have benefited from a creative writing MA or a comparative literature MA, but those are specialist and typically require a bachelor's understanding of writing and literature first. So maybe Lit would have a been a good choice! After all, the best way to learn how to write is to read/study other works. And that's exactly what a literature degree would do!
Also, I've always been interested in how college (and school!) works in the USA so thanks for the insight! I grew up watching american TV shows so know peripheral info like what SATs and GPA are (which have no equivalent in my country). We do have SAT exams, but they're pronounced 'sats' like the word, as in 'he sat on a chair'. Probably because SATs are taken at age 11 here, so no kid is going to bother saying S-A-Ts haha

Hello, yesss! Big time history nerd. Love to research and read up on non-fiction, watch docs. I love it all. Maybe surprising seeing as I use fictional mediation for a lot of escapist reasons, but nothing compares to deep diving into a topic or event or era and researching in general - it's engaging, it's similar.
I honestly could have/should have in theory taken something in the English track because yes - lit analysis is a way to better yourself as a writer, but when you think about it, it was the same learning process with different material: read/research, analyze, discuss, write essays. College me was much more interested in that subject matter.
I don't regret it, just wish I could have completely tailored my college classes to my whims - then again, that is ripe for disaster and development of educational life skills in general. Not the best idea? Oh well, did decently in college and came out of it ok, I'm managing my professional career just fine these days. I could never go back to school. Me coming out of college OK as in - survived all the intensive extreme struggles and I have no interest in further pursuing higher education at this point haha
I'm interested how schooling elsewhere works too! I had friends who studied abroad and I don't recall details but the grading system baffled me compared to how ours worked with the percentage and letter system and GPA. Gosh, getting flashbacks to SATs. I did good but those types of tests are sadistic.

you reblogged my post and said you were a funeral service worker right?
what does that entail? like what are you required to do and what education does it need?
Currently I’m an assistant— which requires nothing but a high school diploma and a good reference or two (you have to be a registered mortuary science student or provisional licensee to access any of the “back room” stuff like the embalming lab, though).
I am, however, studying to become a mortician, which requires two years of education, two six-month internships, and a board exam.
This is just for my state. Requirements vary wildly across the USA, and even more so in other countries.

Overview of IELTS # Egyaneknowledge The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a standardized test for non-native English speakers who want to study, work, or live in English-speaking countries. Recognized by over 10,000 institutions worldwide, IELTS is often a prerequisite for university admission, job opportunities, and immigration. This article covers everything you need to know about the IELTS exam, its structure, preparation tips, and how it can be your gateway to studying abroad.
What is IELTS?
IELTS is a test that assesses the English language skills of non-native speakers. It’s jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.
The exam is available in two formats:
1. Academic IELTS – Designed for those applying to universities or higher education institutions in English-speaking countries.
2. General Training IELTS – Intended for individuals planning to migrate to English-speaking countries or enroll in non-academic training programs.
Each version tests your ability to communicate in real-life situations and ensures you have the skills needed to succeed in an English-speaking environment.
Why Take the IELTS?
For students and professionals, IELTS is often a critical step in their journey to studying, working, or settling abroad.
Here are a few reasons why taking IELTS can open up new opportunities:
1. Global Recognition – Over 140 countries and 10,000 institutions accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency.
2. University Admission – Many universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand require IELTS scores for admission.
3. Visa and Immigration – Many countries require IELTS scores for immigration and visa processing.
4. Employment Opportunities – Multinational companies often require IELTS scores from candidates for international job roles.
Structure of the IELTS Exam
IELTS assesses four key language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Here’s a breakdown of each section:
1.Listening (30 minutes) : This section has four parts, each with ten questions, totaling 40 questions. You’ll hear recordings of native English speakers in a variety of contexts, from conversations to monologues, and answer questions based on what you hear.
2. Reading (60 minutes) : This section consists of three reading passages and a total of 40 questions. The passages range from descriptive and factual to analytical and critical, testing comprehension, main ideas, and details.
