hi! thanks for running the rewatch!
does this post from ursula's blog show the circle of friends?
www.tumblr.com/watchprojects/81494292122/this-is-the-best-place
Very happy to share this rewatch of the series with you all!
No, that is a different part of Western Springs Park (*SPOILERS*it's where the characters go in MONTAGE (aka Ursula's Picnic) when they drive away from the mountain, play a loose game of soccer, and TeamB get their songs played to each other*END SPOILERS*). I don't think it has a specific name, but it is nearby.
The Circle of Friends is a really peaceful spot, a memorial to those lost to HIV/AIDS - More Info.
Map of Western Springs Lakeside Park
If memory serves correctly, the Circle of Friends is the Monument in the lower left quarter, and the spot Ursula loves is where the Electric Barbeque is located to the left of the Circle of Friends. You can see more of The Circle of Friends in our NMTD Auckland Meetup! video.
The Park is basically next door to "Messina High" so one can imagine the characters spent a fair bit of time there together on their ways home etc

My Brief Introduction
As an international student exploring Auckland, I aim to travel to different parts of the city from a tourist’s perspective. I am looking for interesting angles, meaningful moments, and amazing places, all while learning more about the uncertainties in this wonderful city. This paper provides me with a great opportunity to explore Auckland and avoid the ‘no time’ excuse. I want to deepen my understanding of this beautiful city, immersing myself in the culture and history behind each location. Additionally, I hope to discover my own culture within Auckland, capturing photos that reflect my unique perspective.
To push myself further, I will...
Capture things that resonate with me in Auckland (places or people that remind me of Hong Kong).
2. Explore the relationship between time and lighting.
3. Learn how to tell a compelling story through my photography.
4. Experiment with different angles.
5. Research the history behind each place I visit.
History of Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau)
Māori first settled in the Auckland isthmus around 1,000 years ago. The name “Tāmaki” has several interpretations, including “Tāmaki-makau-rau,” which means “Tāmaki of a hundred lovers,” referring to its desirability as a fertile site at the hub of a network of waterways. In 1840, Lieutenant Governor William Hobson selected Auckland as the new site for New Zealand’s capital, relocating it from Russell in the Bay of Islands. The bottom of Queen Street (formerly Horotiu Bay) was chosen as the main settlement site due to its suitability for transferring goods and settlers from ships to shore.
The Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) or volcanic cones of Tāmaki hold great importance in the historical, spiritual, ancestral, and cultural identity of the thirteen iwi (tribes) and hapū (subtribes) of Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau.
Places I Can Explore:
Rangitoto Island: An iconic volcanic island popular for hiking and exploration. I plan to hike to the summit for stunning views and explore its lava caves and tunnels.
One Tree Hill: A site rich in history with beautiful natural features.
Western Springs Lakeside Park: A popular and expansive park located in central Auckland.
Wynyard Quarter: A waterfront area featuring parks, restaurants, and stunning views of the harbor.
As an international student, my knowledge of Auckland is still developing. I plan to ask my local friends for insights and learn more about the city. It’s exciting to be an explorer, venturing into places I’ve never been or haven’t fully explored, and finding answers to the uncertainties I encounter along the way.

Week 7
Contact Sheet
Photos selected from the contact sheet
This week's photos were taken at Western Springs Lakeside Park. I invited my friends to be my models and captured various moments of them feeding the animals with bread crumbs. The sunlight accompanied them throughout, enriching the scenes with vibrancy and humor. I aimed to capture my theme "friends and light" by photographing them while they chatted and walked, hoping to freeze moments of friendship and joy for eternity.
Research and Ideas
I drew inspiration from photobooks like Melissa Schriek's "Ode," observing how she employs photography to convey emotional depth and narrative complexity. This influence guides me in capturing moments of friends being together and the changing interplay of light and shadow in different environments. The photos depict friends engaging in various activities, sharing joy, laughter, and contemplation, illuminated by natural or artificial light sources. Each photograph reflects the intimacy between friends while highlighting the beauty of light.
