okay it's been literal ages since i've watched this since it released i think in 2016 and i watched it maybe around 2017-2018 BUT oh my god i remembering loving it so much, kim bok-joo is so cute, her actor is actually insanely beautiful with long hair, the love interest/male actor IS SO HOTT i remember searching up if he was in other k-drama's. but yeah weightlifting fairy is literally so good, it's so funny, a lil sad sometimes, but overall so so good

So this post is completely unnecessary but imma make it anyway. So if you’ve watched any kdramas from the last like 3 years, you probably know about the “and they were childhood friends!” trope and if you don’t its the cliche of revealing, at some point in the series, that the male and female lead met at some point while they were kids.

That being said, I suddenly had the idea of making a list of kdramas in which the use of that trope is justified by the plot/themes of the drama and a list of dramas that just threw it in there.(also this list only includes dramas I’ve watched so if i leave out a lot I’m sorry) Also, this list may include spoilers.

Kdramas where it makes sense for the leads to have been childhood friends(and why it makes sense):

- Angel’s Last Mission: Love so I saw a couple people complaining about this in regards to this show because so many dramas recently have been doing the childhood friends thing. However for this drama it works. It’s there to show the audience another reason why Kim Dan believes he and Yeon Soo were brought together on purpose. I mean if you really look at it, the reveal that they knew each other comes in the part of the show where Dan is the most unsure of his feelings. It serves to further confuse the audience about how their relationship, or the consequences of their relationship, will turn out.

- She Was Pretty This one is obvious. It’s literally the central conflict in the show.

- Come and Hug Me Also the central conflict for this show lol(although its the conflict for a very different reason here)

- Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo Honestly I almost put this on the second list because it doesn’t have much to do with the overall plot. That being said, I like the way it’s handled in this show. Unlike other dramas where being childhood friends doesn’t effect the plot, the fact that they were childhood friends is revealed in the first episode. It’s not there to make the couple feel like they’re destined nor is it there to provide an emotional conflict near the end of the drama like in Her Private Life. The only reason it’s there is to have a reason for Joon Hyung to keep talking to Bok Joo even after she returns his handkerchief. It’s mentioned a few times later in the show in addition to being referenced every time he calls her chubs. Weightlifting Fairy is also on this list due to my personal bias lol, every time I watch the end of the first episode I always think its really adorable.

- Romance is a Bonus Book Although the conflict is more that they’ve been friends for so long that she only sees him platonically, it’s still (again) part of the central conflict.

- The Smile Has Left Your Eyes This show is a remake of the Japanese drama A Hundred Million Stars From The Sky, in which the main couple are revealed to be SIBLINGS at the end, so I’m grateful that they changed it to childhood friends for the remake. Also it explains what happened to both of the leads parents so it has plot relevancy as well.

- Something in the Rain Part of the central conflict because he’s her best friend’s younger brother.

- My First First Love Central. Conflict. Again.

-  The Reply Series, I have only watched Reply 1997 and part of the first episode of Reply 1988 but I’m assuming the main friend group is similar for all three. They all grow up in the same neighborhood, including the lead couple so its the part of the plot.

Kdramas where it’s not necessary for the leads to be childhood friends:

- Her Private Life The only reason they use the trope in this show is to provide an emotional conflict towards the end and keep it interesting as the drama ties up it’s other plot lines.

- What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? I might get some complaints for this, but the only reason it’s here in this drama is so the writers can basically say “See?He’s the guy she’s been looking for! They’re meant for each other!”. But here’s my problem with that, the conflict in this drama isn’t about her looking for her childhood savior. That’s more of a side plot. The main conflict is that Park Seo Joon’s character has yet to realize his feelings, until Secretary Kim quits, and he doesn’t know what to do. The main plot and themes are about him humbling himself in order to keep the things in his life that are important to him.

- While You Were Sleeping Now this one was kind of hard to decide on, because it does have some to do with the plot, like how the prophetic dreams work(i.e. get transferred between people). It also has to do with the relationship between our main guy and the detective. Having said that, the way the dreams work doesn’t make sense anyway. They theorize that the dreams are caused by being saved from almost dying, and then you dream about the person who saved you. But if that’s the case, why doesn’t the girl Suzy’s character saves from fire start dreaming about her? Why do Lee Jong Suk’s dreams start years after being rescued, but Jung Hae In’s dreams seem to begin only a few days after being saved? Honestly I would’ve rather had that rule not be explained then the show provide an explanation that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Now in reference to Jong Suk’s character and the detective’s relationship, I think they could’ve had it that they met when the main guy was young, just like how it is in the show, but left out the main girl’s involvement with that.
