do you think he went back to a photoless apartment after cameron?
First of all, how dare you,
-
"What do you think of this?" Cameron asks thoughtfully, picking up a decorative pillow from a staged living room.
The pillow is beige and uninteresting. "It's nice," Chase lies. She glares and he raises his eyebrows. "What am I supposed to say? It looks like a pillow."
Cameron puts it back on the couch. Chase is no stranger to IKEA, but when he's come here before, he'd beelined for the warehouse section and gone home. It's kind of fun to look through the fake apartments in the show room, but Cameron keeps getting distracted by the most boring crap.
Cameron grabs some pillowcases from a bin and tosses them into their little cart. "Your apartment sucks."
"It does not," he protests, knocking the cart lightly into her side. It doesn't. It can't, because she's moving in — which is exciting, even thrilling, and also terrifying. Cameron's idea, of course. All else aside, his apartment was bigger. When she'd suggested they buy decor together, make it feel like ours, he knew it was mostly her excuse to get rid of his old posters and some of his rattier furniture, but… Ours.
Like she meant it. Like she was absolutely serious and wanted to be with him. For real. So obviously he'd agreed. All the decor she wants. Throw out all his furniture if she wants, he doesn't care —
But all these throw pillows really do just look exactly the same.
They — Cameron — pick out some more pillows. Some knick-knacks, a blanket, new curtains, tablecloths, some art prints so abstract they're essentially just streaks of color, and candles. In the live plant section Cameron finds some potted palms and ferns; Chase finds some sweets in the food shop and eats them as he watches. They load up his car and she drags him to the West Elm shop in the mall next, for more expensive art prints and bedding and still more pillows.
-
Cameron is working three days on, three days off right now, so for the next week he keeps coming home to a different apartment: pillows everywhere, curtains hung, new dishes and silverwear and bedding. Flowers appear in planterboxes for the first time. New books crowd the shelves. Ridiculous as it all is, it is pretty nice, and maybe she does have a point that it's cozier. "If you wait until this weekend, I could actually help you," he points out one evening.
"I don't mind," she says cagily, coming back to the sofa with wine (in new glasses. That look exactly like his old wine glasses, but she insists are better.)
"You don't mind, or you think I'd mess it up?" he asks, and Cameron grins mischievously, and he almost ruins all her fancy new pillows when he pulls her closer for a kiss, wine glass and all.
The photos appear last of all. Cameron's diplomas framed on the walls, a family picture on one of the nightstands, another in the living room. On her urging, Chase digs out the half dozen photos he'd brought to the States with him when he'd moved: she picks through them carefully and he watches anxiously, waiting for her approval. One is of him and his mum when he was eight and she was sober, her arms around his shoulders as they both beam: Cameron has it framed and puts it next to her family photo on the living room table.
Last are glossy photos pinned to the fridge. In one he's wearing sunglasses and she's laughing. In another they're posing a bit too formally, self conscious and childish. A photobooth strip that starts serious and dissolves into silliness. A candid of him he doesn't recognize at all that makes him worry he always looks that serious: a picture of Cameron looking self conscious and grinning at the beach. He stands in front of the fridge for quite a while, taking it in. He hadn't known they had so many pictures.
-
The door closes behind her. He can hear the sound of her suitcase as it recedes down the hall. He is waiting to feel -- something. Anything. Finally he thinks he should drink a glass of water, not because he is thirsty but because it is something to do.
There are photos on the fridge, and pillows on the couch, and a box of unsorted wedding photos on the coffee table. Chase drinks cheap scotch and stares into space and eventually crawls into a bed made up with still more useless pillows.
She eventually sends for her diplomas and family photos. It takes him weeks to throw out the rest.

DIY Paper Coral Charm Peony
When West Elm Seattle asked me to design a paper flower workshop for February 13th — the day before Valentine’s Day — I immediately thought of Leslie Knope’s Galentine’s Day celebrations on Parks and Recreation. I loved the idea of creating a fun event to celebrate female friendship, and no flower seemed like a more fitting mascot for Galentine’s Day than the coral charm peony. It’s big, bold, bright, and stylish. It’s everything that sad grocery store roses are not.