The friendships depicted in this photobook remind me of a favorite author of mine, Elena Ferrante, and her work "My Brilliant Friend," a novel primarily centered around friendship. The story portrays the profound friendship between the protagonist and her brilliant friend. Despite facing many challenges and disagreements, they always support and uplift each other. Friendship plays a crucial role in the story, helping them navigate through life's difficulties, sharing joys and sorrows, and becoming indispensable parts of each other's lives. Through this friendship, I have come to appreciate the true power of friendship and the importance of supporting each other in times of need.
I have also read her "Frantumaglia," a collection of interviews and letters. In the thirteenth piece, "Confusion Under the Belief," in an interview with Elisa Sabelo, Ferrante discusses, "Friendship is a crucible of positive and negative feelings that are in a permanent state of ebullition."
So I plan to use friendship and light as the themes for my photography. The connection between the two is so close that they both constitute an important part of my life. Through my photography, I hope to capture the beautiful moments between friendship and light, as well as the warmth and hope they bring to people. I believe that guided by such a theme, my work will be able to showcase genuine and profound emotions while conveying the power and significance of friendship and light to the audience.

Exploring Nature's Masterpiece at The Best National Parks in Vancouver
Located near bustling Vancouver but offering escape from the city, some of Canada's most spectacular national parks showcase nature's masterpieces just a drive away from Vancouver International Airport (YVR). From coastal rainforests and islands to rugged alpine landscapes, these parks preserve an impressive diversity of ecosystems. This blog highlights five national parks within a few hours of Hotels at YVR Vancouver Airport that visitors can explore while staying in the many convenient hotels surrounding the airport: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, Mount Revelstoke National Park, Kootenay National Park and Yoho National Park. Whether beachcombing ancient forests, hiking mountain trails or kayaking through islands, these national parks offer a taste of wilderness while still maintaining easy access back to the modern amenities of Vancouver.
Pacific Rim national park reserve: where rainforest meets ocean
Located on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve offers visitors views where the lush temperate rainforest meets the wild ocean. The park stretches along the island's perimeter and contains beaches, coves and headlands only accessible by hiking trails winding through the dense coastal rainforest. Along these trails visitors get glimpses of the park's signature giant western red cedar, Douglas fir and banana slugs as well as chances to spot grey whales, black bears and bald eagles.
At Bamfield Inlet, a trail leads 2.5 kilometres each way through the forest to a sheltered beach with views of the crashing waves and rocky shoreline. Those flying into Vancouver International Airport can spend the night in one of the many nearby hotels before an early morning rental car trip to join one of the guided interpretive walks along the inlet. A full day at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve offers visitors a memorable taste of Canada's renowned west coast natural environment before returning in the evening to the amenities of hotels near YVR for overnight accommodation.
Gulf islands national park reserve: island hopping paradise
Comprising around 5,000 hectares spread across various islands in the Salish Sea south of Vancouver, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve provides opportunities for visitors to experience over a dozen different island ecosystems. Some of the islands are accessible only by water while others can be reached by short ferry rides from various ports on Vancouver Island and the mainland. Salt Spring, Galiano and Pender Islands feature lush forests and sandstone cliffs overlooking the ocean. Kayakers and boaters can explore the islands' sheltered coves and spot wildlife such as grey whales, bald eagles, and sea otters along the shore.
Many travellers flying into Vancouver opt to spend a relaxing few days island hopping in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. From Vancouver International Airport, it is a short drive to Sidney on Vancouver Island's Saanich Peninsula to catch one of the ferries to the islands. Those who wish to fully immerse themselves can spend nights in eco-friendly resorts and cottages situated around the islands' shorelines, while still being less than an hour away from the variety of YVR Vancouver Airport hotels or ferry for parts of their trip. Island hopping offers calm respite surrounded by scenic coastline and seascapes.
