Thanks to everyone who participated in our live Q&A event earlier this week about our 2023 Rhythm Generation Zine, Battle Scars and Kitchen Cabinets.  For fellow fans who were unable to join us, be sure to check out the FAQ linked below and the Q&A transcript below the ‘cutline.’

Q1: Is there a maximum number of contributors to be accepted - both in total and per fanwork type?

Because the zine is a free PDF release, we are only truly limited by the time and energy the Mod Team has available to them to pull it all together. In the past, this means that we have been very fortunate not to have to preemptively limit the number of contributors or the number of contributions (regardless of type). We’re a small fandom, after all. 

That said, over the years we’ve observed both in our and others’ zine projects that a good ‘golden ratio’ appears to be about 10 contributors per Mod, so we would be looking to keep our numbers this year to around 40 participants total, regardless of fanwork type. 

But that’s not a hard and fast number, per se–we’ve always prided ourselves on being able to include anyone and everyone who wanted to join and could do so. One of the foundational principles about this project is that it is one by the fans, for the fans.

Q2a: Are collaborations between creators welcome? 

Yes absolutely!  Fans can either (a) proactively find a partner ahead of applications closing - just make sure you submit your application as a PAIR, or (b) find one after applications close among other contributors selected for the project.

Q2b: Are we allowed to share our ideas in the GW Discord to find collaboration partners?

Technically yes, especially if you keep your ideas to the minimum (@lifeaftermeteor has created a sub-thread under the #gw-zine-scene channel to discuss the 2023 zine specifically).  We don’t want to spoil the surprise, however.  Once you have some interested parties, please take the conversation on details and specifics to the DMs!

Q3: Why did you choose the theme you did?  

Last year, the fandom had brainstormed several zine themes on Discord and the 2021 Mod Team held an interest check to gauge preferences.  This led to the 2021 theme, “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.”  However…this year’s theme, “Battle Scars and Kitchen Cabinets,” was an incredibly close second.  We extrapolated that this would still be a major interest of the fandom, and rolled out accordingly.

Q4: Why did you choose the charity you did (The Hunger Project)?

Since 2020, the Mod Team has crowd sourced what is now quite a collection of stellar charities.  Since then, we have also used the same parameters to choose which charity to go with: 

Charity Navigator score (if the organization was too small for a score, this did not count against them)

Scope and footprint (i.e., was the charity local, national, or international)

Relevance to Gundam Wing (i.e., war & peace, conflict, crisis, science, space)

Relevance to the themes of the zine itself

The theme of this year’s zine on post-conflict issues and cooking led to prioritizing charities which focused on food, family, community, moving on, and conflict.  

The Hunger Project was a logical choice because it seeks to end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women-centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world.  It is a global movement of individuals and organizations in 22 countries worldwide working in authentic partnership for the sustainable end of hunger.

Q5: What content will be accepted for the project this year?

As with past projects, we will take both the usual fanfiction and fanart contributions as well as other fandom work like traditional arts and crafts, gunpla, cosplay, AMVs, playlists, remixes, puzzles, games, and activities. For more on the specific requirements, please refer to our FAQ.

Q6: What is the schedule for the project?

Be sure to check out our schedule for this year, but some key dates to keep in mind: 

January 1-31: application window

February 6-June 1: creation period (with check-ins)

June 1-30: mailing list registration window

July 1: zine transmission

Q7: Have you given any thought as to how the volatility of Twitter might affect how the zine is planned/run?

I'm just going to throw on the following: We are keeping a close eye on Twitter’s rapidly evolving policies–especially regarding treatment of cross-promotion/posting to other platforms.  If Twitter really explodes, we will sit down and think about whether we need to move off of Twitter and on to Mastodon or something similar. A lot of social media engagement depends on where the fandom resides. In GW, there's no real centralized place, so we'll see where things migrate if Twitter shuts down. Right now, we post the same information on all of our social media, so if one goes down the information will be available elsewhere.

Q8: Is there a limit to how many recipes that a contributor can submit?

The limit for fanwork pieces for each person is two, with one of those pieces ideally being in the Main Zine (Battle Scars). Recipes don't have the same hard limits, but we'll apply some common-sense if necessary to spread around the contributions.

