Alibaug Property Rates in 2024: An In-Depth Overview of the Coastal Real Estate Market
Alibaug, a coastal town located about 96 kilometers from Mumbai, has long been a favorite getaway for tourists seeking sun, sand, and a peaceful retreat from the bustling metropolis. In recent years, however, it has also become a prominent location for real estate investment. Property rates in Alibaug have seen significant fluctuations over the last decade, spurred by infrastructure developments, growing demand for holiday homes, and the appeal of its serene environment. As we delve into 2024, the real estate market in Alibaug remains dynamic, with prices reflecting the town's unique charm and its proximity to Mumbai.
Factors Influencing Property Rates in Alibaug
Proximity to Mumbai and Upcoming Infrastructure: One of the most significant factors driving property rates in Alibaug is its accessibility from Mumbai. Alibaug Property Rates has always attracted buyers who want a weekend home near the city, but the completion of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) in 2024 is expected to further boost demand. This sea bridge will reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Alibaug to just over an hour, making it more feasible for daily commuters as well as weekend travelers.
Demand for Second Homes: Alibaug has long been known as a preferred destination for affluent buyers looking for second homes or holiday properties. The pandemic significantly shifted people's preferences, leading many to invest in homes in quieter, more spacious areas away from congested cities. This trend has pushed property prices higher, particularly for premium locations like Nagaon, Kihim, and Varsoli, which are known for their pristine beaches and tranquil surroundings.
Tourism Growth: The town’s growing tourism industry has a direct impact on property rates. With its appeal as a beach town, a growing number of resorts, homestays, and luxury villas are coming up, catering to both domestic and international tourists. Investors looking to tap into the holiday rental market are driving demand for properties that can be converted into vacation homes. This has particularly pushed up the prices in areas near the beach or with scenic views of the Arabian Sea.
Limited Land Availability: Despite the growth in real estate development, land availability in prime locations of Alibaug is limited. The town’s natural landscape, featuring beaches and forests, constrains the amount of land that can be developed, keeping demand high and ensuring that prices continue to rise.
Current Property Rates in 2024
As of mid-2024, property prices in Alibaug vary depending on the location, type of property, and proximity to the beach or key infrastructure. Here’s a snapshot of the prevailing rates:
Plots: Open land in Alibaug for residential development is priced anywhere between ₹2,000 and ₹5,000 per square foot. Plots closer to the beach or with sea views can command prices as high as ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 per square foot.
Villas: Luxurious villas with modern amenities and proximity to the beach range from ₹1.5 crore to ₹10 crore or more, depending on the size and location. The most exclusive properties in areas like Kihim and Awas tend to be on the higher end of the price spectrum.
Apartments: While Alibaug has fewer high-rise buildings compared to cities, apartments in the region are becoming more popular, particularly in gated communities. Prices for a 2BHK apartment can range from ₹50 lakh to ₹1.5 crore, depending on the developer and amenities offered.
Future Outlook
Alibaug's real estate market is expected to continue growing in the coming years, especially with infrastructural upgrades that make it more accessible from Mumbai. With more people working remotely and seeking homes away from urban chaos, demand for second homes in Alibaug Property is unlikely to wane anytime soon. The introduction of better road connectivity, luxury resorts, and premium residential projects will likely maintain upward pressure on prices.
Moreover, as Mumbai continues to experience high property prices, more buyers will look towards Alibaug as an affordable alternative for larger homes and land parcels. It is predicted that the property rates in Alibaug will see a steady rise over the next five years, making it an attractive location for both end-users and investors.
In 2024, Alibaug remains a hotspot for real estate investment, fueled by its scenic beauty, proximity to Mumbai, and growing tourism industry. While prices have risen substantially in recent years, there is still room for growth as infrastructure improvements make the town more accessible. For those looking to invest in coastal properties, Alibaug offers a unique mix of lifestyle benefits and long-term value, with property rates poised to appreciate further.

