“Something’s happened,” I told my wife. She is a veteran of watching me try to fix my body. I told her: Where before my brain had been screaming, screaming, at air-raid volume—there was sudden silence. It was confusing. Would it last?
I went alone that night to a Chinese restaurant, the old-school kind with tables, and ordered General Tso’s. I ate the broccoli, a few pieces of chicken, and thought: too gloopy. I left it unfinished, went home in confusion, a different kind of sleepwalker. I passed bodegas and shrugged. At an office I observed the stack of candies and treats with no particular interest.
Decades of struggle—poof. Apparently the Mounjaro molecule targets the same hormone as Ozempic, plus a second one, so it doesn’t just stimulate insulin production but also boosts energy output.
“I urgently need,” I thought, “an analog synthesizer.” Something to fill the silence where food used to be. Every night for weeks I spent four, five hours twisting Moog knobs. Not making music. Just droning, looping, and beep-booping. I needed something to obsess over, to watch YouTube videos about. I needed something to fail at every night to feel normal. And I was also manic, dysregulated, and wide-eyed, sleeping five hours a night, run-walking, with pressured speech; my friends, happy for me but confused, called me “cocaine Paul.” I bought more synthesizers off a guy from Craigslist, meeting him in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with a grand in cash. A body is not designed to lose 25 pounds in eight weeks, starting during the holidays. Beep. Boop.
With the relief come new anxieties. What if it stops working and I slide back into the vale of infinite noise? Compounding that, these drugs are hard to get, both because of supply chain problems and because they are being prescribed off-label for weight loss instead of diabetes. I can’t get a steady prescription from the pharmacy. I’m developing a rationing plan, stretching from an injection every seven days to one every eight or nine to build up a stockpile.

(Photo of me and my husband by @mettieostrowski on insta)
Caroline Polachek as a Sociological Phenomena and why it’s Important to Gatekeep Twinks.
So there I was (picture unrelated) waiting for the train at 10:30 PM on a Sunday so I can go take some extra estradiol from a generous friend at a gay bar, full incognito, wearing a fucking hoodie, I’m so tired I spent all day working on the flier for my new absurdist drag bingo because I and everyone I know are walking parodies of bushwick transexuals.
Train is taking forever so I have some time to kill, and I decide (d? Should I care about continuity? I am not a writer, I’m an author.)
Anyway I decided to put the recent Caroline Polachek album on, which is big for me because I have been a bit of a Caroline Polachek denier. I listened to Chairlift very casually when I was a teenager but I was far from die hard and since then I’ve kind of just thought of her as an unfortunate but all too common case of a talented musician being so aggressively HAIM-Pilled that it’s practically deafening. I say this as a dyke with love for all dykes❤️
Also the “new queen of artpop” claims coming from the exact type of 5’8 naturally dirty blonde he/they’s I’ve made it my life goal to disagree with at all times are really not helping her case for me.
Because here’s my thing. I’m a Kate Bush ride or die, surprising I know. I have I’ve always been a coward tattooed below my collarbones like the only 1% I’ll ever be a part of is her Spotify listeners.
But here’s the tea, if you’re not ready and willing to hee haw like a fucking donkey on a song that’s probably about some form of domestic abuse you just aren’t the new queen of artpop. I do make the rules and to be honest the only people in pop music right now not named lady fucking gaga who has the panache, the gaul, the unwavering commitment to pull stunts and shenanigans on that level are Ethel Cain and Lingua Ignota, especially since FKA Twigs decided she wanted to live a happy and fulfilling life (and good for her, thank you for all the good times queen)
And Caroline is simply not there, she’s too squeaky clean and widely appealing to go to those absurd and ugly places that make a Bjork.
Now my personal cocomelon/surrogate father figure Anthony Fantano the Internet’s Busiest Music Nerd did love her album, and I usually agree with his takes (mbdtf is mid you just love it because it was baby’s first concept album and you have a deep yearning to return to a time in your life where you first realized music could be art) BUT WHILE I AGREE WITH MANY OF HIS TAKES (sorry) my one glaring exception is that he never takes how cunt something is into consideration while evaluating a piece of music, and by that I do mean that he said gaga peaked at fame monster and 212 is the only good azealia banks song. He doesn’t have the tools to engage with music in a fag like manor, so when we’re dealing with music for gays, I don’t trust him.
And then last night I saw a Drag Queen named The Illustrious Pearl perform welcome to my island as a showgirl vampire wearing rhinestoned knee pads and frankly if Caroline is good enough for her she’s certainly good enough for me.