Q9: What kind of information is necessary for the application itself?

The basics in terms of where to find you, how you want to be addressed, the ideas that you have for your project, and what kind of ships you have in mind. This last allows us to balance the zine amongst the fandom. We'll also ask for at least one zine-quality example of something else you've worked on, ideally within the parameters if you have something. If selected, you'll need to provide a short bio, and a social media handle so that we can advertise who's taking part in the zine.

Q10: Can I use a previous zine contribution as my writing example for the application?

Yes, absolutely! That's perfect, actually.

Q11: Can I provide a NSFW piece as part of my application?

Yes, you can! Only the final submission for the zine itself has to be SFW. Everyone on the Mod Team is over 18 and can review NSFW material submitted as part of the application. However, we appreciate that if there are AO3-style warnings that apply (graphic violence, etc.) you let us know so that we are prepared for what we're getting into.

Shadows of the Dark Crystal liveblog pt 18

Shadows of the Dark Crystal by J. M. Lee because Naia is headed right for the castle. Like that song. That I saw in an Undertale amv.

Last times on book: Naia was on a journey to Ha’rar to defend her brother Gurjin from a treason charge. Tavra catches up and tells her to go home. Naia disagrees and has a fight with her traveling friend Kylan. Naia goes on to the Crystal Castle and Kylan... does not. =(

Chapter 20

Naia has a truly horrible night in the woods, again. And meets a new friend, again. This is the part of the book where she has bad times in a dark wood and dreamfasts with odd things. This specific part of the book. The weird dreamfasts in the woods section.

Naia trecked between dark-leaved trees with huge barrel-size trunks, and rocks covered in wriggling purple moss studded with hairy polyps. Black-winged scaly things swooped and flapped in the canopy overhead. The purple rocks eventually gave way to lumpier rocks that grumbled and moved as she walked by, shifting away from her and burrowing deeper into the mulch- and leaf-covered forest floor. Naia’s footsteps were loud and harsh as she stomped her way through the brush, although she hardly cared who heard her.

This is some good anger stomping through the woods.

She even breaks a branch off a tree just to snap it into smaller and smaller pieces and throw it away in disgust. Which is relatable behavior. Breaking twigs or folding leaves.

Then it starts raining, to really hammer in the kind of mood Naia is in.

She can’t find shelter so she just keeps stomping in the rain.

Naia briefly wonders about Kylan but decides he’s fine.

He’d made his choice not to come with her. Anyway, by now he was probably halfway back up the falls. Maybe he’d even make it to urVa’s before long - that would be nice for him, safe and warm next to the hearth with a hot cup of ta. Naia, however, would be stranded in the muddy, cold, dark, shadowy forest on account of doing the right thing.

Naia is totally allowed frustration about how nobody will tell her what’s going on but this is some prime self-martyring self-righteous indignation going on. It’s spectacular.

Then Naia grabs a rain-slicked leaf and tumbles down a hill and lands in a mud puddle. Because that’s the kind of day she’s having now.

“Yesmit!” she swore, but even the curse offered little relief.

Gelfling swears!

I wonder where it falls on the scale of swears. Is it ‘you can’t say that on television’ or ‘you can have a couple’? And what does it mean?

Since swearing didn’t help she tries screaming in frustration and crying without knowing exactly why. She’s having that kind of day.

Not the whole day. The start of the day was actually kind of nice. Learning archery and hanging with a cool kook. It goes to show how one bad conversation and some environmental reinforcement can really turn things around.

But she has to keep going forward. If she goes home now, without ever seeing Gurjin, her journey was pointless.

Although I’d argue that even if it wasn’t your intended destination, healing a whole forest is with point.

She’s still sitting in a mud puddle, thinking about how warm the castle probably is, when a baby Nebrie pops out of the mud right underneath her.

“This mud and rain suits you just fine, doesn’t it?” she asked. “Did your mother leave you here while she went to forage? You shouldn’t come up out of the muck for just anyone. It could be dangerous.”

The Nebrie’s mouth opened in a toothless smile. It rolled from left to right, dipping its face back into the mud and blowing bubbles. Naia laughed despite herself, and as she did, the tightness in her chest relaxed.