Dahiwadi – A way of life Its 5 am (early morning for most of us) and the alarm bell rings ….. Dare I press the snooze button and am sure to miss on what fun lies ahead of us Hastily we all get up and after packing our backsacks and our meager daily essentials , we head off to exciting extended weekend After managing to hop on our old time friends to tag along , we, a group of ten ( 6 adults , “Abhijeet , Pratima , Trupti , Vikrant, Hubby and Self “ and 4 notorious pranksters “ Om, Shaurya , Vrushank and my little Munchkin , Vivs” squeezed into the car to start the 300km drive from Mumbai to Dahiwadi via Satara On the way , , we started munching right on the word Go Healthy breakfast of Home made finger licking Idlis , Yummy Aloo Sandwiches and methi Theplas .. Not to mention the sinful Chips and farsan . Took a halt at the famous Food Court to do our morning ablutions . It was drizzling and the weather was pleasing enough to keep our mood upbeat . As we reached Satara during our lunch time , we had a sumptuous meal of Jwari Bhakri , Gavran Chicken , Mutton ( A total feast for Non Veggies ) and Akkhi Masoor Dal and the staple Bharlela Vanga ( Treat for Veggies as well ) Then before moving ahead to Sajjangad , we ladies headed to a small clothing outlet which was bang opposite our Manas Restaurant . The window shopping looked good and we actually managed to get some nice day to day outfits. Looking at our happy faces , our respective spouses wondered whther it was d meal or the shopping that’s adding the glow … Well we ladies know it better …. Right !!! Within half an hour we reached Sajjangad ,, Literally means the Fort of Good people … we were kind of misfits … on this soil … Lol .. This is a popular scenic spot located about 20 kilometers from Satara city. You will find here a series of waterfalls, one of which is 500 meters in height. Most tourists come here during the rainy season when the waterfalls become thunderous.. Sajjangad in the district of Satara not only occupies a place of historical importance but tops the list when it comes to the devotees of Samarth Ramdas Swami, one of the most prominent spiritual mentors in this part of India. It was here that he stayed for a long time as also breathed his last. We walked up the 100 steps with heavy breaths … ( Cons of the mundane urban life ) but enjoyed the climb since it was coupled with Poses and selfies . On our downhill march , we also noticed the beautiful rain bow since it was drizzling in the sunshine . We all were happy as kids to spot this magical moment since its difficult to spot such sights sitting in the closed city office walls Further, we decided to move to Chowpatty … Well halt … The name is not a misnomer .. Its just like our very own Chowpatty with food stalls minus the beach ( J ). We with mutual consensus decided to give a miss to the Kaas Plateau is about 22 kilometers from Satara city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it comes alive with a wide variety of flowers - more than 850 different species - during the months of August and September. Since we were in June and visiting a plateau without flowers would not have been a great sight . ( We shall visit again only for Kaas Pathar in Sept …. Keeping Our fingers crossed )After gorging on the junk food like Pav bhaji , Bhel Puri ,Ice cream and giving out burps of happiness, we laid our hands on the famous Mango barfi, Kandhi Pedhe , Jambul and Ground nuts . Tired as we jumped into the car to head to Dahi -wadi , to our friend’s maternal abode . Pratima’s Parents and her younger sister , Chakuli and friend Sneha were eagerly awaiting to greet us all with open arms After a quick dinner ( since our tummies were already full ..) we snuggled in the bedsheets to peaceful sleep . Next day after a good night sleep , we all headed to Shikhar Shingnapur . The Shambhu mahadev mandir in shingnapurits an old temple devoted to lord shiva. when I heard about shikhar shingnapur for first time then i thought its related with another famous temple of maharashtra that is shani shingnapur, which is devoted to lord Shani dev since this temple is located at top (shikhar) of shingnapur hills, thats why it must be called shikhar shingnapur. two more shiva temples which should be visited by lord shiva devotees and are very near to this temple are amruteshwar temple and guptlinga temple (about 3 km away). the temple is connected with great king shiva ji maharaj family. shiva ji maharaj used to visit this temple often. There are many shivlingas (around 8) in the temple. thats why this temple is also known as dakshin kailash. Also in the inner sanctum, we saw two shivling. in this temple and 5 nandi . During mahashivratri festival many devotees visit this temple. And as per legend, lord shiva and parvati ma got married here. After a delicious homemade meal served at Khanaval ( interesting news being this place holds the wedding ground of our very Own Abhi and Pratima ) we ventured to Guptlinga mahadev temple – this secluded shiva temple is situated about 3 km from shikhar shingnapur shiva temple. both these temples are connected with chhatrapati shivaji maharaj family. another important shiva temple situated nearby is amruteshwar temple. maha