The apartment is dark, the light from the city coming in through his windows providing just enough light for Wade to see by. He really should be sleeping, too, but he’s ignoring his own exhaustion in favor of trying to commit this moment to memory. Women blow in and out of his life. Good things never last. He wants to save this memory of her. To have something soft to think of when she finally moves on.

Her face is in shadow, turned away from the light and pressed against his side. A soft stroke of the fingers of the arm she doesn’t have pinned brushes her dark hair back behind her ear to give the city lights a chance at illuminating more of her face. He traces his fingers down from her hair to her jaw, admiring the half of her face he can see from this angle. The soft pout of her lips. Sleep smooths away those sharp edges of her. That fire and fight that he so loves becomes peaceful in a way that he’s not sure many other people have been allowed to see. That it’s something he gets is a wonder that he’s not entirely sure how he managed to earn.

He doesn’t get to admire her face long before she’s shifting. For a moment, he fears he might have woken her, but no. She nuzzles against him and makes one of those quiet, sleepy noises that make his heart flutter. Her hand moves up his chest as she settles herself even closer. His attention turns to that instead. Long fingers and painted nails. They’ve got a grip that can drive a man to his knees - in more ways than one - but they’re relaxed now. Slack against his chest. 

His hand moves away from her head to join her hand on his chest. To stroke fingertips over the back of her hand and then carefully lift that hand off his chest, up to his lips. Light kisses across her knuckles, turning her hand over to kiss her palm, and then lowering her hand once again to settle it over his heart.

!! MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH || Warning for cancer !!

Nothing much is different for the majority of Wade’s life. He’s a happy dude with some violent tendencies and a lot of blood on his hands. He has a job that pays well, that he can do as he sees fit. He meets a girl he loves and wants to spend the rest of his life with, so he proposes. And then the unthinkable happens. Where this AU differs from the canon is that, instead of slipping away in the middle of the night when he hits fuck it, he stays with Vanessa. He doesn’t have that much time left, and he doesn’t want to drag her down with him, but she’s strong and insisting they can do something.

They’ve tried everything his doctor can offer, everything any second, third, or fourth opinion can offer. He has plenty of money saved up from all the jobs he does, so he lets Vanessa take him around the world to all those places she was giving him information for in the movie. They end up in Guadalajara, their last stop in their desperation world tour. The doctor is nothing more than a con man, another phony doctor in a line of phony doctors, and “once you see enough desperate people ripped off, you start to feel the itch.” In a burst of anger, Wade kills the doctor with his own scalpel, then realizing Vanessa has now seen that side of him, he flees. Vanessa runs after him and manages to catch him, and they leave the country together.

They return home. Wade wanted to spend the rest of his life with Vanessa, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. It’s not like he has that much time left. He proposed to Vanessa before he got sick, though, and even though he’s told her that she deserves better than him, she still wants to get married. Even if she doesn’t have that much time left with him, she wants to be his wife. They go to Vegas and get married, and stay in the “Honeymoon Suite” of some shitty motel, but they are happy. There are many pictures taken, and even though it’s clear how sick Wade is at this point, there isn’t a single one where he isn’t smiling.

He doesn’t have long. Only a few months now. They’re back living in Wade’s tiny apartment, and Vanessa has just found out she’s pregnant. Despite how awful he feels most days, Wade is pushing himself. He’s taking jobs again. The kind where he can just shoot someone and be done with it. He’s not going to live to see the birth of his kid, he knows, but at least he can leave Vanessa plenty of money to take care of herself and their child.

He’s in the hospital in the end. Wade had originally been planning to go out on his own terms, but then Vanessa got pregnant and he needed to stick around just as long as he possibly could. He’s been able to hear his daughter’s heartbeat. Been able to see her on scans. Even been able to feel her kick a couple times. He’s held on longer than he was expected too, but the end comes to everyone. Wade dies in his hospital bed with Vanessa in the chair beside him, holding her hand.
