Fic: Haven (31/50)

Summary: They say Resembool is a haven, and they’re right. Lush pastures, quaint country town, farmers’ markets on Saturdays: a bucolic paradise.

But it’s more than that. Resembool is a haven for the runaways, the deserters, the people who don’t want to be found…

The Resembool community knows there’s something odd about Hohenheim, but they’re not going to let that stop them helping him out. This is Resembool after all, a place where no one has to hide and neighbours help neighbours, be they building a fence, chasing a sheep, or trying to save the country from an evil they inadvertently helped release centuries ago…

Or: A series of slices of life in an AU in which Hohenheim never leaves, and several broken state alchemists find hope and home in Resembool.

Summary: Resembool’s resident alchemists hold an inaugural meeting.

Ab’s honestly a bit surprised that it took them this long to all get together in one place. Well, that’s not strictly true. She, Tim, Alex and Roy have all been in the same place for quite a while, all of them ending up living together as a stopgap that they never really left. 

But this is the first time that the four of them have all met up with Hohenheim and decided to pool their resources. 

Over the time that they have been in Resembool, they have slowly been accepted into the village’s confidence and have learned about Hohenheim’s immortality and the circumstances that led to it. They’ve learned about what’s going on in the wider world of Amestris, a plan that’s been four hundred years in the making that Hohenheim and the rest of Resembool have spent the past few years trying to work against. 

It had made Ab’s stomach turn when she had found out exactly what the war in Ishval was for, just another point of bloodshed on a larger map that’s been built up over so long. Even though she knows that there was nothing that any of them could have done to prevent it, that the powers that be are being manipulated by something far greater with practically limitless power and alchemic ability, it still makes her feel slightly sick. It makes her even more glad that the four of them managed to get out whilst they could. Tim is the one to take the news the hardest. He’s seen first hand the damage that Philosophers’ Stones can do in the wrong hands. He knows how they’re made; he’s performed the human sacrifice that goes into them. Knowing that they’re all at the potential heart of one is a sobering thought. Ab wants to warn the entire population but a mass exodus to Xing would be a bit too obvious. 

Having been part of that bloodshed and carved the blood crest into the earth to create the point on the circle that encapsulates the country, Ab wants nothing more than to try and work against it now. When Alex had made the suggestion that the four of them join forces with Hohenheim as five heads are better than one, she had jumped at the notion. 

Hohenheim was more reluctant. It’s a fight he’s been having alone for so long that accepting help with it does not come naturally. Not when the stakes involved are so high. But Hohenheim was the first person to really accept and befriend Ab when she first arrived, and she will repay that if she can. The entire Elric family has been so good to all of them, and it’s clear to Ab that it’s going to take more than one alchemist to do what they’re attempting to do, no matter how skilled Hohenheim is. 

(She doesn’t want to think about how much knowledge he’s picked up over the centuries, the scope of it is mind-blowing and her brain can’t wrap itself around it.)

“Well,” Tim says, as they’re all sitting around the kitchen table with tea and Trisha’s carrot cake. “I have to say that this is definitely the strangest club I’ve ever been part of.”

“We need a name.” Roy gives a snort of laughter. “Alchemists Anonymous.”

“Roy…” Ab just shakes her head, but says nothing more. They need whatever humour they can get after everything that they’ve seen and everything that they’ve just been brought up to speed on. 

“So… What’s the plan?” Alex asks. “Other than somehow finding a way to defeat Hohenheim’s strange evil twin?”

“Can we please not call him my evil twin?” Hohenheim sounds pained.

“I don’t think that there is much more to the plan than that,” Tim points out. “If we can do that, hopefully everything will be put to rights.”

It won’t, not really. Ab doesn’t think that anything will ever truly be put to rights considering that the very foundation of the country is built on a lie, puppeted by someone else pulling the strings right from the off, planning another Xerxes on a huge scale from the moment the original fell. But if they can get rid of the homunculus with no further bloodshed, then at least they have more of a chance of starting to right the wrongs of the past. 

