I have no idea why you’re reading this after seeing the title, but hey, here we are. 

Anyways, welcome to the hellhole that is my Tumblr page. I literally just started this blog because I was hella bored and I needed to do smth in the moment. And there it was, my first post. Of course, it barely got any attention from ppl, but I still carried on and somehow ended up here. 

Some things to know abt me (stop reading, I’m blushing 🤭):

- If you couldn’t tell, I love Team Fortress 2! I started playing in early 2022 after my friend showed me a shitload of the “Meet the Team” videos (and yes, that includes the parody ones.) 

- Most of the time, I literally have no idea what I’m doing, but ig that’s ok because I get clout anyways (I’m a very greedy person lmao)

- I play the saxophone! Alto to be exact. I plan to play jazz in the future as a side job besides art (that is, if I get into the art industry in the first place) I also play the piano, but that’s more of a hobby.

- I am a Christian person. And a firm believer at that, so that means I follow Christian beliefs. And you have other beliefs, respects to you! Someone’s “labels” shouldn’t describe who they are as a person!

- I love learning about WWII! This topic is probably the only thing that’s running in my brain for 75% of the time. You don’t wanna know what the other 25% is.

- I am in your walls. Run. Now. Before I take your dog. (If you didn't have one, who's dog did I sacrifice then???)

- Besides God himself, I worship the almighty hot dog scout. Praise him in this glorious form.

Hello and welcome to my Ted Talk, kids.

First off, I just want to clarify: I’m sure people who write fics like this put a lot of work into them, but that doesn’t make them okay.

Fan fictions about real people aren’t okay.

I actually can’t believe this is something I have to say, but it’s a subject that’s been irking me since I joined tumblr. Fanfics featuring famous actors “x reader” have been popping up on my dash since I signed up on this hellsite.

Imma jump right into this shit and just say:

Actors are fucking people.

Newsflash! They’re human beings, they have feelings and emotions. Them working in the entertainment industry doesn’t lessen their humanity. Writing these fics, even reading them, is horribly invasive and morally just wrong. You’re de-humanising these people and treating them like fictional characters. Actors aren’t toys for your amusement, to use and bend and manipulate as you like.

They’re also just… weird? Like, why would you do that?

It’s one thing to have a crush on an actor or actress, it’s another thing to write out your fantasy and post it online for people to read, thereby creating a community for it and normalising the practise.

Writing it and posting it is crossing a line. A visible, obvious line.

One common argument is probably something like, “Oh but Ely, they’re famous! They’ll never see it!”

Bullshit.

It doesn’t matter if they’ll see it or not, and you can’t guarantee they won’t. Say curiosity strikes them and they wander into this hellhole of weird, creepy fics about THEM. Even if the scenario is unlikely, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s all still so weird.

You’re taking a person who you find physically attractive, throwing their personality out the window and moulding them into your exact type, and then using their name to write out your daydreams and fantasies. Then you post it, knowing other people also have crushes on this person and might read it. It spreads around and around, gaining notes and popularity, and I sit back in complete awe that people can be SO FUCKED UP.

Take a fanfic about Finn Wolfhard for example. Here are a couple of excerpts:

First off: the dude literally isn’t even in character.

Actually, let me pause.

He’s not a character. This isn’t an OOC situation, it’s OOP, or, out of person. Because he’s a person. With feelings. Imma keep sayin that shit so it sinks in nice and good for all you twelve year olds.

Second, literally what in the absolute fuck.

I sniff you, you sniff me! That’s totally fucking NORMAL.

Another category of fics like these are “actor x actor”. Like, fillie, and fack. Y’know, two friendships that were ruined by people who ship the actors together? Finn and Millie don’t even INTERACT anymore (I’m pretty sure they’ve been coached not to) because of insta stans and weirdos on tumblr who ship them together and make every photo and video into something romantic. Millie’s had to delete photos with Finn in them off of her instagram page because she got so many “OMG FILLIE 😍” comments. That’s some toxic fucked up shit. 

