Because I'm such a huge music nerd, I've contemplated some kind of indoor percussion au for the Hetalia characters several times, and even though I'll probably never go through with actually making something for it, I NEED to share my vision with yall.
I've been going in circles about who I'd assign to what instrument. Thankfully most of them seem pretty obvious, and if not then it's at least narrowed down to two options. But I know one for certain. One I CANNOT and WILL NOT negotiate. And that is America being snare one. He is center snare no matter what. I've considered other characters for sure, but no one else exudes center snare energy like he does. Some other considerations I've had:
Germany on drumset
Japan on either vibraphone or snare
Russia on marimba one
China on tenors
France on tenors
Italy on cymbals or glockenspiel/bells
Canada on marimba two
England on snare or a base guitar
I also think I'd have Austria as the director of the group. Just cause he's the canon music-nerd-guy. But really I'd like it to be a collaborative, team working kinda thing. But Austria can be the one with the final word, is what I wanna say. He can compose and arrange their music. (Oh and BTW, yes I'd like to include all characters in this, at the very least all canon characters, I mean I want the whole group but it can only be so big.)
If this were an actual full-fledged au, I do have some background... lore? I guess? to consider. I'd like this to be a nationverse au (as in not a human au). For one, there's the comedic factor.... actually that's it. That's the only reason. Cause it's funny. Like imagine one day the nations just randomly decide "hey, what's a better way to kill time than participate in WGI competitions?" Where do they get all the instruments and equipment from? Who knows! Even better. Imagine being in another group, walking into world championships or whatever, and seeing that your competition is literally the personifications of the nations of the world. I'd be very intimidated, personally. And like, to me it makes sense they're at that level (as in, international level). Maybe they don't start there, but I feel like they'd be able to work their way up there, yknow? After all, it'd be stupid if they lived that long and didn't at least pick up on an instrument here and there. Hell, some of them were probably there when they invented the fucking church modes and shit. But I digress, I'm just saying the immortal being had time to practice and learn how to play, read, and understand music.
I think the Hetalia characters forming an indoor percussion group would be sick af. For a variety of reasons really. Though it really boils down to what I really love about music; that it's something everyone, no matter what culture you come from, has in common. Music is such an integral part of every culture, of everyone's lives. So imagine how cool and fun it would be to see the nations of the world playing music together and having fun. Oh and, I just wanna add, I mainly aimed for percussion specifically because yes I am a biased percussionist, and also I made a poll recently about what instrument family the nations remind yall of and the majority voted percussion (spontaneous, wild, the impactful, and most importantly, the heartbeat). And I have to say, I do agree. The nations really are, in a nutshell, the heartbeat, the culture itself, the core identity. What better way to show that than through music? The universal language.
Anyway, I've been talking for way too long. If you have no idea what the hell I'm talking about when I say "WGI" or "indoor percussion", look it up on Google or YouTube, there are some pretty cool videos or performances, I highly recommend looking more into it. And there's many different levels to look at too.
Okthatsitbye!

ok so!!
first year guard member, feel free to correct me
i'm part of a school that's in cwea and used to have two etude members (and i think ensemble director?) as coaches, and as a result, we're very biased toward them. still, i think etude deserved their second place. i think they should've even gotten gold, but that might just be my very intense bias speaking.
ALSO paramount should've gotten so much higher ughh
(out of curiosity, op, were you a performer at the wgi world championships? no need to answer that if you're uncomfortable ofc!! 🫶)
I literally just made this account rn to post this
does anyone have any thoughts about WGI independent world rankings this year??
fusion coming in first? ETUDE COMING IN SECOND??? blessed sacrament only coming in third because paramount got a .10 penalty???? like that is actually crazy
personally as much as i loved fusion this year it didn’t seem like a gold medal show? meanwhile sac and paramount’s were crafted so well i’m amazed neither of them came in AT LEAST 2nd.

