Elliot’s name was not announced at the party. He knew it from the first: as he navigated the busy floor, dodging dresses and flapping fans, few people hailed him to share pleasantries. Even as he recognized baron, dame, and cardinal, and the music ebbed to open conversation among the guests, there seemed to be an unwarranted shortage of acknowledging glances and how-do-you-fare's.

Faces he knew closer than some scripture welcomed him. Their warmth reassured him, but he did not come for tranquility. When Lady Ottoline began stroking his hand and nattering about squirrels licking icicles, he balanced his champagne flute on a chair back and floated away.

Gustave le Berre. Lucien Tedalgrinche. Adrien Charroix. The names continued. Karoiseka O'dayla.

Almost every soul stiffened. People paused, their heads swiveled, eyes narrowed. Forks returned to plates and skirt bustles dropped from hands. Whether they looked to the grand doorway or not, every person knew the night would be irrevocably different from this moment. The savior of Eorzea--now savior of Ishgard, after a fact--had arrived, and now gossip must follow her.

She didn't look armed. She didn't look decent. But neither of those things were fully true.

In the frame of the archway, the Warrior of Light was small, intense, and beautiful. Even if her eyes could be described as tired, they were striking first, and the blue of them matched her hair in a way that seemed to prove that this was the woman chosen by Hydaelyn. Reports spoke of a crystal-lined bow with arrows that could pierce dragon scale. Still, few could doubt that if it came to magic, she would not be able to cast without a staff.

It was either bold or ridiculous that she wore no armor. A sleeveless gown was out of fashion whether her gloves bore jewelry or not; somehow the lace at her breast and the tall collar were enough to excuse it. The black skirt of her dress rippled without a petticoat or hoop, sliced on one side from the thigh to the floor, and teasing a sight at her leg as she drifted forward. Once again, the thing that mattered was smaller than the whole: her shoes were a flashing, bright silver, with a thin, curving heel and beaded ankle strap. Perhaps, in the same way, what mattered of her was herself and not her title.

A scary, dark, one-eyed rascal of man was beside her, and he did not look nice, so he did not matter. Relations were impossible to escape in all places but the ballroom, and so Elliot would forget--for the next three bells--that the man had whispered to her in a way that seemed to let him kiss her ear.

As the room tried to seesaw back into nonchalance, Elliot chose sensation.

Perhaps, in a different way, she was kind.

He was the first to speak to her, and the first to be seen doing so.

Lost In Time. Loki/Tony (Frostiron). Word count: 21,700 ongoing

“You messed with time. It tends to mess back. You’ll see.” An accident during The Time Heist sends Tony Stark tumbling through time and space. Tony emerges on a different planet, over a century before where he should be, with no way home. He works to get back to his family the Avengers. While he’s at it, he’ll fix this new timeline too…but more and more time passes and he’s still stranded and he has to make a new life under a new name. A new life that includes Loki in a starring role. Loki was studying the magical arts on Alfheim with his mother’s sister, when a mortal shows up and turns everything upside down. He comes with ill tidings of the future and a determination to change it, and Loki can’t help himself but believe and help him. This mortal is a fascinating puzzle, and Loki itches to put it together. It has -nothing- to do with how drawn he is to the mortal himself.

Neither one knows just how or why their stories are entwined by forces unknown.

Clint did not like what he saw, and he hasn’t been able to let it go. He’s a sucker for a seemingly lost cause. Clint’s mission is to get into Asgard, break Loki out, and get him somewhere safe. If only Loki will cooperate and not take his head off.

Meanwhile, back on Catalina; or, Some Notes from the Latest Hanna-Barbera Character Convocation, Coincident with the Avalon Harbour Underwater Cleanup

(The ensuing documentary to open with Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf in some Hollywood screening room in the vein of the legendary Nosseck’s, with Mildew giving the "start the film" order ... and, following the usual header, opening on a rather splendid drone shot of Avalon and its harbour, scored to Al Jolson's rendition of "Avalon" from back in the day, eventually leading to a shot of Snagglepuss and Huckleberry Hound along "The Wall" along Crescent Street, main drag of Avalon ...)