And I’m gonna be really vulnerable here, I really enjoyed the album. Like, there’s about as much art in it’s pop as cranberry in a gay bar vodka cran but it’s damn good pop and the art adds a nice little aftertaste.
I believe is definetely my favorite, those Rhythm Nation/Mortal Kombat ass synth hits always make me convulse (America Has A Problem is my favorite track off Renaissance) (it took me a whole 2 minutes to spell renaissance right) but I also like welcome to my island a lot and I at least liked everything else except for Billions which sounds like a song that was rejected from The Sensual World because Kate would never release a song that non-violent.
But it was cute. I have a meeting with a literal church upstate that is trying to book me for their pride drag show tomorrow and one of them just texted me “Brainstorming with the Holy Spirit is so exciting and so fruitful ✝️💜✝️) and I believe those synth hits on I Believe will carry me through my challenges tomorrow. Love Down.
Xoxo

Top 10 Cats 2022
By Dora Blount
Scratch and Sniff, world’s best cats, turned 6 this year.
Momo is my very special neighbor in the backyard side of my building. He has been visiting me for many years and enjoys gardening, being petted and held. He’s very vocal too.
Pillow Cat, East Village. Pillow is the proprietor of Pillow Cat Books in the East Village, a store that sells books about animals. Have I died and gone to heaven?!
Ratty, East Village. Ratty is the cat in residence at Casey Rubber Stamps. She’s not too approachable but that’s ok, this is New York. I like her sassy attitude.
Hollywood Forever Cemetery Cats, Los Angeles. It turns out that the cats at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles are hiding in plain sight. After looking high and low I was about to give up and leave when I saw one near the fence hedges, then another, and another, and another!
Ollie at Warren T Real Estate, East Village. Ollie was extremely cute and looking for his forever home in the window of Warren T Real Estate. Hopefully he found someone who cherishes him and gives him the love he deserves.
Miami Beach Cats. Miami Beach is home to many cat colonies and many seem to be well cared for. On one residential street late one night, every cat on the block was waiting at the end of their respective driveway. It was magical and mysterious.
Bonnie and Clyde at Pigeons on Broadway, Brooklyn. Bonnie and Clyde are two of several very special cats that work at the Pigeons on Broadway shop in Bushwick. Pigeons on Broadway is one of the last remaining pigeon supply shops in NYC and is a good source for all your bulk bird seed needs.
Woodstock Cat on Rock. This beautiful white cat was a majestic vision sitting coolly on a rock as the sun set, surveying his kingdom in the Catskills.
Willow at the White House. Welcome new First Cat! Why haven’t we heard more about your new life in the White House? We the people need to see the cat!

here are some of the songs that soundtracked my summer
maps by the yeah yeah yeahs because i have a secret theory that you must pay attention to the songs that play in the background of a first date because they might be premonitions. it was one of the first that came on the day we met. you were quieter then and everyone knew your name. i overslept far past my welcome that first night and maybe that should have been more telling than the song. maybe i shouldn’t have given myself over so quickly. maybe i should’ve listened to tyler. maybe maybe maybe a lot of things. still, i laughed the whole way home. my kind's your kind, i'll stay the same.
acolyte by slaughter beach, dog because it is one of the only unabashed love songs i can listen to several times in a row without recoiling. it is the best song to wash the dishes to, to walk into the sunset with, to believe in kinder things because of.
group four by massive attack because the man i was seeing at the time played it once at the bar he worked at. i visited several nights a week, it became part of my routine: something to rush around for, a soft place to land. i was mesmerized from the jump, it was all i could fixate on for its full eight minute runtime — the song and also him, flitting back and forth in the dim red light. (i played it for S a few days later, saying it was the best thing i’d ever heard — he didn’t like it, said it was scary.) i remember going into the bathroom and stabilizing myself in the mirror prematurely thinking that i’d miss coming here when it all ended. each time i was met with eyes a little more vacant. a self-fulfilling prophecy. (i’m at a different bar alone now writing this. your coworker spotted me, came over, and reminded me that you’re working there tonight. i shook my head and he said “oops” three times.)
lost angel nights by james blake and alphabet city by the national because they say the quiet part loud. they made me feel justified in my self-abandonment and my masterful act of pretending to be okay with distance and mistreatment. “away from me is just fine.” “if anybody asks, i’ll say you’re coming back.” “i’ll still be here when you come back from space.” it’s not true. it shouldn’t be. but love is this way sometimes.
montana by youth lagoon because J brought it up around 3am at a bar in bushwick and before then i hadn’t thought of it in many, many years. she joked that i should play it next to your ear while you were asleep that night because it might rewire your brain. i laughed hard then but later it made me want to cry. a couple months after, her and i sat on a couch backstage with T before he played a sold out show in brooklyn. i told him i think i might’ve met you just so i could meet her. i do believe it.
