Wedding Videographer: 20 Questions to Ask Your Videographer
A wedding video is the best way to capture all of your special moments. These questions can help you find a professional videographer that is capable of delivering an exceptional video for your wedding day.
Booking your wedding videographer is a big step! Videography is an art form, and many couples don’t know much about the industry. Since some of the terms used in a wedding video package simply don’t translate into everyday conversation, you might not know how to compare different options. That’s why having a little guidance from your videographer can make all the difference!
You’ll want your wedding video to reflect your style as a couple. You also want to make sure that all of the intricate details you meticulously planned are captured. To do this, it’s important to find a wedding videographer who is not only great at what they do, but also easy to work with and meshes well with you and your partner’s personality – after all your wedding videographer will be beside you for much of your wedding day.
Booking your wedding videographer
Before hiring a videographer, ask these 20 expert-approved wedding videography questions so you can feel more comfortable with your wedding video experience.
1. Are you available on our wedding date?
Ask this question first. Before you launch into different questions and ask about their packages you will want to find out if you’re wedding videographer is even available on your wedding date. Many videographers are booked months, if not years, ahead, (especially the really good ones). So it’s a good idea to see if they are even free on your wedding day before you go too far into a conversation with them.
2. What is your style of videography?
If you’re speaking to a wedding videographer about your own wedding, ask them for a sample of their videos and see what style works for you and your wedding story. Otherwise, you may end up with something that doesn’t suit you or your special day at the end of all the excitement.
Perhaps you prefer a cinematic wedding video style. Or perhaps you’d rather have your wedding video be more traditional and laid-back. There are different styles of wedding videos and it’s important to choose one that best fits your vision — especially with so many options currently available.
If you haven’t yet, check out some of my wedding videos to get an idea of my video style, and see if it suits you. Keep in mind that every video I shoot is custom-tailored to you, and your love story so no video follows the same cookie-cutter template.
3. I am happy with your service, how much do you require to secure the date?
Pro tip: Different wedding videographers have different policies. Usually, you will pay from $500 to $1000 or 30 – 50% of the total amount.
Qualifying your wedding videographer candidates
4. What is your videography background?
If you’re planning on spending any of your hard-earned cash on a wedding videographer, it’s important to know what kind of education and experience they should have. Not only does the videographer need to have the know-how and skills to get the job done, but also a background in video editing and shooting.
A wedding video is an extremely important part of your day, so it’s smart to ask about your wedding videographer’s training background because their style can differ drastically. You’ll want to be educated about what they can do and what they can’t. It’s wise to explore their experience in detail.
Are they self taught or did they train professionally? Do you like their style? The choice of wedding photographer can seem overwhelming, but getting a recommendation from someone you trust or reading online reviews is the best option.
5. How many weddings have you filmed?
Your wedding videographer will probably go above and beyond to make sure your big day is captured perfectly on camera. That’s why it’s important for you to know how many weddings your wedding videographer has filmed before signing a contract.
When it comes to selecting a videographer, it’s important to consider the experience they’ve already gained in the past. In the big day of your wedding, it would be a waste of money and time to hire a videographer who hasn’t seen many wedding celebrations.
Your wedding is a unique and important event. Videographers need to ensure that the footage they capture is relevant and captures exactly how your day will be remembered by your family and friends. It is important to ensures your videographer has perfected his or her craft, even when you are not there for the big day. A professional who can read the mood and emotions of the day is invaluable. This only comes with experience, so you probably don’t want your wedding to be a videographer’s first job.
6. Is the videographer you’re meeting with the person who will be filming on your wedding day?
Ensuring that the videographer you hire will be the person filming on your wedding day is a big step in making sure you get the best footage possible. Not only will it be fun, but it will also ensure that you get the most out of your videographer. As a couple, you will spend most of your time with your videographer, so it’s important to get to know them and what they like to do.
Your wedding day is so important and should be nothing but fun-filled – and you don’t want anything or anyone to bring you down. That’s why it’s important to have a rapport with all your wedding suppliers, especially the ones who will be spending large chunks of your wedding day with you.
You don’t want to spend your day listening to someone you don’t get along with, so if the person you’re dealing with isn’t the person who will be shooting your wedding, ask if you can meet them beforehand.
7. How many camera people will be operating on the day?
Be sure to ask how many people will be shooting your wedding day – and how many cameras they will be operating. Of course, this will depend on the wedding videographer’s staff and equipment, but also on your own wedding budget.
