GOOD NEWS!! Shark conservationists are hopeful that The Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (H.R. 737) will be approved this year. On March 26, 2019, Linda McCaul, wife of congressman Michael McCaul, testified in Congress in support of this bill which would stop the import and export of shark fins in the US at a federal level. McCaul states that the current state-by-state approach of forbidding shark fin trading is creating too many loopholes and believes that a federal law is necessary to protect sharks. With a master’s degree in oceanography and an extensive history in shark conservation, McCaul informed lawmakers on the unsustainable rate at which sharks are being killed and why shark populations are so important to our oceans, us, and our economy. With political leaders who understand the importance of ocean conservation, we can be hopeful of a future where marine life has greater protection. #Repost from our great friends at @teamsharkwater @download.ins --- Celebrate Shark Awareness Day July 14 2020 by saving our sharks! Rob Stewart, Activist and award-winning Sharkwater filmmaker talks about saving sharks, as they are the most badass creatures the planet has ever seen. They are guardians of our oceans and manage every creature that lives in the ocean today…..keeping coral reefs safe, and plants from being overgrazed by sea life. Sharks protect our oceans. We need sharks for ocean health. Oceans give us 70% of our oxygen, absorb carbon that causes global warming, absorbs our excess heat and feeds a billion of us humans…and to top it off, they make millions in shark tourism annually. Yet, we kill up to 150 million of them every year. We all can be heroes and make the world a better place. Save the Sharks. Watch filmmaker Rob Stewart explain why we need sharks as a keystone species. @Regrann from @dp4k.m - A pair of dead sharks seemingly agape at the fate they ended up with. Man has created a monster he once feared, Himself. This photograph was taken by Hotli Simanjuntak and shared to us by my good friend Kimberly Nicole Forssander @respectanimalrights - As Many as 11,000 Sharks Are Killed by Humans Every Hour. As scary shark attacks might be, the numbers show that sharks populations are the ones really at risk. Around 97 million sharks died because of human activity in 2010, according to research by Boris Worm, a professor and marine ecologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He said that the number of sharks killed each year tends to be around 100 million, which means that around 11,000 sharks die each hour. We’re so stoked that we had the opportunity to take pro surfer @kellyslater and his daughter, @taylrsltr, swimming cage-free with sharks 🦈💙 Thank you for coming out with us! Stunning photos of their experience from our co-founder, @juansharks. ・・・ 1st photo is @oceanramsey and  @kellyslater diving with us @oneoceandiving  Kelly came out with his daughter @taylrsltr and @gregstoneocean as apart of a ocean conservation pod cast, coming soon.  The sharks were a bit shy this day, hanging out around 50ft which did not stop Kelly from enjoying some bottom time with them.  It was a huge honor to share a dive with the  11x world champ of 🏄and his talent in water goes past surfing, some of Kelly’s breath holds had me struggling to stay down with him.  Means a lot to me to see surfers sharing the ocean with sharks, understanding how important sharks are to Heath of the reef and the oceans ecosystem.  You could tell Kelly was very comfortable and respectful with the animals.  Hoping to get him out again in August with one of our big tiger sharks along with past one ocean diving surfing legends @clarklittle @thomasvictorcarroll @anthony_walsh_ @shanedorian @mikecoots and @healeywaterops all in the water at the same dive.  That would be an epic event. #letsmakeithappen #coexist #ApexPredatorNotMonster #oneocean #weneedsharks #savingjaws #helpsavesharks (at Haleiwa, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BseF8Nch3l-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=z53kjd6vnul5

Shark whisperer @juansharks embracing the love coming head on from one of our favorites, #Moana 🦈 Encounters like this are made possible due to education and understanding as well as mutual respect. Our crew is never naive to the fact that these creatures are in fact apex predators and wild animals, however with strong backgrounds/knowledge of shark behavior we are able to #coexist peacefully! 😌 ・・・ This is what happens when @oceanramsey takes my @aquatech_imagingsolutions camera housing away from me. #Moana the tiger shark looking for her opportunity for a hug from me. I didn’t want to make #Nikki the tiger shark mad so I had to decline on the second photo.  All fun aside, Moana was just curiously coming in close and I’m just using my hands to keep a little space between us. Would she have gone for a bite, in my mind the answer is no way.  However, sharks in the end are wild animals and need to be respect as an apex predator but are not the monsters that traditional media wants us to believe.  With a little bit of shark behavior knowledge, humans can share the ocean like Hawaiians have for generations.  To learn more about Hawaiian cultural connections to sharks and the ocean check out @oneoceanhawaii and to get to know sharks on a personal level come dive with me and the team @oneoceandiving in Hawaii.  #ApexPredatorsNotMonster #cagethefear #coexist #weneedsharks #savingsharks is #savinghumans #savingjaws #savingjawsmovie #oneocean #onechance #helpsavesharks https://www.instagram.com/p/BnC2NMphoJq/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=13cjda40b1cnu

