Today is the last day of the West Coast Print Fair (link in bio). • • Here we are featuring a selection of Cathie Crawford’s color woodcuts. These poetic, sensuous prints are marked by bright colors in strong, horizontal bands. Crawford’s imagery hovers on the edges of abstraction with associations of landscape, water and other suggestions of the natural world. The prints exude a strong materiality: evidence of her images’ origins in wood is visible in the grain of the matrix transferred in ink to the paper, and in her choice of sumptuous, handmade Japanese papers. In contrast to the delicacy of the paper, Crawford often uses a heavy ink application which imparts textures and glossy surfaces to the finished prints. The radiating/contracting wavy circle in each of the “Iris” prints is situated in a deep ultramarine blue ground, and relates to several phenomena, including the radiating waves on the surface of a fluid disturbed by a droplet; the opening and closing of petaled flowers according to light and heat levels; the concentric markings and activities of the eye. 11”x11”, editions of 20.