1, 2, & 12 !
HI MOONY :)
1. Okay this is oddly specific but my first notable hyperfixation was when I was little, I would just sit down and cover pages and pages of lined paper in scribbles and call it "writing", I filled probably fifteen notebooks with that (and it probably should have been an indication that I had ADHD 😭)
2. My longest hyperfixation would have to be colorguard, I am INTENSE about it and I have been for like almost six years now. It's nice though because at least it's productive and it lets out energy :)
12. OKAY I'm gonna go with three things about colorguard because I recently read two 12 page PDF's about the rules and inner workings of competitions and I have too many facts floating around in my head lmao so get ready for some random shit:
1. You are allowed to have any kind of battery as a prop besides a car or truck battery (at least according to the rules that I read)
2. There are four main elements which are flag, dance, rifle, and saber, but there's also air blade which we can all agree is bullshit and even the judges consider it a prop and not equipment
3. One of the biggest competition circuits in the country, WGI, holds World Championships every year in Dayton, Ohio (I haven't been with my team but they went a year before I joined, so I'm hoping we go again before I graduate!)
So yeah, some random shit <3

I haven’t felt this much hurt in a long time.
WGI announced today that all World Championships would be cancelled. This is unprecedented.
I cried my entire hour-long commute home. Uncontrollable sobbing. Because of how horrible this lack of closure is. There is no rescheduling, no later competition that we could still perform at. Our season, which began back in October, is done. Every single colorguard group’s season is done. No “one last run”, no “home show”, no “circuit championship”. Nothing.
Noone’s show was truly done. Noone’s story finished. Hundreds of productions that have been in creation since October, are now relegated to history without ever culminating in a final product.
We still had so far to grow and now no one will get to experience any of these productions again. Sure we have videos, but no one will ever get to see them in person and feel the electricity in the room.
It brings a cold stark reality to the common adage, “perform like it’s your last time”. Because it was the last time, even though none of us knew it.
Some of us will return with over abundant vigor because we can’t leave it this way. Others may be too hurt to ever come back. And others still were on their last season and will never get the opportunity again.
I am hurting, as is the rest of the performance world of WGI. All of us are crying today.

“CHANNEL ONE SUITE” – THE BUDDY RICH BIG BAND, by Nate Logan
In 1999 I was a freshman at Franklin Central High School and the drumline was my life. The band was a source of pride for our school whose last state championship came via football in 1990. The marching band dominated Band Day at the Indiana State Fair since 1993, placing first every year (minus a second place finish in ’97). The hard, white walls that every high school had then documented these championships: ours was in the back of the band room, painted on in blue. I didn’t know it then, but ’99 would be the last year Franklin Central would compete at the state fair. I got my first inclination of the all-devouring nature of the drumline the year previous. I played in the pit for that year’s show: music from The Mambo Kings. I remember trying to master the son clave rhythm without getting yelled at by my drumline director or one of the seniors. Many practices would happen where my director’s face would turn so red I thought he’d collapse. Drumline didn’t end with the marching season. We competed in indoor during the winter as part of Winter Guard International (WGI). Like marching band, we’d practice everyday after school and drive to contests on the weekends. This schedule led to many late nights completing homework for my AP courses, lack of time to be part of debate team, where most of my friends were, and zero hours for a job. Channel One Suite would be my favorite marching band show. For this, and for the remainder of my time in high school, I would march bass drum. Imagine walking in a straight line with your head permanently turned left or right while carrying 25 lbs. in front of you without hands and you get some idea. In performance, “Channel One Suite” can span from a little over 12 minutes (Mercy, Mercy) to almost 21 minutes (North Sea Jazz Festival). This time disparity largely depends upon the length of the solos: tenor saxophone at the song’s mid-point and drum near the end. Marching bands aren’t allowed such time on the field. Our performance of “Channel One Suite” was a tad over four minutes. In our version, the tenor solo was replaced with trumpet and the drum solo came in the middle of the song. It really wasn’t until earlier this year that I listened to “Channel One Suite” again. Now, I well up a little each time I hear Don Menza’s solo. I loved being part of marching band, but I did not love being in the drumline. It wasn’t until my senior year that I was brave enough to tell my director that I didn’t want to do winter drumline anymore. I used my newfound time to join the debate team. After one meet, I got to take home the team trophy. I was never yelled at once. - Nate Logan