dwar of shree shetra guptlinga mahadev mandir. like shikhar shignapur, this temple is also connected with great king Shivani maharaja family. Udayanraje Bhosale is the 13th descendant of the Maratha king chhatrapati Shivani maharaja. view from the main gate of the temple premises. at the entrance few ladies were selling pooja material. we were greeted by few monkeys at this point you have to climb down around 100-200 steps to reach the mahadev temple. there are few shiva and parvati ma statues placed on the way.. guptlinga mahadev temple. it’s a small temple known for its gupt shivling.. Inside the sanctum can see one marble tile is removed in this above photo. the tile is removed to feel the gupt shivling which is placed right below this shivling. that’s why it is called as guptlinga mahadev temple. There is water below this shivling. you have to put your stretched arm totally inside this cavity made by displacing the tile. at a distance of 2 to 2.5 feet, the shivling is felt in inverted shape. it is said that only fortunate people can touch it. i saw few people were scared to put their hands inside the cavity. so take the mahadev name and try your luck. After this was the highlight of the trip , wherein we all moved to fields … Shetat…. Alongwith Bhau ( Pratima’s father ).. Well in the locals , Our parents are not termed as Baba, Daddy , Pappa , But by the name which the entire houselhold calls them as .. hence our favourite Bhau took us to the trip down the memory lane … We all had the famous bullock cart ride . A bullock cart or ox cart is a two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicle pulled by oxen (draught cattle). It is a means of transportation used since ancient times in many parts of the world. They are still used today where modern vehicles are too expensive or the infrastructure does not favor them. Used especially for carrying goods, the bullock cart is pulled by one or several oxen (bullocks). The cart (also known as a jinker) is attached to a bullock team by a special chain attached to yokes, but a rope may also be used for one or two animals. The driver and any other passengers sit on the front of the cart, while load is placed in the back. Traditionally the cargo was usually agrarian goods and lumber. The kids had a blast on this humpty dumpty ride while the adults were somehow holding their spines upright . . Then we plucked brinjals , Ground nuts , Drumsticks , Methi, , Bottle Gourd ,and managed to get enough for a three days The wind was blasting and the atmosphere was pleasant but a bit dry .The sugarcane fields were sashaying as per the wind directions and the atmosphere was magical . With a heavy heart we bid adieu to the fields , On the way sighted the national bird taking his ritual walk . Walking August , this pristine beauty with all the colours embedded into one, was like a lottery . We cherished every moment of this serene walk .After this we visited the famous Gondavale which is a samadhi place of Shri Brahma Chaitanya Gondavalekar Maharaj. Gondavale is a very famous pilgrimage place. It gets crowd on every pournima and at the time of Shri Raamnavmi, Gurupournima, Gokulashtami, Daasnavmi.. Gondavalekar Maharaj was devotee of the god Rama. He spent a lifetime teaching the importance of peace. He showed path of devotion of god Rama to thousands of devotees. He taught a Mantara to people “Shri Ram Jay Ram Jay Jay Ram Samadhi Mandir : is the place where Shree Maharaj rests after he discarded the human body. The day begins early at the mandir at 3 am. It is best to attend the Kakad aarti which starts at 4.45 am which is followed by phugadi, bhajan etc. The Samadhi is a simple stone structure atop which are the paduka. On the level above that is the Gopal Krishna idol. It represents that this location was a cowshed. Shree Maharaj loved cows and he had wished that he be put to rest among the cow After an eventful day we headed back to “ Pratima “The bungalow Name of Pratima’s Maternal abode completely satiated . We had great dinner served by Pratima’s Aai . Then despite a tiring entire day schedule we ladies had the energy to spare to our small talks on Life and life beyond work . Independent Reviews:-
Bristol Ferry Boats - A great way to tour the historic harbour. Friendly staff, great value.
Having had a less than successful trip to We the Curious, we saw the yellow boat arrive and jumped on board. The full tour takes you from the City Centre to Hotwells and back, and then goes off in the other direction to Temple Meads and back. You can choose the full 80 minute tour, a 40 minute (half tour) or simply use the craft as a taxi or bus in the harbour area. We chose the 40 minute trip to Hotwells and back and saw Bristol from a viewpoint I had never experienced before. You travel past The Matthew and The Great Britain, have a good view of the cathedral, the harbour-side industries and the old pubs, with a great view of the multi-coloured buildings of Hotwells. A very friendly crewman was there to help people on and off and call out the stops and sell the tickets. We will definitely go back and do the full tour (ticket lasts a day and lets you hop on and off) when the weather is a bit warmer. Great fun and great value.