Mount revel stoke national park: alpine adventures
Nestled in the Selkirk Mountains just north of Revelstoke, BC, Mount Revelstoke National Park offers visitors alpine adventures amidst scenic mountain landscapes. The park encompasses over 260 square kilometres of rugged glaciated peaks, forested valleys and two glacial lakes. Hikers and climbers can challenge themselves along over 75 kilometres of trails ranging from lakeside strolls to climbs up rocky slopes with panoramic views over the surrounding ranges. In the winter months, the park transforms into a snowy wonderland attracting skiers and snowshoers.
Many visitors access the park as a day trip from Vancouver after a red-eye flight into YVR airport. They can rest up at one of the sleek hotels near the airport with amenities before an early morning drive north through scenic farmlands and riverside towns for over four hours. Spending the afternoon exploring the park's trails and lakes provides a refreshing antidote to city life. Returning in the evening allows time for a relaxing dinner in historic Revelstoke before the nighttime flight back to Vancouver from the convenient YVR airport location.
Kootenay national park: a rocky mountain gem
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains on the east side of BC, Kootenay National Park is a gem offering rugged alpine beauty. Spanning over 1,406 square kilometres, the park takes in glaciated mountaintops, pristine valleys dotted with vibrant meadows and lakes, and the spectacular Marble Canyon. The Redstreak Circuit Trail provides breathtaking valley views, while other trails wind through dense forests to alpine destinations. In late spring and summer, vibrant wildflowers like Indian paintbrush and lupine decorate the mountainsides.
Many visitors from Vancouver explore Kootenay National Park on a long day trip or short overnight getaway. After landing at YVR airport, it is a 5.5 hour drive to the park through mountain resort towns like Whistler. Those who wish to fully experience the wilderness can stay in the backcountry campgrounds under starry alpine skies or opt for the comfort of hotels in nearby Radium Hot Springs and within an hour of the airport. With its sheer rocky peaks and vibrant valleys, Kootenay offers a memorable taste of the majestic Canadian Rockies close to Vancouver.
Yoho national park: majestic waterfalls and more
Nestled along the border with Alberta, Yoho National Park is renowned for its turquoise glacial lakes and thundering waterfalls. Iconic sights like the stunning Emerald Lake and powerful Takakkaw Falls draw visitors from around the world. The park's mountains formed alongside the continent-shaping forces of the Canadian Rockies and preserve a diversity of ecosystems. Hiking trails weave through subalpine meadows and dense forests offering glimpses of wildlife like bighorn sheep and grizzly bears. In summer, frequent storms add to the drama of crashing waterfalls and rugged peaks.
Many travellers include a visit to majestic Yoho National Park in their Vancouver trip itinerary. After landing at YVR Vancouver International Airport, it is under a 5 hour drive to the park through scenic towns along the Sea to Sky Highway like Squamish and Whistler. Visitors can spend nights in the park's campgrounds surrounded by mountain splendour or stay in lodges inside nearby Banff or Lake Louise before returning to city comforts at YVR area hotels. A day in Yoho offers awe-inspiring vistas and adventures amidst some of Canada's most iconic mountain wilderness.
Conclusion
Vancouver provides a convenient base for travellers to witness some of Canada's most stunning natural scenery without venturing too far from urban comforts. From rainforest-linedPacific Rim National Park to the towering peaks within Banff National Park, each destination featured in this blog offers majestic beauty. By leveraging the many accommodation options available near Vancouver International Airport, visitors can fully immerse themselves in nature for a day or longer getaway before returning in the evening to YVR area hotels. With epic coastal and alpine vistas so closely located, it is easy to understand why outdoor enthusiasts and travellers alike are drawn to exploring Vancouver's surrounding natural masterpieces again and again.

