“I’m working on honoring all of my desires, honoring what I’m passionate about,” Yara Shahidi says. The 20-year-old star of ‘black-ish’ and ‘grown-ish’ is a co-president of the newly formed 7th Sun Productions, alongside her mother, Keri Shahidi. For the past few years, she has also hearded a youth vote initiative called Eighteen x 18 and worked alongside progressive news site NowThis. For the 2020 election, she and the initiative, now going by WeVoteNext, are working to provide accurate candidate information to first-time voters. We talked to her about the formation of 7th Sun Productions, imagining new worlds in media and her voting initiatives.

Naomi Campbell, Yara Shahidi, Stacey Abrams & Tommie Smith To Be Honored At 2020 Bounce Awards
youtube
The Bounce Trumpet Awards has announced its 2020 honorees. This year's 29th annual ceremony is called The Bounce Trumpet Awards: Stand Up and it is intended to recognize those who have chosen to fight the social injustices faced by African Americans. Georgia political leader Stacey Abrams will receive the Valor Award which honors the individual who faces conflict with bravery as she did with her Fair Fight Action voter awareness organization that worked to help facilitate a record turnout for the 2020 election.
Yara Shahidi, who is known as an actress on the TV shows Grown-ish and Black-ish, will receive the Trailblazer Award.  The honor is for pioneers who inspire others to follow their path to greatness while challenging the status quo. Shahidi founded WeVoteNext (formerly Eighteen x 18) with Now This News to encourage voting for the 2018 and 2020 elections and has a partnership with the Young Women's Leadership Network of New York.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell will receive the Vanguard Award which recognizes those who share avant-garde ideas with the mainstream and makes a social impact in their field. Campbell has called out racism in the modeling industry and started charity relief efforts around the world for natural disasters.
Former American Track and Field star Tommie Smith will receive the Xernona Clayton Award Of Distinction named after the esteemed founder of the Trumpets, which recognizes individuals who, having succeeded against immense odds, herald change, and prosperity to enhance and enrich the world. Smith's silent gesture of protest at the 1968 Olympics continues to be a historic and enduring image for athletes and activists standing up against injustice today.
Singer Mariah Carey, director Lee Daniels, actor and activist Jesse Williams, actor Trevor Jackson, political activist Angela Davis and former congressman Bakari Sellers will help to pay tribute to the honorees.
Anthony Hamilton, Busta Rhymes, Bell Biv Devoe and Terrace Martin will provide the music.
The Bounce Trumpet Awards will broadcast on Sunday, December 13th at 8:00 PM ET.

Gigi Hadid Wore a “Vote" Tee to Her Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Fittings
Gigi Hadid is giving new meaning to the term "fashion statement": She's using her outfit to encourage people to get out and vote.
On Sunday, the model attended fittings ahead of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (which she's walking in alongside Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid) wearing a Prabal Gurung T-shirt that said, simply, "VOTE" in neon letters. She kept the rest of her look simple with boyfriend jeans, a black blazer, and black boots, letting the tee speak for itself. Ever the fashion icon, she accessorized with an electric orange bag and a pair of tinted sunglasses.
Gigi took to her Instagram stories to show off her T-shirt and further her message, writing, "On or before Tuesday! Please vote Nov 6."
With the midterm elections one day away, Gigi is one of many celebrities who are using their platforms to urge fans to head to the polls. Taylor Swift made headlines when she made her first-ever political endorsement, and Ariana Grande's voting messages have been a constant fixture on her Instagram feed over the past few weeks. Yara Shahidi wore a "VOTE" T-shirt of her own for the Eighteen x 18 #WeVoteNext summit, and has spoken in the past about why it's so important for everyone to use their voices in elections: "My passion really stemmed from having gone through the 2016 election, where myself and many of my peers were unable to vote," she previously said in an interview with Teen Vogue. "A lot of them went with their parents to the polls, but there was that feeling of being lost. Like, 'What can we do to contribute to our sociopolitical landscape?'"

The answer, as Gigi Hadid so aptly put it, is simple: Vote.

#WEVOTENEXT
I am extremely humbled as I reflect upon the past weekend's experience. I attended the #WEVOTENEXT summit with some of the finest youth leaders across the country. I was so honored to be representing Virginia for my non-profit, The YouDefineYou Project. I was able to brainstorm with other young people and create a plan of action about how we were going to get young people to turn out to the polls this year. Now more than ever, young people are the voice and the future for this country. Your vote does matter in the grand scheme of things. Voting is a way we can express our first amendment rights and take action on the change we would like to see. I encourage all people of every age to vote on November Tuesday, November 6th, 2018.
