I don’t even mind all the sans-focused AUs and multiverse stuff and some sanscest (certain ships are 😬 and fontcest was a huge yikes but like in general), I think some of it is still really neat and creative and I loved it as a kid so I have a soft spot for it.
But GOD does it have to be so damn prevalent??? When I search “Undertale” it’d be nice if more than 50% of the results were about the actual game and not some AU of an AU I know nothing about :| there’s just so much of it even now, not to mention how watered down or simplified a lot of AUs have become as opposed to their original versions (how do canon vs fanon comparisons end up applying so strongly to FAN MADE AUs???)
Mood. I was doing research on Underfell for a project once, and it's actually so good! Like, Alphys and Undyne get MARRIED FOR FUCKS SAKE! Asgore is a really threatening villain! The creator has a self insert boss fight in genocide! FLOWEY HAS A BOXCUTTER! It's incredible!
But nooo. Edgy Sans and abusive brother. No one else exists in this universe. Oh wait, now theres a mulitiversal war :/

currently having a morality debate with myself about the marauders
because on one hand, they're shown pantsing snape in the courtyard, and pantsing is usually classified as simple assult.
but most interactions with the young marauders are told from snape's perspective, and therefore biased
and there was never any interactions of when james matured and (hopefully) stopped bullying.
remus and sirius are another matter. sirius was stuck in basically solitary confinement for 12 years. he wasn't given an opportunity to mature fully, although I belive that during his last 2 years of school, and the years after that, he was able to mature somewhat. remus was given the opportunity to mature, but there was almost no direct interactions between remus and snape (who was their main target) during their school years (im leaving out the werewolf incident because remus was not at fault for that)
the snapedom's main argument is that the marauders were bullies (thats true), and that james dying to try and save lily didnt make him a good person. (personally, I believe that sacrificing yourself to save another is a good deed, but it doesnt erase everything else he's done)
the snaters point out that snape joined the wizarding nazis, and bullied children. (both of those are true) they hold the belief that since James sacrificed himself, he was a good person.
but there's a lot of grey area.
firstly, the marauders' and snape's 5th year is really the last interaction the reader sees until Halloween 1981.
secondly, pantsing falls into that grey area of assault (the pantsing scene was in chapter 32 of the deathly hallows) pantsing someone can be seen as sexual assault or simple assault. (i think that because that scene took place in the 70s, and that it was between 2 boys, that it would have been swept under the rug, marking it as "boys will be boys" which does NOT make it okay in any form)
thirdly, most of the snapedom and snaters feel like lily is a good person. and this is where the trope of 'nice girl falls in love with an asshole' comes in. but given lily's strong sense of morals, I think the james would first have had to mature into someone that lily would want to marry.
furthermore, snape joining the death eaters was a direct result of the propaganda in the slytherin common room, the bullying he faced, and the notion that everyone already believed that he would join voldemort. (thats the 'they're already punishing me (bullying) because they think its what I'll do, so might as well mindset) in no way does that make him innocent from any of the bad deeds he's done as a death eater.
but he also turned into a spy for dumbledore. (as a result of his actions putting lily at risk, i know) if we want to say that james is a good person based on his sacrifice for lily, then we should say that snape was a relatively okay person for switching sides because of lily.
I like the idea that snape's unique position as a spy was the reason that he 'bullied' his students (i use that term lightly, because a lot of his interactions with his students are similar to my interactions with my 10th grade chemistry teacher). because he was still technically a death eater spy, he had to be cold towards muggleborn students and children of the order, while holding up children of death eaters, to preserve his position in voldemort's inner circle. I think that if he survived, his attitude towards students would improve (not greatly, because he teaches potions, which can be dangerous, and there's really no room to joke around, or be anything less than focused on the task.)
TL;DR theres not enough interactions to condem the marauders during their school days. both sides had (a lot) of faults, and grew past them. all of the characters in the series are morally grey, and a lot of people use fanon, biased canon, and canon taken out of context to support their claims.
I have decided to stay neutral in regards to the marauders.
disclaimer: all of my knowledge comes from other tumblr posts, the sparksnotes for the hp series, my reading of the series a few years back, and the movies. this is mostly just me putting my thoughts into the world, and I don't want anybody to feel forced to think the way I do. please don't start wars in the replies.