3. Writing (60 minutes): The writing test includes two tasks:
- Task 1 (150 words) for Academic IELTS: Describes data, charts, or diagrams.
- Task 2 (250 words): Essay writing that presents an argument or viewpoint. In General IELTS, Task 1 involves writing a letter, while Task 2 is a more general essay
4. Speaking (11–14 minutes): The speaking section is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, divided into three parts: an introduction, a short talk, and a discussion on abstract topics. The section evaluates your fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and coherence.
IELTS Scoring System
IELTS is scored on a scale of 0 to 9, with each skill receiving a band score. The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half-point.
Here’s a breakdown of the score levels:
- Band 9 – Expert User
- Band 7 – Good User
- Band 5 – Modest User
- Band 3 – Extremely Limited User
- Band 1 – Non-user
Each university or country may have a minimum score requirement for admission or immigration, typically between 6.0 and 7.5.
Tips for IELTS Preparation
1. Understand the Format – Familiarize yourself with the test format by reviewing sample questions and practicing past papers.
2. Develop Strong Vocabulary – A strong vocabulary is essential, especially for the Reading and Writing sections.
3. Practice Time Management – Each section has strict time limits, so practicing under timed conditions is essential.
4. Take Practice Tests – Practice tests can highlight areas that need improvement and help build confidence.
5. Seek Professional Guidance – If possible, consider enrolling in an IELTS preparation course or hiring a tutor for personalized feedback.
Test Dates and Registration
IELTS is available multiple times throughout the year in test centres across the globe. Registration is typically done through the official IELTS website or authorized centres.
To register:
1. Choose a test date and location that suits your schedule and apply early to secure a spot.
2. Pay the test fee (typically between $200–USD 250, but it varies by location).
3. Prepare the required documents for registration and bring them on the test day.
Studying Abroad with IELTS
With a good IELTS score, students can apply to universities in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Here are some of the top destinations:
- United Kingdom – Requires IELTS for student visas and is home to universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London.
- Australia – Most universities in Australia accept IELTS scores, and it’s a requirement for a student visa.
- Canada – Canadian universities accept IELTS, and it’s commonly required for study and work visas.
- United States – While TOEFL is popular, many U.S. universities accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency.
IELTS is more than just an English test; it’s a stepping stone to achieving your dream of studying abroad. By preparing strategically, understanding the test format, and practising regularly, you can achieve a high score and open the doors to numerous global opportunities. Whether you’re aiming to study at a prestigious university, start a career, or explore new cultures, IELTS is your pathway to an exciting future.

i had a major surgery ($1,600) to remove what we thought was one (but ended up being four) tumor(s) from my uterus earlier this year, and the next month my partner had to get an MRI ($700) and sleep study ($600) done as a routine eye exam found that he had intracranial hypertension. he was diagnosed with severe central sleep apnea with 104 instances of not breathing AN HOUR, and we have had to buy a bipap which has cost about $2,000 and requires electricity to run.
because my partner is and has been extremely chronically ill, i usually work to support us, but i am recovering from my own surgery, have no college degree, and have no experience in anything but labor-heavy positions. needless to say, we have almost nothing left to support ourselves.

Happy STS! Today I’m returning the back to school themed ask. Did Louisa always know what she wanted to pursue in the future, or did she struggle to choose a career? How do Keith and Zoe feel about her choice to study premed? (I’m thinking of how expensive schooling is in the USA😭, and we know the family doesn’t have TONS of extra money lying around.) And, finally, were there any other programs Louisa was tempted to enrol in instead? (Any part of her that secretly wished to be an English major? 😉)
Thanks for the ask, Kate, and happy STS!
Excellent question!
