Ever had three white sharks simultaneously "materialize" below you, circle, then vanish again as though they had never been there? Talk about a humbling experience! And talk about an animal truly in its element. How long did it take you to really see each one as they appeared? I have never had a greater appreciation for their counter shading and ability to appear and disappear like ghosts than when I was hovering in the open, deep, blue waters of the Pacific. Adding to the mystique is that they don't really seem to swim so much as glide like apparitions ...simply coming and going without perceptible tail motion or effort. Slow motion sharks! Yay! There's so much to appreciate about the shark in these slo-mo sequences shot by @danabbottsharks while on location for the film 'Monsters' in Aliwal Shoal. 1. The lines and evident musculature of the oceanic black tip 2. Sunlight playing on the skin 3. Apex predators kindly choosing not to bite me even as I sit in their path 4. If SHARKS were a REAL problem I would never take my dog out on the ocean with me on a paddle board. Disregard for my safety is one thing, but serving him up as a potential snack is not something I'm capable of. The truth is that a shark encounter is the least danger we encounter every single day, even the days we go in the ocean. This is complete speculation, but it is fun to notice possible personality traits in these sharks. For example, it seems to me that I see Zapata leave his mouth agape as he passes by the the bait more often than any other white shark I've seen in Guadalupe. They all do it at some point or other, but when Zapata does it I imagine him playing like, "I don't care that I missed the bait, I wasn't really trying...see, I was just swimming by with my mouth open." I've also seen him more than any other individual shark over the years in Guadalupe so that also adds to my tendency to analyze his behavior. So, anyone else wanna weigh in on this @sharkdivingxperts, @greatwhiteadventure , @andy_dellios @joeromeiro333 ?? None of the famous "players", such as Emma or Tarantino showed up while I was tiger shark diving in the Bahamas, which allowed me to see the gradual progression of "comfort levels" displayed by new tiger sharks that were unfamiliar with us. At first, even though they were the biggest of the shark species there, they stayed the furthest away, barely within eyesight. After seemingly assessing the situation some of them ventured further in while others continued to stay away. In this moment one makes a pass through the divers and allows itself to be touched gently on the face. I'm not going to say the shark did or didn't like it, but it certainly didn't seem like an adverse reaction. Although tiger sharks are often categorized as some of the most aggressive sharks, those who dive with them would argue against that. It almost seems like they are torn between both a shy and inquisitive nature. THREE SPECIES of shark appear in this clip. Can you name them all? My favorite part has to be everyone on the boat laughing and celebrating that a shark lunged at my face, ha ha. You are guilty Walter and Raven! :). If you look again, the shark didn't "lunge at my face", actually, it went for a piece of bait which aligned it with my path, then it turned away without doing me any harm. Here's the dialogue: "I can see the beautiful dorsal fins of the oceanic black tips we just went diving with. I can feel them bumping my legs below me, they're surrounding me, going around me. At any time obviously, these sharks, as apex predators, could take me out...effortlessly. Why aren't they? Well, these are the questions you have to ask to begin rethinking the shark, to think about their role on this planet. It has nothing to do with us...it has nothing to do with killing us or eating us. Obviously it's choosing the fish - not only is it choosing the fish, it's making a specific effort not to make a mistake of biting something it doesn't want to bite. Why would that benefit the shark? It doesn't. They don't go out looking for us. They don't even want to bite us when they have the opportunity to bite us. We don't need nets. (off camera) Yes! That was brilliant!