I brought candy, gals brought pals, and we had a blast.
Project by Kate Alarcón:
In the interest of keeping the Galentine’s Day spirit alive year-round, I offer this tutorial. Order up some crepe paper from the wonderful Castle In the Air, invite some gals (and guys!) over, and whip up some peonies. (If you’d like to send one to a friend, but are more a paper flower admirer than a paper flower maker, I also have some finished flowers available in my shop.)
Finally, on the subject of wonderful gals: I’d like to give a shout-out to the very talented Natalie Lynne, who was the first flower maker I ever saw create a peony seed pod in this way. Check out her beautiful work on Instagram (@a_bloom_time)! —Kate Alarcón
A Note about the paper:
This peony is made up of layers of different weights and colors of crepe paper. The heavy crepe gives it most of its structure, while the fine and doublette crepe help it to look more delicate. If you’d like to try different weights and colors of crepe, don’t worry about layering them in exactly the same order. But some combination of heavier and lighter crepe will help to recreate the structure and texture of these. With the exception of the moss green from Papermart, I’ve used the color names from Castle in the Air to make ordering easier.
You will need:
-Fine crepe (30-60 gram) in corals and reds for the petals, and orange or yellow for the stamens. I’ve used “Raspberry,” “Red,” and “Orange” from Castle in the Air.
-Heavy crepe (160 or 180 gram) in corals, reds, and pinks. I’ve used: “Peachy Pink,” “Candy Apple,” “Pink Pansy,” and “Burgundy” from Castle in the Air, and “Moss Green” from Papermart.
-Doublette crepe in “Light/Dark Salmon”
-Aleene’s original tacky glue
-Stem wire (18 gauge, cloth covered)
-Template (download here)
A note about grain:
The grain of the crepe paper runs parallel to the roll or fold. Crepe paper stretches horizontally, but not vertically, so you will almost always cut petals with the grain, placing the template so that the tiny wrinkles in the paper run up and down the template, not across.
Creating the center:
Use template 1 to cut a small rectangle from the red fine crepe. Use your scissors to round the upper corners so they aren’t too sharp. Gently stretch the top edge of the rectangle. Dot a very small amount of glue on the lower two thirds of the rectangle, wrap it loosely around the stem wire so that the top third extends beyond the tip of the wire, and then scrunch the lower two thirds closely to the wire.
Cut a ¼” strip 10” long across the grain of your green crepe. I’ve used “Moss Green” from Paper Mart, but any medium green would be fine. Dab small dots of glue down the strip and attach it to the top of the wire, on top of the coral rectangle. You’ll wrap this piece around the wire to create an elongated ovoid shape. To achieve this, you’ll need to wrap the strip up and down the top inch of the wire, making sure that more of the layers end up in the middle.
Start wrapping from the top, holding the strip at a 45-degree angle to the wire. When you’ve covered about an inch and a half of the tip of the wire, start wrapping back toward the tip of the wire, again holding the strip at a 45-degree angle to the wire. When you reach the midpoint of the section of the wire you wrapped on the way down, hold the strip at a 90-degree angle and wrap the middle several times, creating a kind of doughnut around the mid point. Once you’ve got a nice, thick middle, continue wrapping toward the tip of the wire. Make one more pass up and down the pod to create a fairly smooth covering for your pod. This time, you don’t need to stop to thicken the middle. Snip any extra strip. Spread out the pod frill so that it’s not too compressed.
Repeat to create 2 more seedpods.
Cut a ¼” x 10” strip across the grain of the green crepe and dot with glue. Hold the three stems together using the strip to wrap them tightly from just below the pods to about three inches down the wire.
Stamens:
Using template 2, cut a rectangle from orange or yellow fine crepe. The short sides of the rectangle should run parallel to the grain of the paper, while the long side of the rectangle will go across the grain. Fold your orange rectangle in half horizontally, so that the two long ends line up. Unfold. This crease in your unfolded rectangle marks how far down to cut the fringe.
