It was bought by a Japanese businessman and father who promptly named it “Manami Star” after his eldest daughter - how adorable is that!?! Today's very special #WednesdayGemsday is a long one, and brought to you by #gay #engagement #love in the form of my and Kyle's #engagementrings as worn since my #proposal to him last Saturday. The rings' interior are #titanium - the low density, high strength #metal and #chemical #element - and the exterior are made of #Gibeon #Meteorite which originally fell to #Earth in #prehistoric #Namibia on the #African continent. Samples were sent to #London in 1836 by an #English captain, and they were confirmed as #extraterrestrial and named after the nearest town, Gibeon. All meteorites that fell during this event are known as such and composed of #iron #nickel #alloy with significant amounts of #cobalt and #phosphorous - which all form in a #crystallized pattern! The #preciousstone in Kyle's ring is #emerald (which will receive another post on her own) and my ring is #BlueDiamond - an impurity-colored #diamond - among the #hardest and most #lustrous stones on earth. The diamond industry has a very sordid history that reeks of the ills of capitalism, though cruelty-free options have thankfully become more accessible. #DeBeers Consolidated Mines company established the first large-scale diamond mines in #SouthAfrica and through aggressive ad campaigns in the 1930s, made diamond engagement rings a coveted status symbol and key element of the betrothal process in developed nations. I'm glad to see that My Millennial Trash Generation™ is largely killing this industry, and I'm seeing much more creative and colorful engagement and #wedding rings, or even traditional looking ones purchased through smaller companies and businesses, such as #JewelryByFordos in #Budapest #Hungary - Bence Fordos was instrumental in crafting these beautiful rings and getting them to me SO FAST for the party, and always responded quickly with great customer service. I highly recommend his company! In the show #StevenUniverse Blue Diamond is one of the #Homeworld rulers and members of the great #DiamondAuthority . Labradorite is not exactly one of the best known gemstones, but boy will it be one gem you will never forget once you have experienced the captivating, mystical charm of this ethereal stone. Labradorite can display an iridescent optical effect (or schiller) known as labradorescence. While labradorite is commonly found in grey-blue tones, this particular stone has really captured the autumnal colours within it, which I particularly love. Rarer varieties of Labradorite include Golden Labradorite, a transparent gold or champagne-color, and Spectrolite, an intense variety displaying the entire color spectrum, discovered in Finland in the 1940s, but now known to be found in other locations too. HEYO WASSUP, it's #WednesdayGemsday and today we are led to safety by the one and only - two and only? - #Rutile ! She, or they, rather, are a #Homeworld #Gem we meet in the episode #OffColors in #StevenUniverse . She and the other misfit gems have lived in hiding for eons, as gems who are somehow "wrong" are deemed without purpose, and therefore shattered. Rutile came out with a split gem, meaning they split at the waist with two upper bodies. They only survived because the other Rutiles were afraid of them and ran away. In the real world, rutile is a mineral primarily composed of titanium dioxide, #chemical formula TiO2. Twinning is actually quite common with rutile in reality, with entire clumps of prismatic crystals shooting off of each other. Frequently, rutile is found inside other minerals and crystals. For example, if you see a clear, hard stone with several little needles of another kind of rock inside in different directions, that would be a #rutilated #quartz - though rutile can be found in several colors inside many minerals. That's much cheaper to buy than pure, I TELL YA WHAT. That optical phenomenon is known as #asterism and gems containing it are known as #star #gems - perfect for the show! Some of the practical applications of rutile are fascinating! Its uncanny ability to absorb UV rays make it an ingredient in many sunscreens. Finely powdered rutile has a brilliant white pigment and is thus used in papers, paints, plastics, and foods. It's also used in ceramic pigment, and as a #welding electrode covering. Block the entrance! It's #WednesdayGemsday !!! Is that a Grandma Caterpillar behind you?! No! Well, yes! It's #Fluorite - the six mystery gem #fusion from the episode #OffColors from #StevenUniverse - the world's best cartoon. We don't know the #gems that make up Fluorite just yet, but there is much fan speculation that she at least contains a #pearl and possibly three Era One #peridot gems. We shall see for sure, I hope! Until then, she will continue to be the mother hen to the Off Colors in hiding on #Homeworld - including our dear Lars. In our day and age, fluorite is a multicolored #preciousstone and the #mineral form of calcium chloride, CaF2. It's a fairly brittle stone with a hardness of only 4 on the #Mohs Scale. It has industrial uses as a flux in smelting and in the production of certain glasses and enamels. And some Fluorite is even used in the glass of microscopes due to its low dispersion of light! #grandma #caterpillar #crystal