this house by japanese breakfast because a friend posted it on her instagram story right after going through a bad breakup and i listened to it eating dinner alone at the neighborhood fast casual korean restaurant staring out the open front door while hot air hit my face and it felt like i was hearing music for the first time. what if one day i don’t know you? what if one day you leave? i could sense it was coming but i came over for a kiss despite it all. i really learned about liquid courage with you and i probably never needed to befriend it so closely. when we were together, my head was always spinning; my nose always stung.
very overdue goodbye by runo plum because my friends all know i prefer dragged out, tortuous storylines over clean-cut endings and rightfully shake their heads. i’ve never gotten over a thing in my life, i tell david in a frankly unhinged voice message that closes with me laughing pathetically, squeezing in at the end that i hope the baby is healthy. it is the last friday night of summer. he says that 26 is the new 18, that i am the one making bad decisions, *i* am not the bad decision. he tells me to stand up for myself. it takes me several weeks but i listen. you made being alone feel so clean. i see you more as a pile-up of my own grief.
to me it was by samia because the guitar gives me goosebumps all over. eliza and i have used the format “everything with ____ is totally fine/don’t freak out, it’s gonna be alright” back and forth all month to punctuate every nervous interaction. we ended up being wrong a lot of the time, there was absolutely reason to freak out. samia was right though; maybe i didn’t need tequila for that. someday i think i’ll look back and remember this as a good time. right now it just hurts.
blue flower by mazzy star because it reminds me of my favorite line in that other song that makes me think about that other guy: i had a fever when i met you; now you make me cool. you were a superstar in your own private movie and i wanted just a minor part. ang is the first person to call it by its name: cruelty. i sweltered and seethed while you slipped away.
street rat by blondshell because i fell back into my old habits as quickly as i’d tried to kick them as soon as you entered the scene. if a doctor put her hands over my liver she would tell me my resentment’s getting…bigger. i felt a lump, hard and unforgiving, growing there. my back tooth turned brown and started rotting the day you disappeared. Z yelped at me from across the street when he saw me and said i’m withering in front of his eyes. it’s a race to see who dies first and you’ve got five years on me. (as i’m typing this, the bar has begun playing sepsis by blondshell. it feels almost evil. it really should’ve taken a whole lot less to turn me off.)
split up by boyish because i could have said all of this word-for-word in that text message. i kept it short for both of our dignities.
aspirin - slight return by tropical fuck storm because christian responded with just the link to that after i ranted for 5 minutes straight about my rapid descent into madness. it was a perfect response. i’m a harrowing rest stop for the men i date. disarming enough to trip them up. not enough to make them stay.
moon song by phoebe bridgers because after three years of knowing it so well, i heard it entirely differently one night and it nearly rendered me immobile. you asked to walk me home but i had to carry you. you pushed me in and now my feet can’t touch the bottom of you. i would have stuck around, by the way. like a dog with a bird at your door.

AO3 MASTERLIST X
October 14
Rue is hunched over a box behind the receptionist's desk, bending her knees, getting ready to lift. Without thinking, Bucky strides behind the desk and lifts it, effortlessly, for her.
“James–”
“Bucky.”
“No, James,” she hisses. He sees her trying to remain mad, despite fighting off a smile. Suddenly, her hands are over his eyes. Her fingertips are cold. “There’s confidential information there!”
He actually chuckles. “I’ll keep my eyes shut.”
“How do I know that?” she says exasperated.
“You can trust me.”
“I can trust you?” she echoes. “I trust no one!”
(He wants to tell her that’s a good instinct she has going for her there, but he holds back. What he should be telling her is he’s done a lot of missions with impaired visuals, so moving a box to the desk with closed eyes was nothing.)
“You can trust me,” he insists, making a show of screwing his eyes shut. “Guide me.”
He feels her hesitation, then her hands over his. He feels her gently steer him, her little shuffles as a careful attempt to walk backward in her platform shoes. Again, he could laugh.
When he feels the edge of the table, he sets the box down and, with hands up in surrender, he backs away, eyes still closed. She guides him back around the desk.
(This time, her hands are more confidently on his waist.)
“This,” she gestures to the area around her, “is off limits. Don’t come behind the desk.” She peers over at the closed office doors.
“You could say thank you.” The cheeky retort is out of his mouth before he can stop it.
“What I could do is lose my job due to HIPAA violations!” He doesn’t know what that means, but he sees her battle panic and amusement. “So, thank you, Mr. Super Soldier Man, but I’d be more thankful if you didn’t get my ass fired.”