Now you’ll fold the rectangle in the opposite direction twice to create four layers, so that it takes fewer cuts to make the fringe. Fold it vertically so that the two shorter ends line up. Fold in half again, so that the two short ends line up with second fold. Your grain lines should be parallel to the folds.
Make a series of parallel cuts (about 1/8th inch apart) across the top edge of the rectangle to create a fringe. The cuts should stop at the crease you made when you first folded and unfolded your rectangle (this line is also marked on the template). Working in sections, gently twist the fringe in one direction, untwist and gently straighten with your fingers. Its fine if a few of the stamens fall off in the process.
Unfold the rectangle, and dot glue along the bottom edge beneath your fringe cuts. Wrap the fringe loosely around the stem twice so that the bottom of your cuts is just below the seedpods. Snip off any excess. Scrunch to adhere the paper tightly around the stem.
Cutting the petals:
The peony is made up of five rows or rounds of petals that radiate out from the center. The petals in each row are a different color and shape. The first and last rows are heavy crepe, which will stretch out much more than the lighter weights, so these templates are narrower.
For each row, I’ve listed which template to use, which paper to use, and how many you’ll need to cut to complete the row. Then, once you’ve made it all the way around, you’ll move to the instructions for the next row.
If you choose different paper for a variation of this peony, just be sure to match the heavy crepe templates with the heavy crepe.
Optional: I’ve found that substituting a bright bluish pink petal in heavy crepe (such as “Pink Pansy”) adds a nice highlight amongst all the coral. I use template 5 and make two of these pink petals. I like to insert one in rows 2 and 3, fairly close to each other. You’ll still want the same total number of petals for that row, so you’ll be substituting a petal, rather than adding an extra.
Row 1: template 3, 6 petals of light coral heavy crepe (“Peachy Pink”) Row 2: template 4, 6 petals of coral fine crepe (“Raspberry”) Row 3: template 4, 6 petals of doublette crepe (“Light/Dark Salmon”) Row 4: template 4, 7 petals of red fine crepe (“Red”) Row 5: template 6, 8 petals of dark pink heavy crepe (“Candy Apple”)
A petal from each layer before and after shaping.
Shaping the petals:
To create the cupped shape of the peony petals, hold the center of the upper third of the petal with two hands, between your thumbs and sides of your index fingers. The goal is to stretch the inner part of the petal, while leaving the rounded outer edge unstretched to create a little bowl. For the petals that are lobed, or heart-shaped, cup each lobe and then the area under the lobes. The fine crepe will only cup slightly, while the heavy crepe will give you the nice, dramatic cups that give the flower its structure.
Attaching the petals:
Dot glue along the bottom of the petal and apply just below the seedpod.
You’ll be able to feel the ridge where the pods end and the wire begins. Always push up into that ridge when you’re applying petals; this will counteract the tendency for the petals to gradually drift down the wire, creating a cone shape. Apply the petals evenly in rounds around the center. The precise degree of overlap is less important than having them evenly distributed around the flower.
The calyx:
Use template 7 to cut three shorter calyx pieces and template 8 to cut three longer calyx pieces from the “Burgundy” heavy crepe. Apply the shorter pieces evenly around the base of your peony, just as you did the petals. Apply the longer pieces so that they fall between the shorter pieces.
Wrapping the stem:
Cut a “Burgundy” ¼” x 12” strip across the grain and dot glue up and down the strip. Wrap the stems, covering the bottoms of the calyx, just underneath where the seedpods meet the wire, and then all the way to the bottom of the stems. This may require a few strips.
Finishing touches:
Curl back the long pieces of the calyx by scraping them between your thumb and the blade of your scissors, as though you were curling ribbon. Gently spread out any seed pod frills that have been compressed, and arrange the fringe so that it’s all standing up and evenly spaced. Straighten any petals that have been mussed, and use your thumbs to reshape any petals whose cups have been collapsed.
If you’d like a looser peony, stick your fingers between the first two layers down to where the petals meets the seedpods and gently spread, working your way all the way around the flower. Repeat for each layer.