Beese's Riverside Bar and Tea Rooms
This is a great little quirky place next to the river. If you are used to eating in chain establishments it may not be for you as it is quite 'characterful'. We only had a cream tea but the Sunday lunches that people were tucking in to looked good too. The walk along the river and ferry across added to the charm.

Alibaug Property Rates: An In-Depth Analysis
Alibaug, a coastal town located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, has long been a favored weekend getaway for Mumbai residents. Known for its pristine beaches, historical forts, and lush greenery, Alibaug's real estate market has seen significant fluctuations in recent years. This article delves into the current property rates in Alibaug, the factors influencing these prices, and what potential buyers can expect in the near future.
Current Property Rates in Alibaug
As of mid-2024, property rates in Alibaug Property Rates vary widely depending on the location, type of property, and proximity to the beach. On average, residential plots can range from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per square foot. Villas and luxury homes, especially those near popular beaches like Alibaug Beach, Nagaon Beach, and Varsoli Beach, can command prices between ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per square foot.
For those looking at more budget-friendly options, properties located slightly inland or in less developed areas can be found at rates starting from ₹1,500 per square foot. These prices reflect a broad spectrum influenced by factors such as infrastructure development, accessibility, and demand from both local and outstation buyers.
Factors Influencing Property Rates
Several key factors influence property rates in Alibaug:
Proximity to Mumbai: One of the primary drivers of Alibaug's real estate market is its proximity to Mumbai. With improved connectivity through ferries, speedboats, and a proposed trans-harbor link, Alibaug is becoming an attractive destination for second homes and investment properties for Mumbai's affluent class.
Tourism and Lifestyle: Alibaug's appeal as a tourist destination significantly impacts property prices. The town offers a tranquil lifestyle with beautiful beaches, water sports, and historical sites, making it a popular choice for vacation homes and resorts.
Infrastructure Development: The ongoing and planned infrastructure projects, including better road connectivity and proposed airport projects, are expected to boost property values further. The planned Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is particularly anticipated to enhance accessibility, driving up real estate demand.
Economic Factors: Like any real estate market, broader economic factors play a role. The post-pandemic recovery, interest rates, and overall economic health influence buyer confidence and purchasing power.
Trends and Future Outlook
The real estate market in Alibaug has shown resilience, with a steady demand for luxury villas and second homes. The trend of remote working, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has also spurred interest in properties that offer a peaceful environment away from city congestion.
Looking ahead, several trends are likely to shape Alibaug's property market:
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Developments: With increasing environmental awareness, there is a growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly housing. Developers are responding by incorporating green building practices, which may attract a niche but affluent segment of buyers.
Increase in Gated Communities: Safety and community living are becoming priorities for many buyers. As a result, gated communities with modern amenities are gaining popularity, which could lead to higher property prices within these complexes.
Commercial Real Estate Growth: As tourism and local businesses grow, there is a parallel increase in demand for commercial properties. Hotels, resorts, and retail spaces are expected to see significant growth, contributing to overall real estate market development.
Sasawane Village market presents a mix of opportunities and challenges. While prices are on the higher side, especially for premium properties, the potential for appreciation driven by infrastructural developments and lifestyle preferences remains strong. Prospective buyers should consider their investment horizon, purpose, and the specific location's future growth potential when making a decision. With its serene environment and strategic location, Alibaug continues to be an attractive destination for both real estate investment and personal retreats.

Link
Mumbai is known for its vivid timeless efforts that keep the city awake 24 hours. When a city is awake for 24 hours, it is bound to function. The functioning occurs throughout the day and even at night. Well, no one has the time or energy to live out loud during the day, call it exhaustion due to the humid weather or people’s judgments, however, there is ample of time during the night. As such, there is no defined time for the night in Mumbai, the sun sets, it gets dark, yet, all the Mumbaikars keep on functioning tirelessly.
It becomes a necessity for the citizens of this gigantic city to ease off and blow the steam occasionally to increase productivity. Everyone has a different method of releasing the stress and this combination of various activities is what makes Mumbai’s nightlife peculiar and happening.