Mā te Wā (See You Later) New Zealand
What began with just one COVID case on August 18th 2021 became NZ’s longest lockdown, spreading to over 1,000 Kiwis. It has been 53 days since we were in Queenstown and heard the announcement, and Auckland is still in Level 3 lockdown. This cancelled my trips to Abel Tasman, Stewart Island, and a last road trip, but it did not change my plans to go back home. This meant that I had to leave without saying a proper goodbye.
Alecia, Aidan, Greg, and Kaitlin formed my “leaving committee” they all chipped in and got me a beautiful pounamu (greenstone) necklace which is a taonga (treasure) to the Māori people. In addition to that, they sent me off in the best lockdown fashion - by putting together a goodbye video with messages from my friends across NZ. It’s a beautiful memory that I will enjoy being able to watch at my leisure.
In reflecting on these last 19 months, I put together some highlights and notes from my experiences in NZ:
Stats:
Time spent in NZ: 20 months (609 days)
Time spent in lockdown (Levels 3 & 4): 123 days
Steps taken: Over 7.5 million
Miles walked: Over 2,900
Trips taken: Over 33
Locations visited: Over 122
Activities:
Kayaking
Tramping (hiking)
Spelunking for glow worms
Boogie boarding
Camping
Climbing
Rock skipping
Cliff/rock jumping
Mountain biking
Luge-ing
White water rafting
Black water rafting
Frisbee golf
Skiing on a volcano
Wine tasting
Fishing
Boating
High ropes course
Bird watching
High-quality cooking
Stargazing
Backpacking
Road tripping
Highlights:
Favorite North Island Trip: Great Barrier Island
This is a trip that most tourists and kiwis alike never get the chance to do. Great Barrier Island is 100 km away from Auckland and is covered with breathtaking beaches, scenic bushwalks, and top-notch fishing if you’re into that sort of thing.
Favorite South Island Trip: Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is a beautiful town at the base of a large lake surrounded by often snow-capped mountains. Trekking around here will give you the quintessential South Island views. The town is an International Dark Sky Reserve, and the Mount John Observatory offers a spectacular stargazing experience.
Favorite Hike: Tongariro Crossing
This was the longest and most crowded hike I went on; however, the wide variety of landscapes and challenging conditions made it the most rewarding.
Favorite Day Trip: Tiritiri Matangi
It’s just a 75-minute ferry ride from Auckland to this beautiful bird sanctuary. For $10, you can get a guided tour and learn all about the native birdlife and endemic plants. There, you even have the opportunity to see takahē in the wild!
Favorite Park in Auckland: Western Springs Lakeside Park
Western Springs Lakeside Park doubles as a wildlife sanctuary and was walking distance from my house. There, you can see black swans, ducklings, pukekos, shags, geese, eels, and more.

12/05/2022-Young Starlings and more at home and Lakeside
I saw my first young Starlings of the year today which I had been waiting for. It was brilliant to see two of these cute fresh birds with adults in the garden, seeing them calling and some feeding too. I also had similar with the young ones looking nice among the daisies on the green areas by Lakeside on my way back from my lunch time walk. Its always such an exciting time of year and one of my favourites particularly in the garden bird year when these are around. I took the first picture in this photoset of a young Starling by Lakeside and second picture in this photoset of one in the garden. I also enjoyed seeing and photographing Feral Pigeon and Woodpigeon with some nice interaction between birds of the latter on the roof visible from my room, and seeing lots of House Sparrows, Goldfinch and Jackdaw from home out the front and back today. I took the third picture in this photoset of the pretty multi coloured flower pot in the front garden.