Generally, the more people that can be added to production, the better the results. After all, if you’re paying for a single person with one camera, don’t expect shots of the bride walking down the aisle – and shots of the groom when he first sees her, or of your wedding speeches — and footage of the audience reactions.
8. What cameras and equipment do you use?
There are many different kinds of cameras and equipment. As much as it is important to have a great videographer, it is also important for them to have sufficient equipment to film the important moments of your wedding day.
One of the really important things you need to ask your wedding videographer is how many cameras do they use on the wedding day?
The correct answer is at least two. Your wedding filmmaker has to use two cameras during the ceremony and reception. You can’t just capture the whole thing in one shot with one camera. The first camera should be set up in the middle of the aisle to capture wide shots, while a second camera captures reactions from different angles.
A two-camera setup means your wedding videographer will have something to fall back on when one camera breaks down and becomes unusable. It’s very important for them to have a backup camera as they don’t need to worry about it malfunctioning.
When people ask me about the gear I use I can go on for hours about my preferences and videography equipment that I love! The bottom line is that there are some many different types of equipment but when it comes down to it you only need to make sure your wedding videographer has enough equipment to capture all parts of your day.
The most important piece of information you should try and figure out from your wedding videographer is how many cameras do they use?
Common wedding video ceremony setup:
The wedding videographer will have two cameras on tripods, taking video of the bride and groom from different angles (either side of the aisle). The videographer will then look after one camera and capture reaction shots of the crowd, or other establishing shots.
A two-camera setup also means your videographer has a fall-back if something goes wrong with one of their cameras and becomes unusable. This is why wedding videography can be quite difficult – your videographer only has one shot at getting it right.
Researching wedding video packages and prices
If you’re planning on getting married, you know that wedding video packages are a popular way to capture memories of the day. Yet, so many couples are unsure of what to expect as far as prices, package length, and what degree of service they might receive. In this section, I’ll share the basics about researching wedding video packages and prices, so you can feel confident that you’ll be spending your money wisely.
With over 100 wedding videographers in Brisbane – it’s hard to figure out which videographer is perfect for you. Often the biggest concern for couples booking videographers is price. How much does a wedding videographer cost?
In this next section I’ll break down some questions you can ask your videographer to help understand the different aspects of the wedding video service so you’ll feel confident that you are making the most of the money you are spending.
9. What items are included in your wedding videography package?
Every wedding videographer provides different wedding video products.
Every wedding videographer has different inclusions in their wedding packages – so it’s worth asking what is included. For example in my Nothing Missed packages I have the following inclusions:
All Day Filming with our Nothing Missed Guarantee
Cinematic Wedding Highlights (5-10 Minutes)
Comprehensive Audio Coverage
Final Video Delivery Within 6 Weeks
1 Videographer
Cinematic Drone Footage (location specific)
10. Are there any additional costs we may encounter?
Get a very clear picture from your wedding videographer about your final cost as well as what things will cost extra – before you sign the contract.
It’s important to check with your wedding videographer if there will be any additional costs – before you sign the contract.
The easiest way to figure this out is to ask what your wedding videographers final cost will be, and then finding out whether they are going to charge you for any potential extra cost such as trave expenses, additional edits or coverage.
90% of the time you will know exactly what you are paying up front and there won’t be any surprises or additional costs as the cost of any extra’s are usually priced in a transparent way. It’s also worth noting that videographers will usually expect payment to be completed 30 days prior to your wedding.
11. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?
Nobody likes to think about having to cancel a service, but it’s smart to be prepared for all possible scenarios. The fact is, things can go wrong and they do, so ask what will happen if you have to cancel your contract; what the cancellation policy is, and if you’ll get a refund.
Nobody wants to cancel their wedding but with COVID (at the time of writing) and all sorts of chaotic events that can occur… it’s smart to be prepared for all possible scenarios when wedding planning. Unfortunately, things can go wrong, so make sure to ask what will happen if you have to cancel your contract. Ask what the cancellation policy is and if you can get a refund.
12. Do I lose my deposit if I have to change my wedding day?
Most wedding videographers have different policies when it comes to deposits or retainers when booking their services – make sure to double check with your videographer before signing up
Pro tips: According to Australia commercial law, a deposit is nonrefundable. It is quite hard to get a refund without a good reason. But if you change the wedding day, ask the wedding videographer whether they can assist to change the day without extra charge.