“For the last few years my research has primarily been focussed on preventing what happened in Xerxes from happening again,” Hohenheim begins. “Finding some method whereby I can stop the souls being taken in the first place, or, if it comes down to it, release them back to their bodies if the worst comes to the worst and they are taken. The problem is that everything comes down to a single point of failure.”

“You’ve got us now,” Alex says. “That’s four more points of failure.”

Hohenheim shakes his head. “It won’t be enough. If we’re all inside the circle when the time comes - and I find it hard to imagine that we won’t be - then we’ll be affected just the same as everyone else in the country unless we can pinpoint dead centre and make sure we’re there in order to activate whatever it is we need to activate. It’s got to be something that can work independently of me; of all of us.”

The group falls into silence. They’re into areas of alchemy that none of them have any kind of expertise in. Ab held her state licence for over twenty years and she never had any fear that her research wouldn’t be up to snuff whenever she presented for her annual review, the same goes for Tim, but even with two decades of involvement in the alchemical field, she’s never dealt with anything as theoretical as what they’re working with now. 

“I’ve got it.” 

Hohenheim rushes out of the room, leaving the other four looking at each other with confusion but a little bit of hope. He returns with a long scroll of paper that he unfurls over the table and begins to scour.

Tim leans in to take a look. “Erm, Hohenheim, I’m sure it’s great, but it’s in Xingese.”

“It’s a solar-lunar calendar.” Roy, half-Xingese and with a working knowledge if not fluency, suddenly sounds excited. “What are you looking for?”

“Total solar eclipses covering Amestris.” Hohenheim continues to scan the tightly packed text with Roy’s help. “The Xerxian Promised Day took place during an eclipse. I’m sure the Amestrian one will too.”

Ab, Tim and Alex all look at each other, helpless to assist.

It takes close to an hour of Roy and Hohenheim comparing solar and lunar positions and eliminating moon phases, but they find out when the next eclipse will be - a total solar eclipse that will envelop all of Amestris in its umbra.

An umbra creating a perfect circle that will move into place of its own accord, without any of them needing to draw it or put their hands to it in order to activate it. 

Just like that, they have an end point, and they have a definitive goal that they can work towards, together.

Despite the somewhat poor taste, the name ‘Alchemists Anonymous’ sticks.

Finally finished with the headcanon of the Twili and the Twilight Realm! Or at the very least the main stuff regarding them and their culture. O: Took me so long ‘cuz I had to draw everything up first but I’m really happy with how everything came out. Now before I get into the headcanon I’d like to thank ya’ll for allowing me to have some of your OCs cameo in the post, it saved me quite a bit of time instead of me having to design the characters from the ground up, and it was a lot of fun! <: The following is featured:

-The Twili are a unique race that inhabit the Twilight Realm, a realm of which they didn’t originate from but have since made their home all those many centuries ago. They were once Hylian but when their ancestors, a group called “The Interlopers” were banished to the Twilight Realm for their crimes, they have since evolved to adapt to their environment and, in turn, have evolved into a race of their own.

-Twili are covered in a short but thick coat of fur, often coming in two different tones and distinct markings. The tones are usually a greenish gray or blue-grey with a much lighter color of the same tone, however it isn’t too uncommon to see Twili with a more reddish tint to their fur. Their hair color is often a unique gradient of red to yellow and their eyes are often a shade of red (with the sclera usually a light yellow). Despite having normal-like feet, the Twili are digitgrade and always stand on the tips of their toes. Twili all have slit pupils, claw-tipped fingers, and small-ish fangs adorning their mouths: they are most likened to being more “feral” in appearance in comparison to their Hylian relatives, which is true to some extent.

All Twili have natural tattoos that are etched into their skin (and is entirely visible through their fur), and these marks have the capacity to glow if the individual is using magic. These tattoos are almost always a bright green-blue or electric blue in color. While each individual’s tattoos are generally different, all Twili have tattoos that seem to share the same motifs and repeated patterns as shown in the “Common Markings” panel above.