Thursday evening: In an effort to avoid the likely crowds of divers heading to the Harbour Cleanup, such was advised as the arrival and checkin for the Funtastic World's presence, and in particular such known as the Cahuenga Pass Funtastic Divers--Wally Gator, Hokey Wolf and Ding-a-Ling, Breezly Bruin, Peter Potamus (arriving via the Magic Zeppelin, and parking same at the Airport in the Sky), Magilla Gorilla, Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har-Har, the Hair Bear Bunch and Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels--representative of The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera in such an endeavour among the Catalina diver confraternity on the last Saturday of February. As for such considered Non-Diving Participants, we find the likes of Ruff and Reddy, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Snooper and Blabber, Top Cat and clowder, Touché Turtle and Dum-Dum, the Goofy Guards, Penelope Pitstop, The Banana Splits (who were overheard remarking at how much had changed since a "romp" video of theirs was made some years before), the Cattanooga Cats (natch), Bristlehound, the Skatebirds, Undercover Elephant and The King and crew.

In an informal draw, the Cahuenga Pass Funtastic Divers get rooming assignments with the Catalinan girlfriends of TC and crew (as in Sabrina, Jayne, Lola, Jessamaine, Joleen and Samantha), and at any rate, sharing rooms for Harbour Cleanup weekend may not quite be Airbnb, but at least the experience of spending time among a few of Catalina's resident cats is guaranteed to be something to write home about, as if joining in an underwater cleanup of Avalon Harbour wasn't interesting enough, hoping to find something unusual when it came to the trash left by boaters or even day-trippers (notwithstanding the boats from San Pedro and Long Beach in particular now arriving at the Cabrillo Mole, on the south end of Avalon).

Friday: Essentially an "open day" to not only browse around and shop at will, but also to encourage the Cahuenga Pass Funtastic Divers to have dive gear checked (especially air lines and tanks) and air tanks refilled ahead of the expected Friday-evening and Saturday-morning rush among other divers likely to arrive later in the day. Not to mention an opportunity to experience Catalina as the diver's paradiso, long known only by way of the glass-bottom boat excursions, to test such out. Which, considering the coolish waters of the Pacific at the time of year, were enough for some to feel slightly euphoric (and, hence, encounter "those feelings" between the legs) at such legendary underwater beauty (although, recall, Snagglepuss and Crazy Claws, during their mission to sell Florida on Wisconsin Dells, experienced some spectacular coral reefs off the Florida Keys--and Jabberjaw in the bargain). Especially Captain Caveman, himself fond of the freedive (and with the Teen Angels in the SCUBA and GoPro getups recording all) close to where the Chinese junk Ningpo caught fire in 1915 during a movie shoot, itself part of Catalina lore (the outline of its hull marked by sea cabbage plants).

Late Friday afterlunch: A plein-air press conference was set up involving the Cahuenga Pass Funtastic Divers at the Green Pleasure Pier in Avalon, attracting especially such among the mainstream press otherwise expected to cover a dull and somewhat predictable Harbour Cleanup in aid of the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber at Two Harbors, and the responses couldn't be what you'd otherwise expect. Witness such exchanges as:

A REPORTER: For Wally Gator ... how would you compare Catalina to back in the Florida Everglades?

WALLY GATOR: The waters off Catalina are definitely rather chilly in alligator skin, don't you know? [Laughter]

PETER POTAMUS, responding to a reporter's enquiry: I have to acknowledge where we hippopotami can be rather graceful just holding breath underwater ... and having done a few dives with SCUBA myself, the experience doesn't seem any different. In fact, I just arrived via certain parts of Polynesia otherwise unknown to the civilised, and believe you me, even with naked natives, the diving experience can get to be irresistable. Even with just a single gulp of air!