On my perimeter Lakeside walk today going on a route round in a square covering lots of areas of the country park as my weekly perimeter walk always does, it was a great walk for zooming into the little things. In the meadows it was so exciting to see the grass really getting higher and developing so well. It feels so hopeful to see this rich source of varied life springing up. I enjoyed seeing special flowers on my lunch time walk including; black medick or possibly some of it like the patch on the green out the front in the fourth picture in this photoset may have been lesser trefoil lovely little yellow flowers close to the ground that I loved learning last year and have enjoyed seeing on the green out the front this week I saw some great bits of it at Lakeside today too, white campion the first I’ve ever seen at Lakeside and a third campion for me this year after red and the sea campion in Pembrokeshire so this excited me, cleavers which I really enjoyed seeing and photographing also known as stickywilly I have realised I have long known these and remember them a lot from walks and days out in my childhood, clovers I believe broad-leaved and white but they could possibly have been alsike clover, daisy, sorrel and cow parsley looking nice together as shown in the seventh picture in this photoset, my first oxeye daisies out at Lakeside this year like the one in the sixth picture in this photoset, vetch, speedwell, cuckooflower, garlic mustard, bluebells still going strong, yellow iris adding some great yellow to the landscape and buttercups carpeting the place beautifully in places. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of some flowering along the northern path.
And the flowers hosted insects and other creatures well as I enjoyed beetles, a bright white spider on and under an oxeye daisy as I have seen here before and a possible thrip on the flowers. I like it when you notice a flower then end up noticing other things on and around it and spending time with them. As a bit of sun that had shone well early today but it clouded over a bit as the day went on shone brightly on some lush green leaves a bit of a sun trap along the northern path I loved zooming in to see common blue damselflies flitting around and a fine Speckled Wood butterfly soaking up the sun.
It was a brilliant walk of birds too as I got an epic view of a male Blackcap belting out its song near to the visitor centre. It was right next to me and it was so pleasant and energetic as I soaked in its beautiful song with it being so loud right next to me. I didn’t know where to look at the western shore of Kornwestheim lake as I spotted a male Tufted Duck perhaps closer than I’d ever seen one at Lakeside before having a preen allowing for glorious view, two adorable Mallard ducklings with their mother looking quite bigger now and a Canada Goose coming towards me, with the first Mute Swans I’ve seen at Lakeside since February I believe swimming rapidly around the lake. This may be a regular pair that I knew here for years which seem to come here less now so it was good to see them, I caught up with them further round the lake to get a photo which I tweeted tonight on Dans_Pictures. I hope the swans may stay to nest.
I took the ninth picture in this photoset of a lovely green view looking over the northern fenced off area, there were some beautiful views on the walk today I loved immersing myself in the path south of the site walking down this bit quite fast taking in how green everything surrounding it was and getting lost in it a bit. Tonight has been another special night of sky scenes from interesting cloud formations, I took the tenth picture in this photoset of one.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: Blackbird, Starling, Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Blackcap, Feral Pigeon, Woodpigeon, Jackdaw, Magpie, Mallard, Greylag Goose and goslings, Canada Goose, Mute Swan, Speckled Wood, a white butterfly I couldn’t quite tell which, Common Blue damselfly, beetles, thrip and I heard Chiffchaff.

The heartland
Hello again!
Chris and I have had yet another marvelous week-and-a-half in New Zealand filled with lots of excitement and adventure. The last time we posted we were resting up by the beach on the east coast of the North Island after completing our first Great Walk. Ten days later, we have completed our second Great Walk and are resting up by the beach on the west coast of the North Island in a city called Whanganui. It’s dreary and rainy here today, and Chris has an important football game to watch, so we decided it would be a good day to post up in a cafe for a few hours and check in with you all.
Before we left the Hawkes Bay area last week, we stopped in at the famous Hawkes Bay Farmers Market, one of the oldest and largest farmers markets in all of New Zealand. It’s summer here and there are heaps of fresh, organic produce abound, so we wanted to get some fruit and veggies from the source before leaving the area. The market was massive, lined with a large variety of different vendors offering lots of delicious treats for us to sample. We took our time wandering through the different stalls and absorbed the lovely community atmosphere that farmers markets inherently emit. After filling our bag with fresh eggs, vegetables, and a jar of honey, we bought a pastry to share for breakfast and were on our way. Our next destination was Taupo, a lakeside touristy town in the heart of the North Island, where we stayed for a night before heading north to meet up with our friend Arnaud and his partner Markus the following day. The center of the North Island is notorious for its geothermal activity, and thus a multitude of hot springs are scattered throughout the area. Over time, many of the springs were developed around and turned into luxurious day spas that cost an arm and a leg to visit, however a few free spots remain. After arriving in Taupo we decided to check out the free Otumuheke Springs, but when we got there the parking lot was overflowing with cars and people- the thought of sharing the hot spring with a giant crowd suddenly became less appealing. We turned around and decided we’d try our luck another day.