(She’s funny.)
“They won’t fire you,” he says. She raised a brow. “You’re the best receptionist here.”
“Are you flirting me, James?” she says distractedly, pulling a file from the box and perusing it.
“Oh, am I ‘James’ now?”
“For the foreseeable future.” She looks at him through her lashes, a playful scorn.
(He sees her flush, but she’s being bold. They both are.)
“Raynor mentioned it,” he admits, pushing his hair out of his face. “That time, last week, when she asked you to do a list of things in the middle of my session, and you’d said you already did them.”
(But, he thinks, to answer your question - yes, I am flirting with you.)
////
One of Sam’s texts is a location. He sends Bucky activities to do, things to check out, despite living in Washington D.C.
There’s an old school boxing gym in Bushwick that’ll keep your membership on the DL.
(Bucky has to Google what ‘on the DL’ means.)
Tell them I sent you, they’ll take care of you.
Bucky finds himself in the neighborhood one Tuesday, twenty minutes after the gym has closed, but he sees the lights still on. He knocks, cupping his hands to the glass to see inside. An older man, probably in his sixties, comes to the door with a broom.
“We’re closed,” he starts, but Bucky holds his empty hands up.
“Sam Wilson told me to come,” Bucky rushes. “He told me you’d be willing to let me work out here. I’m James – uh, Bucky Barnes.”
“He said you might stop by.” The man gives him a sly smile, like he knows something about Bucky, but Bucky assumes Sam talked about him.
“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t tell him he was right,” Bucky jokes.
The man grins, taking Bucky’s outstretched prosthetic hand. “I’m George. Welcome to Fogwell’s Gym.”
George lends him a pair of boxing gloves and some tape. He tells Bucky, tonight, he’ll stay for an hour, but eventually, he doesn’t mind cutting him a key. He mentions that ‘his friend’ used to work out here from time to time, too.
(He also gives Bucky his condolences.)
When Bucky tells him he can’t really pay for a membership right now, George claps a hand on his shoulder, gripping at the metal.
“Son, I’d be damned if I let a hero pay me a dime.”
(Bucky remembers these words for years to come.)
Bucky tries the boxing gloves, his muscle memory stronger than his actual memory. Images of him sparring with his dad and teaching his sister a few moves flicker in and out as he uses his teeth to tighten the laces. The glove feels uncomfortable over his prosthetic, but he gives the sandbag a few good natured jabs.
Eventually, he just wraps his right hand in tape and lays into the bag. He hears the support beams strain from his blows, but he’s possessed by something deep. Punch after punch, he feels the tightness in his chest build until he realizes he’s been holding his breath. When George goes to tell him time’s up, he finds Bucky on the ground, gasping for air.
George asks, “Are you okay, son?” and Bucky laughs in wheezes.
(For once, he’s winded because he’s out of shape and not because of a panic attack.)

Big Ups reunion show with Washer, Mulva, and Muscle at Market Hotel
Tumblr media
Full gallery available on my website
On Saturday, October 26, 2024, Big Ups performed their first concert in New York City in five years at Market Hotel in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The post-hardcore band reunited to commemorate the tenth anniversary of their album, Eighteen Hours of Static which was put out by Dead Labour a decade ago, and was recently re-released on vinyl and on cassette with songs remixed by various artists. They also performed a warm up show at Angry Mom Records in Ithaca, NY on October 24th.
The first time I saw and captured the group was back on November 1, 2012 at Death By Audio; two years after their formation. This show took place a few days after Hurricane Sandy hit New York City and was a welcome way to experience community after such a destructive storm. Big Ups’ previous hometown performance before going on hiatus took place in January 2019 at Bowery Ballroom and photos from that concert are available on Flickr in this gallery. [Note: I originally captured BTS images, portraits, and live sets for BTRtoday which unfortunately ceased existing in March 2020]
For their reunion gig, Big Ups were joined by acts from various cities along the east coast. Up first were Muscle, a trio from Baltimore, followed by Mulva (Providence & NYC), and Washer (Philadelphia & NYC), who also performed at Big Ups’ 2019 goodbye show. During Washer’s set, Mike Quigley shared that he was “really fucking stoked” to be playing with Big Ups again. He joked that it wasn’t for them, Washer wouldn’t be a band because he saw them perform and thought “we gotta rip them off!” He also shared that Amar Lal (Big Ups’ guitarist) brought him to his first ever show at Market Hotel twenty years ago and declared, “hey, look at us now!” Lal also joined the duo briefly during one song to play guitar before Quigley switched from bass to guitar for the remainder of their set.