HAIR BEAR, for the Hair Bear Bunch: I have to admit we learned diving "on a lark," as if our Secret Surf Spot--which we'll only say is somewhere near Malibu--wasn't just for surfing only. And I have to acknowledge that learning the "duck dive" into a wave was crazy enough.... [Laughs from the press]

BREEZLY BRUIN: Can you imagine diving into Nome Harbour in the middle of winter, with the water barely above freezing and only four hours of daylight to work around, doing salvage and cleanup in same?

A REPORTER: I assume that such is the premise of the Harbour Cleanup tomorrow.

HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, as moderator: It certainly is.

DEE-DEE, as part of the Teen Angels: We do admit that Cavey, despite his origins, can do some serious freediving, and feel rather wonderful about it!

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN "himself": Cavey love freediving!! Cavey can't resist sensation!! [Laughter from the press]

TAFFY: I should apologise for the broken English that Cavey-Wavey can use when speaking, but then again, such shouldn't be taken against his diving prowess!

DEE-DEE: I have to concur with Taffy there....

MAGILLA GORILLA: First, it was me becoming King of the Surfers, all because of an attempt to reunite a surfboard falling off a Woodie with its owner ... and now, expanding my horizons with SCUBA! (Which, I admit, has been off-and-on ... but I do enjoy snorkelling as well!)

Friday evening: Welcoming reception and seafood buffet, in Catalinan stylee ... and remarks from Snagglepuss as follows:

They say "cat" is the first word in Catalina ... and for some reason or another, you have some of our feline friends taking a shine to this The Magic Isle every now and then ... especially Top Cat and his crew, who have spent some wonderful weekends from time to time here ... [Introduces TC and crew to the stage] ... and who can still remember when a drive-time radio gag imagining the Cattanooga Cats performing in the Casino Ballroom actually led to a serious concert here that sold out within minutes? [Whereupon the quartet of Country, Kitty Jo, Groove and Scoots come on stage] But it seems that with us Hanna-Barberian Funtastics, things can come up serendipitiously. Like when yours truly and my fellow Funtastic, Huckleberry Hound, meet for conversation, coffee even ... and sometimes lunch. And don't try to ask how such interesting opportunities for Character Convocations seem to come up, as with the Truth or Consequences Fiesta ... the Minneapolis Aquatennial ... the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival ... and last time out, the Wo-Zha-Wa festival in Wisconsin Dells!!

I have to concur with Snagglepuss there: Coming across such interesting specimens of events for which a Character Convocation can coincide is a tricky one. Though I will acknowledge that the first such, in no less a place than Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, came about when I stumbled across an item about how the late Ralph Edwards, who created the show "Truth or Consequences" for the radio, would use the annual Fiesta--originally conceived in 1950 to honour the renaming of Hot Springs, New Mexico as Truth or Consequences to honour the show's tenth on-air anniversary--as a showcase for established and emerging Hollywood talent, inviting them to join in the annual Fiesta. And what better way to pay ur-homage, so to speak, than to have as many of us Funsensically Funtastic types as possible "join in" Fiesta in our own unique sort of way?

No doubt many of you still have interesting memories galore of our past Convocations, and I guarantee this one with the Harbour Cleanup will be no different.

Which would be followed by a few announcements relative to the Harbour Cleanup proper, in particular a reminder that a Mandatory Safety Briefing for all participants will be at 9 on Saturday morning, the which was not loss on the Cahuenga Pass Funtastic Divers ... with suggestion that such might also want to get in a last-minute air tank refill, equipment check and certification check following the breakfast buffet, arranged for 7 in the morning. (Non-Diving Participants likely to be "out and about" in meet-and-greet mode during the cleanup proper along Crescent Street.) Divers also being reminded that the cleanup proper will be between 9:30 and 11, with divers expected to leave the water by 11 and have their finds brought to the check-in tent.