The next morning, we drove an hour north to Rotorua, another cute lakeside town, where we met Arnaud and Markus for a picnic and a quick swim. Arnaud volunteered with us when we lived in Bali, and we hadn’t seen him in years, so it was great to catch up with him and spend a few hours together. Markus has lived in New Zealand for most of his life, and he gave us some tips for a few less-traveled hot springs in Rotorua to check out before we left the area. We stayed overnight in a parking lot in downtown Rotorua, and woke up bright and early the next morning to go whitewater rafting on the Kaituna River! If I’m being honest, I was pretty terrified-I had never been whitewater rafting, and the Kaituna River is known for its level 5 rapids and largest commercially rafted waterfall in the world, a whopping 23 foot drop! We were both really excited for a new adventure though, and it turned out to be one of the most fun excursions we’ve been on in our travels so far. We had a really funny and knowledgeable raft guide, and we shared the raft with two other couples for the hour long ride down the river. The waterfall was definitely scary- the raft became fully vertical and was completely submerged under the water before resurfacing. We didn’t flip over and no one fell out and even though I inhaled a giant mouthful of water, it was fun and thrilling nonetheless.
Our next Great Walk, the Tongariro Northern Circuit, was only a few days away, so we began our journey south back down to Taupo for a couple of nights to restock our supplies of trail mix and granola bars before setting out on the trail. On our way down, we stopped in at Kerosene Creek (one of the hot springs recommended to us by Markus), and were shocked to find that the entirety of the creek was around 100° F. There were other people there, but nothing compared to our first hot spring stop, and having the whole river to swim around in gave us plenty of our own space to enjoy the steaming spring. That night we posted up on a beautiful reserve next to Lake Taupo and watched the sunset over the lake. After having such a wonderful hot spring experience, we decided to wake up early to beat the crowds and give Otumuheke Spring a second shot. The spring was situated alongside a beautiful river, and we were lucky enough to have the first 15 minutes of our time there to soak in the pools completely alone. It was a great way to start our day before prepping for our upcoming trek.
The next morning, we drove an hour and a half to the Whakapapa Visitors Center in Tongariro National Park to begin the 4-day Tongariro Northern Circuit. When we went to the visitors center to check in with the staff and give them our booking information, we had a brief moment of panic when we realized that we were a day late in starting the trek. The campsites and huts on the Great Walks are in very high demand and are usually booked for the whole summer, so we were stressed that we wouldn’t be able to embark on the trek after missing our reservation. Fortunately the Department of Conservation staff at the visitor’s center called ahead to the rangers at the campsites and they were able to make room for us. Relieved and excited to begin, we strapped on our packs and set out on the trail.
