What’s this year’s fit for trick or treating, Mother?

This is the first year the kids didn't do a group costume. We came close with Scooby Doo, but then my son decided he wanted to be Bill Cypher and Mr. MB got excited- they built that costume from the ground up and it does look really good. I'll try and get a picture of it that I can share with you all- I think you'll like it.

Little MB is Wednesday Addams, which is difficult for her because shes "a smiley girl" and Wednesday doesn't smile. She's been practicing her frowny face.

And my oldest is going as a zombie bride- we made fake blood last night and were splattering it all over her dress, it looks pretty good.

I am at work today dressed as Yzma, ready to hand out candy and I have to say the hat she wears is not comfortable at all.

Hey! Welcome to my first ever blog post.

I thought it would only be fitting to start with my latest project, Murder By Symbols, and the inspiration behind Detective Colton Baker. A real-life detective. Detective Dan Barber of the Stoughton Police Department.

I previously published two post-apocalyptic thrillers. Both are part of my Drew Murphy series. They’d been in my head for years and I finally wrote and published them. But my true love is murder mystery thrillers. Some of my favorite authors are Dan Brown, Lee Child, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child and Michael Connelly. Now, I wanted to write what I loved to read, and I thought I had a killer story on my hands, literally.

I was researching Stoughton, Massachusetts, the town in which I live, when I came across Dr. Benjamin Church. Doing a deep dive into this founding father, I discovered some crazy things. I don’t want to spoil the book, so I’ll stop there. I will say one last thing, though: cryptic cypher.

So, back to how I met Detective Barber.

My daughter Victoria played soccer on Sundays back in 2021. Her coach, Charlie Gillis, was a dispatcher for the Town of Stoughton. I discussed the book idea I had with him and he suggested I speak with a detective down at the station. He mentioned Detective Barber by name. Of course, we were on the soccer field and I didn’t write it down.

The following day I drove to the station. I asked to speak with a detective regarding a book I was working on. The front desk dispatcher said a detective wasn’t available at the moment. They asked me to leave my name and number, which I did.

I thought for sure that would be the end of it and my info would wind up in the trash. Boy, was I wrong! Later that evening, while at my daughter’s gymnastics class, my phone rang. I answered it. The voice on the other end of the line was strong and confident. He introduced himself as Detective Barber.

We spoke for a few minutes, and I explained the idea I had for my next project. He said he was interested and would love to assist in any way he could. I’d never met or spoken with an actual detective before, and I wasn’t sure what to call him. “Do I call you, Detective?” I asked. He chuckled and told me to call him Dan.

We set up a meeting for two days later, Wednesday May 19, 2021. I know the date, because Dan allowed me to record our first interview, along with every interview after. We met that evening at the station in the Media Relations room. Covid was winding down, so we still had to wear masks.

We sat down and he answered all of my questions. He explained the difference between patrol officers and detectives. He described in-depth what a detective does.

In another meeting, I told him about the different locations around town where the bodies would be discovered in the book. He even accompanied me around town to all the different locations and described in detail how he would process each crime scene. Dan is a walking wealth of information.

Dan provided me with his personal phone number. He said to text or call at any time. Not knowing his schedule, I always opted to text him. When I was working on a chapter or particular part of the book, and if I was unsure about something or had a question about how he’d handle a situation, I’d text him. I’d text him at all hours of the day and night. He’d always responded and answered with in-depth detail. Obviously, he did this when he was available. He truly was a valuable asset to the writing process.

Shortly after meeting Dan, I found out about a twelve-week Interactive Citizens Academy course the Stoughton Police Department was about to put on. I spoke with Dan, who made it possible for me to attend. It was awesome! I’ll go into more detail about the class in another blog post. Stay tuned!

During these classes, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dan’s fellow officers and a common theme emerged. He was smart, professional, and dedicated to the job. That definitely shined through when speaking with Dan.

To top things off, I was able to do a ride-a-long with Dan which was an incredible experience.

Over the years, I’ve gotten to know Dan, not only as a detective, but as a friend. He shares pictures and stories of his family with me. We’ve even gone out to dinner with our wives.

Murder By Symbols would not be possible without Detective Dan Barber.

I hope Dan knows how much respect I have for him. I am both privileged and honored to call him a friend!

Being a police officer isn’t an easy job. Knowing this, I usually end my texts to Dan with four words.

Don't ask why I wrote this (thoughts on the latest Ear biscuit)

It's been a good while since I've written down my thoughts on an Ear biscuit episode. I can tell you, there are probably dozens of unfinished drafts saved on my tumblr. I'm determined to post this one - if that doesn't happen, hi, me, from the future, trying to cypher why this text never got posted.