Final Thoughts
Whelp….here it is. The end of another indoor season; my sixth. I got to wear a lot of different hats this past weekend: driver, vendor, performer, leader, errand boy… and I enjoyed them all equally.
I’m a part of four different ensembles, in different capacities. The Royal Cavaliers, Odyssey Indoor, Orange County Independent, and Broken City. Each ensemble has overcome their own set of challenges, and I am honored that in even the smallest way, I was able to contribute to each individual group’s success.
OCI and Odyssey are just finding their footing, and for groups in their first and second year, I’m so proud and happy that these performers have been able to accomplish everything that they have. I regret that I could not see them perform this weekend, as responsibilities took me elsewhere, but I’ve heard nothing but amazing things, and am happy they all got the outcome they deserved. I can’t wait to see what next year brings, and how far each performer grows both on an individual level as well as within each ensemble.
Broken City has already experienced success, and I’m so grateful that I was able to jump on just enough to experience what Independent World Class truly looks and feels like. Spine is the most poignant, important, and special show I’ve ever seen; it’s by far my favorite indoor production ever. And even though I know I don’t fully understand it, I’m forever going to be grateful for each chance I got to see the show and for the emotional response it elicited from me. I’m jealous of the performance quality and I hope one day that we can bring that level of intensity and emotion to the indoor winds activity.
Last, but certainly not least, my Royal Cavaliers kids. We talked a bit in the hotel, but my biggest regret of the weekend is that I didn’t get to spend more time with you. I was apprehensive about joining a group that I knew would be younger than me in both age and experience, but I knew I would be upset with myself if stupid reasons like those were the reason I didn’t perform. I’m so glad I made the right decision. You were by far the most positive group of people I’ve ever gotten to work with; the most well mannered and respectful and just all-around pleasant to be around (when you weren’t putting sugar packets in my hair). I wish we lived closer, and I wish we had more time together, especially those who came in towards the end of the season and really bolstered our sound and saved us. I am forever thankful for you. I can only hope we all get to perform and hang out with each other again sometime.
Everyone from The Royal Cavaliers, Broken City, Orange County Independent, and Odyssey Indoor, whether you are a performer or staff member or supporting the groups, you all have a special place in my heart. I’m sure we all can get annoyed with each other sometimes, especially when we’re in such close contact with each other towards the end. But we are all one family of performers, fighting for the same slice of history and memories as everyone else. We are all on the same side we all want the same things. Consider; this is the first time both Pulse and RCC were defeated by another California group. I THINK this is the first time a California group has brought three ensembles to WGI World Championships. Royal Cavaliers is only the second independent California group, and only the second independent group west of Texas, to compete in WGI World Championships. That’s all history. It can never be changed. It is written and done, and that’s so exciting to me. We have left our mark. I can’t wait to see what else we can do.
It takes a village: Sean Cunningham, Lori Miller, Sergio Cabrera, Nik Woods, Kevin Taylor, Monica Taylor, Mike Stockwell, Linda Stockwell, Judith Crespo-Moreno, Sue Fowler, Cherish Sally, Lisa Spice, Sydney Spice, Pops, Danielle Hawthorne, Mrs. Ramsey, Mr. Ramsey, Robert Lowery, Thom Willett, Brian Shay, Troy Campbell, Brian Almiron, Lance Delgado, David Lemus, John Meehan, and all the staff who are apart of the OCI Ensembles, and anyone who I regretfully forgot . . . thank you for everything that you’ve done, and everything that you continue to do for these performers, and for me. I’ve learned so much just this season alone, and I hope to put all that information to good use very soon. Thank you for supporting, composing, teaching, guiding, and leading all of us. (Shoutout to my alma matter too; Ayala High School; Mark Stone, Ike Jackson, Sean Gordon, Ryan Castro, Ernie McLauren). I am in awe of everything you do for us performers, and thank you all, staff and performers alike, for INSPIRING me in the pursuit of excellence that is this activity.
Forever grateful,
Sammy Knapp