It’s always been said not to judge a book by its cover. Well the same saying is applicable toward sharks — just because they may looks scary (to you) doesn’t mean they really are. And just because they have the capability to cause harm doesn’t mean they will, or even want to. On the other hand humans may look simple, or even innocent in our physical makeup, however are capable of wiping out entire species. Who should be the scared one? #Repost from @oneoceanglobal ambassador @maestro320v ・・・ "When The Tank Came To Play" Lasting images like this from last year should make people understand that these much maligned earthlings are not the blood thirsty, human devouring creatures most of us grew to know. 😻💜 Posted @withregram • @juansharks Ali’i Nikki, I have know this exact tiger shark for almost 2 decades and every time I get to see her it feels like I’m diving with ohana. Tiger sharks are not actively hunting humans, they are powerful animals, but prefer dead and sick prey items. The problem is humans are not naturally efficient in the water and with out fins, masks, and awareness we look like injured animals. @oneoceandiving we are trying to educate people on how to share the ocean with these important apex predator. If you want to learn more and can’t join us for a dive check out the free educational videos oceanramsey.com #ohana #shark #tigershark #sharkidnikki #helpsavesharks #apexpredatornotmonster #coexist #weneedsharks #oneoceandiving shot using @aquatech_imagingsolutions https://www.instagram.com/p/CLR7afVBE1I/?igshid=e25x78xvgsam

#Repost from @oneoceanconservation team member @tahenley with some epic footage from a recent tour! ・・・ Swimming with sharks - if it’s not on your bucket list, it should be! I Some of the most peaceful times I’ve had are when I’m underwater sharing space with these animals. There are so many misconceptions surrounding sharks, and although they are apex predators who should be respected, they are not the monsters the media has made them out to be. We are killing sharks at an unsustainable rate, and they need us now more than ever. So even if you don’t have plans to swim with them, you can still learn about them, find the truth, and use your voice to speak up for them! We need sharks. Mahalo nui loa to @danabjarner for coming out with us and speaking up for sharks! 👏🏻🦈💙 Sharks function as the white blood cells of our oceans picking off the weak, sick, overpopulated and are a key component to healthy marine ecosystems. While it is disheartening to see sharks with fishing line and hooks, (which are removed whenever possible) it’s also important to remember a lot of sharks aren’t so lucky and don’t get away, being caught as bycatch instead. You can make a difference with your daily actions and choices including being mindful of your seafood consumption/where it comes from, spreading awareness about the true nature of sharks and why they are so important. #WorthMoreAlive #WeNeedSharks ____________ #Repost @danabjarner of an epic shot of #SharkIDPizza 🦈 🍕 named named for the triangular shaped notch on the dorsal from a biopsy collected by @himb_soest ・・・ Sandbar Shark - Carcharhinus plumbeus 🦈🦈 . . A couple of days ago me and @johnygohan went diving with sharks with @oneoceandiving and @nataliekparra @keikoconservation at #Oahu, #Hawaii. It was the most perfect day, perfect conditions, cristal clear water and lots and lots of galapagos and sandbar sharks🦈 But unfortunately if you learn to look closely, no matter where you go these days you will always find trace of negative human impact in nature. We saw at least two different sharks with hooks and fishing lines stuck on their mouths, its really not ok what we are doing to our planet and it sure isn’t fair. Cant explain in words how relaxed and lucky I felt being able to swim with such beautiful beings, its seriously like therapy and its sad to realize how they are being either slaughtered every day just for shark fin soup or being affected by how polluted the ocean is. Thank you @oneoceandiving not only for taking people to swim with sharks and make them realize they are not the man eating monsters the media has portrayed them to be but also for taking the time to explain to people in every single one of your tours why are sharks so important and crucial for a healthy ecosystem 🙏🏻

We are furious that this has happened in our own backyard. But thankfully this island is very small and we are hoping word of mouth will help us discover who did this. "Devastated to find out a young tagged female tiger shark was killed in my home area. We are looking for the person responsible, any information please text 1-808-649-0018 ([email protected]). Luckily our local community generally has a deep respect for sharks, however there are always a few people everywhere who enjoy killing and wasting with out regard for animals, the environment, or the greater community. Shark populations have been decimated by over 90-95% they are being eradicated mostly for the Chinese status symbol bowl of #sharkfinsoup however #sharkfishing in general has been shown to make impacts on local marine ecosystems, Sharks are responsible for keeping marine ecosystems healthy #weneedsharks .... I will send the first 30 people who repost this a Hawaiian Sunrise shell & SaveSharks Charm. #mahalo #aloha #sharkohana #sharkdiving #sharkarmy #oneoceandiving oneoceandiving.com #SaveOurSharks✔ #RacingExtinction⏰" -@oceanicramsey.