Despite having always loved reading and the written word, she was probably always more interested in a medical career, and there are many reasons for that. She was always an animal lover and also considered being a vet or a marine biologist when she was very young. And as we know, she enjoyed and did well in biology in high school (and even chemistry, before it became organic!). She does have a naturally caring and nurturing side (even though it doesn't always show), and in high school, she became a fan of several TV shows set in medical practices, which led her to think of medicine as a more "cool" career path (she was only 16, so we can forgive her for that).
But money ultimately was the deciding factor. She saw how the winds were blowing with her family and decided to concentrate on a career that would allow her to be financially stable and not dependent on either them or a husband. Her grades and exam scores were high enough to receive a full academic scholarship, so as long as she keeps her grades up, she doesn't have to worry about paying for her undergraduate degree (but obviously not if she fails a required course, which is part of the reason she was panicking so much -- without the scholarship, she'd be in danger of having to drop out altogether). And she's prepared to take out loans for med school, knowing the salary would be high enough that she'd be able to pay them back once she started working.
And of course, medicine is a field she thought would meet with more parental approval. When she was younger, Keith was definitely one of those parents who made it quite clear that business, law, or medicine were basically the only acceptable career options for his children -- mostly because, as we know, he didn't grow up rich himself and he was determined that his children wouldn't ever have to struggle. And to him, any career an English major would be qualified to do would count as "struggling." (It was Zoe's side of the family who were so-called "old money," and she certainly felt the same way, although she wasn't quite as adamant about it -- she was more of the "find a man to support you" mentality, which is even more distasteful to Lou!) Unfortunately, because of this, he really put the pressure on, and Ethan, who wasn't cut out for any of those fields, ended up getting the worst of it. Those feelings of inadequacy were part of the reason he developed the problems he did, and that in turn ended up being even more of a motivator for Lou, as the "last hope" for her family, to go into one of those prestigious fields and achieve what he couldn't.
If none of the above had been factors, yes, she might have given much more thought to studying English! All in all, she might well have enjoyed it more. It certainly would have been less stressful for her. But by the time it came to choose, she had already decided that medicine was the way. Then she started university, and the rest is history.😊

Why PTE Academic is the Best Choice for Studying Abroad?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/238a40faebaecafd95715162f506fec1/b6d84199b4b624a7-c3/s540x810/83a51a3bfbe1eaec2ef6701d703cabd5e3218e82.jpg)
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based exam designed to assess the English proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely used for higher education, work visas, migration, and permanent residency (PR) applications in English-speaking countries.
Understanding the PTE Exam: Types and Purpose
There are two primary types of PTE exams:
PTE Academic – This test is for individuals seeking admission to universities, work opportunities, or PR in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Finland, Belgium, Ireland, Singapore, Germany, the Netherlands, and others.
PTE Core – This version is mainly accepted in Canada for PR applications.
For those planning to study, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country, demonstrating proficiency in English is crucial. Among the available tests, PTE Academic is often the preferred choice due to its simplicity, efficiency, and convenience.
What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is a fully computerized English language proficiency test that evaluates non-native speakers in four key skills:
Speaking
Writing
Reading
Listening
The test is structured into three sections and lasts for just 2 hours, making it one of the most efficient language assessments.
Breakdown of PTE Academic Sections:
Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes) – Evaluates the ability to communicate effectively. Tasks include reading aloud, repeating sentences, and essay writing.
Reading (30 minutes) – Includes multiple-choice questions and paragraph reordering to test comprehension skills.
Listening (30–43 minutes) – Tests the ability to understand spoken English through audio clips and related questions.
Why PTE Academic is the Best Choice Over Other Tests
Many students and professionals prefer PTE Academic over other English proficiency tests like IELTS and TOEFL for several reasons:
Simplified Format – Achieving a high score in PTE can improve visa prospects. While IELTS demands an advanced grasp of English, PTE’s structured approach makes it easier to excel with consistent practice.
Fully Computer-Based – Unlike IELTS, where you must speak in front of an examiner, PTE’s speaking section is computer-based, reducing anxiety, especially for introverted test-takers.