That evening, "invitation only" jam sessions with both The Banana Splits and the Cattanooga Cats could be had in a couple of back-alley hotel bars ... and in the case of the former, you could just imagine the banana Italian sodas and the memories flowing freely in equal measure, even as a slight chill with light drizzle dampened that harbour town of Avalon....

“You'd better see for yourself,” FRIDAY said as she threw up several articles. When Tony dared to peek a look he groaned. Laughing back at him was his own face as he seemed to hug a smug looking Barnes, topped by the header “Secret affair revealed?” There were more pictures, of them walking together through the ballroom, the two of them close together and staring out into the garden. The headlines weren’t any better. “Lovebirds seeking some alone time?” “Two sides of the war: modern Romeo and Juliet?’ And Tony's favourite: “True reason for Avengers’ fall out: Iron Man stole Cap's love interest!”

When Tony saves James from being harassed during their welcome home gala, the press smells a scoop. Instead of being outraged, the general public reacts overwhelmingly positive to the news, so much so they decide to play along for the time being. But how do you tell the man you orphaned that you might actually like him? Why would James play along for any reason other than feeling in debt? And how are they supposed to mend bridges and be a team again when Steve is so angry all the time?

 My obsession/love affair with Martha’s Vineyard started early in my life.  I was around 2 and a half in this picture and this was already my second trip.

My connection to MV was through my mother who although was born in Maine was raised on MV.   She went to Oak Bluffs high school (there was no regional high school, each town had its own back then) and after graduating moved to NJ where she met my father and quickly converted him into an MV fan.

We stayed with my godparents in Oak Bluffs every summer.    Life on MV was so different from Newark, NJ where I spent the other part of my existence.   My mother and I would take the train from NY to Woods Hole in June,  my dad would arrive for the entire month of August and we’d all sadly leave the beginning of September.

My summers were filled with trips to the beach in Oak Bluffs… endless rides on the Flying Horses… ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave… popcorn at Darling’s… fairs and parades… at least one trip to Gay Head (Aquinnah)… visiting relatives in Indian Hill… movies… setting pins at the bowling alley in Oak Bluffs… endless hours at the Oak Bluffs library… Bible school at the Tabernacle… Illumination Night… and one especially painful memory of my first and only dance lesson at the Tivoli ballroom where the Oak Bluffs police department now stands.

These are just a few snippets of memories and stories I’d like to share.  Hope whoever reads them finds them as enjoyable as I did experiencing them.’

MV Obsession isn’t strictly about the Vineyard anymore but like the header says, it’s ‘almost all the time.’

STRICTLY COME WRESTLING PART 1

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the story of Show 59 of the now re-badged #100showyear which took me to the sunny seaside skies of Blackpool for PCW and their double header of a beer garden show and a show at the home of Week 9 of Strictly Come Dancing - The Tower Ballroom.

First of all though as ever in this blog it wasnt straight to the wrestling, it was off to The Seven Stars Wetherspoons in the Printworks for one of their graps famous breakfasts sadly not with a pint of Guiness but with a Latte as I was being a very good boy - total cost of £6.45 for this and filled a whole, very much a 7 on the spoons brekkie scale.

The train to Blackpool was full of Sheffield Wednesday fans in our carriage who were travelling to Preston for the 1st day of the season, thankfully the football gods were looking down on them as the Sheff Wednesday fans tweaked their nipples with their tone deaf singing and general boistrous antics to sentence their team to defeat. Thank god for Godley & Creme on my Deezer.

Arriving in Blackpool, the sight of the venue not being open due to a venue issue - britwres never goes smoothly 😞. So whilst we were waiting it was across to the local Walkabout for a sticky floor and an overpriced half pint of Heineken (£2.55), then to the Litten Tree for a £3.65 pint of Stella which was a bit timny in taste but hey ho!.

