TLKOF CHAPTER 1 SPOILERS

Okay wanted to share my thoughts about the chapter!!! Should be noted; will be lots of spoilers

1. Throughly enjoyed Dru’s point of view!! She is so funny!! Cannot wait to see the progression of her plot throughout the novel :D

2. Honestly kind of disliked how overly fast paced it was. It felt like each page led to something different like automatically. It’s obvious a rough draft and she has more than a year to change it up and add more or less, but to me it definitely felt like a draft. (SHOULD NOTE: I DO NOT SAY THIS WITH MALICIOUS OR ILL INTENT. There is nothing wrong with a draft feeling like a draft!!! )

3. DRU BEING 5’3 😭😭 tall blackthorn headcanon destroyed, dead in a DITCH. Sorry Dru you’ll always be 5’7 to me. Also her randomly sayinf she was 5’3 was funny, it wasn’t bad writing or anything, have to preface that, I just thought it was funny!! Welcome back Clary Fairchild!

4. ASHHHHHHH he was so funny. When he told Dru that he was pretty memorable and she was like “idk u” I know he cried himself to sleep after that.

5. THAIS CRUMBSSS. She sounds so pretty! I’m in love. Also we know that she’s competitive 👀👀 I’m liking this cutie already. Her and Kit can have a freckle off <3

6. Thought the ending of this chapter kind of… random? Idk. Again I think that ties into the fact that I thought this chapter went toooo fast. But I also think it’s smart to end the teaser chapter with a kind of cliffhanger!

7. I also kind of liked how the shadowhunter academy ‘gang’ in this book had a same feeling as the TFTSA gang kind of did. It’s obvious a stretchy comparison to make because we haven’t seen much on this academy, but I really did enjoy that. It really does feel like a school!!! If this makes any sense hahaha

Anyways, I was a bit worried about this chapter and i obviously have some criticism (as I always do) but so far I enjoyed it!! I was a bit worried but it seems like fun, I really enjoyed the fact the first chapter included intriguing plot points that make you want to continue reading the novel. I think a lot of this stuff sets up really good stuff for TLKOF sooo I’m excited to see it all expanded !!!

hello, i’m deeya.

i have started this studyblr to document my academic journey to become a chartered accountant one day. i hope you support me, and we build a lovely community xx

i’m seventeen years old and i graduated from high school a few months ago. i have decided to pursue chartered accountancy along with bcom or bcom hons (still not sure).

college will start in fall, and currently i’ll spend my summer working to complete ca foundation.

fav writers/poets: dostoyvesky, sylvia plath!!(i love her), oscar wilde, jane austen, mary shelley, and franz kafka.

i am a big reader, well used to be, but i now i don’t have enough time for it (shameful i know)

i am also an aspiring writer! i am currently working on two novels and i even have an writersgram (shush i’m not disclosing it yet)

i love stories about history, greek mythology, hindu mythology and everything about those.

i speak three languages but i want to learn atleast seven.

i had a huge dark academia phase, and i seriously love greek and latin so much.

i want to make a short film all by myself and i’m learning more about filmatography.

City of Bones is a great place to start! sometimes people will recommend starting elsewhere, because it's not the best book but imo since it's the first book to be published its the easiest introduction. the world building is introduced gradually throughout the book, it's fun to read, not too long etc. so I would start there!

as for the reading order I would recommend a modified publication order. you could definitely do the publication order as is (just follow the publication dates and be mindful that some books came out the same year) but I personally would make some small tweaks to make it more straightforward :)

start with the first three books of The Mortal Instruments; City of Bones (2007), City of Ashes (2008), and City of Glass (2009)

then, read The Infernal Devices trilogy; Clockwork Angel (2010), Clockwork Prince (2011) and Clockwork Princess (2013)

finish the rest of The Mortal Instruments; City of Fallen Angels (2011), City of Lost Souls (2012) (optional: The Bane Chronicles (2013/14), a short story collection about Magnus Bane. it's not important for plot or anything but it does have spoilers for Clockwork Princess & City of Lost Souls so you can read at any point after them) and City of Heavenly Fire (2014)

then it's Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy (2015/16) this is also a short story collection and it's technically optional but I definitely recommend reading it now, as it follows an unresolved storyline from City of Heavenly Fire

next is The Dark Artifices, which is Lady Midnight (2016), Lord of Shadows (2017) and Queen of Air and Darkness (2018) (aka the longest tsc book, good luck!)

then there's the third and final (for now) short story collection Ghosts of the Shadow Market (2018/19)

the Eldest Curses trilogy is kinda hard to place since the books take place years apart & are more of a standalone so you can kinda just read them whenever. The Red Scrolls of Magic (2019) takes place in 2007 at the same time as City of Fallen Angels & The Lost Book of the White (2020) takes place in 2010 after Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and before Lady Midnight (the third book is not yet released)

which brings us to the most recent series, The Last Hours; Chain of Gold (2020), Chain of Iron (2021) and Chain of Thorns (2023)

the last thing is Secrets of Blackthorn Hall (2022) which is a multimedia epistolary novel that was published here on tumblr (@secretsofblackthornhall) and is currently in the works to become a physically published book at some point soon. it came out before Chain of Thorns and there's a few references to it in the book, but they're pretty minor. you can read it before or after it's really up to you.