Our first day was an easy 6 miles to the Mangatepopo Hut and Campsite. The terrain had a few ups and downs but was relatively flat, and took us through stunning alpine plains shaped by volcanic explosions with volcanos towering over us on either side. We made it to Mangatepopo in a few hours, where we set up camp and had a hearty dinner of couscous, rice, and lentils. After reading our books and playing cards for a bit, we tucked into bed early knowing that the hardest section of the trek was coming the next day. The circuit trail intersects with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a very popular day hike and the main attraction of the revered Great Walk. The trail climbs 2500 feet in 3.6 miles through remnants of lava flow, and winds up a series of steep trail sections aptly named 'Devil’s Staircase’. The peak offers spectacular views of Red Crater and the beautiful Emerald Lakes, drawing hundreds of hikers every day. We began the hike early the next morning, joining the crowds coming in for the day hike, and started the arduous climb to the top. After a couple of hours, we made it up unscathed and stopped for a lunch of trail mix and dried fruit to take it all in. It quickly became clear why so many people embarked on this trek - the landscape was truly magnificent. With panoramic views of the dark red and black Red Crater on one side, and the stark turquoise and blue hues of the Emerald Lakes to the other, we were awed and humbled to be in such a beautiful place. The descent down the other side of the volcano proved to be a bit difficult, as the tread was entirely ash and sand, but we made our way down with only a few stumbles and continued on the circuit trail. Happy to be away from the big crowds, we powered on towards our next campsite, the Oturere Hut.
We made it to the Oturere Hut by 2 pm with 9 miles of hiking under our belts. We still felt pretty energized, and the next hut was only 5 miles away, so we made the decision to stop for a snack and then carry on to catch up with our original campsite reservations. While we were taking a break at the Oturere Hut, the hut ranger informed us with the sad news that just an hour after we had descended from Red Crater, a 75-year-old German man hiking with his son had died at the top due to a heart attack. The Maori tribe that presides over the Tongariro Crossing placed what they call a Rahui over the area, which restricts access to the crossing for 3 days. The Rahui is put in place to acknowledge the person who died and the mourning of their loved ones, and also to allow the spirit of land to recover from the fatality. With a heavy heart, we continued our way on the trail towards our next destination, the Waihohonu Hut and Campsite.
We arrived at Waihohonu after a couple of hours with sore feet and aching backs, feeling exhausted but accomplished after a long 14 mile day. Our campsite bordered a creek, and after setting up our tent we took a refreshing and freezing dip before making dinner. We spent the evening relaxing in the hut, chatting with fellow hikers, and reading our books. In the morning, we were back on the trail by 9:15 am to complete a final 10 mile day back to Whakapapa. I was a little bit grumpy that morning- Chris’ normal hiking pace is more of a light jog for me, and for the first two or so miles Chris was speeding ahead, intent on passing the multiple groups of hikers in front of us. After the first hour and a half I was drained, hungry, and irritable, so we stopped for a snack and some water before carrying on down the path. I was in much better spirits as we hiked through the hummocks and hollows of the final stretch of the circuit, with the striking Mount Ngauruhoe (better known for it’s appearance as Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings) in view the whole way. With only a few miles to go, we stopped at the top of Taranaki Falls for a break, and then completed the final stretch. The Tongariro Circuit was a difficult, rewarding trek and we felt very satisfied, albeit fatigued, to finish it in 3 days. Our first stop post-hike was a hot shower followed by a large pizza - a sequence of events that’s becoming a tradition for us after finishing a Great Walk.
In the days since we finished the crossing, we have been in the coastal city of Whanganui on the central western coast of the North Island. We got lucky with a sunny 75°F day and spent a few hours relaxing in the sun at Kai Iwi Beach. After staying one night in the city, we wanted to get a little more off the beaten path and ventured to a free campsite that was right on the beach about 30 minutes north of the city. We had no expectation of what it would be like, all we knew was that it was right on the coast, but we ended up at one of the most spectacular locations we’ve encountered in New Zealand thus far. Aside from 2 other vans parked down the road, we had a cliffside campsite overlooking the ocean all to ourselves. We ventured down onto the beach, only to be surprised yet again by a completely empty black sand beach lined with incredible cliffs and caves the whole way down. Many of the campsites and beautiful vistas we’ve visited so far have been busy and often crowded by other tourists, so we were excited to find a hidden gem of New Zealand without even trying. Long Beach and Cave Beach were definitely a highlight of our trip so far.