This was the rpisode after Good Mythical Evening, and, as we learn from Link, Rhett is still sick, but I think it's safe to say he's not premused quite as dead as he was during the Streamys anymore. Because of all of my neuroses, I've been genuinely worried for a few days, but I guess it's okay to breathe again.

So, Link was doing the podcast with Jenna, and I have to say, this was an excellent episode. The past few times when Jenna had been on the podcast with both Rhett and Link, the dynamic has been a little off, more confrontational with Rhett and Jenna teaming up "against" Link (which of course is not really the case, but because I tend to see things more like Link than Rhett, I'm often rooting for him). This episode, Link and Jenna have a great discussion as complete equals, and it is really enjoyable.

First, Link and Jenna go through GME and the Streamys, and sounds like they are both proud of Link's performances on both occations. It seems Rhett was pretty sick on the night of GME already. I hope GME 4 happens next year, not just because I've loved every show thus far, but so they get a chance to do one with both guys not sick, and with the technical stuff going as planned.

My heart kinda melted, when Link said he was missing "his dude" at the Streamys, and turns out he had talked about what to say on stage with Rhett. The way he presented Mr Beast's award was epic, but apparently, had they won Show of the Year, something even better would have happened. Next year, maybe.

So, the majority of this episode is dedicated to a solo camping trip Link made (with Jasper) during their summer break. He compares notes with Jenna on why they both enjoy solo travels, and talk about things you gotta do to stay safe while staying in the wilderness alone.

The reason I ended up writing my thoughts about this episode, in particular, is that listening to Link and Jenna talk about how freeing solitude is. I got envious.

The reason I've been so absent from Tumblr and everything else is that with my parents getting older, a lot of my time these days involves me doing things for them. My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last year, and he no longer has his driver's licence. My mom has had some pretty major health scares in the past year, and it's near a miracle she is currently alive and actually physically functional. As if these things weren't enough, my sister was diagnosed with cancer, went through surgery, chemo and radiation therapy in the past year, too. She is doing better, now, but with my parents and my sister all struggling, I've suddenly ended up being very necessary. And that means, the most time I've had for myself in the past few months has been two days at most, but usually, not a day goes by without someone needing my help. And, I could really use a solo trip right about now.

Link talked about how being alone gave him a sense of being fully in control, and that made him happy. And for Jenna, solitude meant freedom. I can relate to both of these feelings. I've never really been able to be truly myself when other people are around, and it can be really suffocating. For me, it took a world wide pandemic to figure out that I actually like being me, but the problems, the anxiety and stress, emerge when I'm expected to interact with other people. As much control as I have over my own existence, I can't control other people. I've tried, doesn't work.

I csn't wait to see the video version of this episode on Wednesday. Link showed Jrnna a video he had made while watching the sunset with Jasper. I'm not religious, nor particularly spiritual, but if I ever feel connrcted with the universe, it's when I'm in the wild, surrounded by the beauty of nature. One August night this summer, I sat in the dark, staring at the sky, searching for shooting stars. I was alone at that time, apart from a million mosquitoes eating my ankles, and at the same time, I felt free, yet not lonely. And then I heard something crack in the dark, and, because I was in my garden, I calmly stood up and walked inside.

So, yeah, after sll of this nonsensical rambling, what did I actually want to say? Enjoy the little moments in life, alone or with someone you love. If you can, go on a solo trip - and if that is not an option, go outside, look at the stars and breathe. And even if this text probably isn't the best ad for this Ear biscuits episode, listen to it.

i know i’m not on here much anymore but i wanted to say i saw yoongi on wednesday night (first night of his tour hehe) and it was the best night of my life. hearing never mind, seesaw, his cypher and ddaeng verses, plus his solo work, was something i still don’t think i can put into words right now. i’m so grateful to him!!! the artist of my life!! my favorite person, my honey boy!!

So todays morning pages are weird because I have so much on my brain I need to release and my hand will get tired real quick. It’s clearly afternoon so as we can see I’m still sleeping in late. So much has happened over the course of the past couple weeks and there’s no one to blame but myself. Nothing is bad I just can’t put the outcomes on anyone other than the choices Ive been making lately, which aren’t terrible but aren’t always beneficial either. 

I’m just hella behind, my sleep schedule be a wreck and then it’s hard to get back on top of things. I’m glad I have today off because I’ve been able to catch up on a lot things including my week three of artist way so that I can finish week 4 this week as well. 