Lark Thrushcross Living with her mother and who she thought was Michael Wayland, Lark grew up in a harsh, cold home, until the age of nearly ten, when her mother and 'Michael' were killed and she was shipped, alongside Jace, to New York to be raised by the Lightwoods. Never one to back down from a fight, Lark is tough and headstrong. Her only weakness (in her humble opinon) is that pesky crush on her life long best friend. And when Clary Fairchild comes stumbling into their lives, everything is turned upside down.

Anais Thrushcross If Lucian Greymark was Valentine's right hand, Anais was his left. The Circle was everything Anais believed in, when Valentine suggested it was time for her to get pregnant, she did just that. When he wanted to experiment on her child, he didnt have to sneak it, Pregnant Anais happily let him do whatever it took to ensure her child would be strong, would be an asset to The Circle and their cause. After it all fell apart, she remained by Valentine's side, helping him raise Jace and her own daughter, Lark. To this day, she is a die hard follower of Valentine, even if it means going head to head with her daughter.

Rowena 'Romy' Thornhill The daughter of the newest headmaster of the Shadowhunter academy, just in time for them to open up applications to warlocks, Romy is a big hearted wild child, she welcomes the Warlocks with open arms and takes them under her wing. Then tragedy strikes. A couple years later, she's doing her job as a shadow hunter working wit her best friend and partner, Tavvy Blackthorn, when she finds herself face to face with the two men she'd been avoiding- Max and Rafe Lightwood-Bane

Connor Thornhill "You have one job, Con. Keep an eye on Kit, protect him. He can't know about us and what we are, but you have to keep him safe" That was all Connor knew and that was what he lived by. So when his best friend's dad is killed and Kit is being taken away, Connor knows what he has to do, throw himself into danger and get taken away with him, duh.

Rhys Halston High warlock extraordinaire, Rhys makes his way to New York to visit with his old friend Magnus when he finds himself stuck there, helping with a war between downworlders and the Shadowhunters. But his real reason for staying? A Nerdy little vampire named Simon.

Jett Highsmith Herondale Everyone thought Stephen Herondale died before his son Jace was born- they were wrong. Near death, having dragged himself away from the fight, Stephen was found, with no memory of what happened or who he was. Nursed back to health by the woman he would fall in love with, the pair soon had a son- who was ripped from their arms by Valentine- who murdered the lovers right then and there. Dru walked to the booth where a Faerie had pointed her too, the new adres of Ragnor Fell. She approached the stall and was alarmed with the items being sold. From rare talismans to spellbooks on wards. It was a warlock booth dedicated to protective magic and not the scam artist kind. In the blink of an eye, the door behind the stall opened with green little sparks. Dru immediately went for the opening and found Ragnor Fell walking down the staircase, a grim look on his face. "From the Blackthorn look of you, I take it your Tiberius' sister. Welcome." "Look, as much as I'd like to give you an earfull for enabling Ty back then, Livvy's spirit did came with valuable information which is how I got stuck here. Can you help me get back to the Shadowhunters Academy in Exile? As in, sneak me in through a portal to my room?" Ragnor looked at her knowingly, "You came using the tunnel from Faerie at that S-bahn station haven't you?" "I think so." Ragnor rubbed his temples. "And once again Shadowhunter teenagers are at the middle of the brewing storm. Why is it always a bunch of students aged Nephilim?" Dru shrugged as the warlock sighed. "I'll get you to your room if you promise me you'll report to Alec and Magnus immediately." "Well, I can ask the headmaster to arrange a meeting after I'll tell him what happened." She answered. Ragnor nodded in agreement. "That's good, kid. You should be happy you made it out alive." "Trust me, I am." Ragnor hurried to make a Portal and Dru bet he had a feeling he knew why she had been in Faerie and that he was going to talk about her arrival with someone and wanted to do so as fast as possible. However, she did not care because she too wanted to get back as fast possible and let Ty and Kit know she was alright and she had made it back to New York in a surprisingly safe yet extraordinary journey. So she jumped through the Portal the moment it appeared, not wasting a single second to get back to school. Now that's a thought she never would have guessed she'd ever have.

Tessa was resting against Jem, Mina on their laps as they rested in the couch, the boys upstairs. They had sent Emma and Julian away earlier as Emma recovered enough to rest at Blackthorn Hall. Which was almost a blessing, because delivering the news of Drusilla's dissapearance to Julian in person would have wrecked Ty even more. Mina stirred on their laps and seemed to sense their worry because she pouted at them and started shaking her head. "Of course, everything will be alright. It always turns out okay in the end." Jem said, having seen many teens and many tragedies. Tessa hummed and stood up. "I'm going to make some tea. Do you also desire a cup?" "Yes." Jem said, holding Mina close to him on his lap. "You really have your mother's mouth you know," Jem cooed to Mina and Tessa couldn't help but be taken back. For it was the way that Jem held Mina on his lap, that Tessa was reminded of Will all those years ago. In their love for their daughters, they weren't too dissimilar.