You may not think it, but the fandom has impact, especially as a collective. One person shipping fillie and writing about it may not seem like a big deal, but one becomes two and two becomes three and then you have a whole group of people doing it because “everyone else is so it must be okay!”

Nope. 

Here’s a thoughtful quote from a Reddit user: “The frightening attitude that some fans seem to have that a famous person somehow belongs to them, is connected to them personally, or owes them access to their life and mind.”

I’m so sick and tired of seeing this shit. It’s wrong, it’s intrusive, and it implies that these human beings are no more important or valuable than fictional characters (who don’t have real emotions).

It’s bullshit and I’m not here for it.

1. What was your first impression of the roleplay community on Tumblr? And what’s your impression of it now?

// When it’s not being a hellhole, I find myself always having a blast in any of the RPCs I’m in. I’ve never had any luck in truly getting involved in the main fandom, and the more I look at any main fandom, the more I’d rather barely have anything to do with it. :|. The RPC has the potential to be quite welcoming, and for the first time I felt like I was capable of sharing my ideas/thoughts/headcanons, and I found people who listened to it!

With that said though... Tumblr RPC can also be summed up as highschool 2.0, for so many God awful reasons. We all know the issues, I don’t think I need to waste my time listing it. Although I must say, the RPC might be the only place on Earth, you might find people nearing their 30s throwing fits and tantrums like goddamn kids. At times it honestly feels like tumblr RPC’s focus is skewed. People are a lot more invested in policing others, than doing the basic requirements of RP... You know... Writing... Plotting... But it’s what we have, and I’ll try my best to stray away from people who behave like that.

7. What is the one trend you miss the most that’s no longer popular or seen as much as it was before?

// There isn’t any trend that comes to my mind. Rather, I miss when we all had more free time, and we could be more active on Tumblr. But we grow, age, move on to other things and that’s the natural course of things. So I guess, I miss seeing a lively dash.

Edit 1: Before anyone says anything. Yes, I’m well aware this is also the result of me being extremely picky about following people back. I’ve prioritized my comfort (so I won’t end up overwhelming myself), over mass-following a lot of people who most certainly won’t mesh well with me. I’m not complaining., don’t mistake what I’m saying. All I’m saying is that my dash has been pretty dead, due to most of my partners being busy with IRL and as such, can’t be on tumblr. That’s all.

10.  Are there any fandom(s) you avoid roleplaying in? (I think that the message glitched-- and didn’t send the rest of the digits LMAO. So I’m taking a guess!)

I’ve also considered re-adding League of Legends on the list, and make some new additions to it such as: Genshin Impact (I hear the fandom is trying to be as bad as LoL’s sO...), Danganronpa and BNHA (??? IDEK the name of the series TBH, I just cringe so badly every time I see those franchises. Something about them, turns me off A LOT. Is it because they are all over the place? Their art is ugly? Who knows?).

AMA Transcript: In The Silence I Hear You

Recently, @skadventuretime, @eerna (JoKay on Discord) and @amberlehcar stopped by to chat about their 2016 Resbang, In The Silence I Hear You! Here’s some of what went down:

Q: Okay, first of all thanks for single handedly getting me to finally watch YLIA lol! My question to madi is, what was the inspiration behind soul's nightmares? Because that was something I noticed was different from the source material! I mean, they were there but yours were way more nightmarish and horrifying lol! (That is absolutely a compliment by the way.) What made you go that route?

madi: ahahaha 1) You're very welcome, that anime Ruined me and one of the first things I did after watching it and Soul Eater around the same time was look for the AU, because surely it had to be a thing. When it wasn't, I was like welp, I know what I must do. As for the nightmare inspiration, it was part Soul having them in canon and part just what sort of came out of me as I wrote. It wasn't planned per se. I tended to sort of let what happened happen at those parts and just intuited nightmares there, though I did sort of intentionally have them stop as he began to open up to Maka more.

Q: I would like to know how Jo determines how many sparkles to put in an art piece for maximum heartbreak.