Today we are heading south towards Wellington, and in a few days we will take a ferry from the North Island to begin our adventure in the South Island. Everyone we’ve talked to tells us that the South Island will blow us away, so we are very excited to make our way down there. In 10 days we’ll start our next Great Walk, the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, a gorgeous trek along the northern beaches of the south island!
Lots of love from us both,
Bryn and Christopher

Lake Taik-O’Khata —— ….. The lake levee was constructed in 1954 by building a 600-foot dam and spillway at a cost of $333.34. Several small streams fed by springs soon began to fill the lake, and one year later water flowed out of the spillway. Family members got together and discussed at length a name for their new lake and decided to call it Lake Tiak-O’Khata, which in the Choctaw Indian language means “Lake of the Pines.” Fishing was popular and soon a concession stand stood on the western shore of the lake. A white sand beach for swimming with piers and diving board platforms were added. In 1957, the first cabins were built and 1958 saw the first bunk house to accommodate youth groups; 80 people can now be housed bunk style. In 1960, a giant step was taken when a restaurant which seated 200 was built and soon after was enlarged to seat 500. In 1961, Sylvia White, daughter of Sylvester and Ruby, joined the company. In the early years, family members did not have salaries. Pay was three good meals a day. April 4, 1965 was a dark day for the Smyth family as a fire totally destroyed the restaurant. The fire started around 2 a.m., presumably from faulty wiring in the kitchen area. Although there was a large debt, the family, along with good bankers, got busy and in August of the same year the restaurant building was restored. Business once again flourished! In 1973, Bob Smyth, son of Sylvester & Ruby Smyth, and his wife Vera moved from New Orleans to join the business. Soon after their approval, the first of twenty motel rooms were built. Subsequent building projects gave the property a total of fifty-four motel rooms by 1979. Steve and Carmen White joined the business in 1981. Again building projects were initiated. Honeysuckle Hall, a large meeting/dining facility was added. This was followed by the addition of Pine Ridge Lodge, a meeting/dining hall accommodating 250, with an 80 bed youth camp adjoined. Once again, in 1990, a building program which produced Smyth Hall, added fourteen more motel rooms. Today, lakeside villas and a large recreational vehicle park also dot the landscape. —— For more please, visit https://ltok.com — #mississippi #laketiakokhata (at Louisville, Mississippi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQdACHugtFQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Life in Lockdown
It’s crazy to think of how quickly we adapt to a new normal. Now, it’s normal to actively walk as far away from people you encounter as possible, it’s normal to experience endless queues at the supermarket, it’s normal to wash your hands immediately after entering your house and wipe down any handles you may have touched, it’s normal to feel unmotivated and unproductive, and it’s normal to do almost all of your socializing through video chat.
The question in everyone’s minds is: how long will this be our normal? The answer will be different in every country and could be anywhere from weeks to months. It’s likely that it will be over a year until travel is open and fluid again.
I feel lucky to be in a country that has been taking this virus seriously since the first cases were confirmed here. There is hope that we can start going back to work and travel domestically within a matter of weeks.
Until this week, the weather has been beautiful and sunny in Auckland with a high of 70 F almost every day. This has enabled me to explore the city on foot. So far, I have made it through the cozy tree-lined streets of Grey Lynn, to the peaceful beach in Pt. Chevalier, and to the fowl-filled lake at the aptly named Western Springs Lakeside Park to name a few.
I have found Auckland to be absolutely beautiful and completely underrated. I’m so happy that I’m getting the opportunity to explore this city during these strange times.
On my walks, I am greeted by cute teddy bears cheering me on from their homes. Neighbourhoods around the world have been joining together to create “bear hunts” that kids can participate in to make their walks more exciting. It turns out that kids aren’t the only ones enjoying it!
I wanted to join in on the fun but didn’t have anything cute and fuzzy in my house, so I tested out my new watercolors and painted a teddy bear for our front door.
Every time I see a teddy bear or stuffed animal in someone’s window, it puts a smile on my face and reminds me that this is not forever and we will get through this together.