Leaving the pub at 120pm to see the show had just started 50 minutes late, but give PCW their due they actually kept people updated, some companies just dont bother. So here is a quick rundown of what went down at The Beer Garden Bash:

Seymour Gains beat Arcadian in around 5 minutes with The Chris Linay Special (Torture Rack) RACK EM!! Seymour looking good here, as mentioned in previous blogs much improved from last year.

Philip Michael wearing his t-shirt due to either the breezy conditions or not wanting to get sunburn like he did last time beat Sheikh El-Sham in a good 10 minute match. El-Sham is the best of the 2 North West Sheikhs and has a great look bodywise and isnt too bad in the ring - could be mistaken for David Haye. Sheikh also has a knack for winking at me during the match, probably because i always boo him, with time he could do alright for himself.

Martin Kirby beat Dave Birch in maybe the best wrestling match of the show with the Sable Bomb. Birch is another example of improvement from around 6 months ago and more than held his own with the more experienced Kirby. Good Stuff 🖒

Next up was the battle of the female titans it was Lauren vs Rhio. Now these two at the start of their academy careers had a couple of royal stinkers that had you doing more head shaking and covering your eyes than 80s legend Bully off Bullseye. Now even though this might not have been a classic, Rhio is showing improvement in the ring and is probably better than Lauren now. Lauren got the win here with the cheeky bridge roll up but clearly from my vantage point you could see Rhio’s shoulders up - this was the start of a few dodgy decisions from referee Kalom.

Second to last match was Jake Long vs James Finn - an alright match here with both lads showing good offence here with Long picking up the deadly Cheeky Roll Up win on Finn even after misjudging a SSP.

Main event was all kinds of daftness with Ashton Smith portraying T-Bone with all the trimmings i.e bad irish accent vs T-Bone portraying Ashton with all the trimmings i.e pumping fist, trunks that were a size too small and painted on black abs as per Dragon Gate star - Cyber Kong.

This was very much everything an afternoon show match should be and what PCW are great for on their Hangover show, just silliness including Ashton hitting his hand many times on ring posts and that object where you stub cigs out on. T-Bone invite audience members to hit Ashton in the stomach which they duly onliged until Athers (Joe Atherton) poked Ashton in the eyes via the top of his head - OH JOE YOU HEEL.

End of the match came when T-Bone used the Go To Sleep knee on Ashton to get the 1-2-3 to end the hilarity to send the 40+ crowd home happy.

Overall a fun show and definetely enough there to keep me entertained. Certainly Kirby vs Birch and the Main Event if they see the light of day are ones you should see.

Beer prices - £4 for a can of Magners, £4 for 300ml Budweiser (Multipack bottles - SHAME)

ITS GOT TO BEEEEEEEEEEEE KEITH LEE!!