Big Ups’ reunion setlist was comprised of songs from their albums plus a brand new song, which was the first of their two song encore. Vocalist Joe Galarraga stated on stage that someone said the evening felt like a high school reunion. Many of us in the audience, now half-a decade older, returned to one of the few independent, all ages spaces that still remain in the town where the band began for just one night to witness them once again.

Donation callout (NAPPY STUDIO)
When I first got to Cape Town b4 I came to Obs, a white American in my program described it to me as the “Bushwick” of Cape Town and that is Scarily accurate because its the same decreptid white ppl colonizing by starting soulessess businesses!!
If you need somewhere to create in Cape Town come to NAPPY STUDIO in Obs. Two beautiful spirits have activated a space to replenish Obs of the soul that they r attacking!!
Message from Fabian Arries:
Greetings and love
I have exciting news to share with you. Me and Sanele are currently occupying a small studio space in observatory, the main idea around the space is building and taking ownership of our independence and fight against the gentrification of our cultural creative hubs in Obs , a space that remembers.
The idea is to provide services that cater to independence. Whether you are a band or cultural movement and looking to make merchandise ,from posters, to screen printed t-shirts or perhaps you want to make a custom piece of clothing.
Nappy studio serves as a meet to your production needs.
Nappy Records (sounds of Alkebulan)
A record wall with sounds from all parts of Africa, with three picks a week to shed light on, the idea with the record wall is to archive and shed light on music from the core roots of Africa. The importance of this wall is a key factor in the course of our liberation as people of African soil and descent.
We're not selling the archive but we definitely have a few crates on sale.
(Sounds of Alkebulan)
Small gatherings that allow and cater for the exploration of African music, as we invite you to come listen to our archive of records. We might invite sounds of Alkebulan selektas to share their collections and music as time goes on but you get the vibe, yes ? :)
Nappy books
A library of pan African and traditional African literature (contributions and consignment collaborations welcome)
Nappy Wardrobe
Operation Khataza Band merchandise , a forward roots liberation inspired ltd edition wardrobe and other interesting collectables.
(Open to housing bands and cultural movements in our community's merchandice)
Okay so now that you have an idea of where we are headed with the space , we come to our call for help. We have an idea of how we want the space to look, with the simplest and cheapest materials. Wood pallets and nails.
Deposit for the space has stretched us a bit so we're asking for help, whether it be a small monetary donation or perhaps a spare pallet or decent wood you might have and don't have use for.
Forward eva, backwards neva!
One love

Simple Ways to Enhance Your Garage Door’s Curb Appeal
Introduction:
Your garage door is one of the first things people notice about your home. If you think your garage door looks a bit drab or it's just blending into the background, there are several simple and inexpensive ways to give it a facelift. Here’s how you can enhance your garage door’s curb appeal and make your home stand out in the neighborhood.
1. Give It a Fresh Coat of Paint:
Sometimes, all a garage door needs is a new coat of paint to bring it back to life. Choose a color that complements your home’s exterior but don’t be afraid to opt for something bold or slightly different to make the door pop. For a cohesive look, consider painting your front door the same color.
2. Add Hardware for a Touch of Elegance:
Decorative hardware can transform a plain garage door into something special. Adding faux hinges and handles can give an ordinary garage door the look of a stylish carriage door without the need for a replacement.
3. Install Stylish Lighting:
Good lighting can enhance the look of your garage door and also improve security. Install sconces or overhead lighting fixtures on either side of your garage door to highlight its features at night and add a welcoming glow.
4. Consider Adding Windows:
If your garage door doesn’t have windows, consider getting a new panel with decorative windows. Not only do they add aesthetic appeal, but they also let natural light into your garage, making it feel less like a closed-off space.

5. Keep It Clean and Well-Maintained:
Sometimes, all your garage door needs to look better is a good cleaning. Regularly wash the door to remove dirt and grime. Also, ensure the tracks are clean and the door is well-lubricated to operate smoothly and quietly.
6. Plant Some Greenery:
Adding some plant life around your garage can make a big difference. Consider planting flowers or shrubs along the driveway or placing potted plants near the garage door. This bit of greenery can make your home feel more inviting and vibrant.
7. Update with Modern Technology:
Modernize your garage door with smart technology features like remote access, security cameras, or motion detectors. These features not only boost curb appeal by showing that your home is modern and well-equipped but also offer convenience and security.
Conclusion:
Enhancing the curb appeal of your garage door doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a few simple updates like a fresh coat of paint, new lighting, or even some decorative hardware, you can make a significant impact. Take a weekend to spruce up your garage door and watch how it transforms the overall appearance of your home. Not only will you love the new look, but if you ever decide to sell, these small changes could make a big difference.
