I haven't even finished rereading the first book so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about but I feel like half the problems with the saga of seven suns have to do with the fact that it's split across an incredibly wide but shallow set of povs, Which sucks because that is also the best part of the series!!

I love getting multiple views on events, looking thru the eyes of characters who aren't going to be relevant in 20 pages, seeing the convoluted political stuff from all sides, and like so much more but the fact the story is SO big yet spread SO thin makes it shallow in a really disappointing way. You could make a whole seven book series out of JUST Raymond and Basil, or JUST the Ildiran stuff or JUST Margaret and co or Rlinda. I want the spacefaring gourmand adventures of Rlinda Kett so bad. Instead you get these little glimpses and altogether these glimpses do make up a really complex and exciting story, and I wouldn't even want to cut it down much because how far it sprawls is a huge part of the appeal.

But! At least this means we don't have to spend chapters and chapters with like, General Lanyan or whoever.

There'd be a big fat green larva squirming about in the mans kitchen, eating up crumbs and other random bits of food.

Sleep had yet to find the fallen watcher when a sharp scream pierced the still night. Renwyck lept from his bed, neglecting the need for boots in favor of a hasty egress. Sword in hand, he dashed down to the tavern below. Perched upon a table, Bartender Wental stared at Renwyck with panicked, wide eyes as he jut out a trembling finger in the direction of the kitchen. Without a word, the fallen watcher burst into the fray.

“... Huh,” was Renwyck's reaction, the confused warrior pausing to scratch at his scalp. The click of a gun being cocked heralded Innkeeper Brianna's entrance,  the woman pausing as the intruder came into view.

“Huh,” she mimicked Renwyck's response. The pair watched the squirming larva greedily munching on the dregs of last night's fare, slurps and contented coos emanating from the writhing beast. Brianna lowered her rifle, turning to Renwyck to ask, “you got this or should I shoot it?”

The fallen watcher shook his head, his eyes not leaving the larva. “No need to waste the bullet. I got it.”

“Right. I'll get my bartender off the table then.”

Still quite dumbfounded, Renwyck's fingers wrapped firmly around the hilt of his greatsword. “Yanno,” he started as he took a step toward the larva. “It's kinda cute in a ‘slimy, disgusting, gunna likely turn into a huge bug and try to eat us’ kinda way.”

“Kill it!” Wental cried from inside the tavern. “Kill it with fire!”

Home, sweet home.

   “Mother fucker ...!”

   Those were the first words coming out of Jake’s mouth in a snarl as Lala and him appeared in the middle of the Inn, pain from the injuries he received in the past three nights and two days shooting through his body with unexpected intensity. Whatever went wrong with the portal this time - the two of them were now on the floor, hissing in pain and gasping for breath, their wounds bleeding anew, red drops staining the stone floor.

   Gloria rushed out of the kitchen, gasping at the sight and called for Sherman to help her, Wental running up as well as the three of them helped Lala and Jake up the stairs, putting them into beds in one of the rooms that was empty right now, Gloria then running back down and returning with medical supplies, not asking any questions just yet as she tended to their injuries.

   “We SO takin’ a fuckin’ horse-cart or somethin’ next time...” - Jake managed a chuckle as he turned his head to look at Av’laa who grinned in return and agreed.

   As Jake laid back, letting the Inn staff treat his bleeding wounds, he hoped noone would make comments on one of said injuries, Namely an arrow wound in his left ass-cheek. Images of the past days and nights flashed through his mind, fresh and vivid, and even the troubles Lala and him went through brought a smile to his lips. It was a true bonding experience, as it was meant to be. They pulled through by working together, tending to one another, overcoming difficulties as a couple from the moment they stepped through the portal and appeared on a small island in Sholazar Basin. First impression Jake had of the place was, as he put it “Hot as balls out here, fuck’s sakes...”. As the following days would show - heat and humidity would be the least of their worries as danger lurked around every corner, and presented itself quite soon. The first night however at least was uneventful for the most part as the two of them gathered some firewood and Lala called upon the Elements to provide a shelter, the rock shifting to form a cave in the side of the cliff they climbed onto. Wild life was all around them in the jungle, roars of animals Jake didn’t even know the names of filling the night, heavy rain pelting the ground as bolts of lightning tore through the dark skies. But inside the cave, even with all that surrounding it, it was dry and warm as the fire took up. They didn’t talk much the first night, only settling in for the night after eating what little food they brought with them. Jake took the first watch as the woman slipped into the sleeping bag she brought for them, falling asleep quickly as she always did, once again making Jake wonder just how she always managed to pass out within minutes no matter where she laid her head. Cave, bare ground, a chair, a bed, it didn’t seem to matter to her in the slightest.

Jake stuffed the rest of the food in his mouth, wiping his hands on his pants and tossed the bones into the fire so they would burn off and not attract any animals with the smell, looking over the sleeping woman as a smile crept onto his face without even him realizing it. He was happy. It didn't matter that outside it was raining cats and dogs. Didn't matter that they were out in the middle of some place he had never even heard of, huddled in a small cave. He was with the woman he had grown very fond of in a very short period of time and he was happy. “I love you...” - he whispered gently, not wanting to wake Av’laa up.

   The woman stirred a little in her sleep, her head rising for just a moment as she smiled and laid back down with a smile on her lips, resuming her light snoring. Outside the rain continued to fall throughout the night, drumming on the ground a lullaby for the two of them...