It speaks to the kind of fantastical, weird and wild world that Thra is that the swamp hippos are actually friendly. Or that goes for large herbivores in Thra generally, I think. They’re generally the pastoral gentle image of herbivores that people have. It stands out on the semi-death world of Thra.

Anyway, awww cute!

Naia tells the baby Nebrie that she feels like she’s only running in circles. I don’t think that the Nebrie understands the words but maybe the tone because it shoves its face under Naia’s arm.

Naia does a dreamfast with the Nebrie and the Nebrie shares a memory of the Mom Nebrie pulling up weeds and feeding them to her babies. In return, Naia sends the memory of her and Gurjin’s shared Name Day.

Her sisters had tied bright ribbons and bells to every one of her locs. The Gerat Sun had been warm that day, and Gurjin had not yet left for his post at the castle. They had stood together before the people of their clan, eager to take on the responsibilities of their blossoming adulthood.

I’m pretty fascinated by Name Day now. Did they only get named on the Name Day, like a homestuck? Its clearly a coming of age celebration but Naia also hasn’t had her wings grow in which is another sign of maturity. When in the Gelfling life is Name Day?

Naia also thinks about the Darkened Nebrie, although she doesn’t let that thought get shared. This weirdly friendly baby is how Nebries should be, not like the gigamax Nebrie who had been driven to rage. Not like the ruffnaw in the burrow or the Cradle-Tree.

Thra was in pain, in sadness, and it originated at the Heart of Thra: at the Castle of the Crystal. Though the castle had not been Naia’s original destination, after all that had happened, it did not seem a coincidence that it would be where she would seek the truth about Gurjin.

Naia makes up her mind to continue and shed light on all these questions her journey as raised.

She leaves the Nebrie in its mud and sets back off. And realizes that she’s well and truly lost Tavra’s trail in all this rain and that at this point she doesn’t even know if she could find the way home.

Then she remembers: oh right, I’m the Naia and I speak for the trees.

She finds one of the Cradle-Tree’s roots (because this tree is truly large. Its the whole dang woods) and dreamfasts with it to ask for directions.

Love this. Love this continued exploration on dreamfasting.

The Cradle-Tree shows her a canopy level view of the woods.

As if she had been lifted by wind, held aloft by the branches of the Cradle-Tree, Naia saw what the tree saw. The Dark Wood was a vast body of green and black, filling the valley formed between two bodies of highlands: the Claw Mountains to the northwest and the Caves of Grot to the northeast. In a clearing to the west, a day’s journey from an elbow of the Black River, was the Castle of the Crystal. Its shining black shape jutted from the flesh of the wood like a clawed hand clutching at clouds.

Gooood imagery.

After the dreamfast ends, Naia hears the sound of a twig snapping and heavy footsteps in the darkness but sees nothing. She feels a presence in the darkness, something familiar... and she wonders aloud if its urVa.

THE HUNTER?! I mean, its gotta be this time. Right?

The presence moves deeper into the shadows away from her.

Naia is perplexed but doesn’t stick around when lightning strikes overhead. Running to try to get to the Castle ahead of the second storm front.

Another short chapter but some good stuff in it!

The 2021 Rhythm Generation Gundam Wing fandom zine—East of the Sun, West of the Moon—will feature canon-compliant, canon-divergent, and alternative universe explorations and retellings of classic fairytales, folklore, mythology, vast epics, urban legends, and even cryptids. The anthology will include a wide variety of both SFW and NSFW fan content—to include stories, art, and other fanwork—and will be released as a FREE PDF. We’re therefore casting a wide net with our content categories:

Written work (fanfic, meta, worldbuilding)

Visual work (fanart, mood boards, aesthetic sets)

Other fandom content (cosplay, gunpla, traditional crafts, fan soundtracks, AMVs)

Activities, puzzles, and games

Some general parameters are as follows: 

Canon-compliant, canon-divergent, and alternative universe content are accepted

East of the Sun is for general audiences and will be SFW; West of the Moon will be 18+

All ships are welcome, but so too is general / non-shippy content

All content will be original to the zine 

All content will be embargoed until its release on October 1, 2021

Applications will open March 1, 2021.  Sign-ups to receive the zine will open May 1, 2021.