Night Clubs
Night Clubs are the most popular form of stress relief as everything is found under one roof, like food, music, dance floor, drinks and a place to socialize.
There are an ample number of night clubs in Mumbai that open at 7 in the evening and close at 1:30 past midnight. With a number of clubs located around the city, even in the suburbs, the night time doesn’t seem upset on the weekdays as well. The schedule on weekdays seem pretty tight, yet, even the slightest chance to have a drink isn’t missed by anyone.
Night clubs are popularly located in the most happening part of the city or around corporate premises. There are a few located in Bandra, Lower Parel, Andheri, Bandra Kurla Complex etc. These are primary locations for going dancing and clubbing. These clubs are completely occupied on the weekends, however, on the weekdays, they may seem quite flattering.
Long Drives
For some driving is an exercise, yet, for others it’s like meditation, peaceful and sound, making us realize the worth of each passing minute and meter.
Long drives are a very important part of Mumbai’s nightlife. People put on their bed suites, sit in the car and just drive into the cool wind along the Arabian Sea on the shores of Nariman Point or Worli Sea face. Yes, it does help in easing the stress and giving complete solitude to the mind; quintessentially required for thinking.
Couching at Sea Face
You must have heard people say, “Mumbai is just a name, but Bombay is a feeling!” Well, at some point in time it is true, nonetheless, the phrase is still true every day.
The source of these feelings are the waves that hit the shores of Mumbai. The waves carry love, warmth, and care for us and take away all the stress, depression and tension from our life. Many Mumbaikars, claim that sitting on the shore of Mumbai at Nariman Point, Marine Drive or Worli Sea face brings them peace of mind and peace with themselves. It sounds unrealistic, but it is Mumbai, where dreams become reality and air-dust turns into matter.
Malabar Hills
This one kind of seems unusual and out-of-place. Malabar Hills is an upscale residential area in South Mumbai. The locality is located on top of the hill on the coast of the Arabian Sea. The nightlife is not happening, on the contrary, it is quite peaceful. If you want to be all by yourself and cherish every moment, then drive to Malabar Hill and relax with a puff of cigarette while Buddha and Hulk are quarreling amongst themselves.
Haji Ali
Haji Ali is a dargah located on an islet off Worli sea face in South Mumbai. At night the gates are shut, however, the serene where green lights (Green being the color of Prophet) spark-up the holy place is a tranquil too difficult to stay from. Haji Ali creates a very beautiful eye-catching sight and gives peace to the soul when the days are bad, and the nights are worse.
Pure devotions and the hymn of the chants always linger in the air near Haji, Ali making one feel all the positiveness and good vibes Mumbai has to offer, even in the night.
A Mumbaikar once said, “Mumbai is not a place where the guides and monuments mesmerize you, it’s a place where the city is mesmerized by you.” Haji Ali is the place that can mesmerize you, and in turn, you shall mesmerize the city.
Food
Who doesn’t have late night cravings? It is one of the most common symptoms found in the millennials today.
When it comes to food, Mumbai has everything locked under its belt. Those authentic spices which make Indian cuisine stand out in the world. Those flavors exploding in the mouth when a bite, full of haldi, laal mirch, and garam masala touches the tip of your tongue, it is not just food, that is God telling us, there is no such thing as heaven, live your life to the fullest on earth itself.
Sounds high, well, that is what food in Mumbai is all about. Not just to fill the hunger, but actually, suffice the craving and ask for more. Some of the best late-night places to eat in Mumbai are situated majorly in South Mumbai. Ayub’s, Bademiya, Sukh Sagar are to name a few. These places are open till late night and sometimes, even early morning.
Night light in Mumbai seems quite different than others, right? Perhaps, it’s strange just in this blog. The reason is that being a Mumbaikar is not always about partying at night and going for long drives. Mumbai is a city that never sleeps, it moves fast and keeps on accelerating every day. So, it is good for people to slow down once a while, take a moment by themselves in this giant place and find solace with inner-self and God.
“Work is a never-ending duty. Stress is everlasting. But what makes a life are the special moments which actually makes us happy and we never forget them!” – Code of Mumbaikars.