Faster Results – PTE Academic delivers results within 24 hours, compared to IELTS, which takes 5–13 days.
Objective Scoring System – PTE uses AI-driven automated scoring, ensuring fair and consistent assessment without human bias.
Single Sitting Exam – Unlike IELTS, where the speaking section is scheduled separately, PTE Academic allows test-takers to complete all sections in one session.
Global Acceptance of PTE Academic
PTE Academic is recognized by universities, colleges, and governments worldwide. Elite Expertise offers specialized PTE preparation courses to help students clear licensing exams such as OPRA, PEBC, and PSI, further enhancing their academic and professional opportunities.
Some countries that accept PTE Academic include:
Australia & New Zealand – Used for education, immigration, and PR applications.
USA & UK – Recognized by top universities.
Canada – PTE Core is accepted for PR applications.
Germany, Singapore, Ireland, Netherlands – Required for admission to higher education institutions.
PTE Academic opens doors to a wealth of opportunities across the globe due to its widespread recognition.
How to Prepare for PTE Academic?
To excel in the PTE Academic exam, consider these preparation strategies:
Enhance Listening & Vocabulary – Watch videos, read articles, and listen to English podcasts.
Understand the Test Format – Familiarize yourself with the question types in each section.
Practice Regularly – Utilize official PTE practice materials and mock exams.
Identify Weak Areas – Focus on improving your weaknesses to enhance performance.
Simulate Real Exam Conditions – Practice under timed conditions to get accustomed to the test environment.
Tips for Success in PTE Academic
Speaking Section
Speak clearly and at a natural pace.
Avoid long pauses and fillers like “umm” and “uhh.”
Use natural intonation to make your speech more engaging.
Practice active listening for “Repeat Sentence” tasks.
Maintain an even pace during the “Read Aloud” section.
Keep your responses structured in the “Describe Image” task.
Maintain good posture and project your voice confidently.
Writing Section
Keep essays concise and well-structured.
Plan your points before writing.
Stick to the 200–300 word limit, with 230–240 words being ideal.
Reading Section
Develop the ability to skim and understand text quickly.
Expand your vocabulary for better comprehension.
Manage time efficiently during the test.
Listening Section
Listen to podcasts and practice listening exercises regularly.
Take notes while listening to key details.
Review answers before submitting them.
Conclusion
PTE Academic is a fast, fair, and flexible English proficiency test that caters to students, professionals, and immigrants worldwide. Its simple format, rapid results, and widespread acceptance make it the preferred choice for those aiming for international education and career opportunities.
With structured preparation and consistent practice, PTE Academic can be your gateway to global success.

What Makes PTE Academic the Best Test for Studying Abroad?
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based exam that assesses the English proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely used for higher education, migration, work visas, and permanent residency (PR) applications in English-speaking countries.
Types of PTE Exams: PTE Academic & PTE Core
PTE Academic
PTE Academic is an English proficiency test accepted for higher education, migration, and PR in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Finland, Belgium, Ireland, Singapore, Germany, the Netherlands, and more.
PTE Core (For PR in Canada)
PTE Core is primarily designed for candidates applying for PR in Canada. If you are planning to study, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country, proving your language proficiency is essential. Among various options, PTE Academic stands out as a preferred choice due to its efficiency, accuracy, and convenience.
What Is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is a computer-based English language test that evaluates non-native speakers in four key areas:
Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes): Includes tasks such as reading aloud, repeating sentences, and essay writing.
Reading (30 minutes): Involves multiple-choice questions and paragraph reordering to assess comprehension skills.
Listening (30–43 minutes): Tests your ability to understand spoken English through audio clips and related questions.
With a total test duration of just two hours, PTE Preparation provides a quick yet comprehensive assessment.
Why Choose PTE Academic Over Other Tests?
PTE Academic is preferred over exams like IELTS and TOEFL for several reasons:
Simplified Format – PTE is structured for ease of scoring, making it more accessible with basic language proficiency and regular practice.