What if I have to cancel my wedding?
Nobody wants to cancel their wedding. But if you have no choice and you don’t want to lose your deposit their are couple of options. While most wedding videographers won’t refund your deposit many are willing for you to use your deposit as a credit to transfer your wedding booking to a different date.
Everything you need to ask about how your wedding film will be produced
13. How long will it take you to edit our video?
One of the most common misconceptions is how long it takes to edit a wedding video.
Many couples assume that their wedding video can be completed a couple of weeks after their wedding.
Unfortunately this is not the case – the average turn around time for a wedding video in Australia is 8 – 12 weeks. Here at Flare Films I try and turn around my wedding videos with 6 weeks, but it can be longer during busy times of the year. Of course, I also offer a ‘social trailer’ where you can get the highlights of your wedding day 48 hours after I shoot your wedding!
Generally this isn’t a big concern – experienced videographers know that you want your wedding video ASAP, but they also understand the importance of going through every single clip and editing them together to make the best possible wedding video that reflects your attributes as a couple.
Most videographers will give you clear time frames and set your expectations straight and are usually spot on with the time frames they give you.
14. What exactly will you film on the day?
It’s important to understand what events your wedding videographer will be able to capture – most wedding videographers only offer a certain number of hours that they cover your wedding so you will need to make sure that all your important events fit within this time. For example, a common package will have 6 hours of coverage. This will mean that you will have to choose between having wedding prep covered or your speeches. It will be up to you to figure out which one is best!
I offer all-day wedding video coverage with all of my packages so you will never miss a moment, and you don’t have to stress about choosing the right amount of coverage.
It’s worth asking whether the footage will be of the entire ceremony or just snippets of the ‘best moments’.
What about the first dance and big exit?
What exactly will be delivered and by when?
Will you receive just one single long-edit video? How long will it be? Will you receive a shorter highlights video?
Many wedding videographers (myself included) deliver a short social ‘trailer’ so you can share a snippet of your wedding to your family and friends on social media. Some videographers don’t offer this so make sure to triple check the inclusions in your packages
Lastly, it’s worth asking how the final product will be delivered. In this modern age, most wedding videographers will send you a link to watch your wedding video – but quite often they will also deliver a USB containing the high definition video as well.
15. What about the audio?
One of the coolest things about modern wedding videography is the inclusion of audio. I capture audio of the speeches, the ceremony, and all of the other wonderful candid moments that occur throughout the day.
For that reason – it’s worth asking the wedding videographer if they capture audio.
The easiest way to check (without even asking) is to watch their videos. If their films mostly contain music with minimal audio snippets. It’s likely that the don’t have the necessary equipment to be able to capture audio on your wedding day.
Wedding videographers will typically use ‘lapel mics’ for the clearest possible audio. These are the little mics that are attached to the grooms lapel. It is also common for a videographer to plug directly into the celebrants PA system and record audio from there.
Warning: If you are planning a church wedding – some churches may not allow the use of microphones so its worth double checking this when you book your venue.
If you plan on capturing speeches you should definately make sure your videographer can capture audio otherwise there is very little point in having your wedding videographer there.
16. How do you back-up your footage?
If you are worried about losing your precious wedding day film – its worth double checking whether your wedding videographer backs up their footage. There is only one opportunity to film your wedding!
Your wedding videographer is probably well aware of this and backs up your wedding footage as soon as they get back to their computer.
We make sure to back up your footage on-site (on our computer) and in the cloud.
17. For how long do you keep the footage?
If you are interested in getting your wedding videographers raw footage it’s worth asking how long they keep the raw footage.
A typical wedding day (depending on the camera) can takes up between 70Gb and 200Gb of storage space – which is alot, and is not something a business can keep forever, especially if your wedding videographer films dozens if not hundreds of weddings per year.
Most will keep the original footage for between two months and a year after your video is delivered, but after that period, your footage will, most likely, be deleted forever.
18. Have you worked with <insert the name of your wedding photographer> before?
Your wedding photographer and wedding videographers may be from different companies, but they’ll need to work very closely as they’re both trying to capture the same key moments – without getting in each other’s way.
Your wedding videographer and photographer will work closely together when they are capturing your day – and its important they get along so they can capture the best moments, without getting in each other’s way.