A young Lucie was sitting on Will's lap, his beautiful blue eyes sparkling with delight as his daughter told him a story she made up. She was about 7 years old at the time, her imagination and love for stories already rooting itself in her heart. Once Lucie was finished, she looked up curiously at her father, "Did you like it?" Will smiled at her. "Of course I do. Have I ever told you it was your mother's way of words that made me fall in love with her? She wrote the most beautiful letters and I was enarmored immediately with her charm." Tessa sitting across him felt her cheeks heat up a little at the memory of so long ago. "Really?" Lucie asked with a sweet wonder. "Yes. You are so like your mother, you know?" Will said, holding her close.

"How are they so indulged in the mundane world and culture but apparently are so secluded from it?" -In the beginning, I thought Shadowhunters that live in Institutes and the newly Ascended Shadowhuters are influenced by mundane cultures or prejudices. It would make sense for Shadowhuters in Idris to villainize Downwolders and Mundanes, but it doesn't make sense for them to have prejudices against Persian, Indian or other non-European cultures. But then I was once again disappointed by CC's lack of skill in world-building and her inability to think before she answers questions about her writing. Speaking of Prejudices, I'm I the only one who's not convinced with CC's answer to "Why prejudices against only SOME mundane cultures exists among Shadowhunters"?

European empires of that time brought massive bloodshed to various parts of the world. No one welcomed the British to occupy their territories- there were many wars fought that would eventually make the Brits empire the most powerful.

Idk about Europe but the Victorian era was a period of Rebellions/Battles/Wars for many countries (particularly against colonial powers - World Wars 1&2 are not the only War that was fought throughout history CC), so there must be an increased demonic activity that must have caused a lot of problems for Shadowhunters. It was already established that demonic activities increase when wars happen. Don't you think it would make more sense if the Clave is more annoyed with the Mundanes being white supremacists and waging wars against other Mundanes than to get influenced by it? Like silly little Mundies causing so much trouble to the Shadowhunters with all their wars.

Even if they did get influenced by Mundane ideologies, don't you think that it makes more sense for a Shadowhunter to apply that 'superior race' theory to their species and show more prejudice against the Downwolders and being more violent/rude/ inappropriate towards Downworlders (without breaking the First Accords) becoming a norm at the time? That could explain where Valentine's ideology comes from.

"Clave is influenced by that"

Is CC saying that Clave, the Shadowhunter's governing body consisting of Shadowhunters from across the world (Asians, Africans, Australians, Americans, Europeans) are totally down for the White Skinned Shadowhunters to hold all the power and let them think they are the superior because Mundanes ideologies are influencing them?

The more I think about it the less sense it made!

Well, she brings up the topic of sexism among Shadowhunters to compare both issues, which was hilarious because sexism among Shadowhunters doesn't make sense either.

Overall, I hated the answer she gave. It was stupid at best.

You're right. The plot holes in TSC worldbuilding could've been avoided had CC put more effort into it. In my personal opinion, the inconsistency of CC writing shined throughout the TLH series more than in any other series of TSC.

The part of that answer, “Shadowhunter society is folded into ours, never entirely independent of ours,” seems to only apply to things Clare wants to include in her writing and her characters to have knowledge of. Illnesses both mental and physical having actual names, treatments for them, technology to an extent (as it is disallowed for some reason?)—these are not part of the Nephilim world. Neither is the very basic infrastructure that keeps our societies afloat but anyway.

In her answer, Clare also leaves it pretty vague (or does not go into it at all rather) how the colonialism of the mundane world influences the Clave when the Nephilim generally regard themselves separate from the mundanes and do not understand the mundane ways. How exactly does the “mundane culture”��which there are thousands, mind you—bleed into theirs? “Silly little mundies” is my thought exactly. It’s more a matter of convenience than anything sound to do with the world-building. As it is convenient that the Nephilim reject mundane medicine and technology, for example.

I don’t think a lot that she said there were reflected in her writing, except the most obvious treatment of Charlotte as a woman and Alastair as Persian. It just is fundamentally impossible for me to believe that the Shadowhunters would be in any way sexist among themselves, or have developed such mindsets, because women make half of their force, the very first of them being the first of Iron Sisters who forge all their weapons and are masters of a craft that is, in mundane world, associated with more men than women. I see no consistency as to any of this.

I agree, TLH burns brightly with inconsistency because Clare wanted to implement those period typical mindsets and behavior to her own fictional world always having existed pretty separate from that of the mundane, but never doing the groundwork to justify any of it. Just suspend your disbelief and you’ll be fine, I guess. Also: “Alastair, the son of a suspected murderess and a disgraced and despised Shadowhunter (we’ll see what’s up with Elias in TLH!), does not.” Murderess? What? Was this another retcon?