JoKay: Simply. I just really love sparkles and let them do whatever they want in my work.~~ BD

madi: OkAY. CAN I JUST FIRST SAY MY FAV THING ABOUT JO'S ART. Because the way she did the mirroring is incredible. Like, this is my desktop background. They go together so well:

Q: Favourite moment in the fic or about the art?

madi: I think my favorite moment was writing Soul beginning to get through his block. I ended up having a lot of fun with the over-the-top synesthetic music bits and that part was very heartfelt for me.

JoKay: Favourite moment in the fic: the hospital visiting. I wanted to illustrate it really badly and ranted to Madi like. For days. About all the ideas I've had. It was heartbreaking but colorful and vivid, and the way Madi writes the two is just.... ahhhhhIhhhHHHH

madi: And like, Jo paid attention to the little details?? ? ?? Like, his tie isnt tied there. I just threw in some little bit about how he thought his tie would be crooked since Maka wasnt there to help him and ladjglkdsfg. I forgot about it tho til I saw her art.

JoKay: You threw in so many little details that struck me and I thought "YES I WANNA MAKE THIS A PART OF THE PICTURE SOMEHOW"

Q: Care to talk a little about your process? What program do you use?

JoKay: Sure! I start off with rereading the text I want to illustrate about ten times. I die a bit and try to remember the feeling to capture it. I make a traditional pencil sketch. For the Maka picture I had to take some references of myself with a violin, which... took a long time to get right haha. Next I take a picture of the sketch and do lineart in an app called MediBang Paint on my Samsung. I choose a color palette, pick the bg color, and put down basic colors. I shade, then add multiply and overlay layers to add lighting, and this is where the final palette and overall feeling gets formed. And then, best for last, the sparkles! Which usually take 3-4 layers, depending on opacity I want.

Q: This was a difficult read (in the best way); what scene/scenes did you find most difficult to write?

madi: I ended up going back and rewriting a good chunk of the beginning third of the fic around November/December because it just wasnt getting at what I wanted, tone or writing quality-wise. I have a ~12k doc of dumped/scrapped stuff from this. /cries. But specific scene wise, hm. I agonized a bit over the hospital scene with Spirit a little, because I wanted that to hit a certain kind of helpless sadness where there is nothing you can do to fix anything.

Q: This had such emotional depth to it and lots of moving pieces of grief and accurate descriptions of guilt/grief that hit me hard. Was it hard to write something so emotional and was it as much of an emotional journey writing as it was reading?

madi: I guess, well. writing for me, and I think a lot of people, can be a very intimate look at who a person is, and I think that's where the guilt/grief came from. I tend to internalize a lot of that stuff, especially with the grief/regret/wistfulness, so I think that's where all that came from. And it's funny, it wasnt hard to write in the moment, as I was listening to a bunch of ridiculous music and yelling at/with Bones about her Resbang at the same time, but looking back I can definitely see a journey and it was as much because of the friends I made during this process as much as the act of writing. [For example], around the part where maka dusts off the piano, Bones came in with some Real Piano Experience and helped me understand what actually goes into that and how long it'd take for things to actually lose tone, etc. and I was like, heck, i didnt think about that, having not played a classical piano. Moral of the story is this is why betas are gr9. It's fucking sappy as shit, but it's true. I learned sO much about not just writing, but also life and irl shit from my betababes. Part of my Process turned out to be letting Bones throw me all sorts of cognitive dissonance shit and terrorize me with very emotional music, and then I'd mix a drink and get to it. Q: That golden swoop in her dress on the right side is what really kills me. That exiting feeling.

madi: So fun story: Jo sent me her second piece a few days before posting and I legit teared up.

JoKay: Handkerchiefs all over the place.

madi: All. Over. I also tried to sort of avoid the awkward love triangle in the anime bc i didnt feel like it really fit SoMa. Also, this is what me and Jo's convos looked like a lot towards the end:

Q: Adverb gate time?

madi: To explain adverbgate, basically, Bones came in and 1) made me realize I overused adverbs 2) this led to me realizing oH by not using them and applying better characterization things, all is better than the first time. I told all my betas, and part of the reason I asked who I asked, [was for them] to not hold back and if they saw something they thought was off or whatever, to tell me and not worry about hurting my feelings because i was in this to improve and learn. I'd much rather have it done like this, because now I really feel like I learned a lot and got better. Bones went from the 98 edits in chap 1 or 2, to 4 [edits] in the last one. Q: I wanna know Amber, what made you decide to do a VA project? It turned out so freakin well and you guys were so good T.T

JoKay: The VA was so perfect, I teared up a bit. Beautifully done.