While most professionals work with oter wedding vendors exceptionally well, it’s nice to know if a wedding videographer has worked with your photographer before as they will likely know each others style and they way they work. This will result in a better final result for both of them and most importantly – you!
It’s not a big deal if your wedding photographer and videographer haven’t worked together – but its nice to check for some piece of mind.
19. Are changes available once we see the first edit?
Editing a wedding video takes ALOT of work! As a general rule, for every 1 hour filming I can spend up to 3-4 hours editing. Plently of love, art, sweat and tears go into making your wedding video so the last thing your wedding videographer wants is to present you with something you don’t like – or requires heavy re-editing.
Its important to stress what you want included in your wedding video upfront, if you are after something specific. Its important to also watch as many wedding videos from the wedding videographer you hire as possible – that way you will 100% understand there wedding video style. The wedding video you get will be quite similar to the wedding videos they have previously produced (most likely), so make sure you absolutely LOVE the wedding videos of the videographer you’re thinking of hiring – before you book them.
It’s very rare for a major re-edit of a wedding video, but you’ll usually have a 30-day period for you to suggest minor re-edits without a further cost.
20. What music will you be using in my wedding video?
The music used in your wedding video will make a dramatic difference in the feel of your film. Make sure to clarify the sort of music you are after before your wedding videographer starts editing your video – do you want something soft and romantic or fast-paced and edgy?
My advice is to leave the music choice up to your wedding videographer. An experienced videographer will find the perfect track that matches the vibe of a particular scene of your wedding. Quite often wedding videographers will mix and match different tracks to fit different events during your wedding day.
One thing to keep in mind is that a videographer won’t be able to edit your music to ‘pop songs’ you won’t be able to use your favourite artist as a backing track for your wedding video. Or at least the public wedding highlight video.
If your videographer has the appropriate APRA licence (which allows them to use pretty much any song you can think of) they will be able to use your chosen song in the longer video edit they send to you for your private use.
If you’re desperate to have a famous song in your wedding video you will need to seek permission from the actual rights holder for each piece of music directly – this will be time consuming AND expensive and I highly recommend you avoid this if possible.
Most wedding videographers use ‘royalty free’ music sites which don’t charge extreme amounts of money to license music.
Here is the website we use for music:
Wedding Planning is a long journey!
Organizing a wedding is a long journey. Don’t rush to make decisions and make sure there isn’t any landmines or hidden cost in your wedding videography package. Do ask everything you’re unsure of and make sure to understand everything clearly.
If you have any other specific questions feel free to contact me – and I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have!

How to Select a Melbourne Muslim Wedding Photographer?
In everyone's life, weddings are a momentous event full of love, happiness, and the promise of a future shared. For Muslim couples, a wedding is not just their joining of two people but also the start of a new chapter anchored in faith, family, and culture. Recording these events is vital, and a qualified Muslim wedding photographer Melbourne can make sure the beauty and importance of the ceremony live for next generations. Retaining these memories in a way that captures the core of the event depends on selecting the correct photographer.
We will walk you through the process of choosing a wedding photographer that respects and knows your cultural traditions in this post, therefore producing breathtaking images that highlight the beauty, spirituality, and excitement of your unique day.
Appreciating the Special Features of a Muslim Wedding
Muslim weddings abound in customs that differ somewhat based on the ethnic background of the couple. Nonetheless, they all follow similar religious customs and ideals, hence while choosing a photographer, one should give these great thought. Usually featuring religious procedures including the Nikah (marriage contract) and many cultural rites involving family meetings, prayers, and profoundly spiritual festivities, Muslim weddings are distinguished.
Since these customs are important, the photographer must be aware of the subtleties of the ceremony, the value of particular events, and the need of capturing them with respect. A photographer knowledgeable with Muslim weddings will be more suited to record the holy rites as well as the lighthearted events without losing a beat.
Look for what in a Muslim wedding photographer in Melbourne?
Selecting the appropriate photographer calls for great thought since it is about presenting a story rather than only capturing images. These important factors should help you decide on a wedding photographer for your Muslim marriage in Melbourne:
1. Experience Muslim Weddings
Experience is really important while selecting a photographer. Not all photographers are aware of the special dynamics of a Muslim wedding; however, knowing the rituals is essential to seize the appropriate moments. Experience with Muslim weddings will enable a photographer to identify the most crucial aspects to capture, including the Nikah ceremony, the vow-exchanging family relations, and the celebration events following.