19 FOR ‘19: TOP SPORTS Business PROJECTIONS FOR 2019
19 FOR ‘19: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BUSINESS/
TECHNOLOGY/PHILANTHROPY PROJECTIONS FOR 2019 with Jacob Aere and Tanner Simkins
The coming year in sports will include mega global events, major facilities openings, and leaps forward in technology and innovation. Here are the top stories we’re keeping an eye on in 2019.
Esports have garnered sponsorships with major companies and continue their global growth. In a year capped by sponsorships between Nike and Jian, and “Uzi,” Zi-Hao, and Tyler “Ninja” Blevins’ unprecedented Fortnite success, esports are headed on a near vertical market trend. By year end, the industry will have grossed $900 million and by 2020 the industry’s revenue could reach $2.4 billion. According to CNBC, even Wall Street behemoth Goldman Sachs has taken note of the blossoming industry and has predicted that the audience for esports will reach 276 million people by 2022. To date, some of the biggest names investing in esports include Mark Cuban, Shaquille O’Neal, Alex Rodriguez, Jerry Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Jordan, Drake, Stephen Curry, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. Expect more companies to advertise with and sponsor esports teams and leagues while also preparing for more tightly contested battles for media rights to stream esports action.
With a signature 2018 win under his belt, Tiger Woods renews optimism that he can break Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 Major victories. Woods’ 2018 season-ending Tour Championship victory at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta was his first victory at a pro golf tournament in more than five years and his 80th career PGA win — two short of the career record held by Sam Snead. Vegas odds makers currently have Woods at 25-1 to beat Nicklaus’ record. More to the point, while Woods is passing on this week’s Tournament of Champions in Maui, PGA Tour execs from Torrey Pines in San Diego to Bethpage State Park in New York anticipate having to do what Valspar Championship tournament director Tracy West underwent last March. When West got word that Woods had committed to her tournament, according to Sports Illustrated she implemented the “Tiger Plan,” adding two parking lots, an extra admission gate, and bridges, doubled the press room, hired 20 more off duty cops and more marshalls…and ordered 100 extra port-a potties.
The Los Angeles Chargers and Rams will open a new stadium in L.A. According to ESPN, the Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park will open its doors to the Rams and Chargers for the 2020 season. The stadium and its surrounding areas’ costs are pushing close to $5 billion, all of which will be funded by Rams owner Stan Kroenke. The most recent updates show that the stadium is more than 50% complete and the facility is already slated to host the Super Bowl in 2022, the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2023, and the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2028 Olympics. The new stadium will seat 70,000 and is expandable to 100,000 while there will also be a 6,000-seat performing arts venue, 1.7 million square feet of retail and office space, 300 hotel rooms, 2,500 new residences, and 25 acres of public parks and open space. Bigger than football, the venue is helping to reestablish L.A. as a cultural landmark.
The NBA Golden State Warriors look forward to moving across the Bay to their new state of the art home. The Warriors, marking this season as the team's last at Oracle Arena in Oakland, started construction on their new San Francisco Mission Bay site in January, 2017. The $1 billion self-financed Chase Center is scheduled to be completed in August, 2019, in time for the team's 2019-2020 NBA season tipoff. The 18,000+ facility will also house office and lab space and a public park, and is NHL-ready should that league decide to add yet another team to its Western division.
After a change in North Carolina law, Charlotte gets the NBA All-Star Game. Last May, the NBA announced that Charlotte would host the 2019 All-Star Weekend after the league had taken the 2018 event away from the city because of North Carolina’s so-called “bathroom bill,” which required transgender individuals to use public restrooms that correspond with the sex listed on their birth certificates. The state repealed some portions of that law, and in April NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league would once again consider letting Charlotte host its midseason exhibition. Outside of the big showcase in Charlotte, the NBA announced that the Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings will play in two preseason games in Mumbai in October, marking the first games the NBA has played in India and the first games any North American sports league has held there.
Where will the Oakland Raiders play in 2019? In terms of the 2020 season, the Oakland Raiders are set to play in Las Vegas in a gorgeous $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat domed stadium with natural grass and a see-through roof with a view of the Strip. However, their move to Vegas has been halted as the city of Oakland filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the team and the NFL that could skew the transition process between Oakland and Vegas. Reportedly, a part of the lawsuit could include the Raiders having to leave their team name, colors, and history in Oakland, like the Cleveland Browns did when they moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. While it is far from certain if the Raiders will remain in Oakland during all of the legal troubles, there may be an opportunity to play in the nearby Levi’s Stadium, or even down in San Diego – that recently lost an NFL team – or potentially in Glendale, Arizona where the Cardinals currently play.
