“The art that defined a generation” - WES WILSON
Tumblr media
Wes Wilson was a psychedelic poster artist, his style was inspired by the Art Nouveau influences in the late 60s and would turn promotional art inside out. Mr Wilson was known as one of the leading artists for the psychedelic influence.
He invented this style that is now highly know with the peace movement and the hippy culture throughout 1960s-70s. In particular, Wes was known for creating and popularising a ‘psychedelic font’ around 1966, to make it seems that the letters and words were moving. Wilson was also considered to be one of the “The Big Five” San Francisco poster artists, along with Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, and Stanley Mouse.
Tumblr media
Mr Wilson’s work was filled with cryptic letters, lines melted into lines and bold colours clashing into one another. This was when the psychedelic poster was born. The posters he created were the beginning of the visual discussion between fine art and commercial art, Wes really wanted to capture the 2 different types of art and merge them together, in order to feel a psychedelic trip.
After a friend showed him a copy of a 1908 poster done by the Viennese Secessionist artist, Alfred Roller, that contained an alphabet and lettering style similar to what Wilson had been doing, Wilson absorbed the Roller style, altering it in an explosion of lettering creativity that changed the poster scene permanently. His style of filling all available space with lettering, of creating fluid forms made from letters, and using flowing letters to create shapes became the standard that most artists followed in order to put “psychedelic” in the art.
Tumblr media
The first clear example of this, and a key piece in Wilson’s history, was the poster BG-18, done for a show with the Association at the Fillmore Auditorium. Set in a background of green is a swirling flame-form of red letters. With this poster came a new concept in the art of that time, perhaps the first truly ‘psychedelic’ poster.

What I love about Mr Wilson’s work is that you almost don’t know what you’re looking at or where this idea came from, however,  it’s a very busy poster and very intriguing. You can't take your eyes from it, if anything you are more drawn to his work.
While Wes Wilson is known for his eye catching poster art, that's not where his creative energies stopped.  Wes took advantage of other mediums, as well, and enjoyed creating unique ink drawings and ink and watercolor art.

Wes: What changes have you guys noticed in yourselves since you started doing YouTube?
Baj: Confidence I 'spose is the main thing.
BTC: I've actually... become a lot more friendly.
*uproarious laughter*
BTC: I know, it's like "So wait, if this is more then what were you before?" You don't wanna know. But no, I was um, I was a very very reserved person, very much kept to myself and... the kind of person like, I didn't laugh a lot, I didn't have fun, you know, like everything--seriously! Everything in my life was-was just... dull. And like--
*Guude laughing*
Pause: Why you laughing at him? Stop it!
Guude, still laughing: Sorry.
BTC: Now that I switched into doing YouTube fulltime and I no longer have any of the restrictions that I used to have I've actually been enjoying life more I suppose.
Zisteau: I personally wear pants way less often.

Por él, Wilson recibió el primer premio y la beca The National Endowment for the Arts.

I had a good weekend checking out shows at my old haunts. I was at the Fillmore and Warfield for two completely different shows. Last night I saw the awesome #MrBungle at the Warfield, but the night before I had made the poster for the band #Iration and their show at the Fillmore. It’s been years since I made posters for this venue. Was fun to do one again and visit this awesome gallery. Check out the amazing walls of posters from the past featuring artists like #WesWilson, #LeeConklin, #StanleyMouse, #BonnieMacLean, #AltonKellley, #RickGriffin, #VictorMoscoso, #RandyTuten, #DavidSinger and so many more. I am honored to share the walls with these artists. I found a few of mine ➡️ Scroll to see some. Good times in San Francisco ✌🏻 #gigart #poster #posters #gigposter #gigposters #concertposter #concertposters #billgrahampresents #bgp #billgraham #thefillmore #thewarfield #illustration #drawing #inspiration @thefillmore @iration #bayareamusic #citylife #citynights #60sart (at The Fillmore) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8XAXFlBDa_/?igshid=ktlem7s48ro1

Why did Wes put Rob's full name in his Building Game title??? Why not just OldManWillakers or BruceWillakers??
He didn't put Joe as Joseph Hills, or Chad as Chad Johnson lol