A photographer who has photographed several Muslim weddings in Melbourne will also be familiar with the venues where these events are typically held, which would assist in arranging and guaranteeing best lighting and angles. Request to view their portfolio especially targeted on Muslim weddings to be sure their style fits your vision for your big day.
2. Acknowledging Cultural Sensitivity    Â
Strict cultural and religious rules that photographers have to follow abound at Muslim marriages. For instance, the photographer should respect the space and customs throughout the wedding ceremony. Many times, men and women may be split off for portions of the ceremony; the photographer must be aware of this divide to prevent any embarrassing circumstances.
Furthermore important at a Muslim wedding is modesty, thus the photographer should honor this by avoiding too revealing or intimate poses. A competent photographer will be able to preserve attention to cultural and religious standards while nevertheless catching the beauty of the day.
3. Photographic Style
Different photographers have different approaches; the correct one for you will rely on the tone and environment you like to portray in your wedding pictures. While some photographers may provide a more planned, conventional approach with set photos, others may specialize in documentary-style photography, which catches honest events as they organically develop.
Think about the mood you wish to portray in your wedding pictures. Would you like a more natural, laid-back look that accentuates the day's authenticity and feeling? Alternatively would you like a collection of tasteful, poised images emphasizing the formal and ceremonial sides of the wedding? You can even wish for a combination of both—posed images for official family photos and documentary views that chronicle your day.
Ask to see whole wedding albums from past Muslim marriage events while meeting possible photographers. This will help you to better understand their capacity to manage several facets of the wedding day, from the spiritual to the festive.
4. Courtesy and Communication
Professionalism and open communication are especially vital as your wedding photographer will be among the most important persons catching the most significant events of your life. The photographer must know your vision and be at ease conveying any particular needs you might have. An professional photographer will spend some time talking about your expectations, daily agenda, and any significant events or things you should not overlook.
Additionally making sure they have a backup in case of technical problems is a professional photographer's responsibility. The days of a wedding might be erratic, so you want a photographer who can adjust to any unanticipated event that develops and who is calm under pressure.
5. Technical skills and tools
The equipment the photographer uses and their technical ability will mostly determine the quality of your wedding pictures. Excellent cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and backup gear are traits of a successful photographer. From inside ceremonies to outdoor festivities, they should also be skilled in using these instruments to get the greatest photographs under different lighting circumstances.
Should your wedding take place in a setting with difficult lighting, such a darkly lit mosque or a brilliantly illuminated outdoor location, it is crucial to make sure the photographer is qualified to work with the surroundings. Talking about their method of lighting, composition, and camera angles will help you to understand their technical proficiency.
6. Testimonials and Reviews
Reviews and client comments from past projects are among the most consistent means of evaluating a photographer's skills. To find out what other couples have to say about their experience with the photographer, ask for references or review internet sites. Pay close attention to remarks about the photographer's professionalism, critical moment capture, and comfort of the couple and guests.
Although internet evaluations are useful, personal recommendations from friends or relatives who have had good experiences with a Muslim wedding photographer in Melbourne can offer quite insightful information.
7. Custom Packs and Flexibility
Every wedding is different, as are the requirements of every couple. Good wedding photographers should provide flexibility in their packages so you may select services that fit your particular needs. Whether your needs call for extra photos and albums, a second photographer to record more viewpoints, or more hours of coverage, a photographer who is ready to customize their offerings will help to meet your expectations.
Make sure everything you want is included and go over package alternatives in great depth. Discovering last-minute fees for services you thought were covered by the original agreement is the last thing you want.
Why should one hire a professional Muslim wedding photographer?
Your wedding day is once-in-a-lifetime, hence the memories made on this day should be professionally recorded. Every time you check over your pictures, a well-made wedding album lets you revisit those priceless events. A competent photographer can capture all the unique events in a way that honors your cultural customs and personal style, whether your event is small-scale intimate or large-scale celebration.
Hiring a professional wedding photographer guarantees that every element—from the bride's outfit to the groom's vows—is expertly photographed. Apart from producing excellent pictures, a competent photographer will create a narrative using their work, therefore producing a wedding album that chronicles your day.
One of the most crucial decisions you will make in wedding planning is selecting the appropriate Muslim wedding photographer Melbourne.