Computer-Based Test – Unlike IELTS, where the speaking section involves face-to-face interaction, PTE is entirely computer-based, reducing anxiety.
Faster Results – PTE delivers results within 24 hours, whereas IELTS can take up to 13 days.
Objective Scoring – The automated scoring system ensures accuracy and eliminates human bias.
Single Sitting Exam – Unlike IELTS, which splits the speaking test into a separate session, PTE allows you to complete all sections in one sitting.
Who Accepts PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is recognized globally by universities, colleges, and governments:
New Zealand & Australia: Accepted for education, immigration, and PR.
USA & UK: Recognized by top universities for admissions.
Canada: PTE Core is accepted for PR applications.
Germany, Ireland, Singapore, the Netherlands: Required for university admissions.
How to Prepare Effectively for PTE Academic
Enhance Listening & Vocabulary – Watch videos, read articles, and listen to podcasts.
Understand the Test Format – Familiarity with question types can improve accuracy.
Practice Regularly – Use official PTE practice materials and take mock tests.
Identify Weak Areas – Focus on improving sections where you struggle.
Simulate Test Conditions – Practice under timed conditions to adapt to the real exam scenario.
Top Tips for PTE Success
Speaking Section:
Speak Clearly, Not Quickly – Prioritize pronunciation and clarity over speed.
Avoid Pauses & Hesitations – Maintain continuous speech and avoid fillers like “um” or “uh.”
Use Proper Intonation – A natural rise and fall in tone improves fluency.
Practice Active Listening – For ‘Repeat Sentence’ tasks, focus on both content and tone.
Avoid Monotone Speech – Vary pitch and tone to sound more natural.
Maintain a Steady Pace – Avoid speaking too fast or too slowly during ‘Read Aloud’ tasks.
Structure Image Descriptions – Introduce, describe key points, and conclude.
Stay Confident – Good posture and voice projection contribute to better scores.
Writing Section:
Keep It Simple – Focus on clarity rather than complex sentence structures.
Plan Your Response – Spend a few minutes structuring your essay before writing.
Follow the Format – Aim for 230–240 words in the essay (within the 200–300 limit).
Reading Section:
Improve Speed & Comprehension – Practice reading quickly while grasping meaning.
Expand Vocabulary – A strong vocabulary helps with multiple-choice questions.
Manage Time Wisely – Allocate time for each question to avoid rushing.
Listening Section:
Listen to Podcasts & Audiobooks – Develop better comprehension skills.
Take Notes While Listening – Write down keywords to recall answers easily.
Review Answers Before Proceeding – Double-check responses before clicking “Next.”

What You Need to Know Before Moving from the U.S. to Canada
It can be exciting to move to a new place, but you need to plan carefully, especially if you are moving from the USA into Canada. If you are attracted to Canada by its universal healthcare system, diverse cities or beautiful natural landscapes, knowing the essentials will help you avoid potential pitfalls and confidently start your new life. Here's a guide to help you prepare.
Why Consider Moving to Canada?
Canada is consistently ranked among the best countries for its quality of lifestyle. There's no surprise that so many Americans have crossed the border. From its friendly attitude toward immigrants to a robust job market and an affordable education system. You should research your options before packing up. Understand the legal requirements. Prepare for the cultural differences. Let's look at the essential information.
Understanding Canadian Immigration Pathways
Canada offers several immigration programs tailored to different goals. Here are the most common routes for U.S. citizens:
1. Express Entry
This system manages applications for skilled workers through three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class. Candidates are ranked based on age, education, work experience, & language proficiency.
2. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
If you have skills needed in a specific province (like Ontario or British Columbia), PNPs allow provinces to nominate candidates for permanent residency.
3. Family Sponsorship
If you have a spouse, parent, or child who’s a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, they may sponsor your application.
4. Work or Study Permits
Temporary permits can serve as stepping stones to permanent residency. For example, working in Canada under a permit might make you eligible for the Canadian Experience Class.