Hello everyone and welcome to the story of Show 58 of the #80showyear that took me to Camden for Progress Wrestling Chapter 53!! First off it was time to get to London via the usual diversions - Rochdale and Manchester and as ever a decent gathering of The North West Graps Gang struggling our way through the packed carriages of Coach A-E before finding our way to the safe haven of Coach F which was practically empty, so many tables ahoy for eating, charging and usually in our Geoffs case - Sleeping 😴. On the train, food of choice was a nice prawn salad from Marks and Spencer accompanied with some flavoured water (just to point out the litre bottle of this water was 79p, whilst the 500ml bottle was £1.30 work that one out 😮), also a tub of wasabi peas which i have some strange affection for and a can of some Grapefruit Wheat beer from the corner shop in Ancoats (£2.79) - this drink was disgusting with the taste of what sweaty socks smell like after a run, thankfully i have survived to tell the tale but yes Avoid like the plague - YUCK!! Arriving in Camden, it was a trip to usual haunt - The Black Heart where i had a can of Mr Blue - A blueberry saison which is a lovely drink full of fruit but at £7.50 a can, it can burn a hole in your wallet. The Bugles tune - "Video Killed The Radio Star" came on, which prompted a tune from our mouths that suits "Perennial Canvasback" David Starr whenever he is wrestling in the UK. "EVERYBODY BEATS DAVID STARR" X3 you can sing it in your head to get the effect. Drinks done it was off to The Ballroom ready for the early dark match start, which was between 2 trainees - Connor Mills vs Spike Trivet whos character is supposed to be very Tory like carrying a bottle of Lanson Champagne. Mills even though he had some decent moves, didnt have many redeeming features about him but will probably pick that up with time. Trivet got the win in an ok match. First up on the main show was CCK defeating Extra Talented in an alright 10 minute match with both teams looking much better than the outing they were involved in Manchester the other week and reportedly the Fight Club Pro show on Friday. So it looks like CCK vs BSS 3 will happen at Ally Pally but we will have to see. Next was NO FUNNNAAHH Damien Dunne beating Chuck Mambo in a very good match, Mambo has very much improved over the last year and is looking a good hand that i would like to see on more shows elsewhere. I remember once saying to him at Tidal that i wish he was back at Futureshock as his character would suit that audience. Sadly though for Chuck he got Chucked by Damien and fell in around 8 minutes. THE WIRRAL WET DOGS/CESSPOOL vs Never Say Die was next and was what it should have been with the highly experienced Gibson and Drake toying with their youthful opponents. The Wet Dogs could be top contenders to come once CCK win the tag belts later on in the year. It was the BATTLE OF THE RIOTS next woth a much slimmer and agile James Davis vs Rob Lynch in a excellent face vs face match with both guys having their fans, i was cheering for Davis but that would soon turn later on in the match. Davis submitted Lynch with a modified sleeper, but the after match is what will be talked about here with Lynch sort of announcing his retirement and winding down in October and got on his knees weeping to JD but OH WHATS THIS! Davis wallops Lynch round the head with a cricket bat and their it was the Turn, fantastic stuff this with me thinking it could have been the other way round. During the interval i got a Chuck Mambo badge for £2 which i can now add to my bag. First up in the 2nd half was Pete Dunne vs Jack Sexsmith in a really good 8 minute match trying to get Jack over as a threat to the unstoppable Bruiserweight. But for all of Sexsmiths effort he fell to the bitter end and the 1-2-3. The next match i cant say i saw much of as i went to the loo and the bar, so only really caught the dissension with Havoc and Haskins after losing to British Strong Style. Little gripe here, i know they are trying to build the "partners not getting along" storyline but i didnt agree with them getting a tag title shot even though they lost in their only outing vs The Origin at the last London show. Next was a really good womens match between Toni Storm and Candice La Rae. One noticeable thing for me here was even though they are near enough the same height Storm was Visibly larger (hench) than Candice, just took me by surprise. Toni ended the match with 3 piledrivers to finish off Candice. With Toni winning, i am a bit non plussed as to who is getting the shot at Ally Pally - maybe Jinny again 😕 Main event was an absolute barnburner between Travis Banks and BIG Keith Lee. Some of the chops here from Keith were some of the evilest chops i have seen all year, you only have to go onto Banks Twitter to see what the effects are of Keith Lee hitting you with his panhandles. Including chops, this involved German Suplexes, PowerBombs, Spirit Bombs - The Lot!! Banks fell to the Spirit Bomb after a distraction from adversary Pete Dunne. Great Great Match!! A beatdown ensued on Banks with BSS fending off CCK before the Ballroom lost its SHIT with SPPT returning with new visa's in hand to save the day to help their mate. This was another one of them moments you had to be their to see - hence my voice is feeling it today which might have been because of my usual seranading Keith Lee ITS GOT TO BEEEEEEEEEEEE KEITH LEE X2 This thankfully got over with the Camden masses unlike the supposedly niche HouseMartins. Beer Prices - £4.90 a pint for Camden Pale usual fare which never changes. Overall a really good show being in the company of the usual good group of guys and gals.
