Celebrating life with these guinea pig pups born 05/21 & 05/22. Graham had her pups a day earlier. We named them Cheez & Curls. Truffle had hers the following day. We named them PB & J. 😍😍😍 my daughter so loves her pets. We also have an area for them that we named "guineapiglandia."

Two wonderful service dogs in one day! Dr. Contreras had the opportunity to examine these two amazing dogs today for their annual health exams. Service dogs can be trained to provide help in a variety of capacities - helping people who have visual and hearing impairments, as well as helping people who suffer with seizures, PTSD, and other disabilities. From Scuttling Crabs to Obstinate Parrots: The Dumfries Pet Shows of the 1980s

Does your holiday tradition include watching a dog show – or at least playing it in the background while you do other tasks? While the Dumfries Pet Shows of the 1980s might not rival the yearly National Dog Show in attendance or popularity, Dumfries and Prince William County residents would clearly win in charm and cheer.

In September 1988, The Weems-Botts Museum hosted Dumfries Annual Craft Festival featuring a pet competition. Barbara Dubuc with Direct from Dumfries advised participants to “bathe your dog, fluff your bird’s feathers, change the fish’s water, brush the cat and polish the turtle’s shell.” She had good reason for the variety in her instruction as participants brought everything from hermit crabs to fish. Earlier competitions demonstrated the variety in awards, such as in the dog category. Judges awarded prizes for the most colorful, tallest, fuzziest, loudest, smallest, wiggliest (not sure how you test that one), best groomed, best behaved, friendliest, and “biggest smile”. Names for the pets were amusing as Duchess took the prize for loudest and Candy Kiss won for smallest size.

Historians trace our modern dog show competitions to the Victorian era with the “Dog Fancy”. The first competition appeared in June 1859 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as part of an annual cattle show. It only featured sporting dogs and awarded winners with guns. The Birmingham Dog Show Society hosted a version including non-sporting breeds that same year and its’ tremendous popularity and success led to the first National Dog Show in 1860 boasting 267 entries. While the weeklong Dog Fancy event at Cremorne Gardens in Chelsea attracted 100,000 visitors including the Prince of Wales, other localized shows combined the competition with other animals such as poultry. By the 1870s, the Kennel Club organized to standardize and regulate the show and hosted their first show at the Crystal Palace in 1873. This phenomenon spread to America and in 1877 the Westminster Kennel Club hosted “The First Annual New York Bench Show of Dogs”, the rules agreed upon by both the Westminster Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, a precursor to the American Kennel Club. Notably, Westminster extended this first show an extra day, donating all the extra proceeds to the ASPCA. Their show is the second longest continuously held show in America, right after the Kentucky Derby.

Back to 1988! While people brought dogs, the other category included birds, rabbits, and a hamster. Most appropriately for our nautical town, the hermit crabs stole the show as Larry, Curly, and Moe delighted people especially when Moe started scuttling. Gonzo was a clear winner for the “hardest” award – being a turtle after all. In earlier years, some owners even excelled over their pet’s performances. An African grey parrot refused to share or acknowledge his supposed 1,000-word vocabulary, so his owner valiantly imitated his vocalizations. Although we no longer host pet competitions, our 2020 companions deserve extra treats for wagging their tails or doing little fishy wiggles. Can you imagine Merchant Park filled with barking, squawking, and shrilly animals? Perhaps one day we can tackle the challenges of how exactly to test dogs for wiggliest.

A shoutout and a huge thank you to @pettonatureph on IG. We lost our almost five-year old guinea pig last Monday. We inquired about their services. They were able to pick up that same night and stored Theo in their freezer morgue. He was supposed to be "aquamated" on the third, but his schedule was moved to a day earlier. As such, he got to come home today, a day earlier than expected. 💕✨

Theo was our first teddy guinea pig and we loved him so. He was the perfect pet. We've seen him deteriorate over the years, but he has remained active. He even got to meet his great grandpups (featured prior to this post). Guess he felt the need to rest and move on now. We'll miss him a lot.

We're so happy there's Pet to Nature Philippines to help process Theo so we'll remember him for life. They have an FB and IG page. You can inquire from them should you need special funeral care for your beloved pets. 💕✨

New normal: call the vet when you arrive, they come out and get the pets (at a safe social distance), take them in for checkups, the vet calls to discuss, you pay over the phone. And having 4 pets go in all at once is no joke price wise - but we love them and they’re worth it and we love our vet too! Thankful for this place and the people who work here. Murphy pulled the vet assistant right into the building he was so excited. She came out laughing and saying what a character he is. The pets all have little issues but overall clean bills of health! So thankful. It was 2 years ago almost exactly that Charlie started going downhill and we started living at our previous vet’s office. I can’t help but think of that time.