Eligibility Requirements: What You’ll Need
While requirements vary by program, most pathways ask for:
Proof of language proficiency (English or French).
Educational credentials (you may need an Educational Credential Assessment).
Sufficient funds to support yourself (and family, if applicable).
A clean criminal record and medical exam.
Start by checking your eligibility through Canada’s official immigration website or consult a Canada immigration agency like ours to clarify your options.
Preparing for the Move: Practical Steps
Once you’ve chosen your immigration pathway, it’s time to get organized:
Gather Documentation Passports, birth certificates, employment records, and reference letters should be ready early. Delays in paperwork are a common hurdle.
Research Your New Home Canada’s climate, cost of living, and job market vary by region. For example, Toronto and Vancouver are bustling but expensive, while smaller cities like Halifax offer affordability and community vibes.
Plan Finances Open a Canadian bank account, understand tax obligations (yes, the U.S. and Canada have a tax treaty!), and budget for initial costs like housing deposits and healthcare registration.
Healthcare Setup Canada’s healthcare is province-managed. You’ll need to apply for a health card after arriving, but private insurance is wise for the waiting period (up to three months in some provinces).
Settling In: What to Expect
Adapting to life in Canada is often smooth for Americans, but there are nuances:
Cultural Differences Canadians are known for their politeness and multiculturalism. Embrace local customs like tipping (15-20% in restaurants) and understanding metric measurements (kilometers, Celsius).
Job Market Tips Networking is key. Update your resume to Canadian standards (keep it concise) and use platforms like LinkedIn or Job Bank. Many industries, like tech and healthcare, are actively hiring.
Weather Preparedness Winters can be harsh. Invest in quality winter gear and learn to layer—thermal wear, waterproof boots, and a warm coat are essentials.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Underestimating Processing Times Immigration applications can take months. Apply early and track your status regularly.
Ignoring Provincial Differences Laws, taxes, and services vary by province. Research your destination thoroughly.
Skipping Professional Advice DIY applications risk errors. Even small mistakes can lead to delays or rejections.

How to Get into USA Law School by Rostrum Education
The United States has world-renowned Law schools, making it one of the top places to go if you wish to pursue a law degree. The top Law schools in the U.S. offer unmatchable educational setups and provide a door to influential and financially well-off careers. The alumni network in these schools allows you to leave your mark on the global legal landscape.
This guide looks at top law schools in the U.S. and their admission requirements.
How Hard Is It to Get into Law School? We will not feed you lies; getting into a law school is challenging, especially in the U.S. There are plenty of reasons for this. However, major ones include:
Law is a sought-after degree in itself; just like medicine and engineering, Law is looked at favorably around the globe. U.S. law schools rank among the top in the world. Harvard, Yale, and other Ivy League colleges offer top-of-the-world education. So, the competition for admission is cutthroat, making it hard to get accepted. Lastly, the job opportunities provided by the law degree are unmatched. Hence, the demand for top colleges increased, leading to more brutal competition. However, if we review the official requirements and study past trends regarding those requirements, we can understand what the college is looking for. Don’t worry; you do not need to review files and data yourself; we at Rostrum have done all the dirty work for you.
In this article, we have highlighted the past trends in various significant areas, including LSAT scores, GPAs, and the basic requirements for pursuing education in the United States.
Types of Law Degrees in the USA Before proceeding to the requirements, it is essential to know the type of education provided or the degrees offered by the Universities in the U.S. Unlike the United Kingdom (UK), law schools in the U.S. believe that law is appropriate for graduate students in the UK. However, one can pursue law as a bachelor’s degree.
That being said, the primary degrees offered by U.S. law school include;
Juris Doctor (J.D.) is a professional degree offered by universities in the U.S. that aims to prepare students to practice Law. A master of Law (LLM) is a graduate degree aimed at students who want to study a specific area of Law. A Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degree helps you gain knowledge of the Law, but you are not eligible to practice Law. You can also pursue a doctorate in Law called J.S.D or S.J.D. Having discussed the various types of degrees, it’s now time to explore the leading institutions that offer them – specifically, the top 10 law schools in the U.S.