-The three headshots show off rare color mutations seen within the Twili. All the information about these mutations can be seen and read in the info-boxes of each headshot above! <:

-The Twili, given their evolution to better inhabit their environment, all have a sensitivity to the sun. Exposure to the sun doesn’t necessarily harm them however sunlight upon their bodies can cause discomfort, especially if exposed for too long. Overexposure to extreme and direct sunlight or divine light can be harmful or even lethal to a Twili (ex: Midna being mortally wounded when exposed to a Light’s spirit’s unfiltered light directly). As a means to protect themselves, the Twili will often don hooded cloaks when visiting the Light Realm. 

-Culturally, the Twili are indifferent and unbothered by nudity. It isn’t uncommon to see a Twili waltzing around in near nothing as far as clothing goes, however all Twili wear loincloths out of politeness instead of any real embarrassment to their bodies. Pants and shirts are very rarely worn unless the Twili’s specific profession requires it, which will be talked about a little more in detail below.

-The Twili don’t quite follow the typical social ranking system often seen in other cultures. That’s to say, “Upper-class, Middle-class, Working-class, ect” doesn’t necessarily exist in the Twili’s culture. Instead they are categorized by the profession they choose to partake in, though that doesn’t necessarily separate them from each other, due to their belief that every Twili serves an important purpose to their society, no matter where they’re born or who they’re born to. The only exception to this belief are religious figures and royalty, but while Royalty are distinguished by blood, any Twili can become a religious figure should they choose to commit themselves to the profession.

At any rate, their society is categorized by profession:

Artisans: Twili who’s focus is on the artistry of their culture. Includes professions such as: Painters, writers, musicians, craftsmen, architects, chefs, so on.

Enforcers: Twili who’s roles are to provide law enforcement and the protection of their people. Includes professions as: warriors, law enforcers, knights to the crown, judges, so on.

Providers: Twili who’s roles focus on providing the necessities of living to their society. Includes professions as: hunters, farmers, fishermen, healers/doctors, so on.

Mentors: Twili who focus on the pursuit for knowledge as well as the desire to share that knowledge. Includes professions such as: philosophers, teachers, librarians, wizards/witches

Spirituals: Twili who’s focus is on the spiritual and religious aspect of their society, they act as the superficial bridge between their people and the gods they worship. Includes professions such as: Priests and Priestesses, shamans, monks

-Despite their non-nonchalance toward clothing, what a Twili wears can indicate their profession. For example: a monk or a shaman are often seen in etched pants or traditional robes, while a Twili with a profession in fashion may wear transparent silks and an abundance of jewelry. Twili with practical and labor-based professions, like farming or metalsmithing, are unlikely to wear anything more than the bare minimum of the cultural loincloth so it won’t get in the way of their work, while royalty and Twili involved with the government are often seen wearing moderate but relatively intricate jewelry, often in copper or bronze.

-Midna is no longer the Queen of the Twili, having since willingly stepped down to allow another leader to the throne. However, the events of Twilight Princess has since elevated her as a sort of demi-god to her people, much to her chagrin. As a living deity to her culture, Midna still retains much of the power she had as queen, if not moreso given her current status. -The panel with the 2 BG speedpaintings are my vision of the track leading to the Twilight Realm and the Twilight Realm itself respectively. The destruction of the mirror may have made traveling between the realms more difficult but it didn’t make it impossible. Sometime in her long-standing rule as the Queen of the Twili, Midna eventually went hard at work to re-establish that direct connection to the realms and, once she did, set out to put into place an alliance between the Twilight Realm and the Light Realm. It took a couple of long centuries before it was fully in effect, and from that point on relation between the two realms have only grown stronger. It wasn’t long before transportation between the realms was established, which in turn only strengthened their comradery. Nowadays it’s very common to see Light Dwellers visiting or even living in the Twilight Realm, and vice versa for the Twili.

-The Twilight Realm is accessible through the use of a Spirit Train, a unique locomotive that has access to traveling into realms connected to its native one. The train that runs to the Twilight Realm is a one-way train that travels through nearly every possible realm that’s available to visit, with the Twilight Realm being it’s first stop.

