West German Art Pottery refers to pieces that were created in West Germany between 1949 and 1990. The style features large, geometric designs on decorative pottery like vases, jugs, and bowls. These pieces are often called “Fat Lava” by ceramics collectors, referencing a thick glaze used by many manufacturers which resulted in a bold colours, heavy contrast, and solid, tactile finishes.

The red and brown vase is by Scheurich-Keramik, one of the largest and most prolific studios of this era. They are still in operation today. The large blue vase was made by Carstens Tönnieshof who were in operation until the late 1970s. The company branded its pottery with a ‘double-house’ mark.

Grizelle Pottery, as it is known, was actually the name of a distribution company that distributed this distinctive pottery throughout Australia in the 1950s - 1960s. It was produced in either West Germany or Japan and had very desirable colours and glazes. This is a piece from the early 1960s. It has a numbered base and was made in Japan in Maroon, creams and Browns, with a wonderful hand painted drip design and high gloss glaze.