The debut of the Alliance of American Football League is right around the corner. After the NFL’s Super Bowl LIII wraps in Atlanta in February, the following week will showcase the first season of the Alliance of American Football League. The league was announced back in March, 2018, and currently has eight teams around the U.S. Select games will be broadcast by CBS Sports and the biggest break for the league was the lifting of federal sports gambling restrictions. According to USA Today, the league will offer a gambling product that allows customers to watch a game on an app while on the same screen allowing betting on anything including touchdowns, tackles, scores, and more. Although its high-tech gambling options and separate season from the NFL offer lots of market promise, the league will have direct competition with the renovated XFL if it survives into 2020.
Seattle’s NHL expansion team comes to fruition. After the NHL’s board of governors unanimously approved the franchise in Seattle, the team is expected to begin playing in the 2021-2022 season. According to The New York Times, the NHL will receive an expansion fee of $650 million, which will be split among every other team except for the recent expansion club Vegas Golden Knights. Seattle’s expansion team will add another city to the Western Conference, which will now balance the 16 clubs of the Eastern Conference. Good for Seattle is an instant rivalry with the Vancouver Canucks, who play just across the northern border. The region is home to corporate giants like Amazon and Microsoft, and outside of the Canucks, the Pacific Northwest is a relatively untapped area for the NHL. With an NHL team coming, an NBA team may also land in the not-too-far future.
If recent history is an indicator, April’s NFL Draft in Nashville will further expand the league’s appointment viewing resume and dominance of a 12-month annual calendar. According to the economic impact report compiled by VisitDallas, the first NFL Draft hosted at an NFL stadium – running April 26-28, 2018 at AT&T Stadium - generated $125.2 million in economic impact for the Dallas region during the three-day event and $74 million in direct spending. This marks a new record for the NFL Draft's economic impact and the first year that the NFL Draft generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host region. The 2019 NFL Draft will take place April 25-27 in Nashville, and given that city’s music industry and creative ties, look for the economic impact to build along with the event’s entertainment value.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar could be the first to have 48 countries competing to become world champions, with a decision likely to be made in 2019 on the size of the competition. FIFA President Gianni Infantino indicated that he hopes to expand the current 32-team format before the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, noting that it is “possible” and “feasible” to do so. Qatar is currently in the process of building eight stadiums to host the World Cup in four years’ time, also needing to construct massive amounts of infrastructure to accommodate the teams and fans. If the World Cup field were expanded to 48 teams, it would significantly increase the already-controversial workload placed on a mostly-immigrant worker population.
This summer, the U.S. Women’s National Team will look to defend their title at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France. The event will be staged in nine host cities across the country before concluding at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon. The USWNT is set to face off against Sweden, Chile, and Thailand in Group F, coming into the tournament as the top-ranked team in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings at the end of 2018; Sweden, ranked No. 9, is the only other Group F member ranked in the top 20 worldwide. The 24-team tournament will kick off on June 7 at the Parc des Princes in Paris when host France takes on South Korea. The USWNT will open play versus Thailand in Reims before playing Chile in Paris and concluding group play against Sweden in Le Havre.
What will happen to the Fox RSNs? The biggest sports media story of 2018 may very well hold the same title in 2019, and that is the fate of Fox’s 22 RSNs after a sale to The Walt Disney Company. Disney picked up the RSNs as part of its $52 billion deal to buy most of 21st Century Fox’ entertainment assets. But in June, the Department of Justice said Disney would have to part with its newly-acquired RSNs in order for the larger deal to get federal regulatory approval. As we head into 2019 and the closing of the Disney-Fox deal, the RSNs could fetch upward of $20 billion. The big question, however, is whether Disney will be able to find one buyer to take all 22 RSNs, or will have it have to sell them off to several bidders, including Sinclair?