I finally got to the end of “Wednesday,” the first present-day section of Good Omens. It just keeps going and going and going, and I for one still wasn’t ready for it to be over. It’s also the end of what I’d previously read years ago, so everything coming up book-specific is new to me. How exciting is that?
No deep thoughts, I’m afraid, except as someone who was just on the cusp of political awareness around the time it was published .... this section is truly hilarious.
A man threw himself through the window, a knife between his teeth, a Kalashnikov automatic rifle in one hand, a grenade in the other.
"I glaim gis oteg id der gaing og der-" he paused. He took the knife out of his mouth and began again. "I claim this hotel in the name of the pro-Turkish Liberation Faction!"
The last two holidaymakers remaining on the island [Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Threlfall, of 9, The Elms, Paignton. They always maintained that one of the nice things about going on holiday was not having to read the newspapers or listen to the news, just getting away from it all really. And due to a tummy bug contracted by Mr. Threlfall, and Mrs. Threlfall rather overdoing it in the sun their first day, this was their first time out of their hotel room for a week and a half.] climbed underneath their table. Red unconcernedly withdrew the maraschino cherry from her drink, put it to her scarlet lips, and sucked it slowly off its stick in a way that made several men in the room break into a cold sweat.
The pianist stood up, reached into his piano, and pulled out a vintage sub-machine gun. "This hotel has already been claimed by the pro-Greek Territorial Brigade!" he screamed. "Make one false move, and I shoot out your living daylight!"
There was a motion at the door. A huge, black-bearded individual with a golden smile and a genuine antique Gatling gun stood there, with a cohort of equally huge although less impressively armed men behind him.
"This strategically important hotel, for years a symbol of the fascist imperialist Turko-Greek running dog tourist trade, is now the property of the Italo-Maltese Freedom Fighters!" he boomed affably. "Now we kill everybody!"
"Rubbish!" said the pianist. "Is not strategically important. Just has extremely well-stocked wine cellar!"
"He's right, Pedro," said the man with the Kalashnikov, "That's why my lot wanted it. 11 General Ernesto de Montoya said to me, he said, Fernando, the war'll be over by Saturday, and the lads'll be wanting a good time. Pop down to the Hotel de Palomar del Sol and claim it as booty, will you?"
The bearded man turned red. "Is bloddy important strategically, Fernando Chianti! I drew big map of the island and is right in the middle, which makes it pretty bloddy strategically important, I can tell you."
"Ha!" said Fernando. "You might as well say that just because Little Diego's house has a view of the decadent capitalist topless private beach, that it's strategically important!"
The pianist blushed a deep red. "Our lot got that this morning," he admitted. There was silence.
In the silence was a faint, silken rasping. Red had uncrossed her legs.
The pianist's Adam's apple bobbed up and down. "Well, it's pretty strategically important," he managed, trying to ignore the woman on the bar stool. "I mean, if someone landed a submarine on it, you'd want to be somewhere you could see it all."
Silence.
"Well, it's a lot more strategically important than this hotel anyway," he finished.
Pedro coughed, ominously. "The next person who says anything. Anything at all. Is dead." He grinned. Hefted his gun. "Right. Now everyone against far wall."
I don’t know if this was the standard experience of the tail-end of the Cold War, from someone who was just shy of 10 at the time. My family was first-generation America and still very European in a lot of ways, and not all of us living west of the Iron Curtain; so we probably talked more about the splintering of communism than a lot of Americans did. I think I was the only kid in 2nd grade who knew what the Polish Solidarity movement was, let alone had a definite opinion on it. Still: I still can’t help but smile at references to the Italo-Maltese Freedom Fighters.
Maybe you just had to be there. Or be me. Or something. But this is peak humor, I’m telling you.
I’m also really fascinated by this description of the sword War will carry as one of the Four Riders:
It was a very straightforward sword, long and sharp; it looked both old and unused; and it had nothing ornamental or impressive about it. This was no magical sword, no mystic weapon of power and might. It was very obviously a sword created to slice, chop, cut, preferably kill, but, failing that, irreparably maim, a very large number of people indeed. It had an indefinable aura of hatred and menace.