-The last panel is a depiction of a Twili Wolf. The Twili Wolf is a sacred animal in Twili culture, a creature who was once of the light realm before adapting to the Twilight Realm way before the Twili even inhabited the land, they are a symbol of survival, freedom, and power. Their heads are covered in a strange skull-like chitin that is often mimicked by the Twili when making armor and artifacts. The Twili Wolf is typically huge, about as big as a horse, and they have orbs of raw magical energy rolling off their fur as if it were flickers of flame.

Name: honestly I wouldn't advice anyone to give their name on Internet, but maybe it's just my old safe too attached to anonymity ^^' You can call me Mineko though, a lot of people use it (like a real name actually ) but it's the username I go to first generally in any website.

Nickname: I have a lot of nickname but most of them aren't used anymore

Zodiac: Cancer. By the way story time. Last year in uni I met a friend of one of my classmate that I was working with for a group project (we were assigned group by random so it's to tell you how much of a stranger this guy was). And in like 10 mn of discussion (and 10 mn of discussion with me when I don't know you is NOT a lot) the friend of my classmate just blurted out "you're born in July right?" So I just looked at him surprised before saying that yes I was. And then he told me I was acting like a typical cancer, so I guess if you're good in astrology you know now a lot about me? XD

Height: I know I already answered this before, I think it was close to 170 cm but not quite. Too lazy to search -_-

Favorite Musician: Stromae. If you don't know Stromae go check any of his song. Some are bellow his average level but otherwise he is a great artist. I know that in English a lot of his play of word are lost but hmm try anyway.

Recently I also had a liking for Chase Holfelder. You know this guy who remade "animal" which is used for amv in every fandom ever xD and it's the same for almost all the song he takes from major to minor keys. His kitchen cover are good too and made me dicover imagine dragon.

Recently, and on another genre Yann tiersen is also a musician I discovered recently and every song from him are beautiful to listen.

Also if you study biology acapella science is really good. It's where I first listened to evo devo- I mean despacito (yes I don't listen to radio) and while in the original song the good rythm is ruined by stupid lyrics, their evo devo version make this song have a great rythm AND being intelligent ! (Really if I had this song back when I was studying embryo development it could have helped at least a bit much x_x)

Last Thing I Googled: a dandelion because I needed a reference for the last picture I made :3 but generally I don't google thing, I just go back to my three favourite site already saved xD

Other Blogs: mineko-mairhiel that I use to gather my drawings. I could have done that on this blog by tagging properly, but I didn't know how it worked before xp but I didn't post since a while on there. I mean tumblr is great to share fandom stuff but I mostly draw random character, not even OC, it's just, pictures x). But if I obsess on another game/series and the fandom isn't dead by the time I do (mystic messenger was a big exception, I usually start to be enthusiastic about things that people stop caring about xD) I might be active on there again, who knows.

Do I get Asks: It almost never happen but when I do get ask, I answer them ridiculously late (a bit like tag game) I'm sorry for the few soul who dropped by there, I swear it wasn't on purpose.

Why Did I Choose This Nickname: my current url? I guess it's the url since nicknames aren't chosen and generally just "happen" xD Well you know how there wasn't any proposition to chose an url before. And I tried absolutely every damn username I ever used in my life and none of them worked. And I got upset to see that it wasn't even "this url is already taken" but an unknown error happened (une erreur inconnue est survenue). So, out of spite I wrote "une fucking erreur inconnur" without caring about orthograph and it passed. I was so done when I wrote that that I just rolled with it xD Then a few month later I thought "hmm the word fucking in my url make me seems violent let's get rid of that. And I could also get rid of the typo while I'm at it." I'll let you guess why I ended up leaving the typo xD

Amount of sleep: If life was fair I could sleep 10 to 12 hours everyday. Since I have to study it's around 5-6. 8 if I don't work as much as I should o/

What am I wearing: my 8 yo pyjama that's not even purple anymore but fit wonderfully on me and that will never be thrown away unless it's shredded to piece or my mother come visit me.