Sleeping with Rah was a big regret and I also saw Angel which didn’t feel close to how bad I wanted him this summer. Im just happy I can finally close that door. I’m gonna give celibacy another shot but i’m not gonna initially aim for the summer, I’m gonna give myself a smaller time frame. I’m also planning to start lifting weights again to change up my workout. I also plan on going to church in Chicago again so that I can get dressed up to serve God. I see the things I can implement in my life and I see how well it will serve me if I’m consistent in them. So this is just another week of getting back on the horse and learning from my mistakes. I actually feel like this week there is a good chance of me doing the things I say I’m gonna do. Today I get to catch up on morning pages and go for a run as well as a 30 min stretch. I also just booked studio time to go over the jlo dance from Friday night session with Niki and Tiffany. I’ve been wanting to record a class and retake that class on my own in a different setting. So I plan on doing this next Saturday with Traes Choreo as well. So tomorrow Niki is reteaching so I’ll have it perfected by the end of class today and hopefully the goal is let myself shine in class and finally get some content to share and let myself be great. This will be in prepration of the cypher sage is having at their release party where I absolutely have to join. I plan on taking Jason’s freestyle class tonight to cleanse my pallet when it comes to my own freestyle and choreography. Tomorrow of course, retaking Niki’s and Wednesday I’m gonna record Tre Daniel’s house session so I can practice that in the mornings before my workout. Thursday I work at the bar where I plan on being presenting myself as the most professional I’ve ever been. Friday trae is back teaching so I’ll be taking him again and re learning that Saturday morning. I’ll need to find time to do an artist date in between . Then of course do my laundry and reset Saturday as well. Hopefully I get work Sunday I plan on actually going to church and then dancing the rest of the evening. 

That’s a jam packed week and I’m already running behind now. I’m about to do my stretch as well as reset another 75 hard. There’s not much else to say but actually do. Reminder that I need to make time to get the gym membership.

Confession:  Paul did a WOD similar to this at MOMENTUM on 30A where he is a STAR.  He sends me fun WODs sometimes because he knows I need help.   I changed it a tad to make it work at LHCF.  Armando immediately cyphered it out mathematically and did the presentation for you.  It went pretty well.  Everybody cooperated, partnered up, and did it correctly.  I think.  Warren A/Old Joe The Bird Man didn’t move quickly enough and got stuck with a bike instead of a Rower.  Predictable.

Perhaps everything proceeded smoothly today because Robert was in Texas.  It certainly was quieter. 

Tuesday beer night started slowly, then gained momentum.  Many stayed late and everyone participated.  We have at least 6 different brews.  I thought the supply of Bud Platinum was exhausted, but someone dug a Purple bottle out of the copious Timmy Ice.  Nobody would drink it.

Wednesday at 0800 will be a great workout open to everyone.

Thursday at 4 PM we will enjoy a workout with wine and snacks to follow.

Cypher pt.3: Killer ~ BTS

My best friend was not feeling well at all so I invited him for lunch. We ate pizzas and he cried a bit on my shoulder and I tried my best to comfort him. He doesn’t confide in anyone but me and I am a bit scared that I am doing it wrong. It’s hard to find the right words, even when you have been in that mental headspace, all words sound wrong somehow. We then walked around a bit because I had nausea (anxiety hello).

I went to the cinema with one of my besties. We watched “My rendezvous with Leo” which was about an older woman paying for a man prostitute’s services for the first time after the death of her husband because she never tried anything in bed other than letting her husband do his thing and being left unsatisfied. Everything took place on the same hotel room and they met 4 times. The movie and dialogues were really well made it was a great film I liked it. A solid 17/20. I really recognized myself in her somehow despite how annoying she could be. She visited him with a list of things to do, that’s definitely me as a client as well lmao.

When I came back from the cinema, I changed at home and went straight to the gym with my roommate. I don’t like her gym as much as my bestie’s one but it’s okay to go there to run and row. We stayed till the closure at 11pm (yeah I really do sport for a living atm it’s terrible my body wasn’t ready)

I had a panic attack tonight and I had to go out at night for a short hour. I did not take my anxiety meds because I mistook the symptoms for potential stomach problems, as usual. Also I am trying to learn how to cope with my panic attacks without taking my meds. It’s not always easy but I am quite proud of the past few weeks during which I didn’t take them. I know that it’s okay if I need them to stabilize myself but I want to learn to manage my emotions and overwhelming anxiety on my own.

Also I got my Duolingo recap, I learned 890 words this year and I am hoping to reach the B1 level in Spanish at the end of 2023. Yes I am already setting goals.