So not Excalibur, or Anduril; not steeped in metaphor and symbolism, but a sword ready to get shit done. And for all that there’s no real detail beyond its efficacy at causing destruction. And that it’s not been used. It is storied; it’s relevant here because of its role in a story, and it’s symbolic of the moment somehow. It’s not been used; it’s been waiting for this. But it’s also distinctly real.
I don’t know. I don’t feel like I’m explaining it very well. But it’s still fascinating to me.
Finally, I got curious about Carmine Zuigiber, the identity War is using around the time of this incident. It’s such an odd one. Some baby name sites connect Carmine to an Aramaic word for “crimson,” others to “garden” or “vine-dresser” which has some lovely Garden of Eden connections. But for the last name, I stumbled across this gem on Twitter:
That’s a real-life Carmine Zuigiber (named after the character) saying the name in the name originated with a typo. But because of the way Twitter loaded the page, it looked like Mr. Gaiman’s response to another tweet (this one of Carmine sharing a very red Coraline doll) was actually commenting on the below bits. Not affirming it, not saying they’re factually correct, but just that he thought the idea was wonderful. And all of it hinging on my not getting Twitter. Shades of members of a certain chattering order winking at each other, that. I love it.
You know what else I love? I googled some more, and it turns out Zingiber is the plants whose roots are turned into ginger. That’s right; Red’s chosen name is Crimson Ginger. Shades of Legolas Greenleaf. I do believe I’m in love.

2024 Furniture Trends: What to Buy and Where to Buy
Hey furniture hunters! The 2024 furniture scene is shaking things up big time, just like the fast fashion industry. Forget Mango, Zara, or Shein—this year, it’s all about Wayfair, Amazon, Overstock, and Temu. If you love trendy, affordable pieces, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into what’s hot this year and where to snag the best deals!
What's Hot in 2024?
2024 started slow for furniture, but some styles are flying off the shelves. The Japandy trend is the star—think big, comfy Japandy sofas, tables, coffee tables, beds, and dressers. This Japanese-Scandinavian fusion is all about minimalism and function. Wayfair furniture deals 2024 are full of these chic pieces.
Trendy Colors to Watch
This year, it’s all about warm, earthy tones. Japandy colors are calming, with soft edges and a mix of Mid-Century Modern vibes and minimalist comfort. Look for ivory, light grey, mocha, light brown boucle fabric, dark green, and olive green velvet. Mustard and burnt orange velvet are also trending for living rooms and bedrooms. Linen and performance fabrics in cream, ivory, light pink, olive green, and teal are hot, especially for commercial spaces. Check out Amazon furniture trends 2024 for these colors.
Best-Selling Furniture Styles
Affordable but stylish items are the big winners. Japandy and Mid-Century Modern designs are topping the charts, while bulky traditional furniture is out. Modern motion upholstery sofas, sectionals, and power recliner chairs are all the rage, especially for small spaces. Japandy U-shaped and L-shaped corners are perfect for larger living rooms. If you’re looking for affordable furniture 2024, these styles offer great value.
Industry Outlook for 2024
The year started slow, but affordable options from Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, and Temu are leading the pack. Traditional stores like Ikea, Ashley Furniture, Rooms to Go, Living Spaces, and Bob’s Discount Furniture are losing ground to these online giants. High-quality brands like CB2, West Elm, Crate and Barrel, Anthropologie, All Modern, Article, Mid in Mod, and Rove Concepts are still holding strong, thanks to their quality and personalized shopping experiences.
Where to Shop in 2024
For trendy, affordable pieces, check out Wayfair, Amazon, Overstock, and Temu. They’ve got a wide range of styles and prices. For those who want quality and great service, hit up CB2, West Elm, Crate and Barrel, Anthropologie, All Modern, Article, Mid in Mod, and Rove Concepts. These are some of the best online furniture stores 2024.
As you shop in 2024, stay on top of trends and find pieces that mix style, quality, and affordability. Look out for pet-friendly furniture 2024 and power recliner chairs 2024 to keep your home both stylish and comfy. Happy shopping!