2018 saw the publication of influential sports books including Mark Leibovich’s Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times, and 2019 will likewise see groundbreaking sports books published. After years of hard work, our very own Sport Business Handbook: Lessons from 100+ Industry Insiders over 50 Years of the Sports Business will be published on February 26, with national commercial, academic, and consumer distribution. All told, the book comprises 108 of the most prominent figures in sport business history sharing their successes, failures, and experiences in shaping what is now a $1 trillion global industry. Highlighting contributor stories within the Sport Business Handbook will be a focal point, as will conducting a national multi-city Contributor Symposium Tour that will kick off on Thursday, February 28 in Boston with an event jointly hosted by the Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, on the eve of the MIT Sloane Sports Analytics Conference.
The NFL has long been at the forefront of sports analytics and esports trends. For 2019, the league has unwrapped its NFL Big Data Bowl. This inaugural football analytics competition gives college students and professionals the opportunity to utilize historical data sets of the same player tracking data used by teams and suggest innovations about how football is played and coached. Finalists will have the opportunity to present to league and club personnel at the 2019 Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, accessing NFL player tracking data used by teams to analyze league trends and develop on-field strategies. Submissions using NFL-provided data fall under three themes: “Understanding On-Field Speed,” “Proposing a Rule Change” and “Identifying the Best Receiver-Route Combinations.” Eight finalists will earn an all-expenses paid trip to Indy to showcase their work on Wednesday, February 27.
NASCAR continues to shift gears. Turnover at NASCAR during 2018 will be felt both in the boardroom and on the track in 2019 and beyond. Jim France replaced his nephew, Brian France, as NASCAR Chair and CEO in August after Brian was arrested for DUI. Jim and niece Lesa France Kennedy, head of racetrack division ISC, are now quietly restructuring the sport, with a stunning $1.9 billion bid by NASCAR to acquire ISC in November. Meanwhile, after winning the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship last year, the closing of Furniture Row Racing midway through 2018 shocked many in motor sports and has given added urgency to NASCAR’s efforts to help teams overhaul faulty financial models. The sanctioning body is also exploring a multi-tiered sponsorship system, getting away from a single sponsor like Monster Energy that still has one year remaining on its title sponsor contract, estimated at $20 million annually.
This past year was a landmark one for MLS and Liga MX, as the two dominant North American soccer leagues announced a long-term partnership. The New Year will be the first full calendar year in which the partnership will be flushed out, including the second Campeones Cup, a matchup between the champions of each league. The partnership is expected to grow annually in the buildup to the 2026 World Cup, hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Speculation remains that the potential legacy of the United Bid could be the unification of MLS and Liga MX. “We have been discussing with Liga MX additional ways we can collaborate on and off the field, and we are excited about the future opportunities that exist between our two leagues,” said Liga MX President Enrique Bonilla.
UEFA and FIFA introduced the Nations League in 2018 and another major continental or intercontinental tournament is expected to be revealed in 2019. FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s $25 billion plan would totally revamp the global soccer landscape; the Club World Cup would be expanded to 24 teams and a new national-team competition, similar to the Nations League with promotion and relegation but played across multiple continents, would highlight the changes. The proposal was met with a great deal of pushback upon introduction in 2018 — this coming year will be a landmark one if Infantino gets his way. FIFA member nations are preparing to discuss the potential tournaments in the spring when they gather in Kigali, Rwanda, for the FIFA Council meeting.
David Beckham finally unveiled his MLS team toward the end of 2018, with the club now set to come to life in the New Year. Club International de Fútbol Miami, to be known as Inter Miami, has much to do before it begins play in 2020. In a letter penned to its supporters upon the official unveiling of the team’s name, the club wrote: “Above all, it marks another step we have taken on the journey to realizing this dream, together. A journey on which we’ve come a long way. A journey which has only just begun.” In 2019, Beckham and his ownership group will have to finalize a stadium site and construction plans — the biggest obstacle that remains in the way.
Affecting sports movies like 2018’s “Creed II” and “Uncle Drew,” global subscription OTT revenues, at $46 billion in 2018, will overtake box office revenues in 2019, which will come in at just under $40 billion. According to Ampere Analysis, the primary driver of the trend is theatrical slowdown in North America and Western Europe, while SVoD continues to grow in all regions. In the U.S., subscription OTT revenues surpassed theatrical revenues in 2017. The U.K. expected to follow suit by the end of 2018, and China in 2019. Also in OTT production: LeBron James’ and actor Octavia Spencer’s limited series about hair care entrepreneur Madame C.J. Walker, “America’s first Black self-made female millionaire,” reportedly due out in 2019.