AmberLehcar: I was an amateur voice actor on YouTube prior to joining tumblr (good luck finding anything I was in though. /cries) And I'm a competitve asshole so I was like "I'm gonna be different."

Q: Anything in particular that made you choose that specific scene to do?

AmberLehcar: I asked Madi right away what she wanted. And it wasn't even written yet when I asked lol.

madi: Like, okay, when she sent me the first clips, I was blown away because they sounded better than over half the English dubs I've seen. Yeahhh I uh, I could have been more on top of things. But I knew that scene was gonna be in there and it sounded like the kinda emotional moment that would be good for her project, so I wrote that scene out of order.

AmberLehcar: I love it, it's so good. Madi was there while Brian was recording. She's a director now :3 She heard all the ridiculousness.

madi: You guys were soooo gooood! And your puppy, ahhhh. I still have that laugh track, too.

AmberLehcar: My pup wanted to be a star. I was so nervous [that] the piano bit was so bad people would hate it. It dragged so long. In writing it works so well. Listening, though...

madi: Man, you captured the transition well tho, of him slowly finding his sound and no longer needing to hear it through her.

AmberLehcar: Playing badly and repeating playing badly is tough, dude, so I'm glad it worked nicely.

Q: Did you make a public playlist of the stuff you listened to?

madi: OhH yes, yes i did /slinks off. JoKay: Yeah! Artists that make my inspiration wander could be found on tumblr as viria, lukrecious, loish, mormoc, also IG mizymiyajima and cyarine. IRL I live for Alphonse Mucha's work.

Q: Are you working on anything else now Jo? What is on the Horizon?

JoKay: SfTF is the only fic in my opus! Idk I just don't feel confident to write anything else...

JoKay: As for paintings... boy does The Lunar Chronicles' fandom have some stuff in store for them once I find the time. I will save up for a proper tablet soon, so that will be a new beginning for me.

Instagram is much more than a platform filled with overly perfect, beautifully filtered snippets of your friends' lives that make you feel insecure about your own. You just have to know where to look.

Is there anything better than watching life-size hands concoct miniature meals using teeny tiny cooking utensils? Debatable, but Walking with Giants is one of the many channels on YouTube dedicated to cooking up bite-sized food and it's absolutely addicting to watch.

Soothing Relaxation

Spending the entire day indoors staring at the computer, as is required by so many jobs today, is truly the worst. And though you might not be able to spend the entire day staring out the window, you can get a nice view of "nature" through your laptop.

The Soothing Relaxation YouTube channel lives up to its name by pairing stunning videos of nature with calming AF piano, cello, violin, harp, guitar, and choir music. Carving candles is a unique form of art that takes a whole lot of talent and is essentially impossible to look away from. Though the internet does offer places to help us de-stress, sometimes the best thing we can do is ~absolutely nothing~ for two straight minutes.

hi and welcome to this hellhole which i managed to leave mostly unattended for about 2 years!

with layouts, do you mean themes? there are so many talented people who create themes for free! theme-hunter and hunterthemes are the ones I mostly check, besides the creator of the theme i use at the time. a good theme is nice but your content and you yourself is what’s actually important so i wouldn’t spend too much time fiddling. on these blogs there should be quick guides on how to install the theme (you go to settings and edit theme, or to your blog and press the edit theme/customise button at the top right corner).

and i don’t rly follow a lot of people - because i get too stresséd when there’s a lot going on on my dash and/or i see the same thing multiple times during a short period of time. and i also have no idea what you may like on your blog, but here’s a link to my about page which also has a little tab called “blogroll” in which you will find the people i follow. i know it’s a little hard to see their url names, but i haven’t got time to fix that so just open in a new tab and you’ll be able to quickly check their content and who they are!