Law School Pre-Reqs: What Do You Need to Get into Law School? Before the requirements, one needs to know how to make themselves eligible to apply for law school; this section covers this aspect. As said earlier, Law in the U.S. is primarily a postgraduate program, which means that in order to apply, you must have a bachelor’s degree.
Secondly, you must appear for the Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT). It is an exam whose scores are considered for getting into law school; LSAC, the conducting body for LSAT, says, “LSAT is an integral part of law school admission in the United States.”
Thirdly, one must also submit language requirements tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo.
Now, the question might arise: How much score must one get on these tests? The minimum IELTS score for undergraduates is 6.0, and for postgraduates, it is 6.5; however, the score fluctuates according to universities. Similar is the case with TOEFL; for example, an LLM program at Harvard expects you to have a total iBT score of 100. University of Minnesota Law School, on the other hand, requires no minimum TOEFL score.
TOEFL and IELTS can be burdensome tasks, especially when you are more focused on your LSAT preparation, so streamline your IELTS prep with us.
In addition to these, you must also submit a letter of recommendation and a Statement of Purpose or Personal Statement.
Is the LSAT Required for Law School? Yes, the LSAT Exam is a significant aspect of a college application and is very much required to get into law school in the United States due to its ability to assess prospective law students. The test is also accepted in Canadian law schools.
However, it is essential to understand that different colleges require different LSAT scores for admission. Top Ivy League colleges, such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale, require, on average, higher LSAT scores than, say, non-Ivy League colleges.
Here’s a list of top colleges and the average LSAT score. One must keep in mind that with an increase in the number of applicants, the competition is also increasing; therefore, one must aim for a higher than average score than the average score mentioned in this list.

To get a high score on the LSAT, one must thoroughly understand the LSAT pattern and the nitty gritty of the examination. There are four sections in the LSAT Exam: Reading comprehension Section, Logical Reasoning section 1, Logical Reasoning section 2, and Analytical Reasoning Section.
LSAT judges you on all these sections; read the complete guide to LSAT here.
What GPA do you need to get into law school? Just like LSAT scores, GPAs fluctuate from college to college. We know that, more often than not, there are colleges that say that the minimum required GPA is so and so.
The writer of this blog also understands that the LSAT was introduced to offset the importance placed on GPA scores. Still, if history and trends indicate what to expect in the future, then it is safe to say that one must not fall into that narrative; time and time again, we have noticed that the top colleges in the U.S. require high LSAT scores and high GPAs.
In fact, if you apply with an average GPA, to have a shot, you will have to compensate for that with an above-average LSAT score and extracurricular activity.
Thus, you should do your best to get a high GPA in your undergraduate studies.
Here’s a list of top colleges and the average GPAs of their class.

What should you do if your GPA is not up to the mark? A college application consists of essays, letters of recommendation, statements of interest, and LSAT and GPA scores. If you lack in any departments, you can make up for it by building on other areas. A low GPA can be compensated by scoring high on the LSAT Exam.
Best Majors For Law School Applicants In this section, we will learn what major or subject a student should take up in order to prepare themselves adequately for law school.
Before we explore specific majors ideal for preparing students for law school, it is essential to remember that law schools accept applicants from a wide range of academic backgrounds; the American Bar Association shares the same feeling.
The ABA offers this advice: “Whatever major you select, you are encouraged to pursue an area of study that interests and challenges you while taking advantage of opportunities to develop your research and writing skills.”
What this essentially means is that the sky is the limit when choosing your major. However, there are still subjects that traditionally prepare you for law school.
Subjects like history, Philosophy, English, political science, and Economics are considered favorably because they help build skills such as comprehension, articulation, and logical analysis.
However, as said earlier, one need not limit oneself only to the above-mentioned courses.
